Karratha Detectives along with Karratha DCT arrested five juveniles last week for a trail of serious offences committed around Karratha. The crime spree started at a house in Nickol. The juvenile offenders entered through an unlocked sliding door and searched the kitchen and lounge room for valuables while the occupants of the house slept. They stole keys to a car and a mobile phone. They walked outside and used the keys to steal the occupant’s vehicle. The offenders drove around Karratha but returned to the house as the vehicle was low in fuel. They parked up near the house and re entered the premises through the same door and searched the house for another set of keys for the occupants’ second vehicle. The offenders made it outside with the keys and another mobile phone when they were disturbed, causing one of the offenders to drop the keys and run
back to the vehicle they had left nearby and stole it again. They drove to Caltex to fuel up when they were spotted by police. Police followed the offenders until they dumped the car near Tambrey Primary School, jumping clear of the car and leaving it to roll into a tree causing extensive damage. The next day the group were walking past a house in Baynton when they watched as a person drove off leaving their house vacant. The offenders went into the house through an unlocked rear door and stole a mobile and cash from the house. On the way off the property the offenders climbed on to the victim’s boat and stole a fire extinguisher. The following day these offenders entered a house in Nickol through an unlocked rear door and stole an ipad, jewellery and other property. They were apprehended by patrolling police a short time later in possession of the stolen property.
This apprehension led to the offenders being interviewed by police. The investigating officers discovered information and evidence from these offenders that led them to the other offences they had committed. Nearly all the property was recovered and returned to its rightful owners. One of the juveniles was released on a 24 hour curfew until the court date. This juvenile only waited a few hours until he went to a house in Nickol and entered through an unlocked bathroom window and stole an iphone and jewellery. Police were right on the tail of this offender and arrested him once again the next day. The offender told police where to find the stolen property which was then returned to the owner. Police arrested the five juveniles for a total of 28 charges. One juvenile alone was arrested for 10 of these charges.

Karratha upgrade stars town’s first traffic lights By Tamara Binamat As part of the Dampier Highway upgrade, Karratha got the green light for it’s first set of traffic lights, officially turned on Monday. Two intersections have been signalised on Dampier Highway. One set at Exploration Drive and another at Madigan Road.
at the intersection at Burrup Road. “That’s to cater for the large movement of vehicles from Karratha to the Burrup that occurs in the morning and in the afternoon,” he said. There is an estimated 10,000 vehicle movements a day from Karratha to the Burrup.
The intersections are formed of concrete, rather than typical road pavement, to cater for turning movements of large vehicles such as triple road trains.
Main Roads said the current sets of traffic lights in Karratha will be fitted with CCTV vision, meaning the intersections can be monitored if need be.
A Main Roads spokesman said a third signalised intersection is due to be completed by early next year
“If there’s a whole lot of traffic in one direction we can adjust the phasing of the signals to help clear the
congestion,” he said. Shire of Roebourne president, Fiona WhiteHartig said the new traffic lights are a necessity in making the road safer. “I think it’s just part of progress and making Karratha a city,” she said. “Dampier Highway has a huge amount of traffic, it’s about making the road safe and workable.” Paul Rosair, Director General at the Department of Regional Development and Lands said the traffic lights fit in with the Pilbara Cities vision. “It’s about growing into a city of 50,000 people and in all cities around the world and Australia, traffic lights is a part of this to allow the safe and effective movement of the population around the city,” he said. “This is an exciting time in the transformation of Karratha into a city and shows that the vision is coming to fruition.”

The introduction of traffic lights in Karratha is a quick indication that the Pilbara Cities vision is moving forward. Mr Rosair said it is a sign of population growth, delivering an increase in traffic movements and the flow on requirement for safe, effective and efficient movement of these vehicles around the city.

Boat sinks during fishing trip near Bedout Island By Tamara Binamat Three men, believed to be Port Hedland locals, were on a typical North West fishing trip when their boat sank overnight. Last Saturday evening the men where anchored near Bedout Island when their boat took on water about one foot deep.
the owner of the boat dived down and activated the EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacon) before all men made the one and a half kilometre swim to Bedout Island. The men had intended to retire at Bedout Island on the night but could not gain access due to the low tide.

As a result of all three men standing up together, the vehicle rolled before sinking. The men clung on to the nose of the boat until it completely sunk.
The following morning emergency services were called out to conduct the marine search using helicopters and the three men were found on the beach standing next to a large ‘HELP’ message drawn into the sand.
confirmed they received the first call for help around 6am and by 8:30am the rescue was complete.

The tawny frogmouth The tawny frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) is an Australian species of frogmouth. The tawny frogmouth is often mistaken to be an owl. Many Australians refer to the tawny frogmouth by the colloquial name of Mopoke, which usually are common alternative names for the southern boobook. Frogmouths are not raptorial birds.[2] Although related to owls, frogmouths are more closely related to nightjars and oilbirds. camouflaged tawny frogmouths blend in with colour and texture of tree bark. Males and females look alike and are 35–53 centimetres long. This very bulky species can weigh up to 680 grams. This species reaches the heaviest weights known in the Caprimulgiformes order. They have yellow eyes and a wide beak topped with a tuft of bristly feathers. They make loud clacking sounds with their beaks and emit a reverberating booming call. Tawny frogmouths hunt at night and spend the day roosting on a dead log or tree branch close to the tree trunk. Their camouflage is excellent, staying very still and upright, they look just like part of the branch. The tawny frogmouth is almost exclusively insectivorous, feeding rarely on frogs and other small prey. They catch their prey with their beaks rather than with their talons, another way in which they are different from owls. Owls fly around at night hunting food, but tawny frogmouths generally remain sitting very still on a low perch, and wait for food to come to them. They catch prey with their beaks, and sometimes drop from their perch onto the prey on the ground. The bird’s large eyes and excellent hearing aid nocturnal hunting.
Father’s Day is forever Dear Dad, Thanks a lot You made me promise Forget-you-not
and feed the dog and walk the cat and promise I’ll never produce a pet rat
To shine your shoes And water your plants And praise your dinners And smile when you dance
and get the mail and be polite and go to bed by eight at night,
To laugh at your jokes (even stolen from Kochie) And clean up my room (sometimes there you get bossy)
and pay your bills and do your tax and add up the figures and reconcile facts.
and weed the yard and fill the pool and do my homework straight after school
Well, that was ok until Father’s Day came. And I said it outright, The joke’s getting lame.
For when you are 80 And Dad is 100 You figure the reasoning’s totally blundered.
Community Update Residents of Karratha will be aware that works are in progress as part of the Pilbara Underground Power Project (PUPP). The project is a major electrical project and has many different stages. Currently contractors in the area are energising high voltage and low voltage circuits. The high voltage circuit brings power into the area while the low voltage circuit distributes it into the properties. Horizon Power’s number one priority is the safety of the community and we would encourage you to be aware, and to make children aware, of the potential dangers of touching or digging around electrical equipment that is now underground. Green dome
The green domes are usually near a home or shop. They connect electricity to homes, shops and other buildings which need power. The domes contain wires which carry electricity. If this dome is damaged or interfered with in any way, an electric shock could result which can lead to severe injury or death.

Transformers are housed in a green metal box. The purpose of transformers is to change high voltage electricity down to low voltage electricity so it can be used in the home, shops and school. If the transformer is opened, damaged or played on, an electric shock could result which can lead to severe injury or death.

Tawny frogmouths and owls both have anisodactyl feet meaning that one toe is facing backwards and the other three face forwards. However, owls’ feet are much stronger than the feet of the tawny frogmouth as owls use their feet to catch their prey. Owls are also able to swing one of their toes around to the back (with a unique flexible joint) to get a better grip on their prey. Tawny frogmouths have fairly weak feet as they use their beaks to catch their prey. Owls eat small mammals, like mice and rats, so their bones are shorter and stronger than those of tawny frogmouths which usually hunt smaller prey. Tawny frogmouths typically wait for their prey to come to them, only rarely hunting on the wing like owls. Tawny frogmouth pairs stay together until one of the pair dies. They breed from August to December and usually use the same nest each year, and must make repairs to their loose, untidy platforms of sticks. After mating, the female lays two or three eggs onto a lining of green leaves in the nest. Both male and female take turns sitting on the eggs to incubate them until they hatch about 25 days later. Both parents help feed the chicks. When feeling threatened, the tawny frogmouth stays perfectly still, with eyes almost shut and with bill pointed straight, relying on camouflage for protection.

Exmouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ExCCI) has been urging the Department of Transport to upgrade the local harbour and boat pens. The Exmouth Boat Harbour is now the third largest in the state under the control of the Department of Transport and late last year an ExCCI working group was established to advise the DoT on the future requirements for the harbour by major stake holders. With no progress to date, there are now times when there is a waiting period for berthing and other times when the mix of vessels at the wharf is not ideal. The heavy lift and fast fueling facilities are considered highly inadequate and at times large marine supply vessels dwarf 50-60 foot charter vessels whose passengers need to embark and disembark around safety barriers for working cranes and semitrailers. The DoT was contacted for comment and said “The DoT has recently allocated funding for the construction of approximately 23 new boat pens at Exmouth Boat Harbour and has awarded a contract for the work. “Detailed design work is progressing for the new facilities which will be available to both recreational and commercial owners,” Donna West, General Manager Coastal Infrastructure Department of Transport said. The DoT has revised its submission for funding from Regional Development and Lands (RDL) giving priority to the extension of the service wharf by 130 metres, new heavy lifting facility and relocation of the
trawler pens. DoT is awaiting the outcome of the funding submission to RDL. According to ExCCI President Jon Warren there is an issue of funding between DoT and Royalty for Regions that has largely staggered progress. “Addressing the issue of the pens is important but still there are critical aspects of the project that need the go ahead in order to have the facilities at a reasonable standard,” he said. “We are unconcerned where the funding comes from, this facility is clearly inadequate and is recognised as such by all parties. “There have been numerous meetings between various parties regarding this vital infrastructure and the time for decisions is now,” he said. “It is well known that Dampier is busting at the seams and it is ludicrous that vessels are still required to steam 170nm each way to service Floating Production Storage and Offloading units (FPSO) and rigs from there when they are just 20 or 30nm from Exmouth. “The five FPSO’s off Exmouth are responsible for nearly 70% of Australia’s total oil production,” Jon Warren added. The Department of Transport has been holding a waiting list of up to 40 applicants for boat pens for a number of years. While they look to start construction before the end of the year, there will likely be a shortfall in the number provided versus the number needed as many of those who have requested pens have given up on waiting. RDL did not provide any comment after request.

fun,” Gonzo said.
Thunderbirds are go!
“It’s always good to raise money for any charity, they need the money and we have fun along the way,” Jubby said.
That’s right, the Thunderbirds are participating in the 2012 Variety Golden Outback Bash, which started on Saturday, September 1 and will run until Saturday, September 8. The team is made up of locals, Gonzo and Jubby, dressed to impress in the famous common mid-blue uniform, along with their Thunderbirds T6 ship, they will battle along the rugged roads of Western Australia to help bring smiles to people, as well as raising funds to help WA children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs. They will be hitting the gold trail to Hyden, Norseman, Kalgoorlie and returning through Sandstone and Dalwallinu, from abandoned gold mines to outback tracks and billy cans around the bushfire. Starting the June 1985, the Bash began with businessman, explorer and philanthropist Dick Smith, when he organised to take a few friends for a drive in the outback in old cars and at the same time raise money for charity. Since then, the annual Variety Bash has become Australia’s most successful charity motoring event. “It’s all about raising money and having
This is the first year that Gonzo and Jubby have participated in the Bash, gathering almost 20 local sponsors to help in the efforts of Variety Bash. “We are expecting it to be a bit of fun and to meet some new friends along the way,” Gonzo said. “And to put a smile on some people,” Jubby added. The Thunderbirds T6, originally an exambulance from Roebourne, has been decked out with subs for windows and not to mention, has been painted hot pink! “No one would expect a pink ambulance from Karratha,” Jubby laughed. With a rocket attached to the roof and shooting out bubbles, the Thunderbirds T6 is sure to bring smiles to people’s faces. “It’s a good old school theme that people will remember,” Gonzo said.
The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunty May (Sally Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero. The Sapphires (PG) 14 September at 7pm ON SALE NOW 1968 was the year the planet went haywire. All around the globe, there were riots and revolution in the streets. There were hard drugs, soft drugs, free love and psychedelic music. There was the shock of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy's assassinations. And dominating every other news story... there was Vietnam. For four gorgeous young women from a remote Aboriginal mission, 1968 was the year that changed their lives forever. Sisters Gail, Julie and Cynthia, together with their cousin Kay, are discovered by Dave, a downon-his-luck musician with attitude, a taste for Irish Whiskey and an ear for Soul Music. Dave steers the girls away from their country and Western origins, and flies them to the war-zones of South Vietnam, where they sing Soul Classics for the American Marines. On tour in the Mekong Delta, the girls sing up a storm, dodge bullets... and fall in love. Inspired by a true story, The Sapphires is a triumphant celebration of youth, courage, love, family and Soul Music. (PG, Comedy, Drama, Musical. Run time 103 Min)

The Environmental Protection Authority toured Port Hedland last week to meet with community and business members. Chairman Paul Vogel said the site visit was an invaluable opportunity to discuss the projects and issues facing the town with more than 50 local stakeholders. Together with Deputy Chairman Chris Whitaker and members Denis Glennon, Rod Lukatelich and Elizabeth Carr, the independent board toured several projects, including BHP’s Outer Harbour project, the North West Infrastructure Multi-User Port and the Roy Hill Iron Ore Port. The board also inspected dredging of the South West Creek and the expansion of the Fortescue Metals Group port. Mr Vogul said the EPA met with the Town of Port Hedland to discuss the EPA’s management of noise and dust in Port Hedland. “The EPA have had a long and ongoing involvement in those matters when it’s been assessing various port expansion proposals so we’re keen to see and understand how things are going,” he said. “The Port Hedland Industry Council

Mr Vogul said he was impressed with the Port Hedland Port Authority’s mangrove program. “The Port Authority are doing a good job in growing mangroves so that areas can be rehabilitated over time. We thought that was a very useful program.“ Dr Vogel said the Pilbara was an area that juxtaposed stunning natural assets, such as world class national parks, with extensive mineral and petroleum production. “Site visits are an important part of the EPA’s responsibilities,” Dr Vogel said. “Understanding and managing the cumulative environmental impacts of multiple developments in a region is essential. “The opportunity to see first-hand proposed areas for development, and the environmental factors that may be impacted if a development proceeds, is integral to adding to our knowledge of a region. “In addition, understanding whether impacts were as predicted for implemented projects is also important. “Discussing the issues with community members and stakeholders is also extremely beneficial.”

The Dingey family were heading back to the harbor after a nice day at Norbill Bay on Rosemary Island at about 3pm last weekend, when they came across a family of whales just outside the entrance to Hampton Harbour. Claire Dingey said her family came across the two adults and one baby whale and said the experience was fantastic. “Usually we head out past Nelsons Rocks to try to find whales before we settle at a beach but this day was a bit bumpy so we decided against it,” she said. “But as luck would have it these whales were waiting for us when we headed back in. “It was wonderful to see because the group looked like a mum, dad and baby.” Claire said at first the whales
were slowly moving along at surface level directly in front of their boat. The Dingey family stopped the boat and watched from a good distance. After a few minutes one of the whales poked his nose out of the water. “Before we knew it they were doing a big circle around us coming right towards the boat which meant John (the skipper) had to get it started and move away,” said Claire. “We have heard stories that they have been seen by other people in this close, but we hadn’t seen them this close in before this day. “A couple of years ago we had a great experience with whales that came straight for us and dove under the boat.”

Dawn to Dusk the People’s Choice By Tamara Binamat She says she never intended to win, but Courtney Bertling has taken home the prize for winning the People’s Choice category in the 20x20x20 exhibition. The exhibition was run as part of the Cossack Art Award 20th Anniversary public program, where 20 pieces from 20 artists were selected for the exhibition and featured for 20 days at the Karratha Visitor Centre. Courtney, 22-years-old, said winning the award for her photograph titled Dawn to Dusk came as a surprise. “I was shocked. I put my piece in never expecting to win,” she said. “For me it was more of a personal thing. “Around that time I was going through a hard time emotionally and felt like I never had anytime for myself. “The exhibition came up and I thought it was a perfect opportunity to spend some time with myself doing something I love.” Courtney had the idea of planting work boots in front of a landscape representing the Pilbara for about one year before she found the perfect time to execute her idea. She took the winning shot one week before the 20x20x20 competition closed. “I went out for seven days trying to get the right sunset and submitted it half an hour before the competition closed,” she said. “So many people have said that I’m really talented, and I guess I need to spend more time on myself to get that talent out.” Winning the award is only the beginning for Courtney, who said the competition has sparked a new happiness and opened business opportunities. Karratha Visitors Centre have offered to run a limited edition of the print so people can buy a signed copy of the photograph. “If it wasn’t for the exhibition coming up I don’t think I would have taken the chance to do something for myself,” Courtney said. “I’m more open to pleasing myself from now on.”

Custom knife maker cuts through the Pilbara
By Tamara Binamat
Custom knife maker David Brodziak and his wife Gail are making artistic knives for customers as diverse as the King of Riyadh, to miners in the Pilbara. After nearly selling out in Port Hedland, Brodziak Knives are touring Karratha, displaying their quickly diminishing stock. David has been a custom knife maker for 22 years, starting the venture as a hobby. “I really enjoyed woodwork and working with steel. “I also had a background in art, so it was a combination of the artistic ability along with the passion for working with
timber,” he said. David uses West Australian hardwoods for the handles, but has been known to use dinosaur bone and dinosaur droppings in custom orders! He’s made knives for master chefs and even the King of Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia. “The King of Riyadh was buying the more upmarket knives with the artwork on them,” he said. “We sold him one with a dinosaur bone handle, that cost about $6,000.” The Brodziak’s say the most popular knives are good fishing knives, artistic pieces and hunting knives.

Panna youth celebrate local history An idea was born during a recent school holiday program, to create a keepsake and help commemorate Pannawonica’s 40 year history. The youth of Pannawonica were keen to give something to the town as part of the celebrations. Many workshops and another term later, a stunning mosaic started to take form. The kids involved in the school holiday program brainstormed their ideas with illustrations of what they thought represented Pannawonica. With a thick pile of inspirational pictures our resident artist Sarah James was asked to compile as many of the kids’ symbols as possible into a workable collage that could be created into a mosaic. The aim of the project was to have as many, if not every child including babies lay at least one tile on the mosaic. Each tile represents every child that has been here in years before and every child that lives in Pannawonica now. They are all a very significant part of Pannawonica’s history

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST
• Pannawonica 40th anniversary mosaic. and future. The coming together of all those tiny pieces to create something wonderful also reflects the important contribution that we all make in creating such a great little community. For those who have contributed, aged from babies only months old to a helper aged 70, the Shire of Ashburton hopes that in years to come you will be able to see and touch the mosaic and remember where you laid your tiles and how old you were. For those who have left and
come back to visit, we hope all these symbols bring back some lasting memory of your time in Pannawonica. So, it is with much excitement and great delight that the Kids of Panna with the help from the Shire of Ashburton present this mosaic to the town for its 40 Year celebrations and for all to enjoy for many years to come. A project like this does not come together without the help of many adult volunteers to help the kids put it all together.

George update, week 3 See what Newman tradesman, George, has been up to in the Big Brother house during the week. What we love about George this week: - When George admits that since being in the house he has become more feminine. - When George showed his Pilbara toughness when he helped Bradley destroy their enemies’ fort, tackling Ben to the ground. - When George tried out his ‘seatbelt’ dance on Sarah. - We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again, we love it when George works out, preferably topless. - When George said ‘testesterone’ instead of ‘testosterone’.
By Courtney Bertling George escaped the eviction of male housemates on Monday, being the second lowest nominated, only receiving two points. During the week, the housemate’s weekly task was to always say “yes Big Brother”, whenever Big Brother asked a question. The housemates had only three chances to say no. This is what George got up to last week. Naughty George George got caught speaking without his microphone, once again! This time, he was sent to the ‘naughty corner’ to become Big Brother’s Ironman, where he had to iron Big Brother’s clothes and some of the housemates clothes. Breaking another one of Big Brother’s rules, George’s lack of discreetness when asking Charne if she had ever been an emo, together with Ryan doing the same when getting information out of Estelle, the two caused the boys to lose a life when it came to guessing the girls secrets last Sunday night.
Smoochy George Before heading into the Big Brother house, George said that every night he went out, he always ended up kissing a girl. Well it took him 10 days, but he finally got to work out his lips. Even though Princess Layla has been snuggling up to Genius Michael a couple of nights before, it didn’t stop her from puckering up with George in the pool at Ryan’s model themed birthday party. “I’ve never kissed a princess before,” George laughed with his arms around her, grinning proudly to a couple of the boys. “He’s got the same family morals as me,” Layla later announced to the girls in the kitchen after confessing that a sneaky smooch had gone down in the bedroom previously. Although, she also admitted that he reminded her of a brother. No Big Brother The housemates were only given three chances to say ‘no’ to Big Brother. So when George was called into the
Diary Room, this is how it went down: Big Brother: George, do you find it difficult to maintain your dreadlocks? George: Yes Big Brother. Big Brother: George, you need to answer these questions truthfully. George: Yes Big Brother. Big Brother: Do you find dreadlocks unattractive? George: Yes Big Brother – while shaking his head. Big Brother: Do you find them a little heavy on your head? George: Yes Big Brother. Big Brother: George would you like to loose the dreads? *While in the lounge room, the other housemates were shouting “say no!” George: Yes Big Brother. Lucky for George, the housemates protested that he keep the dreads, and use one of the three ‘no’ responses that the housemates were allowed to use during the week.

The Naturalist’ Corner: Foods to feed wildlife By Jenny Fox Over the last few weeks I have covered the pitfalls of artificially feeding wildlife and now for those that do like feeding their local wildlife here are some simple steps you can take to ensure that you are doing the right thing by the critters. I’ll start with seed eaters. If you like feeding the doves and pigeons, or the corellas and galahs, buy budgie mix or a bag of chook wheat. The nutritional content is far greater than that in the ‘wild bird’ mix and is closer to the natural diet. If feeding butcherbirds and mudlarks,
I use Wombaroo’s insectivore rearing mix combined with a high quality lean beef mince (heart start) or kangaroo mince. Any of the rehabilitation manuals recommend using a high quality beef mince or kangaroo mince as the cheaper mince has too much animal fat that the birds can’t cope with. They also recommend freezing the meat for at least three days to kill off any toxoplasmosis present. There are many varied recipes but for supplement feeding but I just mix three tablespoons of insectivore into about 200 grams of mince. I have to add a little water as I mix as it becomes very dry.
I then divide it into an ice cube tray and freeze it, pulling out a cube as I need it. It can be kept for up to three months. If you have been feeding just meat it will take a few attempts for the visitors to accept the different mix, but persevere as they will accept the change. For yellow throated minors and honeyeaters I use Wombaroo lorikeet and honeyeater mix which is basically a nectar mix we use for all honeyeaters. I also use it for my pet lorikeet. I mix it in small quantities and usually with a quantity of high protein baby cereal – they love it!

Angel of Cuisine As the weather warms up again and we are all setting up our boats to get out there and hold a big fish, there are so many great opportunities to do outside activities, which means many potential downfalls in what you eat while you’re out there. Last week I trained with a group of friends an hour before they went to the circus. I told them not to eat the junk food there and to make sure they had a light dinner before they went. They all text me later and said they avoided temptation.
Email me at angelofcuisine@iinet.net.au and check out lots more recipes and inspirational ideas on my Facebook page

Free Weekly 1 - 2 September 2012
It’s so easy when you are out and about, or if you’re doing fun things to forget to eat and fuel your body properly. That’s when you find yourself pulling into the service station and buying everything in sight because it’s that time of day, or because you’re starving.
To avoid temptation while out and about takes an extra level of planning. Keep good choice snacks in your bag all the time. Spend a little bit of extra time the night before thinking about and planning how the day will go. Think of the types of food you can eat. Can’t take bananas on the boat, damn it! It’s bad karma, but, generally, bananas are a great all round easy to carry snack on the go.
Bake them fresh the night before, stuff with your favourite flavours and pack. They are hand size, easy to eat with a serviette and you can stuff the stuffings right in for much less mess. When you are wanting to reach healthy goals for yourself, you will spend a lot of time thinking about those goals, which is important. But if you spend every second time thinking about planning how to succeed, then that is a winning combination. Have a healthy week!
Unless you forget about them in your bag for too long, then they are not a winner.
“What the mind can conceive, it can achieve – Napoleon Hill
But for picnics, car rides and on the go activities they are super easy. When I go out on the boat I like to make tiny rolls with the bake-your-own multigrain or wholemeal rolls.
Recipe of the week Inspired by the circus being in town, we made a special healthy treat.
Bella’s Summer Peach Jelly Serves 8 PER SERVE: FAT: 0g – CAL: 114 – KJS: 479 1 packet Aeroplane Light Jelly Pineapple 1 pack Aeroplane Light Jelly Mango and Passionfruit 240 grams of sliced peaches Marshmallows and sprinkles to serve. Make jelly according to directions mixing the two flavours in the same bowl. Slice your peaches in half again so they are nice and thin and layer like mountains in the middle of your jelly bowls or cups.
• The Angel of Cuisine before (left), and after her transformation
Healthy Tips and Tricks
Cover with Jelly and allow to set. With such a low calorie count for this treat, you can afford to be creative with the tops.
Snacks can still be a devil of a downfall even if you think
Try:
you’re doing them right.
Diced fresh mango and real passionfruit pulp
Often you will eat twice
Raspberries and a little low fat custard
as many nuts as you should if
Light vanilla bean ice-cream with chocolate shavings
you are not really careful with portions.
Remember that a little goes a long way, this is still a lot of jelly and peaches to eat, so choose your toppings wisely and enjoy.
Same goes when you get caught out and about and are choosing a snack or meal.

The annual Karratha Apex Garden Party was held last weekend at Cossack, with the likes of Austin Powers, the gorgeous ladies of the Capitol and many more interesting characters turning up. Introduced in the 1980’s as a fundraising function by the local entrant in the Mrs Australia Quest, the Garden Party has become one of the biggest events for the Shire of Roebourne. Karratha Apex Club member Ray Barth, said the tickets sell out extremely fast, with this year only taking 30 minutes for all 450 tickets to sell out. “People had been lining up at the RSL Hall three and a half hours prior to the tickets going on sale, just so they could get a ticket,” he said. “It’s a huge undertaking for only eight members of the Karratha Apex Club to organise, so we wouldn’t be able to do it without the help of our sponsors. “So far, we haven’t had any negative comments, so we’re really happy with how people have responded.”

Local alternative rock band, Misguided, played during the whole day, performing pub rock cover songs like Led Zepplin, Wolf Mother and Audio Slave. Many interesting characters turned up for the event, including Buzz Lightyear, Sailor Moon, Zombies and even a few sheep. “It took us three weeks, 2500 cotton balls and eight bottles of glue to finish our costumes,” Kate Meers and Kylie Boslch said about their sheep costumes. “We lost count of the wine bottles,” they laughed. “When we cleaned up on Sunday morning, there were cotton balls everywhere,” Ray laughed when remembering the sheep. Former Karratha Apex Club president, Rob Briggs flew up for the weekend to cater for the event. “He flew up on the Friday, went straight out to Cossack to prepare on the night, and we didn’t see him again until Sunday morning,” Ray said. “He catered the whole event, with the help of a couple of the Dance Kix Karratha girls. “We have a lot of sponsors that we would like to thank, especially the St John’s Ambulance volunteers, Rio Tinto and the Fortescue Bus Service.”

By Courtney Bertling All different sport teams were represented at YOLO’s third event, from soccer, to cricket, rugby and football, YOLO’s Jersey Party was definitely not one to be missed. In anticipation of the NRL and AFL grand finals, the guys behind YOLO thought it would be good to show support for the clubs. With an extended liquor licence for the night, the local DJ’s kept the beats coming and the dance floor pumping until early hours in the morning. DJ Pharaoh said prior to the event that this was the first event he was not nervous about. “We already had 280 confirmed guests on our VIP guest list,” he said. “YOLO is all about bringing the city style clubbing to the Pilbara and we pull it off every

time.” YOLO is famous for their launch party, the White Party and now the Jersey Party, always bringing the town another reason to head out and dance. “The tickets aren’t expensive, we charge a good price for Karratha living and everyone knows the DJ’s,” DJ Pharaoh said. “Every DJ has an awesome reputation, for example, Hanky, he has a massive following and because of his following, he has secured a place to perform at Stereosonic in Perth. “YOLO wouldn’t be this popular without the support of the locals.” To keep up to date with upcoming events, photos and much more, search ‘Yolokarratha Tambrey’ on Facebook. After all the action at the Garden Party, last Saturday night, people didn’t want to go home at all, they wanted to keep on partying! The guys from local rock band, Rocket Surgery, organised a bus to make a drop off point direct to Tambrey Tavern after the Garden Party. The band played some great rock covers at the Garden Party After Party, with crazy dressed locals dancing around and rocking out to the music. Made up of Johnathon Bauke on the guitar, keyboards and vocals, Mike Courtney on the guitar, Bob
Dersch on the guitar and Mick Napier on the drums, the guys played over 60 songs on night. “We cover everything from 60’s to current top 40 hits, from Led Zepplin, to Lady Gaga and Kelly Clarkson,” Mick Napier said. “It was a great night and really positive for us.” Rocket Surgery’s journey began four years ago, however Mick said in the last 18 months they have slowly gotten bigger. “We’re starting to get heard more and also have more of a following,” he said. “We are one of the biggest cover bands in Karratha at the moment. “Hopefully we continue what we love doing for a long time.”

ABC North West Relay for Life! By Tamara Binamat They talked, laughed, slept, ate and sang while walking for 24 hours around McGregor Street Oval in Port Hedland. It was all for a good cause as the team from ABC North West joined 15 other teams to raise more than $120,000 for Port
Hedland’s second annual Relay for Life. The Cancer Council Relay For Life is a unique overnight fundraising event that brings communities together in the fight against cancer.
Participants walk, run, or skip around the designated relay track, continuing to pass the baton to team Australian Workforce Training members over a “Training the future workforce of Australia” nonstop, 24-hour period.

ABC North West station manager, Scott Lamond says although the team are sore this week, he counts the event as a success for a really good cause. “I was doing the two until three in the morning stint and it was really tough, but when
I thought about those who have suffered from cancer it made me realise there were others doing it tougher,” he said. Scott said the team were official supporters of last years event, and after the experience, ABC North West were keen to enter a team this year. “Everyone in the team has someone they knew who’d passed away from cancer, everyone in the team knew someone that had survived,” he said.

Junior baseball comes to Karratha The Karratha-Dampier Teeball Association is working hard to introduce a junior baseball competition to the West Pilbara. Currently teeball is a very successful junior sport that caters for children aged from year one through to year eight, but after this age group there is no opportunity for kids to continue in the diamond based sports until they are old enough to play in the adult softball competitions. A subcommittee of the KarrathaDampier Teeball Association has been established to introduce a six week junior baseball competition, for kids aged from year six through to year 12.

Paul Lowicki, chairperson of this subcommittee, hopes that this will give an opportunity both to experienced teeballers to develop their skills further, and for teenagers who have not played teeball for years, to reengage with a diamond
sport. To assist the subcommittee with skill development and raising interest, Lee Darracourt, from Baseball WA, is coming to Karratha on September 3 to spend a week visiting schools and running baseball skills clinics. Lee has played pro baseball in Canada as a shortstop and was also signed to the Detroit Tigers. Lee will be holding a free clinic at the Bulgarra East Baseball Diamond on Wednesday September 5 from 3:30 to 5:30pm. Registration for the baseball competition will be taken at this clinic and at teeball games on September 6. The season will commence on Thursday, October 18 at 5.30pm at the Bulgarra East Baseball Diamond. Local Players selected for WA State Regional Soccer Squads Football West, the governing body of football in Western Australia, has selected seven local Karratha Districts Junior Soccer Association (KDJSA) players into the 2012 Western Australian State Regional Soccer Squads. The players selected are Harrison Gray and Bodie Packham (U16) who are both representing regional WA for the 4th consecutive year; and first timers Thomas Balch (U14), Jonty Gray (U13), Callum Balch, Tom Sydney-Smith and Matthew Middleton (U12). The process for each of these players to gain selection in the WA State Regional Soccer Squads starts at a local level, as they are required to trial for a place in the KDJSA representative teams in June/July of each year. Successful players then compete at the Football West Country Week Talent Identification Tournament which is held in Perth during the October school holidays. It’s an event that attracts over 900 players from around regional WA. As the name suggests, Football West staff then identify a pool of talented players who are invited to attend State Country Camp in the following April. Of the 180 players who attend this
development camp in Perth, 96 players from around the state are selected to play in the six State Regional Soccer Squads in their respective age groups. These players and their squads are on representative duties during November 2012 touring Singapore and Malaysia. Football West along with the FFA (Football Federation of Australia) has sanctioned this tour and is under the direction and guidance from Football West coaching and management staff. The tour is a fabulous opportunity for these boys to showcase their soccer skills but also a chance to experience another countries custom and way of life. Congratulations to all seven boys for gaining 2012 WA State Regional Soccer selection. At a local level, these players and the four KDJSA Country Week teams they play in are now in full training mode to prepare for this years Talent Identification Week in October. The Association would like to wish the teams, their coaches, managers and support staff who have worked hard to make this participation possible, all the very best for the upcoming tournament.

West Pilbara Mud Crabs - AFL Masters Back in Action! By Clint Degebrodt. VSwans Regional Development Manager The newly appointed committe has anointed the team that represents the Shire of Roebourne in the AFL Masters WA competition the “West Pilbara Mud Crabs”. Deemed to be unique to the area and representative of some of the better players fitness levels, Mud Crabs president Alan
Sheperdson was happy to put the committee seal of approval on the name. “We had a look around and there was no other Crabs about so we thought it was all ours,” he said. “It represents the area and lets everyone know what we should be doing instead of trying to turn back time.” Having said that, the skills down at Kevin Richards are “none too shabby”. “We’ve got
a great mix of blokes down here, some former champions of the NPFL, some ex-WAFL players and some blokes that have never played before,” coach Greg Stott explained. “It’s really about having a trot, a kick and playing a game with a group of mates, and the social side isn’t bad either.” Stott, a player with both the Kats and the Sharks heads the coaching team that includes Kats and NPFL legend Geoff Harris

From the bush to the City to Surf By Tamara Binamat More than 45,000 people took part in Perth’s annual City to Surf event, including Karratha local, Chantelle Creevey, who says she had been wanting to run the event for many years. Chantelle said she loves fitness and after her sisterin-law competed last year it was extra motivation to take the leap to compete. Chantelle said this was her first City to Surf event, and had been preparing for 12 weeks, incorporating hill running and distance runs to get her fitness at its peak for the 21 kilometre half marathon. “I did some hills with my brother up radio hill, then when I went on my own I went over to tank hill
and did sprints up that. “I did pretty good until the 17 kilometre mark when I hit a big hill. My game plan was to just keep at a steady pace and not die!” she said. Chantelle said she ran for an incredible 90% of the time, and walked the rest. “The atmosphere of it got my adrenaline going. There were people along the whole way that cheered me on,” she said. Chantelle completed the race in two hours and 18 minutes. “I feel pretty good after achieving it, except my legs hate me,” she said. “I will definitely compete next year.”
