You know how various groups continue to urge government to push renewable energy (RE)? What you probably don’t know is that the Philippines is already one of the top RE countries in the world. A full 32 per cent of our electricity is produced from renewable sources, which is remarkable considering that China’s RE production is only 24 per cent of its total while the US’s figure stands at 14 per cent. It’s true that they produce far more renewable energy than we do (China generates more than a million gigawatts per hour [GWh] while the US produces 590 GWh), but they are also much bigger countries than we are. Besides, our 21,979 GWh RE production is nothing to sneeze at and is enough to put us in 31st place worldwide. The truth is the Philippines is already a leader in renewable energy. We are rich in a wide variety of RE sources such as hydroelectric, geothermal, solar, wind, and biomass, and we have shown a strong commitment to pursuing these energy sources. In fact, the Philippines increased its installed RE generation capacity by 45 per cent in the last decade alone, and by 2030 the total installed capacity will be 40% renewable. Also, believe it or not, the World Energy Council (WEC) index has placed the Philippines

PILIPINO EXPRESS

in the number one spot of the most environmentally sustainable countries in the world. In its 2016 Philippine Energy Trilemma Profile in 2016, the WEC based the rating on the country’s low carbon emissions (we emit less than 0.4 per cent of the world’s greenhouse gas) and the amount of investments in renewable energy. It also cited the government’s strong support for the development and use of renewable energy in the country. The Philippine Energy Plan 2012-2030, for example, sets a framework for the development of energy resources in the country, highlighting the role of Renewable Energy and its development following the provisions of the Renewable Energy Law. Current laws also promote RE, such as Republic Act 9513 or The Renewable Energy Act of 2008, which promotes the development, utilization, and commercialization of renewable energy resources. This law produces incentives to RE producers, including tax holidays, special tax rates, dutyfree importation of equipment, and special Feed-in Tariff (FIT) rates. FIT rates are guaranteed electricity rates given to qualified RE producers as an incentive to develop renewable energy technology. The RE Law also legislated the

DECEMBER 1 - 15, 2017

The Philippines is leading the way in renewable energy creation the following: • Renewable Portfolio Standard — Minimum percentages of energy generation that must come from renewable energy sources • Renewable Energy Market — A market for trading electricity from renewable sources similar to WESM • Green Energy Option system — A proposed program that will allow end-users to choose and directly contract renewable energy resources as their sources of energy But despite the great strides the Philippines has made, renewable energy still has its limitations. For one, it is by nature intermittent because natural factors like weather, season, and location can affect the availability of the energy sources. Scalability is also an issue with RE because some power plants cannot generate large quantities of energy — at least not without investing large amounts in infrastructure and land requirements. And then there is the problem of storage capability: energy from RE sources (save for hydro) cannot be stored and must thus be consumed right away once generated. Other issues are high generation costs, high tariffs (which is the

problem with the above-mentioned FIT, which government passes on to consumers), and permitting issues since it can take a long time to acquire permits especially when projects span multiple municipalities and barangays. Despite these challenges, there is really no turning back for us. The Philippines will continue developing renewable sources of energy, and new projects and developments will help boost the renewable energy portfolio of the country. As President Rodrigo Duterte has said many times, we should not be pressured by other countries because really, they are the ones that must catch up with us first. While RE is still relatively expensive, we are still free to explore other energy sources — after all, we contribute a negligible amount of greenhouses gases to the atmosphere. New study debunks the beauty premium theory Historically, economists have widely documented the “beauty premium” and “ugliness penalty” on earnings. Social scientists and natural philosophers have also specifically recognized the existence of the so-called “beauty premium” and “ugliness penalty.” The premise of this theory is around the belief that attractive lawyers and MBA grads earn more than their average-looking counterparts. It is believed that the result may be due to human affinity to connect appearance with character. In the eighteenth century as an example, a face was believed to reflect a person’s “moral standing.” “Virtue beautifies, and vice renders a man ugly,” Johann Kaspar Lavater, a respected theologian and physiognomist, wrote. In fact, in 2011 a Wall Street Journal study found that skinny women made more money than women of average weight. The same study also found that thin men actually made less money than larger men. Sue Schellenbarger of the Wall Street Journal reported that larger men “earned more as

they packed on the pounds – all the way to the point where they become obese, when the pay trend reverses.” Another study conducted at the University of Florida by Timothy A. Judge looked at separate studies of 11,253 Germans and 12,686 Americans and found that women weighing 25 pounds less than the average weight group earned an average of $15,572 a year more than women of average weight. The study also found that earnings for women diminished the more they weighed. For example a woman who gained 25 pounds above the average weight earned an average of $13,847 less than an averageweight woman. However, despite of previous data and commonly held beliefs, a new study in 2017 has found that how much a person gets paid does not depend on how attractive they are. Researchers from the London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of Massachusetts in Boston measured the physical attractiveness of the survey participants on a five-

point scaled over the last 13 years from a rating of 1 being “very unattractive” to 5 being “very attractive.” The participants were also asked for their gross earnings of the previous years. Based on the information gathered and reviewed, the researchers found a significant relationship between salary and levels of attractiveness. According to Satoshi Kanazawa from the London School of Economics and Political Science, “Physically more attractive workers may earn more, not necessarily because they are more beautiful, but because they are healthier, more intelligent and have better personality traits conducive to higher earnings, such as being more conscientious, more extraverted and less neurotic.” The new study therefore debunks the beauty premium theory particularly when factors such as health, intelligence, and major personality factors are considered with other links of physical attractiveness. The analysis therefore also showed that people are not necessarily discriminated against because of their looks.

On the other hand, for Shawn D’Souza, talent acquisition manager at Workopolis, “hiring an employee and determining their pay scale should be based on skill first.” For him, being attractive has its own advantage but having been a recruiter for all his professional life, in his view, it all depends on who can do the job well. Changes to MPNP application stream The government of Manitoba has announced changes to the Provincial Nominee Program with the introduction of an indemand occupations list and a new pathway to Canada’s Express Entry program. These changes continue the redesign of the MPNP to provide different ways for skilled worker applicants and business investors to immigrate to the province. In-Demand Occupations List The MPNP In-demand Occupations list provides a regularly updated listing of which occupations qualify as “in-demand” in Manitoba. There is a vast array of high-skill occupations found under general categories: 1. Business, finance and administration occupations; 2. Natural and applied sciences and related occupations; 3. Health occupations; 4. Occupations in social science, education, government service and religion; 5. Occupations in art, culture, recreation and sport; 6. Sales and service occupations; 7. Trades, transport and equipment operators and related occupations; 8. Occupations unique to primary industry and; 9. Occupations unique to processing, manufacturing and utilities. The occupations list will be updated according to changing occupational demand in Manitoba. For a detailed list of

the occupations currently included on the In-Demand Occupations List, search www.immigrate. com/immigrate-to-manitoba/indemand.occupations. Re-structured Processing Streams The restructuring includes changes to three existing application streams: MPNP-B or business immigration; the Skilled Worker inside Manitoba stream; and the Skilled Worker Overseas stream. The changes also include the introduction of a new International Education Stream. The MPNP-B has been renamed the Business Investor Stream (BIS), effective immediately. BIS is subdivided into the Entrepreneurial Pathway and the Farm Investor Pathway. BIS will prioritize applicants who start up business ventures within 12 months of their arrival in the province, especially those whose intention is to start up businesses outside of Winnipeg. Applicants in this category will be issued a good faith deposit of $100,000. The applicants must demonstrate that they will purchase an existing Manitoba business or establish a new venture before obtaining their permanent residence. The changes will take effect by the end of the first quarter of 2018. The skilled worker stream, both inside Manitoba and overseas, will see significant changes

with the introduction of a highdemand occupations list. These occupations will be used to place selection priority from the online EOI (Expression of Interest) submissions. The use of the list is seen in the changes within Skilled Worker Overseas stream, which is subdivided into two pathways – the Manitoba Express Entry Pathway and the Human Capital Pathway. The Express Entry pathway is a new way for the MPNP to work in concert with the federal Express Entry processing stream. Starting January 2018, the MPNP will be able to nominate qualified applicants who meet the requirements for Canada’s Express Entry system and have an active EOI profile with the federal stream. Priority will be given to applicants who have a minimum of six months experience in a highdemand occupation as well as a close friend or family supporter in the province. It is important to take note that only high skill occupations with an O, A or B skill level and persons with language proficiency levels of CLB 7 are included (base requirements for Express Entry). The Human Capital Pathway is for skilled workers abroad who have skills and training required by the In-demand Occupations List and demonstrate their potential to establish themselves in Manitoba upon arrival. Special

consideration will be given to family connections and supports as well as post-secondary studies or work experience in Manitoba in the last five years in order to qualify. The Skilled Worker InManitoba stream will also be revamped. The changes include a subdivision into two pathways: the Manitoba Work Experience Pathway and the Employer Direct Recruitment Pathway. The Manitoba Work Experience Pathway is for applicants who are currently working inside the province as overseas foreign workers (OFW) and whose jobs are not included on the In-Demand Occupations List. This would include applicants in semi-skill positions at C and D level. The Employer Direct Recruitment Pathway is for international applicants with job offers from preapproved Manitoba employers. The new processing stream is the International Education Stream, which is designed for international foreign students graduating in Manitoba whose skills meet the needs of Manitoba employers. Beginning in April 2018 the new steam will target graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics – especially those who are completing an internship that supports industry innovation. The MPNP has announced that international student applicants

who meet these qualifications – who have found a long-term job in an in-demand occupation – will no longer have a waiting period before applying (not even six months). “The new International Education Stream will make it easier for international students with a Manitoba education to build their careers and settle here in the province,” said Manitoba’s Education and Training Minister, Ian Wishart. The details of the many changes announced will become clear by April of next year. It is important for potential applicants to be aware of the changes and how they might fit. The MPNP has moved in positive way to restructure its application streams to compliment the federal Express Entry system. If you have questions about the changes you can contact the MPNP directly or consult with a licensed immigration consulting company or immigration lawyer. Philippines’ drug war: Attacking the symptom of a larger problem A couple weeks ago, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed that he brought up human rights and extrajudicial killings in a discussion with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on his war on drugs. Trudeau claimed Duterte was “receptive to [his] comments, and [that] it was … a cordial and positive exchange.” When Duterte was asked at a news conference about how he responded, he stated it was a “personal and official insult” and that he “only answer[s] to the Filipino… not… to any other bullshit, especially [from] foreigners.” It is interesting to see Duterte lash out at Trudeau, disregarding his comments as coming from a “foreign” perspective, given that there is a critical perspective and analysis amongst Filipinos of the President’s policy to addressing drug abuse in the country. These include Filipinos living on the Philippine islands as well as abroad. While Duterte was elected by a landslide in June 2016 – 6.6

million more than the candidate who came in second – recent polls are suggesting that his approval rate is dropping. It is worth mentioning that this drop has been in poor, urban areas, where many residents have become part of the statistic of over 7,000 individuals killed for allegedly being drug dealers or users. This is despite them making up a large part of Duterte’s support base during last year’s campaign. Illegal drug abuse has become a widespread and pervasive public health issue in the Philippines. There has been much debate around a comprehensive strategy and actionable solutions to address the issue. On one hand is prevention and treatment – on the other, sanctioned elimination by murder. While the second method seems straightforward – eliminating the problem by literally terminating the lives of people who are allegedly currently involved, there is no evidence that would suggest that this would lead to the complete eradication of

addiction and criminality related to illegal substances. Based on the Philippine government’s Drug Dependency Examination, there are a number of levels or categories of “drug user,” depending on one’s level of drug use: experimenter, social recreational user, habitual user, drug abuser, and drug dependent. While experimenters, social recreational users and habitual users can be treated in outpatient centres, drug abusers and drug dependents have developed a syndrome in that they lose control over their use and their mental processes are affected. This is why for drug dependents, also referred to as “addicts,” basic needs become re-ordered – where drugs supersede food, shelter, clothing and healthy relationships. Drug addiction is a disease that is misunderstood. While treatable, treatment acknowledges a cycle of repeated relapse – interventions are not a one-time thing, but require a long-term, holistic approach, such as in the treatment of other chronic diseases. It is important to ask the questions that look at the core of the problem – to find the heart of

the beast, instead of just chopping off parts of it only to have them spontaneously regenerate. What are the root causes? What are the underlying factors? Why are people buying and using drugs? Why is there a demand? And what is the most effective way of stopping the demand? In the slums of the Philippines, street children sniff a solvent called “rugby” in plastic bags to alleviate their hunger pangs. Others, the working poor, smoke, snort, inject or swallow shabu, also known as crystal meth, to stay awake at night in order to earn a bit more money. Addiction does not discriminate; it can affect anyone, regardless of socio-economic status, sex or gender, age, or culture. That being said, it is the most vulnerable in the Philippines who are the most affected. They are drawn to substance use to survive, excluded from treatment because of a lack of resources, and susceptible to being murdered if alleged to be using or struggling from addiction. Drug use is a symptom of a much larger problem. Attacking one symptom of the problem does not get rid of the problem.

Land-grabbing from farmers and the economic dominance of foreign-controlled, hegemonic companies leads to corruption and disempowerment of Philippine industry. Without home grown production, Filipinos experience poverty, high unemployment, and are forced to emmigrate in search of better opportunities. Unfortunately, the killing of one portion of the population will not fix any of these problems, nor is it likely to yield a solution. As we approach International Human Rights Day on December 10, and the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights next year, it is an opportune time to reflect on humanity and to work on developing a deeper understanding of the issues. Although we no longer reside in the Philippines, including many of us youth who were born here in Canada, as Filipinos we are still impacted by the struggles of those left behind because we see ourselves in them. Let us not be quick to judge and condemn. Johsa Manzanilla is Amnesty International’s Country Coordinator for the Philippines and the Director of ANAK.

Goal setting for a meaningful Christmas season December is here and I’m sure that people are feeling the busyness of the season! Although Christmas is a special time for family and friends to slow down and spend time with each other, people tell me that they feel pressured to get things done in the time period before December 25. One way to prevent feeling overwhelmed and tired is to sit down and set out some goals for the next few weeks. Goal setting is important because it helps to establish a predictable routine, to set priorities when there are so many demands on your time and energy, and to accomplish tasks that are most important to you. Step One: Sit down with a calendar so that you can get a

good idea of time management. Step Two: Ask yourself, “What is the most important to me?” and make a list. For example, family dinner at your house and attending church on December 25 might be the most important things on your list. Keeping focused is helpful because if you find yourself worrying about something, ask yourself, “Is it on my list?” If not, let it go. So for example, if your coworkers suggest going out for dinner during the next few weeks and it is not on your priority list, you can feel better when you politely decline the invitation. This is because you will know that it is not a priority for you right now.

Step Three: Plot out the events on your calendar and make a “To Do” list for each event. For instance, planning for your family party might mean going to the grocery store, shopping for the gift exchange, and setting up the decorations. For your work party, you might have to bake cookies or shop for new shoes. Also, kids’ school events might come up too, and you have to make another list for them (e.g. attend their Christmas concert, bring treats for their class, buy a gift for their teacher). People have told me that when they mark these tasks down on a calendar (sometimes in different coloured pens!) they feel more organized. Step Four: Not a lot of people think of doing this step, but it might be helpful to ask, “What can sabotage or ruin these goals?” Just knowing what they

might be can help to prevent these things from happening. For instance, some people know that they tend to procrastinate on accomplishing tasks. Or for others, they are caring for elderly parents or very young children, and time can run out. In order to be more pro-active, you can plan to ask others for help. Or plan to reward yourself with small things if you get things done (e.g. I can watch my favourite movie or buy a treat for myself if I get all my shopping done this weekend). Keep in mind that successful goal setting is: • Important to you • Realistic and achievable (e.g. “I will make one dish, not ten dishes”) • Specific (e.g. “I will wake up at 7:00 a.m. to prepare”, not “I’ll get things done somehow”) • Written down into a calendar

• Measurable (e.g. “I know that I will be done gift shopping when I have 10 wrapped gifts under the tree”) • Time framed (e.g. “I will be finished all of my Christmas baking on December 15”) The advantages of goal setting for this busy time of year is that it establishes a schedule, prioritizes items when there are many demands, is a way to accomplish tasks that are important to you, and increases self-esteem and confidence through a sense of accomplishment. In addition, goal setting reaffirms the future and gives meaning and purpose to life. My holiday wish for you all is that you have a meaningful and joyous Christmas season! Change makers Three years ago, my little family went through a significant change and 2014 proved to be full of many happy times and sadly, some very low times. It was that year that I left a comfy job running the communications department for Manitoba’s largest school division. It was a great place to work, filled with amazing employees and even more amazing students. I still remember the daunting task of planning a communication strategy for 77 schools and 35,000 students. I knew each one of those students had a story to tell and I made it my mission to try to share them all. My tenure was cut short as I decided to go and work for then-Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz. It wasn’t long after I took the position that he decided he would not run in the next election. I had a few months’ notice, but for the first time since I was 16, there was a possibility I might be jobless. Surprisingly, I wasn’t overly concerned, as I always tend to land on my feet. In my search, I found my dream gig on Vancouver Island, where I am now. Thankfully I rocked my interview, and on my way home after the interview, I got the call and they offered me the job! It was that year that we moved the Burgos bunch to the island. The family didn’t put up

much of a fight, as they knew it would be a new, fun adventure. We left our family and friends behind, like many of you, when you moved to Winnipeg from back home. I miss my family terribly; I took it for granted that my mom was only minutes away. Thinking back now, I wish I spent more time with her. There is a silver lining to that story, as my mom is not afraid to make the trip to the island once a year. It’s then that we can spend quality time together, touring the parks or walking the trails. I will try and convince her to come out once again this winter. Wish me luck! 2014 was also the same year that our little Bella came to be. If you know my family or have read past articles, you’ll know that Bella had transitioned in the summer of 2014. I will forever remember the innocence and significance of her question to Elizabeth, “How long do I have to live inside a boy’s body?” Our hearts were full of gratitude for all the support we received from family and friends. Granted, many didn’t really know what transgender meant, but they were willing to learn. The first few days of school went smoothly. But as some you know, it wasn’t smooth sailing from there. I won’t get into the nittygritty details, you can easily find

that online, but certain events happened that caused a ripple effect in our lives. Little did we know, that those ripples would eventually cause waves across Canada and other parts of the world. Bella’s story made headlines. We were conducting interviews on the radio, in newspapers, on TV and on Skype. In October of that year, we approached the Manitoba Human Rights Commission and asked it to consider our human rights filing. After some meetings and discussions, it was determined that the Commission would take up our grievance against the school division. Our story would continue to make the news over the better part of two years. In the end, our goals were achieved. The school division agreed to educate its staff and students, it created clear gender identity guidelines and agreed to train employees on how to properly address situations like ours in the future. It was a win-win for us all. However, we could not have

The Burgos family during a special tour of the newly built Canadian Museum for Human Rights in 2014 prepared for the news we received earlier this year. The Manitoba Human Rights Commission had contacted my wife in the spring letting us know that they are celebrating the 30th year of the Human Rights Code. The Code replaced the former Human Rights Act, which was passed in 1970. The reason they were contacting us you ask? The Commission had chosen four stories of significance from the past 30 years and ours was one of them! From one of the most challenging and lowest points in our life came a remarkable

honour. Elizabeth and Bella had flown back to Winnipeg to be filmed for the anniversary project. On November 3, 2017, the Commission celebrated its anniversary at the Manitoba Legislative Building and unveiled the video. My family would like to thank all of our supporters near and far. You will always be remembered! To watch the video, scan the QR code or search for the video on YouTube. Mabuhay! Dale manages the communications department for a school district in BC.

Educational communities: Building relationships in the classroom I had the honour to recently be a panellist at the Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers Inc. (MAFTI) and Seven Oaks Filipino Employees Association (SOFEA) collaboration Teachers’ Panel 2017. I was asked to speak about the Manitoba school culture and system. I had to think about what were the key ideas that I wanted to share for these aspiring teachers (or internationally trained teachers wanting to work in Winnipeg). This is the list that I came up with as I listened to the speakers before me. I wanted to share it with you all as well, because I feel it applies to families, their student learners, and other educators. 1. Building relationships 2. Student-centred learning 3. Advocating for yourself 4. Finding balance

Today, I’m focusing on building communities through building relationships. For this series of articles, instead of doing just Parent Tips, I’m extending this to educators as well. Educator Tips: Communicate, communicate, communicate! I’m going to be realistic with you. Teaching is not running through a field or forest with happy woodland creatures (no career is). We don’t play all day, and we don’t babysit either. We have a job to do, and we have to be as resilient as we expect our students to be. Relationships are key to building a successful classroom. This means relationships with your students, their families, your colleagues, and your administrators. Communication is key. You don’t teach in isolation – your grade

team and other colleagues are here to support you. Stay humble, don’t make it a sink-or-swim situation, and ask for help. When I say, “ask for help,” I don’t mean only when you hit panic mode. If you have a good day, share some things that went well with a colleague. You don’t know how helpful this can be to someone else. Your administrators are also there to help you grow. Communicate with them regularly about what you need to be successful! When it comes to students and their families, I’ll let a TEDTalks speak for this point. I encourage educators at any point in their career to watch the TEDTalks by Rita Pierson called Every Kid Needs a Champion. Build those relationships! Parent Tips: Stay connected

It takes a village to raise a child. After doing a round of parent-teacher interviews (we call them tri-conferences), I noticed that parents are always asking what they can do at home to support their child’s learning. My recommendation is to communicate regularly with your child’s educators. Here are some ways this can be done: 1. Direct messaging Many educators are now using apps and web-based networks that connect to families at home. My classroom uses SeeSaw, some educators use EdModo or Edublogs, others use G-Suite for Google Classroom. These apps allow you to direct message your child’s teacher and these apps usually get updated regularly to give you a glance at the learning your child is doing. 2. E-mail or phone call These are more “traditional” ways to communicate. E-mail the teacher if his or her information has been made available, or give the school a phone call and that

teacher can get back to you. 3. Agendas or written notes Many educators use some kind of agenda for homework tracking. Use this to communicate, or send a note to school with your student. This may be more challenging if your child forgets to pass forward the note. Connect with your child’s teacher and see which type of system works best to communicate if you have questions! “Little Manila” Community Center vandalized On October 9, the Little Manila Community Center in Stockton, California, was vandalized in what was likely a hate crime during Filipino American History Month. According to members of the community centre and police in Stockton, windows were damaged, donated photos on display were torn down, and offensive graffiti littered the windows. NBC News reported that students who participate in the centre’s education programs were the first to discover the scene the next morning. Students were reportedly “distraught” and confused about why someone would vandalize a building that represents their community identity. Police reported that the centre was the only victim of vandalism and that no other storefronts in the area were damaged. While police investigated the event as vandalism, the racial undertones of graffiti messages led Filipinos in Stockton to call it a hate crime. The damage was not immediately cleaned up by the centre, which felt it would be a poignant reminder of the community’ struggles with racism in the past. A statement from the group’s Facebook page reads: “As we celebrate Filipino American History Month

this October, we know that discrimination against Filipino Americans is nothing new. The street our Little Manila Center is on is Main St. in downtown Stockton, which was the dividing line for people of color in this city in the 1920s and 1930s. People of color were not welcomed north of Main St. and signs saying ‘Positively no Filipinos allowed’ were displayed openly. It was illegal for Filipino men to marry White women in California.” The statement went on to say, “Little Manila Foundation and our Little Manila Center will continue to be a space for understanding and love, bringing together diverse communities. This incident only strengthens our resolve and reaffirms the work that we are already doing.” Messages on Twitter echoed the same spirit. User @WTFitzMariaTho tweeted “I’m broken but this doesn’t stop what Little Manila does, it just motivates our programs to continue our movement stronger.” User @celiiry expressed much of the frustration felt by community members and supporters: “This is just proof that discrimination, oppression, and colonization will continue to exist. How can you do us justice if we can’t even be”. Celin Corpuz, a student in

the Little Manila After School Program and the Ethnic Studies Program, “Us” History, stated that the centre received many donations from “different Filipino-American organizations particularly from colleges,” including the University of California at Davis’ Filipino American organization. According to the Little Manila website (www.littlemanila.org), the organization “advocates for the historic preservation of the Little Manila Historic Site in Stockton, California and provides education and leadership to revitalize our Filipina/o American community.” The organization aims to preserve Stockton’s Little Manila and Filipino heritage through education, arts and cultural programs, environmental advocacy, and political advocacy for the overall well being of the Stockton community. Stockton has long been a site

of Filipino Americans. From the 1920s to the 1960s, it had one of the largest populations of Filipinos living outside of the Philippines. Carlos Bulosan, who wrote America is in the Heart, spent a lot of time in the community. Dawn Bohulano Mabalon, Associate Professor of History at San Francisco State University and co-founder of the Little Manila Community Center, documented the history of Stockton in the recent book, Little Manila is in the Heart. Little Manila was an area in Stockton where the Filipino population was centred, and it has dealt with a number of threats to its existence due to development, such as the construction of a freeway through the community in the 1960s. The event, which has disturbing racial undertones, is a reminder that Filipinos in the United States continue to face

racism and discrimination, as they do around the world. In Canada, the federal government worked hard to prevent Filipino immigration – simply because Filipinos are from Asia – until they needed they labour in the 1950s and 1960s. The event did bring out the best of the community, however, revealing the support and allies that the Filipino community in Stockton has. I am sure that Winnipeg can count itself as one such ally. Golden feng shui – Wealth enhancing tips In the pantheon of metals, gold is by far the most highly prized metal in the world. Many nations back their currency to gold, and investors follow gold’s ups and downs in the stock market. Asian countries, like India and China, are smitten with the metal. Indians often purchase gold as an investment and as a way to store their money, often buying beautiful and elaborate jewellery pieces as a sign of wealth and for its ability to retain its value despite currency shifts. But China really shines when it comes to being a country in love with gold. Like India, many Chinese buy gold as a hedge against currencies and as a sign of good luck, with many purchasing gold at the start of a new year. Almost anything you can imagine is coloured gold in China. Pens are covered in gold to confer wealth upon those who write with them. Ornate golden decorations are displayed in homes and businesses as a wealth enhancer and to show off good fortune and welcome even more prosperity. Golden coins are hung from door handles, cash registers, windows, and desks. Gold is glorious in China and feng shui.

In feng shui, all metals are associated with the planets in our solar system, but the one most auspicious of them all? Yes, it’s glittering, sun-infused gold. Gold, with its warm glow, represents the sun, the centre of our solar system and around which all other planets rotate, making it magnetic. Golden objects are considered more auspicious because they have the sun’s yang energy infusing them and are considered more potent for magnetizing and attracting greater wealth. Even if platinum is costlier than gold, it’s gold that’s coveted by more individuals and nations, and is displayed as a source of power and wealth. Gold is important because of its ability to generate water, or money and income, in feng shui. It’s also a symbol representative of heaven and heaven’s favour, and the sun’s magnetic pull. Use the colour gold to create wealth and prosperity and to infuse your life it with gold’s powerful symbolic energy and magnetism. Here are tips to get you started. 1. Use gold to attract favour, heavenly assistance, helpful people and to initiate projects. Gold is magnetic and attracts attention. This is the metal that can gain you favour, and draw

helpful people and mentors to you. Wearing gold and displaying gold objects on your desk, for example, helps to attract powerful people to your side, giving you first shot at opportunities and making everything easier by opening doors for you. 2. Carry a golden dragon. Displaying a golden dragon or carrying one as a keychain or purse charm can add wonderful energy for making money, windfalls, and for opportunities to fall easily into your lap. 3. Carry gold in your wallet. Purchase a small gold ingot or coin to carry in your wallet or handbag to attract more money and help you make ever increasing income. If that’s not feasible, carry a bright gold three-tie coin in your wallet or handbag to boost your wealth attracting ability. Look for gold lining in your handbags or wallets for more auspicious energy. 4. Activate the gold corner of your home. In feng shui, the gold corner of your home is the northwest corner of the man of the house, or the breadwinner direction. This is also the direction of heavenly assistance and helpful people. Placing an auspicious golden object here enhances the breadwinner energy, attracts a man if you are a single looking for a

man in your life, and activates the helpful people sector that brings heavenly assistance to you. 5. Wear gold to attract money. Beautiful glittering gold jewellery is warm and enhances skin color, and helps you attract wealth. Wear gold to important meetings and to look and feel wealthy and prosperous. If you have real gold, all the better. Look for gold jewellery and gold hardware on anything related to money, such as a handbag or wallet. In fashion, gold with white, black and blue colours symbolizes the productive cycle of making money and creating opportunity. Gold is a metal that transmits energy and that creates the water energy in the colours of blue and black. When gold is paired with white, you have a combination that positively beams power and authority – and gets you attention of powerful allies. 6. Display gold in your home. Add golden shiny elements to your home, such as lamp bases, bowls, or figurines in gold. Whether you choose a goldingot filled wealth bowl or a golden Happy Buddha, there is no question that having a golden and glittering home will help to create an auspicious and wealth enhancing atmosphere for making you wealthy – and infuse your home with the sun’s powerful yang energy. Their shining colour adds extra prosperity energy to your home and activates it for wealth. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My life seems like a constant struggle. I have a good job and own my own home, but it just seems like I have to work so hard for everything. What can I do to make things easier? Answer: I can appreciate your struggle and feeling like it’s you against the world. There are probably others reading this who feel the same way you do. One of the things that is a blessing is finding the right people at the right

time who help you. It’s a lot like coming out of a store with your arms full of packages and trying to get out the door with it all and someone walks up and sees your struggle and holds the door open for you, so you walk through the door easily. Or, the person is indifferent and lets the door close in your face and you struggle with the bags and trying to open the door. When you have heavenly assistance, it comes from having a strong northwest corner. This corner helps you find the doctor that finally solves your medical mystery, or you have someone who calls you about a job opportunity, or the person at the airline ticket counter helps you get that upgrade to first class on your long flight. When you have that kind of luck, it makes all those little bumps in the road of life seem smoother, easier and like the Universe likes you and wants to help you! For that to happen, be sure to activate your northwest corner of helpful people. This is also the heaven location, and activating it can help you have those nice little surprises that make life enjoyable and easier. Tip No. 4 above tells you how. Lastly, I want you to focus on people helping you by telling yourself how lucky you are to have such wonderful mentors and heaven people in your life. I do that all the time for parking places, telling myself “I always park up front,” and boom! There’s a spot – right up front. So activate your northwest corner of your home or living room and then activate your mind! CRISTY... From page 12 gintong hawla.

Mabuhay! Assalamu alaikum! Greetings of Mabuhay (long live, cheers) and Assalamu alaikum (peace be upon you) were exchanged among women at the “Sister to Sister Lunch” on Sunday, November 26. The event, which was initiated by the Canadian Muslim Women’s Institute (CMWI) and Pinays Manitoba, presented the theme, “Building Bridges between Filipino and Muslim Women.” It was held at the Daniel McIntyre

Collegiate Institute from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Close to one hundred ladies attended the event that was designed to provide an opportunity for women from the Filipino and Muslim communities to meet and know more about each other over lunch and round table sharing sessions. The goal was that through the interaction, they might be able to create lasting relationships – and perhaps, act as bridge

between the two communities to promote friendship and better understanding of their respective cultures and traditions. Volunteers from Pinays MB and CMWI acted as facilitators and recorders. The keynote speakers were Flor Marcelino, MLA for Logan – the first Filipino woman ever elected to public office in 2007; and Isha Khan, the Executive Director of the Manitoba Human Rights Commission.

They both spoke about women’s empowerment and the important role that women hold in our society. Tehani Jainarine, the Director of the Multiculturalism Secretariat within the Department of Multiculturalism and Literacy for the Province of Manitoba, also delivered a powerful message to the participants. The Filipino community’s Mabuhay Serenaders under the music direction of Pinays MB’s

Joy Lazo provided entertainment. The ladies of CMWI led the members in a Muslim Women’s community dance while the Filipino’s BIBAK cultural group also led the ladies in an Igorot community dance. Association of Ilocanos in Manitoba (AIM) 9th Anniversary and Christmas Party, November 18

The newly elected officers of Association of Ilocanos in Manitoba (AIM)

Knights of Columbus St. Edward’s Chapter Council #11005 25th Anniversary

The anniversary was held last October 14, 2017 at the Viscount Gort Hotel.

CRISTY...

Willie Revillame, Tony Tuviera, Mother Lily Monteverde, Bro. Mike Velarde, Atty.

Pareho naman silang libre, See CRISTY p19

Tila may kulang.

Bimby and his mom Kris Aquino si Kris Aquino.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept.

Good ang ika-1, 2, 9 at 10.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) M a r a m i kang dapat asikasuhin upang mapaghandaan ang darating na pangangailangan.

In short, nasermonan ako ni former Manila Cardinal, Jaime Sin (but that was another story).

senator.

– CSF

Jollibee pa more! The popular Filipino fast food chain, Jollibee, opened its second Canadian location on Tuesday, November 28. The new restaurant opened at the Northgate Mall on McPhillips St. in Winnipeg just shy of a year after its first Canadian location opened on Ellice Avenue, also in Winnipeg, in

December 2016. Just like the first time, eager Winnipeggers started to line up at 10:00 p.m. the night before the public opening just to be among the first customers. Fortunately, the overnight temperatures were not as brutal as last year. About 60 people packed into the restaurant at the 7:00

a.m. opening. Jollibee Canada’s vice-president, Beth dela Cruz, said she wasn’t expecting lineups for the second opening in Winnipeg. Jollibee’s third Canadian location will open in Toronto in the New Year, and more Winnipeg locations will open in the future, said dela Cruz.

In memoriam: the late Senator Tobias C. Enverga Jr. Senator Tobias C. Enverga Jr. was a tireless worker who brought passion, selflessness and energy to all he did, whether as a senator or advocate for the most vulnerable members of society, his Senate colleagues said. Known affectionately as “Jun,” Senator Enverga was the first Canadian of Filipino descent to be appointed to the Senate and was a proud voice for his community and others in the Greater Toronto Area. Senator Enverga died Thursday, November 16 while on a parliamentary trip to Colombia, with his wife Rosemer at his side. Born in the Philippines, the 61-year-old senator represented Ontario in the Senate since 2012. “Of his many contributions, Senator Enverga will be most remembered as a fierce advocate for persons with disabilities and a tireless champion for multiculturalism,” said Speaker of the Senate George J. Furey. “He was respected by all of his colleagues for his kindness, his warm sense of humour and his unparalleled work ethic. “In every aspect of his parliamentary work, Senator Enverga was not shy about sharing his deep love for Canada,” added the Speaker. “It has been a privilege to serve with him and I know he will be dearly missed by everyone in the Senate family.”

The Honourable Senator Tobias C. Enverga Jr. 1955 - 2017 Senator Enverga was the first Filipino-Canadian elected in the City of Toronto. He served as a Catholic school board trustee in Toronto and became known in the Toronto region for launching the Philippine-Canadian Charitable Foundation. Senator Enverga was the pride of the Canadian-Filipino community and although a proud Canadian, he kept close to his cultural roots. He was co-chair of the CanadaPhilippine Interparliamentary Group and inaugurated the annual Filipino Independence Day flag raising on Parliament Hill. During his years at the Senate, he was a member of several standing committees and participated in a variety

of important studies on issues ranging from First Nations northern housing to Maritime Search and Rescue operations. Additionally, he was an executive member of the ParlAmericas group and invested his energy in forging closer ties with parliamentarians from throughout Latin America and helping them to strengthen democracy and governance through political dialogue and parliamentary cooperation. “I always believe that multiculturalism is one of the greatest strengths of Canada,” said Senator Enverga in an interview with SenCAplus. “Being a Canadian of Filipino and Asian origin, I have that unique opportunity to represent a

The Honourable Senator and his family broader group of people, not just those in the Province of Ontario, but also members of the Filipino and Asian-Canadian communities all over Canada.” “The Senate has come to bolster representation of groups often underrepresented in Parliament, such as Aboriginal peoples, visible minorities and women. We, as visible minorities and Asian senators, have a responsibility and the ability to share and contribute our unique values, skills, and culture to complement and enhance various Senate roles and duties for the country as a whole.” Senator Enverga left three unfinished pieces of Senate business: A motion that senators sing O Canada each Tuesday —

matching a similar motion passed by the House of Commons in 1995. As well, he sponsored a bill, now in its third reading — Bill S-218 — that would designate every October Latin American Heritage Month. Finally, Senator Enverga had just introduced Bill S-242, which would provide a protection for Canadian consumers from deceptive marketing practices. While a proud Canadian, Senator Enverga championed aid efforts when the Philippines was hit by typhoons and helped many deserving, hard-working Filipinos to come to Canada and live the dream that he considered privileged to have lived himself.
