Hedland Airport hotel to service increasing traveller demand By Tamara Binamat
and domestic passengers.
The Port Hedland International Airport is set for an impressive overhaul, with the Town of Port Hedland announcing the construction of a 200-room airport hotel in addition to major terminal developments.
With about 450,000 travellers passing through the airport every year, Town of Port Hedland mayor, Kelly Howlett, says an airport hotel is a top priority.
Tender proposals are being sought for development of the hotel, which will be located on a 56,000 square-metre block adjacent to the terminal. Council has allocated $70.5 million toward the Port Hedland International Airport redevelopment over a fiveyear period, with approximately $24 million committed for the 2012/2013 financial year. The redevelopment of the terminal is to assist with the growth in international

we’ll work through the assessment process and the final decision will be made after that,” she said. “Then they’ll be able to commence work. So it’s still a little way off, but it is quite a detailed development.”
Ms Howlett says interest in the tender has been strong with already 25 requests for the information pack.
It will be a requirement of the development that the hotel fits within the local landscape, uses local industry goods and services and accommodates environmentally efficient elements.
“At this stage, all proposals are due to council by November 7, and then
The hotel will also need to house both construction and operational staff.

By Tamara Binamat The State opposition has raised concerns about the developer behind the proposal to construct a Hilton Hotel in Karratha. Claims were made in Parliament that Mr Ron Tondut, director of Ramtron Australia, is a former bankrupt with a string of failed hotel developments to his name. Shadow treasurer Ben Wyatt said investigations by the opposition cast a cloud over the successful completion of the project. “Investigations by the opposition suggest the company [Ramtron Australia] set up to develop the project was registered only a number of weeks, two-to-three weeks, before Brendan Grylls’ press conference and has a paid up capital of $100,” he said. “Certainly there are some concerns regarding the ability of that company to actually deliver.” The announcement that a Hilton Worldwide Double Tree brand hotel would be completed in Karratha by 2014, was made in June this year. But Mr Wyatt said he is shocked at the due diligence conducted regarding the developer. “It certainly appears that Mr Tondut has been involved with up to three

Residents should prepare for the bushfire season FESA is issuing the following advice to urge people in the State’s north to get ready for the peak of the northern bushfire season, as the Kimberley and Pilbara head into the highest risk months for bushfires. The fire north of Broome over the weekend is a timely reminder that bushfires pose a real threat to communities in the North West. The Bushfire CRC Northern Australian Seasonal Bushfire Assessment for 201213 highlighted large areas of the North West face above average fire potential this bushfire season. Chief Superintendent Country North Rob Cox said a challenging season was expected across the board. “Much of the north is naturally fire prone country and dry conditions expected later in the season will make bushfires burn more intensively and extensively in the region,” he said. “Despite fires last season reducing of the amount of vegetation on the ground, the potential in some areas remains higher than normal. “Bushfires can pose a serious risk to lives and properties and everyone, including residents and travellers, needs to take action to keep themselves safe. “Now is the time to prepare your property and make a bushfire survival plan with your family that suits your circumstances.” The northern bushfire season usually runs from July to late October, and can continue into December depending on weather conditions. As the season progresses the chances of a destructive and dangerous bushfire occurring increases.
The Bushfire CRC seasonal outlook for the north of the State, released KC 9056 150x148 Pilbra Echo ad_Layout 1 18/09/12 1:10 PM Page 1 in August, showed the Pilbara and www.anvil-legal.com.au E: admin@anvil-legal.com.au
Northern Goldfields have above average bushfire potential because of heavy rainfall resulting in widespread grass growth in areas mainly east of Newman. It also revealed the Kimberley has been subject to high rainfall in the past six months that has resulted in significant grass growth across the region. Prescribed burning in the Kimberley has been largely effective, but vegetation growth increases the risk of fires starting and spreading. Inland from Broome to Kununurra and down to Halls Creek there will be a high risk of bushfire as the weather conditions are more conducive to bushfires. FESA has been working closely with local governments, pastoralists and remote Indigenous communities to implement fire management plans to reduce the impact of uncontrolled bushfires.
• Prune low tree branches and create a gap of two metres between your home and any branches. • Clear leaves and bark out of gutters. • Clear vegetation around boundary of property to create a firebreak. Make sure you meet your local government’s firebreak requirements. • Prevent sparks from entering your house by blocking any gaps in roof spaces, under floors and in wall cavities. • If you plan to actively defend your home you will need to have an independent water supply of at least 20,000 litres and petrol, diesel or a

Roebourne family organisation wins national child protection award By Tamara Binamat
the Mingga patrol.
Yaandina Family Centre in Roebourne has won The National Child Protection Awards for WA, recognised for its exemplary initiative to create a family focused community. The occasion was celebrated at the Yaandina Family Centre in Roebourne, with the award presented by Shire of Roebourne President, Fiona White-Hartig. Kylieanne Turton, family support manager at Yaandina, nominated the centre for the inaugural Play Your Part Awards for outstanding prevention initiatives. Turton said as she went through the 65 individuals that are a part of the organisation, she couldn’t narrow a nomination down to one employee and therefore nominated the whole centre. The idea stemmed from a colouring-in and poster-designing competition held for the children in the community to promote the Yaandina Family Centre to the region. Turton said it was their commitment to keeping children safe in the community that made the centre a winner. “We’ve got a great youth centre, which has just opened up,” she said. “The manager has done great things for the kids including health promotion and a whole range of things. “Our family centre is great as well, with Maree Pont, the manger of community care, running
“Everybody plays their part, down to the admin staff who keep everything running.” Turton said it means a lot to the organisation to be recognised for the work they have done for so long. “It was nice to be able to give them a bit of empowerment that what they are doing is being recognised and felt in the community.”

Fact Box:
The facts on child abuse and neglect: •
Child abuse and neglect continues to be one of Australia’s most serious challenges to overcome.
•
More than 30,000 children are reported as being abused or neglected every year in Australia.
•
We know from the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect’s National Survey of knowledge and attitudes that 92 per cent of Australians agree that child abuse and neglect are serious issues. Yet less than half of the Australian community would take action to
protect a child when confronted with clear signs of abuse or neglect.

Rising mining costs could threaten economy By Ben Leahy A Minerals Council of Australia report warns that Australia’s economy could suffer in the coming decades unless the government acts to help prevent rising costs in the mining industry. The report said that building new iron ore projects in Australia is now 30 per cent more expensive than the global average, while thermal coal projects were 66 per cent more expensive. High taxes, declining productivity and an unfavourable business environment were to blame, according to the report. Among recommendations to address rising costs, the report called for an increase in the hiring of skilled labour from overseas and a remodelled workplace relations framework. Minerals Council of Australia chief executive officer Mitchell Hooke said the emergence of fierce competitors around the globe means Australian mines need to act quickly before they lose further cost advantages. “Within highly-competitive global markets for thermal and coking coal, copper and nickel, more than half of Australia’s mines now have costs above global averages,” Hooke said. “Even in iron ore, Australia has lost its operating cost advantage for all but established Pilbara projects.” The report comes as some Australian mining companies postpone new investments in the Pilbara and commentators question the future of the mining boom amid falling iron ore prices. But the Minerals Council says growth in
large emerging economies means there will be continued strong demand for commodities in the coming decades. What is less certain is Australia’s ability to continue to secure a strong market share. While Australia captured 35 percent of global demand for iron ore between 1965 and 2000, it has been losing market share in the last decade. Iron ore is the only major mineral in which the nation has increased its market share (by one percentage point) in this time. To maintain market share and reduce mining costs, the Council report includes recommendations to alter The Fair Work Act to allow direct “relationships between the employee and the employer” and address a skills shortage by employing foreign workers. It also calls for more enrolments in minerals related university courses and greater focus on maximizing productivity through increased spending on innovation. The report is highly critical of The Resource Super Profits Tax and the approvals process for new projects, citing the example of thermal coal in which “the average Australian project experiences an additional 1.3 years of delay relative to those elsewhere”. Without government reform, the report warns that the nation’s gross domestic product could be 5.3 per cent lower by 2040 than it would otherwise be with a more competitive mining industry. “That equates to a reduction in income … of more than $5,000 per person in today’s dollars,” the report stated.

• Millars Well and Tambrey Primary students show off their works
Students design robot soccer players By Ben Leahy A small taste of the future came to Centro shopping centre on Tuesday September 18 when local Year 5 students displayed robots they created as part of a program for gifted students. The students, who are from different primary schools in the region, come together once every fortnight to participate in the Primary Extension Challenge program. After a few months in the program, they have created robots that can play soccer (well almost), dance to music, navigate a maze and even follow a mock skiing course. Along with Riley Boardman and Evan

and poetry, with each course designed to improve the student’s problem solving skills. But the robotics course, which uses Lego Mindstorm Nxt, a mixture of Lego blocks, sensors and small computers, seems a clear favourite. Machlan and the gang said they would love to become programmers and have their own robots in the future. “I’d use my robot to help people,” Machlan said. Machlan’s teammate Riley Boardman acknowledges robots can help humanity, but he thinks they would make great personal maids too. “I’d make it serve me,” he said.

Getting on top of the cash flow challenge employees It’s a very old story and it’s known to every businessperson – some trade debtors are slow payers. It’s not that they won’t pay. It’s just that for a whole range of reasons, they take longer to put the cheque ‘in the post.’ Ordinarily that’s not too much of an issue. But what if your own cash flow is going through one of those ‘tight’ periods? Or perhaps a particular job has been larger than usual so the amount outstanding is more significant. Similarly, any business subject to seasonal variation, and certainly every business that has experienced growing pains knows that ‘cash is king,’ and having cash locked up in invoices can be highly frustrating. What are the options? According to Al Rosano of West Coast of Fifo Capital, invoice financ-

LAND NOW SELLING Stage 4 lots have recently been released for sale and range from 3,600sqm to 1.3ha, they are priced from $974,000 (GST inclusive) and are ready for occupation by 2013 in the light industrial precinct. These lots all benefit from direct exposure to Dampier Highway. Stage 3 lots are available for sale and range from 4 to 6ha and are priced from $5.7M (GST inclusive). ing is the ideal solution for small to medium businesses with working capital stress. Invoice financing refers to the business selling one or more of its current invoices to a third party, which then pays the business a large part of the face value of the invoice. In Fifo Capital’s case, Al says, that’s up 90% of the value. Then, when your trade debtor actually settles the account, Fifo Capital West Coast remits the balance of 10%, less its fee. According to Al the advantages are considerable. “It could be that you want to invest in new plant or equipment, or you simply need a quick fix to meet your own obligations. “Rather than having to go to your bank for additional overdraft or other borrowing arrangements that
generally require collateral, you simply turn the asset you already have – the invoice, into instant cash. “It’s amazingly quick, painless and efficient. And it’s also becoming a preferred option. “In fact, many banks will recommend it because it does not interfere in any way with your existing financing.” From first contact Fifo Capital West Coast generally pays within 24 hours. But Al says that after that first transaction, one fax is all it takes and subsequent invoices will be turned into cash within 2 hours! From $10,000.00 to $1 Million. Anyone interested in this highly effective solution to an old problem can discuss his or her requirements by contacting Al Rosano at 0419 906 326.

Now that the families have iPads, Stu said the Big hART crew were also installing a bunch of great learning apps on each tablet too. But it’s not all about learning, there’s plenty of fun along the way. Two of the Roebourne boys, Nathaniel Edwins and Maverick Eaton, went to South Korea for a kids’ comic convention where they weren’t afraid to pester the vice president of Marvel comics. “We were hanging out with Marvel’s vice president most of the week,” Stu said. “And the boys were hammering him about X-Man and how they weren’t
happy with the latest Hulk and that Marvel should have used the old Hulk.” Being the superhero stars of their own comic strip, Stu said the boys might also be starting to get a little too big for their boots. “Nathaniel and Maverick think they are awesome. We have really had to pull their egos in a bit,” he said. That’s where the girls come into it. Having seen all the fun the boys were getting up to, they insisted they star in the second episode of NEOMAD. “Having the girls for this new episode has kind of pulled the boys’ egos in a bit,” Stu laughed. “And some of the girls are getting pretty good at Photoshop quickly, which is creating a new energy of competition between them and the boys.”

The spinifex scrub near Cossack might be a long way from the glamour of Hollywood, but seven Indigenous girls from Roebourne don’t seem to mind. They have big ideas about why they want to star in the second episode of NEOMAD, a sci-fi iPad comic featuring real-life characters from the Roebourne community. “Because we want to be movie stars,” 12-year-old Alison Lockyer told the Pilbara Echo from the shade of a mangrove tree, in between takes in filming for the comic. The girls aren’t exaggerating, either. The first episode of NEOMAD is currently on sale in the iTunes store, and will be shown on a big screen at the Roebourne oval this Wednesday September 26. Local kids have also starred in a string of other productions produced as part of community organisation Big hART’s ambitious Yijala Yala project, which aims to help Roebourne locals preserve their cultural stories. A group of Roebourne boys have already attended an international comic competition for kids in South Korea and helped make and star in a video game that has been featured in a US gaming magazine. Stu Campbell, an artist specialising in interactive comics for the iPad, has spent the past year working in Roebourne and says the boys are learning Photoshop and storytelling skills fast. “Probably the most important goal for the project is to skill these guys up so, in the future, they can preserve their own culture through new technological means that suit them. “At the same time there are general objectives that we are trying to meet, like improving literacy. “That is why there is a big focus on telling stories that the kids are interested in reading. “And all the kids in the community pretty much know the first comic wordfor-word now, which is pretty exciting. “They keep going back and tapping the speech bubbles again and again. They know each kid’s voice and they mimic the way they say it.” The Roebourne boys have not only been involved in every step of the creation of the NEOMAD comic, but they are also the stars of it, being featured in the comic’s filmed scenes as well as having animated characters based on them. In the story, they are known as the Love Punks, a group intent on solving the mystery of a space rocket carved with petroglyphs that falls from the sky. Along the way, they seek regular advice from the community’s elders. Tyson Mowarin, who owns the house where the boys come everyday to work on the comics, says the Yijala Yala project is exciting because it is building skills in the community that complement his own work called iCampfire TV. “iCampfire TV is a living breathing archive of Indigenous culture and history,” Mowarin said. “And my site needs content like comics and apps and videos. “So we’ve talked a bit about how when Big hART leaves there will be a whole community of skilled people, like these boys, to enhance the stuff that I do.” Mowarin said the boys might even be able go work for him full-time one day. The benefits of the Yijala Yala project are also flowing to the families of the Roebourne kids. “I was a bit concerned that we were maybe being a bit avant garde or jumping the gun by releasing the comic on the iPad rather than just a computer,” comic artist Stu said. “But in actual fact iPads are much

Helping Pilbara mining families to thrive By Tamara Binamat There are services to help miners adjust to fly-in, fly-out rosters or residential life in the remote Pilbara, but what about services for the families of those workers? Mining Family Matters is an online community arming Pilbara families with practical strategies to overcome the pressures of mining life. Last week the team touched down in Port Hedland and Karratha for the Mining Family Matters roadshow. It was aimed at celebrating mining, oil and gas families, while also offering professional advice and simple tips for tackling FIFO rosters and living in isolated communities. Mining Family Matters founder Alicia Ranford, who spent five years as a FIFO mum, said the roadshow event was a success with many companies coming on board. “We had quite a number of company representatives who were really engaged in how they could provide resources and
what they could do to better support their residential and fly-in, fly-out work forces,” she said. “It is really wonderful to see. “Companies really do want to look at how they can further support their workforce because for them, it’s also a matter of safety if a worker has got their mind at home.” Ranford’s tip for families, who may be new to the mining workforce, is to be aware the industry brings a lifestyle change. “It is a different lifestyle when one of you is working away for long periods of time and that you may come across some difficulties,” she said. “But that’s ok and normal and there are families all over Australia that go through similar things. “If you’ve got good communication skills and you’re prepared to be open and honest with each other, there’s absolutely no reason why you cant make the industry work for you, and have a good, strong relationship throughout.”

Warambie Estate recognised with design award By Ben Leahy The builders of the $30 million low-cost accommodation village, Warambie Estate, have been recognised with an award at the state Urban Design Institute Awards held earlier this month. National Lifestyle Villages and LandCorp took home the Judges’ Award for their work in developing an estate that meets a critical need in setting out a low-cost model for future housing estates, judges said. Debra Goostrey, the chief executive officer of UDIA, said Warambie Estate is not ground-breaking for the design of its houses. “What is ground breaking is that in the location they have delivered cyclone-proof, nice communities for people to live in where the alternative is dongers and sleeping in areas that may not be as nice,” Goostrey said. With high mining wages driving up rental properties in Karratha, Warambie Estate was completed last year to provide low-cost housing for workers, who are not employed in the resources sector.
The building of the estate was subsidised by the State Government and many of the houses were assembled in Perth and trucked up to Karratha. The Warambie Estate was not originally a winner in its UDIA awards category for affordable housing because it was heavily subsidised by the government. But Goostrey said the project had such potential to help transform the Karratha property market that judges were keen to recognise the estate with another award – the Judges’ Award. “The judges felt this was a fantastic model – albeit subsidised by government – that was clearly addressing a critical need in the community,” Goostrey said. “Having the tailor-made transportable product coming through has meant that it has set up a model that over time may become commercially viable.” “It certainly can be part of a longer term strategy to normalise the property market.”

On Wednesday, August 22, the extension English class of Karratha Senior High School visited Karratha Primary School as part of Book Week to read to some of the younger generation. The goal of the visit was to impart our love of reading to the younger students and teach them that reading is an important skill to learn, as it will play a big part in everyday life. It was very inspirational to see how much the younger children enjoyed listening to the stories that we read to them. They were very attentive listeners and participated well throughout the whole visit. Karratha PS student, Courtney Bartie, said “It was really fun and
amazing” and student Ben Turnbull said “It was great reading to the little kids”. James Brito, English teacher at Karratha SHS, said “I thought it was an excellent experience for our students to show off their reading skills and be examples for the younger students”. Reading could possibly be one of the most important skills that you could learn; it is how we discover new things. Reading is vital in developing a good selfimage. Being able to read is a crucial skill in being able to function in today’s society. It is important because it develops the mind and develops the imagination. People who know how to read can educate themselves in any area of life they are interested in!

And the bitumen sizzled as the cars they shizzled from towns both near and far All to catch the buzz (and be good for the fuzz) that was happening in Karra-tha. Yes the word on the street was the street. With the traffic lights glowing on top. And from Pilbara towns Not a single frown As they all drove there just to STOP. Oh the thrill of a city style dazzling, Where you hit that road for a treat And there’s nothing like a shiny set of traffic lights just to sit and sit. Hard to beat. And they all drove in far and wide to stop And sit and they weren’t alone. And when the red turned green And the lights had been seen, They turned left and all drove home.

NGO workers call for increase in district allowance payments The Pilbara Association of Non Government Organisations has called on the State Government to help fund increased district allowance payments to NGO workers in the region. PANGO chairperson Bob Neville said community services workers in the Pilbara received between $1,200 and $3,500 per year in district allowances, while government employees receive around $15,000 annually. “The community services sector in the Pilbara is the backbone of the community, providing essential services to the community on behalf of the government,” Neville said. “Yet the sector is struggling to attract and retain staff due to spiralling living costs and competition with the higher
salaries paid by both the private and government sectors.” PANGO’s comments come after the West Australian Government’s Regional Price Index report in December found that the cost of living in places like Port Hedland was 37 per cent higher than in metropolitan areas. In response to the report, the State Government increased district allowance payments to its employees in the region by an average of $6,000. But PANGO’s Neville said the government should also recognise the importance of community workers by factoring a commensurate district allowance into the payments it makes for projects contracted to local NGOs.

Life is black and white for sharks MODERN
A new joint study between The University of Western Australia and The University of Queensland has confirmed that many sharks are colour blind.
Research team leader Assistant Professor Nathan Hart from UWA said the finding could help conserve sharks and prevent attacks on humans. “Sharks are highly visual animals, but the world they see lacks colour and will appear as shades of grey like we see when we watch a black and white

Autulies Jenkins is looking for more friends to join him every Tuesday on the playground slide near the Millars Well Pavilion.
“Particularly Aboriginal families because they are so family orientated – everything revolves around that extended family.”
Along with his mum and baby sister, Autulies is one of the first children to attend a new playgroup aimed at supporting Indigenous families recently moved to the Pilbara.
With support from a number of community organisations, the new playgroup will hold early learning lessons to help children transition to school.

But Gaiter said the main reason for the playgroup was to help families make new friends and build connections with schools, healthcare services and the wider community. Your life and soul By Cindy Kempton
To me, exercise comes in three levels. Level one exercisers are those who exercise for general health and wellbeing. They are happy with the way their bodies are and like the feel exercise gives them. These guys exercise how our government tell us to: “For 30 minutes a day, three times a week”. To do this, you can walk the dog, go for a gentle swim or leisurely golf game or simply put the bubby in the pram and head out onto the footpaths for 30 minutes.
Level two exercisers are folk aiming for a particular goal, be it weight loss, cardio improvement, strength and power gains, or they just like to train at higher levels of intensity.
The third type of exercisers are those that enjoy the ultimate in training.
They will be found, quite often, with their heart rate monitors on, pushing their bodies into the fat burning zone and high fiving themselves when they feel like they have pushed that extra bit harder.
Their heart rates sit consistently in the training zone, and they love the feeling of achievement and accomplishment after every training session.
Runners, ocean swimmers, high intensity gym goers, Crossfitters and strength trainers fall into this category. No matter what type of exercise they do, they like to do it hard.

The 16 students and five supervisors headed in separate groups to Carnarvon, Kununurra, Meekatharra and Tom Price to run the free clinics, which started on Monday August 6 and ran for the month. Organiser Dr Bruce Walker from Murdoch’s School of Chiropractic and Sports Science said this was the sixth year the clinics had run. “The school has developed a good relationship with several Aboriginal

They are exposed to working in rural and remote settings and also often dealing with more severe muscle and bone problems that they do not see as frequently in the Murdoch University clinic.” Dr Walker said the students treated muscle and joint problems, particularly of the spine. “One of the purposes of the trip is to help students build long-term relationships with local Aboriginal communities in the hope of delivering ongoing care,” added Dr Walker. “This has occurred in several of

After a whirlwind few of years, including winning the Telstra road to Tamworth competition in 2009 and shooting his first music video West Australian Woman, Colum is now back to his roots in the Pilbara, even paying homage to his old home in his new single Hot out Here. West Australian Woman is on the Country Music Channel’s playlist and features on his self-titled debut album Corey Colum. With the Dockers AFL game, cheap beers and the roast dinners in full swing, Colum took time out from his set to update the Pilbara Echo on his journey that has come full-circle. After releasing his album in Tamworth,
the place,” he says with confidence. “We’ll go over there [the east coast], but it doesn’t mean we wont keep coming back to gig here as much as we can.” As a country music artist, Colum says the Pilbara’s scenery inspires him musically. “We love camping and being out in the bush, that’s the inspiration right there,” he said. “The red is beautiful. The track Hot out Here is based on the Pilbara and about living here. “Another song on the album is One of Us and that’s based on us moving here four and a half years ago and how we felt accepted into the town, that’s a big song for me. “Hot out Here’s probably the most [connected with] working up here and the heat. “That’s going to be the next single that comes out, with a film clip too. “I just want to keep out there and keep playing as much as we can live.”

SETTING SONS
Country music star and former Pilbara local, Corey Colum, snuck into town last weekend to perform at every country music fans dream venue, the Karratha RSL.
Colum has been on a full throttle touring ride. “The last two months we’ve been on the road,” he said. “We’ve been along the Gibb River road and had a few gigs, we’ve been up to Darwin, back down through to Daly Waters to a pub out in the middle of nowhere, then across to Mackay. “Next year we’re looking at moving over east to try push the music thing even further.” On the music front, Colum’s immediate goal is to gig as much as he can, and make his presence full known to the east coast. Little does he seem to realise, he has already made an impression. He is already signed with ABC/ Universal Music and in regular rotation on the Country Music Channel. So what keeps bringing Mr and Mrs Colum back to Karratha? “Its always going to be home for us. It has a special place in our hearts, we love

The ”One part orchestra, one part bonfire jam, one part circus” artist will be performing at Karratha Tavern on Saturday and Sunday night.
Also, for the first time in Australia, Dutch drummer Josse Sharrard will join Toby’s band along with bass player Gavin Arnold.
The singer, guitarist and front woman describes her music as blues, roots, reggae and gypsy rock.
Toby calls WA home and says she loves touring the country towns.
If you haven’t had the pleasure of Toby’s live shows, it’s to be-seen-tobe-believed. Toby has just returned home from a six-week tour of Canada to release her aptly titled new album, Coming Home. Toby’s feistiness takes listeners away, testament to her extensive singing career, which boasts performances alongside Stevie Wonder and Alicia keys and and has supported artists such as Sheryl Crow and Jimmy Barnes.

“It takes a lot of hard work! I’ve played about 100 shows and I don’t stop working,” she said. “It’s just a continual working of building up your fan base wherever you are and putting together a strong band that hopefully impresses the crowds.” Since being in Karratha last
“When I can do it, it’s really worth the trip for me. You’ve got good crowds … and every time I’m up there I really, thoroughly enjoy myself.” Toby said her favourite crowd is either a fun dancing audience, or a silent audience hanging on every note. In Karratha, the fans can expect a lot of fun and a rockier show. “A dancing crowd is a lot of fun because the more fun they have, the more fun you have and vice versa,” she said. “It’s a lot of really good energy in the room. You feed off your crowd so if they’re giving you good energy you’re going to give it back more. “That’s why we love Karratha, we definitely don’t go there for an intimate show, we go there for a rocky fun show and to have a good time.”

There was networking, drinking, cheering and plenty of hot golf shots at the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s annual corporate golf day. The day kicked off with lunch and networking followed by a very long nine holes as some teams made slow progress across the greens. But at the end of the day it was the guys and girls from local gym Life and Soul who won the event under team name Soul Lotto. Runners up were Crawford Realty, or Purple Monkey Dishwasher.
The Karratha Visitors Centre won the ‘Naga’ award with their team, the Mongrel Red Dogs.

The moment is perhaps indicative of the way Flynn has embraced Australia and Australia has embraced him back since moving here in 2001 to perform and set up a small theatre company. Not only has Flynn performed with a symphony orchestra in Australia – an opportunity he said would not have come his way back in the UK – but he has reached out to oftenneglected audiences in regional Australia. As an actor and singer, he has written productions telling the life stories of artists, such as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Dean Martin, and toured them through regional Western Australia and Queensland.
He said a key to his success is his focus on connecting with audiences. “Jazz frightens people off sometimes, but jazz is so multifaceted,” Flynn said. “I don’t even call myself a jazz singer. I would say I was an entertainer. “Sinatra was never a jazz singer. Nat King Cole was a jazz pianist but he wasn’t a jazz singer. “So I think that style of music, whether you call it jazz or what, has such clever and colourful lyrics that you are able to take the audience on a journey and tell a story.” For those who missed out on seeing Flynn this time round, he’s already keen to come back after being impressed by the quality of the local sound engineering and the fantastic support from REAF organisers. He also said, he’s got plenty of quality years of performing left in him yet. “Jazz singers only improve with age and life-experience because they can relate more to the music,” Flynn said. “Look at Tony Bennett, he’s 85. So I’ve got 40-years left in me.” With so much of Flynn to look forward to Karratha fans should be grateful he turned to jazz. If he had of been more successful at his early endeavours, things might have turned out differently. “When I was a kid, I wanted to be a pop-star,” Flynn said. “I was in a band called “And Now the World” – [the name being] in anticipation of us making it big across the globe.” “[So lucky I turned to jazz] because if I was in the pop business, I would have been kicked out and retired long ago.”

Glory days are over: BHP BHP Billiton has put a freeze on executive salaries and warned that recent highs in some parts of the mining sector are unlikely to be repeated.
In line with the rising costs of all major miners BHP said its operating costs had increased 11.8 per cent per annum over the last three years.
In the company’s annual report BHP chairman Jac Nasser marked economic instability in Europe and the US and softening growth in China as key pressure points for the industry.
It also said the skills shortage was still hurting the bottom line, with labour and contractor increases accounting for over a third of its costs.
BHP CEO Marius Kloppers also said lower commodity prices and higher costs and currency rates were also causing headaches for the company. Outlining future supply and demand BHP said iron ore production was expected to meet the demand and “the scarcity pricing seen in recent years is unlikely to be repeated”. But the company said demand for raw materials was positive in the long term as the developing world industrialised, and copper was tipped to be a key growth point. BHP said copper production was unlikely to meet demand through to 2015 and beyond, and prices were expected to be high enough to support the development of new mines in the future.

Young fisherman’s dream catch
• Aiden Harpley takes time out from fishing to enjoy one of Dampier’s pristine island beaches
Young Aiden Harpley had a fishing trip to remember when he ventured into the calm waters of the Dampier Archipelago last month. With the help of his dad, fouryear-old Liam was able to reel in a big fish, which he proudly displayed for the camera. Aiden’s uncle and Dampier resident, Kyle Harpley, said the Pilbara weather never disappointed and the area was a great place for children to experience Australia. “Dampier is a great place for kids, there is so much wildlife and the safety of the islands makes the archipelago a good place to get out on the boat,’’ he said.

Wickham win softball final in a thriller By Claire Moran The West Pilbara Softball Organisation women’s softball Grand Final took place on Saturday at Bulgarra Oval with the two finalists saving their best game of the season until last. League leaders Wickham took on last season’s winners Inland Storm in a battle that left all spectators on the edge of their seats right from the get go. Spectators were greeted to the sight of a jovial Wickham side singing songs and having dance offs in their dug out before the game had even begun. By contrast, the Inland Storm were more reserved and focused on the task ahead. After a team talk from the WPSO president Barrie Sargeant, the game got under way with Wickham the first to field. Michelle Ramea took her well-
a beautiful out with Jo Leo over running third base and Michelle firing the ball to Linda to make the tag. Kalisa Storey also had to make a mad dash back to her base as Wickham tried to make the play to get her out at the same time. At this point in the game the score was 5-3 in Wickham’s favour with Kyla Thomas up to bat. When the pressure is on, Kyla never lets her team down and this situation was no different with a beautiful hit that smashed the ball out of the park to draw the game as her team mates sprinted around the diamond to score. But Wickham couldn’t back up with a followup score. Jo Smythe of Storm made a great pick up in the outfield, threw it directly into Kyla’s glove at third, who in turn shot it straight to Nikki at second to close down the Wickham runners. The score remained at a draw for what seemed to be an eternity, with catches being taken left, right and centre, until Nikki Brough came up to bat. She hit a beautiful shot straight into an outfield gap to get two runners across the home plate for eager ballers in this age group that have been Storm. waiting to get back on the court. She had a number of Storm players heading straight back to the dug out for no score. Both teams started off strong with Tracey Blanket from Wickham and Nikki Brough from Inland Storm taking excellent infield catches to keep players from getting around the bases. In the second dig, Inland Storm looked to be the stronger side making some strategic plays, which caused Wickham problems and forced some wild throws. Jo Leo of Storm also hit a perfect bunt to get to first, while Marilyn Ansey from Wickham struggled to hit Char Joseph’s consistently quick pitches. had Wickham struggling to hit her, striking out two players in a row. Wickham’s catcher, Tenielle, however returned the favour taking a catch on Virginia Weightman’s third strike, sending her back to the dug out. Wickham’s Janelle Scott also made a great play to keep Storm out, taking Char Joseph’s hit, playing one, and then taking the ball again on second bag to make the double play. Wickham’s nimble little sneaker Crystal had Storm under pressure by creeping around the diamond, which caused the game to become tied yet again with seven a piece and two down. Kyla Thomas took a good catch at three to close them down and end the game in a draw after seven innings. Inland Storm were the first to take the field in the tie break, with their last runner Nicholle Sullivan starting on second base and Nikki Brough up to bat. Nikki punched out a beautiful hit, which was taken in the outfield, and Nicholle was caught out making her way to third bag. Wickham quickly closed them down and were up to bat, starting Tracey Blanket on second and their biggest hitter Michelle Ramea up to bat. Tensions were high when Char Joseph released the pitch to find the bat swung around with immense power to smash the ball way out into left field, leaving Jo Smythe chasing it down and hurling in an enormous throw into home only to be just beaten by Tracey, who’s home run claimed victory in the game. Both sides said after the game that they thoroughly enjoyed the match, agreeing it was by far the best game they played all season. The WPSO and Karratha Softball Association would like to take this opportunity to thank all their players, coaches, scorers and volunteers that helped make this a really enjoyable season, and they hope to see you all again next year.

MEGA RAFFLE • The hot mix crew work on the track
BMX-ers are back on track BMX racers competed for the final points of the season last Friday September 2012 at the Karratha BMX Club track. The crew now head off to Tom Price this weekend for the 3rd Round of the regional Northwest Championships. The club also used the Karratha event to mark the official re-opening of the town’s track, after new hot-mix first and second corners were laid out with assistance from Rio Tinto and
the Shire of Roebourne. This was a very big task that was started more than eight weeks ago with the redesign of track. It took a lot of time and effort to bring the corners up to the correct shape, and the assistance of more than 30 people to lay the 82 tonnes of hot mix, which had to be spread and rolled by hand. Thank you to everyone who made it down to help out.
We now have the top of the second corner down to the marshaling area covered – it was a great effort that leaves us with two very fast corners. Daniel Sprague, an elite rider and coach, also came up this weekend to provide training to locals and had nothing but praise for the new track and improvement in our riders. Daniel and the other coaches and elite riders made the trek up to Karratha thanks to support from Rio Tinto.

Sport holiday program is back again By Courtney Bertling During the October school holidays, Inclusion WA will work with community groups and sporting clubs in Karratha and surrounding areas to provide a multi-sport holiday program to kids of all abilities living in and around the town. Inclusive WA is a program open to people of all abilities aged seven to 30, but was specially targeted at children with disabilities and their siblings. Inclusion WA is pleased to announce that they have received a grant from the Woodside-operated North West Shelf Project to support the Karratha Inclusive School Holiday Program. The grant will be used to help local clubs accommodate children with disabilities, by purchasing modified sporting equipment among other initiatives. The program will alternate between four different sports across two weeks during the holidays, including swimming, lawn bowls, basketball and football. Children who attend three or more sessions will receive a ticket towards the draw for a major prize, and for every friend they bring along, they will get another ticket. Denver De Cruz and Matt Shaw are the guys behind the program.
• Karratha kids come out in support of Inclusion WA “The kids all work together, and it really shows the strength of the program. Kids of all ages, whether they have a disability or not, join in,” Denver said. “It shows kids from an early age that there is nothing different about someone with a disability, that a disability doesn’t set someone apart from life. “So many people have become involved, organisations, schools, carers. The response has been
really positive. “Our biggest goal is for all kids that grow up in Karratha that engage in the program to know that having a disability doesn’t need to hold them back in life.” In the first week, there will be lawn bowls at the Karratha Bowls Club on Tuesday, October 2 between 10am-12pm, swimming on Thursday, October 4 at the Karratha Swimming Pool between 2-4pm and on Friday,
Country Weeks 2012 fixtures released Almost 1,000 football players, as well as their friends and family, will descend on Cockburn’s Beale Park in Perth for the week long country week tournament. Teams representing the Pilbara include 11s boys from Karratha and Newman, 14s girls from Newman, 13s boys from Karratha and Newman, 15s boys from Karratha and 17s boys from Karratha and Newman.
October 5 there will be tee-ball at Bulgarra Oval between 1-3pm. In the second week there, will be swimming at the Karratha Swimming Pool on Wednesday, October 10 between 2-4pm, lawn bowls at the Karratha Bowls Club on Thursday, October 11 between 10am-12pm and basketball at the Karratha Entertainment Centre on Friday, October 12 between 1-3pm.
