Remote Australia in danger of becoming a failed state By Ben Leahy Politicians, mining executives and academics have backed a report launched in Canberra on Monday, September 10 that describes governance in remote Australia as being in a state of “crisis”. Fixing the hole in Australia’s Heartland says that an alarming number of remote Australians feel politicians in Perth and Canberra are not listening to them and warns that the region could become a “failed state”. While remote Australia contributes 65 per cent of Australia’s mineral wealth, many of its communities lack adequate services, are unable to have a meaningful say in the financial management of their regions and experience higher rates of violence. Bruce Walker, project director of remoteFOCUS, the team behind the report, says Australia’s system of centralised government needs radical reworking in remote Australia. “When people live in areas remote from the centres of economic or political power and change comes on them in the form of a mining boom or an intervention in the Northern Territory, they feel they have no say in what is happening,” Walker said. Walker said that over the last 30 years Australian governments have increasingly centralised their operations and this means most decision makers live within 20 kilometres of the coast. But Walker said decisions affecting remote communities need to increasingly be made by or in consultation with people actually living in the regions. He also said there needs to be a clear vision for the future of remote Australia. “We are not calling for more money. We are not calling for a radical change straight away,” Walker said. “We are calling for people to regard remote Australia as a national asset.” Shire of Roebourne Councillor Nicole Lockwood said the report did not condemn the work of “wonderful” individuals working in Perth or the Pilbara but was challenging the system. “It really starts to challenge the fundamental principles of how our democracy is constructed,” Councillor Lockwood said. “But it is not about taking power away from Perth.” “It is about creating a better hub and spoke for decision making so that the politicians in the states are advised and briefed by people who know the local circumstances.” Councillor Lockwood said special initiatives like the state government funding project Royalties for Regions and the Pilbara Development Commission, which she chaired, are great initiatives but came from a reactionary position. She said if health and government services were originally being provided for adequately, then there would have been no need to dress funding up in bright branding like Royalties for Regions. “Rather this kind of funding would be normal, core-business,” she said.

With three years of consultations leading up to the publication of the remoteFOCUS report, it includes a number of Pilbara case studies. It cites the recently postponed Port Hedland Outer Harbour development as an example of the difficulty in balancing mining interests with community aspirations. BHP Billiton will spend as much $19 billion to extend the Outer Harbour with any one-day the port stops working costing between $50 and $60 million. The report noted that the level of investment by BHP Billiton, meant a coalition of local businesses and organisations were struggling to have meaningful input to decisions about the port. The local coalition said this was an ongoing problem because mining companies were able to plan 40-50 years in advance, while town planning relied on government funding committed on a year-to-year or electionto-election basis. They argued this short-term vision deterred private investment into alternative and sustainable industries, universities, innovation, recycling, tourism and food production. Another example in the report, noted that while local business were encouraged to diversify into tourism, Tourism WA was simultaneously closing its regional offices due to a restructuring.

The state tourism body also did not recognise any Pilbara attraction as a “Top 15” developmental priority. RemoteFOCUS project director Walker said his team heard many more complaints from Pilbara residents ranging from the lack of accommodation and healthcare facilities to the impact of fly-in, fly-out workers, who earn their money in the region but spend it elsewhere. Trish Thomson-Harry from remote healthcare providers Frontier Services said these stories are common in the region. Thomson-Harry recalls a lady who had been a resident in Port Hedland for 40-years, but was forced to move to Perth to be near her adult children. The lady told Thomson-Harry that her children had left Port Hedland because they could no longer afford to live there. Walker from remoteFOCUS warns that these kinds of problems are due to failures in governance and could have very serious consequences. “I look overseas to Nigeria and other places where there is significant mining activity in areas where there is significant underdevelopment in the local population,” Walker said. “Then I know the sorts of things that I will be reading about in Australian newspapers in five to 10 years time [unless governance here is improved].”

Alex is participating in the event after seeing her friend raise $3,000 last year in the same fundraiser.

The bartender has only been fundraising for three weeks but has already raised an incredible $2,000.

“I’ve had family that have passed away from cancer,” she said.

Alex’s original goal was to raise $3,000, but after the huge support from Dampier punters and with fundraising efforts to continue until November 9, Alex is raising her target to $5,000.

Community Update Electrical contractors are now connecting houses in Millars Well to the underground network. Prior to connection, and in accordance with Electricity Safety Regulations, all electrical wiring must be inspected to ensure it complies with safety standards. Prior to the inspection taking place, a letter drop will be made in your street to advise that an inspection of your home will be required in approximately two weeks time. At the time of inspection, an electrical contractor will knock on your door and ask if it is a convenient time for them to inspect your house. If there is no fault found, the inspection should take approximately one hour.

• Alex shows off her custom blue cocktail and her donation pot

In the event that the inspectors find any wiring or electrical connections that do not comply with safety standards, Horizon Power is required by law to disconnect power to the affected circuits. The customer is required to contact a licensed electrician to rectify the fault and reconnect power. In some cases, the fault may be rectified on the spot if it is isolated to a faulty appliance. The cost of repairing the fault and reconnection is the responsibility of the property owner.

National financial literacy program rolled out in Roebourne By Tamara Binamat With many Pilbara locals going from social benefits to six-figure mining salaries almost overnight, a local community group is introducing a financial literacy program to help them manage their money. My Moola is a national financial literacy program embracing the diversity of Aboriginal people, but remodelled to suit locals in Roebourne. The national My Moola program has been renamed Waba Garrungu in the Roebourne area, as this name resonates with the local language. In the Ngaluma language, Waba Garrugu means Good Money. Yaandina Family Services brought the program to Roebourne after service workers Maree Pont and Nellie Connors attended training in Shepparton, Victoria. Maree and Nellie initially went to Victoria to talk with the First Nations Foundation, which was looking for service providers to deliver the program in Indigenous communities. Yaandina came on board to present the program in a language the local community understands. Yaandina are currently halfway through the 10-week program, teaching their first group of six young women the interactive program. Workshops include goal-setting, overcoming barriers to success, making money stretch past payday, planning-to-win, looking after your future, internet banking and the hazards of credit, money loans and traps. Maree is delivering the program in Roebourne and says most of the participants are stepping into the workforce for the first time. “We’ve really got their attention, its fantastic to see these girls soaking it all up,” she said. “They’re listening, they’re learning, they’re writing it all down and thoroughly enjoying it.” “They’ve gone from nothing, or being on social benefits, to $5,000 a month. How do you teach someone to budget when they see all this money?” Maree said although the program is in its infancy in Roebourne, she’s seen significant breakthroughs. “One of our ladies was going

to get a credit card, and once I explained the fees, the traps and the charges she decided not to,” she revealed. “She was going to get a credit card just because some other people had one.” Maree feels the course is necessary in the Roebourne community. “These students are going to have a wealth of knowledge and hopefully, the bank account of their dreams,” she said. Chelsea Churnside is enrolled in the course and said she has learnt a lot about managing finances. “So far I’ve learnt to be assertive and to look at the fine print,” she said. Chelsea said this course is important because the community needs to learn to manage their financial situations. “It’s really good because a lot of people around the community don’t really know about that kind of stuff. It’s good that they’re teaching the community.” “I actually budget my money now, and it’s helped me at home.” Chelsea believes the whole community will benefit from the program. Back at Yaandina, Maree has a big vision for My Moola. “It’s been an enlightening experience as these young girls are learning how and what to do with their money and how to save wisely,” she said. “We’re all the learning the ways of money management and how to be able to save and still have fun. “The next step in the journey is to run the course with a group of men entering the work force for the first time. “Then we want to deliver it to the community. That means families can come down,” she said. “Everyone can be involved in it. “Even some of the older people, they’ve gone from being on a pension to $6,000 a month! How do you deal with that? “I would love to see people be able to afford to buy that new car, to be able to afford a new home.” To be part of the Waba Garrugu program contact Yaandina Family Centre on 9182 1172.

Community spirit has been bountiful in the Pilbara in recent times. Beanie Hokianga, of Karratha, wrote to the Pilbara Echo to share her experience, and thank the locals who supported her during a difficult time in her life.

‘Thanks to Karratha for bringing me home’ • Mia and her bandaged teddy and Teddicare card visit Mariana for ‘medicine’

• ‘Dr Jacinta’ prescribes one teddy’s medicine on the Teddicare card

Teddy bears find doctors’ appointments a picnic By Elise Batchelor Fear not, teddy bears of the Pilbara. If the thought of going to see the doctor curls your belly fluff, help is at hand. Medicine students from the Rural Clinical School of Western Australia have been holding “Teddy Bears’ Hospital” clinics in primary schools throughout Port Hedland so pre-schoolers can bring in their teddies for pretend surgeries. Medical student Kyria Laird said the idea is to familiarise young children with doctors and medical equipment so they feel safe when visiting a clinic. “They start off in the waiting room with activities about healthy eating,” she said. “Then they see the doctor, and we’ve got a lot of the same equipment here that they’ll see at a normal doctor’s surgery.” This seemingly simple idea, developed by the fifth-year students as part of the community project they undertake during their rural training year in Port Hedland, has been a huge success, according to Laird. They have visited all pre-primary classes at the Port Hedland and South Hedland primary schools, and found the children –

and teddy bear patients – very receptive to the mock check-up. At the clinics, children had to assemble a teddy skeleton on paper, visit the doctor for teddy to be assessed and receive prescription medication to help teddy get better. Students were able to handle a stethoscope and listen to their hearts, as well as use an otoscope to look into ears and pen-torches to examine eyes. “It’s lovely to see their faces light-up when they can hear their own heart,” Laird said. Pre-primary student Mia took her teddy to see student Mariana Dorkham at the mock nurses’ station and said that her teddy got better when he received a bandage and medicine for his sore arm. “It’s bananas and strawberries and apples,” she said in approval. Port Hedland pre-primary teacher Kiera Tate was among several teachers who raved about the clinics. “I was very impressed with how the medical students spoke to the children, how clearly they explained everything that was happening and how fun it was,” Tate said. “They had great bedside manner.”

I became a single parent after the passing of my partner in 2006. I moved to Karratha in 2008 to see if I could better my situation. My money situation wasn’t the best and being a single mum wasn’t easy. The company I worked for were so supportive, and I will be forever grateful for their help. All I could think about was bringing my family over here to be with me. It wasn’t easy living without my girls but I called them every morning and night to tell them how much I loved them. Rent here was very high, and I couldn’t afford a house on my own. I also wasn’t sure I would settle here in Karratha. It was 2011 and my eldest daughters final year of school. She just wanted to work and save so I said to her ‘OK I will get a house, and we will stay here in Karratha because I know you could get work here’. My eldest daughter had it all planned; she had her formal on Tuesday, September 20 and graduation was on Thursday, September 22. She had got her nails done and she had the most gorgeous dress. Monday was the last day I ever spoke to my eldest daughter. On Tuesday morning at 2am I got the phone call, she had passed away suddenly. My world felt like it ended in one phone call. My brother, sister, sister in-law and friends came to be with me until I flew out of Karratha early that morning. That same morning I told everyone I

wasn’t coming back. What was I coming back for? My reason for staying was my girl and the start to her new life. But then my friends in Karratha convinced me to return and continue my life. So, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that made it possible for me to come home to Karratha. Without you, I am not sure where I would be right now. Although it’s still hard to face life without my daughter, you have given me the strength I need to carry on. Many days I could have given up. I will be eternally grateful to all my friends in Karratha. Rachael Willis and Daniel Smith, I love you guys so much. You have been wonderful friends and my best friends since I’ve been in Karratha. To Julie Smith and Jimmy, thank you for all the support you gave, even when moving into our new whare [home]. I love you guys. Thanks to my really good friends at Toll, Pete and Heather Morgan. Trin, you have gone through so much and you are such a beautiful person. I am so glad you are in my life and thank you so much for looking after my house.

Hedland also claimed four more awards in the Pilbara regional finals, including Natural Heritage and Conservation, Heritage and Culture, Water Conservation and Young Legends. Keep Australia Beautiful WA chair, Mel Hay, said Hedland demonstrated strength in all aspects of sustainability and was a deserving winner of the regional title. “Hedland has a multitude of community groups and businesses that take pride in developing and improving their town and an array of community building events and heritage activities,” he said. Mayor Kelly Howlett, who was on hand to accept the awards, said the win was a team effort. “These awards are a result of the tireless dedication and passion of our many volunteers and community groups. Without your efforts and many hours of work, this would not be possible. Thank you!” Other category award winners included Karratha for Community Action and Partnerships, Parnpajinya for General Appearance and Wickham in the Waste Management and Litter Prevention category. Keep Australia Beautiful National manages The Australian Tidy Towns awards in which more than 1,000 communities and 90,000 volunteers take part each year, completing projects that would otherwise cost over $100 million in labour costs. A team of State Emergency Services officers from Tom Price has made the finalists’ list for the 2012 State Emergency Services Awards.

Kelly said she never expected to be recognised for the work she does with SES. “I do it for the love of it and to be able to help out the community, I certainly don’t do it for reward.

Simon Davidson, Nicole Kelly and Benjamin Bickley of the Tom Price SES Unit are up for the Team Achievement Award after being nominated by First Class Constable at Tom Price Police, John Hennah.

“I was floored that I was nominated but certainly honoured to be part of the nomination with Ben and Simon because they’re both outstanding individuals.”

Hennah said he nominated the trio after a daring rescue at Karijini National Park in July this year.

The Tom Price unit are up against six Fire and Emergency Services Authority SES volunteers and two SES units this year.

Hennah said the team were exemplary during the rescue at Dales Gorge.

FESA chief operations officer Lloyd Bailey said the finalists had each made an outstanding contribution to their area, and it is wonderful to see them recognised for their valuable work.

“They were contacted at 9pm, and I don’t think they stopped until mid-afternoon the next day,” he recalled. “The amount of hours they’ve put into volunteering in Tom price is just phenomenal.”

“It was not an easy task to select only nine finalists from the outstanding nominations received,” Mr Bailey said.

“Everyone knows the effort they put in, and I think it goes above and beyond the code of the SES, that’s why I put them forward.”

“These awards give us the opportunity to acknowledge that the volunteers have done exceptional work in their own time for the emergency services.”

Nicole Kelley, a nominee for the award, said she was honoured but shocked to be in the category.

“It is also an opportunity to thank all of our SES volunteers who continue to commit countless hours to keeping communities safe.”

“I’m actually a teacher by profession and I’ve been teaching in the country for nearly 12 years,” she said.

Guy Bache might look intimidating with his bushy beard and bunch of burly mates helping toss sausages out the front of Karratha’s Harvey Norman on a Saturday afternoon. But when Bache, known to almost everyone as Spike, recounts how he became a volunteer for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, the charity that grants wishes to sick kids, he sounds more like a kindly grandmother. “A few months ago I saw a write-up [in the newspaper] about Gina Rineheart and her trustee battle with her own children, and the millions it was costing them,” Spike said. “Then on the other page, I saw the poor old Starlight having to put 512 sick kids on hold because they didn’t have enough finances to grant them their wishes.” When Spike also read that Starlight receives no government funding and instead relies on the fundraising efforts of businesses and individuals, he was determined to lend a hand. At the next meeting of his union, the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, he suggested its members start pitching in to regularly raise money for Starlight. Spike said the guys were

touched by the story of how the charity cheers up hospital-bound and terminally ill kids with gifts like laptops for emailing friends or once-in-a-lifetime trips to Disneyland. “I mean these sick kids haven’t even had the chance to live their lives yet,” Spike said. With the CFMEU members jumping on board, Starlight fundraising activities are now held at every worksite in the Pilbara where the union is present. Spike himself has organised workplace raffles and barbecues. He also arranged for workers at his employer, engineering group Monadelphous, to donate a one-time direct debit from their salaries to the foundation. “We raised around $12,000 from that,” Spike said. A father to six children, Spike is keen to get as many people as possible involved in raising money for Starlight. His work crewmates help out and employer Monadelphous has regularly donated prizes for Starlight raffles and recently provided the food for the fundraising barbie Spike arranged outside Harvey Norman. With Monadelphous again providing the grub, Spike will be back outside Harvey Norman in Karratha on Sunday, September 23 and invites everyone to come down for a yarn and a snag.

Tired of a talking head?

It’s every Northwester’s dream. Your own camper trailer and a dinghy to take off the beaten track and around our spectacular land. And it’s come true for Malcolm Cross and Malcolm Byron of Karratha, who won the first prize in the Police Legacy raffle, which they support every year by buying a ticket. Cross said it was a huge surprise to receive the phone call saying he and Byron would be taking home the top prize of a camper trailer and dinghy. “We don’t actually buy the tickets to win anything, it’s just to support the police,” he said. Police Legacy is a support network for family members of police lost in the line of duty. “The police do a good job up here, and we like to support them.” “We weren’t expecting the call so we were pretty excited.” Cross said they bought between $50 and $100 worth of raffle tickets, and now that he’s won the prize he’d have to look for a chance to take a day off work.

“We’ll get it out there one day,” he said. Karratha Police Officer in Charge, Anthony Gaskell, said the raffle is an annual event held together with a fundraising bicycle ride, which this August travelled from Karratha to Broome. The raffle has been running for 19 years and will be celebrating its 20th anniversary next year. The raffle and Karratha to Broome bike ride has so far raised an outstanding $28,000 for Police legacy.

The World Wildlife Fund has marked National Threatened Species Day on September 7 by calling on the Western Australian government to strengthen environmental laws covering the Pilbara. WWF-Australia spokesperson Katherine Howard said not enough was being done to protect the local habitats of endangered animals, such as the bilby, northern marsupial mole, Pilbara olive python and northern quoll. “WA’s Wildlife Conservation Act 1950 is, in a word, outdated,” Howard said. “This Act provides no protection for the habitat of threatened species and only really regulates the ‘take’ (the killing or picking) of animals and plants.” After a decade of rapid mining and population growth in the Pilbara, WWF-Australia hopes the issue gains more urgency ahead of state elections next March. When contacted by the Pilbara Echo, Environment Minister Bill Marmion acknowledged the laws need reviewing. A spokesperson for the Minister said: “The Minister recognises the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950 requires updating and is seeking advice from the Department of Environment and Conservation.” Mr Marmion’s office also pointed out that $3 million in funding had recently been allocated to the conservation of endangered species in Western Australia. As well as funding for endangered animals, the dibbler, western swamp tortoise and western ground parrot, about “$1.6 million has been provided

for critically endangered flora recovery with 143 species currently under threat of extinction,” Mr Marmion said. WWF-Australia’s Howard said the Environment Minister’s comments were an encouraging first step. “Minister Marmion’s commitment to seek further advice on the need to replace the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950 is a welcome move,” Howard said. “Funding for threatened species is always welcome and much needed.” “But what WA really needs is fundamental legislative reform.” Howard said the Pilbara was a special region as it was home to some of Australia’s rarest animals, including the golden kakarratul or northern marsupial mole. Tunnelling silently through the Pilbara sands, the kakarratul has a lineage believed to begin at the time of the dinosaurs and “is so different from all other marsupials that scientists cannot decide how to classify them”, Howard said. Howard said the Pilbara is also the only place the small, red-coated marsupial, the kaluta, is found, and one of the few remaining homes for the bilby, which was once widespread across Australia. Other rare animals include the princess parrot and western pebble mouse, which carries pebbles in its mouth to build-up mounds that, over generations, can grow up to nine square-metres. With the endangered northern quoll and vulnerable Pilbara olive python having been recorded in areas currently being explored for mining, Howard says there is even greater urgency for improved conservation laws.

George update, week 5 providing civil works solutions

For over 20 years SuperCivil has remained dedicated to serving the civil construction industry, providing quality workmanship in road and car park construction combining base work, drainage, kerbing and asphalt to give our clients a hassle free package.

See what Newman tradesman, George, has been up to in the Big Brother house during the week.

What we love about George this week: - George’s dance off with Michael. Unfortunately George lost to Michael, but we reckon he

could have a go on Dancing with the Stars. - When George squirted Zoe in the eye with an orange. Zoe then stated she would come after George and sue him for millions if she became legally blind from the orange attack. - When Bradley gave George a lap dance after Bradley’s makeover.

The flexible tongue muscles form the pouch into a basket for catching fish and, sometimes, rainwater. Gregarious birds, they often hunt cooperatively and breed colonially. The Australian species tend to nest on the ground. Pelicans frequent inland and coastal waters where they feed principally on fish, catching them at or near the water surface. Although they are among the heaviest flying birds, they are relatively light for their apparent bulk because of air pockets in the skeleton and beneath the skin enabling them to float high in the water.

Pelicans swim well with their strong legs and their webbed feet. They waterproof their plumage with an oily secretion from their glands. They dissipate excess heat by gular flutter – rippling the skin of the throat and pouch with the bill open to promote evaporative cooling. The diet of pelicans usually consists of fish, which can be up to 30 centimetres long. Nearer the shore, several will encircle schools of small fish or form a line to drive them into the shallows, beating their wings on the water surface and then scooping up the prey. They catch multiple small fish by expanding the throat pouch, which must be drained above the water surface before swallowing. This operation takes up to a minute, during which time other seabirds may steal the fish.

The wings are long and broad, suitably shaped for soaring and gliding flight, and have the unusually large number of 30 to 35 secondary flight feathers.

Pelicans have been persecuted by humans for their perceived competition for fish, despite the fact that their diet overlaps little with fish caught by people.

Pelicans have mainly light-coloured plumage, but the bills, pouches and bare facial skin of all species become brighter before breeding season commences.

Apart from habitat destruction and deliberate, targeted persecution, pelicans are vulnerable to disturbance at their breeding colonies by birdwatchers, photographers and other curious visitors.

Newly hatched chicks are naked and pink, darkening to grey or black after 4 to 14 days, then developing a covering of white or grey down.

Widespread across Australia, the Australian Pelican has a population generally estimated at between 300,000 and 500,000 individuals.

The Pilbara Poet

by Elise Batchelor

If you sing “Tooralie-ooralie-addity” throughout this ‘ere ditty, you’ll be a pirate to the core in no time. In celebration of International ‘Talk like a pirate day’ this week, ahoy to Noelene Bradley! ‘Tis for you, this watery jingle, me parroted lassie.

The planking pirate Oh I’ve got me a fetish for pirating, Not DVDs, blu rays and such Not stealing a movie, Albeit quite groovy, And in any case, I’ve not the touch.

Oh, I’ve got me a fetish for birdie life, Not black crows or magpies or swans, And no albatrosses, Heck no, cut me losses, But oh woe if me parrot absconds.

No I’ve got me a fetish for pla-an-king, Not lying upon a flat board Whilst sprayed up a fountain Or stuck on a mountain Or super-glued to polished board.

Yes, I’ve got me a fetish for pirating, I’m landlocked in suits every day. Wanna seem like a threat Dressed up like Johnny Depp As a black patched proud pirate, I say!

Yup, I’ve got me a fetish for swashbuckling, Not fencing at the ‘lympic Games. No flouncing for good As did yon Robin Hood, Not that too goody two shoes – he’s so lame.

Ahoy, me hearties!

Your life and soul By Cindy Kempton Recently in a newspaper in Western Australia, there was an article about how to lose weight without doing any exercise. While their reasoning was flawed and held no scientific-weight (pardon the pun), it concerned me to think that we are still looking for the easy way out or the quick fix for obtaining a healthy body.

per week and of course drinking plenty of water. But we really should be exercising because the benefits far out weigh the negatives. Check out these reasons why you need to train: • It reduces high blood pressure or the risk of developing high blood pressure • Reduces high cholesterol or the risk of developing high cholesterol

Society is still keen to believe that we can achieve what we want in health and fitness without putting in the work.

• Reduces the risk of developing any type of cancer

Unfortunately, there is no easy way out. There is no miracle pill that we take before going to bed and voila, we wake up in the morning to find our skinny jeans suddenly fitting.

• Reduces or maintains body weight or body fat

It all comes down to plain, hard work – a combination of a great diet, exercising at least three to four times

• Improves psychological well-being

• Reduces the risk of developing diabetes

• Builds and maintains healthy muscles, bones, and joints • Reduces depression and anxiety • Enhances work, recreation, and sport performance.

These tips are only the tip of the iceberg, but the greatest reason is that it makes you feel good inside and gives you a break from your everyday routine. While the weather is still moderately cool, get outside and enjoy the fresh air, blue skies and feel your body and mind respond positively to the effects of movement.

Just found out you are pregnant? Not sure what to do or who to talk to? Family Planning WA offer appointments with a counsellor for unplanned pregnancy and post termination counselling*. Free telephone counselling is available for country callers.

Angel of Cuisine I went for a coffee at a local establishment this week with a friend and found a happy face in the bottom of my cup.

• FPWA offers pregnancy counselling that is non-directional and options based

It was a really nice touch, and I was so impressed I turned to my friend and showed her.

• Post termination counselling available

It’s great for two reasons. First, I actually sat down and managed to finish a coffee without my kids nagging me. But second, I saw the little happy face at the bottom of my cup.

• Counselling for partners and significant others • Talk to someone who can help you decide what is best for you

I have a lot of great moments with my kids each day, especially when it comes to food: ‘Why can’t I get olive, prosciutto and cheese sandwiches from the canteen mumma?’ asked my 7-year-old gourmand once.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge – Albert Einstein

Paving the Pilbara

But it’s not always what you eat or the coffee or a treat that makes a café break special, it is just the getting away from it all, which can be reward enough. Life is hard some days and lets face it, what you do each day is who you become, so who doesn’t need a little time out to reward themselves?

Food is a big part of life, but it’s not essential to creating moments. You can still have a great time without the sausage sizzle or the cake. You can also do the same with your kids. You can make a bigger, better, healthier treat at home some days, and they can be part of making it, or you can buy it from the shop. As an added bonus, I can get heaps more done if I make them wait and they end up trying to speed up the process by helping me out with a few things before we prepare a tasty treat. Think about how you could enjoy yourself this week without involving treats that are too unhealthy. If you’re going to a barbecue, can you change what you eat and make it better? There are some meat trucks in town selling beautiful cuts and flavours now, it’s really a good time to upgrade, treat yourself properly and enjoy the warm weather. Have a healthy week!

Recipe of the week This is a recipe that can form part of a Tapas dish. It is incredibly simple and low in fat, yet tasty enough to be a good accompaniment to any meat or seafood you might include in the Tapas. I would also eat this for lunch by myself or as a side dish at your barbecue or picnic.

Orange Spinach Salad Serves 4 PER SERVE:

FAT 3.75g – CAL 85 – KJS 282 500g baby spinach leaves 1 large orange Crushed roasted nuts Juice from another ½ orange ½ tsp extra virgin olive oil Prepare the spinach leaves and cut the orange in segmen ts, cutting out as much of the white pith as possible. Then further cut the orange to bit size pieces. Toss through spinach and dress with orange juice and olive oil. Top with crushed nuts.

Healthy Tips and Tricks Tapas is a great way to introduce people to vegetables. You can make a night of it, and you don’t have to eat a lot if you have good company and conversation. Eating from lots of little dishes

and trying small amounts of different things will be loved by big and little kids, especially when you have your own cutlery and make your own choices.

With Parklife arriving in Australia’s capital cities, Music Monkey Events and One 20 Productions are now bringing Parklife 2012 to Karratha and Port Hedland. With the likes of local DJs Panda, Damian John, Hanky and Flowers supporting Parklife veteran Micah, they will roadtrip to Karratha on September 21 then onto Port Hedland the next day. Micah, who has played in Parklife since the beginning of the event in 2000, said the road trip is all about bringing the music of Parklife to the Pilbara. “Parklife is very different to any other music festival,” he said. “It is all about the music, it doesn’t matter who plays, as long as they play the right music that the crowd loves and will get dancing to.” “Parklife may not have big name DJs, but we do the right thing that people love.” “I feel like with other music festivals, they loose touch with what it’s all about, some festivals focus less on the music and more on the event itself, which isn’t what it is about.” Having played alongside both DJ Damian John and Panda, Micah said is he looking forward to doing it again. “I’ve played with Damian John and Panda many times, and I love the work that they do,” he said. “Since I met Panda, he has flourished into the kick-ass DJ is he today.”

“He always brings the party with his energy, and he is well respected in the town.” Micah believes that both Karratha and Port Hedland always deliver and he has never had a bad experience in either town. “They don’t hold back, they really get into the spirit of the music,” he said. “Everyone is really aware of what music is in at the moment.” Having never played at Evolution Nightclub before, Micah is looking forward to the crowd’s response. “I never pre-program my set, you need to see how the crowd is going and play according to them, that is the best way to do it,” he said. “Ideally, it is not about me playing, it is about playing according to the crowd and making sure they have the best time that they can possibly have.” Both towns can look forward to some new remixes that Micah has recently made. “I have some new edits and bootlegs that Karratha and Port Hedland will be able to hear,” he said. The Parklife Roadtrip will be at the Evolution Nightclub on Friday September 21 with doors opening at 10pm until late, and at the Pier Hotel on Saturday September 22, doors opening at 8pm until midnight. Tickets costs $25 each and will be available at the door on the night. For more information, contact info@ one20productions.com.au.

By Courtney Bertling Get ready Karratha for a booty-shaking broad who will take burlesque dancing to a whole new level when she hits Karratha with FRINGE On-The-Road next Saturday. Miss Burlesque WA Winner, Ruby Slippers, and her friends from Sugar Blue Burlesque will be performing nightly alongside the old-school rockin’ sounds of DJ Ben Dog. Based in Perth, Sugar Blue Burlesque is a performance troupe and burlesque academy.

Borrowing from the 1920s through to the ’60s, Sugar Blue Burlesque presents a unique blend of classic burlesque and elaborate vintage costumes, with circus, comedy, music and crowd pleasing theatricality. A self-confessed dag, Ruby Slippers said burlesque is all about having fun. “I can’t take it too serious, because then I get bored,” she admitted. “I need to have fun, pull some faces and make people laugh.” Occasionally, practicing her face-pulling skills in the mirror, Ruby Slippers said that she likes to bring her own personality into the show.

Ruby also confessed a love for costumes, sparkles and even flamingoes. “I love performing. Even as a kid I would play dressups. I’m sure my parents would be able to tell you some embarrassing stories about that,” she laughed. Although burlesque sounds like a show for the men, it is slowly turning toward female audiences. “It is a very female friendly show,” Ruby said. “There is something for everyone, it is more than just a strip show, everyone has fun and 70 per cent of the audience is female, it’s awesome.”

Ruby said her goal in Karratha is to make everyone in the audience smile and laugh. Ruby Slippers will be performing Thursday September 20 to Saturday September 22 at the Spiegeltent at Centro Carpark at 10.30pm. Entry is free. And, if you love the show, why not try burlesque for yourself at workshops on the Sunday? You will be able to learn the basics of burlesque dancing at 12pm, and then at 3pm you will learn the makeup and hairstyles of burlesque. Both these workshops cost $30 each.

The cash question While benefits and the like have been an impetus to choose one employer over another for miners, the real deciding factor, as always, remains pay.

and the rest of the nation.

Whoever can pay the best wages will get the best workers, but is this still enough?

Overall workers in the sector recorded pay increases of between 4 per cent and 5 per cent in the past quarter alone, according to Ambit Engineering Recruitment.

In terms of salary, Western Australia is unquestionably leading the pack, with the high salary increases, predominately for mine managers, geologists, and OH&S professionals. However as there are such high, competitive salaries, companies have had to offer more benefits to secure preferred workers. Queensland is still chasing up WA on salaries, although New South Wales is quickly closing the gap, excluding fly in fly out worker wages of course. The lifestyle of workers in New South Wales has also been a major draw card for workers compared to regional and remote Queensland and Western Australia. While South Australian mining companies are increasing salaries, their levels aren’t able to compete with the other three major mining states, while Tasmanian miners’ salaries reflect the general disparity between the island state

Victoria barely rates a mention in state-by-state pay.

• Pay is still the motivating factor in choosing a mining job

These latest pay increases were ahead of the national inflation rate, which sits at only 1.6 per cent, and highlighted the continuing trend of high paying mining jobs. After tracking salaries across 130 job areas in the state, the company found that most resources sector workers have received pay increases of up to 5 per cent: for example, senior environment managers earn $100 672 (up from $96 800) while oil & gas sector senior project managers earn $274 560 (up from $264 000). Ambit CEO Peter Acheson put the pay rises down to continued demand for skilled workers. “It’s a situation that has inevitably led to pay rises - and there is likely to be continued

upward pressure on salaries and rates over the next quarter. In fact, I expect pay pressure to intensify as many resources sector companies are intending to further increase their hiring levels in the July quarter,” Acheson said. However labour shortages are still rife throughout the industry, and forcing miners’ eyes to foreign workers. He went on to add that “while the temporary 457 are not a long-term solution, it provides a safety valve that relieves the pressure on Australia’s skills base, and helps ensure confidence in industry capacity”. While the mining boom continues in Australia, it is unlikely that the skills shortage will be solved any time soon. Source: Australian Mining

Pilbara darts championship 2012

• Yolanda Bell fom the Dampier Falcons swings hard

• Karratha and Dampier Men’s Darts Association

By Gareth Lucy Karratha and Dampier Men’s Darts Association (KDMDA) sent three teams of four players to the Annual Pilbara Darts Championships. The fielded teams represented A, B and C grades at the championships. This year the event was hosted in Tom Price from July 2-6, and attracted 90 players. After five days of darts the teams had collected an impressive array of accolades. The A Grade team successfully captured their third successive championship. The team consisted of Ross Beeton (Captain), Bill Brown, Trevor Long and Jamie Gillespie. Both Trevor Long and Bill Brown were selected in the ‘Pilbara All Stars’ team. The All Stars team

comprises of the best eight players of the championship and it is a tremendous achievement to be selected in the team. The C Grade team also won their division for the first time in KDMDA history. The team consisted entirely of first time attendees at the championships. The team was made up of Gareth Lucy (Captain), Jeff O’Brien, Gary Jordan and Kenny Stevens. Notable individual highlights for the championships were from Kenny Stevens as runner up in C Grade singles and Gary Jordan who threw the first 180 of the entire championship and was the C Grade runner up for ‘Most Pegs’ with 27. Our B Grade team also performed admirably and were unlucky not to get to

the final. The team was made up of Rob Kelly (Captain), Bevan and Clarence Ryan and Ronnie Eaton. Our members and associates of the KDMDA are thrilled with these results and we want to thank our sponsors for their kind support this year, including Major Sponsors RIO TINTO, Retravision, Joyce Cranes, M&M Electrical, Atom Supplies, Pilbara Motor Group, Whelans, Auslec and Karratha Taxis. The association is holding its AGM on October 20 at 7:30pm at the Frank Butler Community Centre, Bulgarra. New and interested players are encouraged to contact the association through our website at www.kdmda.com.

“RELAX BY THE POOL”

Wickham to receive a Stormy reception in softball grand final By Claire Moran The West Pilbara Softball Organisation 2012 season reaches a thrilling climax this Saturday September 15 with the grand final taking place at 3pm at Bulgarra Oval. After three exciting preliminary finals, league leaders Wickham will play Karratha’s Inland Storm in what should be an epic grand final clash. Last weekend’s finals were played out in three matches after the regular season ended with Wickham 1 on top with 38 points, Dampier Falcons second on 36 points, Inland Storm on 35 points and the Orbits trailing on 33 points. The first final had Wickham 1 taking on second-placed Dampier Falcons with the winner automatically progressing to the grand final. The match ended up lasting more than two hours and going the full seven innings. Both teams played a solid game from the offset with Dampier marginally having the upper hand and forcing. When Wickham found their form though the tables turned, as Linda Retchford picked a gap in the outfield to hit a spectacular home run. Wickham’s Michelle Ramea and Tenielle also placed their hits beautifully so their teammates could move to bases around the diamond. Dampier’s Lynette Upton and Yolanda Bell played impressively, stopping everything in the outfield, but unfortunately could not keep Wickham from clinching the win and earning a spot in the Grand Final. Dampier Falcons were down but not out with a second chance to to play in the preliminary final the next day. Game two was an elimination final between the bottom-placed Inland Storm and Orbits. Both teams were eager to exhibit their skills in an attempt to progress through to the preliminary final. Storm got off to a strong start getting an early lead and making straightforward plays to get vital outs and keep the Orbits locked out

early in the game. Consistent batting from Stormers’ Nikki Brough and Kyla Thomas assisted in maintaining their lead, while Kalisa Storey and Jo Leo were strong in the field. Orbits’ Mereana Joseph pitched a solid game and had a number of safe hits to push her teammates around the diamond and over the home plate. Tracey Ward’s aggressive base running also put added pressure on Inland Storm late in the game. In the end, though, Storm’s safe and consistent plays saw them through to the next play-off, defeating the Orbits eight runs to four. The Storm then progressed on to play the Falcons in a match to decide who would play in the grand final the following week. And it was the Storm who looked good from the get go, getting out to a 12 - nil lead by the halfway mark. This was achieved with some fierce batting from the Storm with a huge home run from Jo Leo, followed by doubles from Kyla Thomas and Char Joseph. Jo Smythe also applied the pressure to the Dampier fielders with her impressive sneaking from base-to-base. For the Falcons, Lynnette Upton was again dominant in the field securing inspiring diving catches to prevent runs from being scored. Melissa Hands of the Falcons also had a strong game batting consistently and displaying gritty disposition and leadership. Falcon’s pitcher Jaimee-Lee Patterson was another to step up for the Falcons throwing a great pitching game. But in the end it wasn’t enough, and the Storm did enough to hold out the Falcons by defeating them 12 runs to eight and cement their spot in this weekend’s grand final. Please come down to Bulgarra Oval and watch what will be a very exciting game between this year’s league leaders Wickham 1 and last season’s premiers Inland Storm.

Pirates to clash with Hawks in softball grand final By Bob Neville The Pirates have set up a grand final meeting against the Hawks this weekend, after grounding the Jets in the 2012 Port Hedland Softball Association’s A-grade preliminary final last Saturday September 9. The game was a thriller with the Jets taking a slim lead in the second innings to wipe out a Lisa Harris score when Jenni Boyle and Vanessa Wainwright made back-to-back hits before making it over the homerun plate due to an error and wild pitch. But the Pirates hoisted their mainsail and got cracking in their second offensive play. Jess Finch was first up scoring a single, before Nicole Wylie and Kelly Johnson scored a two double runs-batted-in, followed by a Harris RBI single to take the Pirates to a 6-3 lead. The Jets came back with a Kirsty Kubala safe bunt and stealto-second, allowing Kylie Parker to drive in the run, while Sarah Ziegelaar slammed a loaded-bases triple to tie-up the game in the fourth dig. The Pirates re-gained the lead in their next bat with a Johnson triple, a Harris RBI-double and a Rachel Green RBI-single before both defences worked well to shut down all comers in the fifth and sixth. Jets then went into attack with two-down as Maria Chandra drove in two runners and came home herself off Delphine Ryder’s bat to tie the game up again.

But it was at the bottom of the seventh that the game reached its thrilling climax with Wylie slamming a match-winning line drive through the field to claim a place in the grand final for the Pirates. Shelly Glasson claimed the winning pitcher tag for Pirates while Harris and Wylie both came away with three from four and two RBI apiece and Johnson hit twofrom-three. The Jets’ Kirsty Kubala laid down three safe bunts from four turns at bat with Wainwright hitting two from four and Ziegelaar earning three RBI. Earlier in the day Hawks reserves beat the Cougars 25 to 11 to make it two Hawks teams in the grand final following the A-grade team’s preliminary final the previous week. It was Jen Price pitching the winning game and hitting fivefrom-six along with Natalie Abbot, Stevie Stimpson and Nikki Ferguson both going four-from-six to propel the side into a grand final match against the Rebels this week.

• Kirsty Kubala’s throw not in time to Lisa Hall as Nicole Wylie makes first base in the Pirates V Jets game

Maria Britcliffe also hit a perfect four-from-four for the Cougars with both Jade Wilson and Margaret Barker picking up two hits apiece. The B-grade plate saw PCYC add another trophy to their cabinet with a 25 runs-to-two win over Pirates with both Stacey Cosgrove and Caroline Ely slapping big home runs for the victors while Katie Murchie and Danielle Bushel combined to ensure they posted hits and runs in the final innings.

lives in, he’s just that type of bloke.

Legends come in all shapes and sizes and are judged by many different criteria but Chris ‘Polly’ Ryan meets them all. A state underage representative footballer with Victoria, with 140 Victorian Football League games, 80 Western Australian Football League games with East Fremantle, 50 games for the Falcons as well as three tours of duty as a coach in the North Pilbara Football League and a stint as its representative team coach, people tend to overlook he was an AFL listed player at both Hawthorne and Collingwood. These are great accolades for sure, but ‘Polly’ is a rare type of person that constantly gives his time to those who want or need it and always

As he moves away, as so many of our people do, to seek opportunity elsewhere with his wife and four young sons, it’s probably a good time to make sure that each of us is thanking the people who volunteer in our community. Driving out of Karratha this week, ‘Polly’ was working with the V Swans North West Champ squad as late as Wednesday as well as running the Pilbara AFL Women training session the night before. Chris ‘Polly’ Ryan gave a lot to the young men in the Shire of Roebourne and beyond and will be missed, thank you for what you did for footy here mate and best wishes for the adventures ahead.

WPJFA fairest and best recognised By Clint Degebrodt – VSwans Regional Development Manager The best footballers in the Shire of Roebourne were recognised last Tuesday night at the West Pilbara Junior Football Association (Inc) annual Fairest and Best award presentation. There are four awards in two categories with the Under 15s Fairest and Best as well as Runner up Fairest and Best. The same awards are given for the Under 18s competition. The Under 15s vote count was tense and close with Maeva Walker taking the runner up trophy with seven votes and Jack Cronin and Jesse Butler tying for the Fairest and Best award. The three players had outstanding seasons with big Kat Jesse Butler providing dynamic work as a ruck and tall key, Jack Cronin a reliable and attacking Falcons defender and

Maeva Walker creative on his wing at Kevin Richards Memorial Oval. If the Under 15s was close then the race for the best of the Under 18s was extreme with just three votes separating first and third. Micky Ball took out the runner up honours with 10 votes, just one vote behind the Under 18s Fairest and Best Jay Berthelson with Braden Levis third on nine votes. Interestingly, Levis polled in more matches through the midfield and key posts for the Kats, but the dominant running of Magpies midfielder Ball was enough to edge him out with the strong season of Falcons swingman Berthelson ensuring he took the main prize. Berthelson held down the fullback position as well as centre half back and was swung through the ruck and midfield. Congratulations to all players, coaches and committee on another fantastic season of quality country footy.
