A Shire of Roebourne survey on the use of trail and quad bikes has revealed both riders and the broader community agree more designated riding areas are needed. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said the survey of both riders and non-riders was completed as part of the Shire’s Off-road Vehicles Project. “The survey has confirmed the problems of illegal riding on roads and drainage reserves are widespread and cover the majority of Karratha from Baynton West through to Maitland Road in Bulgarra,” Councillor White-Hartig said. “It has also identified more than 70 riding ‘hot spots’ and that non-riders are primarily concerned about trail and quad bikes being ridden on roads, footpaths and reserves. “These same non-riders are also concerned about speeding, dangerous riding and noise.” Underage and unlicensed riders were the main problem group identified by nonriders with lack of rider courtesy and lack of parental supervision seen as the main causes for concern. Cr White-Hartig said riders identified discourteous fellow riders and a lack of sanctioned areas to ride as their primary concerns. “Both riders and non-riders agreed that more sanctioned riding areas were needed to address a number of other concerns raised in the survey,” she said. “Not surprisingly, non-riders also suggested more enforcement and even bike confiscation as potentially effective solutions to the concerns they raised.” The next stage of the project will be a Community/Rider Workshop, to be held at the newly opened Frank Butler Community Centre on Hunt Way in Bulgarra on Monday, July 30, starting at 6pm. Everyone with an interest in this issue is invited to participate in the workshop, which will be focused on aligning the interests of riders and non-riders and exploring potential solutions.

Bright, sparkly colours are what Caroline from Pilbara Made Parties loves the most about her work. Caroline loves to paint faces, especially children’s faces, whether at parties or events. When the party has a theme, Caroline can paint the guests faces to match; such as sparkles, pirates and even Willy Wonka. Whatever the theme, Caroline will be there to colour your party faces in bright, fluoro and sparkly face paint. Requests can be met at birthdays or events and Caroline will have
her paints with her when she is painting faces at FeNaCl this year. She will be the only face painter there so look out for her, but you might have to be early if you want to get your child’s face painted. Nothing is too much trouble for Caroline because she loves to be creative, so make sure you come up with some clever ideas before you see her. Otherwise you can just wait and see what she comes up with for you. She will travel for special events and occasions and doesn’t need much space in which to work.
Caroline said, “I love it, I love being with the kids. “I love how much joy it puts into their faces. Caroline loves the arty side of her business. “I prefer to be creative and I love the arty side of the face painting, the artistic side.” Caroline will be going to Perth for more training and has been asked to be the Pilbara trainer. Crashes, dingoes and tears By Courtney Bertling Locals, Dave Peck and Mick Tuthill have recently returned from a three-week ride through the remote outback of Australia, rediscovering the beauty of this country and filming their trip along the way. The trip which began on July 10 and finished on July 30, was to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The guys set out on the road to make a film and bring people back to basics, learning about historic landmarks, the interaction between the guys and the Aboriginal communities and seeing how beautiful Australia can be. “Our aim was to target some of remote areas in central Australia, so we did the Gunbarrel Highway, then we went through a lot of Aboriginal communities in South Australia, including the Pintinjarra lands,” Dave said. “One of the communities
we visited, I grew up in 26 years ago, so we were accepted back into the community, not just as a visitor, but as someone who was welcomed in.” Before the trip, both Dave and Mick expected the trip to be easy, smooth sailing and with no muck-ups. “You look at these maps and it looks easy but when we got out there we realized our bikes needed hours of maintenance a day just to make them rideable, then try to capture everything on film was extremely difficult,” Dave said. “I can’t believe that the bikes made it after multiple crashes.” Mick described Dave’s major crash as terrible and that he was lucky to be alive. “I just got flung off at high-speed, in the middle of nowhere, where you wouldn’t see a car and Michael had to strap me up together again and I just sat in shock for sometime,” Dave
recalled. “It was a really bad impact, I had the camera gear in my back pack, did 10 roll overs and walk away from it with no scratches.” “That changed the trip, instead of having a boys trip, it was about getting home safe to your family,” Mike said. “Accidents like that really put life into perspective for you.” Now that the trip is over, the guys will spend until December editing what they captured into a DVD, which will then be sold and profits going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. “We need to distance ourselves from the footage for a couple of months because there is so much footage there,” Dave said. “It is important not to get attached to it. “We want to produce a 45-minute DVD that is TV quality, certainly something that we would like to screen
in early December.” What people can expect from the film is to be reconnected to Australia, the land and the wildlife. A few other things to look out for will be when Mick leaves leftover food around Dave’s swag, which attracts the dingoes, when the support car and crew goes missing in the bush, only to be found in Newman drinking and maybe even a few tears. “It was very emotional, especially when we left the communities, like the connection to the family that we had left, there was days where we would look at each other and know that we were going through a bit of a moment,” Mick said. “We would like to thank everyone involved, from the sponsors to the community,” Dave said. “There’s a long list and everyone helped us a lot, and that support was thought of during the trip.”

Have your say on industrial land development in Onslow.
The Ashburton North Strategic Industrial Area (ANSIA) is being master planned to accommodate a hydrocarbon processing and associated industries precinct. The ANSIA, located 12km south west of Onslow, comprises approximately 8,000ha and will include a State Port, Common-User Coastal Area, Multi-User Infrastructure Corridors and Heavy Industrial Area for LNG and Hydrocarbon processing. We are proposing to initially develop a 100ha Support/General Industrial Area to accommodate supporting services for the Ashburton North proponents during the construction and operation of the Strategic Industrial Area. To help us cater to the demand for industrial land in Ashburton North, and ensure the optimum planning of the estate, we are inviting interested parties to complete our online survey. We have engaged a sales agent to contact businesses that complete our online survey to discuss their specific needs, provided that permission to contact is given. The results of the survey will help determine the size and layout of the first stage of the General Industrial Area and ensure the estate is planned in a way that meets the requirements of all potential users. The survey closes midday (WST) Wednesday 8 August. For more information visit landcorp.com.au/ashburtonnorthindustrial

The Pilbara Poet
by Elise Batchelor
Have you ever denied your child a pet? Beware, the perils of doing so may be greater than you’d ever imagined. Keep this poem away from the kids. It’s holidays - they might get ideas.
The pet
She tucked it in to bed that night. She’d given it a bath. She’d giggled with her lovely pet (made sure it didn’t laugh). She’d tended to its eyebrows, made sure its nose was there. She’d promised all her love and time and polished it with care. She switched the light off finally and tiptoed to her bed. Her pet, thank goodness, good to see, had stories to it read. A fairytale, a little book, a made up story too, a lullaby (not Humpty Dumpty – that would never do).
She dragged me to her bedroom, a site of sludge and breakage, her little pet named “Eggie” all smashed in shell glug wreckage.
“My darling girl, do not be sad, The night was long, the pair slept deep amidst this slop and crunch. within the cosy gloom. We’ll get another fresh pet egg.” But hark! At 6am, great screams (Egg one turned scrambled lunch). and sobs ran to my room. “It’s ok now, I’m done with eggs.” “My pet! My pet!” so heartbroken, No more that golden flood. the little girl told all, “I’ve got a new friend now,” she how that her pet she’d stood on it. beamed So, tragically, no more. and held up her pet mud.

Conquering the Kokoda Track By Courtney Bertling
• Robyn and Daniel Head
Not many people can say that they have conquered the Kokoda Track, but two locals, Robyn and Daniel Head now can. Robyn said both her and her son decided to tackle the 10-day trek out of respect to the soldiers that died on the track. “The Kokoda Track is a really important campaign for Australia and I don’t think it seems to be recognised enough,” she said. “If it wasn’t for those ‘ragged, bloody heroes’ that held the hill, the Japanese would have taken over Darwin and the rest of Australia.” Robyn and Daniel trained for six months before heading over. And although training five-six hours a day, trekking all over the Pilbara, nothing could prepare them for what was in store. “The terrain was harder than expected,” Robyn said. “It was hard for us, but imagine the soldiers, that would have been horrific.
• Conquering the Kokoda Track takes endurance
“They had to deal with sickness, mud, rain, carry supplies, stay focused and fight at the same time. “It was both physically and mentally exhausting, although it was more mentally demanding.” With little supplies, Robyn said it was different setting up camp and they had to sleep on a thin mattress. “Towards the end, a couple of people started getting sick but we had to keep on going,” she said. “The people that helped us along the trek, the ones who do it all the time, they work really hard and are amazing. “Without them it would have been very difficult, I actually had one guy who had to pull me up as I was at the brink of tears.” The highlight of the trek for Robyn was acknowledging the history. “We would stop at different points along the way and when we stopped at the Isurava Memorial, where there was a seven day battle, I ended up in tears,” she said.
“I am speechless, it was both amazing and sad to be able to stand where people had fought for our country. “The sacrifice the soldiers went through, they were sent in undertrained and their supplies didn’t turn up on time. “I am proud to say that I am an Aussie.” Completing the Kokoda Track is something that Robyn had always wanted to do, but never thought would happen. “It is a big achievement, but next I think I will go on a nice relaxing holiday,” she laughed. “I believe we should all take a minute to recognise the soldiers who fought at the Kokoda Track. “They are not recognised enough,
especially when you think of everything that they went through.
“Going on the trek, I learnt a lot more, especially first-hand experience.”

Speed and you will get caught A Suspended driver was arrested in Roebourne on July 10, after being apprehended by Police. His licence has 20 separate court suspensions, including 10 lifetime suspensions. His car has been impounded for 28 days and he appeared at the Roebourne Magistrates Court on July 12. In other news, four Pilbara Traffic Officers from Karratha travelled to Marble Bar for the
weekend’s races. Pilbara Traffic OIC Sergeant Steve Scott said that the vast majority of people that attended this event were doing the right thing, unfortunately a number of drivers on the highways were not. Pilbara Traffic issued 28 infringements during their journey to and from the Cup. “It clearly shows many people are not driving within the posted speed limits on our
regional roads,” OIC Scott said. “Many drivers we stop offer the explanation that their cruise control was set at 120 when they know the speed zone is 110.
Expressions of Interest
“My message is quite simple, drive within the posted speed limits to avoid being issued an infringement.

Rubbish bags were handed out at the clean up to 143 volunteers supporting the event. This included 12 community groups participating in the ‘bags for bucks program’. Shire scene New artworks on display A new art exhibition is on display at Karratha Airport, which captures the rugged beauty of the Australian outback in oil and acrylic on canvas. Artist Betty Rupe has lived in the outback of Western Australia for most of her adult life, including time spent in Broome, Leonora, Port Hedland and Karratha.
20x20x20 exhibition
Betty started painting in 1990 in Leonora and continues to be driven by the amazing colours, landscape, people and history of the northern reaches of Western Australia. “My paintings are about feeling and I strive to make the viewer experience the exhilaration, connection and harmony I feel through the image that I am portraying,” she said. “I believe that my emotion is in the paint as it is applied. With my love for horses and the Australian outback much of my work revolves around these subjects.” Betty is predominately a self-taught artist but, in 2000, she completed a Certificate lll in Art
and Fundamentals in Broome and received a dedication award for her efforts. Betty can be contacted direct on 0439 968 538 or via email at bettyrupeart@bigpond.com. Moving the earth at Roebourne An employment and training partnership has provided successful employment outcomes for a number of local Indigenous people working at the Yaburriji Estate development in Roebourne. When completed, the Yaburriji Estate will include residential housing, public open spaces, commercial areas and road pavements over an area of 72 hectares. Extensive works to complete the estate are exposing the workers to a broad range of transferrable employment skills, ranging from bulk earthworks, road works, sewerage and water reticulation, underground power and telecommunication installation, to detailed earthworks and fencing. Pilbara Joblink’s Bridges Indigenous Employment Program has worked in partnership with Brierty to facilitate the employment of four workers on the Yaburriji Estate. “Brierty has been very pro-active in sourcing local Indigenous employees to work on their project,” Stephanie Soter, CEO of Pilbara Joblink, said. “Recently, Brierty sponsored two of our clients to attend a one week training course in Perth.
“We are excited about future opportunities for our clients with Brierty.” Ms Soter said successful and supportive partnerships, such as with Brierty, were essential for gaining sustainable employment outcomes for Indigenous people in our community. Brierty Indigenous Engagement Manager Philip Paul said, “We are building Indigenous leaders and role models in our business by providing career paths that suit the individual.” Brierty’s commitment to Indigenous employment was highlighted in a recent announcement that outlined its intention to increase its Indigenous workforce from the current total of 60, or 12.5 per cent of its total workforce, to 200. Travers Pickett, who has worked with Brierty for seven and a half months, said the Company was great to work for. “It helps out with training and provides good support,” Mr Pickett said. Lyle Dodd (Wally) who has worked with Brierty for eight months said he has “ found it a rewarding life experience which makes me look towards a good future in longterm employment with Brierty’s”.

That’s a wrap for NAIDOC By Courtney Bertling It was a huge week of NAIDOC celebrations, which finished up last Sunday with the NAIDOC Idols taking the stage with Casey Donovan and Troy Cassar-Daley. The week started off with footy fever (see page 28) and officially opened on Sunday, June 1 at the Roebourne School Oval and Old Reserve with elder stories, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) food, traditional dance; then an evening concert featuring Fitzroy Express with MC Narelda Jacobs. On the Monday night, at the Wickham Community Hall, children were entertained by fun activities, there were cultural displays and a performance by the Blackstone Ramblers. The famous Australian chef, Mark Olive, made his way down to the Dampier’s Hampton Oval on the Tuesday night to hold
a cooking demonstration and a master chef cook-off with some of the locals. Contestants included Bianca Crake, Audrey Cosmos, Tracy Jones, Vicki Kirk and Barbara Graham. After an hour-long fierce battle over the Webers, the title of NAIDOC Master Chef 2012, was won by Vicki Kirk, who admitted she had never cooked kangaroo before. Also, the inspirational musicians of the Yabu Band performed and proved yet again, why they are such a popular act in the region. A Naidoc Health and Wellbeing event featured a Mawarnkarra (MHS) Family Day and a healthy babies competition at the Roebourne School Oval, and later that night the Unsung Hero’s Awards were held. Woodside made a presentation to the community of the Woodside Conservation Agreement on the Thursday and later that night, locals were invited to the Wickham Picture Gardens for a short film festival and

live music. Short films from featuring works by Tyson Mowarin, the Love Punks and the community of Roebourne were shown on the big screen, followed by a performance by Red Ochre. On the Friday, ATSI performers danced the night away at the Point Samson Community Reserve, as did boot-scooters and DJ Jardi dropped the beats for everyone to dance to. And finally, at the closing ceremony last Sunday, the NAIDOC Idol finalists performed (to find out who would take the title), as well as ATSI dancers and the Blackstone Ramblers. The festival also included performances by renowned comedian Sean Choolburra, former Australian Idol Casey Donovan and band and Troy Cassar-Daley.

Wildlife watch: Rainbow Bee-eater The Rainbow Bee-eater, Merops ornatus, is the only species of Meropidae found in Australia. Rainbow bee-eaters are brilliantly colored birds that grow to be 19-24cm (max 28cm) in length, including the elongated tail feathers. The upper back and wings are green in color, and the lower back and under-tail coverts are bright blue. The undersides of the wings and primary flight feathers are red and tipped with black, and the tail is black to deep violet. The rainbow bee-eater’s two central tail feathers are longer than the other tail feathers, and are longer in the male rainbow bee-eaters than in the females. The crown of the head, the stomach and breast, and the throat are pale yellowish in color, and the rainbow beeeater has a black bib and a black stripe through its red eye. Rainbow bee-eaters are a common species and can be found during the summer in forested areas in most of southern Australia excluding Tasmania. They migrate north during the winter into northern Australia. They may be found in open
woodlands, beaches, dunes, cliffs, mangroves, woodlands and they often visits parks and private gardens. Like all bee-eaters, rainbow bee-eaters are very social birds. When they are not breeding they roost together in large groups in dense undergrowth or large trees. Breeding season is before and after the rainy season in the north, and from November to January in the south. Rainbow bee-eaters are believed to mate for life. The male will bring the female insects while she digs the burrow that will be their nest. The bee-eater digs its burrow by balancing on its wings and feet, and digs with its bill, then pushing loose soil

backwards with its feet while balancing on its bill. The nest tunnel is very narrow, and the birds’ bodies press so tightly against the tunnel walls that when the birds enter and exit their movement acts like a piston, pumping in fresh air and pushing out stale air. The female lays between 3 and 7 glossy white eggs, which are incubated for about 24 days until hatching. The young bee-eaters fledge after about 30 days and are fed by both parents, as well as any older bee-eaters that may not have paired off or have lost their mate. Rainbow bee-eaters mostly eat flying insects, but, as their name implies, they have a real taste for bees. Once it spots an insect a bee-eater will swoop down from its perch and catch it in its long, slender, black bill and fly back to its perch. Bee-eaters will then knock their prey against their perch to subdue it. Even though rainbow beeeaters are actually immune to the stings of bees and wasps, upon capturing a bee they will rub the insect’s stinger against their perch to remove it, closing their eyes to avoid being squirted with poison from the ruptured poison sac.

The Naturalist’ Corner: The trouble with trees... By Jenny Fox It never ceases to amaze me how developers and some homeowners in the Pilbara continue to plant trees totally inappropriate to the area and space they are put in. I see it while having a drive around the new subdivisions in Karratha. It is quite a shame as the tree is only going to get to a couple of years of age before it will be removed or cut down due the damage, or potential damage it will cause. Time and time again I see trees and shrubs planted that close to a house they are almost under the eaves, or close to fence lines or driveways with no apparent thought to what is going to happen in years to come (or do the developers think it is not going to be their problem). The latest craze seems to be those (non indigenous) purple cottonwood hibiscus that are fast growing and might look good in a 20cm pot but grow into big trees with large root systems. Landscapers seem to like planting three or four of these quite close together in small front yards - it’s laughable. These trees, once mature, reach five to eight metres high and five to six metres wide, yet you can see them planted within a couple of metres of each other.
New houses these days take up most of the block, leaving no room for a tree (or trees) that is going to potentially grow to six to 10 meters in height and have a canopy that will spread or become top heavy and be a danger during cyclone season. No one wants their driveway lifted or their sewer pipes invaded or worse during a ‘big blow’ - the tree topples on the roof - so why do people still insist on planting the wrong species. I heard comments just the other day from a group viewing the You Tube video about promotion of “Karratha City of the North”, where the artist had put what looked like Poinciana trees in the middle of a shopping mall and while it may only be an illustration, if they do indeed use those trees, do they not realise how messy these trees are when they lose their flowers and canopy at certain times of the year? It doesn’t take a layperson to notice that it is the wrong species for that set up. Am I too cynical that I can’t see why someone would plant something for the sake of it, when in a couple of years it will be removed or chopped down, especially in an age where we are encouraged to plant trees to reduce carbon and there are plenty of suitable species if people only took the time to undertake a little research.

Frontman Felix, along with Harry, Ollie, Ryan, Will, the duo “Empire Horns” and aforementioned Jumps have charged through the past decade performing in excess of 800 shows in Australia and internationally, with more than 100 songs and five albums to their credit. It’s quite a feat for this multitalented cohort who’ve stuck together like a family from scratch, and Jumps speaks for the band when he says they’re still going strong. “We keep finding ways to ignite our passion for the band and the music which is really important, to maintain something for so long. “We’ve had many ups and downs through the journey but we’re really still a tight unit.” Dealing with difference and change has been an essential element of the band’s growth. “The relationship gets stronger and we build better and it’s a really good time for everyone actually,” Jumps adds. The North West Festival will be the
band’s first gig for a while, with The Cat Empire currently preparing to rehearse for their next album. That said, hometown Melbourne is a tad chilly at the moment (cue Pilbara residents pulling off their jumpers at 11am) so a warm winter sojourn is something these seasoned travellers will look forward to. “It’s a good opportunity to play in an area where we usually wouldn’t play,” adds Jumps. “Playing alongside Hilltop Hoods and the Living End is also something great to be part of.” Jumps has a ball on stage and believes a top performance is a combination of the band nailing their music and feeding off a great crowd. “The best show for me is when we really feel like we’ve played well and we’ve had good fun and the crowd have really enjoyed it, making noise, dancing, enjoying it however they want. “That’s the best, when it all comes together and you have a moment, I guess, at a concert.” Fans have their moments too, a case

in point being an early Edinburgh gig during which an enthusiastic audience member tossed what appeared to be a black pudding on stage. “He pegged that at us, but we actually caught it,” Jumps laughs. Indeed, rather than find this random protein supply frustrating, the band saw it as a free food moment, took the bloody morsel home and cooked it up. The Cat Empire now tours internationally twice a year and another trip to Europe is on the cards in wintry December following their escape to the north west. In the meantime, the band is anticipating some keen weather and a whirlwind chance to check out the sights. “I’m pretty sure we’ll be there for most of the day on the Saturday, so I think we’ve got some things planned,” Jumps muses. Take note fisherman: come August 18 beware of cool cats cruising Hedland waters - it will be a no bananas or black pudding kind of day.

Your p concie ersonal rge By Courtney Bertling
Ever have those late night cravings for Maccas, KFC, Chicken Treat or any other fast food, but you’ve either been drinking, or just can’t be bothered driving? Well now you don’t have to get in your car at all to sustain those cravings. Two backpackers, Mathew and Julian, have come up with a way to deliver your food right to your doorway. It’s called Concierge Express. You name it! Feel like Munchies and a Dare Iced Coffee from Caltex, no problem! Want an Asian treat from Noodle Box, no hassle! Your personal concierge can bring you whatever you want. The idea came to the boys after realizing that it is something that people prefer not to do. They’re hungry, but either drunk or too tired to drive. Who said backpackers do nothing for this town?
Already, the boys have been taking heaps of orders and leave their clients wanting more. The boys can deliver to your house everyday between 6pmmidnight and on Friday and Saturday, deliveries can be done between midnight and 4am. It’s simple, just SMS your order and address to 0447 378 273. Deliveries will cost you $16 everyday between 6-10pm, $28 everyday between 10pm12am and $45 on Friday and Saturday between 12-4am. These prices do not include the cost of the order and must be paid in cash. Conceirge Express only service Karratha. “It’s a great idea, now I don’t have to wait for a cab when I’ve been drinking and feel like a Big Mac!” Taylor Palmer said. “It’s easy and simple, perfect for the Pilbara lifestyle,” Shane Gray said.

Two decades of Cossack Art In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Cossack Art Award, the Shire of Roebourne and Principal Partner Rio Tinto have worked with coordinators Archipelago Arts and Artsource to prepare a special program for the community. “This year we will mark two decades of the award and, in recognition of this milestone, we aim to present an event that is bigger and better than ever before,” explained Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig. A special celebration night for sponsors will take place prior to the official opening of the Cossack Art Award.
Renowned arts commentator Fenella Kernebone will host the sponsor’s Preview Night with performances by members of the WA Opera.
Offering free events to local communities and visitors to the region, the program highlights the history and progression of the community and the Award.
Judges Franchesca Cubillo and Alan Dodge will announce the winners at the invite only Awards Night which will be officially opened by the Hon Brendon Grylls MLA on July 21.
The program includes an Arts and Culture Trail, Artist in Residence drawing workshops, a Judges Floor Talk, the Cossack Family Day, an Education Program and the unique 20x20x20 Exhibition.
A selection of Voyager Estate wines will be served and the ESS NYFL catering team will provide a variety of tasty dishes on both evenings. The community is invited to take part in an exciting new public program schedule.
This year we will mark two decades of the award and, in recognition of this milestone, we aim to present an event that is bigger and better than ever before
Further information on the 2012 Cossack Art Award public program is available on the Shire of Roebourne website, or email cossack.art@ roebourne.wa.gov.au or call 0417 805 128.

Watch it at the movies Friends with Kids (MA) Friends With Kids is a daring and poignant ensemble comedy about a close-knit circle of friends at that moment in life when children arrive and everything changes. The last two singles in the group observe the effect that kids have had on their friends’ relationships and wonder if there’s a better way. They decide to have a kid together - and date
other people. There are big laughs and unexpected emotional truths as this unconventional ‘experiment’ leads everyone in the group to question the nature of friendship, family and, finally, true love. Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In Brave, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an ageold custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord
MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late. People can watch Brave at the Woodside Moonrise Cinema on Friday, July 20 at 7pm. To purchase tickets, head to www.roeboourne.wa.gov.au/wmc

Big name Australian artists Shannon Noll, James Blundell, Ella Hooper and Catherine Britt have joined forces to create an original song. The song will mark 10 years of the Telstra Road to Discovery music development program, and are calling on North WA independent artists to now enter this year’s program. To celebrate the milestone, the artists collaborated with current and former Telstra Road to Discovery winners in the ultimate jam session, during a road trip from Sydney to Tamworth, where it all began 10 years ago. Established and emerging artists working together illustrates the guiding principles behind the Telstra Road to Discovery: collaboration, mentorship, opportunity and music development. Telstra Road to Discovery is one of Australia’s most recognised talent development programs, across a range of genres including blues and roots, folk, country and alternative country. The program puts emerging artists in touch with influential figures in the music industry, takes their music to a wider audience and increases their media exposure. Telstra Road to Discovery creates a new audience for independent songwriters and performers to share their music. This year’s entrants will compete at one of 12 live heat events held across every state and territory in coming months, or as part of the digital heat and separate songwriter category, with
the final winners receiving the major prize packages. Telstra Road to Discovery is a truly national program that offers opportunities for music artists no matter where they live, from metropolitan cities to regional towns. The digital heat is available for artists unable to travel or who live more than 300km from their nearest heat event, while songwriters can also enter online. Winners of each of the 12 performance heats and digital heat, together with the four best songwriters will be flown to Melbourne in November to take part in Boot Camp, a three day music mentoring workshop involving some of the biggest names in the music industry covering all sections of the music business – from publishing and touring, through to song construction, performance, and publicity. Artists will then compete in the Semi-final event where the Top 10 artists will go through to the Final held during the annual Tamworth Country Music Festival in January 2013, where one winning performer and songwriter will be announced. The ultimate performer and songwriter winners will each receive a highly sought after 12 month music mentorship which consists of a tailored music development fund, plus a return trip to Nashville USA including a showcase gig at the Americana Festival, local gigs in Australia and New Zealand, and face time with some of the biggest names in Australian music. Laughs for The Midwives of the Pilbara your kids Hayley Brown said that after reading some of the other ‘midwives’ stories, it seems that a lot of mums have been lucky to have Shirley as their midwife for their labour.
Play is the way children are introduced to the world they live in. Through imaginative play children are able to try new things, practise skills and develop individual and social structures. Karratha Community House Playgroups provide a model environment for early childhood development through play. With fun and enjoyment at the forefront, your child will benefit from learning simple rules and routines as well as new games and play experiences! Through interacting with other children and responding to different adults, children will develop stronger social and communication skills. Playgroups are not only designed to benefit children. By joining a Karratha Community House Playgroup you will meet other local parents and share invaluable information and experiences, often resulting in long lasting friendships. It is a terrific opportunity for you to become a part of the local community and develop a strong network of support with other members.

Keeping sporting talent in the regions Talented athletes from across regional Western Australia will get access to more opportunities to pursue excellence in their home environment thanks to $3.6million in Regional Development Council Action Agenda funding made available through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program. The Department of Sport and Recreation will partner with State sporting associations and regional development councils to establish the State-wide Regional Talent Development Network. The department will work closely with stakeholders in regions across WA, including the South West
Academy of Sport and the Mid West Sports Federation, to develop the best model to service talented athletes in their region. Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said the network aimed to delay the need for athletes to leave their local environment at a young age to access talent development squads. “Generally, regional athletes have to travel to Perth to access talent development opportunities which places a huge financial burden on families,” Mr Waldron said. “It’s ultimately a loss to the regional community as well - we want to keep young people in their
home towns and ensure they can access the same opportunities as their city counterparts. Royalties for Regions is helping to address this.” Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the funding represented the single greatest investment in regional talent development ever undertaken in WA. “Many of our country’s best athletes have come from regional WA and this unprecedented investment by a WA government in establishing a Regional Talent Development Network represents our recognition of that,” Mr Grylls said.

Calling all contemporary dancers
South American, very olive skin, long braided hair
Ovation Performance Company’s very own Pilbara girl, Treya Long, has returned to her roots to offer budding dancers a taste of the Western Australian Academy of Arts, affectionately known as WAAPA. Ms Long is in the final semester of the two year Certificate II in Dance which focuses on Contemporary Dance and Classical Ballet. During this time Treya has committed herself to 9 hours of dance a week under the tuition of Ivan Salmin, previously with the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre in Russia, and Sharleen Campbell who is herself a graduate of WAAPA. Ms Long knows all too well the broad interpretation of contemporary dance, and is eager to share her WAAPA experiences with those who are keen to explore this exciting form of dance. “Contemporary dance is often about finding ways to express what you get from a certain piece of music, or to tell a story or communicate an idea or message. Through contemporary you are able to explore ways the body can be moved, rather than relying on traditional forms of dance movement. It’s much more abstract,” Treya says.

Ms Long plans to follow a typical WAAPA class format that involves warming up, strengthening and stretching, floor work such as rolls and making contact with the floor with different parts of the body. This will be followed by across the floor sequences using brushes, travel and small, medium and big jumps. Ms Long plans to expose students to music they may not have heard before and provide the opportunity for discussion on how to approach choreography of contemporary pieces. These workshops are open to anyone with an interest in Contemporary dance: both beginners, who have experience in moving their body, be it through sport or another form of dance as well as those with
more experience in dance. Workshops will be held at the Dampier Community Hall and are $10 each. Beginner Workshops: Wednesday 18th July for 8-12 years 3-4pm and 13 years plus, 4.15pm-5.45pm. Intermediate Workshops: Thursday 19th July for 8-12 years (3-4pm) and 13 years plus, 4.15pm-5.45pm. Ms Long welcome’s local dance teachers to attend the workshops and either participate or observe. Bring a drink bottle and wear clothing that provides free movement of the body. Contemporary dance is conducted in bare feet. Registration essential to confirm your place, info@ ovationperformance.com. au or by calling 0408 142 560.

Wasp Storm Round six of the Pilbara Rugby League saw the Karratha Storm host the Wickham Wasps. Due to goal post issues at Tambrey Oval, Storms home ground, the game had to be relocated to Bulgarra Oval at late notice. Wasps got off to a strong start, putting the first try on the board after Mikolaj Cherrington darted out of dummy half catching the Storm by surprise. Storm quickly hit back and for much of the first half both teams were swapping tries, due to lazy goal line defence. Wasps managed to score back to back tries and then hold out the Storm attack to be eight points up going into the break. The second half was an arm-wrestle early, with both forward packs trying to gain the upper hand. As a result there were some big hits and some fiery confrontations that threatened to boil over. To both sides credit, they remained disciplined and nothing progressed further than a push and shove. Defence was strong and it took a wellplaced kick from half back Luke Walker, which was swooped on by Mananui Tito to break the dead lock. From then on the Wasps controlled the game through their solid goal line defence, allowing the Storm to only cross once in the second half out wide. The game was secured for the Wasps when Willie Live burst on to a short ball close to the line and crashed over for his

second try of the match. Storm was far from disgraced with many strong performances from their players. Tim Tupou from the Storm commented, “We are the new side in the competition and expectations were high after winning both the 7’s and the Pre-season comp earlier this season. “We still have a long way to go but we are confident that we will figure in the finals. “Thank you to all our helpers and sponsors.” Best players for the Storm were Rawiri Thompson, Chad Nepia and K. Ripia. The Wasps were lead from the front by captain Junior Tuliau, with Willie Live and Mikolaj Cherrington also having strong games. Unfortunately the other game for the round did not take place as the Broncos were unable to travel to Hedland, giving the ladder leaders, Hawks, the points by forfeit. Next Saturday sees the both games played in Karratha. The Hawks take on the Roosters at Millars Well oval and the Broncos host the Storm at Bulgarra. It will be hard to pick a winner from both these matches as the competition heads in to the business end of the season.
Popular Racehorse Racso had his fans cheering after he took out The $30,000 Telfer Goldmine Marble Bar Cup (1600m) last Saturday. Well known on The W.A. Country circuit, Racso added The Marble Bar Cup to his impressive resume, which also includes victories in The Pingrup and Meekatharra Cups, plus numerous placings in big races. In front of a crowd of around 2000 people, Racso gave his supporters a scare after he missed the start, but Jockey, Edward Creighton gradually worked his way into the race, passing the also rans. Near the corner, it looked a race in three with Noble Steed in the middle, leader Kingtar trying to hang on and Racso joining in three wide. In the straight, Kingtar and Racso settled down for the fight and Kingtar fought hard, with Racso only gaining victory on the line. It was a stirring finish, worthy of the tremendous prizemoney offered by The Club and Sponsor, Newcrest Mining. Leading Jockey, Jeffrey Berry rode a double on the day and Favourite punters were cheering when Princess Deidre won The $11,000 Quality Survey Sprint (1400m). Victory was never in doubt as Princess Deidre led throughout to win from Major Bligh who ran home well for 2nd. Berry gave South Hedland Trainer, Dean Cocivera a welcome change of luck with Street Player easily winning
The $10,000 BC Iron Handicap(1600m). Although he was well back in the field, the leaders compounded quickly and Street Player found himself challenging very suddenly. In the straight, Street Player zoomed away for a four length win from I’m a Toff, who missed the start badly, but ran home well. Viking Lad was a strong winner of The $11,000 Bidge Welsh Memorial Handicap (1200m). Carrying top weight of 63.5 kilos, Viking Lad showed his class, plus the nous of veteran Jockey, Danny Miller to just claim victory from the leader, Steel Blue. Keyruna backed up his impressive Roebourne second placing, with a convincing win in The $10,000 BJ Young Handicap (1200m). After an early battle with The Kid, Keyruna kicked away in the straight for a nice two length win. Come Quickly backed up his consistent form with a well deserved win in The $9,750 Talga Gold Maiden(1200m). Sent to the front before the turn, Come Quickly dashed away and looked set for an easy win. Brynbella did rattle home in the final stages, but Come Quickly held on to breakthrough at his 17th race start. The Marble Bar Race Club were happy with the attendance and the weekend was enjoyed by both partygoers and racegoers alike. Roebourne races were on this Saturday, with their Ladies Day Meeting.

Lovett takes out Karratha Challenge By Courtney Bertling Racing was extremely close last weekend at the 2012 Karratha Challenge with Robbo Lovett taking out the open feature. Karratha Enduro and Motocross Club president Shaun Barry said the Karratha Challenge is to challenge the local riders with state riders. “It is about getting riders that race at state level to come up and put it to our local riders on their home track and also some good entertainment for the spectators,” he said. “The weekend went well, good riding was done by all junior and senior riders across the board. “Hannah Lovett rode well winning clubman and the ladies class and taking out the hole shot in both classes.
“Tyson Lind rode well all weekend with a third in pro lites, second in pro open, third in the 20 minute feature race and taking out the hole shot in pro lites and feature race.” Barry also mentioned Tony Case’s excellent riding skills, taking out the quad feature for the day with his first race back after injuring himself seven weeks ago. Also back on the Karratha track after a four year break to race over east with Honda, was Brent Landman, taking out second place in the pro open and fifth in the 2-wheel feature. It was a close finish for Kevin Davis and Jake Louis in the Senior Quad and also with Grant Eastwell and Dylan Hogen in the Junior Lites.
