We saw a flock of feathers and big hats as the Pilbara ladies headed to the Roebourne race track on Saturday, July 14 for the Nor West Jockey Club Ladies Day. This was by far the most popular race day this year, with higher expectations for Cup Day on August 11. The ladies had gone all out this year and all looked fantastic with the men looking equally as good with a few choice suits standing out in the crowd. Local boutique Cool Change hosted the Fashions on the Field, where men and women paraded

on the stage in their best suits and dresses. They also provided a fashion parade with lines from their casual range and dresses for the next race day. The Karratha Visitor Centre provided buses to and from the event, which were all completely full. For full race results see page 26.

Move over Big Day Out - the inaugural North West Festival is gearing up to hit town with The Hilltop Hoods and chief supports The Living End and The Cat Empire. Meanwhile, with Regurgitator, Dead Letter Circus and San Cisco also on the bill, Sunset Events have just released details on the last remaining spot up for grabs for local artists from the Pilbara Region, via their “Best of North West” competition. The competition, in partnership with WAM, is open to any solo artists, duos and bands who perform original music and reside in the Pilbara Region. Artists just need to head to www.northwestfestival.com.au to find out how to submit their electronic press kit. Four finalists will not only battle live at the Matt Dann Cultural Centre on Friday, August 17, but find out that night if they’re set to play in the official NWF line up on Saturday! Managing Director of Sunset Events David Chitty says that the stakeholders are on board for this brand new festival, artists are locked in and sales have been busy. “Looks like we’ve captured the imagination of the Pilbara region. “Over half the sales are from people outside the Pilbara,” he says.

“A lot of people are travelling to the Port Hedland region which is fantastic news as this was part of the ideal.” He says he’s getting a lot of support from people in the town too. “Generally, up here people are saying yes because they evidently want something like this. “There’s a gap there for the town, so this is great.” Mr Chitty adds that camping seems to be a bonus for people as it makes the accommodation situation easier. “I’ve heard a lot of people come up to Broome or Onslow and now they can come here.” “There’s always going to be a challenge, but there’s always got to be a first time. “I think the difference here is that so many people want the event – a lot of people are helping with logistical issues and will then get to enjoy the bigger picture.” Mr Chitty believes people in the Pilbara are entitled to special things taken for granted in the city. “I think that Perth benefits a lot from what’s happening in this region and we’re just part of that picture, giving back to the places up here.” Tickets start at $129 and, if not sold out, will be on sale at the festival gates for $150 - cash only.

The name of the poison baits, more commonly known as ten eighty (1080) is one of the most toxic substances and was first synthesised in Belgium in 1896. During the 1940s it proved to be extremely toxic for rabbits and rodents and was first used in WA in 1953 for rabbit control. During the 1960s scientists discovered the same toxin was found naturally in many of the native plants growing in the South-West. Further testing into the 1970’s & 80’s was undertaken to look at the tolerance of native fauna with the toxin and surprisingly the wildlife species that cohabitated areas where the plants grew had a high tolerance to the toxin. An example Landscope gave was a brush tail possum from the South West that had a tolerance of 150 times higher than an Eastern or Southern State possum, thus giving the conservation managers quite a unique weapon to use against the ferals.

Research trials were then conducted in small Wheatbelt reserves, where it showed that fox baiting with 1080 increased the number of native mammals being studied. Into the 1990s, the baiting was trialled in a broadscale aerial baiting program (operation foxglove) through the northern Jarrah forests where it demonstrated that the native carnivore, the Chuditch (South Western Quoll) was not adversely affected.

Karratha City Centre Traders Reference Group

1080 baits are used on the Burrup Peninsula and some of the islands in the Archipelago and are all part of the Western Shield program.

LandCorp and the Shire of Roebourne recognise that an important part of Karratha City Centre Infrastructure Works Project is to keep residents as well as owners and occupiers of businesses within the city centre well informed on the project stages.

Key to this will be the formation of a City Centre Traders Reference Group (CCTRG), intended to be an important forum within the project’s overall communications framework. The primary objectives of this group will be to:

• Consider issues and impacts of the project on the community

Warnings are put out for locals about taking pet dogs out on the Burrup, but still many a pet has perished from eating a bait when owners have gone out camping or picnicking, taking the pooch along. On a point of interest, the infamous Red Dog was poisoned by a strychnine bait, not 1080.

• Circulate relevant information from CCTRG meetings to the wider community.

Individuals selected for the CCTRG will become vital contributors in realising the Karratha City Centre vision.

Chevron to seek local workers for wheatstone • Chris Adams with Brendon Grylls and Mike Moloney overlooking Sharpe Avenue which will soon be transformed

Shire appoints new CEO Roebourne Shire Council has appointed a new Chief Executive Officer to lead the Shire of Roebourne. Chris Adams resigned from his role as Pilbara Cities Office Manager on July 17 and will commence work as Shire of Roebourne CEO in September. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said in addition to leading the Pilbara Cities Office, Mr Adams had also served as CEO of both the Town of Port Hedland and the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley and would bring a wealth of local government experience to the role. “Chris was born in Dampier, in the Shire of Roebourne, and brings a lifetime of local knowledge to the role,” Councillor White-Hartig said.

“I have no doubt he will transition into the role with ease and lead the Shire for many years to come.” Mr Adams said he was confident the organisation would continue to improve the quality of services and facilities available throughout the various townships. “I am looking forward to building on the progress that the Shire has made over the past few years,” Mr Adams said. “I’m also excited to become more integrally involved with the transformation of the Shire and am eager to get my teeth into the exciting opportunities and challenges that are facing the Council both now and into the future.”

and this goes back to the establishment of the National Resource Sector Jobs Board by the federal government. “There should be a Tripartite process in place to establish that workers applying for these jobs are being evaluated fairly and being given every opportunity to work on these types of projects, Wheatstone included,” he said. “Chevron would do well to include family friendly rosters of three weeks on and one week off during the construction stage to attract workers to the project especially those from Interstate; to that end Chevron should talk to us as the union which represents the majority of construction workers in this state and nationally on an agreement which would appeal to attract maximum workers and maintain them as a quality and productive workforce. “Our door is always open.” The building of Wheatstone will also require numerous semi-skilled workers who can be trained and brought up to spec reasonably fast, so there’s no excuse to import semi-skilled workers from overseas. “We will also continue to campaign for Chevron and other resource companies to contribute towards the WA Construction Training Fund to ensure our young people and mature aged workers can be trained and re-skilled to work on projects such as Wheatstone,” Mr Buchan said.

A workers union is hoping that Chevron can source local workers rather than use an Enterprise Migration Agreement for its Wheatstone project. The CFMEU WA cautiously welcomes the announcement by Chevron that they will seek to employ 5000 local workers over the use of EMA’s. CFMEU state secretary Mick Buchan said that while on the surface it seems like positive news, they hope it is not a political stunt. Chevron and Minister Simon O’Brien stated they tested the market to a preconceived plan of a shortfall allowing Chevron to say “we looked but didn’t find” and then enter into an EMA agreement. Mr Buchan backed this by stating there are practical things which can be done to hire the local workers needed. “Chevron would be advised to waiver the worker blacklist through the ERMs system, and to be less stringent in the need to require workers only with experience on similar projects,” he said. “There are plenty of workers with the readymade skills who can work on Wheatstone to get it up and running, but who perhaps haven’t had so called mine site experience, let alone experience on a gas project. “The fact is these workers can do the jobs required.” Mr Buchan said compliance is also an issue

It came to them like lightning. It frazzled brains and ears. It made them all stampede for home like camels to a beer.

That’s right, for Hedland got it (‘bout bloody time! They cried), their tvs tuned to digital, their brains all set to fry.

For “The Shire” took on the masses, plump lipped big tit…tering. The hotness dripped like eyeliner as the bimbos cried Kaching!

Karratha’s like, “Whatever.” They joined this century right back there in the olden days (when five year olds were three).

Hurrah for new technology, the bringer of great glory, OK, so MasterChef’s near done but that’s just half the story.

Those boobies did not move at all, ripe coconuts quite static. Just plug them in and turn them on they fire on automatic.

Even Pannawonica, hid off the beaten track, put hands on hips said, “Ha ha ha, we got it first. Take that!”

Amongst the sparkly tv world where snow’s banished to WIN the ladies sat, sucked in, ah dear, and the fellas gawked like sin.

Not that I was watching it, that digital display. I’m way too posh, tucked up in bed… With “Fifty Shades of Grey”.

The message flew like pindan dust. A bloke named Robbie first put out the word from cyber space, “Carn youse all, quench that thirst!”

For what great gift the tele brought In digital display, a show, no, a revelation. Get got sucked in, today.

Have your say on industrial land development in Onslow.

The Ashburton North Strategic Industrial Area (ANSIA) is being master planned to accommodate a hydrocarbon processing and associated industries precinct. The ANSIA, located 12km south west of Onslow, comprises approximately 8,000ha and will include a State Port, Common-User Coastal Area, Multi-User Infrastructure Corridors and Heavy Industrial Area for LNG and Hydrocarbon processing. We are proposing to initially develop a 100ha Support/General Industrial Area to accommodate supporting services for the Ashburton North proponents during the construction and operation of the Strategic Industrial Area. To help us cater to the demand for industrial land in Ashburton North, and ensure the optimum planning of the estate, we are inviting interested parties to complete our online survey. We have engaged a sales agent to contact businesses that complete our online survey to discuss their specific needs, provided that permission to contact is given. The results of the survey will help determine the size and layout of the first stage of the General Industrial Area and ensure the estate is planned in a way that meets the requirements of all potential users. The survey closes midday (WST) Wednesday 8 August. For more information visit landcorp.com.au/ashburtonnorthindustrial

Companies sign historic contract NANA Australia, a newly created subsidiary of NANA Development Corporation (NDC), a US$1.8 billion Alaska native people-owned company – has formalised a strategic alliance with Pilbarabased Aboriginal company PLWA Group. The agreement gives NANA Australia immediate access to an established workforce and enhances PLWA Group’s capability to bid for larger, more demanding projects. “This is the first contract between companies owned by the Indigenous Alaskan Iñupiat people and Australian Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islanders,” said NANA Australia, CEO Simon Haigh. “It is also NANA Australia’s first alliance agreement. We prioritised an agreement with PLWA Group because of their quality and reliability, with their Indigenous foundation being a terrific fit with our own company’s culture.”

NANA Australia’s initial focus will be the construction, facilities management and capability development areas, with modular and camp construction being a high priority. In addition, its oil and gas, federal contracting and technology capabilities will soon to come into operation. PLWA Group Business Manager, Geoff Stocker, said that PLWA Group is very excited to be a part of this alliance with NANA Australia. “We are very much looking forward to winning our first project and growing the relationship from there,” he said. “We are very optimistic about the opportunities to replicate the success NDC has enjoyed in the US. “Both culturally and commercially, we see this as an excellent fit for both parties, providing a unique proposition to the project market in our region.”

Crucial ocean and climate research Crucial climate and marine research is being conducted in the ocean off the Pilbara coast with $6million assistance over three years from the State Government. Science and Innovation Minister John Day said the Western Australian Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) utilised a new array of moored buoys, ocean gliders and acoustic listening stations that were gathering important climate and weather data. “The Liberal-National Government is committed to growing our science capability for the benefit of marine industries and the community as a whole,” Mr Day said. “The Government’s $6million investment provides research infrastructure to enable the State’s world-class marine and ocean scientists to generate new insights and understanding, ensuring the sustainable management of waters off the coast of WA for future generations.” Working from its Research Vessel Solander, Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is operating moored buoys at three sites near Dampier on the Pilbara coast, in water depths from 50 to 400 metres. The buoys have sensors measuring ocean temperature, salinity, currents and water quality. This data will be used to improve numerical models of the ocean, used by scientists and managers in government and industry.

WHAT’S COMING UP AT THE WALKINGTON AMPHITHEATRE • Horizon Power’s Education Officer Julie Hughes and Rio Tinto Superintendent Projects and Compliance Utilities Jason Briggs educating the Year 3 students at Dampier Primary School about energy efficiency and electrical safety

Students become energy wise Children in Pilbara schools recently learnt about electricity. More than 1000 children who live in towns across the Pilbara benefited from electrical awareness and energy efficiency education, delivered by Horizon Power, under a new partnership with Rio Tinto. Horizon Power’s Education Officer Julie Hughes visited six primary schools last month in the towns of Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Wickham, Dampier and Pannawonica – spreading the word to the next generation about how electricity works, electrical safety and how to reduce energy use. “The children were really interested in learning about electricity, particularly the journey electricity takes through the network system to their homes,” Miss Hughes said. She was joined by Rio Tinto Superintendent Projects and Compliance Utilities Jason Briggs, who informed students of Rio Tinto’s involvement in the community and reinforced the importance of safety. Horizon Power is partnering with Rio Tinto to deliver Horizon Discovery Zone to schools in Pilbara towns, with more than $50,000 invested in the program over the next three years. Rio Tinto General Manager Utilities

Division Momcilo Andric said Rio Tinto was committed to raising awareness of electrical safety, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. “We are working in partnership with Horizon Power to deliver a range of interactive and engaging workshops to primary school children across the Pilbara,” Mr Andric said. Horizon Power’s Horizon Discovery Zone education program, developed in 2010, has been rolled out to primary schools in most regional areas serviced by Horizon Power. Horizon Power Managing DirectorElect Frank Tudor said Horizon Power was proud to partner with Rio Tinto to share the utilities expertise in regional and remote education delivery around all aspects of electricity, particularly safety. “Horizon Power is committed to creating both physical and intangible assets in the communities we service and educating our young people about how to be safe around electricity and how to use it smartly is just one way in which we are doing this,” Mr Tudor said. After the June visit, Paraburdoo Primary School teacher Tamra Quadrio said the students were all highly engaged and learnt a lot about electricity and how to use it efficiently and safely.

With the initial works package now completed, construction of new roadways, services and landscaping for the Warambie Road precinct is due to commence on 23 July 2012 as part of the Karratha City Centre Infrastructure Works project. Both the Shire of Roebourne and LandCorp agree the priority will be to keep residents, business owners and tenants in the city centre well informed on the progress of works undertaken as part of this project. “From 23 July until the end of October 2012 there will be some disruption to traffic movements, including a road closure between Sherlock Crescent and Sharpe Avenue along Warambie Road,” Ms Harvey said. “Works will also include the junction at Warambie Road and Harwood Way and alternative routes to access the Warambie Road precinct will be available by using Sherlock Crescent and Sharpe Avenue with two way access along these streets remaining open. “Local businesses in the area will remain open and trade as normal during the construction period. “The contractors, Downer Australia will provide signage and temporary barriers to protect the safety of the community around the works area and the speed limit on roads may be reduced. “Our contractors will endeavour to minimise disruption from the works for the people and businesses of Karratha,” Ms Harvey said.

Over 1500 workers across the Pilbara cheered at local rallies last weekend, to show their disapproval of companies choosing to hire overseas workers on visas. One of the rallies, held in front of the Shire of Roebourne Chamber Councils had a number of union members give powerful speeches to urge the large crowd to speak out against the Enterprise Migration Agreement (EMA) scheme. Gina Rinehart’s privately owned Hancock Prospecting is the first company to be given the go-ahead to import 1700 workers for its Roy Hill iron ore project in the Pilbara under the federal government’s Enterprise Migration Agreement (EMA) scheme. CFMEU State Secretary Mick Buchan said the community, TAFE sector, Indigenous communities and the school leavers all want to have a go in the resource sector. “It has us buggered as to why they (Gina Rinehart) are going down this line,” he said. “With an improved TAFE system, traineeships on offer and up skilling for those workers once entered the industry, there is plenty of work out there available for people, who not only live in the township of Karratha and Port Hedland, but also fly-in, fly-out workers from

Great Northern HWY overpass

• The signs say it all can not get into the industry workplace,” Mr Rudland said. “It took me a long time to get into the workplace, and that is only because I knew someone.” “We are here today to show our disapproval of the Government, to allow Gina Rinehart to carry out this selfish act of employing people from overseas, to come in and steal our jobs for our future generations,” Mr Keogh said. “We still stand united on a front to not allow this to happen.” CEPU assistant state secretary Jim Murie said it is not about racism. “We don’t care where an Australian has come from,” he said. “As long as they are Australian, they are locals! “Locals in the region, locals in the state, local from inter-state or locals across the ditch in New Zealand.”

A vehicle overpass is being built over the Great Northern Highway level crossing in South Hedland. Fortescue Metals Group Ltd and contractors Calibre and Abigroup have begun the construction of the vehicle overpass. The vehicle overpass, which will be built adjacent to the existing Great Northern Highway level crossing, will help maintain the flow of traffic into Port Hedland. C o n s t r u c t i o n is expected to be completed in early 2013 and will include a public observation platform to enable tourists and the community to view Fortescue trains carrying iron ore to the company’s Herb Elliott Port. Fortescue T155:Rail Project Works Manager, Jim Douch, said construction of the vehicle overpass followed a period of community consultation in 2011 and would enable a safer crossing of the railway. The overpass is being constructed in collaboration with Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) and will be built on a new section of road. The overpass is a part of Fortescue’s US$8.4 billion expansion program to increase iron ore production to 155M tonnes per annum.

the eastern states. “There are thousand, upon thousands of workers waiting to get onto one of those jobs, either in construction or mining.” Mr Buchan had spoken to many families who had moved here to look for work, or have lived here for some time and are struggling to get some of these jobs. “We are saying that locals should be given options for positions first, particularly in the semi-skilled occupations. “We know that specialized trades in the future, for example specialized instrument technicians and specialized welders, may be required to come in under the visa systems, and that’s fine, that is the way it is,” he said. “But we believe, and the community is telling us, and we know that there are people out there that are waiting just to have a go. “We are not going to give up, we are going to do whatever it takes to win this.” Local workers, Clint Rudland and Peter Keogh, said that their workplace, Monadelphous, supported the rally and offered workers five buses on the day to help with transport to and from the rally. “There is not enough training out there for the kids of tomorrow, and people that we know, who are qualified tradesman who

Weight Watchers close down After many years of Weight Watcher meetings being held in both Karratha and Hedland, the decision was made to cancel the service as of last Tuesday, July 17. Weight Watchers WA North area manager Jennifer Stone said that Weight Watchers aims to provide members with supportive meetings that are well attended in the right location and with the right offer for communities. “We feel that an interactive environment is critical in creating an encouraging atmosphere to

facilitate the achievement of weight loss goals,” she said. “We have recently reviewed meeting days and times and locations to ensure that the meetings we have running are providing our members with the best meeting possible to support you through your weight loss journey.” The outcome after the review was that there was not enough support from the community to continue to the meetings, leaving Weight Watchers with a loss of income.

However, Weight Watchers would like to continue to support locals on their weight loss journey with the ProPoints plan and have two-special offers. People can still receive a one-on-one personalised consultation, with the 13 week “At Home” program. They will receive weekly one-on-one phone support from an experienced At Home Consultant in a set 15 minute appointment. Or, for those who are computer savvy, people can access the tools and follow the plan online at their own pace; Weight Watchers Online could be just what you need. Driverless trucks achieve a new milestone Rio Tinto and Komatsu Ltd celebrated a new milestone when the new driverless trucks commenced hauling high grade iron ore at the Yandicoogina mine in Western Australia. The Junction South East (JSE) pit now has a fleet of 10 Komatsu driverless haul trucks which will move high grade ore for the first time, marking a major step towards full operational deployment of the project. The trucks will be used for all haulage requirements in the pit, moving high grade, low grade

and waste material from multiple loading units. Rio Tinto Iron Ore chief executive Sam Walsh and Komatsu Ltd president and chief executive officer Kunio Noji, were at Yandicoogina for the opening of the JSE autonomous pit. Mr Walsh said “The deployment of these trucks at Yandocoogina is the next step in our programme to introduce over 150 driverless trucks to our Pilbara operations, making us the world’s largest owner and

operator of these vehicles. “Autonomous haulage is an important component in our Mine of the FutureTM program. These new trucks will work with our pioneering Operations Centre that integrates and manages the logistics of 14 mines, three ports and two railways. They will be a critical part of our drive to outstanding safety and production efficiency as we grow our business towards 353 million tonnes a year. “Rio Tinto has been using Komatsu’s advanced truck technology at our mines, for almost 20 years.” Mr Noji said “I am extremely pleased to witness this next stage in the expansion of our partnership with Rio Tinto. Komatsu and Rio Tinto are global partners and have developed a strong alliance throughout the years.

pilbaraecho www.pilbaraecho.com.au

“We are confident that our leading-edge Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) technology will accelerate Rio Tinto’s Mine of the FutureTM objectives through improving safety and mine operations.” The deployment of the driverless truck fleet forms a key part of the Mine of the FutureTM program. Launched in 2008, the Mine of the FutureTM program creates next generation technologies for mining operations resulting in greater efficiency, lower production costs, and improved health, safety and environmental performance. Rio Tinto has been testing the Komatsu AHS, the world’s first commercial autonomous mining haulage system, in the Pilbara since December 2008. During the trials the AHS technology demonstrated benefits in health, safety and productivity.

Find our community champions The high achievers in the emergency services need to be rewarded and nominations are being sought. Now is the time to consider recognising the men and women who put themselves on the line to protect their local communities during emergencies. FESA is encouraging people to nominate individuals from the State’s high achieving emergency services for a 2012 fire and emergency services award. Chief Executive Officer Wayne Gregson said the awards recognise outstanding members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty during the past 12 months. “Emergency service volunteers and career personnel often push themselves to their limits in real life operational situations, from bushfires, severe storms and structure fires to daring ocean rescues,” Mr Gregson said. “These awards are an opportunity for us to recognise and acknowledge their exceptional achievements, hard work and dedication over

the past 12 months. “Nominations are important to ensure those achievers are flushed out and commended for the tremendous job they have done in helping to protect local WA communities.” Four awards for 2012 are now awaiting nominations. These are the Firefighting Awards (for both volunteer and career firefighters), State Emergency Service Awards, Volunteer Emergency and Fire Service Awards and Volunteer Marine Rescue Services Award. Members of the public can submit a nomination for an individual or a team, group, unit or brigade. The closing date for award nominations for all services is 5pm August 1, 2012. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the FESA website at www.fesa.wa.gov. au. For more information please contact 9323 9303 or email awards@fesa.wa.gov.au.

NEWS Briefs  PROTECTION FOR SEA LIFE It is a condition of the Chevron Project to protect the whales and coral in the Onslow area. More than $13million in environmental offsets generated by the Wheatstone liquefied natural gas project will be invested in protecting and researching the Pilbara’s marine and coastal environment. Environment Minister Bill Marmion said State Government conditions imposed on Chevron Australia’s $29billion project

near Onslow, which has approval to produce up to 25 million tonnes of LNG each year, included conditions to protect and research whales, turtles, dolphins and dugongs as well as seagrass, coral and mangroves. Mr Marmion said the offset agreements had been finalised and funds would be invested in a range of projects to address the residual environmental impact and risks to marine fauna and flora.

 COASTAL ACCESS WANTED With the development of mining, access to coastal areas and creeks has been restricted in some areas. The Ashburton Shire Council has told the Department of State Development (DSD) that it wants coastal access to Urala Creek. Land access for the public to Hooley Creek will be removed as a result of Chevron’s Wheatstone LNG plant development. DSD advised Council that it has secured agreement from Urala Station leaseholder (BHPB) to allow unfettered public access

across the station to Secret Creek as an alternative to Hooley Creek. Once this is achieved, Council will support the closure of vehicle access to Hooley Creek subject to the State and Chevron accepting all necessary establishment costs. They will also pursue modification of the Urala Pastoral Lease allowing community access from Secret Creek to Urala Creek. This will be undertaken as part of Government negotiations when the Urala Pastoral Lease is reviewed in 2015.

Excellence awards This year you will have a chance to select and reward your favourite business with a Service Excellence Award. Nominations are now open for the 2012 Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (KDCCI) Business Excellence Awards. The prestigious and coveted awards celebrate the achievements, innovation and enterprising spirit of small to medium sized businesses across the Shire of Roebourne. And for the first time in Business Excellence Awards history the KDCCI is inviting YOU to be the judge. This year the KDCCI will introduce a new awards category, the Peoples’ Choice – Service Excellence Award, giving you a chance to say ‘thankyou’ to a business that always goes above and beyond. It is also a great opportunity to acknowledge a business that delivers outstanding service and makes a positive contribution to the local economy. KDCCI Chief Executive Officer John Lally said anyone could nominate an eligible business or individual for any of the 16 award categories – from Best Home Based Business to Young Business Achiever. He said the Business Excellence Awards offered a unique chance for

local businesses to have their hard work, commitment and of course, successes, recognised. “The KDCCI Business Excellence Awards provide business and individuals with a range of business benefits, designed to add real value to their bottom line,” he said. “Through extensive promotion and publicity, award participants benefit from an increased public profile which rewards staff, generates new business and networking opportunities. “Entrants are also subject to a rigorous business examination, including a site visit, from a panel of independent and highly experienced judges to test operational processes and efficiencies.” Winners of the KDCCI Business Excellence Awards will also progress to the GWN7 Western Australian Regional Small Business Awards. In 2011, two Karratha businesses, Pilbara Site Pics and Portacrete SX5 Pty Ltd, took out top honours in their individual categories at WA Regional Small Business Awards. Nomination forms, including eligibility criteria, are available online at www.kdcci.asn.au, in person at Unit 3/24 De Grey Place Karratha or by emailing

By 24 weeks and six days she was three cm dilated. She said, “The midwives were fantastic at Nickol Bay Hospital, by orgainsing all of my stuff to send us to Perth. “I ended up having my daughter in King Eddies by c-section, as my daughter was trying to come feet first; she weighed 675g (1pound 6ounces),” she said. “We spent 12 weeks with the fantastic midwives in Perth.

Tips and Tricks

I couldn’t thank them enough for the amazing job they did.”

Whether it’s a new exercise or healthy eating program, consistency is the key. Eat at regular intervals throughout the day at the same time each day and your body and metabolism will adjust. Workout at the same time each day to increase your energy burn and get results. Take things one step at a time, figure out what you can change, change it, stick to it, then work on the next hurdle. Knock them off one by one, keeping your changes consistent and soon you’ll have a new healthy lifestyle that fits just as easy as your old bad habits.

If you have a story about a midwife you may like to tell, email

news@pilbaraecho.com.au

Help us keep Karratha tidy.

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time

Lucky Star Photo Booths & Photography

I’m a local Pilbara girl who arrived here five years ago weighing 120kg. I am a married mum with two kids and the same lifestyle that we all share up here, but now with lots of exercise and yummy healthy food, I am officially half that size; plus I had one of my babies in that time. I’m really excited to have joined the Pilbara Echo to share delicious meals and healthy tips that helped me along the way. I know that eating food that is good for you and tastes incredible, is the success strategy to any weight loss program and I’m testament to the fact that a little dedication can go a long way to realising a brand new lifestyle. Knowledge is definitely power and for those who are kitchen-phobic, changing your eating habits can be incredibly daunting. I believe in eating everything in moderation and enjoying every meal. I like to eat fresh, well made food that tastes great. I want the food I eat to be worth my time and effort so you’ll find my meals are fuss free, made with ingredients sourced locally and really tasty. I have dinner parties, treats with my kids, Sunday lunches and all the good things in life. I don’t miss out on anything, I just think carefully about what I eat and when.

TAX TIME AGAIN! Too busy working to get your tax done?

Into it’s third year running, the Pindan Dash was the event of the weekend, when the Wickham, Roebourne and Point Samson motocross club invited riders from all over the Pilbara to compete for the title. Set to be the favourite was two year winner Jono Squires, however after an accident, which will keep him off the track for a while yet, the race was on to see who would take out first. After some magnificent riding all year by Karratha rider, Robbo Lovett and taking out first on the day in Pro Lites, Lovett also held the gold and $2000 in the feature race, lapping a number of riders along the way. WRAPS president Barry Branch would like to thank everyone for their participation. “I’d like to personally thank our members and volunteers for all

the hard yards to put our Club in its current position, and make the Pindan Dash one of the biggest events in the Pilbara,” he said. “Of course, I can’t thank our sponsors enough, for without them, this event and the Club for that matter, would surely not exist. “Our Club motto has always been, ‘it’s for the kids’, so let’s get behind them and encourage that next champion out there.” The Pindan Dash sponsors include Concrete Logistics, Minprovise, WBHO Civil, Central Mining and Contracting, Civil Road and Rail, Lyons and Peirce, Kempe Engineering, PMG, Pilbara Access, Tidal Solutions, Norwest Sand and Gravel, Hydragate, Liftmec, Northwest Honda, Pilbara Boats and Bikes, Coates Hire, Karratha Panel and Paint, MG Kailis and PerthMX.

By Nigel Weston Starline Porsche was a most impressive and popular winner of The $20,000 Shire Of Roebourne Harding Cup (1400m) at The Nor West Jockey Club last Saturday. In front of a well attended Ladies Day crowd, the cheers were loud and clear for Starline Porsche, producing a local victory for Trainer, Martin Hughes. Punters stuck with the six year old mare after her impressive four length win at her last start, but it took all her class to secure victory from the very game, Trouble With Girls. Starline Porsche, beautifully ridden by Edward Creighton, settled in fourth place, behind the early leader Trouble With Girls. Around the home corner, Royal Capishe made a strong move, Starline Porsche was about two lengths behind and Trouble With Girls was going strongly in front. It took all of the home straight for Starline Porsche to grab victory right on the line from the very game, Trouble With Girls, while Carnarvon visitor, Royal Capishe was an impressive third placegetter. The cheers were still going strong at the trophy presentation with Nor West Jockey Club President, Evan Maloney, a happy winning owner of

Starline Porsche. It was a stellar day for Hughes, winning earlier in the day with Finley Point in The $8,000 Decmil Handicap (1600m). Parador dashed away at the 300 metre mark and looked a clear winner, but gradually Finley Point wore down the leader with Jockey, Creighton, judging his ride to perfection and gaining victory narrowly from Parador, with My Richard rocketing home for third. Leading Jockey, Jeffrey Berry, rode three winners on the day, but was desperately unlucky, also riding three very close second placings. Berry and Leading Trainer, Anne King, again dominated the day and Indamani was their shining light in The $15,000 Rio Tinto Handicap (1800m). Indamani was a convincing winner and is now the early favourite for The Roebourne Cup on July 28. The four-year-old has been most impressive working his way through the grades and he is handling the rise in class well; The Roebourne Cup will be his biggest test. Perth galloper, Greatwall Of China, now with Exmouth Trainer, Peter Dellar, ran home nicely for third and he’ll improve on his first run in the North West.

I’m Called Earl made it two wins in a row, winning The $12,000 Cool Change Sprint (1200m). Producing another whirlwind finish, I’m Called Earl emerged from the pack at the 200 metre mark and dashed away for another strong victory. Berry started the day well and caused a boilover with Mineralogy winning The $8,000 Citic Pacific Maiden (1400m). After missing the start by three lengths, things looked grim, but Berry showed his class lifting The Dean Cocivera trained four-year-old to victory, from Brilliant Sunshine and African Cat, who both should win soon. Visiting Trainers, Peter Daly and Peter Dellar were both rewarded with a win each on the day. Daly’s Dynamic Dane, ridden by young apprentice, Gracie Haines, led throughout to win The $10,000 Avis Handicap (1400m). Rivale Boy rattled home in the final 100 metres to grab victory from the jaws of defeat in The $8,500 API Handicap (1200m). The Ladies get another chance to dress up at Port Hedland’s Ladies Day meeting this Sunday, whilst The Nor West Jockey Club get ready for Roebourne Cup day on July 28.

The Nickol Bay Triathlon Club is hosting the first Pilbara Off Road Triathlon (P.O.R.T) at Millstream-Chichester National Park on October 2021. And as a lead up to the event, the club is holding a familiarisation/fun camping weekend at Millstream on July 28-29. The weekend will start with a short kids event (14 years an under) at 3pm on Saturday, October 20, then camp overnight, and the main event kicking off at 9am Sunday. The event will consist of a 600m swim in Deep Reach Gorge, 18km mountain bike ride and 4km trail run on October 21.

The weekend will then finish off with a BBQ lunch on the Sunday. Nickol Bay Triathlon Club president Stacey Holden said that this is not a technical course, but participants require a basic level of fitness to participate. “We are encouraging people from towns all over the Pilbara to take part as either individual or team entries,” she said. “The aim is to make this an annual event that can showcase the National Park whilst providing a fun weekend for members of the community. “We encourage local business to use this as a unique

team building opportunity too. “As lead up to the event in October we are inviting anyone interested in the event to join us for a familiarisation/ fun camping weekend on July 28-29 at Millstream. “We will need to know how many people/camp sites are required as well as their vehicle registration so we can advise the Rangers of how many people to expect.” Normal park entry/camping fee’s will apply. Anyone who wants to join us on July 28/29 should email their interest to our new email address nickolbaytriclub@ hotmail.com.

Some action shots from the weekend

Roosters upset the Hawks

Photos courtesy of Linda Rampant - eLaRz real pics

Competition leaders Hawks from Hedland took on third place Karratha Roosters at Millars Well oval on Saturday night, in round seven of the Pilbara Rugby League.

pilbaraecho www.pilbaraecho.com.au

The game started with Hawks taking charge of the first ten minutes having all the ball and making good use of it scoring first; Roosters fought back with some strong running by forward Josh Reid to lead at the end of the first half. With some strong words said at half time by both coaches, the second half started with some big hits and great defence by both teams. Holes started to appear around the play-theball area, letting Hawks make some good yards, but some great scrambling defence by Roosters stopped Hawks from scoring numerous times. Travel took its toll on the Hawks late in the second half and Roosters took advantage as captain David Wailu and Ed Williams made good metres from kicks and general play, to help seal the game and give Roosters a 46 - 16 win. The other game for the round saw another tough game between the Bronco’s and Storm at Bulgarra Oval. Storm started poorly by dropping the ball off the kick-off, which gifted the Bronco’s an early try. Storm hit back with two tries via fullback Chad

27

Nepia and centre Rawiri Thompson, to take a 12 to four lead. Both sides swapped tries for much of the first half and went into the break with Storm leading 24 to 16. Bronco’s came out firing in the second half - it took a spirited and stiff goal line defence from the Storm to hold them out - and ran out 36 to 30 winners. It was another close loss for the Broncos who seem unable to close out games but are not far off the rest of the competition. The game was full of big hits and great line running from both sides. Standout players for the game were the Bronco’s number six, Paulie Waiheke and for the Storm were halfback Tim Streat and hard hitting front rower Rawiri Hemi. Next week’s games will see the Storm travel to Port Hedland to face the Hawks, and the Roosters will host the Wickham Wasps at Millars Well playing for the Marty Kane Shield. The Wasps are yet to win a Marty Kane shield match since its inception three years ago, but are confident, given their recent form that this will be their year. Whichever way the result goes it promises to be a cracking game with both sides in form and likely to be playing on emotion.

WA NW bring the championship home By V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt The North West of WA has let the Australian Football community know that there is a huge talent pool north of Geraldton with three convincing victories and the Division three Premiership title. The Western Australian North West side was developed on the basis that no player living north of Meekatharra has represented WA in underage football and was piloted to see if there was a need for further programs in the North West, or if the talent could support an ongoing team; it would seem that there is. Seven Pilbara players including Hedland’s Warwick Wilson, Tyler Lindberg and Izzy Razalli, Newman’s Tom Hughes, Wickham’s Nelson Ansey and Karratha’s Anthony Dunn and Harrison Featonby distinguished themselves throughout the week in Sydney along with their Gascoyne and Kimberley team mates. The program also recognised quality administrators and coaches from the NW who were selected to travel with the team including Ritchie Patching and Kane Benson who played

instrumental roles in the smooth running of the program and the smooth running of the week. The results were mostly one sided as the well drilled, hard running and skilled side attacked the goal face and defended fiercely, a result of nearly seven months work. The program started way back in January; that saw a rag-tag group come together without an understanding of the demands of elite football. The education, social learning and skill development environment created a finely tuned and well drilled unit of fine young citizens. It captured the eye of the sports world and several players were identified by the Australian Institute of Sport to wear GPS units and AFL club scouts began to enquire about players. The focus now swings onto the North West Champs in Broome during October where the Gascoyne, Pilbara and Kimberley teams clash and talented players are inducted into the North West Program for 2013. This year’s team will look toward another Pilot program that may see them match themselves against a WAFL colts team here in the North West, as well as playing a game or two this year with their WAFL club.

Crawford Realty Karratha Presents...

A flute quartet from the West Australian Symphony Orchestra will visit the Pilbara in July. They will perform at free community concerts and schools as part of the WASO On the Road regional tour. Andrew Nicholson (Principal Flute), Eve Silver (Cello), Alex Brogan (Violin) and Shaun Lee-Chen (Violin) are the WASO quartet who will spend July 23 to 27 in the region, conducting music workshops at schools and performing for the community. The WASO quartet will perform a free, classical community concert in both Onslow and Karratha. The musicians will also give classroom presentations aimed at developing students’ interest in classical music and providing young people with the opportunity to listen, observe and try out the instruments. WASO Chief Executive Craig Whitehead said they received excellent community feedback from last year’s tour to the Pilbara and WASO is delighted to be returning. “WASO On the Road in the Pilbara is an exciting initiative because it enables the musicians to reach people in the regional areas of Western Australia,” he said. “The tour is part of WASO’s 2012 Education and Community program which demonstrates a commitment to sharing the joy of music to all West Australians. “I strongly encourage members of the public to come along to a free concert in either Onslow or Karratha and experience their state orchestra.”

event After an eventful day at the Ladies Day races, locals were invited to celebrate Karratha’s biggest club event and YOLO’s second beatdropping event, the ‘Ladies Day after party’ at the Tambrey Tavern last Saturday night. Together with local DJs Cam Myles, Hanky, Reckadon, Cooplex and Moltek, plus out of town special guest DJ Haydar, the dance floor was pumping with everyone’s favourite house, electro and party anthems. Since YOLO’s first event had such a huge response, out-doing it was going to be hard. But the boys brought down the house once again with the White Party, with more than 500 people rocking up. During the night, the line was so huge to get inside the Tambrey Function Room, when people wanted to go outside, they had to wait almost five minutes until there was a gap at the door to get through. Ladies were dressed to impress with a number of stand outs, including some people looking like they had been attacked with white spray paint, just so they could suit the theme. DJ Hanky said before the event that ‘if YOLO is not the best set up you’ve seen in Karratha, I will happily buy you a drink tonight!’ Thankfully, Hanky did not have to dip into his pocket to buy any drinks as the set up was amazing, with the guys spending thousands of dollars to make the night, a night to remember! Want to keep up to date with YOLO’s upcoming events that have the town talking for weeks after? It’s simple, just become a friend of YOLO by searching ‘Yolokarratha Tambrey’ on Facebook.
