Karratha Police were on patrol along Dampier Road last week when they conducted a random traffic stop.
This quality traffic stop resulted in this person being charged with Possessing a Prohibited Drug.
The vehicle was seized due to the excessive speed and the driver was taken back to Karratha Police Station.
Police pulled the vehicle over and checked the driver’s licence and vehicle registration.
Last week Pilbara Traffic were conducting laser duties along Dampier Road at Gap Ridge, they were making sure all the drivers were obeying the 60km/hr speed limit.
Once back at the station both vehicle and driver were searched.
In the vehicle were other occupants who were known by police to have used drugs in the past. Due to this information Karratha Police conducted a search of the people and the vehicle. The search on one of the persons revealed a clip seal bag containing amphetamine to an approximate value of $400.
Most drivers were doing the speed limit and driving safely but one particular person drove his vehicle at a speed of 122 kilometres per hour, 62 kilometres over the speed limit. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was arrested due to his extensive history.
The search revealed a syringe, a smoking implement and cannabis. This just proves that our Traffic Police are out there not only looking for people breaking the road rules but they are out there policing all sorts of serious crime. Have you ever thought that drug dealers drive too? The next time you get pulled over by one of our Traffic Police, remember they are out there protecting your community.
“One person drove his vehicle at a speed of 122 kilometres per hour, 62 kilometres over the speed limit.”

Safety Skills • The cane toad discoved at South Hedland
Cane toad makes it to South Hedland in a croak of luck “It is possible that the cane toad may have been inadvertently transported here in freight from a toad infested area either interstate or in the east Kimberley region of Western Australia,” she said. In Western Australia, cane toad populations are present in and around
Kununurra, with breeding occurring in irrigation areas. Anyone who finds a suspected cane toad should isolate the animal and report the sighting to the DEC cane toad hotline immediately on 1800 44 WILD (9453).

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) is reminding communities in the Pilbara to remain vigilant following the discovery of a live cane toad at a South Hedland residence. The cane toad was found by Damien Jilley who promptly contacted the department through the cane toad hotline. He was advised to capture the toad to ensure it could be correctly identified as a cane toad. Damien of South Hedland said he had just arrived home from work when he noticed his dog jump back while chasing a frog around the pool. “I went over and found that it was a funny looking frog so I went and looked it up on the internet,” he said. Damien said he suspected it was a cane toad but wanted to make sure it was not a native frog. “I thought I’d ring DEC and see what they had to say, we sent some photos through to them and they confirmed it was a cane toad,” he said. The DEC came to collect the toad, which Damien described as motley coloured, structured and ugly. The toad had structured, raised eyes and what Damien describes as an “M” shaped head. Damien’s advice to any one in the Pilbara that might come across an odd looking amphibian is to investigate it to see what you can find out about the species. Damien added, “Who knows? It might be a new type of frog and you might get it named after you”. Local wildlife officers will this week inspect the area for any other possible toads. DEC State Cane Toad Initiative program coordinator Corrin Everitt said they are yet to determine how the individual arrived in the area.

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor, I have lived in Karratha for four years and seen the town grow and change. But one service that is lacking big time is a bus transit system. Our cab services also need upgrading with more cabs on the road. New roads are being built, but I see no facilities being made available for public transport. A bus service would give people who live here choices to take them to work, the shops or the beach. I find it amazing we are being told how this town will be a city in 2015 of 50,000 people, and yet we have no services for commuting. I can’t believe that a fast growing town that is very expensive for rent and rate payers, still has no services. I feel it is very insulting that it’s assumed we all have two cars. Some people might not have drivers licences for what ever reason, and yet are expected to get to work by relying on someone else. There is no shortage of buses around, but none are
being put to use picking up members of the public. As for our taxis, I have most times waited up to two hours for a cab and that is both ways. I am not the only one with that complaint. Sometimes they don’t pick you up at all. Where is the service in that? So if we can’t catch a taxi and there are no buses, what is available? I was reading the other day how police are very disappointed about the rising number of drink driving and speeding charges. I think that is bad, but I also think, in being fair to our community, there hasn’t been anything put in place so people can take an alternative form of transport. Theses services need to be up and running all day, everyday. When all these are put in place and people have choices, perhaps there will be less people drinking and driving. The town needs these services. Susy Cowlishaw

The Pilbara Poet
by Elise Batchelor
Choosing between Meatloaf and a hot pie with sauce seemed to be a no brainer for the AFL masses. So the legend of UK music got the bat out of hell out of town and made way for Aussie talent.I don’t know, I love a bit of Meatloaf, but Paul Kelly’s leaps and bounds from that, for sure. So, with our national poet in song declared as centre stage hero, I propose a toast to National Poetry Week!
The Melbourne Mistrel Two out of three it ain’t that bad, Still, one out of three is worse. But one out of one with your Voice undone is more than a tad perverse. For he came out claiming his bacon Squished tight in a meatloaf tin But he left bled raw, with the crowds all sore With the fella with his motorbike din. Oh poor old Marvin Lee Aday, All peas and corn baked meat, Perhaps it was just your accent mate Or your keyless, tone deaf treat. But gotta love a little bit of fortitude In the middle of the MCG. When you’re busting your pants doing the meatloaf dance And you sound like you need to do a wee.
Like a bat outta hell he was outta there With a putter and a final spurt. Not quite bad taste in the finals race But less than you might call pert. So here we go with the meaty goss Of the AFL final for this year. It’s old news, maybe, but ooh yeah baby, We’re in for a treat you hear. For he likes a bit of gravy on his roast each year Whether Christmas or whatever the ditty and he sings sweet songs about blokes gone wrong and clocks in the middle of the city.
Yep, everyone’s got a bit of Paul in them, He’s the poet of the land we love. Cause he’s brave cause he sings about doing dumb things And we thank the Lord above. That come finals day Mr Kelly will strum His guitar as a minstrel of the mob. And you betcha me mate will think the whole show’s great Shoving chips and gravy into his gob.

Rinehart’s Roy Hill Iron Ore Project takes first steps By Ben Leahy
December this year.
Gina Rinehart’s multibillion Roy Hill Iron Ore project, located 270 kilometres south of Port Hedland, has taken concrete steps on the way to becoming an operational facility.
The first stage involves construction of 400 rooms, with the remaining dwellings and a central facilities precinct planned for completion by August 2013.
Contractor Brookfield Multiplex recently commenced construction of the accommodation village at Roy Hill, with the first stage of the $190 million facility expected to be in operation by
The accommodation precinct will span 78 hectares and feature central sporting and entertainment amenities, including a gymnasium and swimming pool, and administration and management centres.
The world’s richest woman Gina Rinehart has long held dreams of completing the Roy Hill Iron Ore project, which is currently expected to cost $9.5 billion and become one of Australia’s biggest iron-ore-producing mines. Brookfield Multiplex is also a major investor in the region, currently working on engineering and infrastructure projects in Western Australia valued at close to $600 million.

Agricultural pioneer shares secrets with Pilbara pastoralists By Ben Leahy Agricultural pioneer Peter Andrews shared his experiences in land management with Pilbara station owners at a talk held at Yarrambie Station. Andrews attracted national attention in 2005 after featuring in a series of episodes on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Australian Story television programme documenting how he turned degraded land on his former New South Wales property into a fertile farm. Mr Tim Wiley, Pilbara coordinator for non-governmental organisation Rangelands NRM, says Andrews has gained insights into the natural functioning of the Australian landscape that leave him almost without peer. “Peter Andrews is acknowledged as having converted his degraded high-salinity land at Tarwyn Park in NSW into a fertile, drought-resistant estate,” Wiley said. Andrews, through a process known as Natural Sequence Farming, was able to stop rain water from rushing through his property and eroding soil by reintroducing natural landscape patterns that retain water and redistribute it across his farm. Rangelands Coordinator Wiley said the principles Andrews used on his NSW property are highly relevant to
the Pilbara because of the region’s rainfall pattern. “The bulk of the rain [in the Pilbara] comes in our wet season from cyclones,” Wiley said. “So when we get rain from a cyclone, you have a maximum amount of water coming through the landscape in massive floods, causing massive erosion.” “It is either drought or flood, it never rains, it pours.” Wiley said that while some management practices have to led to ponds and wetlands in the Pilbara draining away and creating soil erosion, waterways were critical to helping retain water from flash floods so it can be put to use in the landscape. “Peter [Andrews] was able to get [local landowners] to understand how natural landscapes, hydrology and drainage and river systems work,” Wiley said. “This led to plenty of discussion among the pastoralists there about how they could take that home and apply it on their own properties.” Wiley said Rangelands NRM will support pastoralists who decide to implement principles from the Natural Sequencing Farming process and that they hope to bring Andrews back in the future to further consult with local landowners.

• A sacred kingfisher had made their way to the water holes immediately below the iconic Pannawonica Hill, which form part of the Robe River system. These pools are fed by artesian fresh water springs and support 12 varieties of native fish, according to Rio Tinto Environmental Officer Kaylene Parker. The experts gave everyone a briefing of the job at hand and divided them into three groups. By lunchtime the groups had recorded 48 bird species in a three-hour session. A further seven species were added during a one hour visit to the larger, nearby ‘Japanese Pool’. Rio Tinto environmental staff gave
short talks on the monitoring and preservation of the Robe River, and an overview of Birdlife Western Australia activities and objectives was delivered along with a subtle promotion for the possible establishment of a BirdLife WA Pilbara sub branch. Prizes were awarded, in the form of bird identification books, and given to the most enthusiastic child in each of the three groups and a pair of binoculars were given for the closest guess to the total species count at the end of the day. The children finished the morning with a swim in the crystal clear waters of the Robe River. Overall, it was a highly successful event.

Man saved after boat sinks, opens up to thank rescuers By Tamara Binamat A Port Hedland man whose fishing trip took an unexpected and dangerous turn last week, has opened up about his experience to give thanks to the many people involved in the rescue. Marco Fraschetti, a keen diver and fisherman, was on a boat with two other men when their boat sank overnight. Marco said he woke to his mate calling “There’s water in the boat, there’s water in the boat”. After the boat sank, the men swam one and half kilometres to Bedout Island. “There was a moment there when I thought I couldn’t swim any more and the guys carried me,” he said. “It was a bad situation.”
“They took me back first as they only had room for one, I was probably the most messed up,” said Marco. “They came back for the other two then we had our quick checkups to see if we were alright.” Marco and a team of helpers returned to the site the next day to salvage equipment and the boat. “We recovered the boat and some spear-guns, cameras and all our dive gear,” he said. The men towed the boat to shallow water and sunk it again. “Nine o’clock that [same] night we jumped on a big fishing boat with all our dive gear, it took us seven hours to get [back to the boat],” Marco recalled. “We found it again, floated
it, towed it up to the boat and picked the back up with a crane. “We put the pumps in and gushed all the water out, floated it then towed it home.” Marco said his advice to boaters is to get an EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacon) and prepare properly before heading on a journey. “Definitely make life jackets more accessible,” he said. “The boat goes over and you’ve got no time to get them. “Even the safety life jackets that you can wear, I reckon if you’ve got one, wear it.” Marco would like to thank all those involved in the rescue. “A big thanks, everyone has been fantastic. Nothing was a drama, it was so easy to get help.“

A great group of biking enthusiasts braved punctures to tour the town and visit a variety of gardens generously opened up for their observation.
This event will feature free food and activities for the kids, and gives everybody the chance to come down to the site, have a look around and join in.
The day was organised to promote biking and the use of the bike paths spanning most of Karratha, from Nickol West right through to Bulgarra. Scott Cycles also contributed to the event by coming along to present a free workshop and show everybody the quick way to fix a puncture – a frequent hazard for Pilbara cyclists. The gardens ranged from a native waterwise garden filled with sculptures and artistic arrangements to a highly functional kitchen garden overflowing with herbs and produce.
More plants are expected to be planted during Saturday’s Open Day at the garden.
Sustainable September features a whole series of other events, including the ‘Consumed’ art competition and exhibition at the Visitor’s Centre, school’s recycled art competition, a sustainable energy evening seminar and the Open Home Day for a sustainable house at 2 Gecko Circle, Tambrey (10-1pm on Sunday 9). Bob said if people don’t have these skills, it can be life threatening. “If you’re down to your last couple of litres of water don’t sip it because sipping doesn’t cure dehydration, and that has killed people,” he said. “You should drink cupfuls rather than sips.

By Courtney Bertling Big Brother dropped their biggest bombshell on the housemates last Sunday night, when they were convinced there is a second house full of rival housemates. House 1’s weekly task was to compete against the fake ‘House 2’ in a series of challenges, which let the conspiracy theories fly. Conspiracy theories With another house to compete with, ‘House Two’ was on everyone’s lips with conspiracy theories being brought up as one of the dinner topics. “I’m not big on conspiracy theories, they are pretty much to me like a big gossip section,” George said.

“Everyone is putting out these ideas, I’d rather listen to them than be a part of them. “But they bring good stories, makes the time go by, that’s how I see it.” The friend zone They may have shared a kiss or two, or 10, but it seems that George has banished Princess Layla to the friend zone. “I don’t want to keep taking it further every day,” George said, saying that Layla was a nice girl and he didn’t want to hurt her. “I can’t ever imagine falling for someone [in the house].” While talking to Ray on Wednesday, Ray said he thought it would be an advantage to have a
relationship in the house, and is disappointed there doesn’t seem to be any suitable girls left to partner with. “Layla would definitely be the best chick in the house to hook up with,” Ray tells George the public can relate to Layla. George confesses he didn’t like Layla at the start and felt she was snobby. He says he originally liked Sarah – but not anymore. “Her positivity’s actually annoying me now,” states George. Sausages for George Michael, George and Sarah were delegated to do the food shopping for the house at the beginning of the week, although both Michael and George missed

out on their personal items. When the housemates received the food, George hatched a plan to cook up some sausages. “I’m starving,” he said. “I feel like some meat. What do you reckon boys, sausages?” Ben stepped in with a reminder on the HM-set food rules: “People are eating some stuff of their own right now, but no-one’s having dinner tonight”. When George explained that he and Michael missed out on their personal orders, Benjamin did a complete 360 degrees turn-around, insisting that the pair eat their sausages pronto before offering, “George, do you want some of my muesli, just for now?”

It can’t be helped, but sometimes our health lets us down. Whilst the tax office can’t help with the physical pain, at least there is some support for the financial pain of medical expenses. It is often forgotten that you can claim a tax rebate if your families medical expenses exceeds a certain amount in any financial year. Eligible medical expenses include pharmaceuticals, doctors visits, surgery and hospital costs, dental and optical expenses, including prescription glasses and corrective eye surgery. Even hearing aids and guide dog expenses are eligible. For the last financial year, you are eligible for a tax rebate if your out of pocket medical expenses exceeded $2,060. This tax rebate can be claimed in your tax return. As of July 1, 2012 eligibility for this rebate is means tested. So for families earning over $168,000, or singles earning over $84,000, you will need over $5,000 worth of medical expenses to qualify for the rebate. If your family is incurring significant medical expenses in this current financial year, it may be worth discussing the medical expenses rebate with your accountant. The galah, also known as roseate parrot or pink and grey, is one of the most common and widespread parrots, and can be found in open country in almost all parts of mainland Australia.
The term galah is derived from gilaa, a word found in Yuwaalaraay and neighbouring Aboriginal languages.
“We wish the artists every success on the night and look forward to seeing what inspires them most about our vibrant community and lifestyle,” said Ms Gray.

The colours of the juveniles are duller than the adults. Juveniles have greyish chests, crowns, and crests, and they have brown irises and whitish bare eye rings, which are not carunculated.
It is still uncertain whether they are native to Tasmania, though they are common today. They are common in some metropolitan areas, for example Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne, and common-to-abundant in open habitats that offer at least some scattered trees for shelter. Flocks of galahs will often congregate and forage on foot for food in open grassy areas. Three subspecies are usually recognised. There is slight variation in the colours of the plumage and in the extent of the carunculation of the eyerings between three subspecies. The south-eastern form is clearly distinct from the paler-bodied Western Australian nominate subspecies, although the extent and nature of the central hybrid zone remains

Most pet birds outside Australia are the south-eastern form. The third form found right across the northern part of the continent, tends to be a little smaller. The Galah nests in tree cavities. The eggs are white and there are usually two or five in a clutch. The eggs are incubated for about 25 days, and both the male and female share the incubation.

• Heath Harnden and Sharelle with the winners from Karratha Primary School Huge iron-ore trains, stretching up to 2.4 kilometres, are among the most celebrated symbols of the harsh beauty of the Pilbara region. But like all heavy machinery, they can also be dangerous, and last month Rio Tinto reached out to a record number of Pilbara primary school children to impart rail safety tips as part of national Rail Safety Week 2012. Rio Tinto general manager of Railway Operations, Heath Harnden, said more than 700 school children from 12 schools in the Pilbara showed

“We were impressed by the quality and quantity of the entries and these demonstrated a good level of understanding about rail risks,” Mr Harnden said. Rail employees presented prizes to the best entries at each school assembly, including an E-reader for the first prize-winner. They also reminded students about rail safety, emphasising how
big Rio Tinto heavy haul trains are by comparing ore cars to objects such as swimming pools. Their rail safety tips included slowing down when approaching rail crossings, never trying to race trains and never going near stationary trains and wagons, as they are remotely coordinated and could move at any time. Rio Tinto owns the largest private rail, heavy freight network in Australia, which is currently expanding in line with Rio Tinto’s goal to transport 353 million tonnes per annum by mid 2015.

“I know it’s a little way down the track but one day I want to live and work in a city like Melbourne,” Isabelle says. “Although I love my job in Kununurra, I can’t wait to travel and see Australia. That’s one of the bonuses of the trade – if you’re well trained, you can find work anywhere.” Right now, however, Isabelle is happy to learn as much as she can on the job and in class. “As a first year apprentice, I’ve learned a lot on the job already, but this training teaches me new or different ways of doing things,” she says. “I love the fact I get to be creative every day and we can style and colour each other’s hair. You can actually craft a totally different look every morning if you feel like it!” Isabelle’s lecturer, Larissa Cromb, agrees the profession is a great career choice for artistic types. “Aside from straight salon work, hairdressing offers other opportunities, such as the chance to work in fashion or in photo shoots and hair shows,” Larissa explains. “As Isabelle said, it’s also a ticket to the world, so you can work anywhere in
Australia or overseas.” Larissa adds that a Hairdressing Certificate from Pilbara Institute comes with a virtual guarantee of success. “Australian qualifications are highly respected internationally,” Larissa says. “Once you’re overseas, salons fall over themselves trying to hire you once they know you’re from Australia! That’s why our focus at Pilbara Institute is a combination of solid foundation knowledge and practical skills. With that emphasis on quality, you can’t go wrong!” Larissa is no international travel.

Stick Insects

By Jennifer Fox While walking down the footpath recently, I came upon this very interesting creature that I couldn’t resist picking up to bring home for a photograph.
Cooper Nealan Drabble August 3, 2012 Kelly and Luke, with big sister Keira, are excited to announce the safe arrival of the latest addition to their family, Cooper Nealan Drabble.
While I don’t know much about insects I do know enough to realise this was a stick insect and not a mantis.
Born at Nickol Bay Hospital on August 3, 2012, and weighing 7 pounds 10 ounces.
The difference is that Mantis has bent front legs and huge eyes.
We’d like to thank all the wonderful midwives at NBH for their care and support, in particular, Nicole for delivering our beautiful baby boy.
They also have a triangular head that they can turn from side to side and are carnivorous. There are about 150 species of stick insects in Australia. This also includes the leaf variety.
either sway gently like a twig, or fall to the ground where they are almost impossible to see among the leaf litter. Some species have a secondary surprise defence mechanism of hissing and kicking with spiny hind legs or sudden opening of brightly coloured wings. Females are usually larger than the males and some species can lay fertile eggs without actually mating. If this happens all the offspring will be female but if she does choose a male her offspring will be both male and female. Females lay from 100 to 1000 eggs.
Sizes range from a couple of centimetres long up to 25 centimetres.
Females can live up to two years while the poor blokes only live 6 to 8 months.
The one in the photo was about 15 centimetres.
I suppose he can be grateful she doesn’t eat him like other insect species do.
They have excellent camouflage and their colour can vary from green to brown. Most live in trees while a few are ground dwellers and all are vegetarian. All are active at night to avoid predation by birds, but they are also eaten by lizards and mammals. If they are disturbed they will
Interestingly, they are very popular pets in Australia and can be purchased online. My work colleague recently purchased some leaf insects for her daughter. The young ones were sent via Australia post. Hers eat gum leaves and look exactly like clusters of brown leaves.

Angel of Cuisine For the first time this year, I went for a workout on my own last night.
after putting my kids back in school just deciding to get on with it.
Yet it was great to just get out there and be in your own headspace with music in your ears pushing yourself.
I often walk on my own, but last night was a proper workout. It is so good to push yourself and test your limits. Don’t wait for someone to suggest you do pushups or situps. Set your own goals and smash them, it will make you feel so good – even if it’s just jogging between this light-post and that one.
That is when you really feel personal power and achievement. I am a great supporter of working out with friends like I have done every time previously in 2012. It is so productive. After my second baby, I put weight back on up to 80 kilograms. But I lost 20 kilograms of that in a few months

the way. If you see a set of stairs, run up and down them. When you come across a change in terrain, take it on. Enjoy your music and concentrate on being safe, then set small goals along the way and you can turn what was only going to be a walk into a full fledged no-cost workout. See what you can do this week to change it up. Go on, get out there – by yourself if you have to – and test your limits. Have a healthy week.
Recipe of the week When I am trying to keep food healthy and tasty, I like to think of the flavours I want and then experiment with ways I can eat it. This recipe is a great mix of tasty ingredients that can be reworked a thousand ways.

Healthy Tips and Tricks If you want a lean and clean diet but struggle to give up cheese, then its best to choose strong varieties and grate them in minimal quantities as a treat. There is so much, low fat, low taste cheese out there that just adds rubber to your diet. Don’t buy into it. It is better to go with high quality, bitey cheese and only use a little rather than use the mass produced options. Think of it as a welcome treat.

get into safari suits and the ladies get into those psychedelic frocks. Can anyone play the organ with the one finger method? That’s right, anyone can have a go. The main thing is to choose which finger you are going to start with. Fans can also purchase your newly released debut album The Touch of You. Yes, my goodness, I think the album has been an absolute trendsetter in the world of organs. It’s done with the Aurora Classic, which is the little Hammond that I will be bringing up to Karratha, and I think it might do quite well in bingo and dance circles. And people can take your organ home? That’s right, this is an organ demonstration and this organ is for sale. My Hammond Aurora will go to the highest bidder. I’ve got a whole container load of Aurora’s my Organ E Superstore. I’ve had them since 1978 so I’ve got to offload a few or I won’t be able to d afford the fuel back to Adelaide. But Barry, isn’t the golden age of the organ past us? My goodness no, I think we are bringing it back in leaps and bounds. I was recently on the BBC television in Scotland, and, I tell you what, the young ones were going gaga over Barry and his organ.

With his pioneering one-finger organ playing method, Barry has wooed audiences on ABC television’s Spicks and Specks programme, toured the UK and even played the mainstage at festivals like Sydney’s Homebake. But Barry does more than just coax sultry sounds from his organ. He brings groovy ’70s-style charisma to the stage with bejewelled fingers, sexy safari suits and a moustache that would do Dennis Lillee proud. Karratha residents can join in the fun at his hilarious show from September 20 to 22 as part of the Red Earth Arts Festival. Ben Leahy spoke to Barry as he was locking the doors of his shop, the Organ Superstore in Sunnyside, Adelaide, and began the journey to Karratha in his trusty Toyota Crown. Barry, were you a born entertainer? My goodness, I’m not too sure if I was a born entertainer. But I was first introduced to the organ in a church in Adelaide, the city of churches. It was by the organist Mr Murchison, who was a friend of my dear departed mother Nancy, and I’ve never looked back. Now I’ve got a whole collection of organs and there’ll all for sale at my superstore. What was so special about touching the organ that first time in church? I think it was the depth of the sound really. I mean, those huge church pipes. You can’t go back after a huge pipe. And as a teenager, once I developed my one-finger method [for playing the organ], I realised that it was community music. It was powerful, something everyone could engage in, and it really only took one finger and there was instant joy. What can we expect in Karratha? There will be plenty of audience participation in the organ playing. [In terms of music] there will be some old time covers and favourites. Expect Bossa Nova, and Blues rock for rthhard rockers – it will be a real rth all those arth compositions Ea gotten Ea mix. There will also be someEoriginal –dI’ve a bit arty in my older d the Campari with ice d days. Maybe that is to do with that I’m always consuming in Adelaide. How should locals get in the mood? Well, in some towns, people have even managed to head off to the Op-Shop and get in costume for my performances. Barry Morgan is the patron saint of the safari suit. It is that late-1970s early-’80s style of let’s-get-together-and-groove. So yes, young people

Returning to Karratha after four years, Deep Blue brought their new show ‘Who Are You’ to 2012 Red Earth Arts Festival. ‘Who Are You’ is all about the music and the moments that shape our lives. It takes the audience on a journey from birth to childhood, teenage angst, falling in love and much more. It showed how you can discover your identity through music. The show shuffled between tracks by Radiohead, Queen, Corelli, Daft Punk and Deep Blue originals with lush strings, banging beats and rock ‘n’ roll. The audience went crazy when the orchestra announced after many requests that they would play ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen. Asking for some audience participation to help with the singing, local and Queen die-hard, Joanna Jurgowiak jumped onto the stage to sing one of her favourite songs with the orchestra. “It was crazy, I’ve never done

anything like that before,” she said. “It was amazing, the orchestra made me feel so welcome. “They are so unique, I’ve never heard an orchestra like them before. They invite audience members to participate and interact with the music.” From a horse playing the drums to artists walking on stilts, riding a unicycle, jump-rope skipping, all the while still playing their instruments, there was always something new to keep the audience entertained. Local Guilia Jance said that the orchestra were funky and fabulously entertaining. “They were not old and boring, they kept right up with the tunes,” she said. There were a few new fans made during the night, including Graeme McFarland, who bought four CDs and one DVD during the interval. “They are able to get a crowd going with instruments you wouldn’t expect to be played together,” he said. With a performance as dynamic and entertaining as it is rule breaking, locals caught a truly innovative and revolutionary musical experience. Being able to play instruments is one thing, but being able to play instruments while performing choreographed dances, all in time, is another.

GAWTHORNE DRIVE
Crawford Realty pulled off a huge night last weekend when they held their first Masquerade Ball, raising money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. About 140 people turned up in beautiful gowns, handsome tuxes and gorgeous masks, on a night that raissed more than $570,000. Crawford Realty general
manager Mark Pages-Oliver said they are still waiting on donations to roll in but are confident in the money they raised. “Garnett Skuthorp donated over $500,000 to the RFDS and he was a big supporter of the Charity Ball,” Mark said. Mark described the night as a fantastic showing of community support for the great work the RFDS does. “I was impressed by the $10,000 raised on the night from only 140 people, they really dug deep,” he said. “Ernie Dingo was a great
to get involved. “It will really be a ‘watch this space’ event!” Crawford Realty believes it is important to be involved with the community, as it’s a way of giving something back. “The Dalai Lama summed it up perfectly ‘our prime purpose in life is to help people’,” Mark said. “As professional agents we want to help outside of our chosen profession as well.”

MC (very funny) and Daren Reid and the Soul City Groove were fantastic. “I have never seen tables at a Ball so empty and the dance floor so full.” So if you missed out on all the fun, don’t stress, Crawford Realty are already planning ideas for next year’s ball. “The bar is set high but we know next year will be even better!” Mark said. “We have already received word from some of the existing sponsors who are excited about the possibility of next year’s event and some attendees are now very keen

the town a good night, Adam has secured a place in the annual, fastest growing music festival in Australia. “I still wonder if it is all a dream,” he said. “To be able to play at Stereosonic is a huge thing, it is literally the biggest electric
dance festival.” “I can definitely say that I would be nothing without the support of the locals and my mates.” He may already have a huge following in town, but Adam admits that he never expected his DJ career to take off so quickly. “I’ve only been DJing for about three years, I just can’t believe it’s happened so quickly,” he said. “I believe in putting others first before myself, so I would throw out heaps of freebies, and I guess it has finally paid off.” “When you out others before yourself, you get recognised a lot more than when you succeed because you’ve worked that little bit harder to make everyone happy.” “It’s so amazing, nothing is better than playing to a crowd, whether it be 10 or 10,000 people, the response from the crowd that you receive is what matters.” “You feed off the crowd’s energy.” Currently in Sydney until September 17, with five gigs lined up, including a threehour set at Electric Playground, Adam would like to thank all of the locals who have supported him and helped get him where he is today. To keep up to date with Adam, search ‘Dj Adam Hankinson’ on Facebook.

Shaky FMG cuts jobs, expansions, and assets Fortescue Metals Group has deferred some expansions, sold assets, and cut hundreds of jobs in an effort to stay profitable. In a statement yesterday FMG said it had cut $4.6 billion off forecast spending for FY2013. The main savings will come from deferring completion of a fourth berth at Herb Elliott Port and delaying development of the Kings deposit. Staff numbers and operating costs will also be reduced, with FMG focusing on cutting costs at the Cloudbreak mine. FMG CEO Nev Power said the cutbacks would allow the company to stay flexible and it would resume delayed expansions when “iron ore prices return to more sustainable levels”. “We are confident that the underlying fundamentals of the Chinese economy are strong and we believe iron ore prices will rebound in the medium term,” he said. “However, we have moved quickly to strengthen the balance sheet.” In a separate statement today FMG also confirmed it had sold the power station at its Solomon mine in the Pilbara to a subsidiary of TransAlta for $US300 million. Power said the sale was “consistent with the company’s focus on core infrastructure” and represented a key step in its Pilbara expansions. “It was always our intention to divest the Solomon power station to an established owner and operator of power generation assets,” he said.
The cutbacks come as ratings agency Moody’s continues to review FMG for a possible credit rating downgrade. In a recent investment note Moody’s said FMG’s depressed operating cash flow had combined with falling iron ore prices to raise “material challenges”. Speaking to ABC Rural after the cutbacks WA Mines Minister Norman Moore said he was confident FMG and the wider iron ore sector would return to strong growth. “FMG have a number of debt issues, which relate to the very high borrowings they’ve had to undertake because of the massive growth they’ve undergone,” he said. “However, all of the commentators and all of the producers I talk to suggest that this is a reasonably temporary aberration, and we’ll go back to growth in due course.” Source: Australian Mining

GM and Election of New Committee The Tom Price and Paraburdoo Business Association (TPPBA) has a new chairperson and a new committee ready to build on a strong resurgence in membership numbers and interest in issues affecting local businesses in the region. The new committee was elected on August 22 at TPPBA’s Annual General Meeting and Business at Sunset event, which was hosted by TPPBA member Gumala Enterprises. Guest speakers at the event included Brian Donald (Accommodation and Town Management, Rio Tinto) and Daryl Smith (General Manager, Gumala Enterprises). The TPPBA has held a number of successful events over the past 12 months which has led to the strong resurgence in membership numbers. Outgoing Chairperson Bob Stump said that it has been a remarkable twelve months. “Local business is embracing the concept of a strong business association and ensure its growth into the future by joining and participating in the events presented,” Bob said. Newly elected committee members include chairperson Sarah Kemp (Smart Future Consulting), vice chair Rhys Edwards (Muzzys Home Hardware), secretary Belinda Main (Mister & Sister), treasurer Leonie Bailey (Leonie Bailey
• Fortescue Rail

• Rhys Edwards (Vice Chair), Muzzys Home Hardware, MSarah Kemp (Chairperson) Smart Future Consulting, R- Belinda Main (Secretary) Mister and Sister Chartered Accountant). Incoming chairperson Sarah Kemp said that the TPPBA has an important role to play in supporting and promoting local businesses. “The recent census data highlighted that in Tom Price and Paraburdoo there is approximately one small to medium enterprise (SME) for every 50 people,” said Sarah. “When compared to the WA state average of one SME for every 10 people this represents a large market failure considering the level of investment in the region as a result of the current mining boom, and will impact on the long term future economic prosperity of the region.” The TPPBA is an independent organization representing the interest of businesses in the region. It aims to create business, prosperity and community pride in Tom Price and Paraburdoo.

Hip-hop battle zone ready Medal Jam is not the latest breakfast conserve – it’s the Pilbara’s hip-hop battle! Over 50 hip-hop mad Hedland kids took part in a free break dancing workshop sponsored by The Hood last weekend. The region’s best B-girls and B-boys are preparing for a selffunded trip to Perth to battle the best the city slickers in Perth can offer. “We are ready to battle and will bring it for Hedland, watch out for some krump and crazy floor work,” said Sasha Whitehurst and Nicholas Armstrong from Hedland Senior High School. “Hip-hop is great for selfconfidence and you can’t get it wrong, you just have to go with the flow of music,” said Relma BuleTurner, The Hood organiser. Brendan Burns from Zourock Crew came to the region for the second time in as many months to facilitate the workshops and impart his skills, having recently competed in the Australian Red Bull BC1
Championships. He also spent time with South Hedland Primary School to inspire and encourage students who were selected for the workshop on the basis of their exemplary commitment to school. Tim Turner from The Hood was seeking to support South Hedland Primary and other schools in Hedland by using hip hop to inspire and excite the children. He is working to establish a WA Hip-hop Alliance that connects a range of large and small hip-hop initiatives across the Pilbara and Western Australia. Hip-hop is a powerful force of pop culture having enormous influence over children across the world. The idea behind WA Hip-hop Alliance is to use this influence to support positive messages, role models, and create exciting opportunities for education. Hawks soar into Port Hedland softball grand final By Bob Neville
bring home three more runners.
The Hawks secured a place in the 2012 Port Hedland Softball Association’s A-Grade grand final, with pitcher Fiona Lockyer sinking the hopes of opponents, the Pirates, with a match-winning effort from the pitchers mound last weekend.
She also added a triple and three singles for a perfect five-from-five to score six runs-batted-in (RBI).
Jets’ pitcher Kylie Parker came out on top of opposing pitcher, Kerry Franklin, by tossing-up five strike outs and allowing just three hits.
Marisa Bradshaw and Jaymi Lockyer both picked up two hits apiece as the Hawks earned 13 safe hits for the day.
She also played a major role with the bat, scoring a double-RBI single in the third innings.
The Cougars will meet the Hawks reserve team in the preliminary final after the Hawks crunched the Jets reserves 15nil.
Lockyer struck out seven Pirates in her five-innings pitching stint and tipped in with a solo home run in the opening innings as the Hawks side scored freely in a 14 runs to five victory.
The Pirates got on the scoreboard through Nicole Wylie’s double and Rachael Green’s two RBI, but it was not enough and now they will need to regroup for their preliminary final with the Jets.
Kirsty Kubala led the Jets batting, scoring three times from just three-at-bats, while Vanessa Wainwright and Natalie Anderson collected a hit apiece.
The Port Hedland Softball Association A-grade and A-reserve individual awards were also handed out in a function in the evening.
League-leading home run hitter and Association best and fairest, Stacey Derschow, launched another bomb into the outfield in the Hawks fifth innings to
The Jets earned their passage to the preliminary final with a down-to-the-wire four-runs-to-two, seven innings win over the Raiders.
The reserves semi-finals saw the Rebels march into the grand final with a resounding 22 runs-to-seven victory over the Cougars as reserves competition Fairest and Best, Marla Frolichi, crashed

the night entertainment, the Australian Jamboree might sound like a giant excuse to party, but Michelle Christensen, a committee member with the 3rd Karratha Scout Group, says the experience teaches the children to be independent.
“It’s a good life experience because they get to do activities without their parents hovering around, and they get to learn from kids from around Australia,” Christensen said.

Scouts Australia says the Australian Jamboree provides fun and dynamic activities
that promote the physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual development of the young attendees. Christensen added that fundraising activities by the Karratha scouts, which have included rubbish collection drives, sausage sizzles and car washes, promote community spirit by pushing the kids to get out and interact with town residents. The Karratha Scout Group hailed their latest raffle a huge success thanks to the generous donation by Rio Tinto of a $500 voucher for the first prize-winner and a range of further prizes donated by local businesses.
“Held every three years, the Australian Jamboree is a chance for scouts from Australia and overseas to meet each other and participate in activities ranging from rock climbing and archery to even carpentry and landscaping.”

Wasps are Rugby League premiers after thrilling final By Eugene Evans
His bone-crunching hit drew raucous cheers from home crowd fans, and inspired the Wasps’ players into action. The Wasps were able to regain possession following a series of fierce tackles when prop Live popped up again. Despite having runners outside, Live ignored all of them and instead relied on his prop instincts to put his head down and go it alone over the try line to help the Wasps retake the lead. In a heart-stopping final three minutes, the Hawks held possession but were unable to get across the line, leaving the Wasps as Premiers with a 26-24 victory in one of the leagues most memorable grand finals. Christou Benjamin from the Wasps was awarded the Marvin Whittle medal for best player on the ground.

The Wickham Wasps are Pilbara Rugby League Association premiers, surviving a thrilling late charge by the Port Hedland Hawks to win the 2012 grand final in Wickham last weekend. The clash held a sense of history, with the two teams having met in the grand final four times in the past 22 years – the Hawks winning twice previously and the Wasps once. This rivalry was celebrated before the opening whistle with former Wasps player Eugene Evans and Trevor Foot from the Hawks, who played in the club’s first grand final clash 20 years ago, carrying the Premiership shield onto the field. When the game got underway, the Hawks were first on the board, scoring and converting within the opening three minutes. The Wasps struck back with two
tries before the Hawks also crossed for their second. As Wasp’s hooker Mikolaj Cherrington began to impose himself on the game, the Wasps scored a third time and took a slender lead into the break. They then came out firing in the second half, scoring back-to-back tries. When club legend Cody Felton crossed for his first try of the season, the Wasps had run out to a commanding 22-10 lead. But when a neck injury forced Wasps on-field general, Duane Evans, from the field with 25 minutes to play, the Hawks seized their chance. They piled on the next three tries to stun the Wasps and silence the home crowd. The Wasps were short on answers until prop Willy Live produced the tackle of the game.

Falcons building a challenge to the mighty Magpies By V Swans Regional Development Manager Clint Degebrodt The first quarter of the West Pilbara Junior Football Association under 18’s match at the Kevin Richards Memorial ground last Friday, could have been renamed the ‘Tyler Sharpe Show’. The young Karratha Falcons’ forward ripped down marks and slotted goals with ease to help his team snatch a four-goal head start on the Karratha Kats early in the game. But despite perfect conditions, the match then settled into a tight, physical tussle with the Kats unable to pull out a surprise victory in their last match of the season, going down to the Falcons 12.16 (88) to 2.3. (15). The Kats were still able to hold their heads high, however, after running hard defensively to slow down the free flowing Falcons and avoid their third successive 100 point defeat. Along with Sharpe, Ethan Burmaz and Elias Dungey were busy for the red and blue in the first quarter as the Falcons closed out the term 4.3 (27) over a scoreless Kats. During the break, caretaker coach and long-term Kats’ servant Murray Levis implored his charges to run harder into defense and be creative going forward, while the Falcons’ Cameron Ling asked for continued pressure and solid decision-making. Back on the park, the Falcon’s Max Payne controlled the ruck and gave his midfielders first use but was unable to prevent the ball rebounding back-and-forth between the 50 metre arcs as each defense spoiled crisply and rebounded with speed. It was only when Jay Berthelson made a bonecrunching tackle to ping his opponent holding the ball and slot the resultant kick through for a major
that the door opened for the Falcons’ scoring. Freddie Clutterbuck of the Kats was able to stem the flow when he was introduced into the game, quickly marking and goaling for his team’s first major. Coach Levi gave the Kats a plan to nullify the Falcons’ run at half time, which saw their rucks and midfield get on top in a messy third quarter. Levis and Featonby’s attacking run and a Josh Blackman goal in the darkness of the dead pocket at the Balmoral Road oval provided the third term highlights. Blackman lined up on such an acute angle that all four goal posts appeared to be touching, yet, somehow, he found a way through the two big sticks. Ben Roach and Chris Hardwick were among the best for the Kats, working tirelessly to marshal their backs, rebound the Falcons’ attack and limit the early dominance of Sharpe. But in the end the Falcons were too strong and can now think about this weekend’s clash against the all-conquering Magpies in what will be a preview of the grand final the following weekend. Tyler Sharpe, Jay Berthelson, Ethan Burmaz and Elias Dungey were solid for the Falcons, while the return to form of Mitch Burden will be welcomed along with the best on ground performance by pocket-sized, clearance expert Phil Khongjeroen. Cody Bradley used his speed to great effect for the Kats with Braden Levis, Harry Featonby, Ben Roach, Ethan Pierra-Heath and Chris Hardwick also very good on the night. The Kats must now turn their attention to season 2013.

into the half-time break with the Kats 7.6 (48) leading the Falcons 1.3 (9). The Falcons came out flying in the second half with gentle giant Thomas Wallace getting angry and taking a strong grab before slotting through his team’s second. McVea scored again for the Falcons after good, hard work by Cronin and Sam Third, while Doggett, Jarrad West, Jacob Rose and Nathan Bell were solid in limiting the Kats dominance. The Kats still managed to add a goal of their own through Crouch, however, and the siren closed the third stanza with the Kats adding 1.3 to the Falcons 3.3. The Kats started the last quarter with the vigour, skill and intensity they had shown in the first and dominated, moving the ball into their forward 50 at will and scoring two coast-to-coast goals against tired opposition. Crouch was busy all match finishing with five goals while Holmes and Goodwin joined in as the dam walls broke for the
Falcons with the Kats adding 6 goals to finish 14.11 (95) against the Falcons 5.10 (40). The Kats best included MyalBrown, Goodwin, Holmes, Crouch, Guthrie, Walker and the best afield Lorne, who hunted the ball and opposition relentlessly. The Falcons best afield, Chad McVae, was ably assisted by Jayden Doggett, Hayden Patching, Jarrad West, Sam Third and Jack Cronin, while Thomas Wallace produced a breakout game to signal his importance to the team in coming years. The Kats now play top of the table Wickham Wolves in the final home-andaway match this weekend in what will be a preview to the Grand Final game the two teams contest the following week. Having wrapped up their 2012 season, the Falcons can look to 2013 with excitement after blooding a number of 12 year olds and giving them a taste of what to expect in the under 15’s next year.

The Karratha Kats have accounted for a spirited Karratha Falcons team in the penultimate round of the West Pilbara Junior Football Associations’ under 15’s competition held last Friday night. With the Falcons unable to make the finals, they were playing for pride in what would be their last hit-out for the season. Yet it was the Kats who came out blazing, Joel Holmes marking strongly and kicking truly to score the first of his team’s four first quarter goals, while Maeva Walker and Matt Lorne worked at full steam in the midfield engine room. James Myal-Brown fed Ben Crouch his first goal with composed ball delivery, before then following up with a major of his own after pouncing on a big spoil by Falcons key back Thomas Wallace. Lachlan Maitland, Hayden Patching and Reece Christianson worked hard without luck for the Falcons, who headed
into the first break with two points on the board versus the Kats on 4.4 (28). The second quarter started as the first finished with Jayden Guthrie of the Kats dominating the ruck and Dylan Goodwin winning contested ball around the middle. Crouch soon sent a clever snap between the posts to have Kattery fans erupting in celebration. They didn’t have to wait long for more excitement with Crouch kicking his third as the Kats took the ball coast-to-coast from the Falcons forward line. The Falcon’s managed their first goal through James Foster-Reed as their midfield players Jayden Doggett, Jack Cronin and Chad McVea slowed the Kats ball movement. When Hayden Patching also stepped up his running, the Falcons were on top. However, fierce defence by Kats Harrison Attard, Chase Rye and Codee Jackson prevented the Falcons from capitalising on their ascendency heading
