In the first days of his administration, U.S. President Donald Trump has already signed several executive orders including a directive to build his promised multi-billion dollar wall on the Mexican border and a travel ban, signed on Friday, January 27, that excludes people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted a message of comfort to refugees and immigrants affected on the following day: “To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada.”

The recent visit of Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe serves as a reminder that Davao City was known as “Davaokuo” (Little Tokyo) and even “Ko Nippon Koku” (Little Japan).

The ties that bind Japan and Davao City are deep, although not all of it is a pleasant memory.

At the turn of the 20th century, Japanese labourers who had worked on Kennon Road in Baguio came to Davao to work in the abaca plantations that American soldiers had been developing. Being diligent workers, the Japanese were soon growing abaca themselves, and they began to prosper and increase in number. By 1939 there were around 18,000 Japanese living in Davao, most of them in the Municipal District of Guianga covering Mintal and Calinan.

The increasing Japanese population soon became a cause for concern, and by the time of the Constitutional Convention of 1934, Davao delegate Pantaleon Pelayo Sr. was pointing out the growing control the Japanese had over Davao through their rapid acquisition of land. His warnings brought the matter to the consciousness of the entire country.

filed a bill creating the City of Davao from the Town of Davao and Guianga. Under the bill, the city would be led by officials appointed by the President, a step aimed at preventing Japanesebacked candidates from being elected into government posts.

Davao was inaugurated as a charter city on October 16, 1936

by President Manual L. Quezon.

As it turned out, some of the fears of the locals were well founded. Some of the Japanese in Davao City were actually acting as a fifth column, embedding themselves in the communities in order to make it easier for the Japanese armed forces to invade the country. There were accounts of seemingly gentle and harmless Japanese men turning out to be officers of the Japanese Imperial Army, their true identities revealed only when they donned their uniforms.

World War II was particularly brutal on Davao City, especially towards its end when Japanese forces decided to destroy as much of the city as they could before retreating inland in the face of advancing American forces. It is perhaps this brutal chapter that has prompted Japan to become particularly generous to Davao City when it comes to aid and other forms of assistance.

Grey skies and the link to mood Although the Prairie Provinces are known to have open and sunny skies, we also get our fair share of grey and dreary weather. For some newcomers, the novelty of seeing snow for the first time can quickly give way to shock when they experience their first season of fall and winter. It can be a huge adjustment, especially when you are used to warmer temperatures all year round.

Even native Canadians can be affected by seasonal changes and experience some level of depression, especially once the fall begins and the daylight hours gets shorter. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, some common symptoms of depression are: • Feelings of sadness and loss • Feelings of guilt and worthlessness • Feelings of extreme impatience, irritability, or a short temper • Loss of interest or pleasure in usually enjoyed activities • Changes in weight or appetite

The city is also pockmarked with caves and other chambers that were used for Japanese defense — and, some people say, to bury gold and other treasure. *** One of the highlights of Abe’s visit, at least for Davaoeños, was his visit to the home of President Rodrigo Duterte in Bangkal. That area is a middleclass community, and while it has gained popularity ever since Duterte became President, it has maintained its low-key status over the past months. The President’s home, in fact, has remained as it has always been: a typical middle-income home with none of the trappings that other politicians’ houses usually have. Inside one finds the usual clutter that any household has.

So when news came out that Duterte had actually invited Abe over for breakfast, Davaoeños wondered if the President would have his house cleaned up and

redecorated.

As it turned out, he didn’t.

Photos of the visit show the Duterte home as we had always known it. Davaoeños had a particularly good laugh at the photo of Abe inside Duterte’s bedroom, with the bed still having the famous kulambo (mosquito net) that the President cannot sleep without.

To my knowledge it was the first time a head of state invited another one inside his home and showed it to him as it was, with no pretension of being rich and opulent. It was both a show of humility and pride. At first I wasn’t sure how Abe reacted, but I learned from a source that the

Prime Minister actually found the experience charming. “It was love at first sight,” the source told me, adding that he hoped it would prompt other heads of state to follow suit. Imagine Presidents having breakfast not in hotels or mansions but in simple houses.

What a wonderful sight that would be.

The winds of change are blowing for the MPNP The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program is highly regarded within the local Filipino expatriate community. Who does not know someone who came to the province under the program?

Has the community grown because of the MPNP? Just look around Winnipeg and rural centres. All have experienced significant population growth because of the MPNP and most would agree it has added value to the Manitoba economy. But nothing lasts forever in the material world. I can hear the strains of Willie Nelson’s lyrics: The winds of change are always blowing And every time I tried to stay The winds of change continued blowing And they just carried me a way For “all the programs (the MPNP not the ‘girls’) I’ve loved before,” the winds are blowing, commencing with the premier’s announcement of a renewal strategy and the reaction from the official NDP opposition in the province. Which way are the winds blowing?

First, it is important to note some of the changes that have occurred over the last quarter of 2016 in terms of the MPNP. Consider the statistics published by the MPNP on program activity, specifically the Expression of Interest (EOI) selection and how it relates to overseas applicants, not those inside Manitoba on work permits.

• Under EPO draw 20 on August 24, 2016 – 638 overseas applications were drawn from the EOI inventory of profiles submitted online with the minimum score of 543 points; • Under EOI draw 21 on September 21, 2016 – only 40 overseas applicants were invited to apply with the minimum score rising to 620; • Under EOI draw 22 on October 28, 2016 – only 27 overseas applicants were invited to apply with the minimum score rising again to 712; • Under EOI draw 23 on November 29, 2016 – 29 overseas applicants were invited to apply with a minimum score of 713; and • Under EOI draw 23 on

December 30, 2016 – a new low of 20 overseas applicants were invited to apply with a minimum score rising to 787.

There is no question that change is occurring. The numbers are graphic and readily apparent to all.

On the one side the Leader of the Opposition, Flor Marcelino, has embarked upon a public awareness campaign to make Manitobans, especially in newcomer communities, aware of the changes that are coming and those that are here right now. She pointed out to Premier Pallister that over 150,000 newcomers had settled in Manitoba since 1999 and that growing population supports a growing provincial economy.

“Newcomers have a real-GDP impact of over $350 million per year.” She correctly pointed out the historically low unemployment numbers for the province and that the robust economy owes much to the MPNP. She asked that the same question that many others have asked: “Why are you trying to fix something that isn’t broken?”

MLA Flor Marcelino has

taken her opposition to change and defense of the existing MPNP program to the community. I encourage all interested parties to attend one of her rallies and find out firsthand what the opposition plans in terms of their response to the renewal plans announced by the premier.

Check the MPNP website for a generalized description of the premier’s plans for change. The details of which will be announced later in the spring. The PC government is embarking upon a program of stressing job creation in partnership with Manitoba business. We must wait to see more of what his “innovative partnerships” bring. We should know by April 2017 what the “renewed” MPNP looks like. The program is already changing, as evidenced by the numbers listed above. All interested parties are encouraged to keep up to date on not only the actual operation of MPNP, such as the invitations to apply for overseas applicants, but also to the public announcements on the MPNP website and also for the public forums hosted by Flor

Marcelino.

The winds of change are blowing and Manitobans can determine if these changes are positive or necessary. The NDP leader expresses her strong concern that the change may be reflective of any anti-immigration position on the part of the government. Her position has been clearly set forth and speaks from the experience of several terms in office as the steward of the MPNP. But we must be fair to the current PC government and wait for April 2017. The changes may be informed and beneficial to the provincial economy. Wait to see what the wind called “MPNP renewal” brings.

Celebrating the Chinese New Year So disgusted was a friend over the merrymaking one New Year’s day that she vowed to immigrate to a country where watusi did not mean firecrackers but an African tribe. She longed for a land where TNT is known not for explosions but as the product that funds the Nobel Prize. It has been a few weeks since we greeted the New Year with noise and black lungs, yet my friend is still in Manila.

If she insists on breaking another resolution, she will have another chance to do so when we celebrate Chinese New Year on January 26.

Frankly, the fireworks we have today pale in comparison with the ones described centuries ago by Spaniards and other Europeans in Manila. Made by the sangleyes (from the Chinese seng-li, meaning “to trade” or “travelling merchant”), these fireworks were so impressive they were believed to be near supernatural. Take the following description in 1790: “A lion spitting fire was followed by an enormous serpent, more than fifty cubits long, which made extraordinary movements and contortions on account of swallowing a globe of fire, which floated before it through the air; and behind the serpent came another lion, no less fierce than the first. This spectacle was made even more

terrible by the confused din of the gongs, which the Chinese beat without ceasing. The lions fought each other, with the greatest ardour and pertinacity; and the serpent performed many pleasing movements and evolutions, causing admiration of the skill with which so huge a mass moved about so swiftly. Finally, the two lions began to swell and brought about an abundance of fireworks; and it would be unjust to the Chinese if I did not state here that this display, though of short duration, was very handsomely designed. One of the lions being now set on fire, it began to run around through the plaza, with an incredible velocity, which spectacle brought pleasure to those present.”

Despite its resemblance to the dragon dance performed in Binondo, the subject of the account is not the Chinese New Year. Such marvellous show of Chinese pyrotechnics was only one of the events in the two- week fiesta that marked the accession to the throne of Carlos IV. Reading the above account makes me wonder why today’s fireworks are not visually elaborate anymore. Our fireworks seem to have deteriorated into mere noise- and-smoke makers.

Maybe the long ban on fireworks

had something to do with it.

Our National Archives has a bundle of crumbling documents marked Celebracion de fiestas of the Gremio de Sangleyes 1873-1889 that contain requests made for permits to celebrate the Chinese New Year. On February 6, 1882, for example, the Chinese gobernadorcillo sent a petition to the Corregidor of Manila stating that since the Chinese New Year would fall on the seventeenth of that month, they would therefore want to celebrate a ten-day fiesta, from the seventeenth to the twenty-seventh. The request goes on to enumerate other petitions. Could they light their homes, both inside and outside, for the duration of the festival?

Could they walk the streets freely and keep their stores open till midnight? Could they have music? Could they launch rockets, use bombs, reventadores and other firecrackers?

What amuses me is the fact that, with the possible exception of the Double Ten festival in October, the documents clearly illustrate the restrictions the

Chinese had to bear for the rest of the year, namely: racial segregation into ghettoes and restrictions on the movements through a curfew. It was funny that even the lighting of their homes was curtailed. On the whole, however, many of the Chinese requests were usually granted by the Spanish officials, except for the loosening of constraints on some types of fireworks.

Only rockets that gave out light, or luces, were allowed, and it was prohibited to use fireworks in public places. In 1880, a less lenient Spanish official banned fireworks for that year’s festival. If today we have many people injured by fireworks and inconsiderate firing of guns, just imagine the fires started by fireworks over a century ago when many houses were built of just wood and nipa.

Archival documents can show us the racial discrimination to which the Chinese were subjected in the Spanish Philippines, and further research will unearth the abuse they had to endure. The Chinese are more affluent now,

but unfortunately, the abuse continues – it has even developed into the new and despicable form of kidnapping for ransom.

Hoping that the fireworks and tikoy will bring in a better year, I say, Kung Hei Fat Choy!

Before the meeting, the Prime Minister also stopped in for a quick visit to the new Jollibee fast food outlet on Ellice Avenue, where he posed for photos with employees and patrons.

Kevin Lamoureux, MP for Winnipeg North, and his daughter Cindy Lamoureux, MLA for Burrows accompanied Trudeau for the day.

“When I was told that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was coming to Winnipeg to do a public town hall meeting I suggested that he check out one of Winnipeg’s newest restaurants and I explained that Jollibee was to the Philippines what McDonalds and KFC combined was to Canada. I don’t know how many people got “selfies” with Mr. Trudeau but it was a fantastic time and the PM’s visit made news not only in Canada but the Philippines too,” said Kevin Lamoureux.

French immersion school, that that program was a result of his father’s language policies.

Prime Minister Trudeau faced tougher questions at the public town hall meeting later that day at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre.

Small groups of protesters in the crowd of about 1,200 people displayed anti-pipeline signs and shouted “Keep it in the ground.”

Most in the crowd applauded the Prime Minister when he asked the protesters to let him speak.

What do you do when you have a clutter bug under your roof? How can you get a loved one to part with old, holey shirts and a baseball card or a craft collection that’s gone wild?

Maybe it’s the problem of storing a sofa in the garage for your nephew or a friend. Or, you have a kid that’s gone off to college (and graduated five years ago?) and so you’re the repository of all the said student’s stuff?

Here’s what I think about other people’s stuff – it’s really your stuff.

Clutter is about boundaries.

And if you have them (boundaries that is), other people’s clutter usually isn’t a big problem.

Being clear about what’s acceptable or what isn’t to you often solves the problem. It’s a lot like babies and bottles.

Lots of moms talk about not being able to get the baby off a bottle and on a sippy cup.

Here’s why: they expect the baby to make the decision, and that’s a mistake.

Once the mom is decisive and explains that the new cup is now the norm, the baby will go along. I know. This is how every transition my children ever made

occurred.

When I made the decision, they went along.

When we waffle, hope and pray they’ll accept the sippy cup, big bed from a crib, limits on TV or whatever, no decision is being made by them, or me, and they blissfully go on the way they want.

The other problem with other people’s clutter – it could be you.

Karen Kingston in her seminal book, Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui, writes that even a neatnik who has problems with a clutterbug is really only seeing a reflection of themselves.

Stay with me here.

When there is someone that’s cluttered and unclear in your home, it’s often a reflection of something cluttered in us – unresolved issues, upset emotions, unclear boundaries, muddled thinking, indecisiveness, etc.

A good example is the person who’s neat as a pin, but an emotional mess. Or, is always running with her hair on fire.

Clutter doesn’t have to be stuff – it can be emotions, stress, upset, time demands, or pure and simple overwhelm.

•Set limits on your time.

Don’t let others soak up every bit of your precious hours.

•Set boundaries, “I can no longer store your 800 CD music collection. Please move it out by the first of the month.”

•Resolve open issues. You can’t move forward when you’re moving in “in reverse.” Stuck in something that happened to you?

Get therapy or seek out help. Try both a physical and emotional clearing.

•Decide. Many times we put off decisions hoping they’ll be made for us. I can guarantee you that any decision made for you is never as satisfying as a decision made by you.

•Handle problems. We all have problems and difficulty.

What’s the ONE thing that’s

holding you back in your life?

Usually it’s just one thing (and it usually relates to a decision that needs to be made). Get it handled and it could energetically unblock your home.

•Clear your thinking. If you’re an emotional or stressed-out mess, try learning to meditate or doing yoga or tai chi. Find a way to make some mental clear space in your mind.

Once your inner world becomes uncluttered and clear, it’s amazing how our resident clutter bugs may spontaneously want to clear out, organize and get their belongings and neat and orderly as yours.

FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My second floor bedroom is over the kitchen on the first floor. Does that affect my feng shui?

Answer: When your bedroom is located over a bathroom or kitchen, it can harm your feng shui – and your health and wealth.

It’s important to notice where the sink and the stove are located and then determine if your bed is over either one.

If so, be sure to move your

bed to another position. When you are sleeping over a sink or a stove, you will be drained of your energy and health. Money will be difficult to come by and bills could overwhelm you. The best thing you can do is to relocate to another room and if this isn’t possible, move the bed to ensure you aren’t sleeping over the stove or sink.

#BellLetsTalk – mental health and our youth On January 25th, Bell Media hosted their annual “Let’s Talk” Day, which seeks to educate generations about mental illness, the stigma behind it, and ways to approach others with empathy.

For those who are not aware, a recent master class for the organization Dalagita focused on mental health advocacy in our community. We hosted two panellists, Mrs. Azel Navarro & Miss Loizza Aquino.

Mrs. Navarro, a retired clinical specialist at the Health Sciences Centre, spoke about the way in which stigma is rooted in the lack of education about the realities of mental illness. She compared it to having diabetes – it is silent, we do not physically see it, yet it affects so many in our community. People who live with diabetes need to have certain supports and self-regulation to live with their condition – much like those with mental illness. The key difference is that diabetes is more readily accepted while mental illness is swept under the rug.

Miss Aquino is a 12th grade student who began her own organization concerning mental

illness and mental health, called Peace of Mind 204, which now has the support of the provincial government. At her young age, she was able to take a stand and start a movement that matters, Youth Against Mental Illness Stigma (YAMIS) – something that all the contestants of Dalagita take seriously. She noticed a need for this cause, and so she championed it. She says that, as the Bell campaign suggests, the simplest step we can take to make a difference for our community regarding mental health is – to simply talk.

Have that conversation that matters, reach out to individuals, and let them know they don’t need to bottle up the pressures they are feeling. Take a moment to educate yourselves, and educate your family about mental health, mindfulness, and mental illness. Together, we can fight the stigma against it.

Mexico is not just a town in Pampanga When we think of the Spanish influences on Filipino culture and language, we naturally think that these things came directly from Spain. That’s understandable considering that the Philippine Islands were named after a king of Spain and that we still tend to call all Spanish-speaking people and their language, Kastila, even if they are not from the Castile region of Spain. But the Philippines were not the only lands that Spain conquered in the 1500s. They were the empire’s most distant possessions and although Spain kept them isolated from their closest neighbours, Filipinos had some contact with fellow subjects on the other side of the world.

Many elements in Filipino culture that we think are Spanish really came from the native inhabitants of Central America.

Common words like palengke, tiyangge (markets) and even nanay (mother) and tatay (father) may sound Spanish but they are actually from the Nahuatl language of the Aztec people.

The Mexican connection So what was the Philippines’ connection to Latin America?

When Magellan “discovered” the Philippines he was really looking for the Spice Islands, which are known today as the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. Back then, spices were not just for improving the taste of bland food; they were highly valued as preservatives and medicines and they were extremely expensive. Portugal eventually won the Spice Islands and blocked Spain’s access to Asia from the west. However, Spain still had the Philippines, which they hoped would become a literal gold mine. As it turned out, the Philippines never produced enough gold, silver, or even taxes to support an empire, but one of the valuable things that the colony did have was its location on the eastern edge of Asia. Spain couldn’t possess the Asian markets but it could buy and trade for all the goods it wanted with the silver it was looting from the Americas. This was the connection to Mexico.

The galleon trade Manila became the central depot for all of Spain’s commercial activities in Asia.

From 1565 until 1811, large cargo ships called galleons travelled between Manila and

Acapulco, Mexico. Most years one or two separate galleons from Acapulco would carry large amounts of Mexican and Bolivian silver to Manila to pay for all the exotic goods that would be brought to Manila from throughout Southeast Asia and especially China. The silver also helped to pay for the operation of the colony.

A galleon would also sail from Manila to Acapulco once or twice a year loaded with all the highly desirable Asian goods that would then be transferred across Mexico to the port of Vera Cruz where they were loaded onto ships of the Spanish treasure fleet and carried off to Spain. The War of Independence in Latin America ended the galleon trade in 1811 but by that time Portugal was no longer blocking the more direct eastward route from Spain to the Philippines.

Mexican culture in the Philippines Spain governed the Philippine colony through Mexico. Many Spaniards in the government, the military, the Church and merchants were either born in Mexico or had lived there for a few years before coming to the Philippines. These colonial Spaniards, along with Mexican mestizos, brought with them Mexican influences that can still be seen in the Philippines.

One notable link to Mexico is the basic monetary unit of the Philippines. Spain’s currency was the peseta before the euro replaced it in 2002, but the Philippines share the peso with Mexico and several other Latin American countries.

Some may think that the town of Mexico in Pampanga is the most obvious evidence of Mexicans in the Philippines but that may just be a historical coincidence. The town was originally called Masicu, possibly from the word for elbow, which referred to a bend in the nearby Pampanga River. During the colonial era, Spaniards changed the name, either intentionally or by accident, to the similar sounding and more familiar, Mexico, which is a Nahuatl word.

Along with loads of silver, the galleons also brought supplies from America, such as horses, books and new kinds of plants and foods. Fruits and

vegetables are probably the largest contributors of Latin American words to the Filipino vocabulary. It is estimated that there are about 250 Nahuatl words in the Filipino language.

Some Latin American foods became so popular that their Nahuatl names have entered languages around the world – xocolatl (chocolate), xitomatl (tomato), potatl (potato), ahuacamolli (guacamole) and mizquitl (mesquite). Even the name of the popular American chewing gum, Chiclets, is rooted in the Nahuatl word tzictli, which means “sticky.” And of course, corn or mais and tobacco were originally grown in the Americas. Their names can be traced back to the Arawak people of the Caribbean. Other fruits and vegetables such as the pineapple, the peanut, papaya, lima beans, cassava, chico/ zapote and balimbing came from Central and South America, too.

Many traditional Filipino melodies and dances such as La Paloma and Sandunga Mia also originated in Mexico.

Filipino culture in Mexico The cultural exchange was

not a one-way street. Filipino sailors served on the galleons and labourers were transported to work in Mexico. To this day, unconfirmed stories persist about families in Mexico, known as Chinos, who descended from Filipinos.

Apart from the passengers and crew, most of the galleons themselves were built in the Philippines using local hardwoods.

Filipino mestizo merchants travelled on the ships, bringing with them bits of Filipino culture that are now a part of Mexican culture. Mango seedlings were brought to Mexico in 1779 and were later crossed with other varieties of mango to produce the so-called Manila mango, which is now the favourite variety in Mexico. In 2005 the Philippine government protested Mexico’s plans to patent the name as their own.

Filipino workers who were brought to Mexico to cultivate sugar cane and rice brought with them the popular palm wine called tuba, which is still sold along the streets and in markets of Mexico.

Even the traditional Filipino shirt, the Barong Tagalog has its counterpart in the Guayabera or Yucatan shirt of Mexico and Cuba, though where it originated is a matter of some debate. All three countries claim to have invented the design, which just further demonstrates the intertwined history of the Philippines and Latin America.

Pia crowns new Miss Universe Former Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach of the Philippines crowned Miss France, Iris Mittenaere, as the new Miss Universe at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila on Sunday, January 29.

(Monday in the Philippines.)

Mittenaere, a 24-year-old dental surgery student from Lille in Northern France, was chosen over 12 other finalists in this year’s pageant. As Miss Universe, she will be campaigning for dental and oral care around the world.

“This sash is not only a sash.

This is something to help people, to understand people,” said Mittenaere in an interview after the pageant.

First and second runners-up were Miss Haiti, Raquel Pelissier,

and Miss Colombia, Andrea Tovar. The other top finalists are from Kenya, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Panama, Colombia, the Philippines, Canada, Brazil, France, Haiti, Thailand and the U.S. Miss Canada, Siera Bearchell, who placed in the Top Nine, made headlines for taking on trolls who criticized her for her size, while Miss Philippines Maxine Medina, who made it into the Top Six, was criticized in her home country for her poor English.

During the show, host Steve Harvey joked that he got the winner right this year, after mixing up the names of the winners last year. Among the entertainers this year were Rapper Flo Rida and R&B group Boys II Men.

Mayroong tropa ng: “Make America Great Again” at mayroong ding naniniwala na ang tunay na mensahe daw nito ay: “Make America Hate Again.”

Umisip sana ang gobyerno ng mga pinakamahusay na tugon sa mga challenges na ito.

Abangan natin ang husay ng mga Canucks na masolusyunan ang mga anticipated na economic difficulties dahil sa panggugulang at pagkakaroon ng makasariling polisiya ni Mang Donald.

Napakabusy ng karamihan sa atin dito sa Canada dahil sa trabaho, gawaing bahay at kung anu-ano pa. At kung nais nating ipahayag ang pag-ibig natin sa ating mga mahal sa buhay, kailangan maglaan tayo ng panahon sa kanila. alaga. Ang pagiging pisikal ay hindi nangangahulugan palagi ng sex. Malaking ginhawa ang maibibigay ng isang simpleng yakap sa inyong mahal sa buhay lalo na kung siya’y nalulungkot.

Ang pag-akbay mo sa iyong misis sa mall ay maaaring magpahayag sa kaniya na pinagmamalaki mo pa rin siya bilang asawa.

Toni Gonzaga and baby Seve MANILA — For TV hostactress Toni Gonzaga, being a mother is one of the most difficult roles she has ever played. It’s a

real-life drama that can only be appreciated through experience.

Gonzaga gave birth to baby Seve in September 2016. She had

“a hard time pushing the baby out” due to labor contractions, Gonzaga’s mother, Pinty, said.

Apart from the pain of giving

birth, Gonzaga said she’s had to deal with being sleep deprived and feeling restless.

“Dati sasandal lang ako, tulog na ako. Ngayon hindi na, ‘yong tulog ko feeling ko parang pumikit lang ako. Wala na akong deep sleep ever since I gave birth,” she said.

Gonzaga’s baby, who is now four months old, solely depends on breast milk, which can be tricky for Gonzaga during out-oftown tapings and trips.

Gonzaga said she has to spend two to three hours pumping milk before she leaves the house. Thus, she could not wait for the baby to turn six months old so she can finally introduce solid food.

But all these challenges are totally worth it, said Gonzaga, who believes the joys outweighs

the hardships.

Being a mother has given her a deeper appreciation for womanhood.

“Ngayon na-realize ko how strong women are — to carry a life and to give birth to a life and to take care of it, nurture, and nourish it,” she said. “I now have so much love and respect for every woman who gave birth kasi iba pala talaga ‘yong pinagdadaanan ng isang babae.”

More than that, it also redefined her meaning of life and love.

“Hindi ko dati naiintindihan ‘yong mga salitang: ‘You gave meaning to my life,’ ‘I’d die for you.’ Hindi ko naiintindihan ‘yong mga ganyang klaseng pagmamahal. But now I know,” she said. (ABS-CBN News)

John Lloyd Cruz admits mom pressuring him to have a baby MANILA — In the sitcom Home Sweetie Home, John Lloyd Cruz plays a husband and a father. In real life, he remains one of show business’ most eligible bachelors.

That’s why during the press conference on Jan. 31, marking the third anniversary of the show, the 33-year-old actor was asked about his plans to find a partner, settle down, and eventually have children.

“Siyempre, sana dahil hindi na rin tayo bumabata,” he said.

“And siyempre on a regular basis napagmamasdan mo ang buhay ng kagaya ni Toni Gonzaga, kaya napaka-imposible na hindi ka mapa-isip at mainggit paminsanminsan.”

Gonzaga is Cruz’s leading lady on Home Sweetie Home.

She is married to filmmaker Paul Soriano. They have a 4-monthold son, Seve.

According to Cruz, at his age, this is not the first time he hears these types of questions. And even his mom is pressuring him to have a baby — whether he gets married or not.

“Medyo may kaunting pressure, especially kung ‘yong nanay mo nagpaparinig na sayo.

Siyempre medyo tumatanda na rin ‘yong nanay ko, and sigurado ako gusto niyang magkaroon ng apo galing sa akin,” Cruz said.

“Umabot na rin sa punto na sinabihan na niya ako na kahit huwag ka na lang mag-asawa

Despite that, Cruz said he would like to stick to his ideals.

He remains hopeful that he can find the right partner, with whom he’d have kids.

“Kahit ganito ako, medyo may pagka-ideal pa rin ako.

Sana magkaroon ng partner, maging asawa, at magkaroon ng pamilya,” he said.

But for now, he said he is more concerned about fulfilling his advocacy. One such goal is to take part in making quality films that will bring honour to the country.
