Unacceptable “Displacement, whether due to conflict or development, not only destroys the homes and livelihoods of indigenous peoples, but has an incalculable impact on their cultures and ways of life that are part of the rich and diverse heritage of the Philippines that must be protected or otherwise lost, perhaps forever.” This was the statement of United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons, Chaloka Beyani, as he expressed concern over the plight of indigenous peoples (IPs) who have been staying at the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP)-Haran compound in Davao City, saying their current situation is “neither acceptable nor sustainable.” Hundreds of IPs (or Lumads) have been staying at the Haran compound since May this year due to the militarization in their hinterland homes. For some reason, the police and military have taken it upon themselves to “rescue” them, saying they have been brought to Davao City against their will by progressive groups who have been using them as propaganda material and to fatten up their crowds during anti-government rallies. Things came to a head on July 23
when police, with support from the military, stormed the Haran compound to “free” the Lumads; they only succeeded in creating a commotion that resulted in the injuring of 10 persons. So what’s the truth? Did the Lumads come voluntarily to Davao City out of fear of the military, or are they being held against their will? Beyani gives us an unbiased and objective answer. The Special Rapporteur had spent ten days in the Philippines on July 21 to 31, 2015 at the invitation of the Philippine government primarily to check on the condition of those affected by typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan), which hit the country in November 2013. He also took the opportunity to visit other areas in the country, notably Mindanao, since the purpose of his visit was to address not only displacement caused by disasters but also other forms of displacement around the country. In his preliminary statements at the conclusion of his visit on July 31, Beyani said he made “wide consultations with different stakeholders, both governmental and non-governmental, including internally displaced persons themselves and some indigenous peoples at risk of displacement in different regions of the country.”
Beyani said what struck him was that indigenous peoples “have been particularly vulnerable to conflict-induced displacement in many regions, particularly in Mindanao.” He said he was concerned by the plight of some 700 IPs living in the UCCPHaran compound who have been displaced from their ancestral homes for several months due to long-standing conflict between the government and the New People’s Army (NPA) in their region. Beyani travelled to Davao City to consult the national and local authorities and the indigenous peoples themselves on this situation. He said the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) asserted that it is seeking to protect the communities and provide services to them in conflict regions. “However, the displaced IPs made it clear that it is their presence and that of the paramilitary groups in their communities that continues to create anxiety amongst the indigenous communities,” he added. Beyani said the community wishes to return to its lands “but stressed to me that they will only feel safe to do so if the longterm militarization of their region comes to an end and they can return with guarantees of safety, dignity and protection.” He said the IPs also described to him their alleged forced recruitment into the paramilitary groups Alamara, which is under the auspices of the AFP, and harassment in the context of the
on-going conflict between the AFP and the NPA. “Schools have reportedly been closed and/or occupied by the AFP or Alamara, hampering the access to education of indigenous children,” he said. Beyani also confirmed what progressive groups have been insisting: “Tribal leaders informed me that they are not being detained against their will at the UCCP centre in Davao, as is evident by reports of their periodic return to their communities.” Still, he said their current situation is “neither acceptable nor sustainable.” “It is essential to find a rapid and peaceful solution to their situation in full consultation with their legitimate leaders, with their voluntary and secure return to their ancestral lands being a high priority,” Beyani said. He then urged the government to consult the indigenous peoples themselves “and to give greater attention to addressing the causes of displacement, whether it be due to the militarization of their areas or due to development projects.” “This situation clearly demonstrates the massive and potentially irreversible impact of the on-going conflicts on displacement of such vulnerable communities who are often caught up in the conflict and suspected of involvement with armed groups,” Beyani said. Lost in translation
In my line of work, there is never a dull moment. Each day is a new day with new challenges. Part of my role, among many other things that I do, is to recruit candidates for vacant positions. At times, job applicants send their resume to multiple positions to increase their chances in landing a job. One day, I received an e-mail from one of my colleagues saying that one of the candidates she was looking at hiring also applied to one of the competitions I was handling. She said to me, “please send me her documents as it looks like I’ll be stealing her from you.” That statement baffled me because in my mind, this candidate couldn’t be possibly looking into another job. For one, I had already provided the offer letter to her and she had verbally told me that she was going to accept the job. Obviously, something must have happened that changed this candidate’s mind about the job. Although it turns out, she indeed wanted to pursue the other job, this new information was not exactly communicated to me.
However, as you can see, “it looks like I’ll be stealing her from you” does not exactly show any regard towards my efforts to hire this person. If I were to rephrase this statement, I would have worded it as, “the candidate has informed me that she has decided to pursue this other position.” It sounds so simple, right? Relaying a message to someone and then moving on with the assumption that person actually understood what you said? But too often, what we try to communicate gets lost in translation despite our best intentions. We say one thing and the receiver hears something else. Misunderstandings and frustration follow, and even conflicts can arise. Listening is the most fundamental component of interpersonal communication. Listening is not just about hearing, but an active process of understanding the messages of the speaker. In general, when a person is speaking, that person wants listeners to show “active listening” by responding appropriately to what they are
saying. Appropriate responses to listening can be both verbal and non-verbal. The most important and most widely used non-verbal response is eye contact. It is quite encouraging for the speaker when the listener pays attention to what they are saying. Eye contact shows that the listener is paying attention. Another type of nonverbal response is posture. An attentive listener leans slightly forward or sideways while sitting. Other signs are a slight slant of the head or resting the head on one hand. Another type of non-verbal response is the ability to stay away from distractions. The active listener will not be distracted and will avoid looking at a clock or watch, fidgeting or picking their fingernails. When it comes to verbal responses, there are a few things to be considered. When trying to understand a statement, show interest and desire to understand the other person. If you don’t understand what was said, use clarifying statements to avoid misinterpretation. For example, “You said she’s stubborn. What do you mean by stubborn? What does she do that makes her stubborn?” Another way would be to paraphrase. Translate into your
own words feelings the questions and key words. For example, “So you’re saying she’s stubborn because…” or “Tell me if I understand this correctly, you feel she’s stubborn because…” This indicates careful listening and helps the flow of the discussion. Summarizing is another way of active listening. Shorten and simplify what has been discussed. For example, “During the past half hour you and I discussed your concerns about…” or “Let’s go over what we’ve talked about…” Whether you are trying to improve communication with your spouse, boss or colleagues, there are ways to communicate clearly and effectively that would allow you to better connect with others and establish trust. In order to communicate effectively, individuals need to be responsible for both roles of speaker and listener to allow for clear and accurate understanding of messages. Men, say “yes” to health Dear Ate Anna, My husband is turning 50 years old next week. There is one thing that worries me. I have heard that men over 50 are more likely to get prostate cancer. But my husband does not like to see a doctor. The last time he went for a physical check up was about 10 years ago. (No kidding!) Ate Anna, what can I do to persuade my husband to go for a check up? Do you have any suggestions? Mrs. Castillo Dear Mrs. Castillo, Many men like your husband are reluctant to visit a doctor if there is not a problem right in front of their eyes. Some men will even put up with their ailments and discomfort for a few years, hoping that the symptoms will go away. By the time they drag themselves to see a doctor, what could have been a relatively simple-to-treat condition has become a serious health problem. Some men ignore their health and delay getting medical help because of messages they grew up with like, “Real men should be tough.” These men may see health complaints or going to the doctor as a sign of weakness. Sometimes people, both men and women, are just simply afraid of hearing what the doctor might tell them after a check-up. Prostate diseases, including cancer, are common problems for men over 50. The prostate is a small sexual organ, about the same size and shape as a walnut. It is located below the bladder and wraps around the urethra, the tube that carriers urine out from the bladder. The prostate produces fluids that mix with the man’s sperm to form semen. In addition to prostate diseases, men also have a higher risk than women for other health problems such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, as well as lung, liver and kidney diseases. However, many of these diseases are preventable and treatable if caught early enough. Doctors recommend that men of all ages have regular physical check ups. Men over 50 should also ask their doctor about special tests that can help detect early changes in the prostate gland. Early detection can help prevent prostate cancer and other prostate diseases. Mrs. Castillo, Ate Anna can see that you are very concerned about your husband’s health
and well being. But remember, “nagging” him to go to see a doctor probably won’t work. Don’t just get angry and call him stubborn. He might need some encouragement, especially since he hasn’t seen a doctor in a long time. You can tell him why it is important for him to go for a check up in a gentle way. Perhaps it would be helpful to remind him that looking after his health is not just for his benefit but that he is also doing it for you and the family. Tell him about your appreciation for him as a husband and his role in the family. This may help him realize the importance of maintaining good health – so he can continue to enjoy being with you all. You can ask him if there is anything you can do to help. For example, you could offer to make the appointment or go with him if that would make him feel more comfortable. These are only a few suggestions. If readers have other ideas on how to persuade men to go for a regular check up or have heard some success stories, please do not hesitate to e-mail Ate Anna at info@serc. mb.ca. Take care, Ate Anna. Who is focused on immigration in this election? The election has been called for October and the airways are filled with political advertisements trying to get you to vote for one party or another. It would appear from early observations that the Conservatives appear to have much more money for the campaign because you find their ads everywhere. Or perhaps the opposition parties are just slow off the mark. Vote for the Harper government if you are satisfied with their performance over the past 11 years or vote for the NDP or Liberals if you want change. Vote for the Green party if the environment is your overriding concern and Parti Quebecois if you live in Quebec and favour separation. The issues in the public eye range from the falling Canadian dollar, the overall poor economy, Bill C-51, the Senate scandal, the dropping price of oil, sovereignty over the north, threat of international terrorism, support for our veterans and government oversight. These are only a few of the issues that are being discussed. The issue of Justin’s Trudeau “hair” is an insult to the intelligence of all Canadians. The panel who discuss his youth and qualifications in TV commercials are not objective pundits but
actors paid by the Conservative party. I don’t know about you, but I prefer political advertisements that are issue based not character assassination. One of the topics that appears to have missed the national stage or public attention is immigration. I do understand the reluctance of the Harper government to stand on its immigration record over the past four years, because it has been dismal at best, and antiimmigrant in appearance. But what about the NDP and Liberals who both have a chance to become the next federal government? Will they redress the negative changes the Conservatives pushed through on immigration and citizenship reform? What is their position on immigration? Take time out to ask the different candidates what their individual positions are on immigration. The difference between the Conservatives and their opponents is that the Harper government does have to answer for its political record and legislation. In Winnipeg we have a number of MPs who have been very active in advocating for immigrant rights. The first name that comes to mind for me is Kevin Lamourex who has a great deal of support within the local Filipino community.
He is not alone in advocating for the rights of new Canadians but rightly deserves praise for his efforts on behalf of all newcomers to Canada. He and MPs such as Jinny Jogindira Sims have been active advocates for increased immigration and fairer application of the Immigration Act. Canada needs more representatives like these two to bring immigration to mainstream Canadians. All Canadians should be aware of the harsh changes that have been enacted in the last four years. At this point there will be some who object to my criticism of the Harper government’s record on immigration. My opposition is not new and can be found in the pages of the Pilipino Express and in my column. The only difference is that the various columns refer to specific changes, such as the rate increase for adult citizenship applications from $200 to $630 in roughly a twoyear period. Was this intended to encourage permanent residents to become citizens or discourage them? What about the change in residency requirement for old age applicants, doubled from ten to twenty years? Was this in response to abuse on the part of sponsored parents or a disincentive for newcomers to sponsor parents or grandparents? Remember the notorious closure of hundreds of thousands
of skilled worker applications that had been in the cue for several years? Did you forget that our immigration department cleared up the backlog of unprocessed files by returning the applications and refunding the fees paid? Whatever happened to fairness and consideration that are traditional values in Canada? What about the celebrated “Express Entry” that promises fast processing for the lucky few? Did you stop and wonder about all the others who don’t qualify? What about the sponsorship of parents and grandparents that has opened the last two Januaries with a very low cap? The experience is that very few get through and the cap is met within weeks. I have not even mentioned the 10,000 plus overseas foreign workers in Alberta who were affected by the time limitation of four years placed upon them. Did you know that representatives from both the Alberta Labour Federation and various Chambers of Commerce opposed this measure? What about the new four-year residency requirement for citizenship applicants or the increase in the age of persons who must be tested to 64 years of age? The obvious consequence is placing additional barriers to prevent permanent residents from becoming citizens. One possible reason is that permanent residents are easier to
remove from Canada than citizens. One commentator famously summarized the immigration and citizenship changes under the Harper government as harder to get in and easier to get kicked out. Immigration issues are important and slick advertising should not distract voters. It does not matter how compelling the advertising is, it is the facts that should matter. The immigration changes brought in over the past four years have not been positive even if the government would like us all to believe that applicants in backlogs are somehow responsible for the failure to process their applications in time. Why blame the victims? We had a very effective and fairminded immigration program that served Canada well. Why change it? This is the challenge of the Conservative government. Their challenge is to convince us all that the numerous changes, which I characterize as negative, were not really anti-immigrant. If not, what then? DFA explains Philippine passport backlog PHILIPPINES – Faced with a backlog of 42,230 passports, the Department of Foreign Affairs has promised to resolve the delays in passport processing in 15 to 20 days as it copes with an out-dated system and technical glitches that hamper the production of the travel document. “It has already been experiencing technological obsolescence. Parts of the system are beginning to break down,” DFA Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs Frank Cimafranca said in a press briefing on Thursday. “This is alarming,” said Cimafranca. The DFA receives a total of 12,000 passport applications a day. Instead of the normal seven to 15-day processing, Cimafranca said it came to a point where it had taken three months for some passports to be released. He admitted that the delays are already “way beyond the processing period,” but assured the public that the DFA is doing its
best to meet its target by repairing old machines. Under the prevailing system, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) prints the passports while a French company, Oberthur Technologies, provides maintenance and repair under an agreement with the BSP. Production faced problems because the old printing machines had not been upgraded since they were installed in 2009, the year the Philippine electronic passports were introduced. In time, DFA officials said the old system developed glitches and experienced slowdowns, causing production delays and compromising the system’s security. To address the lags, Cimafranca said the DFA has contracted the services of national printer, APO Production Unit, Inc., to print additional 5,000 passports in a high-security government-printing complex at the 485-hectare Lima Technology
Center in Lipa City, Batangas. Cimafranca said a new and modern passport system would soon be in place by 2016 once the Department of Budget and Management approves the P38-billion funding that would allow the DFA to purchase new machines. In the meantime, those with expired passports could have their passports extended for free, Cimafranca said. It can be extended for a period of not less than one year but not more than two years upon request while their new passports are being processed. Re-validated passports may be claimed on the same day, but Cimafranca said an application for renewal of passport must be filed simultaneously. The DFA on Friday, August 14 clarified that the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) “is not responsible for the unfortunate delays” that caused the current passport backlog.
“On the subject of current delays in the issuance of passports, we would like to further clarify the following,” said a statement from Secretary Albert del Rosario: “1. There have been unexpected delays and these are attributed to technical difficulties in view of the preparations for the transfer of the facilities from the current BSP site to its new
location in Batangas. These delays should be corrected within one month. “2. The recent statement issued to the media, which may have been interpreted to have attributed the delays to the BSP, was inaccurate. The BSP has been a valued partner of the DFA and its delivery of service has been more than acceptable and in accordance with expectations. “3. We regret that the DFA’s statement may have cast an unfair misimpression on the quality delivery of service and the full cooperation extended by the BSP.” Sources: Dept. of Foreign Affairs, GMA News, InterAksyon News

The poem that Rizal did not write August in the Philippines is Buwan ng Wika [Language Month] when Filipino is celebrated and promoted as the national language. During this month it is almost obligatory that somebody quote the familiar lines of the national hero, Jose Rizal: “Ang hindi magmahal sa sariling wika ay higit sa hayop at malansang isda, kaya ating pagyamaning kusa, gaya ng inang sa atin ay nagpala.” [Whoever does not love his own language is lower than a beast and a foul smelling fish. Therefore we must treasure it gladly, like our mothers who blessed us.] The tone is rather harsh but the advice given – to treasure our language – is commendable. However, Jose Rizal never said those lines, nor did he write the poem from which they were paraphrased. By now it is no secret that the poem Sa Aking Mga Kabata [To My Fellow Youth] does not belong to Jose Rizal. Many scholars doubted the authenticity of the poem for decades but it was only recently that matters seemed to converge with at least three near simultaneous exposés. In July of 2011, Virgilo Almario debunked it in his book Rizal: Makata, Ambeth Ocampo wrote a couple of articles about it in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and I
published a series of articles here in the Pilipino Express. Nevertheless, traditions are not easily discarded and many institutions continue to attribute the poem to Rizal. I clipped the above quotation from fil. wikipilipinas.org and the entire poem can still be found at www. joserizal.ph, a web site maintained by Jose Rizal University. What is the evidence? How do we know that Rizal did not write the poem that gave us the famous “stinky fish” quote? There are many clues in the poem itself. For example, the language is too precocious even for an eight-year-old prodigy like Jose Rizal. There are also details that betray a 20th century authorship while the poem was purportedly written in 1869. For me, however, the real clincher is the use of the word kalayaan [freedom], which appears twice in the poem. Kalayaan was not a common word in 1869 and there is irrefutable evidence that Jose Rizal himself did not learn the word until he was 25 years old. We know this because of a letter he wrote to his brother Paciano in 1886. Jose had written a Tagalog translation of Friedrich Schiller’s German play Wilhelm Tell and he wanted Paciano to review it. He
explained that he found it difficult to translate some of the concepts in the play: “My Dear Brother, There I’m sending you at last the translation of Wilhelm Tell by Schiller… I lacked many words, for example, for the word Freiheit or liberty. The Tagalog word kaligtasan cannot be used, because this means that formerly he was in prison, slavery, etc. I found in the translation of Amor Patrio the noun malayà, kalayahan that Marcelo del Pilar uses. In the only Tagalog book I have – Florante – I don’t find an equivalent noun.” Evidently, Rizal had not encountered the word kalayaan until he saw it in Marcelo H. del Pilar’s Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa [Love for the Native Land], which was his Tagalog translation of Rizal’s own Spanish essay, Amor Patrio. Naturally, if Rizal didn’t know the word kalayaan when he was 25 years old, he could not have written a poem in which the word appears twice when he was only eight years old. Who wrote the poem? Rizal wrote many things in his life apart from his two famous novels. He constantly wrote letters to friends and family, personal memoires, and essays for various magazines. A vast amount of his authentic writing has been preserved but apparently he never saved a copy of this now-famous poem or even bothered to mention it in writing in his entire lifetime. It is very clear that he had no connection to the poem. So, who is the true author? The earliest documented appearance of Sa Aking Mga Kabata was in a book published in 1906, almost ten years after Rizal’s death. Author Hermenegildo Cruz presented it as an example of modern naturalist Tagalog poetry in the book Kun Sino ang Kumathâ ng̃ “Florante” [The Person who Composed “Florante”]. Cruz introduced the work as “a Tagalog
The poem as it appeared in its earliest documented form in 1906, ten years after Rizal’s death. From Kun Sino ang Kumathâ ng̃ “Florante” by H. Cruz, pp. 187-188. The spelling here is relatively modern compared to Tagalog conventions of the 1860s, which followed Spanish spelling rules and therefore did not use letters such as K and W. Photo by Maureen Justiniano with enhancement by John Paul Sumbillo. language poem written by the hero Jose Rizal in 1869 when he was only about eight years old.” In a footnote, he added this about the poem’s provenance: “For this poem I am indebted to my friend, Mr. Gabriel Beato Francisco. This was given to him by Mr. Saturnino Raselis, a native of Lukban, who was a teacher (maestro) in Mahayhay in 1884. This gentleman was a very close friend of Rizal who gave him (the teacher) a copy of this poem himself, a symbol, apparently, of their close friendship.” Gabriel Francisco was a poet, novelist and the author of an 1899 play, Ang Katipunan. Mr. Saturnino Raselis, however, is a bit of a mystery. Rizal never mentioned this “very close friend” in any of his writing. Since Cruz was apparently the first to bring the poem to public attention, I would suspect that either he or
one of his sources was the true author. And since we can’t even be sure if Saturnino Racelis ever existed, we are left with only Cruz and Francisco. Did Francisco dupe Cruz with a phoney Rizal poem or were they in cahoots? Did one of these men commit a fraud by passing off his work as Rizal’s or did they attribute an anonymous poem to Rizal by mistake? With only circumstantial evidence — and my suspicions — I would place my bets on the poet, Gabriel Beato Francisco, as being the real author of Sa Aking Mga Kabata and the source of the malansang isda. For much more information on this story and citations of sources, read the series, “Something fishy about Rizal poem” at www.pilipino-express. com. There are times when it seems like everything you touch goes wrong or breaks. Then there are those times that simply leave you reeling from losses – a job evaporates, a business goes bankrupt, a spouse walks out, a house sale falls through, your car gets rear ended, or you get a diagnosis of a serious illness. These kinds of problems can be hard to bounce back from, especially if they come in rapid succession. Often good luck comes in pairs but bad luck comes in threes…. or fours, or fives. Some call that “three on a match” which is considered bad luck. Maybe it’s a coincidence of timing or maybe it’s feng shui. It could be your heaven luck, karma or an unfavourable planetary alignment, if you’re a follower of astrology. But no matter what the cause is, all you know is that you want the losing streak to end. So, short of praying to saints or crawling into a hole, what can you do to turn around a string of losses? Feng shui is always an available option, and taking a close look at your feng shui is a good way to try to shift some energy and begin the process of stemming the problems from showing up at your door in succession. Try these feng shui tips to help you stop losses and turn your chi around from one of loss and insecurity to stability and gain. Monthly stars. Most of the time when one thing after another breaks or bad luck just keeps coming like bullets out of a machine gun, it’s because there has been a change in the monthly energies that either hit your front door or your bedroom. The most serious energies come

from the numbers 2, 5, and 7, and when those stars fly to where you sleep (where you’re the most vulnerable), there can be a string of problems. How do you handle these? It helps to know in advance with a monthly calendar that gives you all the energies and tells when you to expect them — and most important — how to handle them. New items. Have you brought something into your home since the problems began? It could be predecessor energy that is causing the problems. Often antiques and other inherited or second-hand items carry their own energies with them. One person created a new patio out of bricks that, as it turned out, came from an old building that housed slaves. As soon as that patio was installed, she began having all kinds of problems and eventually tore it out and used brand new pavers. Look around. Has something changed in your neighbourhood or your home? Has a tree or shrub died? Don’t let trees and plants die a slow, agonizing death. At the first sign of decline, remove them and replace them with something lush and healthy. If you can view a cemetery from your home, it’s vital that you block this view and that your home is surrounded by great, growing dragon chi! This is a wonderful way to stop loss energy. Draining sleep — check your bed. Many people who suffer draining, losing energy are aligned with a negative energy when they sleep. For instance, the feet point directly out a window, or worse, toward a sink, bathroom, toilet or bathtub. This can cause serious loss of income, jobs and can even result in death. You are so vulnerable when you

Get off that losing streak– how to stem your losses with feng shui sleep; it’s crucial to be sure your feet are not in line with anything that can drain your energy as you sleep. Draining, losing views. If your home views a ditch, culvert, drain or other water run off area, your chi drains with it. Try to block the view with a beautiful bush or flowering shrub. Remember: chi flows where the eye goes and if your eye goes to a place of loss and downward flow, then that’s where your chi goes too. Look behind. Like the bed’s headboard at night, your home needs good support and the losing streak can be caused by what’s behind you that’s missing, such as support, or worse, eroding support. For example, if there’s a street directly behind your house, this represents water, and just like you shouldn’t turn your back to the ocean, water behind your home represents loss. Make sure you block this view if at all possible with something such as a fence or wall. If the land at your home slopes away from the back of your house, you are losing vital support. Adding trees and lighting behind the house will help give you some more support and stop some of the loss. Open your mind. When we have problems occurring in rapidfire succession, we often start saying, “What’s next?” or begin thinking very negatively, become overly judgmental, or even feel depressed. Those negative thoughts are a spiral that only goes in one direction: down. One of the ways to create a shift from negativity is to keep close tabs on your mental like and dislike thoughts. Judgment and negative thoughts and feelings can draw more negativity toward us. If anything, try to remain neutral or positive. Act friendly to draw
more friendliness and positive responses to yourself. Buy yourself flowers. Loss represents yin energy and emptiness. Combat that emptiness with vibrant, expressive yang energy. This is one of the best ways to stop yin energy from growing more yin. Keep the flowers fresh and replace them often. Keep fresh flowers in your home for a month to stem yin energy. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: Are cactuses by the front door a problem in feng shui? I live in Arizona and it’s the only thing that really grows here. Answer: This is the second week in a row someone’s asked about plants. Funny, how that works. Having cactuses by the front door is really the best place for them – so that’s good news for you. Because cactuses usually have points and sharp needles, they provide protective feng shui around the house. Inside the house, though, it would not be a good idea to have them because they send out poison arrows. It’s OK to have cactuses
by the front door as long as the needles or spines aren’t aimed at the door – that’s the important part. Otherwise, they’ll send out dangerous tiny poison arrows that harm your wealth, health and opportunities. Success conciousness This is the journey of a wealthy and healthy human being. A shift in mindset happens when you start to understand money and value. It is then when you realize that money is exchanged where value is created. Wealth skills begin to take over the way you think. In order to be success conscious, this paradigm shift needs to take place. When the seeds of success are planted, your brain begins to change itself. That means that you think trading your time for money,
dollars for hours is not for you. You start to value your time more than ever before. This is the beginning of having the end in mind. Once you start to value your time and yourself as a value creator you then find it impossible to put a price tag on your abilities. This is called “possibility thinking.” Now that you understand time, money and value as an individual, you will eventually be met with a limitation. The following limitation that stops most average performers in
business and life is a lever for the success conscious. The limitation is that you have 24 hours in a day with your work-rest cycle. Doesn’t matter how much you value your own time and worth when you’re only using your own time and talents. You begin to come into the understanding that time is not the most valuable asset, your attention is! This sets the stage for high performance and result orientation. A system of doing things emerges so that you can save yourself, time, energy and money. You duplicate yourself, your understanding of money, time and value, and you leverage other people’s time, talents, money and systematize the whole machine to trade goods
and services. You continue to do so until you automate the above process; freeing your own time so that you can put your attention on the things you desire and have no limitations on decision-making. This is called choice freedoms. You’re now accomplishing more than you ever thought possible in less time. You’re creating your own professional services enterprise. Turning your passions into profits. The name of your business is now (Insert your first and last name here) Corporation. You are your own business. Your business is simply an extension of your humanity and the things you love to do. Without this success consciousness, you’re destined to help others carry out their never-
ending success agendas instead of working toward yours. Believe me when I tell you this, the above process is happening with or without your consent. Those who are consciously aware are using this system to design their dream lifestyle and create lives of limitless possibilities. Becoming an Ironman Let’s meet Wystan Celestino, the first member to represent Sulong Triathlon Group in an Ironman race (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run) held in Boulder, Colorado on August 7, 2015. How did you get into triathlon? I needed something to keep me on the treadmill when I was trying to lose 30 to 40 pounds and preparing for a half marathon back in 2012. I got inspired from watching several Ironman and ultra-marathon videos. Back then, it was just a “maybe,” kasi di pa ko sanay lumangoy and my fitness was next to nothing. What made you decide to take on Ironman Boulder? It was on my bucket list and gift ko na din sa sarili ko before I turn 30 and to learn how to swim. Between several Ironman races [Boulder] is the closest to Winnipeg and maraming mapupuntahan for the whole family. Also time wise, I know I have to be conservative with my training kasi alam ko marami pa kong room for improvements at tweaking to do with all three disciplines kaya I decided to give myself seven months. Pero even though I had seven months I still started early in October with the training because I was really excited. What were your specific preparations for the race? September until November 2014, I was weight training by myself, working on my swimming muscles and some squats and my legs sa bahay. Then tried one month of the six-month plan before actually starting in New Year 2015 and getting ready to incorporate training into my full time job with base training from January to March and peak phase from April to July. Base training nagweweights pa din ako but noong peak phase na eh mostly endurance. How was your performance overall in Ironman Boulder? Coming into the race, I felt really ready but I also had a lot of doubts and the worst-case scenario was going through my head on race day. On race day, I felt really in the moment but I also brought a little too much gear for race day. I started last on the swim and just focused on my technique, tempo, and sighting in the water. I monitored my heart rate, making sure I was in Zone 2 at 130 beats per minute (bpm). During the whole bike [portion], I made sure I was cooling myself with water. [I kept between] 135 and 140 (bpm) in my half marathon, and between 140 and 145 (bpm) in the last half. People were collapsing and hitting the road due to heat and dehydration. An old lady lost consciousness while biking and had an accident at an aid station. Really scary stuff!
How do you manage your time between working as a fulltime nurse and training for the Ironman? I have a very understanding wife. I ensured that my family was well aware of my goals – what they and I have to do make this happen and the sacrifices that have to be done. I had to rewrite my schedule and find time anywhere I could. I had to work closer in the city instead of driving 1.5 hours back and forth in my previous job. My wife bought a Roomba, vacuum robot, to help decrease the workload. I asked my parents to cook more because sometimes I had to drop by their house after training to eat. On shorter workout days, I made sure that I was spending my time with family. I rearranged my workout schedule so my long ride fell on days (usually weekdays) when my wife is working, then spending time with her when she was at home. Really savouring my rest days up to the last minute. And if I missed a work out, I wouldn’t sweat it too much so it wouldn’t affect my next workout day. What’s your most indispensable gear? Watch and heart rate monitor. Sometimes, I don’t have time to do a tempo bike ride because I forget my helmet or its cold outside. The watch and the heart rate monitor help me reach a heart rate zone specific for that workout. What’s your favourite workout? For this Ironman training, my favourite had to be the swimming only because I know that I suck at it. I know that if I gut it out every workout I will have more room to improve, get faster, more comfortable swimming, then it will translate, hopefully, into more energy in the bike and run. In reality though, I like trail running or ultra running. Can’t wait to go back in the trail. Norman is a member of Sulong Triathlon Group. • Megan and Tom – Marimar’s sizzling love team • James and Nadine –Star in their first ever teleserye Kapuso prime artists – Megan Young and Tom Rodriguez – team up in one of GMA Network’s highly anticipated programs this 2015 – Marimar. In an interview, Megan reveals her excitement on portraying an iconic and well-loved character and how much she can relate in the story of a Filipina barrio lass. “This is definitely a great project to do. Marimar reflects that distinct Filipina characteristic of being able to face any challenge.” “Marimar is like any other Filipina who strives for the best. She’s a hard worker; she will do anything to reach her dreams. I am the same way – even if people told me that I might lose the pageant (Miss World 2013)… I put that aside because that was what I wanted. Win or lose, at least I did it. Marimar is the same in that even if she fails, she makes sure that the failure turns into encouragement for her to strive for the better,” added the multitalented actress. Equally excited is Megan’s leading man, Tom, who is very vocal about his preparations for the series. “I knew right away
CRISTY... From page 14 kaibigan.
when I first heard about it that it was going to be a big project, which is why I didn’t waste any time and started training. Right now, I started boxing and doing circuit training.” Despite being nervous, Tom is very much excited to take on the challenge of portraying the role of Sergio. “It’s a lot of pressure but at the same time, I’m very excited because I know I’m going to learn a lot on this project. Plus, Megan and I have a great working relationship so that lessens my nervousness. It would be a great and fun challenge to breathe new life to the character.” Marimar is definitely the primetime series to watch out for as it takes pride in bringing together some of the entertainment industry’s respected actors and actresses including Jaclyn Jose, Zoren Legaspi, Lauren Young, and Alice Dixson in her comeback project as a Kapuso. Joining the stellar cast are Nova Villa, Tommy Abuel, Carmi Martin, Ina Raymundo, Ricardo Cepeda, Jaya, Cris Villanueva, Dion Ignacio, Frank Magalona, Ashley Cabrera plus may nararamdaman siyang hindi maganda sa kaniyang katawan.

Too foul!” kuwento ng aming source.
They will not see anything good in her eyes, kalaban siya, kailangang ilaglag siya,” madiin pang sabi ng aming kausap.

CRISTY... From page 18 Recto.

– CSF

AUGUST 16 - 31, 2015
Barack Obama.

Maybe about three or four groups ang lalahok sa presidential race.
Kaparis din niyang naging pangulo by accident. Aba, malamang mabiyak
Paquito Rey Pacheco worked for 21 years in Philippine radio broadcasting.
