Crawford Realty & The Pilbara Echo want to wish a hearty congratulations to Shonna Hennessy & Daniel Berthelsen on their recent engagement. Long-time sweethearts and Karratha locals, Shonna & Daniel are well wished by friends, family & colleagues alike.

All the best & we are all looking forward to the wedding!

Kristian Gerathy recently moved to Newman to take on the roll as an environmental officer, and one thing she monitors is dust. Last weekend she took some photos of the dust storm that hit the town, with this picture of it about to engulf the new sign at the front of the town.

“Let’s just say, you didn’t need to go anywhere to monitor it when the storm front hit!” she said. “The visibility on the highway dropped to 10m and I was forced to pull over on the side of the road.” Kristian used a Nikon D5000 with a 18-55mm lens

O’Donnell Griffin, the contractor undertaking the works, is progressing in Bulgarra and Millars Well. The first changeover from overhead power to underground took place on 16 August in Viveash Way and to date 118 properties in Karratha have been undergrounded. This is a major electrical project that has four stages of work:

Impact on you The external cables between the front boundary to the meter box, and along the street verge will be installed using underground drilling or open trenching. The contractor will door knock before work on private property commences. You will be notified when access into your yard is required. If your switchboard is inside your house, access into your house will be required. All verges and work areas are recorded before work commences so they can be repaired to a similar standard after the work takes place. Care will be taken at all times to minimise the impact of this work on your property. However, some disruptions to verges and front gardens will occur. At the different stages of work, there may be an interruption to your power supply for up to four hours. You will be notified at least three days prior.

In the back of the beer garden, on a bench built for two, sit three. A gent is putting the moves on a sun kissed beauty. His shirt rolled up to his elbows and tucked into pressed cotton shorts; her shapely legs, crossed just so, rival Megan Gale’s. In this casual crowd of wife beater singlets and frayed jeans he might as well be wearing a sign that says, ‘Trying too hard’, but it’s not that which is causing her eyes to roam the room. There is only one thing between him and his destiny - his wingman, pressed between them. In this age of facebooking, twittering, textmessaging and one night stands, swift relationships have become the norm with wingmen taking a backseat. Rio rolls out millions on driverless trains By Courtney Bertling Rio Tinto plans to run the world’s first automated long-distance heavy-haul rail network, with a $478 million investment in driverless trains controlled from its operation centre in Perth. The resources giant currently uses 41 trains to transport iron ore from mine to port on its Pilbara rail network, comprising 148 locomotives and 9,400 iron ore cars. The plan was first revealed in 2008, but the global financial crisis put it on hold. Rio Tinto chief executive Australia Sam Welsh said automation would boost productivity to protect against the skill shortage facing the mining industry; but it is also about saving money. “Automation helps us address the significant skills shortage facing the industry, providing a valuable opportunity to improve productivity,” he said. “However, as we expand our business we will see an overall increase in job numbers and this will provide new opportunities in the rail division and elsewhere. “As always, we will engage directly with those affected as we gradually make the transition to automation over the next three years.”

Analyst Peter Strachan said it’s probably about saving in actual operating costs . “Because these drivers are really highly paid people and they just sit there on the train,” he said. “Whereas you could have a skilled technician in an operating room probably paid less.” Rio denies the program is about reducing employee numbers saying its 500 train drivers will be given new opportunities within the organisation and the expansion plans will lead to an overall increase of jobs. Other benefits include more efficient fuel use, resulting in lower energy costs and a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions for each tonne of iron ore produced. But unions say it is inevitable that jobs will go. CFMEU Gary Wood said to retrain and re-skill those people would be very difficult. “And how many will those tasks be that they train them for and what will be their salary cuts as a result of that,” he said. “So it’s like Rio Tinto holding the gun at those employees’ heads.” The first driverless train is set to be launched in 2014, however the overall expansion of rail operations still needs State Government approval.

Rio employees initiate clean up Recently, Rio Tinto employees from Cape Lambert Operations warehouse began a community clean up initiative aimed at encouraging recycling throughout Wickham. Meeting monthly at the Wickham recycling station, the group will work to keep the station tidy and are encouraging community members to also lend a hand. The project commenced after Rio Tinto Cape Lambert warehouse supervisor Mark Brown and his team identified the need for a tidy and organised recycling station and decided to make it one of their community projects. Rio Tinto Cape Lambert Port manager Michael Bailey said the initiative is a fantastic way to encourage recycling among the community and promote tidiness in the town. “The recycling clean up in Wickham is important in fostering positive recycling habits in the Wickham community,” Mr Bailey said. “We are thrilled members of our warehouse team decided to take this project on.” The group are keen to have more community members involved in the initiative, to ensure recycling becomes an integral part of the Wickham community.

Aboriginal work scheme awarded $700,000 By Courtney Bertling A Pilbara employment service has been awarded $699,657 from the latest round of the State Government’s Social Innovation Grants Program. Community Services Minister Robyn McSweeney presented a cheque to Ngarliyarndu Bindirri Aboriginal Corporation for the Roebourne-based Yirramagardu Crew project last Tuesday. The Yirramagardu Crew provides opportunities for long-term unemployed people and those facing significant barriers to gain employment. The project forms a work crew to maintain Roebourne’s community assets and town sites. Yirramagardu Crew supervisor Vic Hedland said the crew involves people who want to make something of their life. “There is no pressure to be a part of the crew, if they really want it, they will do it,” he said. “I was really quite shocked when we were given the grant; it makes me believe that we have something to do and something to prove in making a better life for the younger generation. “The grant will go towards the whole town, fixing houses, landscaping and hopefully it will

one day with a Tidy Town Award.” Mrs McSweeney said that through the Social Innovation Grants, $14million had been allocated across four years to help community organisations deliver innovative social and community services. “The program is expected to make a significant contribution towards the establishment of a culture of innovation in the delivery of human services in Western Australia,” she said.

Our areas of practice include: • Alternative dispute resolution • Binding financial agreements • Collaborative law • De facto relationships • Division of superannuation • Divorce • Family Court representation

“This project will provide support and employment to local people, adapting to the unique circumstances of Aboriginal communities. “It will also provide flexible work options based on the principles of autonomy and personal responsibility, providing significant social benefit to the Pilbara region.” Mgarliyarndu Bindirri chairperson Gladis Walker said that the project is very important for the crew as it is a stepping-stone to their future jobs. “The project is doing really well, it gives the boys hope for the future, I can see that they are all really happy,” she said.

You don’t see many bold women going bald these days, but one 19-year-old local girl, Emma Kitching is not scared of the shaver and will be shaving off her long, healthy hair for the World’s Greatest Shave in March. The team started at 8am making every car shiny and spotless, finishing at 1pm with a sausage sizzle in between and drinks that could be purchased. Emma said it was about two years ago when she saw a couple of kids shaving off their hair on the TV and thought she would never be able to do that. “They were so brave, but then I thought, maybe I would give it a go,” she said.

“It is a good cause and I do have quiet long hair, so people tend to pay more money when they see a girl with long hair willing to shave it off for the cause.” She said that her family has been affected by cancer when her grandfather died last year and her school friend who has been battling cancer for the last few years. “I know that Leukaemia is found in a lot of younger people,” she said. “But it is more about supporting everyone that it affected by it. “It is not just the people who have cancer; it affects everyone that knows that person.” She admits that she will feel a bit ‘naked’ when all of her hair is shaved off but said it will be fine and will grow back. “People should get behind Shave for a Cure because all of the money is going towards an excellent cause,” she said. “I have a set goal of $5,000, but anything more or less would be great, any amount will help towards finding a cure.” To donate and help Emma reach her goal, head to www. worldsgreatestshave.com and search ‘Emma Kitching’.

Warambie tenants still enjoy night By Courtney Bertling Last weekend, the Warambie Estate tenants enjoyed a village barbeque and a night of mingling, even though Minister Brendon Grylls could not make it to the official opening of the estate due to being ill. National Lifestyle Village manager Troy Tolhurst said some of tenants have been living in the estate for almost a year now, and hopefully it is serving the purpose. “Thanks to Landcorp for building this lovely estate which we can live in and enjoy, and obviously RDL (Regional Development and Lands) for their foresight to create something like this in our community, which was definitely in need of service workers accommodation,” he said. “It’s such a benefit in this very expensive town that we live in. “We have some lovely gifts from Landcorp and Royalties for Regions that each of the tenants can enjoy.” Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Robin Vandenberg, said it is a great shame that Minister Brendon Grylls could not be there. “There is no doubt at all that Brendon, as the Minister for lands and regional development, wouldn’t want to miss this, it has been his baby and something that was his initiative,” he said. “We, as a chamber, have been great supporters of this and we think that it is just fantastic that there are now 100 houses that can accommodate 250 people. “It is a fantastic concept and with the help of Royalties for Regions, the funds have been made available to build it.” Mr Vandeberg said that it was $30.4M that was initially allocated to build the development. “It is right in the centre of town, very close to all of the amenities, so the location is perfect,” he said. “On behalf of the chamber and everyone else, including Brendon who couldn’t make it today, I hope everyone appreciates this opportunity. “I’m sure we will do something down the track with the Minister, because without his input, drive and enthusiasm, this development wouldn’t be here today.” Mr Vandenberg said that many other towns’ have seen this concept, and now want to take it on, including Port Hedland, Newman and Coral Bay. “As a chamber, we are pushing very strongly, and will be looking at developing this idea in other areas of the town because it is a fantastic idea,” he said. “So the people living here now, I hope you enjoy it as it’s a wonderful development.”

Hot weather doesn’t stop markets By Courtney Bertling The Karratha Visitor’s Centre held their Buy, Sell and Swap markets last weekend, and one thing they learnt is that no matter how hot and sweaty it will be, the markets will still be as successful as anticipated. Looking around the 20 stalls situated around the centre, there was something for everybody, DVDs, books, clothes, kids toys and even a pair of red, sparkly high heel shoes that I managed to snatch up, so now I can pretend I’m Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. In only an hour and a half of opening the markets to the public, already 120 people had come through the centre to check out this monster car boot sale. KVC manager Barry ‘Bazz’ Haris said the first thing they learnt for future markets is that they will be held at night due how hot it is in the morning. “The next market in March will be a Friday night market, we found it was way to warm, however it is the Pilbara and people do deal with

it everyday,” he said. “The good thing is that everyone is sweaty and everyone is equal today. “Lots of people are getting bargains and there is more trash ‘n treasure then artsy-fartsy stuff.” Also on the day, people were able to purchase bacon and egg burgers cooked by Mezzie and also cool drinks were on offer. Bazz said that the event was really well patronised by everyone and all of the comments had been really positive. “One lady even said that is was about time to see someone follow through with what they were going to do, so I am happy to take that one on board,” he said. “I wanted to buy a lamp that was only $3 but some lady beat me to it.” The KVC would like to thank the public for getting so involved with the markets. “It wouldn’t have taken off like it did without the public taking it on as much as they have,” Bazz said.

5000 breeding ewes,” Ruth said. “Eight years ago we imported a sheep breed from South Africa, the Afrino.” “It is a true dual purpose sheep as its meat quality is a cross breed sheep and at the same time producing the fine wool quality, similar to that of the merino.” Ruth said the pair started the Muka Meats business in February 2011 in reaction to the poor prices they, as farmers, received. Yet the price of lamb continued to rise in the shop. “It seems that much of the best WA lamb is exported,” she said. “We have been able to provide a quality product at a fair price.”

“We later added, as people were asking for them, beef, pork, chicken and some fish, which we buy from WA Producers.” The Maddock’s sell the majority of their product in bulk and fresh frozen. “We are able to sell the freshest possible produce, because we grow them ourselves. We also have some lamb products for individual sale,” she said. “Our prices are extremely competitive and the quality is of a high standard.” So head down to the Caltex Roadhouse on Tambrey Drive on Monday, February 27 and the Community Centre car park in Wickham on Tuesday, February 28, both between 9am and 5pm.

Crawford Realty recently showed how important getting involved with the community is to them, when they donated money and time to a local cricket team who is raising funds for the McGrath Foundation. Crawford Realty licensee Mark Pages-Oliver said Crawford Realty really wanted to get behind the McGrath Foundation, as they find it important to get behind community events. “The message and the work that the McGrath foundation does aligns very well with us, as a business and the community as well,” he said. “We have donated some money and cut them a cheque,

which is one thing, but the big thing is the time we are donating out of our own personal lives.” “We have a few staff coming down to help with the barbeque, shake the tin and do whatever we can do to help.” He said that Crawford Realty gets asked about sponsorship quiet a lot, so they have be very careful as to who they want to sponsor and who they would like to get involved with. “This was obviously a no brainer for us, because breast cancer touches the lives of so many people in Australia,” he said. “And at the end of the day it generates a lot of community spirit, people like to get behind a good cause just like we do.”

CARE’s first cleanup for 2012 Communities Against Rubbishing our Environment (CARE) will be holding their first cleanup, a short and sharp cleanup to be precise, for the 2012 Cleanup Australia Day on Sunday, March 4. They will be cleaning up the verges and roadside along Madigan Road. A short pre-cleanup briefing will be held at 7:45am at the Gap Ridge

(Pluto) Camp visitors car park. CARE will provide sunscreen, cold water, cleanup bags and a limited supply of gloves - if people have a spare pair then bring them along. They also highly recommend high visibility or brightly coloured clothing as they will be working alongside a road. If people would like to

cleanup another area around town, they can register with the CARE group. CARE will then arrange to give people a supply of plastic bags and will collect the rubbish at the end of the day. Sodexo will be hosting a BBQ for clean-up volunteers from 10am at Gap Ridge. For more information, contact CARE on Dan Pederson on 0429 045 535.

Green Machine to talk about energy solutions By Courtney Bertling The Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Renewablelogic are proud to present the Green Machine, Danny Green, who will be in Karratha on February 29. Danny Green will be in town to show people why Renewablelogic is his first choice for sustainable energy solutions. Renewablelogic’s general manager Brent Gillard said that Renewablelogic is a subsidiary of local data and communications company, Cablelogic. “Already well established in the Perth area, Renewablelogic will support Cablelogic by expanding on the services they offer to include a number of sustainable energy solutions to the residential and commercial markets,” he said. “This event is intended to give the Karratha businesses an opportunity

to learn more about the benefits of sustainable energy in the Pilbara.” The Green Machine said that as a father of two young kids, the future of the world’s environment is important to him. “So I have teamed up with Renewablelogic to promote the benefits of sustainable energy products,” he said. “We all use power, we all depend on it for day to day activities and that comes at a cost. “So it’s important that we all know how we can use this resource as efficiently as possible.” Solutions that will be touched on include solar power, solar hot water, LED lighting and energy auditing. For your chance to be apart of this presentation being held at the Tambrey Function Centre on February 29 starting at 6.30pm, contact Brittney at the KDCCI on 9144 1999.

Thiess’ multidisciplinary capabilities, paired with EV LNG Australia’s specialist design and construction expertise in LNG tanks, allows the joint venture to focus on providing storage facilities in this growing sector. By Courtney Bertling The Baynton Benchwarmers cricket team, along with almost 1000 other cricket teams from around Australia, celebrated Stumps Day last weekend where they raised money for the McGrath Foundation. Stumps Day is where cricket teams from all over the country dress in hot pink to help the McGrath Foundation raise funds to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia and increase breast awareness in young Australian women. A story well known in Australia, Jane and Glenn McGrath’s much-publicised experience with breast cancer led to the formation of what has become one of Australia’s most respected and recognised charities, the McGrath Foundation. Today, the McGrath Foundation is considered to be one of Australia’s leading breast cancer support organisations, with over 10,000 Australian families supported by 68 McGrath Breast Care Nurses nationally in the last three years.

• The Baynton Benchwarmers are all pink! Baynton Benchwarmers, Rick Monson said they have been fundraising for the last couple of weeks and we will continue for a few more weeks. “This is the first time we have supported the McGrath Foundation and will continue to for future years,” he said. “It is important because a lot of people are affected by it, either themselves or family and friends and we need to find a cure for it. “My wife’s family have been heavily affected by breast cancer and her father has prostate cancer, so we want to help them and everyone else.”

A number of raffles were held including a barbeque pack, a seafood raffle and lots of other goodies including a dinner for two at the All Seasons Hotel. Mr Monson said they have had so many businesses sponsor them in their effort to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation. “It has been unbelievable; a lot of businesses were forthcoming with prizes for the raffles,” he said. “We had a target of $1000, but we have already surpassed that, so we will just see where we end up.”

Nutrition is essential when it comes to energy and vitality for the whole family. Healthy nutrition is vital for health and longevity. Helpful tips to create fun with healthy nutrition: 1. Make food exciting for children... set the table differently to normal mundane days. Try a new plate or bowl, a different placemat or place a flower or a rock beside the plate. Adding nature helps create harmony and balance. 2. Take all processed and packet food away and strive to educate and affirm to your child why it is vital to eat healthy food. 3. Make special drinks with water by adding a new glass, fresh mint or coriander, lemon, lime or ice. 4. Make a face or a flower with raw food on plate consisting of fresh fruits, sprouts, vegetables; add brown rice, legumes, or herbs. 5. Practice new habits in the supermarket. Say no to all junk food. Be aware of overfeeding your child and family with things that make you lose completely your natural healthy instinct for food.

President Shaun Barry said they have made some changes to the track which he hopes people will like. “We have changed the design of the track so you can see the little kids easier without going out there,” he said. “We are also getting shade up in the pit area for parents with kids and we are restricting the bikes that ride through the pits so it is not as dangerous for kids.” What Barry wants to see with the club, is for it to become more family friendly, and by doing so, the club will hold more Family Fun Days. “We are planning to make the club more family friendly and safer for kids,” he said. “What we have achieved so far since the starting the new committee, I am very proud of and I hope the riders and audience appreciate it.” The first race meet will be held on March 18 as a Family Fun Day consisting of a few activities, games, challenges and some fun riding. Barry said people, including both boys and girls, should join the club because there is just something about it that makes it interesting. “It is fun, exhilarating and it gives you an adrenalin rush, being in the air as you make a jump,” he said. He said a few more sponsors have come on board for this year to help out with machinery and fuel. Another thing new for the club will be a couple of enduros, which will be held throughout the year. “Enduros are basically a three-four hour race, which is slower and longer than other race meets,” he said. “Because you will ride for 30kms, which can take four hours. “We used to hold them about six years ago but it slowly faded. “A few people around town are interested in competing in them, so we may as well take it up.” For more information, contact the president Shaun Barry on 0427 346 204 or head down to the Family Fun Day race meet on March 18.

Lightning cuts championships short By Janine Wain Karratha Amateur Swimming Club held its first Club Age Championships last weekend. Club Championship events see swimmers competing in their own age division as opposed to club nights where they are seeded by time. The meet commenced with the 50m freestyle, where Stevie Stanley and Laken Wain took out first place, over eight seconds ahead of their nearest rivals in the eight and under event. Second place went to newcomers Emily Krueger and Harry Gualter, with Axel Stanley taking out third place in the boy’s event. A mere four hundredths of a second separated third and fourth placed Abbygail Bushby and Lily Anastazjew. Abby Bozanich, Keldon Wain, Mikaela Wilson and Zane Smith picked up first place in the nine and 10-yearold events. Eleven-year-olds Jacynta Felix and Ross Rann finished well ahead of their nearest rivals, with Felix clocking a PB time of 36.96. Lily Moore, David McKinnon, Allanah Baxter and Matthew Oronce touched the wall first in the 12-year-old and thirteen and over 50m freestyle and backstroke events. In the eight and under 50m backstroke, Stevie Stanley and Laken Wain continued to lead the field. Abby Bozanich and Keldon Wain touched the wall first in the nine-year-old event, with Tedd Stanley pipping Jordan Bushby to the post for second spot by less than half a second in the boy’s event. In the usually very competitive 10-year-old girls

• Making a run for it

100m backstroke, Isobel Norris had an impressive win, clocking in 6 seconds ahead of her nearest rival, Mikaela Wilson. Harry Eykyn, Ross Rann and Jacynta Felix never looked threatened in their age divisions, touching well ahead of their nearest rivals. In the 200m freestyle, 12-year-old Lily Moore had an impressive win, finishing almost 30 seconds ahead of the competition. David McKinnon, Allanah Baxter and Matthew Oronce also dominated their 200m swims. The final event of the evening was the 50m breastroke, where Stevie Stanley and Laken Wain added another win to their night. The highly anticipated 10-year-old girls breastroke event proved to be an exciting finish, with Isobel Norris taking first place ahead of Grace Keogh, with Mikaela Wilson and Finlay Moore not far behind. Ailish Neeson easily won the 12-year-old event, with Georgina Bushby and Talia Crowhurst fighting it out for second and third place. In the 13 and over girl’s event, Allanah Baxter continued her winning streak, touching just ahead of Macie Bennetts. Unfortunately, the boys nine open breastroke events were cancelled due to bad weather and will be swam at a later date. Training is now in full speed, with the Country Pennants team swimming in Collie next week and the upcoming North West Open. Competition is sure to heat up and be fierce at the next club championship event.

Brown and Neeson tie! By Courtney Bertling Round six of the 2011/2012 Nickol Bay Triathlon Club season was held last weekend, and with Bevan Stirling back for the year, he cleaned up first place with 3:28 minutes to spare. In the long course, Kate Shryock was the first person out of the water in 9:47 minutes with Todd Rintoul close behind. During the bike ride, it was a close contest between Ben Leishman and Steve Bertling, constantly overtaking each other. However, Leishman separated from Bertling during the run coming in second behind Stirling with Bertling in third. In the short course, Matthew Orrance was first out of the water with Peter Newhouse hot on his heels. It was all eyes on mother-ofthree Tania Neeson and recent first placer, Wayne Brown, as they pushed themselves to the limits, staying neck and neck all the way through to the end, resulting in a tie for first place! Robert Ingelbro came in second, 47 seconds behind Brown and Neeson and Jaydon Clewg finishing in third in a time of 45 minutes. For the enticer course, the two regulars Amelia Greensil and James

Mackinnon took to the water with Mackinnon out of the water 31 seconds before Greensil. Greensil made up with her bike and run times reaching the finish line 1:56 minutes before Mackinnon. And in the junior’s course, there were a couple of new comers, including local swimmers Laken and Keldon Wain who were third and fourth out of the water after Nino Antounucci and Lily Moore. Regular, Antounucci showed his real athletic side finishing his swim and bike the fastest and coming in first with a time of 12:54 minutes. It was then a race to the finish line between Kyle Aleckson and Lily Moore. As the cheering got louder, Aleckson and Moore pounded the pavement with Aleckson taking second place, only one second in front of Moore. Anyone wanting to try their first ‘tri’ is most welcome to come along. It’s all about participation and the NBTC team guarantee you’ll get hooked! All events have a long, short and enticer course option as well as an event for junior participants. The next event will be held at the Karratha Aquatic Centre on Sunday, February 25.

• Bevan Stirling off on his run • Pilbara Echo journalist CB with the St Luke’s students from the sports program

CB inspires next generation By V Swans regional development officer

• Finlay Moore finishing her bike ride

Sharing her education, experience and expertise with the year 10 group, Bertling, CB to her new found team mates, showed the group all the tricks and traps of journalism and in particular, sports writing. • Kyle Aleckson and Lily Moore race to the finish

• Entice winner, Amelia Greensil

• Newcomer - Keldon Wain

The Pilbara Echo’s number one journalist Courtney Bertling delivered an inspirational lecture to the St Luke’s College specialist sport program students on Wednesday as part of their quest to become the next great sports writers in town.

• Steve Bertling, Peter Newhouse and Todd Rintoul

The session finished with the students demonstrating their skills with an article encapsulating what they had learned with the products indicating that a new group of contributors to the Echo are not far from earning their right to become a published writer. CB will mentor the group over the next weeks and after a follow up session, we should see a new group of sports writers spreading their love and passion of their sport.
