Disappointed We recently arrived at the local Karratha Airport at 6.30pm. As our arranged lift couldn’t make it, we ordered a taxi. We were then left to wait until 8.30pm before a taxi arrived. Another lady who also ordered a taxi was waiting to go to the hospital as her husband was seriously ill, ending up getting help from a local airport employee who took pity on her and took her to the hospital himself. I find it ridiculous to have to wait so long. The taxi driver himself only picked us up as he had to go to the same destination on a booking for Rio Tinto staff, otherwise we would still be waiting. Is there any way this service can be taken a bit more seriously in this town? It is disgraceful and embarrassing to the community to have such a poor necessary service. I am just so disappointed that I felt it necessary to complain and make others aware of this dis-service and not to rely on a service that should be a lot more organised and manned. Landscapes on display A new exhibition is on display in the arrivals terminal at Karratha Airport, entitled Landscapes by Katie Groves. A showcase of the raw beauty of the Pilbara, Karratha-based photographer Katie Groves said the collection of photographs was a result of inspiration, extensive travel and patience, waiting hours at a time for light and scenery to merge together to create a perfect image. “I’m a born and bred, down-toearth, country girl, who has a love for
photographing natural environments,” she said. “The real beauty comes out with the simple details and I embrace this.” Her powerful and soulful photographs highlight the personal connections she feels towards her loved ones and her beloved red earth. Landscapes will be on display until May 24 with all pieces available for sale and additional photos available for viewing on her website at www.groveton.com.au.

Vintage car for Something quite different was travelling in the Pilbara recently, which had other road users looking back to see if they were imagining seeing a vintage car chugging along the coastline. Yep, they sure weren’t imagining anything. A small group of air-cooled, Franklin car enthusiasts, are travelling around Australia in a restored 1927 American Franklin 11b. Owners, David Rundle and Geoff Morris, took the challenge to raise money for the medivac charity CareFlight. They departed from Sydney back in August last year and arrived in Karratha

on Friday, April 20. It was back in America, where Mr Rundle found the car - which is now the only road-registered Franklin in Australia - when he stumbled across it in a broken down shed in Arizona. The car, which had been in the shed for 34 years before being shipped to Australia, is what Mr Rundle calls ‘unique’ and ‘worth saving’. It has been a long, hard road for the group of friends, breaking down in the middle of nowhere, including breaking an axle at the Leichardt River crossing just before entering the Northern Territory. “We were on the local radio saying how we broke an axle and had no way to fix

it,” Mr Rundle said. “A resident called Mark Brustolin heard our story on the radio and called up saying he could fix it. “He then welded and shaped Toyota parts to make a Franklin axle. “I think it’s an even better design what Franklin made,” he laughed. But why would anyone want to travel around one of the hottest countries in the world, especially with no air con? “A lot of young people have lost the spirit of adventure,” Mr Rundle said. “I want people to get out and enjoy life; go camping and have fun outside, not be tucked away inside.
“Our intention is to be the first Franklin to circumnavigate our country without necessarily following bitumen.” Mr Rundle is a definite motor maniac, still holding the record for the fastest motorbike journey from England to India in 1970. His partner even laughs at all the vintage cars that are parked at their home in Sydney. Just by cash donations, the group have raised over $8000 for CareFlight, which does not include the donations made over the phone direct to CareFlight. If you would like to support the run, you can make an online donation at www.franklinaustrek.org.

Now look, getting back to basics, the whole point of my column is to be an ambassador for embarrassment; to shine a light on our failings (which are generally mine) and get you off the hook. With this in mind, I offer up one of my most embarrassing embarrassments to date. It’s the event parents dread. It’s the #epic fail to end all #epic fails.
Like me Imagine that you locked yourself out of the house like me. With kids in tow, all hot and weary, grizzling, like me.
Imagine you had bruised Gluteus Maximus like me. A purple puddle muddle fuddle duddle. Just like me.
Imagine that before this from your car, locked out, like me. The battery on the key’d gone flat and useless, just like me.
Imagine then, before this even getting fuel, like me, you filled the tank without your handbag with you there, like me.
Imagine that before this you got bogged and just like me, the Max Trax had been stolen, bright bright orange, just like me.
Imagine then, just minutes back your credit card, like me, Was something you’d just cancelled as you’d lost it. Yes, that’s me.
Imagine in the hours leading up, you slid, like me, upon that ripe banana (no, no joke) and fell like me.
Imagine that you joked, “Oh well, at least it is not me who’s lost it then goes petrol fuelling.
Nothing worse.” Not me! Imagine then, you raised your hand. Yes you, go on, not me. Said, “Isn’t it exciting that the kids’ school’s back. Yippee!” Imagine that you dressed the kids in uniforms, like me. And sent them out to school when school’s not on just yet. Who me? Yup.
Red Dog at home at the KVC Last week, the Karratha Visitor Centre President David “Harry” Hipworth and Centre Manager Bazz Harris accepted the signed Memorandum of understanding (MOU) from Nelson Woss, Red Dog Movie producer and claimed the merchandise rights to produce a range of Official Red Dog Movie products. This will see the Karratha Visitor Centre become the distribution point for Movie Merchandise across the country, donating a portion of profits to SAFE locally and the Shenton Park Dog Home in Perth, with a percentage of annual sales divided between the two. Visitor Centre President, Harry Hipworth, said what a great way to keep the spirit of Red Dog alive and well at the KVC. “While Red Dog was the Pilbara wanderer, he will always be the Dampier Dog!” he said.
EAST PILBARA SHIRE UPDATE Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara
April 2012
President’s Message
Skate Park Development
The middle of the year is fast approaching us which brings another Shire update for the East Pilbara community. The Shire of East Pilbara Youth Centre hosted its first ‘Youth Day Out’ event in conjunction with Youth Week. This was a great way for the Shire to engage with various youth and children services which resulted in a great day out for all children involved.
New resources such as lockable bins, a water fountain and solar lights have been ordered for the Newman Skate Park. These upgrades will be occurring over the next few weeks. Clearing of the vegetation will also take place which will then increase visibility, deter anti-social behaviour and improve safety.
The upcoming Council meeting will be held on the 27th of April, 2012 at 10am. On the 12th of May, 2012 the Councillors will be at the Newman Boulevard Shopping Centre for a community meet and greet, between 10am-12pm. Next Council Meeting will be scheduled on the 25th of May, 2012 at the Newman Chamber Councils- starting at 10am. I would like to thank the East Pilbara community for their patience on the road developments on Newman Drive and Kalgan Drive and would like to encourage residents to help the Shire by participating in the Picture Your East Pilbara campaign. We are asking you to fill out a short questionnaire about what you want to see in the East Pilbara in the next 10 years. These questionnaires have been dropped off to all postal boxes and private residency in the East Pilbara community. Look out for the Picture Your East Pilbara drop off points throughout in Newman, Nullagine and Marble Bar.

Youth Day Out YOUR FUTURE’S IN THE MAIL The Pilbara is known around the world for its rugged beauty, red earth, and vast mineral deposits; with your help the Pilbara can also be known as a great place to live, full of ideas, and growing development. There are 10,000 possibilities sitting 10 years ahead of us, and it only takes 10 minutes to tell us where you think that should be.

The Shire of East Pilbara’s Youth Centre hosted its first Youth Day Out where an estimation of 80 children and youths attended. The theme for National Youth Week was Imagine.Create. Inspire- which was certainly what the participants did. Stalls from various youth and child services were engaging with various age groups by celebrating and recognising the value of all young Australians to their communities by giving them an opportunity to express their ideas and opinions. A big thankyou to everyone involved and the Shire’s Youth Centre- as we look forward for another eventful day for 2013.

Wickham Community Information Day •Native Title deal focuses on sustainability
Native Title deal focuses on sustainability The Ngarlawangga people of the Pilbara region have announced an agreement with Rico Resources over their Wonmunna project within the Ngarlawangga native title claim. The agreement focuses on building a relationship between the parties to develop sustainable, long-term business and employment opportunities for the Ngarlawangga community. It is based on shared objectives of employment and contracts for Ngarlawangga people on Rico Resources projects. To this end, a skills audit of the Ngarlawangga community is being undertaken to help community members identify and access opportunities for training, employment, and business ventures. The agreement includes financial compensation to the Ngarlawangga people and recognises the importance of Aboriginal culture and the Ngarlawangga people’s responsibility to care for their heritage sites. It also provides Rico Resources with all of the native title approvals needed for their Wonmunna Project. Ngarlawangga elder Maisey Hyland said
that Rico resources have listened to the Ngarlawangga community and they have listened to them. “We have a good relationship with RICO even though we are a small group and they are a small company,” he said. Ngarlawangga elder Dianne Limerick said that in the short while they have been negotiating with Rico Resources, they made a lot of progress and they are happy and pleased that they have signed an agreement together. Simon Hawkins, Chief Executive Officer of Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC), said that Rico Resources has adopted a relationship-based approach to these negotiations, and this agreement is designed to help the Ngarlawangga people meet their aspirations as a community. “The company has shown their commitment to these goals by implementing the skills audit before the agreement was even signed,” he said. “This mining agreement is about both parties supporting each other for years to come.”

Minister takes his hat off to the SBC By Courtney Bertling Minister for Small Business Simon O’Brien visited Karratha recently to inspect the Cape Preston development and to listen to challenges facing small businesses. “I wanted to inspect the massive Cape Preston, City Pacific development and liaise with that company, see how their progress is going and make sure the Government connected with the people that are making decisions and carrying out operations there, which was very interesting,” he said. “I also wanted to listen to particular challenges that face small businesses in the Pilbara as there are challenges everywhere. “So, to do that, we are engaging with small businesses, I am having a link forum with a whole bunch of small businesses and we are doing a series of those around the state.” Mr O’Brien said that one thing that the Government is doing in particular is the Pilbara Cities initiative. “Which is very much about providing affordable housing, and freeing up land so that business
and residents can be developed and we are seeing some great outcomes already in Karratha,” he said. “It is going to revive the Karratha town centre - I went down this morning to see the development and it is quite amazing.” Problems that were outlined to the Minister in the town including small businesses closing down, including the Dampier Post Office. Mr O’Brien said that the problems outlined are symptoms of the dynamics that are working in the Pilbara that Government is keen to understand. “Government is keen to understand those problems and take the actions that we can to help the businesses stay afloat to help them get access to accommodation so they can continue to be viable,” he said. The minister believes small businesses in Karratha should use the Small Business Centre as a source for advice. “I have a great deal of respect for the Small Business Centres right around the country including here and in Port Hedland where the centres have been particularly challenged.”

Brida celebrates milestone Earlier this month Pilbara local Aboriginal owned and operated gardening business, Brida Pty Limited and Rio Tinto, celebrated Brida’s achievement of 83,000 hours without a lost time injury; the equivalent of 750 working days. This achievement was celebrated in Karratha and included a presentation from Rio Tinto recognising Brida employees’ commitment to safe working practices. Brida supervisor Brett Singh said it was great to celebrate this big milestone for a small company.
“A big safety milestone like this is what comes from that attitude.” Rio Tinto general manager Accommodation and Towns Operations Alistair Baron mirrored Mr Singh’s comments. “Brida and Rio Tinto have been working together since 2008 and over this time some amazing projects and developments have been initiated and implemented,” Mr Baron said.

Artwork installed in Bulgarra Standing more than six metres high, the latest addition to the Shire of Roebourne’s growing public art collection was installed at the Frank Butler Community Centre last week. Providing a unique entry statement to the new Community Centre in Bulgarra, the artwork, titled Human Movement, incorporates striking colours and imagery that are fitting of the popular sporting precinct.
Electronic Stability Control can help reduce your chances of running off the road – the leading cause of serious injuries on country roads. ESC detects the moment your car begins to skid and starts applying individual brakes to individual wheels to help keep you in control. It’s just one of the lifesaving features you’ll find in vehicles with a 5 Star ANCAP safety rating. So if you’re in the market for a new car, choose one with ESC.

Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said this was the first of many major public artwork commissions, currently underway by the Shire. “We are committed to incorporating public art into all community infrastructure projects. “This artwork will be an exciting first addition to the Shire’s emerging public art scene,” Councillor White- Hartig said. “I am confident this artwork will be enjoyed by all users of the new Centre as well as the Bulgarra Sporting Precinct.” Jason Hirst, the creative brains behind the artwork, has been in Karratha since Monday to oversee the installation. “It’s one thing to draw and design the artwork, it’s another to see it come to life,” Mr Hirst said.

• An artists impression of what the Karratha Leisure Centre will look like
KLC needs community funding The Karratha Leisure Complex is set to become the Pilbara’s premier indoor sport and aquatic centre, but they need help from the community. The Shire of Roebourne has recently engaged the services of APP Corporation to assist in securing Foundation Corporate Partners for the Karratha Leisure Complex, currently under construction. Shire of Roebourne CEO Simon Kot said that the Project Budget that has been considered and endorsed by Council seeks total funding of $63,750,000 for the project. “Based on current commitments the funding target balance is $8,050,000,” he said. “In conjunction with APP, the Shire is therefore seeking corporate financial support from influential companies active in the West Pilbara area to contribute to this worthwhile major community project. “There will be four tiers of involvement for the select Foundation Corporate Partnerships, which will provide a wide range of benefits commensurate with your support. “The Shire would appreciate your serious consideration to becoming a Foundation Corporate Partner of the Karratha Leisure Complex and we look forward to confirmation of your involvement prior to the end of the Financial Year.”
According to Mr Kot, the APP Senior Representatives, Peter Kay and Amanda Bridgeman will be contacting businesses in the near future to provide all the necessary background information and to arrange further communication to discuss this proposal in detail. For more information, contact Peter Kay on peter.kay@app.com.au. Benefits to businesses who decide to become involved in funding the Karratha Leisure Centre include: You will be a Foundation Partner of the Karratha Leisure Complex (KLC) and receive special acknowledgement that will include a permanent sign at the venue, notation in all marketing collateral, use of KLC logo on your marketing material and a special certificate presented at the Launch function. Partner logo prominently displayed on the KLC website – with direct links to the Partner website. Partner signage display space available at suitable position within the KLC (Partner to supply). Invitation and agreed number of tickets to selected official KLC functions throughout the year. Provided with agreed quantities of KLC merchandise (Polo Shirt, Cap, etc). And much more.

Whalesharks, art and games The Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival 2012, will be held from May 25 - 27, in and around the town of Exmouth. The festival will interest all ages with activities including a fun run, a float parade, bands, seafood displays, aerial displays, circus and fire show, kid’s beach games as well as photo and art exhibitions. Dr Brad Norman will give information on the whale shark and the photo ID program and Gulliver the giant whale shark will be on display. There will also be other visiting scientists and research groups displaying their findings. To start the festivities there will be a cocktail party at the Novotel Ningaloo Resort with Montuno, an exciting Latin/salsa band, as well as performances by Theaker the Aerial Queen. Also at Novotel Ningaloo, an art exhibition by Sam Lane will open on Friday night. Sam uses mixed media to give a modern approach reflecting an ancient landscape.
Mike Elrington, solo blues and roots artist; Kathy from Zumba; Sparkles, a children’s entertainer and her group of puppet characters will all be entertaining families. Fremantle musicians, Tom Fisher and the Layabouts, and Dilip and the Davs, who return after being a big hit at last year’s festival, will have everyone up and dancing at Grace’s Tavern on Saturday night. Darren Cossill, general manager, Novotel Ningaloo Resort and the chairman of the Whaleshark Festival committee, said thanks to the community’s continued support and our generous supporters, they have re-established the festival as a successful annual event on the state calendar. Ningaloo Reef is a name recognised nationally and internationally as a ‘premier marine environment’, home to the most predictable, seasonal aggregations of whale sharks in the world.
The Jillinbiri Weavers from Carnarvon will be at the Exmouth Shire Hall from 10 am Friday.
The festival highlights the community’s relationship with the annual visit of the whale shark.
They have been together since 2005 and were the first Artists-in-Residence at the Gwoonwardu Mia Heritage and Cultural Centre, Carnarvon.
This event is supported by Eventscorp, Department of Regional Development and Lands and Royalties for Regions.
They use banana leaves and trunk fibre, palm fruit stems, sand dune spinifex and copper wire to create their original designs.
Festival packages which include whale shark swims, accommodation and tickets to festival events are available at the Exmouth Visitor Centre.

I found the little bird one evening while out walking after a cyclone. It was on the footpath near the sewage farm in Dampier. It took me a minute to realise what I was seeing and the bird made no attempt to escape when I picked it up. I cut my walk short and headed for home. My assumption was that it was blown off course by the cyclonic winds and was suffering exposure. The first step was to get fluids into it and then leave it in a warm dark spot for it to rest. It was offered fluids at frequent intervals, then left to sleep overnight. When I uncovered the cage the next day I was greeted by an active little bird showing lots of curiosity and it started whistling and singing when it saw me. I was even more amazed to find it come straight to

the nectar mix I offered it, followed by a feast of mealworms. I then had to try and identify what it was, as I thought initially it was a common silvereye with which most people would be familiar, but we do not get this far north. Silver eyes are in the same family but bigger with grey feathers. What we do get here is a Yellow white eye, which inhabits the mangroves around the north of the coast. This made sense, as I had a feeling it was not a town dweller. These white eyes live and
Insects are their staple diet, but small fruit and nectar are taken when the opportunity presents. They keep in constant contact with each other by whistles and chirps answering each other as they go. Have you ever sat in the tinny fishing up a creek and just listened to the bird song? Chances are some of the sound is from a group of white eyes. During breeding season both parents build the nest, brood the eggs and feed the young. The little guy was kept for a few days to build its strength, then taken to the mangroves at King bay where it needed no help flying from the cage to freedom.

Last Sunday, for only the second year, more than 100 people turned up at Whim Creek to honour fallen soldiers, including the five brothers of the Lockyer family who served for Australia.
The Pilbara Regiment conducted a catafalque party mount before the eldest Lockyer son, Allen Lockyer, welcomed everyone to the service. Chaplin Bill Phillips from the Pilbara Regiment said that the service was to acknowledge the stories of the Lockyer brothers, five young Aboriginal men, who in their day would have been seen as outcasts and rejected by many in society. “Their story represents so many untold stories of Indigenous men and women who have served their country in the defence forces,” he said. “The Lockyer brothers represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders from across this land who chose to serve their country because it was right thing to do and because freedom comes at a price. “Their sacrifices should challenge us all.” As read in the prayer of thanksgiving, “Today, we gather to remember and honour the sacrifice made by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait

• Carol and Bob Wyssenbach - being an army wife has its challenges
Story of a digger By Margaret Bertling
THIS WEEK AT DRAKE INTERNATIONAL Seeking Expressions of Interest for: • Experienced Customer Service Administrator • Dump Truck & Front End Please forward resumes through to: Karratha@au.drakeintl.com

As the last post sent a haunting sound through the air on Wednesday morning, heads bowed in silent and unified respect during the ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Karratha. Among the crowd, a digger sat quietly with his medals pinned to his chest and his mind deep in thought for the mates he served alongside in Malaya more than 50 years ago. It was in 1956 and Robert (Bob) Wissenbach was just 18 years old when he signed up for the army. Full of hope and promise and riding on the back of stories from his father and grandfather about the honour to “serve one’s country”, he set sail at 19 aboard the New Australia bound for conflict zones in Malaya. “On the boat it was great, it was just like the old diggers in the Second World War because everything was so like what our fathers told us we were all going on a ship and all going to another country to fight a war of sorts,” he remembers. Anticipating a story of a crying Mum standing on the wharf waving her boy goodbye, I ask how his mother had coped. I realise the generations are very different from his response. His mum was made of tougher stuff than I am as a mum. She wasn’t scared nor was she crying and not the chaotic mess I imagined – as I would be if I said goodbye to my son who happens to be 19; I feel my heart lurch in my chest at the mere thought of him going away to war. In 1956, people had grown up through two world wars and were somewhat hardened to the fact. “She just wanted us to be careful but she was tough lady too because she had three brothers in the Second World War and my mother come from a tough school… she knew how to cope with that,” said Bob. “It was good feeling very similar to what they used to say about the Second World War, it was just another big adventure for us something to go and see and learn and new places to see.” Bob’s life was about to be coloured in a rich tapestry of experiences and lessons, but the ship he ventured into
the world on had not gone far when the first trouble struck. On the way to Malaya the unlucky crew collided with a French oil tanker in the middle of the night, as they sailed around Cape York. “I remember it was dark, we had no pilots on board and we all had to go to our muster stations and get ready to jump overboard and all this sort of thing which we [eventually] didn’t have to do,” he said. The first lesson the young soldier was about to learn was the physics of 600 men on board a ship, that may sink in the middle of the night, being told to go to muster stations. “You find 300 people want to get downstairs to get their life jackets and 300 want to get upstairs and get into the life boats, so it was a bit of a shemozzle,” he said with a dry chuckle. I see in his eyes the experience has burned into his memory, but at the same time a boyish coolness of abandoning ship was not lost on the 19-year-old young man, who still dances in the old digger’s soul. “I thought it would be a bit cool [to jump overboard] but I’m glad we didn’t have to because the next morning there were a lot of sharks circling the boat,” he said. The engineers were able to get ashore, load up with a good supply of cement and in true Aussie digger style, patched the boat and she continued on her journey up through Singapore to her final destination, where the boy became a man, with two years of service against terrorists in Malaysia. “That conflict went for 12 years spanning form 1948 to 1960,” he recalls. As frightening as the experience may be, it was all taken in stride as part of the era that accepted wartime conflict as part of their very existence. “People weren’t frightened like they are today,” he said. “Yesterday, soldiering was an adventure and it was more or less the done thing. “Nowadays, it’s taken a lot more seriously, there’s a lot more thought into it is fair dinkum you can get killed, but we were very lucky we didn’t, but it was just the way people used to live back then.”

After serving between Australia and Malaya, Bob recalls heading into Borneo for four and a half months, the limit put on the tour of duty for that region by the Australian army. “You went over there and you took your place into battle line between Malaya and along the border and you fought a border war,” he said gazing forward as if transporting himself back in time for a brief moment. When asked what his most vivid memory is, the old man says simply, “Getting shot at.” “And your mates,” he adds. Talking of his mates, his face lights up. “You have all the confidence in the world; you put your life in your mates’ hands,” he said. “You just totally rely on them. There was no other saving grace and no one you trust as much as your army mates,” he said. It’s still true today. I look around and see the crisp khaki uniforms and shoes shined to a mirror finish. The bond is obvious, he is right. The mateship is still very much here and on this day, at the Taylor Barracks in Karratha, the connection is palpable. This is a very special breed of men and women. The old digger looks around… ”Yep, your mates. I learned the value of your mates. We appreciated the care we got and your mates would lay down their lives for you,” he softly says, Within earshot, his wife of more than 45 years, Carol, nods. “The mates come before everything. An army wife will tell you that and we accept that. They are so reliant on their mates it does affect their lives for the rest of their life,” she says manner-offactly. Just three years into their marriage, the couple made a decision that Bob would leave the army to have a “normal” life and the couple settled in Dampier. “We came up for a trip and he loved it, then Hamersley Iron opened up in 1969 and the rest is history. We are still here,” laughs Carol. The couple agree Hamersley Iron was a loyal workplace and they have enjoyed a rich life in the town. As we close our chat, I have a new found respect for our diggers and value their opinion even more than I did before meeting Bob Wissenbach. I ask him what he feels about Australia today. “My Australia’s good but today’s Australia has lost its way,” he says solemnly. “The stand up for your mates has been torn away, they are not looking after people like that anymore. “In the army there are still blokes like that, but I feel sorry for civilians and they live a civilian life and they walk home from work or something and two or three blokes decide to bash them up for a few dollars. It’s un-Australian and it’s a cowardice act.” He has wistfulness in his eyes as looks around the sea of uniforms and the unspoken bond that is clearly evident. “We need to get back to good Aussie core values and look after our mates,” he says firmly. “If we could do that, that would be fantastic.”

Supporting local businesses
Pilbara residents need to support local businesses to ensure they remain viable. Small businesses employ a large percentage of local staff and provide much needed goods and services to residents of the town. Yet all too often, people wanting to spend their hard earned money overlook local businesses. There is a general assumption in the Pilbara that our retailers are more expensive, but if shoppers took the time to look they would be pleasantly surprised. A lot of local retailers have very good quality products at very competitive prices. With so much of the world connected through the www, customer service has become more important than ever, creating the need for local businesses to brush up their skills and start creating a desire for locals to want to shop locally. It’s small businesses that are the lifeblood of any community. Families who live locally and
operate their own businesses are more likely to purchase from other local businesses. They are often the best advocates for the region in which they live and work, being more likely to sponsor local sporting clubs and donate to non profit organizations, than large multinationals. When you shop locally, you are keeping money in the local economy. Jobs are created and as a consumer, your shopping choices become larger. But it’s not just about price. Research has shown that people will long forget the price but remember the experience above all else. While saving money on the cost of a product purchased elsewhere, the long-term benefit of shopping locally is far greater than the dollars saved. Only a local business can offer you the experience of touching and feeling the product you wish to buy. Only through local purchasing, can a member
of staff sell you the features and benefits of a product, comparing it with others they may also sell, allowing you to make an informed decision on the correct product for you. Costly spending mistakes are negligible when you shop locally, because you’ll have no need to spend money on returning goods, which are unsuitable or damaged in transit. When you shop locally, you aren’t just purchasing the product; you are buying the experience and knowledge base of the local business too. You are buying protection from damaged or unsuitable products. You are buying ‘back to local store’ warranty and follow up service. You’re contributing to the local economy. So, next time you are looking to spend your hard earned dollars, consider whether the product or service might already be available locally. Give it a go, you might be pleasantly surprised!

• The education assistants during an activity to show the synapses in a person’s brain
Let’s Read to have fun By Courtney Bertling Let’s Read training sessions were held last week for members of local schools and associations, to help them understand the need for the program and how to help children through the program. Let’s Read, an initiative of the Centre for Community Child Health, is being implemented across Australia in partnership with The Smith Family. The program sees parents and carers receive reading books and support, to encourage them to have fun reading with their young children. It also helps children develop a love of books and the ability to name letters and play with the sounds of words. Children learn more when something is shown to them as well as explained, so Let’s Read gives parents and carers clear and simple information by providing a “Share and Show” technique. WA Let’s Read co-ordinator Julie Baker conducted the training, showing the development stages in a child from four months,
12 months, 18 months and 3.5 years. Another reason for the training is to ensure that two residents of the Pilbara, Carol Warren and Daphne Trevurza, can train others in the Pilbara without the need to bring trainers up from Perth. One of the sessions was held at Pegs Creek Primary School, while the other was held at the Karratha Family Centre. Pegs Creek Primary School principal Lynette Macauley said the training is a great way for the school’s education assistants to learn how to teach and interact with the younger students. “Most of the assistants haven’t had much training with teaching kids, apart from being a parent,” she said. “Some have already done the training but asked to do it again because it was so beneficial. “It’s a good little session; anything that promotes literacy is great as it supports the students.” “In a few weeks we will also run the training for parents.”

• Salute after the Last Post

As Dawn services commenced across Australia, around 1,000 people stood in silence in Karratha waiting for their turn to pay respects to our Diggers. The crowd quietly gathered and took their place outside the Shire of Roebourne offices and in front of the RSL War Memorial in Karratha’s CBD. The sun was yet to break the night sky but that was no deterrent for those acutely aware of what our Diggers, both past and present, continue to do for our country – the greatest sacrifice in laying their lives on the line. As speeches were heard and wreathes were laid at the base of the memorial, the sun gently rose over the town and the first rays of light shone colour over the site. Australian Army personnel from Taylor Barracks stood in honour of their mates. Our police, respectful as always, volunteers and school children, all took the time to remember the sacrifice of men and women through the ages, as they served our country in war times. The suns rays glistened on the memorial plaque as the Last Post was played. Not a word was spoken as the haunting notes pierced the air, a moment of sombre reality of the meaning of the ANZAC Dawn Service.
In respect for their New Zealand comrades, a local Maori group performed the HAKA in a spine tingling performance, which left many onlookers in tears. And as people quietly drifted away, another year passes as we respect and remember those who gave the ultimate in sacrifice for us. The young men, women and boys who patriotically marched into battle during the First World War through to our diggers of today, many of whom never came home but shall remain ageless and eternally dwell in the hearts of Australians. The timeless verse from the poem by English poet Laurence Binyon, which has been used in ANZAC commemorations since 1921, continues to leave an indelible mark on the hearts of Australians young and old. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Lest we forget.

Breakfast of heroes
The gunfire breakfast at the Taylor Barracks on ANZAC Day was where locals, including service men and women, where able to reflect on the people who lost their lives or survived the terrors of war. • Anthony Johnstone, Denis Davey, Damien Casey and Denis Magennis
People were able to socialise and speak about their memories of their friends and families. Many stories were told including a very touching story of a 19-year-old digger who was sent away to war and now resides in Dampier. For more on that story, turn to page 10.

• Karnivool will be in Dampier on June 22 and 23 Exciting news has come out from Karnivool HQ, with the announcement that the 10 legged beast that is Karnivool has now risen from it’s slumbers, and has plans to get a little festive with it’s fans on the “ Melodias Frescas” tour, which will see the band hit the Dampier Mermaid in June. Yes folks, the “Melodias Frescas” tour, translation “Fresh Tunes”, will reveal to the world some of the band’s new material which has been agonised over in Perth over the past year. And tickets for Karnivool’s “Melodias Frescas” tour are on sale now!! Since Karnivool’s last Australian jaunt (a year ago), most of the time has been spent with various members taking a little bit of time off, or on the road with other projects, as well as tinkering around in a studio in Perth, putting the bits and pieces of Karnivool’s third album together.
DJ FL3GGLESS Whether you’re a DJ, in a band, holding a special event or the center of a birthday party, give CB a call.

The global success of “Sound Awake” meant nearly three years of touring globally, so it was definitely time for a little breather.
that on the forthcoming Karnivool DVD, which with shooting now complete, is being edited as we speak and will be available sometime mid this year.
Of course, over the past year, there were a few things thrown in to keep the band busy, including a flying four festivals in four days tour of Europe, which culminated in Karnivool playing to 8000 screaming Dutch fans at Lowlands Festival in The Netherlands.
Even though the band has been busy internationally and somewhat off the radar in Australia, the “Melodias Frescas” Tour will change that.
Karnivool also took the time at the end of 2011 to travel to Mumbai, to headline Mood Indigo Festival, which will surely remain as one of the most memorable shows they have played to date. Having 10,000 Indian fans in an arena singing along to “New Day” in a shower of confetti, will not be forgotten for some time! Hopefully, there will be a taste of
As a collective, Karnivool loves to take new material out on the road to give it a bit of a shake before the band head into the studio, so this tour will give people a glimpse of the Vool’s new musical knickers, as they pirouette across the country. Karnivool will be playing the Mermaid Hotel in Dampier on Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23. The shows are over 18s only. Tickets are available now from www.heatseeker.com.au, Cool Change Karratha and at the Mermaid.
Creamfields launch party Last Saturday, one of the largest dance music festivals featuring DJs and live acts stopped in at the All Season Hotel. Presented by Limelite and Electric Button, local DJS, Cam Myles and Panda started the night, before the Halo Effect took the stage. The two girls worked up the crowd with their sensational singing and mixes on the decks. The crowd had a great time, busting out the moves and singing along with the girls. International day of the Midwife International Day of the Midwife is held on May 5. The day aims to celebrate midwifery and all the dedication and care these professionals bring to one of the most important days in many people’s lives. Here in the Pilbara there is a strong community of young families and many of these families have been lucky enough to have the support and skill of the very special midwives at Nickol Bay Hospital. As a way to celebrate and highlight the importance of midwives’ work many of these women have shared their birthing stories. These stories demonstrate how and why these midwives have meant so much to them and why they hold a special place in their hearts. As Chantelle Dalgarno explained, a year ago she gave birth to her son. “I may not remember my neighbours’ names, I may mix up the race-drivers’ names in the speedway club, and I’ve certainly called my sister by the dog’s name a time or two,” she said. “But I’ll never forget those who were there, supporting me through the most memorable time of my life!”
For the next couple of editions, we will look closely at the importance of midwifery and how it helps people in the community. The first column is written by Joanie Pollock. “I had Sally Collville- my last child born December 12, 2010- and she was awesome, told jokes, made me laugh (until I was in too much pain to laugh out loud but was still laughing in my head). “I came into the hospital first and my partner came afterwards and she joked about the size of his head (he has a big head hehe) and about how I would have to push that out and how her mother told her to find a man with a small head, as that would be the size of the babies heads (haha). “She was excellent, really relaxed the atmosphere and made it an enjoyable experience (as much as it can be when your in immense pain). “But having four kids all at Nickol Bay I have to say my overall best experience was with Sally Collville (I wish I could have had her for all four of my babies.) “She is such a beautiful lady with a great personality and was born for the job; best midwife out and couldnt recommend anyone more!”
Mini-Field of Women Karratha Cancer Support Group and Retravision will display a Mini-Field of Women on May 12 at the front of Retravision Karratha. A Mini-Fields of Women event is for the community to gather together to show support and pay tribute to women and their families affected by breast cancer. The support group will have a visual display of 100 Pink Lady silhouettes on display, symbolising the 14,000 Australian women diagnosed with breast cancer and the 2,600 women who die from it each year. Family and friends will be able to write personal messages on the silhouettes. There will also be a Mother’s Day stall for children who may
have forgotten to buy a little something for their Mum. These items, donated by Retravision, will cost about $5.00. A raffle will also be drawn on the same day. Michelle Louis from the Karratha Cancer Support Group, said she hopes people can come and see the display and maybe write a personal message to someone. She said it is about showing your support and paying tribute to women affected by breast cancer. Gold coin donations would be appreciated on the day. For more information, contact Michelle Louis from the Karratha Cancer Support Group on 0427 852 117.
• Mini Dog Volunteers with Calvin
Guide Dogs need support In April, the Association for the Blind of WA – Guide Dogs WA, is putting out a call for volunteers in regional areas, to collect donations for the already well-established ‘Mini Dog’ fundraising program. The Association needs more volunteers in Karratha and Tom Price, to go to regional local businesses, to exchange Mini Dog Collection boxes. A ‘Mini Dog’ is a collection box used to gather donations throughout the Western Australian community. There are approximately 1,500 businesses around Western Australia, both in regional and metropolitan areas, which host a Mini Dog collection box. Jacinta Sirr, the coordinator for the Mini Dog Program and is actively seeking enthusiastic and reliable volunteers to join her team. “Guide Dogs WA treasures every contribution from volunteers, their help is important to us and we are hoping more people will put in a little help to make a difference to WA vision loss community,” said Jacinta. A Mini Dog is approximately 30cm in height with a small base. It’s beige plastic with a coin slot in the top and is in the shape of a Guide Dog. The ongoing support of the Mini Dog Program by the WA community enables the Association to offer specialist skills, training and advice to help people with vision loss regain confidence and live independent, happy lives. Do you have what it takes? Are you a friendly and dedicated person Do you have the time to provide ongoing support to the program Do you enjoy being on the open road and out in the local community Do you have excellent customer service instincts Can you work cooperatively in a busy, dynamic and flexible team? For more details contact Jacinta Sirr, Mini Dog Coordinator on (08) 9311 8238 or email Jacinta.sirr@guidedogswa.com. au.

Rio Tinto contributed financial support towards the purchase of a new ambulance that was also on display during the open day. The community was invited to explore the Sub Centre throughout the day and more than 60 guests enjoyed the dinner that evening. St John’s Ambulance Service Sub Centre president Steve Eames said it was a wonderful event and everyone who attended the open day and dinner thoroughly enjoyed it. “It was great to mark the occasion with a celebration like this,” Mr Eames said. “The support of the community is fantastic and it was good to show them what St John’s is all about.” Rio Tinto general manager Greater Tom Price Operations, Sinead Kaufman, said it was important to support such an essential community service. “St John’s Ambulance Service is integral to the safety and health of the community and it’s great to see everyone coming together to show their appreciation for all that they do,” Ms Kaufman said. “Rio Tinto is committed to supporting our local communities and so we feel our donation is important for the ongoing development of St John’s in Tom Price.”

Company wins fourth contract Site preparation works worth AU$450 million, has secured Thiess Pty Ltd a contract for the downstream portion of the Chevron-operated Wheatstone Project. The Wheatstone LNG Project is a liquefied natural gas (LNG) and domestic gas project off Onslow. Thiess will undertake the bulk and final-finish earthworks for the plant, storm water drainage system and access roads around the project. Thiess Managing Director Bruce Munro welcomed the contract as a further endorsement of Thiess’ capabilities in the LNG sector and said it reinforces the company’s productive and ongoing relationship with Chevron.
“Thiess is excited to be at the forefront of providing critical infrastructure needed for this rapidly growing industry,” he said. “Thiess brings to the sector a proven track record in managing the logistical challenges of these large geographically dispersed projects and we look forward to growing our involvement in the bourgeoning LNG industry both in Western Australia and Queensland.” This is the company’s fourth contract on the Wheatstone LNG project. In joint venture with various international partners, Thiess is already contracted to Bechtel to construct the materials offloading
facility and LNG and condensate tanks. Thiess is also contracted to Chevron to deliver the Wheatstone microtunnel. Work will begin onsite in early fourth quarter 2012, with site preparation works scheduled for completion in early 2014. The contract is forecast to include 95% Australian content and is expected to create 400 Western Australian jobs. Roebourne Golf a big hit By Jo Cooper - from Karratha
By Jo Angel - from Roebourne
Golfers from Karratha adding to the field, saw 40 players team up to battle it out in Roebourne Foursomes and what a big hit the weekend was. Congrat’s to everyone who played in Roebourne at the weekend; you are all winners. A very challenging course took its toll on the legs and heartbeat! Not to mention the balls that went “missing” on the fairways!! Karratha teams of “Bodie and Jarrod” took out the Men’s title (their 3rd in a row) and Gina Hipworth and Susie Byrne took the Ladies title. A big thankyou to Jo Angel, (Club Captain) and his team of merry helpers for organising and also for the great hospitality on the weekend in providing tasty food, drink and marvellous music to entertain the crowd. Thanks to Ross’ Auctions for providing the sponsorship. Fabulous news for the Roebourne Club receiving a grant to upgrade their clubrooms!! Exhausted bodies left the venue pencilling in their return visit! A fabulous weekend and experience... book yourself in to come next time. Roebourne Open only a few weeks away. Karratha golfers look forward to our long association – thanks again Roebourne Golf Club. Don’t forget, the Police Golf Day is Sunday, May 6, not long to go, so organise your team for 3-Ball Ambrose. For more information, contact Ladies Captain Gina Hipworth on 0407 981 479 or the Clubhouse on 9185 1045.
The 2012 Ross’ Auctions PDGA Pilbara Foursomes was held on April 21 and 22 at the Roebourne Golf Club. Forty golfers from Port Hedland, Karratha and Roebourne Golf Clubs took up the challenge of playing the Roebourne Golf Club and survived… just! The drinks were cold and food plentiful, even if some of the scores coming in read more like a cricket scoreboard, certainly a few teams had to “raise the bat” on scoring a century plus! Also there were numerous sightings of the dreaded “moose” (scores of 10+ on any one hole) over the weekend, which provided much amusement for those watching. S Suleski and Z Kmetovic managed to score the highest total on any one hole, a 19 on hole 12 on Saturday (it is a relatively easy par 5, but it did bring undone many teams over the weekend). Overall winners below , plus of course the numerous nearest the pins, long drives and best day one and day 2 scores, so not too many went home empty handed from the weekend. All were well fed and well hydrated even if the scores were interesting A Men’s Gross winners B Broun and Hodgins. A Men’s Net winners B Tawhiti and R Hinchcliffe. Women’s Gross winners G Hipworth and S Byrne. B Men’s Net winners S Harcourt and R Harbrow. B Men’s Net runners up G Abraham and G Hulin.
• Pool work is a big part of AFL life
• Phil ‘Magic’ Knarkle speaks to the troops
AFL WA North Broome camp success By V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt The first week of the school holidays saw the second coming-together of the WA North West squad, as part of the journey to Blacktown Sydney, to be part of the inaugural team to represent WA North in the AFL 16’s National Championships during July this year. The program brought players from the Gascoyne, Kimberley and Pilbara together in January and this time a bigger squad stepped out in Broome. The WA North initiative is developed and implemented by the WAFC, Garnduwa and the V Swans development teams and is headed by West Coast Eagles and Swan Districts legend Phil “Magic” Knarkle. “Magic” who was so dubbed for his poise and skill as a wingman, lead the boys through an inspirational weekend of footy during which he introduced a style of footy and his game plan in a series of sessions, sure to bring the team close together and get them ready to put their head over the ball for their state. The best 15-17 year olds in the North West were put through an AFL Draft Combine by the Edith Cowan Sports Science team with tests including the 20m sprint, ‘clean hands’ and ‘AFL kicking skill’ testing, agility and vertical leap testing, as well as medical screening and diagnostics.
K
• Early morning recovery session at Cable Beach
All players were able to compare their times and scores to those of current AFL players, measure their own performance and find out where they are comparatively. There were some outstanding achievements from the Pilbara boys with Kelman Tullock and Nelson Ansey achieving 62cm and 60cm, respectively in the vertical leap test to sit third and fifth in the group overall. Wickham’s Ansey showed the cleanest hands with a score of 27 in the ‘AFL Clean Hands Test’, and Hedland’s 200cm ruckman Tyler Lindberg impressed, sitting a close second. Falcon Anthony Dunn finished with 3.03 sec on the 20m sprint behind the Pilbara’s fastest, Ansey at 2.95 sec. Youngster Cam Garrett was the most agile of the group while Lindberg, Tom Hughes, Izzy Razalli and Brennan Stewart took four of the top five positions with mid level 12’s and high 13’s in the ‘Beep Test’. The program turns next to the June camp in Perth, where the boys will face further testing and education as well as matches against WAFL Clubs underage teams from Swan Districts, South Fremantle and Claremont. All eyes will be on the North West when the final squad of 25 heads to Sydney to compete in the AFL 16’s National Championships in July in an effort to secure the program and to shine the light on the talent that sits in the North West of our state.

Softball set to start By Claire Moran As the weather starts to cool down in Karratha the excitement will be heating up on the diamond with the commencement of The West Pilbara Softball Organisation Women’s season for 2012, which is set to kick off this Saturday, May 5 down at Bulgarra Oval with the first teams taking to the diamond at 2:00pm. This season will see the return of the 2011 Champions, Inland Storm and 2011 Runners up, Geckos. • Derek Murtagh and Toby Bermuellar from the Karratha Raiders Boxing Club
Pilbara boxers take Perth fights Two Pilbara boxers have just arrived back in town after taking out both of their fights at a recent boxing tournament held in Perth. Derek Murtagh and Toby Bermuellar from the Karratha Raiders Boxing Club competed at the Perth open Night for WA Boxing at the Embassy Ballroom.
so now he will go onto three rounds of three-minute fights, instead of three rounds of two-minute fights. “It was all about gaining experience because there are not many tournaments this side of the country,” he said.
Murtagh won his fight in the middle weight division, 15 points to five, while Bermuellar took out his competitor, nine points to five.
Murtagh, who is an Instrument Technician by day, said that he will be going to Perth for competitions more regularly now and has attended three in the past five weeks.
“We got there late, so when we got there, I was told that I was on in two fights time,” Bermuellar said.
“I will be doing one every three weeks on average from now on,” he said.
“So I just threw on my fighting gear and didn’t do any real warm up.
“I am looking at going to the Australian Championships next year on the East Coast in February.”
“The first round was poor, and I started getting better as the fight went on.
He said that competing requires a lot of dedication and a strict routine and that is why he does it.
“It was equal going into the third round, but by the end, I took him out.
“And you meet good people,” he said.
“I suppose the pressure kind of faded as the fight went on and I seemed to get stronger, I guess more endurance.” This was Bermuellar’s 10th fight,
“I turn to boxing most nights of the week - it helps me let off steam and burn off the day’s frustration. “Boxing teaches you discipline, you learn to control your emotions and reflexes.”
• Salt took the title
Registrations being taken for senior soccer The Karratha and Districts Senior Soccer Association is holding a registration day on Sunday, April 29 at the Tambrey Oval at 3pm. There will be scratch matches, drinks and a sausage sizzle on the day. Registration costs $200 for the Sunday afternoon seniors winter league and girls are more than welcome. If you can’t make it down to the oval on Sunday, registrations will also be taken on Wednesday night at Pegs Creek Oval at 7.15pm.
The association wrapped up their summer Wednesday league recently. The final was between Bulgarra Glory and Salt. It was a hard fought and very exciting game, which ended with Salt sealing it in the final minutes making it 3-1, putting it out of Bulgarra’s reach. The goal scorers (in order) were Michael Rogas (Salt), Declan Barry (Bulgarra), Brendan Hickey (Salt) and Jal Tuany (Salt).
It will also be host to Orbits, Wickham, Sinners, and the Dampier Falcons. Each team will see the reappearance of some of their veteran players with an added influx of new team members, which is great to see. The women’s softball season generally runs for approximately four months, with games being played at Bulgarra Oval, Dampier’s Windy Ridge Oval and Wickham Oval on a successive basis. Games are played at 2:00pm and 4:00pm every Saturday with bye’s throughout the season to incorporate School Holidays, Roebourne Cup and the Fenacling Festival.
• Join in on the fun of softball in May Every week there is a canteen set up with great food and drinks, to help make it an enjoyable afternoon out and to keep the children happy! The WPSO are still currently searching for people to get involved in coaching, playing, scoring or anything else that might help with the running of the association. Every year throughout the season the WPSO conducts coaching clinics, skills clinics and scoring clinics to help improve the level of knowledge for all involved; so we strongly encourage anyone interested to come down and get on board, no matter what level of skill or wisdom you may have on the sport. It is an extremely social game and a great way to meet new people from around Karratha, Dampier and Wickham. If you require any further assistance of how to get involved or just want to have a chat about the association please feel free to get in touch with the WPSO’s president Barrie Sargeant on 9144 2443 or roxsarge@ westnet.com.au, you can also contact Kyla Thomas (Karratha) on 0407 716 797 or KSASecretary@yahoo.com, Olivia Deacon (Wickham) on 9182 1917 or oliviadeacon@ msn.com, Sharon Sewell (Dampier) on 9183 1187or sharon.sewell@bigpond.com

Dampier woman a winner About 120 people from the Pilbara competed in the recent Pirtek Fishing Challenge, held all over the Australian coast on April 15. The Pirtek Fishing Challenge is a one-day fishing competition held right across Australia. Each State and Territory has its own target species and individual prizes, with a total national prize pool of $130,000. It’s a catch, photograph and release competition, so it is eco friendly.
Anglers are advised of their target species the night before the competition, then on competition day they must take a photograph of their best fish on a measuring mat and then upload this photograph to the fishing challenge website. The fish are judged on length, or in the case of the mystery length, the fisherman with a fish closest in length to the mystery length wins. Pirtek Fishing Challenge co-

ordinator Lisa Guest said this year they had 6500 competitors nationally. “The registration fee was $20, with competitors receiving a cap and brag mat for their entry fee,” she said. “All funds received go directly to Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, so this year we raised an amazing $130,000.” Unna Wescombe from Dampier won the Golden Trevally section for WA with her 97.5cm catch. “I went out on the boat Tourettes with my mate
Kevin (he came 3rd with his 96cm golden) and partner Thomas on Sunday, April 15,” she said. “It was an early start to the day and on my first hit I managed to pull up the big girl. “Lines were in at 6am and I caught her at about 7am. “We then tried to get the boys one each but all they were catching were coral trout, so I decided to chuck a line in again, and what you know, I pull up another huge Golden Trevally 92cm. “That’s it, I was no longer allowed to fish.”
Results for the Golden Trevally section First – Unna Wescombe from Dampier with 97.5cm. Second – Cory Miller from Wickham with 96.8cm. Third – Kevin Deacon from Dampier with 96cm. Junior first – William Roche from Exmouth with 87.1cm. Junior second – Jack Clarke from Dampier with 84.6cm. Mystery length – Dean Skennar from Port Hedland with 58.6cm.
A registration day will be held on Thursday 10th May from 4-5pm at the netball courts. This is for: Net Set Go! – anyone aged 5-8 that wants to learn the skills to play netball needs to register with forms and pay the fees of $55 per person on this night (cash or cheque only please). Fees include insurance and a backpack full of netball goodies! 11&U and 13&U players needed – if you do not have a team to play in this season, please come down and register and we will ensure you are put into a team. We will be trying to keep children together with their school and aligning clubs to schools this year to encourage more children to play netball. By Dunane Evans The Wickham Wasps are back in training for the upcoming 2012 Pilbara Rugby League season. Training commenced in early February with a number of new recruits joining some of the club’s familiar faces, as a result of the Cape Lambert upgrade works. The first test for the Wasps will be the Annual Robe River Shield match, a pre-season game against sister town Pannawonica. Last year Pannawonica pulled off an upset at home to take the shield for the first time. This year will be the fourth time the game has been played and the Wasps are keen to regain the shield and start the year on a positive note, after a disappointing 2011 season. The recently completed sporting precinct upgrade in town, has greatly improved the sporting grounds and facilities in Wickham and is sure to make for a good night. Wickham will also again be hosting the PRLA Rugby League Sevens tournament on May 19. They are now calling for team nominations for the tournament, which was a great success last year. The one day event showcases exciting Rugby League, with food, licensed bar and live local entertainment into the evening. Recently the Wasps held their first fundraising event for the year. The Quiz night, held at the community hall, attracted over 100 people and from all reports was a huge success.
A good time was had by all, due to the generosity of local Pilbara businesses, who donated over $2000 worth of prizes. The eventual winners of the night, were the Big Bang Theory team, closely followed by the reigning Quiz night champ’s, The Tony Munns Project, going down by just 1.5 points. A huge thank you to all who helped out and supported the evening. For anyone interested in playing Rugby League with the WWRLC, training is held Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6:30pm. Thursday night training is followed by a dinner, with families always welcome. FIFO workers interested in playing or training are more than welcome at the club. The Wickham wasps would like to thank the following sponsors for their much-appreciated generous support and look forward to what will hopefully be a successful season on and off the field. Sponsors: House Proud, Keyspot, Poinciana Nursery, RetraVision, Comfort Style, Harvey Norman, Edge, Collins Bookstore, K&B Auto Electrics, Ashdowns, Westrac, Infinity Protective Solutions, Geoffrey Ellis Photography, Kooga, Karratha Fluid Power, Nobles & Sons, Nor West Sand & Gravel, Pilbara Perk Coffee Shop. For information on the club or to register a team for the Seven’s competition, contact club President Duane Evans on 0437 885 737 or Secretary Chellet Rainsford 0438 950 017.

Young guns fire up in Club Championship Karratha Kart Club’s second club championship race meeting was held last Saturday night, where local drivers took to the track in what turned out to be a good night’s racing by all competitors. The first on track were the youngsters in the Pro-Cadet class, where Ross Rann outclassed the remainder of the field to win every heat and full points were awarded at the end of the night. New drivers Daniel Richardson and Jared Coutts were in form throughout the night, mixing it up with the remainder of the class to take second and third place behind Ross. The Junior National Combined class came out firing and showed spectators that they meant business. Local driver, Nicholas Rowe, who is known as one of the top junior kart drivers in Australia, throughout the country’s karting fraternity, showed exactly why, when he blitzed the field to end the night ahead of his rivals. Caleb Barth started the night on a high to take a win in the
first heat, but could not follow up in the remainder of the heats and ended the night in second behind Rowe. Lewis Shepherd pushed the two front runners, but was unable to make ground and ended the night to take third place overall. The time came for the senior drivers to get in on the action, when Robert Nicholls showed that he is a force to be reckoned with, after he placed first overall ahead of friend and rival Josh Giles in the Sportsman 125 Combined class. In the Sportsman Restricted Heavy class, Marty Coutts demonstrated how he won his class in the Northern Zones Series over Easter, when he again outpaced his rivals to win the night. Wayne Mouritz tried in vain to keep pace, but was unable to match form and ended the night in second place followed closely by Blair Eaton to round out the top three. Homer O’Keefe was another
driver to win over the Easter series and he too showed that there is no such thing as a fluke when he outclassed his rivals to finish the night on top. Fellow team member Andrew McLeod finished behind O’Keefe, to give local team OMG Racing a one-two finish at the end of the night. The last class of the night was the Junior Clubman class, where Nicholas Rowe and Caleb Barth looked set to go head to head before an accident on the front straight took both of them out, leaving Rowe sidelined for the rest of the meet. It was then that Kayla O’Keefe and Amie Gray were able to show the boys that girls are just as good, if not better, when it comes to racing. O’Keefe was able to hold out Caleb Barth in the remainder of the heats, to take the win with Amie Gray finishing third overall. Karting has become a popular sport in recent times and people of all ages can enjoy the sport, with children as young as seven
