Rio Tinto general manager Greater Tom Price operations Sinead Kaufman said Rio Tinto had a long and proud history of supporting the Polly Farmer Foundation. “It was a privilege to be part of the signing event which commits everyone to this programme,” she said. “More importantly the Polly Farmer Foundation has resulted in positive career outcomes for many students who otherwise may not have had the same opportunities to excel in their chosen fields.” Rio Tinto recently funded the refurbishment of the Tom Price Enrichment Centre, which is situated close to the high school and offers a range of facilities such as computers, internet and tutors to assist students.

I decided to organise myself this year with a summer wardrobe and a winter one. Hence, I have worn knee high boots on each day (all three of them) when the temperature has seemed a tad cool…ish. In the meantime, having organised myself as such, I have come to the realisation I will never do that again. Makes for too much sweaty labour.
Hibernation Took a week to sort it. Another, chucking out. A further two remorseful, But still, too late for doubt.

It took 10 days to itemise And colour code and fold: A pile for all the newer stuff A pile for stuff that’s old. Did I need six of that one? Or four of all those there. And what about that fancy one – But does it match my hair? I found a bucket big enough And then it snapped in half. I packed again, I modified And really had to laugh. Oh sure, mum did it every year, But that was her in Melbourne. Up here to pack your summer stuff Is something done quite seldom. Yet pack I did, quote Confucius, “Get no new knickers knotted” Or some such rhyme on settled minds, But my mind had forgotted

Tenix named alliance partner for Pilbara wastewater upgrades The Water Corporation has today announced that it has formed an Alliance with Tenix to deliver wastewater upgrade works in Karratha, Port and South Hedland. Water Corporation Regional Business Manager Peter McAllister said the Alliance would begin work on-the-ground
next month and the upgrades would be completed by mid-2014. “Major water and wastewater upgrades are needed to cater for growth and further residential and commercial development in the Pilbara,” Mr McAllister said. “The Alliance will upgrade wastewater treatment plants located in Karratha and
South Hedland to more than double the capacity of the schemes currently serving these two towns.” Mr McAllister said new recycling plants would also be built in Karratha and South Hedland to treat up to six million litres of wastewater per day. “The major benefit of greater
wastewater re-use will be less reliance on the towns’ drinking water schemes to irrigate ovals, road verges and golf courses,” Mr McAllister said. Mr McAllister said Tenix was chosen due to its previous experience in delivering wastewater assets in the south west of Western Australia.

4.22pm Pilbara, WA. Mirandah Pickering is loading a ship with 175,000 tonnes of iron ore. What will you take on?
Millars Well, Wickham and Dampier Primary Schools celebrated 10 years of involvement with the Waterwise Schools Program at special ceremonies last week. Millars Well Primary School in Karratha have been educating students about the need to value, protect and conserve our water sources, since joining the program as the tenth Waterwise School back in 1998. The school has also been working hard out of the classroom, creating a waterwise fruit and vegetable community garden to educate students on how to grow their own produce while saving water. Millars Well Primary School Deputy Principal Emma Cowling was enthusiastic about the garden’s development and the learning opportunities it will provide for students. Millars Well will receive its 10-year recognition certificate during their school assembly this morning. Wickham Primary School was also be presented with a 10-year certificate at an assembly on Friday, August 3. Dampier Primary School joined the Waterwise Schools Program in 1999 and received its 100year recognition certificate on Tuesday, August 7. Peter McAllister, Water Corporation North West Regional Manager commended Dampier Primary School students and staff on either excellent work to promote the waterwise message. Now in its 17th year, the Water Corporation’s Waterwise Schools Program takes a long-term approach to water education and behavioural change, and complements the curriculum framework across all major learning areas, especially society and environment. Further information on the Waterwise Schools Program is available from the Water Corporation’s website www.watercorporation. com.au

• Doopa Dog on the Red Dog bus
Well, what a weekend! Organiser, Helen Hall and the Lion’s Club volunteer’s sure do know how to ensure everyone has a good time. And being the 40th anniversary of the FeNaClNG Festival, there were more stalls and rides than ever before. Every age group was thought of, whether it be for the mums, checking out the stalls, the car-nuts spending thousands on the latest car, the teenagers, going on every ride until they throw up or the kids dancing along with Fairy Queen Caroline. It was the first time the camel rides were in town for the festival, with the owner saying they had a huge number of people wanting to ride the camels and that they would love to come back for years to come. The weekend started like any other FeNaClNG Festival, with the float parade. There were hundreds of kids and proud parents waving from their decorated trucks, with the St Paul’s Primary School and their Olympic float in front, singing ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi! Oi! Oi!’ as loud as they could. The Karratha SES, Karratha BMX Club and Karratha Fire Brigade also joined in with the fun, as well as Peg’s Creek Primary School’s community spirit float and Karratha Scouts LNG Venturer. Horizon Power’s Roman Raudonikis did the honors of awarding the cash prizes to the best floats, with St Paul’s Olympic float being crowded in first place. Over the two days, locals were entertained with the beautiful singing of the many primary school choirs and gob-smacked with the skilled dancers of Dance Kix, Deckarts, Ovation, Terre Rouge and Dance FX. Watching the dance schools
sure came in handy for some of the young kids when Fairy Queen Caroline and Beehive approached the stage and got everyone up to dance. Along with Fairy Queen Caroline and Beehive, other well-known characters made an appearance at the festival, including Doopa Dog, who even tried to be like Red Dog on the official Red Dog bus, Captain Cleanup, who taught through songs that ‘Binners are Winners’, Hey Presto with ‘Stinky’ the raccoon, the Rocket Girls and so much more. There were so many activities for the kids, and even a few for the adults, including the 10th Apex Tug-O-War. This year, Lyons and Peirce finally had a bit of tough competition, with the KIE Tuggers. Local, national and international bench-presser, Nathan Baxter joined the KIE Tuggers team this year, in hope to give Lyons and Pierce a run for their money. However, Bigs Adz and the team of Lyons and Peirce didn’t want to let go of their winning streak, it was a close call, but they were able to take out another win. Later on Sunday night, a performance the whole town was looking forward to, the Songbirds hit the stage. Gina Jeffreys, Sara Storer and raunchy Beccy Cole got the crowd laughing and wanting more with their smart jokes, country dancing and powerful singing. The girls put on an amazing performance and even took the time to get to know the locals, signing autographs and getting photos, while the must-see fireworks were put on. Now that the festival is all done and dusted for the year, organisers are already thinking how they will make next year’s, bigger and better! For more photos, see pages 2/3 of the Echo Gig Guide

Dampier Art Awards In September, the Dampier Arts Awards will be celebrating its second year of showcasing the talent of local Dampier residents. In 2010 the Dampier Arts Awards made its debut with the support of the local community who were enthusiastic to showcase the talents within the town. The debut theme was “By the Sea” and a beautiful mermaid was the centerpiece in which all artwork was a reflection of the local residents affinity to the ocean in both work and play. The Dampier Art Awards endeavours to capture the essence of what life is like, living and working in the Pilbara. The theme for 2012 is “From little things, big things grow”, and enables the local artists to give us a snapshot of moments of time captured by a drop of paint or a smear of charcoal. This year, the Pilbara region is experiencing a huge transformation with the local land developments and the resource sector expanding at a rapid rate. The Dampier Art awards will be a reflection of the changing times of life in Dampier and the Burrup Peninsula. Jen Hourquebie, a resident of the beautiful Pilbara since August 2010, will be the judge of the entrants. Jen is working with Archipelago Arts and looks forward to seeing more arts and culture projects flourish in the region. She comes from an arts administration
background, since completing a Bachelor of Arts Management at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts. In 2008 she seconded to the Art Gallery of NSW and has worked at GFL Fine Art, The John Curtin Gallery, Artsource and The Walkington Theatre. Jen loves the lifestyle of the Pilbara, it’s history and ancient stories, it’s amazing landscapes and wildlife, and it’s potential for it’s communities to grow to be more sustainable, livable and culturally vibrant. To enter, all entrants must be 18-years of age or over, no photography will be accepted, all entries must be two-dimensional, all artworks must be suitably framed/stretched and fitted with hanging devices, artworks must not exceed 1.4mx1.4m in size and artwork must not exceed 12kg in weight. The artwork categories include, Coastal Landscape, Pilbara Landscape, Painting Open Theme, Works on Paper and Flora and Fauna. A People’s Choice Award will also be running throughout the two weeks exhibition period. Entries open on Monday, August 20 and close on Monday, September 3. If your artwork is chosen, it must be dropped off between Monday, September 3-4. The Awards Opening Night will be held on Saturday, September 8 and the exhibition period will run from Sunday, September 9 to Saturday, September 22.

Groundworks start on new Wickham South subdivision The Wickham South subdivision has reached an exciting milestone with earthworks commencing that will see the construction of over 200 new Rio Tinto company houses, plus land lots for Government and other service providers. Rio Tinto representatives attended the celebratory turning of the sod, along with Shire of Roebourne President, Fiona White-Hartig, Traditional Owners and project contractors Briety, and Aurecon. Long term Wickham residents, and Rio Tinto employees, Adrian Delint and Paul Lott were also present at the ceremony. “Wickham’s been my home for over 30 years and I’ve really seen this place transform – it’s a great place to live,” Mr Delint said. “My family and I are looking forward to seeing the town’s next phase of growth and are pleased about
the focus on family and lifestyle.” Shire President Fiona WhiteHartig agreed that the new Wickham South subdivision was an exciting development and commented that it was great to see new investment and expansion in the town. The earthworks for the new subdivision mark the first stage of development of Wickham South, following approval by the WA Premier of the town’s expansion in April this year. From mid to late 2013 onwards, Wickham South will become home to new residents as the house construction is expected to commence following nine months of earthworks and civil construction for the subdivision.
ABC North West up for national radio award By Elise Batchelor 40,000 kilometres – or two trips around Australia. If that’s the distance you’ve travelled in one year to connect with local people, then being recognised for your efforts might be as sweet as water in a parched desert. Such is the case for the ABC North West WA Local Radio team which has just become one of only three national finalists for “Best Regional Station” in the 2012 ABC Local Radio Awards. The gang’s 14 minutes audio entry, crafted by Regional Content Manager (ie. North West’s main man) Scott Lamond, focused on local news, local issues and face to face conversations with people spread across both the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions of WA. Reaching this stage was no mean feat for Mr Lamond, who was charged with the task of selecting highlights from an entire year’s worth of North West Breakfast and Mornings programs to create the final product for submission. He believes the face to face content that ABC North West has provided its listeners throughout the region is perhaps one of the reasons his team is up for this prestigious award. “Whether that’s through outside broadcasts or in person, I think that really trying to connect with people across a
massive geographical space really stood out.” Despite lengthy distances between major centres, ABC North West conducted approximately 20 outside broadcasts over the past 12 months. “It’s a huge challenge, but one we’ve managed through a good team and a lot of hard work.” Mr Lamond’s pride in the professionalism and zeal of his staff is undeniable. “We’ve done a lot of kilometres through the north west, covering a big patch and I’m very proud of each team member and what they put in.” “We’ve got the most enthusiastic bunch of people that I’ve ever worked with,” he said of a team which includes three program presenters and a producer, two journalists, a Rural and Resources reporter, a new ABC Open staff member and further reporters in both Karratha and Port Hedland. “We’re excited and pleasantly surprised that we’re in the top three of 51 stations around Australia,” Mr Lamond said. 267 entries across 16 categories came in for the ABC Local Radio Awards. ABC North West will compete against ABC Kimberley and ABC Mildura in Victoria for their category’s award. The ceremony will be held in Sydney on Thursday, October 4.
When the first stage of Wickham South is completed by early 2014, the population is expected to grow by about 800 new residents. Further expansion of the town is subject to final feasibility studies and investment decisions, which are expected later in the year. This project is part of Rio Tinto’s $300 million plus investment in infrastructure in Wickham, which also sees a significant improvement in community facilities.

Rio Tinto wows the crowds at FeNaClNG in Karratha Rio Tinto had bells, whistles, train tracks, salt pits and bike powered lights to wow the 10,000 strong crowd at this year’s FeNaCING Festival in Karratha this year. Over 50 employees from Iron Ore and Dampier Salt donated their time last weekend to man the display and answer questions from the many visitors to the Rio Tinto display. This year Rail had an impressive exhibit promoting the important
community rail safety message of look, listen and live and featured 14 metres of rail way track, signals, a HI Rail vehicle and a man haul service truck. Children and adults alike were drawn to flashing red lights and loud clanging of the signal bell, and this gave Rio Tinto employees an opportunity to explain key safety messages. Also featured in the Rio Tinto display was the salt pit, bike powered light display, Scitech interactive
activities, recruitment information, large scale poster showing all of Pilbara operations and a range of giveaway items. The Rio Tinto display succeeded in its objectives of raising awareness and strengthening the relationship between Rio Tinto and the community, as well as celebrating the 40th anniversary of FeNaCING Festival which aligns with the anniversaries in our Pilbara towns of Pannawonica, Paraburdoo
and Wickham. The name FeNaCING comes from the chemical symbols of the three main production and export commodities in Karratha and Dampier: Iron Ore (Fe), Salt (NaCl) and natural gas (NG – this is not strictly correct but makes the name work!). Rio Tinto has supported the festival since its inception and has participated most years since 1972.

Stay & Save Offer

Sod turned for skate park redevelopment Work to redevelop Tom Price’s iconic skate park is underway with the first sod turned by the Hon. Kenneth Baston at a ceremony last week. The $700,000 makeover project, supported by Rio Tinto, Lotterywest and the Shire of Ashburton, will return the popular recreation facility to its former glory. Renowned designers from Convic have finalised the new layout of the park following two consultation sessions with user groups in Tom Price. The shape and structure of the park will be redesigned to cater for skateboarders as well as BMX and scooter riders, making it accessible to all
users and skill levels. The structure will be built around the existing tree canopy to preserve shade. A parents’ retreat and a water fountain are just some of the additional features the skate park will boast once the redevelopment is complete. Rio Tinto general manager Tom Price Operations Sinead Kaufman said the project would result in a safer environment for all users. “Over the years unfortunately we have seen this facility slowly deteriorate but I now look forward to watching the redevelopment get underway,” Ms Kaufman said.
“The skate park will also provide a bold and vibrant entry statement to the town’s centre, which will be a welcoming new site for residents and visitors alike.” Rio Tinto is committed to support projects that promote Tom Price as a robust and diverse regional community. “We are proud to be a major funding partner of this redevelopment project,” Ms Kaufman said. “This is one of a number of projects planned to revitalise the town in response to the community’s desire for better quality recreation facilities.” The project is scheduled for completion by October 2012.
‘To feed or not to feed?’ That is the question There are many varied opinions about this topic as well as many ramifications from the wrong sort of artificial feeding, unless done responsible. Over a couple of weeks I will endeavour to highlight some of the problems associated with humans feeding wildlife and the ramifications of artificial feeding as well as the positive aspects. At some stage in our lives we all feed wildlife whether intentionally or unintentionally. The most common food people use from their backyards is bread, red meat (mince or steak) and sunflower seeds. On a larger scale spilled foodstuffs from picnics and BBQ’s as well as overflowing bins in public parks encourage scavenging by wildlife. Rubbish dumps, fast food chains, commercial fishing, and large scale food production (farming) all contribute to artificial food sources and an abundance of species. On top of this, some pet food manufacturers have cashed in on the market by providing ‘seed bells’, ‘wild bird’ seed or ‘lorikeet and honeyeater’ food and unsuspecting humans buy these without realising how unsuitable these type of foodstuffs are for our wild birds, regardless of claims by the manufacturers.

Feeding Wildlife: By Jenny Fox
Wealth Works Investments
The main reason humans feed wildlife is to be near the creature and encourage wildlife to their backyards. There is nothing wrong with occasionally feeding wildlife if the person understands their motives behind offering food as well as the problems associated with it unless it is done in a way that does not change the animals behaviour or make the animal dependant of the human for that food source. For example, the animal becomes aggressive towards humans when not fed, becomes destructive on property, or has increased breeding outside normal breeding season due to the artificial food source. Prime examples of this type of behaviour are dingos and monitors attacking people in national parks from being fed handouts (the most recent incident on Fraser Island) and magpies, butcherbirds, emus and cassowary’s becoming aggressive and attacking humans. Some of the larger parrots also cause damage to property when unsuspecting people think it’s cute to feed a few birds from the back door (me being one of these people) but then when the whole flock arrives and start creating havoc you suddenly realise the problem you have created. Something I recently learnt from the latest ‘dingo took my baby’ inquest for the Chamberlin’s case, was that at the time the baby was taken,
the senior ranger had written letters to the Northern Territory government advising of dingo attacks in the park and how the other rangers had been advised to cease feeding the dogs because of this fact (was on a ‘Four Corners’ television episode at the time). Apparently those involved were worried that the overseas tourism industry would suffer if it was made public so nothing was acted upon, and as a result this information was not brought to the court. The recent attacks that occurred on Fraser Island are the same scenario, people feeding the dogs making them bold and aggressive when the food is not forthcoming. Many of the national parks now have signs advising of fines if you are caught feeding the wildlife. I’m glad we live in a country where we are free from the giant predators, bears in particular, and do not have to deal with something that size raiding our bins! There are times where as an act of kindness we feed wildlife to help them through stressful times. Habitat destruction due to fires, drought or the recent floods, but this feeding is done in a way that it is not making the animal permanently reliant on the humans for food or making them bold and aggressive because of the feeding.

When Travis Hislop started art classes at Pilbara Institute this year, he announced to the class that he was going to win a prize at the Cossack Art Awards. Being a first time artist who hadn’t studied painting before, that assertion seemed a bit of a stretch but several months later, Travis came true to his word and was named Highly Commended in the Emerging Young Artist category. Travis explains he combined his love of fast cars with his love of painting to come up with a work of art, which caught the judges’ eye. “My painting uses all kind of effects,” he said. “You can see from the lines that the cars are zooming round the track. It really captures the feeling of the speedway.” Pilbara Institute lecturer, Leigh McNab, says entering the competition was a great exercise for the whole class, which comprises students with special needs from Karratha and Roebourne. “Our class meets every Tuesday and includes students and their carers, so each week we’d work together on our entries,” Leigh said. “Everyone was really excited to be involved and it was a fantastic way to boost confidence. “Of course, we were over the moon when we heard Travis had been named Highly Commended.” Travis says the best part about his nomination was going to the Awards night. “My painting was one of the ones which appeared on the big screen,” he said. “Leigh was saying, ‘Look Look!’ and I couldn’t believe it was there on the screen in front of everyone!” Travis and his classmates, Leah, Jess, Aaron and Joel are not just aspiring painters. They’ve also learned skills such as screen-printing, papiermache and sculpture. “The Certificate I in Visual Arts and Craft covers a range of different media and techniques,” Leigh said. “Also, for this class in particular, it gives students a chance to socialise in a relaxed environment while they explore new ways to express themselves.” As for Travis, he’s already got his sights set on next year’s awards. Although he hasn’t decided on his subject yet, he’s planning on submitting another masterpiece! “I’m going to win a major prize,” he said. “And then I’ll take everyone out to dinner!”

• Karratha Senior High School students with their banners enteries, the second from the right was choosen as best overall winner
KSHS banner on display in Perth Splashes of colour depicting all corners of our great State are currently on parade down the city terraces. And two students from Karratha Senior High School, Tasha Lee Synes and Hayden Thomas, have been awarded for their creative talents after being announced as the winners of the Best Secondary School category at the 2012 Banners in the Terrace competition. In addition to taking out their category, Karratha Senior High School was also awarded best overall entry for the annual competition. The initiative, run by the WA Local Government Association (WALGA) in line with their annual Local Government Convention, attracted 83 entries from all corners of the state. WALGA Chief Executive Officer Ricky Burges congratulated all entrants, saying this year’s competition was one of the best and the most competitive that the judges had seen. “The quality, vibrancy and calibre of the banners are increasing each year and the Shire of Roebourne’s banner
encompasses all those attributes as well as depicting Roebourne’s unique outback beauty,” Ms Burges said. This followed a locally-run competition led by the Shire of Roebourne earlier this year which attracted a large number of entries from schools and youth groups across the Shire. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig was on the judging panel of the local competition and congratulated Karratha Senior High School on their winning entry. “The students and everyone else involved in the project should be very proud of their achievement,” Councillor WhiteHartig said. “It is very exciting that the school has been acknowledged at a state level for their creative expression and pride for their community. “The winning design accurately showcased the unique landscape and lifestyle that we are so lucky to experience here in the Shire of Roebourne. “It also played tribute to the local mining industry that plays a role in shaping our community.
Local boilermaker makes State finals Roebourne local and Pilbara Institute graduate, Daniel Dann, has been named a finalist in the prestigious WA Training Awards in the category Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year. The 21 year old, who works at Rio Tinto’s Rail Operations at Cape Lambert, has gone from strength to strength after completing his off-the-job studies at Pilbara Institute in Karratha last year; an incredible result for someone who had such a rocky start to their trades training. “I started off my training as a carpenter but after everyone else dropped out of the course, I was pretty much left on my own,” Daniel said. “Luckily, there was a boilermaker at Broome TAFE who took me under his wing and showed me how to do some basic welding. After that, I was hooked!” With some experience under his belt, Daniel decided to apply for a metal fabrication apprenticeship and soon found himself studying at Pilbara Institute (formerly Pilbara TAFE), working for Apprenticeships Australia at Cape Lambert, hosted by Rio Tinto. “It worked out really well,” Daniel said. “Now I’m welding every day, working on massive rail cars that transport ore from Pannawonica to the Port. It’s incredible being part of such a major global operation.”
Now employed by Rio Tinto, Daniel says he’s had the chance to learn an array of valuable skills, which have boosted his confidence and his career goals. “Being able to practise my skills on the job means that I improve all the time,” Daniel said. “Not only that, but I’m surrounded by people who really know their trade so I’m constantly learning new and more efficient ways of doing things.” As for Daniel, he’s keen to make the most of every learning opportunity. “I want to keep training and improving, not just in the boiler making field but wherever there’s an opportunity to advance,” he said. “Having two younger brothers, I want to show them what can be achieved through training and education. I see my role as leading by example, not just for members of my own family but for other young Aboriginal people who need encouragement to pursue their goals.” The finals of the WA Training Awards will be announced on the Awards Presentation Dinner on Friday, September 14. Winners of the WA Training Awards may be eligible to represent the State at the Australian Training Awards in Melbourne on November 16.

Fear will keep you in the status quo, whereas approaching things head on and taking a chance will bring you to places you can only imagine. If weight loss or a new healthy lifestyle is important to you, then it is important to make time for it. Make a plan to deal with any of your life’s obstacles, plan to work around them if you have to, and keep trying until you conquer things and make changes. Everything you do may not work at first, there will be failures, but with failure comes the chance to reassess, learn and plan again, and as long as you are still planning, you are
still taking steps forward. It’s when you stop and give in that you forever remain still. For me, there came a day where taking charge of my life and eating habits became more important than anything else. I decided one day that I was sick of waking up feeling bad about myself and I would instead focus each day on positive changes that would help me wake up the next day feeling good about myself. As I worked to tackle things and made more and more changes each day, I found I would wake feeling empowered. Once the battle is won in your head, the physical battle will be easier. Don’t wait, start today and have a healthy week!!
Healthy Tips and Tricks Having a healthy week can only take an hour or so at the shops. Make sure that you are not hungry when you go to do your food shopping and only make healthy choices. I find that getting through the weekly shop with only good quality things in your trolley will go a long way to successfully sticking to a weight loss plan.
You will find that if it’s not in your cupboard you will always find another option. Have frozen fruit, yoghurt, honey and crushed nuts on hand for late night sweet cravings, or dry popped Popcorn or small bags of Pretzels for savoury. Think about what your body wants from the food, a sweet or savoury hit, and use your creativity to find it in healthy choices.
Serves 4 PER SERVE: Fat: 1.5 grams – Calories: 22 – Kilojoules: 93 Sundried Tomatoes are a gourmet delight that I absolutely love but I couldn’t bring myself to include in my healthy eating program until I figured out that we live in the perfect place to make your own and you can make them just as tasty but so much healthier with very little work. 1 Punnet of Cherry or Grape Tomatoes 1 tbs Dried Italian Herb Mix 1 tsp Balsamic Vinegar or Olive Oil Cut Tomatoes in half and toss them in the Dried Italian Herb Mix. Line Metal Baking Tray with Baking Paper. Spread Tomatoes evenly across the Baking Tray making sure there is space in between each one. Cover with cheesecloth or light mesh fabric to protect them outside. Place in elevated spot in the sun (I use the Bait Board of the Boat for this) and bring in each evening until they are dehydrated to your liking. You can have them Semi Sundried usually after one sunny day or fully Sundried after two or more. When they are ready, coat them in Balsamic Vinega r or Olive Oil or both, keep in the fridge and use within the next few days. You’ll find it hard to resist eating them all at once!!

Trunks-full of fun Child development experts are quickly realising the important role that imagination plays in helping young children interpret reality as well as being a key indicator of cognitive development. Digital entertainment and a risk-averse society are partially to blame for the way that children spend their time, and parents and care-givers are becoming increasingly aware of the shift away from oldfashioned creative play the very tool that inspires this imagination. As the custodians of our young generation entering an exponentially growing technological age, we must take responsibility for inspiring the creativity and learning skills our young people need to grow and develop in a healthy way. Two young mothers Barbara Grimm and Regina Delborrello are helping
solve the growing problem by “thinking Outside The Box” and creating trunksfull of FUN-damental play activities with their product, Funky Elephant. This innovative and unique Australian concept is a subscription based, thematic activity and craft line that inspires creativity and formative rationale under the guise of fun and make-believe – and kids love it! The structured activities are gender-friendly and designed for three to seven year olds with progressive play and recycling opportunities that lasts for days and even weeks. The low-priced, value packed subscriptions are a set price of $22.95 per month including nationwide delivery, which equates to peanuts for Funky Elephant trunks. One of the most appealing aspects is the
surprise element and personalised ownership a child takes in receiving a parcel addressed to them personally in the mail. The opportunities to take advantage of Funky Elephant entertainment ideas extend to Restaurant amusement, getwell packs, travel packs, fundraising promotions, gift vouchers, party packs as well as a fantastic option for a party favour. Co-Director, Barbara Grimm, is excited about the promising beginnings and exciting business plans for the future. “We’re doing a bit of science and environment, imaginative play, sometimes it’s seasonbased, but while the theme changes it’s always traditional and educational with loads of age-relevant package designs to entertain children,” she said. Rocking up to gigs in the official Red Dog movie bus really sets local rock band, the Setting Sons apart from the rest.
But it’s not just the iconic symbolism of the Pilbara that makes the band stand out, but also ‘flavour’ and ‘rockier edge’, as guitarist and singer, Daz tell us. The Setting Sons began their musical journey together six months ago with Daz, Juz, Henry and George. With Daz on the guitar and microphone, Juz on the drums, young Henry on the lead guitar and George on the bass, the Setting Sons are soon to take over the Pilbara with their pub rock sound.

....to Rock Karratha!!
Forming because of the lack of good pub rock bands in the Pilbara, Daz said they thought they would do it the old fashioned way. “Live bands are more raw and personal as they’ve got a stronger, more wholesome sound,” he said. “At the moment, we only play covers as we are still getting into the groove and getting the right sound. “We’ve only played about a dozen gigs, but we have had a lot of support. “We’re only new in the music scene, and James Cutfield has been great to us and helped us get gigs around the town.”
Although only having played a small number of gigs so far, they blew the audience at the FeNaClNG Festival away when they played both Saturday and Sunday night. “We are now taking on more gigs, cooperate, parties, everything!” Daz said. “We’re all about bringing the life to the party.” Even though they currently play only covers, Daz said that by the end of the year, you would be hearing a lot more original songs. “We’re in Karratha to stay and the Pilbara is where we get most of our inspiration from,” he said. “One of Henry’s songs was just recently played on the

Pilbara Community Rail Safety campaign ramps up Rio Tinto is launching a new Pilbara wide community rail safety campaign next week in line with the Rail Safety Week programme. LOOK. LISTEN. LIVE. is the key message for the Rio Tinto 2012 campaign and urges the community to be aware of oncoming trains around rail crossings. Rio Tinto general manager Railway Operations Ben Van Roon said the company owns the largest private rail heavy freight network in Australia which is currently expanding in line with Rio Tinto’s goal to achieve 353 million tonnes per annum by mid 2015. “Every year we take the opportunity to promote community rail safety messages during Rail Safety Week, and this year we have extended this to include a revamped school awareness activity pack (including colouring competition), television
commercial and an impressive display at FeNaCING Festival in Karratha. “We think it’s important to maintain a high level of community awareness about rail hazards as unfortunately our Rio Tinto train drivers continue to report near misses and irresponsible behaviour around rail lines, so it’s important for us to continually remind people, especially children, of our safety messages,” Mr Van Roon said. Mr Van Roon also noted a significant increase of visitors to the Pilbara at this time of the year that may not be aware of safety precautions around rail level crossings and tracks. “We understand that many people are interested in having a close look at our Ore trains, which are up to 2.5 kilometres long, but it is important to remember for your personal safety to remain at least 10 metres from the rail track, and
even if the train has stopped it could start at any time with no warning,” he said. The FeNaCING exhibit featured 14 metres of rail way track, signals, a HI Rail vehicle and a man haul service truck which drew children and adults alike to flashing red lights and loud clanging of the signal bell, and this gave Rio Tinto Rail employees an opportunity to explain key safety messages. Rail safety tips include: • Always slow down when approaching rail crossings and ensure it is safe to cross – never try and race the train; and • Never go near or on the rail way track or a stationary train and wagons as the trains could move at any time and are coordinated remotely. Presentations and prizes will be made to the school children competition winners, at school assemblies, later this month.
Roebourne students to visit South Korea Two young artists from Roebourne will travel with their mothers and Yijala Yala Project staff to launch the interactive comic NEOMAD Episode 1: Space Junk, and run a masterclass for South Korean students. They will also participate in the International Childrens Comic Festival and have been busy drawing their own comics in preparation. The Love Punks are really excited about travelling to South Korea. 11-year old Maverick Eaton, also known as Garuwarra in NEOMAD, said he feels good about going out of Australia and seeing a different place. “I’m also looking forward to teaching people how to do what we’ve done so they know how to do it,” he said. NEOMAD is a ground breaking epic sci-fi adventure app made for iPad as part of the Yijala Yala
Project, Big hART’s long-term arts engagement project in the Pilbara. It involves a unique meeting of pop-culture and traditional culture using contemporary digital tools. Illustrator Stu Campbell, creator of the multi-award winning NAWLZ interactive comic series, has been working with 30 young people to develop their digital media skills through the Yijala Yala Project. Using Photoshop and graphic tablets donated by Wacom, the team first created animations for an online game featuring the Love Punks, a group of tech-savvy adventurers intent on bringing positive change. Their latest collaboration has seen them applying a complex colouring system to more than 200 scenes to create NEOMAD.

Variety is the spice of Onslow
K 26
By Elise Batchelor The saying goes that variety is the spice of life and now the coastal community of Onslow has its own Variety Children’s Charity. This development is due to the enthusiasm of former Port Hedland residents Tracey and Bruce Strahan who moved south from Hedland to Onslow recently and took their Variety Club passion from one town to the next. Variety Onslow has already taken off with a bang, with the couple having organised and orchestrated a quiz night which raised more than $9,500. “We just went around town asking for prizes and had some fantastic prizes donated,” Mr Strahan said. These included paintings, trips to outlying islands, local flights, a Perth Glory jumper and a voucher to the local restaurant, among other prizes, due to the generosity of the town’s business owners and
larger companies. “The people who won first prize actually donated it back, so we got to auction that off again too!” Mr Strahan added. He believes the 700 strong (and growing) Onslow population has a great community spirit and are the sort of people who enjoy getting in and helping out, such was the Variety Club charity’s first quiz night and auction success. Mrs Strahan said that the town hasn’t had a quiz night or auction night for some time, so people really got into the spirit of the occasion. “It’s something we’ve been passionate about for the last five years,” Mrs Strahan said. “Onslow is a small community and Variety is a great way to be getting involved and getting to know people. “They really dug deep.” Onslow residents who would like to join Variety can call Peter Strahan on 0407 381 008.

Three gentlemen had each purchased a qajaq (kayak) with the objective of paddling together on a regular basis, and then meeting socially afterwards. The DMQC currently meets for a paddle at 4:45pm on the first Thursday of each month. The meeting point for these paddles is the beach situated immediately to the north of the Hampton Harbour Yacht Club.
Most DMQC meets are well attended, although there are some occasions where (e.g. due to work and family commitments) there may only be a handful of paddlers. The Mankini component came about through repeated requests by females that we wear the celebrated European symbol of class. Initially that request came from our wives but it gathered momentum and soon enough, total strangers (women) were approaching us in the street, pleading that we reneg on our decision to wear stubbies and blue singlets. In the end, we folded under the pressure. Q: Where does the word ‘qajaq’ come from? A: It’s the Innuit word that was changed phonetically to kayak. We prefer the original word as it has a style about it that reflects the culture of our membership, and allows us to incorporate all types of craft within our club - from sit-on-tops to cockpit craft - all
paddling people are welcomed. It has also broadened our Scrabble vocabulary. Q: Was it true that some of your members were aiming at London 2012? A: We were all in the mix there for a while but the tyranny of distance (from Karratha to Dampier) affected our training availability and the selection trials were not as successful as we’d hoped. One of our club members was in Italy doing some altitude training and managed to get a bit of part-time modelling in Monaco, but he fell just short as well. Next objective for us is the Worlds in Alice Springs. Q: The Yak is your Logo - what’s the significance? A: The Yak is a fearsome, intelligent, strong, muscular, impressive beast. Q: Meeting socially after a paddle what does that entail? A: Our current members are family men,
and we are the first to recognise that we have plenty of responsibilities at home. We also loathe to leave our little-ladies in the lurch. So, it’s just a brief ‘Gatorade’ to rehydrate after our monthly paddle. Whilst we’d love the opportunity to talk paddling techniques and tactics, it’s just a way of blowing off steam after a hard paddle. “Paddle hard - play hard,” I suppose you might say. Q: Is your Club open to new members? A: We are open to both men and women paddlers of all ages. If you’d like to join in on one of the regular DMQC paddles, please meet the crew just north of the Hampton Harbour Yacht Club at 4:45pm on the first Thursday of each month. A good sense of humour is all that’s required... you don’t even need a Qajaq… or a mankini.

Goosebumps, laughter and tears “Amazing, spectacular and professional” was how onlookers described new dance school Ovation Performance Company’s debut public performance at the weekend’s FeNaClNG Festival. The event provided a fantastic opportunity for parents to see the results of two terms under the tuition of Miss Megan, Miss Leah and Miss Amy within the nurturing and disciplined culture engendered at Ovation. “We were overwhelmed by the positive response from our parents, many stating they were moved to tears,” says Miss Leah. Children from three years to young adults were on display, showcasing their skills in tap, jazz and ballet. The breadth of choreography saw dancers leaping, turning and waltzing with acrobatic displays and heart soaring lifts. The performance consisted of 20 minutes of non-stop entertainment to a medley of Michael Jackson, as one dance piece led directly into another. At no point was the stage empty with even typically apathetic brothers and fathers
congratulating Ovation and expressing how impressed they were with the piece. The event was also an excellent opportunity to announce the success of two of Ovation’s talented and dedicated students. Hayley Bruce (13 years) and Ethan Louis (17 years) have been offered places in elite full-time ballet schools in Perth, including the WA Conservatoire of Classical Ballet. These schools only accept students into their full-time program by audition and only if they believe students can make dance their career. “They have worked so hard and we are immensely proud of them,” Miss Megan says. Without Ovation, these students were set to be abandoned at the end of last year as no existing dance school in Karratha was in a position to offer these students the level of ballet they require for achieving acceptance into full-time ballet schools in Perth. “One of our main motivations in opening Ovation was to provide a training hub for
aspiring young performers to assist in launching their dance careers. It is exceptionally rewarding to see everyone’s dedication paying off,” Megan says. With the addition of Miss Viktoria, who has completed her training in Russian Ballet and comes all the way from Estonia, Ovation is now able to offer students the experience of Ballet Repertoire from famous ballets such as Cinderella, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. Although the new kid on the block, it certainly looks like Ovation Performance Company is well on its way. Pictures on right: courtesy of Caroline Moylan

The Broncos were unable to field a side in Wickham and were forced to forfeit the game. In Karratha though, Roosters bounced back to form beating the Storm comprehensively 36 – 12. It was a strong performance by the Roosters and will give them a lot of confidence going in to the finals. Next week is the final round of home and away games and will be a double header in Wickham. Both games will be played at Wickham followed by the PLRA medal count for the Best and Fairest player of the competition.
The Great Bike Hike is rolling into town on September 6, with Inclusion WA eager to showcase the inclusive and welcoming nature of the Karratha community. Inclusion WA is partnering with the Shire of Roebourne, The Great Bike Hike, the Lions Club and many other organisations to do just that. This is an event that doesn’t come around every year, and thus, Inclusive WA are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to the community. The clinic will be followed by a community-building barbecue where we can all get together, meet the riders and socialise as ‘one community’.

Free Weekly 11 - 12 August 2012 • Off to a good start
Attard takes out Rampants Folly Last Saturday, following a three-week break across the school holidays, the mountain bike season continued with round seven at the undulating Rampants Folly course on Saturday, August 4. To make things more interesting the track was tackled in reverse direction which meant the hills were more difficult and the down hills sections required careful negotiation. Obviously the break had re-energised riders because a healthy turnout saw 25 riders take on the course despite of the distractions of FeNaClNG. In Elite category, Jason Attard, gaining motivation from a new machine, won in a time of 44 minutes and 49 seconds from very consistent Mark Smith (46:28)
• Number 20 during the race
in second and Troy Atkinson (48:22) third. The absence of the top three placed riders in the Elite category points tally means that Jason, Mark and Troy will each take a much appreciated step up the ladder board.
What is more impressive is that Toby was riding as fast as many of the riders in the Expert category and will be a force in future seasons.
with Pickford brothers, Jarrad (first) and Lachlan (third) sandwiched William Gethin (21:07) with times of 19:36 and 31:46 respectively.
Simon Blyth finished a distant second in 42:52 and Rodney Gethin was third with a time of 45:59.
Round eight of the Scott Cycles 2012 Mountain Bike season will take place on Saturday, August 18 and takes riders to the fun but challenging 7 Mile Creek course.
The Expert category witnessed the much improved Trevor Phelps continue his run of wins in 42:08, trailed closely by Dave Dann (43:18) all race.
In the ladies category, Sally Smith picked up her fifth win for the season making her a firm favourite to take the overall category win.
Gavin Smith rounded out the podium in third with a hard fought 46:52 for his 6 laps.
Sal’s time of 32:28 was convincingly ahead of second placed Janyce Crawford (37:33), however third placed Mikayla Smith (38:43) pushed Janyce all the way.
Toby Muller (38:02) continued his dominating form this season in the Sport category, having moved up from Juniors in 2011.
Three juniors managed to tear themselves away from the fun and festivities of the FeNaClNG carnival
• Number 81 hot on number 19’s tail
The track is accessed via Madigan Road and is on the right just before the creek. Competitors should be there by 3:30pm for a 4pm start. For more details on the next event and full results from this event please check out the club website (http://home. spin.net.au/burrupmb/). See you out there.
