The Nickol Bay Hockey Association hosted the world’s number one hockey team’s visit to Karratha recently to help raise the profile of hockey in the Pilbara. As part of the National Indigenous Program, the Kookaburras visit the Pilbara four times a year, so on April 4, the guys pulled up their hockey socks and visited the Roebourne Primary School. what’sh t • Peter Ciementis pointing to ideas for Mulataga at the forum
Unique forum creates Pilbara community buzz Dental Care By Courtney Bertling
An intense three-day forum was held during the week to plan and design the $1.5 billion Karratha City of the North Core Stage 1 and the Malataga master plan. In November last year, Mirvac was named the preferred proponent for the two developments and part of their negotiations with Landcorp was to hold a forum where the community could have their say. Almost 12 months of working has gone into making sure the forum would run smoothly, as well as organising 20 of the key stakeholders to be present in Karratha at the time. Landcorp regional manager Jacinta Harvey said the idea of flying everyone into Karratha for the three days of the forum, really shows how unique it is. “Everyone has been working solidly for three days,” she said. “It is a fast track as there is such a huge need to get it out. I haven’t seen this done for any other development before.” The aim of the forum was to produce by day three, a design concept that can be presented to participants that will have overcome issues and taken in ideas from the local community. It was also to ensure the masterplan for both projects reflect the needs and aspirations of the local community and celebrate the heritage and history of the Pilbara region. On day one, Wednesday, April 11, the Planning Design Forum commenced with a series of presentations from Mirvac and Landcorp sharing their vision and ideas of the plans. The afternoon of day one was set-aside for interactive group sessions where all participants were encouraged to have input into the discussions. Day two, Thursday, April 12, held a series of technical sessions structured around key themes including landscape, ecology, cultural, coastal engineering, transport, community facility etc. Mirvac resource partnerships national general manager Evan Campbell said that they are
currently seeking feedback from local business on their commercial and retail needs, which will further help in the development of both master plan designs. Local businesses should log on to www.mirvacdevelopment.com/ karratha to register their interest. Mirvac sales and marketing director Anne Waugh said about 100 people turned up to the day one presentations.
“There is a big buzz going around at the moment, everyone is really passionate about this and it (the forum) has been really considered,” she said. “It is a much more dynamic process and the passion that came out from the local community members, the Shire of Roebourne and all of the participants. It creates this fantastic buzz.”

Mr Campbell said over the coming six months, Mirvac would continue to develop the masterplan for both projects, with the aim of submitting plans for the approval by relevant Government Authorities and the Shire of Roebourne by late 2012.
The State Government is also contributing $130 million from Royalties for Regions to the development of new roads, infrastructure upgrades, public amenities and additional service worker accommodation in the Karratha City Centre.

“We will continue to engage and consult with the local community over the coming months as the master plan for Karratha City Core and Mulataga develops,” he said. The Karratha City Core Stage 1 development will include a hotel, retail shops, commercial office space, community meeting place and service worker accommodation, while the Mulataga community will deliver up to 2,000 residential homes in a range of residential villages, and activate the coastal node connecting Karratha and Nickol Bay.

The pregnant celebrity is seen often as a stately goddess: hormonally blessed with the gift of enhanced interior design skills and an infinite capacity for yoga. For the mortal, however, pregnancy can mean having the elegance of a potato, and the thought of some distinctly unpregnant woman offering ANOTHER remedy involving ginger can make one rather dangerous indeed. This one’s for Dannielle and you champions of morning sickness. Enjoy your ginger cordial.

The Rise and Hurl of the Ginger Phoenix So NEVER will I say to her, ‘The time will soon arrive when you will rise in phoenix fire, a goddess born to thrive!’
Week 39, the easy bit, I’m not stuck feeling torrid. My chemistry made me forget the morning sickness horror. If I once more heard kind advice, like, ‘Why not ginger beer? Or ginger ale? Or ginger nuts?’ I’ll give you nuts, my dear!
Ah, to have the gift of life within (and jumping on your bladder) to have the thrill of birth to come (can it just climb down a ladder?) to have the gift of the future (which stage dives on your ribs) to have the joy of family (and a thousand pukey bibs).
If I once more heard phrases, down pat maternity speak, like, ‘It means your baby’s healthy’ or, ‘You’ll be fine by 14 weeks’ or, ‘Have a bloody ginger nut’ or, ‘I swore by ginger cake’… I’d buy up ginger products ALL and burn them at the stake! And my friend’s had it with ginger beer, the bubbles wreak disaster! She wishes she could curl right up, spend forty weeks in plaster.
just brace yourself for kind advice, how, ‘Morning sickness passes.’ How, ’If in doubt, try ginger nuts or ginger beer in glasses or ginger ale or ginger cubes or snort it up your nose! (I did not try that one myself so…not sure how that goes).
And to all the would be dads out there, you pander to her, clear? Especially if she’s morning sick, but watch the ginger, hear!

By Senior Constable Newby General Information: The school holidays are upon us and Karratha Police want to remind the public about the offence of trespassing. If you are on somebody’s property without their permission without a lawful reason then you are trespassing. For example if a ball flies over the next door neighbours fence make sure you ask them for permission to retrieve your ball before entering their back yard. Another example is our local schools, they are open to students, parents and teachers during school hours but as soon as the school is
closed it becomes private property. Karratha Police will be patrolling around all our schools to make sure no one is trespassing on the school property. Police will stop and talk to any person they find walking through our schools, the reason for this is that we often find that when people trespass on school properties they commit offences like damage, burglary and graffiti so please keep away from the schools these holidays unless you have permission to be there. Community Information: The Karratha to Broome bike ride is coming up and we need volunteers and riders from the public to
come along. The Karratha to Broome Bike Ride will commence on Thursday, August 16 and arrive in Broome in the afternoon of Friday, August 17. The bike ride is organised to help support Police Legacy, which is an organisation that helps families of deceased police officers. There are currently 291 widows, 1 widower and 36 children under 20 years of age being supported by WA Police Legacy. If you would like to be involved in the ride or to be part of the support crew please contact Senior Constable Jackie Newby at Karratha Police Station on 91437200.

• Brittanty Moxham is being recognised for her work at The Youth Shed
Locals shortlisted for WA Youth Awards By Courtney Bertling
Local Brittany Moxham will go up against three other people for one of the eight awards given out at the WA Youth Awards this Thursday, April 19. Ms Moxham has been nominated and shortlisted as a finalist under the category Educate! for her role she plays at The Youth Shed. The WA Youth Awards were established in 1999 to recognise outstanding young West Australians aged 12 to 25 years. They showcase the hard work, dedication and talent of young people, youth workers, youth-led groups and journalists reporting on youth issues throughout WA. “It’s always an honour to be recognized for the work I do,” Ms Moxham said. “It’s just nice to be nominated. That’s a genuine feeling, being recognized for the work that you have done.” Last year Ms Moxham was listed as a finalist in the WA Youth Awards under the category Create! “I have been working with young people for quite a while and in this region, young people have so many great opportunities to have fun and get out there,” she said. When asked if Ms Moxham was worried about the competition for the award, she simply replied:
“Let the best man win!”
Another local that has been shortlisted as a finalist is Liam Pilgrim, under the category Recreate! Mr Pilgrim is well known in the Pilbara for his sporting accomplishments including coaching, linesman, umpiring and playing a variety of different sports.

Several bushfires started from lightning have burnt 300ha over four days in the Millstream Chichester National Park recently. The Department of Environment and Conservation monitored the fire, which was in inaccessible terrain, since it was detected on Thursday, April 5. On Sunday, April 8, the bushfire was under control and an all clear was issued for people in the vicinity of George River, Python Pool and surrounding areas. A DEC spokesperson said that even though the danger had passed, people still needed to remain vigilant in case the situation changed. “Drive slowly and with caution due to smoke and emergency services personnel working in the area. Motorists should avoid the area,” DEC advised. “For those in the area, drive with caution and follow the directions of national park staff.”
Guess who’s coming to town...
Youth Minister Robyn McSweeney congratulated the finalists in this year’s WA Youth Awards for their outstanding contributions to the State’s cultural, social and economic life. “To see such commitment, skill and compassion reflected throughout the 119 nominations received this year was very encouraging,” Mrs McSweeney said. “These young people represent the future of Western Australia and it is wonderful to see their achievements highlighted through these awards.” Each category winner receives $2,000 and one winner will be named the overall WA Young Person of the Year, receiving return flights for two to a European destination, courtesy of Singapore Airlines and the Department for Communities. The winners will be announced at the WA Youth Awards gala ceremony on Thursday, April 19, 2012.

Pilbara Girl nominations By Courtney Bertling The call is out to find the 2012 Pilbara Girl. This will be the third year the competition has been held in the Pilbara, following the ongoing success of the “Kimberley Girl” program. Nominations are now open for all Indigenous women between the ages of 16 and 25 from Port Hedland, Roebourne, Karratha plus surrounding towns and communities to participate. If successful in the Pilbara Girl heats, women will take part in five days of intensive professional and personal development, deportment, grooming and modeling workshops before participating in a regional heat. Pilbara Girl gives communities the opportunity to deliver a sustainable program
for young Indigenous women for many years to come. Facilitator Marlikka Perdrisat said it has been amazing to help the girls and see how much they improve in just a couple of days from the workshop. “A lot of them have never done anything like this before. “On the first day some of them wouldn’t even talk and now, just look at them,” she said. Since 2004 Goolarri Media’s Kimberley Girl program has been cultivating leaders, encouraging community participation and building confidence and self-esteem in participants from around the region. In 2010, Goolarri produced the inaugural Pilbara Girl program in the community of Roebourne with Pilbara heat winners travelling to Broome

• Shire of Roebourne Senior Environmental Health Officer Leon Myburgh on patrol in Baynton West
Speak up about noise 7pm from Monday to Saturday and are not allowed to work on Sundays and Public Holidays,” Mr Kot said. “Although the majority of builders and their contractors do the right thing, when a builder does not play by the rules, it is vital that those inconvenienced by construction noise contact the Shire as soon as possible with as much information as possible. “Ideally, we need to know the street address, times and dates, an accurate description of the noise, and the builder or contractor involved.”
Mr Kot said Shire officers could then promptly investigate the complaint further and, if required, issue a warning or infringement. “Shire officers regularly engage with builders and their contractors to ensure they are both aware of and compliant with the rules,” he said. “In the first instance, we will typically take up a complaint with a contractor on site and if another complaint is received we will contact the builder responsible for the project. “Once in contact with the
builder we will ask that they address all their workers and contractors, who work at the site at the same time, to remind them of their obligations to comply with the rules.” Shire of Roebourne Senior Environmental Health Officer Leon Myburgh said the majority of builders and their contractors were doing the right thing. “One of the larger construction companies currently working in the heart of Baynton West is Gavin Construction, which has started work on the new Baynton West Primary School,” Mr Myburgh said. “Gavin Construction recently reassessed its activities at this site and is complying with construction noise requirements. “This is a great example of how builders and their contractors working on even the largest of construction projects can minimise disruption to the community.” The Shire of Roebourne accepts that concrete pours will often need to be completed earlier than 7am. All other construction activities, which generate noise, are not permitted to start until after 7am. For more information, contact the Shire of Roebourne on (08) 9186 8555.

PLUTO LNG PROJECT
Update: flaring during plant start-up As Woodside continues the start-up phase of the Pluto LNG Plant, a number of activities are taking place that are resulting in an audible and visible flame from the flare tower on site. Flaring during the start-up phase of the project is essential to safely start up the plant and is normal industry practice. All flaring will be conducted under government-approved conditions. How long will there be flaring? The duration of flaring will largely depend on the progress of the commissioning and start-up activities. To complete these activities, it is estimated that flaring will be required for the next few months.
Will there be any dark smoke? Smoke may be produced during flaring. Woodside has aimed to significantly reduce the potential for smoke to be generated from the Pluto LNG Plant by adding equipment to the flare systems to minimise dark smoke production. Will there be any noise during the start-up period? During start-up of the Pluto LNG Plant, noise levels from flaring will at times be greater than those that are expected during normal operations. A noise monitoring program is being conducted using hand-held meters at the site boundary and nearby receptors.
Will the flame from the flare be visible? The flame from the main flare tower will be visible from Karratha, Dampier and a range of locations in the Shire of Roebourne.
Where can I get more information? Karratha and Dampier residents will soon be receiving an information flyer in their letterboxes.
For further information: please contact Woodside on 1800 634 988 or Pluto.info@woodside.com.au

Locals forced to put up with construction noise outside of prescribed hours are being encouraged to contact the Shire of Roebourne straight away so that Environmental Health officers can act on their behalf. Shire of Roebourne Acting Chief Executive Officer Simon Kot said complaints about construction noise had been on the rise, particularly in Baynton West, but the Shire needed evidence to act on behalf of complainants. “Builders are not allowed to begin works that generate noise before 7am or after

Organisation for NAIDOC Week has started NAIDOC Week celebrations will be bigger and better than ever before in 2012 thanks to a new partnership between the Shire of Roebourne and the Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi Foundation (NYFL). The Shire and NYFL have signed a memorandum of understanding, which will see them work together to celebrate the culture, history and achievements of Indigenous Australians during NAIDOC Week 2012, which is proudly supported by Principal Sponsor North West Shelf Project and Platinum Sponsors Rio Tinto and API West Pilbara Iron Ore Project. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said the focus of NAIDOC Week activities, from July 1 to 8, would be to provide a platform for local Indigenous performers to showcase their rich and eclectic talent in music, dance, the arts and sports. “A number of nationallyrecognised and celebrated Indigenous performers and role models will also take part in NAIDOC Week 2012 at various events to be held throughout the Shire,” Councillor White-Hartig said. “The primary objective of NAIDOC Week is for all locals to celebrate and feel proud of the inspiring Indigenous talent, which is so prolific in our region. “This sense of pride will, in turn, encourage the development of positive attitudes towards Indigenous Australians in non-
Indigenous Australians.” NYFL CEO Evan Maloney said the NAIDOC Week 2012 program would consist of a series of community events and activities throughout the Shire of Roebourne. “The week-long festivities will include an official opening ceremony and community-driven festival with artistic and musical performances and Indigenous films to be held in the towns across the Shire,” Mr Maloney said. “In addition to the events organised by the NAIDOC Working Group, facilitated by the Shire and NYFL, and coordinated by YothD10, all other events organised throughout the Shire, such as those hosted by local schools, will be supported through a collective marketing campaign. “This will ensure that all NAIDOC events are well attended and supported by the entire community. “NAIDOC celebrations are an integral element in reaching the Shire’s objectives set out in the Arts and Cultural Plan to strengthen our creative and cultural identity and host high-quality events and festivals. “It is imperative that the Shire of Roebourne makes a concerted effort to ensure NAIDOC Week is celebrated by not only our Indigenous residents but by the whole community, which in effect will help to create a vibrant harmonious community which values diversity.”

Police hold community BBQ
The Karratha Police and North West Shelf Venture held another one of their community barbecues recently.
Members of the community were able to head down to the Baynton West oval on the corner of Gardugarli Drive and Mariniyarra Loop. People were treated to a free sausage sizzle while catching up with local police
officers and other members of the public.
The Karratha Police also had posters of graffiti tags on display and also rewards for anyone who could identify the vandals behind the graffiti. The children were also treated to show bags, which were handed out, containing lots of interesting information on how to protect your valuables plus a few goodies.

WHAT’S COMING UP AT THE WALKINGTON AMPHITHEATRE
Pilbara Dialogue – Managing the workforce crisis The Pilbara Development Commission held the first Pilbara Dialogue for 2012 in Perth earlier last week. Themed ‘Managing the Workforce Crisis’ this dialogue drew together viewpoints from government, consultants and industry to discuss the national workforce issues such as the skills shortage, employment and education, the implications of FIFO workforces, an aging population, labour demand and migration. These issues were discussed in relation to the Pilbara and how the region will manage it. The event included informative speakers presenting on workforce trends, FIFO workforces and its tax implications and the Pilbara Regional Workforce Development Plan currently being undertaken. Mr Peter Dyball from Pit Crew Consulting spoke on workforce trends. He covered major projects approved for WA and how they will impact on the workforce demand. The different perspectives the Dialogue offered impressed him and he is keen to see what the future holds for the Pilbara. He said an understanding of the key issues was important for ‘making sure we are in the best position to capitalise on the next five or ten years to meet the demand for commodities to be able
to be the powerhouse that delivers a lot of Australia’s prosperity.’ Mr Dyball was followed by Dr Ruth Shean, Department of Training and Workforce Development who presented on the Pilbara Workforce Development Plan currently under development. Dr Shean was impressed by the opportunities the dialogue presented in giving key leaders a place to discuss the workforce crisis. “Western Australia and its population have a great future, and getting all to be part of the planning will ensure that we get the best outcome for our state,” she said. “The Pilbara regional planning process is ongoing. “As solutions are found to local issues, more problems will emerge. “The Pilbara dialogue is a great way to approach this.” Information about the tax issues was presented by Tanya Ross Jones from Ernst & Young. “It’s a fantastic forum it had a terrific and vibrant discourse about a lot of really relevant issues that I see a lot of businesses dealing with,” Ms Ross Jones said. “[The discussion] was terrific and what was really interesting about this forum was the quality of input from the audience.”
The dialogue was facilitated by Michael Pascoe who believes the event to be an opportune time to acknowledge the challenges the region faces and also identify opportunities. As the economic powerhouse of the nation, the Pilbara faces unique challenges in managing the workforce crisis. High labour demand and a housing shortage are among them, and managing this involves training and development within regional communities. The session was wrapped up with a panel discussion. The panel had representatives from Chamber Minerals & Energy, Global People Solutions, Department of Immigration & Citizenship and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations plus the Chair of the PDC Board Ms Nicole Lockwood. Ms Lockwood considered the first Pilbara Dialogue held in Perth to have been very productive. “The discussion generated was positive and covered a variety of subjects and perspectives,” she said. “There was robust discussion surrounding the differences between increasing skilled migration and training local people and the flow on effects of both.”

Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo By Jenny Fox Being a lover of Cockatoos and parrots of all shapes and sizes I thought this guy worth a mention when I received the email regarding him. He is an endangered Carnaby black cockatoo but with a difference. His unusual feather condition is due to a rare genetic condition (the name of which I can’t pronounce and doesn’t make much sense) and he has been sighted flying with his flock for several years in the Perth area. TThe Carnaby and Baudin’s are related and both on the endangered list due to land clearing and loss of native food, being illegally shot and poaching of their eggs and young for the black market trade. Statistics show that only 2% of babies make it to adulthood so the odds are stacked against them. There has been quite a bit of publicity in recent years to raise awareness of the plight of these beautiful parrots and I myself didn’t realise how bad their situation was until my daughter did a few months volunteering at Karrakin, the black cockatoo recovery centre in Perth. A recent documentary on ABC TV called ‘On a wing and a prayer’ featured a pair of Carnaby’s at a high risk-nesting site where over the last four years they have lost their chicks
to poachers. Rick Dawson, the senior wildlife investigator for the DEC is leading the charge on protecting these birds. DNA testing is now being used now to build family profiles of the nesting pairs and their chicks and this information can be used to identify poached birds vs captive bred. These birds are now only found around the Perth region but their traditional habitat extends from north of Geraldton to the edge of the Great Western Woodlands, southeast to Esperance and the coastal southwest areas inland from Margaret River to Walpole and Albany. They need mature eucalypts (over 100 years old) such as salmon gum and wandoo that have suitable hollows for nesting. The cockatoos require a close association between breeding and feeding sites during the breeding season. If these two very different habitats are not within a reasonable distance of each other, breeding attempts fail or the young birds starve. After breeding, the cockatoos move to higher rainfall areas along the coast in search of food sources such as banksia and hakea heathlands. The bushfires around Perth this year and the Margaret river fires last
year wiped out their feeding grounds and a lot of birds were starving and seeking alternative food sources. Some interesting facts are: Male Carnaby’s feed the female at her nest during the incubation period and fly over 12km to ensure she gets the food she needs during nesting. They live for 40-50 years in the wild and a large proportion of the remaining population now is past breeding age. The bird in the photo is a male and pink eye ring indicates the bird in breeding mode. The photo was taken by Mike Edmondson (renowned wilderness and wildlife photographer) near Bibra Lakes late last year, right near the area the state government are trying to push through the Roe Highway, which means more habitat destruction. For more information about this species go to the www. wingandaprayer.com.au website.
I’ve always hated Easter. Once whilst on an Easter egg hunt I discovered a pawnbroker receipt for a necklace I had given my then girlfriend of seven years, which she had ‘lost’. Upon reflection a gold dolphin clutching a cubic zirconia between its teeth as it jumps through a dream catcher wasn’t the best choice, but I was going through a marine phase. She’d said she loved it. So I was more than a little surprised that upon questioning she decided to end it ‘mutually’. I tried to explain what mutual meant but she was fairly clear that it was over and cited dolphins, amongst other things, as examples of our irreconcilable differences. The sudden ‘mutual’ parting of ways, left me a little jaded, and averse to allowing that level of vulnerability again. “I don’t do attachment. I’ve got my own thing going,” became my catch cry. I was a poster boy for singledom and the last thing I wanted was the unspeakable ‘relationship’ word to come up again. For

Short stay accommodation study commenced understanding of current and future visitors numbers and needs to develop strategies for increasing the quantity and variation of short stay accommodation options in the region.
The Pilbara Development Commission in partnership with the Pilbara Regional Council has commissioned a study into a demand/ needs analysis of short stay accommodation in the Pilbara.
“We hope to incorporate a differentiation of future demand by asking questions like: how many people are not visiting the Pilbara because of accommodation availability?” Mr Campbell said.
The current construction boom places immense pressure on the short stay accommodation market with contractors and FIFO workers often filling all available accommodation.
“Iron Ore will always dominate the economy in the Pilbara.
A study of the current market will provide a solid foundation for building up the tourism industry.
“What we are aiming to do is reduce the reliance of the region on that industry by developing a tourism industry.”

Hannah who hails from Broome and Natasha who is a Karratha resident both agree that they’ve learned a lot during their blocks at the Institute these past two and a half years. “My experience at the Institute has been very positive,” Hannah said. “I’ve gained solid training in the past couple of years. “It’s also been great learning different techniques from the other apprentices.” Natasha explains that working with her peers has given her a lot of insight into the variety of different ways hairstyling can be done. “From watching the other apprentices, I’ve learned to develop my own signature technique,” she said. “On my two-week blocks, I’ve also been able to concentrate on researching the latest styles and the newest tools in hairdressing.” It hasn’t been all fun and games for the soon-to-be professionals. They’ve worked really hard throughout their apprenticeships to get this far. “There were times when I thought two weeks was too short,” Natasha said, recalling the last few times she’s attended training on campus. “There was so much to learn in such a short period of time.

• Natasha Riordan and Hannah Twaddle “But I guess all that training has helped me to become a better hairdresser.” The two graduating apprentices definitely have a passion for their chosen career. Excited about the possibilities ahead, they recount how they came to love hairdressing. “Honestly, I thought I wanted to be a builder when I was younger,” Hannah said. “Towards the end of high school, I tried out a preapprenticeship in hairdressing and I got really into it! “I’m excited to see where my qualification will take me.” Natasha, on the other hand, had always been interested in the beauty industry. She says that growing up with three sisters instilled in her an early keenness in all
things ‘girlie’. Now nearly qualified and armed with scissors and blowdryers, Hannah of Broome’s Shaggah’s Studio and Natasha of Karratha’s Head of Time plan to continue honing their skills professionally for the next few years. After that, the world is their oyster. “I would love to take my skills overseas,” Hannah said. “It would be awesome to work on a cruise ship!” Natasha says that she would consider taking her profession to America. “I plan to live and work in New York in the future,” she said. “I would love to continue to develop my skills and gain more experience.”
Incentives for psychologists to serve schools in need School psychologists will be offered up to $14,420 above the usual salary and location allowance in a bid to attract muchneeded support services for students in the Pilbara. Member for North West, Vincent Catania MLA welcomed news of the threeyear incentive packages that would be offered for vacancies based at 16 selected schools to ensure all students had access to a school psychologist. “While the State Government is committed to filling 60 new school psychologist positions across the state and it is on track to fulfil this promise, it has always been recognised that it is more difficult in some regional areas to attract and retain
pilbaraecho
psychologists to work on a permanent basis,” he said. “It is essential that every student in WA has access to these services and that is why the Government is offering conditions and salary packages that recognise the unique personal and professional challenges faced by school psychologists in these areas. “School psychologists help students deal with behavioural issues including bullying, traumatic events at home or at school, and problems with their motivation or learning. “Working with school personnel, parents and other agencies, they can also identify when a student’s mental wellbeing is at risk and may require further intervention.”
Incentives include an extra salary allowance of up to $14,420 per year and additional leave and travel concessions similar to those received by teachers in regional areas. “As well as further incentives, psychologists in these areas will be able to earn up to $127,705 a year, including a locality allowance of up to $8,458, compared with the usual base salary of $104,827 a year,” Mr Catania said. The successful applicants will be based at Karratha Primary School, Karratha Senior High School and Tom Price Senior High School, but will also work with students in surrounding schools where required.

Fun on freaky Friday As part of the Karratha Entertainment Centre’s April school holiday program, two excursions were held last week, a sports day and a freaky Friday fun day. Children were able to play basketball and dodge ball, show their skills with the hula-hoop and skipping rope, plus learn to make yummy
smoothies during their Super Sports Day last Tuesday. On Wednesday, the kids got to let all their energy out at The Youth Shed where they got to enjoy the brand new indoor play area and also express their creative side by doing crafts. There is still time for
children to join the fun of the school holiday programs. Next week, the KEC will be holding a pool fun day, a sports fun day, a movie day and a disco to finish off the school holidays. For more information contact the KEC on 9186 8556.

Commissioner launches new initiative for businesses Small business operators in Western Australia have a new, predominantly free, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) service to help resolve all types of business disputes relating to unfair market practices, which started on March 26. The ADR service is a new initiative of the Small Business Development Corporation, which followed the recent appointment of the Small Business Commissioner. Commissioner David Eaton says the service will reduce the vulnerability of small businesses in disputes, help them preserve ongoing relationships and get them back to business sooner. “We’ve based our service on the very successful Victorian Commissioner model, tailored to meet the needs of the Western Australian small business sector,” Mr Eaton said. “At the heart of the ADR service is a hands-on, timely, uncomplicated means of resolving business disputes thereby reducing the need to go to court.” Along with investigating disputes, the ADR service will provide information and advice to small business operators about their rights and obligations and where applicable, access to subsidised mediation. The Commissioner says he will
be taking a practical approach to disputes and will work with disputants small and large, to get them working together again. “I will work to build relationships across industries, not only working with small businesses but engaging with large businesses and their representatives to ensure they too understand their rights and responsibilities,” Mr Eaton said. In addition, where small businesses encounter difficulties in their commercial dealings with government agencies, the Commissioner will also be able to receive and investigate these complaints. As such, the Commissioner will be a central point for complaints from small business about retail tenancy and unfair market practice disputes in Western Australia. “If business conduct issues are identified that are not being adequately dealt with through existing measures, I will have the capacity to bring these matters to the government’s attention,” the Commissioner said. The Small Business Commissioner and the Alternative Dispute Resolution service were established through amendments to the Small Business Development Corporation Act 1983, and passed through Parliament with bi-partisan support, in December 2011.

Mosquito-borne disease threat continues across WA The Department of Health is reminding residents and travellers throughout Western Australia to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. The warning follows continued activity of mosquitoborne diseases across WA. Ross River Virus (RRV) and Barmah Forest Virus (BFV) are active in parts of Perth and the South West, while RRV and Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE) virus are active in the north of the state. The above-average activity of RRV in the South West and Perth was predicted in October 2011 and has continued throughout summer and early autumn. Above average rainfall, higher than usual minimum temperatures and recurrent high tides have enabled extensive breeding of mosquitoes and ongoing transmission of RRV. Department of Health Acting
Medical Entomologist Dr Peter Neville, said Ross River Virus continued to be active throughout most parts of WA, with 1153 cases reported to the Department of Health since July 2011. “Areas of greatest concern include Perth (particularly suburbs with substantial natural wetlands and bushland), the South West, Great Southern and Wheatbelt,” Dr Neville said. “We are also starting to see an increase in the number of cases of RRV from the north of WA, associated with wet season rainfall. “Local Governments and the Department of Health have had collaborative mosquito management programs in place since the elevated risk of mosquito-borne diseases was first identified.
“However, the sheer size and inaccessibility of natural mosquito breeding habitat in many areas of WA, including some parts of Perth, means that it is often not possible to reduce mosquito populations to levels that don’t pose some risk to public health.” Symptoms of RRV and BFV include painful or swollen joints, sore muscles, skin rashes, fever, fatigue and headaches. Symptoms can last for weeks or months and the only way to confirm infection is through specific blood tests organised by a doctor. There are no cures or registered vaccines for these viruses so it is important that people take care to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes. People living or travelling in WA do not need to change their travel plans, but should take extra precautions to avoid mosquito bites, such as: Avoiding outdoor exposure, particularly around dawn and dusk
Scholarship recipients announced Thanks to the Early Learning Scholarship Program (ELSP), developed in partnership with the Shire of Roebourne, Rio Tinto and the Pilbara Institute, eight locals will receive financial assistance while studying early learning and childcare. A call for applications late last year resulted in Simone Rowe, Tamarra Lynch, Tarniesha Thompson, Amanda Dawson, Michelle Giovenco, Melanie Carr, Kim Tahi Tahi and Stacey Sampi as the successful recipients earlier this year. Each will receive financial incentives at key milestones throughout their training and will also have their course costs covered. The program covers those who are completing a Certificate III in Children’s Services, Diploma of Children’s Services and Advanced Diploma of Children’s Services, and is aimed at encouraging people interested in a career in early learning to take the next step. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said a shortage of

The most effective and long-lasting formulations are lotions or gels. Natural or organic repellents may not be as effective as DEET or picaridin, or may need to be reapplied more frequently; Ensuring insect screens are installed and in good condition. The use of bed nets will offer further protection; Using mosquito nets or mosquitoproof tents when camping or sleeping outdoors; and Ensuring infants and children are adequately protected against mosquito bites, preferably with suitable clothing, bed nets or other forms of insect screening.

• Early Learning Scholarship Program childcare places locally had led the Shire of Roebourne, Rio Tinto and the Pilbara Institute to join forces to offer these scholarships. “By encouraging more people to work in child care we will ideally see more and more child care places becoming available for families in our Shire,” Councillor White-Hartig said. “Being a part of the ELSP is the first step to becoming involved in a worthwhile and rewarding career. “Quality education, care and play for children in their formative years lay the foundations for their future development. “The program offers financial assistance to people from a range of

backgrounds and living situations to progress in a career in early learning.” Kim Tahi Tahi, the successful recipient of a scholarship to study a Certificate III in Children’s Services, said this opportunity would help her continue to have a positive impact with families in her community of Roebourne and surrounding areas. “It is so important in the early years to encourage a love of learning, having positive experiences and helping parents and children transition to school in order to have a successful education and a bright future,” Ms Tahi Tahi said. “Thank you to the Shire of Roebourne, Rio Tinto and the Pilbara Institute for this wonderful opportunity.”

Ned Cheedy Mayinbungu (1907-2012)
The Telethon Institute for Child Health Research honours the life of a great Australian, Yindjibarndi Elder, Ned Cheedy Mayinbungu (1907-2012) who passed away to join his ancestors on his beloved country forever. The father of eight and grandfather and great-grandfather of many, Mr. Cheedy devoted his many years to his culture, Law, language family and people, sharing his knowledge, songs, culture and stories with all, and with the world. His greatest joy was in singing traditional songs to Roebourne’s children because he knew, as we know, that it is through the strength of culture that families and children flourish. Australia has lost a great man, an Elder of high esteem. Our deep condolences to his family and all Yindjibarndi. Agner 0430 753 702 or Tony 0433 375 956
Every year, the Shire of Roebourne runs an incentive scheme for ratepayers to settle their accounts in full by the due date. Traditionally, the incentive scheme has received strong support from the local business community with businesses donating prizes of cash and vouchers. In recognition of their support, sponsors are acknowledged in a newsletter sent with the annual rates notice which is distributed to thousands of households across the Shire, as well as coverage in the local media by way of advertising. Interested businesses are invited to participate in this unique sponsorship opportunity by contacting Cassandra Meehan on 9186 8627 or cassandra.meehan@ roebourne.wa.gov.au by 2pm 18 April 2012 to discuss further. WRAPS completes first round By Barry Branch Wickham, Roebourne & Point Samson (WRAPS) Motocross Club’s first round was an awesome event, with up to 80 racers braving the 40-degree heat. The new 30 position start gates proved to be a big success, with Concrete Logistics and Norwest Sand and Gravel to thank for their generous support in making this possible. Even riders from as far away as Broome and Port Hedland attended, and were well rewarded by taking a few podium places.
• Getting air during one of the quad races.
A new practice format was trialed in an attempt to speed up the day’s proceedings, but riders should be pleased to learn that in future the old format will be returned to. The stand out field of the day was definitely the Vet’s class, with 16 riders on the gate. Greg Christie (Wickham) and Dave Malcom (Port Hedland) both rode hard and fast for first place in all races, but Christie (alias Crusty) took overall for the day. The 50cc class also had good numbers, showing that the sport is alive and well. Harry Stone (Broome) displayed some impressive riding, along with Mitchell Bond (Karratha) and Jye Tomerini (Port Hedland), with spectators being treated to some of the best riding ever seen in this class.

Registrations still being taken for hockey By Courtney Bertling Last Wednesday night saw a social game of hockey being played at the Bulgarra tennis courts with the Masters vs the Juniors or the Over 35’s vs the Under 35’s. At half time, the Masters were dominating the field with a score of 7-1. “We are looking forward to the youngsters coming back with superior fitness in the second half,” Nickol Bay Hockey Association president Steve Cook said. In the Masters, Paul Monty proved to be an outstanding player, scoring three goals alone in the first half. While for the Juniors, Johnny Marshall set the bar high.
The hockey season for seniors and juniors continues after the school holidays with junior hockey returning on May 1 and senior hockey returning on May 2. Registrations are still being taken for both, so if you are interested, head down on Tuesday’s for the junior or for the seniors, to the have-a-go night on Wednesday, May 2, or they also allow casual players to join in every Wednesday from May 9. “So if you have a Wednesday night free, then come on down,” Cook said. “You can sign yourself up, or even as a team.” For May 9, the men and women will be spilt up, instead of playing mixed games.
“We are hoping to get four women’s and four men’s teams for the next season,” Cook said. The women’s games will start every Wednesday at 6.30pm while the men take the courts at 7.30pm at the Bulgarra tennis courts. The junior hockey season continues after the school holidays on Tuesday, May 1 at the Pegs Creek Oval at 5pm. Junior hockey is open to primary school students and is still taking registrations, so people are encouraged to head down anytime. For more information about junior hockey, contact nbhajuniors@gmail.com or for more information about senior hockey, contact Steve Cook on 9144 4423.

Karratha Police senior constable Jackie Newby said motorbikes are stolen throughout the year with no real pattern to the thefts. “Although, we notice that when we have received complaints in the past there will be a few at the same time,” she said. “This could mean that the same group of offenders are targeting motorbikes at that particular time. “Like burglary, motor vehicle theft is an opportunistic crime and if the

Kookaburras fly into the Pilbara By Courtney Bertling
The Nickol Bay Hockey Association hosted the world’s number one hockey team’s visit to Karratha recently to help raise the profile of hockey in the Pilbara. As part of the National Indigenous Program, the Kookaburras visit the Pilbara four times a year, so on April 4, the guys pulled up their hockey socks and visited the Roebourne Primary School. They taught the students basic techniques and safety rules of the game, before taking a team to the Junior Interschool Carnival held at the Tambrey Oval. Six schools competed in the carnival including Tambrey, Pegs Creek, Millars Well, Roebourne, Wickham and St Paul’s. Nickol Bay Hockey Assocation’s Annabelle Little said that some schools attend with more than one team and overall, more than 100 kids showed up. “The

inundated for signatures, tips, questions and attention,” she said. In the afternoon, the Kookaburras visited the NBHA junior hockey registration and also stayed to check out the senior grand finals. “We had over 50 kids sign up for our junior registration that afternoon and stay on to play games and do drills with the Kookaburras,” Little said. “The Kookaburras then showcased some tricks and skills as their goalie (Nathan Burgers) donned the goalie gear and gave the Kookaburras some shots at goals. “The seniors all arrived early to get some training from the Kookaburras and run some practice drills with them and have a chat.” She said it was a unique opportunity for kids and seniors to meet the Kookaburras in a remote area where there are not opportunities or facilities to meet

opportunity to spend time with them here so they become mentors to the kids.” The NBHA would like to thank their sponsors Karratha International Hotel and the Shire of Roebourne for accommodating and catering for the players and their entourage. “Thanks to Tambrey Primary School for hosting and equipment and The Water Corporation for supplying water bottles,” Little said.
“NBHA has been supported by the Kookaburras, Hockey WA, Hockey Australia, the DSR, Indigenous Services Australia, Fortescue Metals Group and of course Nickol Bay Hockey Association Volunteers.” The Kookaburras are sponsored by Fortescue Metals group and Indigenous Services Australia to visit Roebourne School as part of their Indigenous program.

Inclusion WA works with community groups and sporting clubs in Karratha and surrounding areas providing a multi-sport holiday program to kids of all abilities living in and around Karratha. for them. They get to have the opportunity to see each other outside the school environment.” Denver De Cruz and Matt Shaw have been able to develop relationships with the kids and have learnt a lot about everyone. “We get to know everyone and learn about their families, their background and what they like,” De Cruz said.
Denver De Cruz, who is just one of the guys behind the program said that the swimming activity was a hit.
“The most important benefit of the Inclusion WA program is that more and more kids are getting involved.
“It is easy going, and the kids just love getting out there,” he said.
“Not just kids with disabilities, but mainstream kids, everyone is joining in and having fun.”
“The swimming program isn’t an overly structured program so it is a great start to slowly get active during the holidays. “The social aspect is great

It is open to all comers who are members of race clubs and who also join the northwest association. Tom Price Motox Club Peter Cooper said that racers have come from as far as Broome and Perth to compete in the race rounds. “Some rounds see state champions such as Ryan Lancaster, Robo Lovett and Teniel Morgan racing,” he said. “All comers who are members of the NW Association and have nominated to race in Tom Price round will be there. “The bikes will undergo scrutinising on Saturday morning to ensure they comply with regulations and are safe to race, followed by practice laps on the track for all divisions from 50cc class to the Pro Open class. “Sunday morning will see scrutinising take place again, with racing set to start early Sunday morning.” He said that race numbers vary from year to year, depending on how many
• Zantasia Bryers-Shelley keen to start racing with her KTM 50SX people are racing in the Pilbara. “But usually we average about 100-150 riders overall with spectators, families and support crews numbering around the 200 plus mark over the weekend. “The NW racing rounds are the biggest motocross events that are held in the Pilbara, equaling others such as the Newman Memorial and the Karratha challenge. “Anyone and everyone enjoys seeing the action of extreme motorsports and we encourage anyone to get their backsides trackside to any of the racing rounds we hold to either spectate or come and get some info on racing or joining the club. “We are always looking for
volunteers and new members to help out.
The Burrup Mountain Bike Club will hold its first race of the season this month on April 28. The BMBC 2012 season covers 10 races over the Karratha area, with the last race on September 30. The first race will be held at the Karratha Visitor Centre course on April 28 at 4pm, with the start position for the course being at a new location. Sprint karting at its best The Easter break saw a contingent of Sprint Kart drivers from around the Northwest converge on Karratha to compete in the first of five rounds in the 2012 Northern Zone Series Titles. Eighty plus drivers from Karratha, Hedland, Newman, Tom Price, Exmouth, Geraldton and Perth spent Good Friday setting up their race karts and preparing for what was to be a very long and hot day and night of racing come Saturday at the Karratha Kart Club in the LIA. Racing commenced at midday and went well into the evening as ten nominated race classes competed in four separate heats prior to the finals once the sun had set. The Open class took to the track first with some action aplenty as local driver Jeremy Pitt tried making a comeback after spending considerable time away from the sport.
His efforts were in vain as he struggled to keep the highpowered machine on the track due to a broken hand. At the end of the night it was Exmouth boys Alan Waddingham and Peter Maier who took first and second place at the end of the evening. Next up were the Sportsman 125 Light class and again Exmouth drivers were showing the remainder of the field what it is like to be up front with brothers Aiden and Kieran Passmore finishing first and third overall. Ryan Brown from Tom Price split the brothers to take second place. The young up and coming ProCadets were out in force putting in some great racing throughout the day with Tom Price kids Brayden Brown and Tyler Smith out-classing the remainder of the field. For Junior National drivers
Connor Whitlock and Braedyn Bowra, the trip from the city paid off as the Perth duo were able to hold out the rest of the class with a first and second overall. Liam Hagan from Newman rounded out the top three. The Junior Clubman class showed how Tom Price drivers could race when Travis Brown finished the meet ahead of local drivers Amie Gray and Caleb Barth. Local girl Kayla O’Keefe pushed the top three throughout the day but was not able to gain the advantage she required to make the podium. Michael Baumgarten from Hedland had an almost perfect race meet to hold out Geraldton driver Ken Stewart to take the win for the Sportsman 100 Heavy class giving Hedland its first trophy for the meet. Local driver James Lamb was very
lucky to escape serious injury and walk away in the 100 Heavy class when he locked onto fellow club member Clae Pike flipping his kart mid air then ending upside down in the tyre barriers. Exmouth again came to the foray when Aiden Passmore continued his streak by winning the Sportsman 100 Medium class ahead of local driver Ethan Barth. The time finally came for Karratha to take honours when local driver Marty Coutts took the majority of wins in the Restricted 125 Heavy class. Hedland rookies Archie Morrison and Gregory Gaudron ended their night second and third respectively. Next were the Restricted 125 Lights where Karratha’s Troy O’Keefe held off a very quick Nathan Wills from Hedland and fellow team member Andrew McLeod to gain victory.
McLeod finished third behind Wills to round out the Light class. The last class was the Sportsman 125 Heavies, which saw Hedland driver Mick Day, shine above the remainder of the field to win the overall. Newman driver Levi Hagan finished in second position followed by Nicola Duncan from Hedland. The day was well received by all who attended and special thanks went to Karratha Kart Club president Hans Barth and committee member Wayne Moritz for the work they both put in to make the day a successful one. The next Northern Zone Series will be held in Newman on May 5, 2012. Karratha Kart Club will hold its next club meeting on April 21, 2012.
