Echo extends reach to Exmouth
theteam Alan
Head Honcho
The team at Pilbara Echo are pleased to announce that our regional newspaper will now be distributed every week to Exmouth. The decision was made this week after an agreement between Pilbara Echo and the Exmouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Originally only being distributed as far south as Onslow, Pilbara Echo manager Alan Richardson believes that Exmouth is a thriving area with a lot of news to share. “After spending several years on plantations in Carnarvon, some of my best memories are of weekends in Exmouth and the Ningaloo coast,” he said. “The welcome we have had from the Exmouth Chamber of Commerce and local businesses has been very positive. “I really am excited about this opportunity. “Exmouth and the Ningaloo Coast are definite hotspots to watch over the next few months and years.” In a recent feature article published in the Pilbara Echo, Graphic Designer Susanne Braithwaite gave a colourful description of Exmouth and its many attractions. “I was charmed by this friendly town and soon discovered there’s so many more reasons to venture to Exmouth: Cape Range National Park, picture-postcard Turquoise Bay, boutique shopping, resort accommodation and quality dining - it’s the perfect place to relax and take a break,” Susanne wrote.

A little bit of history returns Red Dog’s collar resurfaces
By Courtney Bertling It had been years since anyone had seen the original collar of Red Dog, last worn in 1979 and long thought that it was gone forever. However, just recently, it has been found in a safe at the Karratha Vet Hospital where it had been put away for safekeeping. Safe it was indeed; Dr Rick Fenny, who was the veterinarian who worked on Red Dog in the 70’s, thought it was long gone. When the collar was found, Dr Fenny described the feeling as though a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. “I was responsible for it and I thought I must have lost it, been stolen or disposed of,” he said. “It (the collar) means a lot, as it was the last tangible link to Red Dog and although simple, it represented what the community thought of him, that they would give him his identity and register him. “He always wore it.” When the collar was given back to Dr Fenny, one of the first calls he made was to Red Dog movie producer Nelson Woss, who had asked to see the collar years before hand. Mr Woss raced round to Dr Fenny’s house with star of the movie Koko, where the collar was then placed around Koko’s neck. When looking at Koko with the collar, Dr Fenny said it brought a tear to both his and Mr Woss’ eyes. “It was quite significant since he
(Koko) played Red Dog’s part and it was 33 years since it had been worn by any dog,” he said. It is no wonder the vision of seeing Koko wearing Red Dog’s collar brought a tear to Dr Fenny’s eyes, as well as being one of the many who knew him, Dr Fenny was recognised by Red Dog. “I looked after him from time to time, I was ultimately charged with his health and was with him at the end when I buried him,” he said. Dr Fenny has a lot of fond memories of Red Dog and is planning to share them all in his four book set named Red Dog Vet. “It describes my life and development from childhood to man, always with a red dog in the background,” he said. “In fact there was a red dog in each of four main eras in my life, from childhood, university, the Kimberley’s and the Pilbara.” “The ‘Red Dog’ will be book four and will be all about him and the Pilbara in the 70’s. “They all influenced me and my career and knowledge of dogs.” The books are a chronicle to Dr Fenny’s life, and the fourth one being to document the true story of Red Dog. “The Louis de Bernieres’ book was a work of fiction and the other books, though more factual, were too brief,” he mentioned about the other published Red Dog books. “There are more untold stories out there about him, more people who knew him who have never been given credit for it and more photos which
have never surfaced.” So, Dr Fenny is in search of the public’s photos of Red Dog and stories they have of him. “I only have a few photos and I would love the people who used to bring him to me, to contact me and remind me who they were, why and when they brought him in and what my reaction to him/them was,” he said. “Especially the two blokes who brought him to me in Roebourne late one night when it appeared he might have been poisoned. “Also the people who initially brought him to me in the old “Sea Ripple “ centre when I was first starting in Karratha and didn’t realise he was a community dog.” People can get in contact with Dr Fenny by calling 0408 939 061 or emailing rick@rickfennygroup.com.

The Pilbara Poet
by Elise Batchelor
Polish your tv screen, pull out your slippers and plump up those cushions. Oh yeah, it’s the O-lympics, and the biggest sport out there is held in the arena of the great couch potato. Bring. It. On!
Fielding excuses Excuses came from miles around And poured out every phone. With someone thinking, clever me, but hardly thunked alone. And bosses started tallying Employee protestations, For, after all, we do it well, This protestating nation. “I cannot come to work today, I’m err, cough splutter, sick.” Or, “Laryngitis, cannot speak,” Rasped out all tongue in cheek. “My Grandma’s here,” “My mother’s here.” “My children stole the car.” “I fell last night. “I’ve hurt my rear. “My bruising is a sight.”
spoke somewhat with a question mark, That breaking voice inflection. “My guinea pig, no, axolotl… fish, well, ah, it died. My son put it upon the stove; it accidentally fried.” I broke my leg, my finger, No, my knee, I mean my bone The one between my whatsit, ah.. My…oh, give up, stay home. And all the bosses of the world Cried, “Look, we get your drift.” And rather than berate them all And cause some greater rift, They grabbed the keys and flicked the lights And set auto reply “I’m stuck home watching tele. Contact me? Don’t even try!”
“I cannot reach the office for I Have a bad…infection,”
EAST PILBARA SHIRE UPDATE Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara
President’s Message
Closure of Old Tennis Courts
2012 is a very significant year for the Shire of East Pilbara because this year we acknowledge that the Shire is 40 years old. I have been living in the Shire of East Pilbara for several years and during this time I’ve seen this region change and progress is so many ways. That is why I think it’s important that we recognise that the Shire has reached a milestone birthday of 40 years. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to my fellow councillors for their continued commitment to the Shire as well as the hard working staff members who work diligently to serve our residents and community. Please take the time to read this latest news update which contains information about the latest news and events affecting the Shire and your community. Unsurprisingly we have been asked many questions about the parking fees that are soon to be implemented at Newman Airport and in this update we endeavour to answer the most frequently asked questions about how this will affect you. Newman Airport Parking – Frequently Asked Questions How do I get my free 14 days parking pass as I am a local? Residents of this Shire will be entitled to a concession card for use in the long term car parks at Newman Airport for no cost for up to 14 days per annum. Every household within the shire can apply for such a card. Will the parking concession pass be valid for one family or individuals? The system will allow for all families and individuals to obtain a card – provided they qualify for such a card. Cards can be obtained at the Shire Office in Newman. Will there be an e-tag system?

The new Capricorn playground in Newman is part of the Pilbara Cities $4.8 million sport facility upgrade grant. It is also partly funded by the Shire of East Pilbara and BHP Billiton Iron Ore. MFE C46681
E-tag systems are installed and operated by individual airlines. At this point in time none of them have given any indication that they intend introducing this in the near future. All that is available at this point in time is a Qantas Q-Card reader.
The Shire of East Pilbara recognises 40 years since it was established as a local Government after the amalgamation of the Shires of Marble Bar and Nullagine in 1972. Upon the amalgamation the Shire became the largest Shire in the world comprising an area of over 371,696 square kilometres. Please enjoy this photo of the stunning Marble Bar sunset.

Our newest citizens By Courtney Bertling Thirty-one people received their Australian Citizenship at the Shire of Roebourne Council Chambers last Friday, July 20. The Shire’s newest Australians were from Ireland, South Africa, India, the Philippines, Netherlands, New Zealand, Thailand and Zimbabwe. After taking the oath, all the new citizens received their certificate and a small gift. Shire of Roebourne president Fiona WhiteHartig said that hosting a citizenship ceremony makes you stop and think about how lucky we are to be Australian. “Australia is a place that people from all corners of the globe want to call home, she said. “Citizenship ceremonies have an important
symbolic role because they formally welcome our new citizens from many cultures into the Australian family. “Together, they make Australia an even better place to live and call home. One of the newest citizens, Jang Peck decided four years ago that she would apply for her Australian citizenship, after moving from Thailand in 2005. “I really took the time to read and study about Australia, she said. After the ceremony, Mrs Peck said

she was was proud of herself, as it was something she did all by herself. “It was my choice to study and take it seriously, she said. “It was tough and scaring going into the test, but it was all worth it. “Everyone is welcome in Australia, it’s a beautiful place to live in, I am so proud to say that I am an Australian. Each year, there are six citizenship ceremonies scheduled each year on Australia Day, in March, April and July, on
5
Australian Citizenship Day (September 17), and in December. Australian Citizenship Day, introduced in 2001, provides an opportunity for all Australians to celebrate and value Australian citizenship, the society we share and to reflect on the role we play in building and shaping our nation. The number of ceremonies held each year can change depending on the number of conferees received from the Department of Immigration.

Grunts, strains and sweats in Tug-O-War By Courtney Bertling This year will mark the 10th anniversary of FeNaClNG’s Tug-O-War with Lyons and Peirce being the standout every year! Since the beginning, Lyons and Peirce have been named champions with many wondering if anyone will stand up to Big Adz and his team and give a fighting competition. The Tug-O-War first evolved from an event Apex used to run called the ‘Iron man Challenge’, which was then utilized into the FeNaClNG theme by having competitors lug buckets of iron ore and bags of salt through a demanding obstacle course.
Apex member Gil McComb said this is usually done while heavily intoxicated and by no means in compliance with usual OH & S standards. “By all accounts it was a miracle no one was seriously injured or killed,” he laughed. “In time however, common sense gave way to the more gentlemanly and cultured pursuit of eight grown adults working in perfect harmony in an attempt to rip the arms off another group of eight like-minded competitors. “The event started out as an ‘on the day’ thing where APEX would just get the rope out and accept anyone who wanted to form a team on the spot.
“These days it has become a far more organised event with teams eagerly anticipating the day and their chance to claim glory. “It really is one of the highlights of the FeNaClNG weekend with teams even going to the trouble to form cheer squads and have team t-shirts printed for the athletes and their supporters alike.” So if you are in the mood for watching what Gil describes as a ‘well developed beer belly spilling from the top of a pair of jeans two sizes too small, while the owner grunts and strains and sweats in an all out attempt to defeat his foes’, then Tug-OWar is something that you do not want to miss!
Savings with your WA Seniors Card are everywhere.
“In truth though, the Tug-O-War is a great chance to experience real team spirit,” Gil said. “It is an event full of community spirit and usually has teams from local community groups and service groups like FESA and sometimes the local Police even field a team.” There are quite a number of rumours and un-confirmed reports floating around town, stating that the Lyons and Peirce title holders will be missing a few of their heavyweights and that bench press champion Nathan Baxter will be joining the team of the KIE Tuggers. For more information, adult teams can email Gil on gilmccomb@bigpond.com, and Apex is dealing directly with primary schools in the region for the junior competition.

Don’t forget to head down to one of the biggest events of the year, the FeNaClNG Festival down at Bulgarra Oval. On the Saturday, look forward to the annual float parade, with heaps of original ideas, colours and huge smiles. Last year, St Paul’s Primary School went a little crazy with their tornado float, reinterpreting the tornado’s that struck the centre of town in early 2011. Looking around, you will find different stalls selling unique items that you can only buy once a year at the festival. You’ll probably be stocking up on hand crafted jewellery, clothes and cute little knick-knacks, until next year when they all return again. At the main stage, there are so many performances to
keep the whole family entertained over the weekend; including performances from school choirs, dance companies, Fairy Queen Caroline for the little princess and many more. One event that always draws a crowd is the tug-of-war; let’s see if anyone can knock Lyons and Peirce off the pedestal of being crowned champions for the last eight years. To end the festival off with a bang as always is the crowd’s favourite, the Sunday night fireworks which is always bigger and better every year. Keep your eye out for Pilbara Echo journalist, Courtney Bertling, who will be taking photos over the two days. able to talk to people on a down to earth level. “It is also about informing the adults and children about different types of crime and prevention.” People were able to enjoy a sausage sizzle and take away goodie bags with balloons, stickers, pens and pamphlets on crime prevention and various other important messages.

Manager Bazz Harris said it is all about giving people the opportunity to take a little piece of Red Dog and the Pilbara away with them. “The mini figurine statue was a six month process,” he said. “We found an Australian Made souvenir company that could help us give people a little memento to take away. All products are ‘hot off the press’, only arriving at the centre two weeks ago. “The merchandise funding agreement with movie producer Nelson Woss was finalised in May,” Bazz said. “And since then, we have been compiling the products we wanted.” There is no reason not to get your hands on some Red Dog merchandise, with the centre teaming up with local Darren Phegan at FeNaClNG in a few weeks, to bring the merchandise to you. Darren Phegan will be taking the Red Dog bus, which he purchased off the movie set, down to the Bulgarra Oval for the festival, where the centre will sell the merchandise and for a gold coin donation, people can get a photo on the bus. The gold coin donation will then be donated to SAFE. The centre is also full steam ahead in other areas, including upgrading their website, so Red Dog merchandise will be able to be purchased online. “The centre is extremely busy, with more than 300 people through daily for July Bazz said. “We have been having some really positive customer feedback and comments with word spreading with travellers the centre is a great place for lots of information. The Resource Tour is in full swing, and it’s not just for tourists. “It is great for local or businesses to show new staff the role that Karratha plays,” Bazz said. The exhibition that is on at the moment, Come, Go, by locals Tanya Montogomery and Caroline Main has been well received by the public. “They have done a terrific job, with over 60 people attending the opening a couple of weeks ago,” Bazz said. “All the feedback about the artwork has been overwhelmingly positive”. “They have done so well, so well that there’s talk of booking them again next year.” The next exhibition at the centre will be the 20x20x20 exhibition, submitted by 20 locals, which symbolise the Pilbara.

• Paul Bray will be running a free workshop at the next Pilbara Writer’s Club meeting on Thursday, August 2
Free photography and Renewable energy industry boosted writing workshop • Horizon Power Senior Systems Technology Engineer David Edwards at the forum
More than one hundred renewable energy installers, developers and industry stakeholders attended a free forum in Perth last week to learn about the opportunities presented by the introduction of Horizon Power’s generation management specifications for renewable energy installations. The introduction of generation management on July 1, 2012 forms part of Horizon Power’s re-launched and improved renewable energy buyback product that now offers town-by-town pricing, clearer eligibility requirements and updated technical requirements. Horizon Power’s Manager Sales, Marketing and Product Development Scott Davis said the utility has introduced the generation management
standard to meet customer enthusiasm for installing renewable energy. Generation management will enable Horizon Power to control the variability of output from renewable energy sources, either by energy smoothing devices or through feed-in management. Mr Davis said that with this control, Horizon Power would be able to connect greater amounts of renewable energy to the electricity networks. “One of the challenges of managing renewable energy installations connected to our electricity systems is the impact of their intermittent nature on the security and reliability of power supply, but by including specifications for generation managed systems in our updated
technical requirements, we are confident we can overcome this. “Horizon Power is committed to renewable energy and we are eager for the renewable energy industry to develop a product that overcomes the challenges of installing renewable energy on isolated networks. “This will ultimately give customers more options about the size of systems they are able to install and enable us to accept more renewable energy in towns where hosting capacity has already been reached,” he said. A number of renewable energy suppliers have indicated they will have generation-managed systems available to customers shortly.
The Pilbara Writer’s Club has some amazing plans coming up over the next few months, including a free workshop being held this Thursday, August 2 at the Karratha Arts and Learning Centre. The club has invited Paul Bray to lead the workshop, who has travelled to the Pilbara as the new ABC Open Producer. Mr Bray is keen to work with local photographers, video makers, artists, writers, poets, thinkers and creators on a wonderful multimedia project, called ABC Open. “ABC Open is the big, new, community outreach wing of the ABC and as part of this I run workshops and teach people photography, video and storytelling skills so they can get their own stories onto the ABC,” Mr Bray said. “And it’s not news or journalism, the stories are more personal and creative; it’s about people’s real lives, so more like documentary.
“We have Flickr groups, a dedicated ABC Open website, Vimeo channels and slots on ABC News 24, ABC Radio and iview making this project a very powerful way to share contributors’ work with a large and diverse audience both across Australia and Internationally.” The ABC Open Photography theme for August is ‘a faceless portrait’ and Mr Bray is asking people attending the workshop to bring along a memory stick of photos. “It would be absolutely wonderful to kick things off with a few photos and I think this is going to be a really interesting theme with submissions from across the country,” he said. The free workshop will be held at the next Pilbara Writer’s Club meeting on Thursday, August 2 at the Karratha Arts and Learning Centre between 7-9pm. Local artist Chamber launches shortlisted for award Local artist Allery Sandy, loves to paint the Pilbara and her painting “Country in Spring” has been praised. Allery, from the Mingullatharndo Community near Roebourne, has been announced as a finalist in the 29th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award (Telstra Art Award). Allery created her work using sponge and brush techniques and a fine layer of dot work, creating a sense of movement and depth of field on the canvas. This work represents the landscape of her country from an aerial perspective. “My painting represents the Pilbara country in the spring,” Allery said. “This country was my Father and Grandfathers land and I enjoy painting bush seeds and the creeks, rivers, trees and wildflowers when they are in season.” Allery’s work regularly exhibits in private galleries in Fremantle and Sydney, has won a number of prizes and is represented in public and private collections. The new Telstra Art Award Coordinator and Curator of Indigenous Art and Material Culture at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT), John Waight, will oversee this year’s award and has praised the artists shortlisted for the high quality artworks across a range of media. “The Telstra Art Award is a great opportunity for Indigenous Australians to express and celebrate their culture, beliefs and society,” Mr Waight said. “This year’s selection is a strong representation of contemporary Indigenous art from around the nation.” Local Telstra Country Wide Area General Manager WA North, Tony Carmichael added that it is positive
study into service jobs
With the growth of Karratha into a city, thousands of new jobs in service industries will be needed. More than 5000 new service employees will be needed to support local business, industry and enterprise as Karratha grows into a major regional city with more than 50,000, a new study has revealed. The Business Map Gap and Supply Chain Study, undertaken by one of Australia’s leading economic consultants ACIL Tasman, explored economic diversification options across the West Pilbara. An initiative of the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KDCCI), the study was developed in partnership with the WA Government, through Pilbara Cities, the Pilbara Development Commission and the Shire of Roebourne. The study includes the towns of Karratha, Dampier, Wickham, Onslow, Roebourne and Point Samson and will help reduce
• Allery Sandy is one of the finalists for the 2012 Telstra Art Award to see fresh works by indigenous artists from WA recognised on a national scale. “The Telstra Art Award is the first and longest running Indigenous art award in Australia and provides a unique national platform for Indigenous artists to showcase their talent,” Mr Carmichael said. The Telstra Art Award is comprised of the major $40,000 Telstra Award and $4,000 individual category prizes including the Telstra General Painting Award; Telstra Bark Painting Award; Telstra Work on Paper Award; Wandjuk Marika Memorial 3D Award (also sponsored by Telstra); and the Telstra New Media Award. The 29th National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award exhibition opens, and award presentations will be made, on Friday, August 10, 2012.
the region’s reliance on the resources industry. It identified ways to build a strong, sustainable local economy that supports regional growth and development. KDCCI Chief Executive Officer, John Lally, said small to medium sized businesses would become important economic drivers over the next decade. “To support the forecasted population growth across the Pilbara region we need to create thousands of new jobs - in Karratha alone 25,000 new jobs will be needed by 2030 - the only way to achieve this is to diversify our economy,” he said. “More than ever the focus will be on growth in small to medium sized businesses including those in the retail, service, tourism and hospitality sectors.” The study highlighted opportunities for new industry including downstream processing, tourism, agriculture/ aquaculture, R&D-based education, marine services,
a new defence base, solar power research/ commercialisation, district cooling, transport and logistics and desert/remote housing construction. It also identified three major strategic growth paths including tourism/recreation services; transport, logistics and marine services and new industry bases as well as options for economic diversification such as growing the region’s local service industry; responding to the resources and energy sectors supply chain demands including warehousing, supply to mining camps, transport/couriering and recreational services and the development of new industries. The survey also addressed some of the region’s key issues and challenges including the availability of affordable land and housing. Cossack Art Awards Last weekend saw intriguing, colourful and captivating art pieces on display for the 20th anniversary of the Cossack Art Awards. On Friday, July 24, sponsors of the awards were invited to a special evening to view the art pieces before the awards were presented on the Saturday night, July 25. On the Sunday, July 26, the exhibition opened to the public with a community family fun day with market stalls, live entertainment and fun for the family. Since the first event, the Cossack Art Award has become Australia’s richest regional art award and has received national recognition. Over the years, the award has attracted young and established artists alike to take part in this amazing event; the award attracted 309 submissions last year alone.
Each year, the number of categories and prize money has increased, with artists such as Stuart Elliot, Clifton Mack, Jane Martin, Wendy Darby and Roslyn Nolen among many others taking major prizes for outstanding work. As an acquisitive award, the Shire has a valuable collection of Australian artworks to be proud of; one that reflects changing trends, themes, social climates and Australian culture over the past 20 years. With nine categories and a total prize pool of $109,000 the awards night was a huge success. The Cossack Art Award exhibition will run daily from 10am to 3pm until Sunday, August 12. Regurgitator’s debut studio album, Tu-Pland, earned the band a significant following, before the release of their second album, Unit in 1997, propelled the band into mainstream success, winning the ARIA Award for Best Album of 1998 and going platinum three times.
“Our first album had a lot of heavy guitars, so when we recorded our second album, we did it so differently and we never expected it to go three times platinum,” Ben said. “All of our albums have been very different, but I think last year’s SuperHappyFunTimesFriends was our best. Bending and blending with Short and Curly When the roots music duo Short and Curly play in Port Hedland and Karratha in the next few weeks, they’ll be living out the next episode in a dream they barely dared to have. Steve ‘Short’ Packer (vocals, harmonica) and Karen ‘Curly’ Hunt (vocals, guitar) moved from Sydney to Bridgetown, in the south-west corner of WA, five years ago. Having both been journalists for many years, they were looking for a major change in lifestyle, with a vague ambition to switch from often writing about other people’s music to making some themselves. “We knew Bridgetown had a lively roots music scene, including its blues festival every November, and we hoped to tap into that,” says Packer. Before long, they were performing songs by the likes of Paul Kelly and Linda Ronstadt at pub jams, and getting a good response. “Then we wrote our first song, called Camel Train, and nervously slipped it into our set. “The next time we showed up, someone shouted ‘play the camel song’. “It was the best request we’ll ever get,” says Packer. Since then, they’ve written many songs and

Check out Short and Curly in Port Hedland and Karratha recorded 11 of them for their first CD, Where Our Paths Cross. They’ve also become a popular live act in the south-west, playing at pubs, breweries, festivals, agricultural show days, benefits, and parties on the verandah of their big old jarrah house on a hill overlooking Bridgetown. The house is very important to them. “It’s a bit run down and surrounded by huge gum trees and friendly neighbours. “It’s a ‘blues house’, which oozes inspiration to make our kind of music,” says Packer. Short and Curly describe themselves as country/blues/folk, but they blend and bend those categories. Their now extensive repertoire includes songs by Michelle Shocked, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Sam Cooke, Memphis Minnie and the Stray Cats, plus some unlikely oddities such as If I Only Had a Brain, from The Wizard of Oz. movie review Here the Snow White myth has been roused, rejuvenated and reinvented into a dark and gothic fueled tale more Brothers Grimm than Disney.
event
The Pilbara Joblink team with celebrity guest speaker Ernie Dingo
Snow White and the Huntsman Ernie Dingo inspires by MIRANDA CASHIN At the hands of English director Rupert Sanders, Snow White is a visual extravaganza with effects that are simply stunning. Knights shatter into thousands of pieces, the Dark Forest is a carpet of dead birds, dark shadows and screeching demons, while the fairy garden is a moss covered paradise where flowers erupt into butterflies and fairies emerge from the breasts of birds. There are almost hints of Namoi Wolf’s seminal feminist work, The Beauty Myth, throughout the film particularly in Charlize Theron’s portrayal of Ravenna, the evil queen who
banishes her stepdaughter and later plans to eat her heart. But it is not pure evilness that drives her, but rather fear; fear of aging and losing her beauty, which has been her power and means of survival in a world dominated by men. Theron is magnificent as the evil queen who is a ball of cold fury, hell bent on a warped mission with complete disregard for those that get in her way. Theron gives a brilliantly layered performance that is mad and manipulative but infused with almost a sense of child-like vulnerability. It’s absorbingly creepy, coldly calculated and boldly brilliant. While Theron owns each scene, Kristen Stewart’s Snow
White gives a far more passive performance. It’s hard to tell if it is the script itself or her performance that lets her down, but she doesn’t quite have the chops to carry off the feisty yet feminine hero with her sulky demeanor far too reminiscent of her Twilight days. While the film is stunning and the effects breathtaking, where it crumbles is in its lack of good old-fashioned storytelling. The plot is a little limp and the characters a little underdeveloped. But despite its flaws, the film’s strong visual impact pulls it over the line and by sequel bait dangling in the ending; it’s likely we haven’t seen the last of Snow White yet.
To watch this movie, head down to the Woodside Moonrise Cinema on Friday, August 3 at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased at www.roebourne.wa.gov.au/wmc
Karratha Airport Temporary Traffic Diversions Saturday 28 July
at luncheon The Pilbara’s major employers and key stakeholders were treated to a mid-winter Christmas luncheon at The Youth Shed, on Wednesday.
Well-known celebrity Ernie Dingo donated his time to the luncheon and he dazzled the audience with his perspective, personal stories and shared a bit of himself with them all. Pilbara Joblink held the outbackthemed event to promote their Bridges program. Bridges is an Indigenous Employment Pathway that supports both Employers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. It is funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. The key stakeholders were invited to learn more about Bridges, and develop a partnership with Pilbara Joblink. The luncheon also offered them the opportunity to create business opportunities with other invitees and, over the lunch and dessert all lovingly prepared by the Pilbara Joblink crew, the table’s occupants dined, chatted and networked. The outback theme featured strongly throughout the luncheon from the table decorations of rustic lanterns and jars full of iron-ore rich red sand, to the beautiful outdoor photography by Erin Hardy presented around the room (well represented also on the invitations, menu, name tags and displayed on the projector), bush tucker herbs on the menu and the paintings done by local prisoners
which were also on display. Ernie Dingo spoke at length to the gathered key employers in the Pilbara region; his talk was founded on the notion of inspiring indigenous employment. His informative and humorous tone went down very well with the crowd, as laughter often resonated around the room, and the interactive section of his talk was popular, with many questions posed. Throughout his speech, Mr Dingo used his personal history and life story to relate to the group of employers, and interspersed his speech with his own experiences in the workforce. Very appreciative of all the major sponsors was Pilbara Joblink’s Kelly Strange, who said, “they really came to the party”. Sponsors included North-West Express Butcher, Coles, Lenard’s, Wrapped Creations and Mezzy’s Pizza. Fantastic prizes were provided by Icon (restaurant voucher), Erin Hardy (studio photography session) and Life and Soul Gym (one-month free membership). The 55 guests received complimentary gift bags stuffed full of goodies; in particular, the Pilbara Joblink pen, which doubled as a USB stick impressed, as it drew murmurs of appreciation from the crowd. The sentiment of the mid-winter Christmas luncheon was summed up neatly by Mr Dingo, when asked which one thing he would change in our society, he said, “give kids a proper start”.

Two minor traffic diversions are planned for Karratha Airport this weekend as upgrade works continue. 1. Bayly Avenue and Goddard Street intersection Minor traffic diversion in place for eight hours from 9am. Entry to the short term and long term parking areas will not be affected. 2. Long term car park B Will be temporarily closed for eight hours from 7am. Traffic management personnel will direct traffic to long term car park A. An alternative route has been identified for vehicles wishing to exit long term car park B. It is programmed that all works will be completed on Saturday 28 July. The Shire of Roebourne is working closely with project contractors to ensure minimal disruption is caused to motorists. The works being undertaken are part of a $20 million project currently underway to upgrade power and hydraulics at the Airport, funded by the Shire of Roebourne.

The angel of cuisine Thanks everyone for the great response to my feature last week. I wanted to talk a little this week about reality. For those of us who are mums, it was back to school this week and that means more changes in the routines that we only just figured out for the last few weeks. That’s life though; it is ever changing and if you want to succeed with your new healthy lifestyle then you need to change with it. Keeping things consistent doesn’t mean doing the same thing day in, day out, it means doing something day in, day out. It is not uncommon to see me running up and down the stairs at the Rec Centre with my baby in the pram and my 6 year old on a bike parked firmly at the bottom. I don’t always get my own time to workout; it’s not a perfect world. I’m not a special case with a custom fitness plan, a trainer and hours to myself everyday. I am a real person, who figures something out every single day.
Even if its half of what I did the day before, its still 50% more than nothing. We have such great weather at the moment and so many options for fitness all around us. If you can’t get to the gym, go for a walk when you drop the kids at school - ask around and find another mum to walk with you. You’ll be surprised when you start talking fitness just how many people want to do something, but don’t want to do it alone.

A healthy, much tastier alternative to deep fried or oven baked chips, these are so easy to make and guilt free. The Olive Oil gives them an incredibly rich flavour and the spices make them so delicious there is no need for salt.
If you work all day, hit the ovals or beaches after work and run, walk, do star jumps, push ups, stairs, anything. As long as you are out there, you are doing something positive and positive steps lead to positive outcomes. I hope to see you out and about, have a healthy week!! Feel free to email me at angelofcuisine@iinet.net.au with any questions and check out lots more recipes and inspirational ideas on my Facebook page

Peel potatoes and boil in water until a fork moves through them easily without being mushy, this should take 10 minutes or so. Remove from water and place on cutting board. Allow to cool a little and then slice each one into four equal pieces. Toss pieces gently in Olive Oil and spices. Place spaced apart on a baking tray lined with Baking Paper. Roast slowly in a 150 degree fan forced oven until golden brown.

Even salads can be fattening if they are full of too much of certain ingredients. Chop up nuts, cheese, avocado and lean meats as small as possible when adding to salads to avoid a high calorie count. The smaller the pieces the more spread throughout the meal they will be, which means you get the taste and flavours you want with every single bite. A piece of cheese is so easy to eat before you even realise, but a pile of grated cheese takes a lot longer. Next time you are making a salad, think about everything you are putting into it, take half back to the fridge and chop the remaining half as small as possible and you’ll find you’ve made one small change that will make a big difference.

The winner of the Karratha challenge went to Gavin Stein who lost 18.5kgs, winning himself a $1000 voucher from Cool Change. “From a trainers point of view, it is very satisfying to see people really dedicate themselves to correct eating and consistent exercise,” Cindy said. “There are so many that want to achieve a healthier lifestyle, lose weight or get fitter, but are not prepared to put the work in. “The people who really achieved on the Challenge put in an enormous effort with their nutrition and training.” Behind Gavin, was Life and Soul’s very own Peter Athanitis, who lost 14.5kgs. Runner-up was Melissa Aldridge, losing 10kgs, followed by Lena Goimil with
• Gavin Stein (winner) who lost 18.5kgs and Peter Athanitis who lost 14.5kgs an 8.6kg loss, and third prize went to Trish Callaghan who lost 6.8kgs. Cindy said the awards night was to congratulate and celebrate the achievers, participants and trainers. “Without the participants, we would not have had such a fantastic challenge and without the trainers we would not have had such great results,” she said. “The challenges that are held at Life and Soul are fun, rewarding and achievable.” The Personal Trainers at Life and Soul play a huge part in all Challenges, designing the workouts, providing nutritional advice and meal plans and giving each participant constant support.
Get into the Olympic spirit And with the Olympics starting today, Life and Soul are holding their own Olympic Challenge, and it only costs a gold coin donation, which will go towards the Paralympians. “With the Olympics starting, it was a natural idea to hold some sort of Challenge for our members - and to raise money for the Paralympians is a no brainer,” Cindy said. “They are simply inspirational above any type of athlete that will be competing at the Games - and unfortunately we do not hear enough about them and their achievements. “So come down to Life and
Soul and participate in our Challenges!” Also, there is currently a new Olympian membership on offer for 12 months with unbelievable savings. Non-members are more than welcome, the more the merrier. All of the instructors and personal trainers are excited and revved up about getting as many people as they can into these challenges and above all else, it will be fun and very rewarding! Connecting Pilbara kids to football By Julie Glover V Swans Pilbara Talent Academy visited Tom Price in July as part of the pilot program to connect Pilbara kids to development football and promote community engagement. The V-Swans Academy started in the Pilbara in March 2012 with the aim being to provide football education, create opportunities for talented players and encourage community participation. Roebourne V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt said development football in the Pilbara means young players get access to programs that are available in the metro area, but are not obtainable for those residing in isolated regions because of geography and distances to travel. “We’ve formed an academy which is essentially a life education program where the focus or connector is football,” he said. “The program has a range of outcomes including football education and building life skills through social development and community engagement.” The program is multifaceted, including a mentoring initiative, and designed to encourage all participants to be the best they possibly can. It also provides talented players with a chance to take their game to the next level which begins with local and Pilbara representation and continues through to the Swans WAFL colts. “Our success is measured by the kids who contribute to the community through umpiring, playing and coaching,” he said. While in Tom Price, V-Swan academy participants aged 14 – 17yrs ran a football holiday clinic for the local children at the Tom Price High School. Thirty seven boys and girls between the ages of five and 14 years enjoyed a variety of drills, games and footy fun. The V Swans Talent program currently includes 98 young men across the Pilbara including Tom Price, Port and South Hedland, Newman, Onlsow, Karratha, Roebourne, Dampier, Wickham and Karratha. “Of the 98 kids in the academy, all play football locally, 25 coach in their local areas, 32 umpire junior, 12 have played colts for Swan Districts and seven kids have represented their state in the WA North West team at the National 16’s AFL championships in Sydney July, 2012,” Clint said. V Swan development staff will select the best players from all three teams (Shire of Ashburton and Newman combined, Roebourne

Junior Soprano produced an exciting finish to win The $10,000 Goodline Handicap (2050m) at The Port Hedland Turf Club Ladies Day Meeting last Sunday. A good crowd hovering around 1,000 people were impressed with Junior Soprano’s win, which saw the five-yearold come from last at the 600 metre mark to win easily. In the home straight, many horses looked a winning chance, including Racso and Stormish, but they all had no answer to the strong finish of Junior Soprano. Trainer, Ray Malpass now has The Port Hedland Cup firmly in his sights and a repeat performance will put Junior Soprano right in the finish. Leading Jockey, Jeffrey Berry continued his winning run. riding a double, onboard Prince Bellagio and Wallyworld.

Prince Bellagio led throughout to win The $8,250 Bear & Rabbit Handicap (1200m), ensuring the stranglehold Anne King has on The Caltex Australia Trainer of The Year Award. Wallyworld ran up to his ability by winning The $8,000 QSD Works Handicap (1600m). Kept safe in the betting, he came with a great finish in the final 200 metres to rundown Whalah, who looked the winner. Tenpin continued his love affair with the Port Hedland track, winning The $10,000 Ceacon Handicap(1300m). In a race of tactics in the small field, Tenpin was always in contention and jockey, Danny Miller, kicked the nineyear-old clear at the top of the straight. He then held off the expected challenge from I’m Called Earl, but Tenpin was never going to
lose and maintained his great record at Port Hedland. He now has five wins and four placings from his nine starts at The Port track. Visiting Broome trainer, Tom Pike and jockey, Colin Haddon, made the trip worthwhile when Carooned took out The $8,800 Urban Sole Handicap (1400m). Runaway Leader, Princess Deidre established a seven length lead early in the race. However, Carooned got within three lengths near the home corner and in the straight it was a great battle, with Carooned getting there on the post. Hotsing ran home well to win The $7,250 Centurion Transport Maiden (1200m), favorite Brynbella looked the winner at the 200 metre mark, but Hotsing flew in the final stages to grab victory. It’s now time for ‘The Cup’s’; Roebourne Cup is on this Saturday, while Port Hedland Cup is on Monday, August 6.

The Port Hedland Hawks and Wickham Wasps look set for a final round showdown in the Pilbara Rugby League competition after all but securing the top two spots on the ladder with wins over the Storm and Roosters at the weekend. Storm took a strong contingent of both players and supporters to Hedland for their first trip up and Hawks also had a full bench. Hawks hooker and halves combination of Dan Payne, Nathan Chaplin and Nathan Payne got the Hawks off to a good start making some darting dummy half runs to get them on the front foot and controlled the play. Storm played a physical game in the forwards and were backed up well by their outside backs. Due to some strong defence by Storm, Hawks went to the air with kicks coming down close to the try line. This paid dividends bringing two tries. Hawks had a comfortable lead at half time but the Storm didn’t give in grinding out two, second half tries. But it was the Hawks who controlled most of the game a came out on top 36 – 14 showing why they are on top of the ladder. The Wasps travelled to Karratha trying to secure their first Marty Kane Shield win since its inception in 2009. Both teams were missing some experienced players in key positions but still fielded strong sides. After 10 minutes of solid defence from both sides, it was the Roosters who struck the first blow when they threw the ball wide to their big centre, who stepped through the Wasps backline defence, scoring.
The Roosters seemed to have the advantage out wide and soon crossed over again in the corner giving them a handy early lead. After a number of attacking raids the Wasps finally crossed the try line when Aorangi Stokes received an inside ball running into a big gap and scoring untouched under the posts. Handling errors from the Wasps and some quality play from the Roosters saw them cross the try line twice more and went into the break with an eight-point lead and high in confidence. The Wasps came out strong in the second half but it was the Roosters who put first points on with another try. The Roosters look set to dominate the rest of game but the Wasps never say die attitude came to the fore and they managed to claw their way back into the game with tries from Willie Live and Duane Evans. Roosters didn’t give in easily, but when what looked to be a certain try to Jason Ware was disallowed, the momentum shifted to the Wasps. With 15 minutes remaining Wasps captain Junior Tuliau went down with a season ending knee injury with the Wasps just two points behind at 20-18. Wasps seemed to lift for their injured captain. When Mikolaj Cherrington got on the end of 30 metre break and chip kicked ahead to regather and score an impressive individual try, Wasps found themselves in front for the first time in the match with less the 10 minutes remaining. Wasps controlled the final minutes scoring again and taking the Marty Kane shield with an impressive 30-20 win.

Inclusive Holiday Program – one year on Record numbers appeared at the Inclusive School Holiday Program over the holiday break, as the program celebrates one year of connecting the community in Karratha. Run every holidays since July 2011, the Inclusive School Holiday Program is a multisport initiative that offers members of the community an opportunity to engage in a range of sports offered by local Karratha sporting clubs. At its inception, there were only a handful of participants and a few sporting clubs, however it has now progressed to include a great number of sporting organisations and over 150 participants per program. Raelene Gill, from the Shire of Roebourne, has embraced the changes that have resulted from this program. “Karratha is certainly a different place now to what it was a year ago. “All members thoroughly look forward to this program and the legacy of this program lives on through the school termnot just while it is running in the holiday periods”. The program aims to be inclusive – to connect people of all abilities with sports and to close the physical and social distances separating people, to bring everyone together as a community. “This program enables everyone to participate together as a whole community, it also educates people and gives them an understanding that we are all different in some ways, but ultimately we all want to feel connected and be part of a welcoming and understanding community,” said Kerry Hamilton, Community Living Association. Following the program all participants are encouraged to then integrate into the local sporting clubs should they wish to do so.

echosport sport By Courtney Bertling Ever think that stress in life is bringing you down? Then do what Douglas Knowles has been doing for the past couple of years, and ride around the country. Back in 1995, Douglas’ life came crashing down. “My marriage, business and health fell apart, everything just went wrong,” he said. “The doctors told me that if I didn’t get rid of the stress in my life, then I wouldn’t live past six months. “So I decided to get rid of my stress and live my youth again, not worry about a thing.” Douglas referred to Pslams 103:5, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. “It is saying to live your youth in your senior years,” he said. This is the fourth time Douglas has taken to the road to re-live his youth, and although in his 70s, he believes he is fitter than ever. Starting in Geraldton on July 14, Douglas arrived in Karratha on Saturday, July 21, before heading off again on the remainder of the 20,000km trip, before flying to Europe for more of the same. “I hate the idea, that when we retire, our life has finished,” he said. “There is another life after retirement and it is better!” Travelling around the country, Douglas realised how expensive travelling can be, especially for a pensioner. “My idea is to create rest stops

along the coast line every 100kms or so, that are maintained with a care taker, so pensioners can travel, without the fret of getting sick along the way,” he said. “They will be able to stop over with no cost, travel this great country and not have to spend an arm and a leg in doing so.” Douglas believes that anything is possible, if you believe. “If you can believe, then you can achieve,” he said. Along the gruelling trip, Douglas has learned how much healthier he has become. “When I was riding into Exmouth, the wind was against me and it was so difficult,” he said. “I kept riding for 15kms when I stopped to see if something was wrong. “I found out that my 40kg trailer that I had been pulling, the bearings had heated up and weren’t moving. “So I had been pulling 40kg of dead weight. “At my age, that should have worn me out and I should have been showing some types of frail.” Along with his bike and trailer, Douglas also has his newly published book with him called, ‘60 going 60 more’. “Instead of going into an old home, I’m travelling and teaching people not to give up after retirement,” he said. “I still have another 50 years ahead of me. “I am a completely different person, compared to when I was told I only had six months to live. “I am going to live until I am 120-years-old.”

Speedway for the firies By Chantelle Dalgarno Last Saturday night, Nickol Bay Speedway held the second of its five Club Meets (also known as Points Meets) for 2012; dedicating the night to the emergency services in the Pilbara, with a fire display during intermission and plenty of incidents on the track to keep the volunteers from Karratha St. Johns Ambulance Service, on their toes. Karratha Smash Repairs and Nickol Bay Speedway donated a Holden Commodore and the infield of the race track to the Karratha Volunteer Fire Brigade; allowing them to show the 700-plus strong crowd exactly how well they handle an all too common occurrence here in the northwest. Once set up, it took only minutes for the car to become completely engulfed in flames; but only half the time for these
dedicated volunteers to wrestle control back – quickly proving their training and skills. During the display, racing drivers (along with the Chief Steward), did a lap of the crowd to collect contributions, resulting in the respectable sum of $1045.10! This money, along with a donation by Nickol Bay Speedway, will be presented to the Karratha and Dampier Volunteer Fire Brigades during Intermission on the second night of the Club’s JNK Express FeNaClNG Race Meet (Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4). While the Officials are staying quiet on the points awarded to the drivers for the night (these are tallied throughout the season and announced in November); we can tell you that the clear winner for the Street-stocks races on the night wasn’t a local driver.
Winning two out of three heats, Car #28, driven by Tim Coxall of Albany, is currently touring the tracks here in the Pilbara to test track surfaces to prepare for next year’s Street-stock State Title (May/June – Port Hedland) and Street-stock Muster (weekend following State Title – Nickol Bay Speedway). Next weekend will see plenty more travelling drivers from around the state take to the clay at Nickol Bay Speedway as the JNK Express FeNaClNG Race Meet gets underway. At the time of going to print over 20 drivers from Albany, Perth, Kalgoorlie, Boulder, Geraldton, Shark Bay, Carnarvon, Newman and Broome had already nominated (along with 40-plus drivers and riders from Karratha and Port Hedland). With nominations closing this weekend, and racing drivers notorious for leaving things until the last minute; the Club is estimating a turnout of over 70 to 80 racers across ten classes including four Sprintcar divisions, Street-stocks, Prods, Mods, Supers, Sidecars and Juniors. Gates open 6pm - Racing starts 7pm. Adults are $20 each for one night or $30ea for a two-night pass. Kids are $5 each per night. Weekend pass for family is $75. Strictly NO BYO alcohol - canteen and bar facilities available at the track.
