Canada is regarded as one of the best countries in the world, second only to Switzerland, according to the 2018 Best Countries report, a rankings and analysis project of U.S. News & World Report, marketing company Y&R, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel are viewed as the most respected world leaders, while US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are the least respected.
The annual report, now in its third year, is based on data compiled in Y&R’s Brand Asset Valuator, a global database of consumer perceptions of brands. The data is gathered from a survey of more than 21,000 business leaders, informed elites and general citizens. The rankings evaluate 80 countries across a range of criteria, from economic influence and power to citizenship and quality of life, to interpret how nations are perceived on a global scale. It is the third year in a row that Canada received second place. Countries with progressive
social and environmental policies, such as Switzerland and Canada, dominate the overall rankings. Nordic nations, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway rank in the top 15. Denmark is the top country for raising children and for women. Sweden is No. 1 for green living, and Norway ranks at the top for citizenship. “For the third year in a row, Canada is seen as offering the best quality of life, driven by high ratings for education, health care and public safety,” US Report’s Kevin Drew said in a release. Bell Let’s Talk is a Canadian campaign that began in September of 2010 to openly discuss mental health. This initiative aims to break down the stigma attached to mental illness by promoting awareness and understanding. It also supports organizations and services that help Canadians with mental health issues, as well as research programs. Bell Let’s Talk is also committed to promoting mental health within the workplace. On January 31, we celebrated Bell Let’s Talk Day. To continue this very important conversation, let’s talk about anxiety. The Canadian Mental Health Association states that anxiety disorders affect 5 per cent of the household population, causing mild to severe impairment. Anxiety affects people in different ways as illustrated in the following examples: Alex, 17 years old, had to give a presentation at school the next day. He felt sick to his stomach at the mere thought of having to stand at the front of his class and talk. That night, he had trouble falling asleep and woke up several times. Marilyn, 63 years old, had been sitting in her car for 20 minutes, trying to find the courage to go into the restaurant. Her friend’s son was celebrating his seventh birthday and she knew she couldn’t miss it, but she felt highly anxious about being around so many people. Her palms were sweaty, her heart was beating fast and she felt lightheaded. Jeff is 24 years old and often has worries about the opinions of his family, in particular how his mother views him. He is concerned about choosing a career that will make his family happy. He describes himself as a people-pleaser, but feels that people often take advantage of him. His thoughts are affecting
CANADA... From page 1 “Canadians pride themselves in encouraging all of their citizens to honour their own cultures,” reads the description on Y&R’s website. “Canada’s expansive wilderness to the north plays a large role in Canadian identity, as does the country’s reputation of welcoming immigrants.” However, it also lists challenges like the concerns of Indigenous people and French-speakers. The United States dropped one spot down to No. 8. his sleep and he occasionally wakes up feeling “on edge,” irritated, and his muscles are tense. These scenarios describe how some people might feel anxiety. Different people experience anxiety in different ways. Some may use words such as “nervousness,” “fear,” “stress,” “panic,” “freaking out,” or “butterflies.” But overall, anxiety is characterized by having an overwhelming sense of worry or thoughts that cause distress and interfere with your ability to function at home, work, or in the community. Anxiety can affect our relationships with others too. Symptoms of anxiety can include: • negative thinking • excessive worry • confusion • trembling • fatigue • feeling faint or dizzy • irritability • restlessness • difficulty breathing • rapid heartbeat • upset stomach or nausea • difficulty concentrating • muscle tension • insomnia Everyone experiences anxiety to some level, and there is no single cause for anxiety. Usually, a number of factors will contribute to how you experience anxiety such as genetics, your brain chemistry, and life situations. You are not able to control these factors. However, what we do have power over is how we look at and interpret the things that we experience. Core beliefs about ourselves, thinking style, and behaviours are factors that we can change. We can work to improve low self-esteem, try to change our negative thoughts, and adopt behaviours that will decrease our anxiety and stress. If you think that anxiety has a place in your life, try some of

Breaking down the stigma around anxiety the following effective anxietyreducing strategies: Think positively – As much as possible, try to look at the bright side. For instance, after a difficult workday, do not focus on all the things you didn’t do. Instead, make a mental list of all the things you did accomplish, and how well you did them. Evaluate the benefits of worrying – If it is a situation that we have little or no control over, there is not much we can do. Sometimes we worry so that we feel we are doing something to control the situation. But often, this only results in feelings of hopelessness. Examine your thought processes – Do you only see the worst possible outcome? Do you make broad interpretations from a single or a few events? For example, after feeling awkward at a job interview, do you think, “I am always so awkward”? Try to stay away from thoughts using the words, always, never and every. For example, “I never do a good job at work.” Be careful not to jump to conclusions or assume what others are thinking. For example, “My friend can’t go out for coffee tonight. She must not like me anymore.” Don’t try to be perfect – We often feel more anxiety when we want to be absolutely perfect at something. However, complete perfection is impossible for anyone to achieve. The end result is that you feel more worry and hopelessness because you will continually fall short of your goals. In fact, perfectionists tend to accomplish less because they spend a lot of time correcting and going over things again and again, trying to achieve an impossible standard. Meanwhile, a non-perfectionist could have accomplished twice as much work that is at an acceptable standard.

Talk about it – With any form of negative stress, it is always best to let out heavy feelings, rather than keeping them to yourself. Talking to a family member, friend, counsellor, teacher, doctor or spiritual leader will help you to feel better. Find peace – The behaviours and activities that you choose can be a powerful outlet for stress and worry. Some people find that journaling is a great way to sort out their thoughts and let go of anxiety. Playing a musical instrument or singing can serve as a creative outlet for stress. Stretching is one of the easiest anxiety-reducing techniques because you can do this anywhere. If you find that you are feeling upset or tense, take a stretch break to find immediate relief. Yoga is an activity that combines stretching, breathing exercises and meditation, which can result in inner peace. When in doubt, turn to the Internet or YouTube to find a variety of information and videos on relaxation, deep breathing, and mindfulness. Mindfulness focuses on the present moment, which can relieve anxiety because we are often worrying about what happened in the past and what will happen in the future. Being mindful means accepting what is happening in the present moment, and not being judgmental. It is important to manage anxiety before it happens, not just when we experience it. This decreases the chances of having emotional and physical problems down the road. Also, there is nothing wrong with seeking professional help from a health professional. It can be helpful to talk to someone who is respectful and nonjudgmental. Cheryl Dizon-Reynante is a licensed therapist with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

From Marcos to Duterte: How media was attacked, threatened by Jodesz Gavilan MANILA – More than three decades after Filipinos reinstated democracy, press freedom is once again under siege in the Philippines. On Monday, January 15, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revoked the registration of Rappler for allegedly violating the Constitution and the AntiDummy Law – a move seen as nothing short of harassment aimed at stifling media in the country. Seen as an extension of various threats by President Rodrigo Duterte against media organizations, this action by the administration will surely just be the beginning. It is also one of the worst moves against the media since the declaration of martial law by the dictator Ferdinand Marcos. But what did each administration do that threatened press freedom? Marcos administration 1965 – 1986 Press freedom was one of the main victims when the Philippines was placed under Martial Law by then president Ferdinand Marcos in September 1972. The dictator, fearing the power of the media, made sure that his dictatorial government had full control over all news agencies. After signing Proclamation No. 1081, Marcos released Letter of Instruction No. 1, which ordered the “takeover and control” of all newspapers, magazines, and radio and television facilities. Among media outlets in the country affected were the Manila Daily Bulletin, ABS-CBN, the Manila Times, Philippine Free Press, Philippine Graphic, and the Daily Mirror, among others. Marcos justified the order by saying that it was meant to “prevent the use of privately-owned newspapers, magazines, radio and television facilities, and all other media of communications for propaganda purposes against the government.” Aside from this, through his various Presidential Decrees, he penalized the printing of materials that “can undermine integrity of the government” and cancelled franchises and permits of media facilities. Information relayed to the public was highly censored and subject to approval by a government body. Those who refused to go through the process – or were deemed to have published or written materials subversive to the government – were arrested and denied due process. Corazon Aquino administration 1986 – 1992 The People Power
Revolution of 1986 toppled the Marcos dictatorship and made Corazon Aquino – the widow of opposition figure Benigno Aquino Jr. – president. Under her administration, jumpstarted by the formulation of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, the freedoms previously taken away by Marcos were reinstated. But the years after the reinstatement of democracy were marred by plots to overthrow the Aquino administration. These actions were spearheaded by members of the military. The way the government handled these attempts were also heavily criticized. According to the Reporters Without Borders, in dealing with the media, Aquino was “uncomfortable with it but managed to deal with it, conscious of the vital role of media in a democracy.” She, however, filed a libel case against journalist Luis Beltran over his column that said Aquino hid under the bed during one mutiny in August 1987. The National Telecommunications Council, in 1989, also ordered the closure of two radio stations for airing “rebel propaganda” but the orders were eventually lifted the same month. At least 21 journalists were killed under her administration, according to data from the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR). Ramos administration 1992 – 1998 Reporters Without Borders also said that the administration of Fidel V. Ramos recognized the role of the media in pursuing and upholding democracy. However, CMFR monitoring showed that at least 11 members of the media were killed under the Ramos administration. Estrada administration 1998 – 2001 While Aquino and Ramos had amicable relations with the media, Reporters Without Borders described Joseph Ejercito Estrada as “less tolerant.” He, after all, used his influence to put pressure on several media outlets deemed critical of him and his administration. In 1999, the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) saw itself at the receiving end of pressure when Estrada openly criticized it for alleged bias. Advertisers, prompted by the President, withdrew from the country’s largest broadsheet. In a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the Inquirer told the media watchdog that three government-run corporations, also withdrew their advertising. More than a decade later, in 2011, Estrada apologized to the newspaper. While the Inquirer “survived” the ad boycott, things were much
worse for the Manila Times, which was hit by Estrada over a story that described him as an “unwitting ninong (godfather)” to a government contract. The story, written by business reporter Joel Gaborni, was published on February 16, 1999. Less than a month after, on March 9, Estrada filed a P100-million libel suit against the newspaper claiming that it was an attack against “reputation, honour, and dignity” and “honesty and integrity as a public official.” Under pressure from the former president, on April 8, the Gokongwei family, then owners of The Manila Times, ran a frontpage apology to Estrada. That apology triggered the resignation of senior editors and writers and sparked media debate on press freedom. Estrada withdrew the libel charge against the newspaper yet continued government pressure on the Gokongweis. The family eventually sold the newspaper to Katrina Legarda and Reghis Romero, who only served as a front for Estrada crony Mark Jimenez. On July 23, 1999, The Manila Times printed its last issue under the Gokongwei family. The new owners resumed operations a few months after. Today, the newspaper is owned by former Arroyo publicist Dante Ang, who is President Duterte’s special envoy for international public relations. At least six media people were killed during the short-lived Estrada administration, CMFR data shows. Arroyo administration 2001 – 2010 The administration of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was marred by libel suits, a raid, and the single deadliest attack against the media. Meanwhile, then first gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo actively filed libel suits against the press over articles linking him to alleged wrongdoing. He filed a total of 50 cases against 46 journalists, according to the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism. In fact, in November 2006, then Malacañang reporter (and now Rappler editor) Mia Gonzales was nearly arrested while inside the Palace grounds in relation to a libel case filed by Arroyo against her over a 2004 Newsbreak report. Not taking the threats sitting down, journalists – from Newsbreak, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Malaya, and the Daily Tribune – filed a class civil suit amounting to P12.5 million against Arroyo. The libel cases, they said, created a “chilling effect” on the Philippine press. The move by the presidential spouse who had been in the middle of controversies relating

FEBRUARY 1 - 15, 2018 to corruption and use of influence was condemned by local and international rights groups. In 2007, Arroyo dropped all libel cases. The Daily Tribune was also subjected to harassment when in February 2006, the police raided its office after alleging that it was a “possible source of destabilization materials.” The Supreme Court, in May 2006, declared the raid “plain censorship.” The end of 2009 was a terrible year for press freedom when the single deadliest attack against the media happened when 32 journalists among the 58 killed in a massacre in Ampatuan, Maguindanao province. They were attacked, brutally killed, and buried using a governmentowned backhoe. The powerful Ampatuan clan – ally of the Arroyo administration – was believed to have plotted the massacre to derail the candidacy of political rival Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu in the 2010 gubernatorial elections. More than eight years later, none of the 188 accused have been convicted. Many groups refer to the Arroyo administration as the period when media killings peaked post-Marcos. Data from CMFR shows that 83 media workers were killed from 2001 to 2010. Benigno Aquino III administration 2010 – 2016 While there was no concrete policy or action against the media, then president Benigno Aquino III was known for his constant appeals to the press for “balanced” reporting. In an exclusive interview with Rappler in July 2017, Aquino said that he wanted to control the media “in all honesty” but instead of a clampdown, his administration instead repeatedly “appealed” for fairer media coverage. His appeals, he said, led to nothing. The problem, however, lies in the huge number of journalists killed under his administration. At least 31 members of the press were killed during the Aquino presidency – second to Arroyo in terms of magnitude post-Marcos – according to data from the CMFR. Duterte administration 2016 – present Even before President Duterte took his oath of office in 2016, he was known to have a “colourful” relationship with the media. In a press conference in May 2016, he said that journalists are legitimate targets of assassination, “if you’re a son of a bitch.” “Just because you’re a journalist you are not exempted from assassination, if you’re a son of a bitch,” Duterte said when asked how he would address the problem of media killings in the Philippines. That was just the start of his tirades against the media. Barely two years into his presidency, Duterte and his government have continuously threatened, harassed, and made antagonists out of several media outlets. In March 2017, Duterte called
PILIPINO EXPRESS certain media entities “bastos” (rude) for writing supposedly unfair news about him and his administration. In a thinly veiled threat, the President said that karma is sure to catch up with newspaper Philippine Daily Inquirer and television network ABS-CBN and their owners, the Prietos and Lopezes, respectively. These threats continued in the next months. In April 2017, Duterte said that he wants to block the renewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise, further accusing the network of “swindling” after it did not show his already paid political ads during the 2016 campaign season. In July 2017, Duterte turned his ire on the Inquirer and threatened to do an “exposé” against the country’s largest broadsheet. He accused the owners of not paying the correct taxes for their Mile Long property. He also tried to link an ex-official with a huge salary to the Inquirer. The same month, after being at the receiving end of threats, the Prieto family announced it was in talks with Ramon Ang, head of San Miguel Corporation, for the sale of its majority stake in the Inquirer. Ang was also described by Duterte as his friend. The move, according to the family, was a “strategic decision” but insiders said it was due to continued harassment and pressure. During his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) in July 2017, Duterte claimed that social news site Rappler is “fully owned” by Americans, warning the company that this violates the 1987 Constitution. This claim reflects the disinformation directed by proDuterte bloggers and various allies of the administration against Rappler even during the election period. The news outlet has consistently debunked this claim. Almost six months after, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revoked Rappler’s registration for allegedly violating the Constitution and the AntiDummy Law. This move is nothing short of harassment aimed at stifling press freedom in the Philippines. On December 14, 2016, the Office of the Solicitor General wrote the SEC, asking it to investigate Rappler over its Philippine Depositary Receipts (PDRs). Rappler, however, assured its readers that it would continue to operate as it files the necessary motions for reconsideration with the courts. Several organizations – both local and international – have called out this action as an act against press freedom. Meanwhile, according to data from the CMFR, four journalists have been killed so far under the Duterte administration. This is only a part of a huge culture of impunity dominating the Philippines. – Rappler.com Images from the Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines and Wikipedia

MPNP draw #39 released The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) is currently completing a process of renewal that started in late 2017. At this time the provincial program remains closed to the submission of new online Expression of Interest (EOI) profiles. But things are happening. The MPNP continues to invite new skilled worker applicants from the existing EOI inventory. Check out the announcement on the provincial web site regarding draw #39 with numbers and warnings. On January 12, 2018, the MPNP announced the results of draw #39. The recent draw of interested skilled foreign workers both abroad and inside Manitoba reported numbers in three different categories: • Skilled Workers in Manitoba, • Skilled Worker Overseas and the • Skilled Worker Overseas –
Express Entry Sub-stream. The first category, which was the major source of invitations through 2017, reported the issuance of 119 letters of advice to apply with the lowest ranking candidate score of 520. This number far exceeded the numbers of letters of advice to Skilled Workers Overseas, which was only 17. All 17 were actually invited under a Strategic Recruitment Initiative, with the lowest-ranked candidate’s score set at 815. The Skilled Worker Overseas Express Entry Sub-Stream is also described in the renewed MPNP and announcement in CIC News as the “Manitoba Express Entry Pathway.” It is one of the two planned streams for Skilled Worker Overseas applicants along with the Human Capital Pathway. Draw #39 reports that 155 letters of advice to apply were issued to
candidates from the existing EOI profile to persons with a valid Express Entry ID, job seeker validation code, and at least six months of recent experience in an occupation on the Manitoba In-Demand Occupation list. The lowest-ranked candidate invited had 565. Candidates from the sub-stream who do not have these requirements and verifiable experience in the demand occupation will be refused. The provincial website warns potential applicants that even though they may score higher than the lowest ranking candidates, it does not guarantee that they will be issued a Letter of Advice to Apply. Applicants may have been passed over because they said they had taken an approved third-party language test for English or French language proficiency but failed to provide a valid test number in their EOI, or their
language test is no longer valid. If a person says they received an Invitation to Apply to the MPNP under a strategic initiative, they must provide a valid Invitation Letter. If either of these scenarios applies to you, the MPNP advises you to update your EOI with the correct information in order to be considered for the next draw. Candidates who indicated that they are working in a regulated occupation and are fully licensed in Manitoba must provide proof of having completed licensing steps to be employed in Manitoba. It is wrong to make declarations that are clearly not correct. If this applies to you, the MPNP warns, “you may wish to consider declining your Letter of Advice to Apply.” It is important to be aware of the changes in the MPNP recruitment of both skilled foreign workers and also investors.
This should be an exciting year for all applicants who want to immigrate to Manitoba. It is starting slowly but should pick up activity once the online EOI system reopens and invitations start in earnest for applicants from both inside Manitoba and overseas. It is important that you check the provincial website and become familiar with the selection process, especially the In-Demand Occupation List. Good luck in your application submissions. Our unwritten future It looks like the world is one step closer to its demise. I suggest you pack up the family and head to a bunker in the mountains because we only have a couple of minutes. But before you do, perhaps finish this edition of the Pilipino Express. Recently, scientists moved the “Doomsday Clock” to two minutes to midnight, the closest it has been since 1953. According to Wikipedia, the Doomsday Clock is a symbol that represents the likelihood of a man-made global catastrophe. The clock is managed by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Science and Security Board. The clock typically represents the threat of global nuclear war. However, a few years ago, climate change, life sciences and technology were also taken into consideration as they too could cause irreparable harm to planet earth. So what happens at the hypothetical midnight? Nuclear war? Fire falling from above?
According to many chats online, it could very well be. And mayhem ensues. Yet, when I look around, there are no cars piled to the brim with the basic necessities heading for safety outside of metropolitan cities. Why do you think that is? Are we choosing to ignore the signs? I’m asking a lot of questions, and no, you don’t have to answer. But these have been running through my head recently. Is it because I am finally feeling mortal after hitting 40? Damn, another wrinkle. It wasn’t until recently that I started to think of a Plan B. What would I actually do in the event of a global emergency? The very nicely tanned folks of Hawaii were tested just last month. Imagine walking up to an alert on your phone that said, “BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.” That’s what it said, in
full caps. What would you have done? I would have quickly changed my shorts. Once that task was complete, I would have gathered up the family and got somewhere safe. Wherever that may be. I can’t imagine the fear experienced by the people of Hawaii, or of those who know people in Hawaii. It must have been scary to feel that helpless. As you all know, it was deemed a mistake. How do you say, “job opening?” What made this emergency alert all the more realistic during those panic-filled 40 minutes was that the fear of a legitimate attack from North Korea has been present these past few months. I took a moment to read the stories people shared in the aftermath. I was surprised to read that not everyone packed up and headed for safety. Some sent cryptic text messages to their loved ones, with one line saying, “I love you.” There was a couple who read the alert, and went back to bed and held each other. There was another person who went to the kitchen and made their “last good cup of coffee.” It was interesting to read peoples’ different reactions in a very scary
time. While it was a false alarm, it is a reminder that it could very well be our reality. I have a theory. I believe there was a perceived threat and the alert wasn’t an accident. Before you call me a conspiracy theorist, I did read that they didn’t have the capability of sending another alert saying it was a false alarm. I specialize in crisis communications. We train and prepare for the worst. Not for one second do I believe there was one red button that gets pushed “by accident.” There are procedures in place to get to that point. Plus,
it doesn’t take that long to realize you’ve accidentally hit the panic button. However, it does take some time to assess the situation in the event of a real threat, which fits with the timeline of events. That sounds more plausible to me. But I digress; I don’t think we’ll ever know what truly happened that morning. Coincidentally, this happened at the same time my wife and I were planning a trip to Hawaii. Go figure. The artists of impersonation You’ve probably heard the phrase “ang galing manggaya ng Pinoy!” (Pinoys have a knack for imitation!) You can take that however you like, but I’d like to take it as a compliment. Impersonation is a gift, like any other talent – a gift that gives happiness, awareness, as well as inspiration to others. Let’s get to know a few impersonators. Eddie Mesa Dubbed “Elvis Presley of the Philippines,” Eduardo de Mesa Eigenmann or Eddie Mesa is a retired Filipino actor and singer. He was given the nickname during his time as an impersonator of Elvis. He has acted in movies with Susan Roces and the late Fernando Poe Jr. Today he lives with his wife in the United States, where he has become a pastor. He is the father of Michael de Mesa, Mark Gil, Cherie Gil and grandfather of Andi Eigenmann. Willie Nep Probably the most versatile Pinoy impersonator, Willie Nepomuceno always wanted to be a singer and an actor. He is known as the Philippines’ master impersonator. Among the Filipino personalities he impersonates are the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, Joseph Estrada, Fidel V. Ramos, Dolphy, Gringo Honasan, Ping Lacson, German Moreno, Nur Misuari, and Fernando Poe Jr. On the international front, he usually impersonates Stevie Wonder, Paul Anka, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Elvis Presley, Bruce Lee, and many others. The Experience Review Committee (ERC) is entrusted by the association to ensure that all members-in-training (MITs) gain certain competencies prior to registration. ERC’s apparent duty is to review this work experience diligently. However, another important aspect of this committee is to make sure that its review process keeps pace with the ever-changing needs of

our profession and membership. As the former Chair of the ERC, Jitendra Paliwal will shed light on the review process currently followed by the committee and how this process has evolved to keep up with the changing times. Dr. Jitendra Paliwal is a professional engineer, academic, engineering consultant and motivational speaker. He is a Professor of Biosystems Engineering at the University of Manitoba where he is also currently serving as the Associate Dean (Graduate Program) in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. Triggers for mental health concerns A moderate amount of stress at work may be beneficial. It may even improve our efficiency and mental sharpness. However, when a person’s motivation has been diminished by constant imbalance brought by triggers in the workplace, mental health may be impacted. It is therefore very important to understand what these triggers are by increasing our awareness. Organizational changes A company going through significant organizational changes can impact an employee’s job satisfaction. If a person is unhappy regarding the changes to their job, getting to work may feel like an overwhelming task. A new survey conducted by Morneau Shepell, an HR Consulting firm cautions that 46 per cent of employees have taken time off work or noticed their coworkers take time away to look after their mental health following workplace changes,
specifically a change in job roles. Morneau Shepell President and CEO Alan Torrie stated to Global News that they have found that “among the types of organizational changes, job re-design has the strongest correlation to sick leave for both physical and mental health,” In addition, the study reports that 66 per cent of Canadians surveyed experienced at least one organizational change with their current employer. The breakdown indicates 39 per cent from team restructuring, 35 per cent from downsizing, 35 per cent from job re-design and 29 per cent from re-design of their physical office space. Type of profession There are jobs that are considered to be dangerous such as police work and logging or mining, however the jobs that are considered to sustain the most injuries are not discussed. In fact, some of the professions
listed on Health.com lists healthcare workers, nursing home and childcare workers, food service staff, social workers, artists, entertainers and writers among the people who suffer the highest rates of depression. The reasons being due to low pay, stressful situations, a sense of thanklessness and irregular hours. In a survey conducted by Monster Canada, they found that one out of four workers has left a job a result of stress. Seventeen percent considered it and overall 58 per cent of working Canadians say they are overwhelmed. Individuals who are new to their careers and making less than $40,000 per year were most likely to report resigning from their job due to stress. Those with an income bracket from $40,000 to $59,000, 27 per cent were more likely to quit for stress-related reasons. Stress, anxiety, depression and other issues are common
struggles of individuals with a certain job profile or who work in a particularly stressful work environment. The reality is that the jobs that are most suitable and beneficial to mental health are not defined. A lot of it depends on a person’s standards. The best way to maintain balance is to increase awareness and to focus on prevention through open discussions and seeking out support.

SHOWBIZ SHOWBUZZ PILIPINO EXPRESS

SHOWBIZ SHOWBUZZ PILIPINO EXPRESS

–CSF

Feng shui and the energy of your home — how clutter stunts your energy and your life One of the biggest problems associated with clutter is how it roots you in a home that leaves you little or no room for growth. Of course, the growth I’m talking about is the growth in your life, your career, your relationships, and your wealth. We’re not so different than the beautiful plants you buy at the local nursery that look wonderful but then need to be divided or repotted into a larger pot — everything grows. Your life is a living, growing thing When you’re overwhelmed by stuff, like a plant, you outgrow your pot and that’s when you start to see your relationships suffer, your business opportunities dry up, your health and vitality sapped, and finances become tighter and more restrictive. Worse than all the stuff and visual blight that clutter represents is the way it robs you and your home of vital, happy, and lively energy. Decluttering helps to remove blockages from your life that stop the flow of energy to you and everything you enjoy. Life is energy All life requires growth, evolution and movement. When we lack these elements in our life, the energy that makes up our lives becomes stunted. Imagine not having enough energy to power a light bulb: it grows dim and burns in a weakened state. When we have overstuffed homes – especially with outdated, unused and unloved items, our lives become weakened too. But how do you know when it’s clutter and when it’s disorganization? Clutter is when you have eight spatulas or a closet full of clothes you haven’t worn in years. Disorganization is when you can’t find what you’re looking for. Simply organizing your home with shelving, baskets, boxes, and other organizers will often clean up the disarray. In fact, by using organizing items you can often make more room than if you didn’t use them. Look at your challenges to find the kind of organizers you need. Is the big mess in the kitchen or the bathroom? Maybe the living room is out of control. You might not be able to find an important bill that needs to be paid because you don’t have a place to put the bills when they come in. No matter what your needs are, there are containers of every possible size and description that can help
you organize your house where you need it. Unlike a tornado, clutter doesn’t just happen – it gets that way over time Sometimes clutter is so deceptive that we don’t even notice it until we’re swamped by it. Hopefully, you’ve learned some things about clutter, like what it is, what to do about it, and how it’s different than disorganization. But, just like any good habit, such as exercise, decluttering isn’t something you do and then it’s done: it’s something you start and then keep doing. Too often people are bitten by the declutter bug and make one big push to declutter. That’s wonderful and having your clutter cleared in one fell swoop feels incredible and unburdens you. Most of the time, though, clutter is related to a vitamin deficiency. Either someone is frozen in fear and doesn’t do anything about the clutter, usually because they’re just overwhelmed, or they do it once or then forget about it for the next 25 years. The key to both is Vitamin C –”consistent C.” Schedule it Having a regular routine for decluttering is the single best way to keep it from getting out of hand. Pick a daily time that’s convenient such as every day at four o’clock. Then, spend fifteen or so minutes working at removing clutter (tossing mail, magazines, clearing out the refrigerator). Make it long enough you can accomplish something but not so long that you’ll give up. Declutter with other activities Instead of just putting freshly washed towels away toss out your old tired towels first. Or, while your child is getting ready for bed, take a moment to go through some drawers and remove outgrown or stained clothing. Decluttering as you do other things makes decluttering part of daily living — and that creates a routine. Make it a habit to be aware Don’t unload groceries into the refrigerator that’s messy or cluttered with jelly jars with only a teaspoon of jam in them. Instead, quickly go through the fridge and toss old items out and wipe down shelves before restocking, and do the same in the pantry – this is the quality of being present with clutter and your environment. Likewise, if you take a phone message and the pen you’re using doesn’t work,
How does clutter affect you and what benefit does decluttering offer? make it a habit to throw it away and not put it back in the holder (and I know you do this!). Be present Becoming present means that you are aware where you are. That sounds obvious, but if you’ll start becoming more aware and present wherever you are, you’ll notice that you stop forgetting things and misplacing items and you’ll notice how your home and office stay cleaner and neater more easily. You’ll also notice that you get more accomplished, you’ll scratch things off your mental and physical to-do lists, you’ll become less patient with people who drain you and you’ll get three very valuable qualities back into your life again. They are initiative, motivation and enthusiasm: the zest of living. Yes, old, broken, crowded, and too-much stuff can do that to you — rob you of zest for living. Free yourself and become aware of what you have and what you really use or don’t use. Getting rid of useless items will unburden your home, mind and spirit and will open up your life again! Your goals for decluttering this week: • Become more aware and present wherever you are. If you’re in the bathroom and you see a two-year old bottle of prescription medicine you don’t need, why not throw it out? • Straighten and organize
before adding anything. Take time to clean the refrigerator and/or pantry before adding groceries. It might take a little longer the first time, but if you do it for a few minutes before adding groceries, each time will get shorter and your fridge or pantry will be neat and tidy. • Worst first. Instead of handling a small clutter area, tackle the worst area first. Get the tough stuff out of the way and you’ll feel instantly energized. Enlist help if you need it. Ask a friend to help you and keep you strong. Who knows? Once you start really pitching, you might find that you are so energized that you don’t want to stop! • Clear off counters and floors. To get energy moving in your home and life, clear up all items off the floor and off the tops of dressers and counters. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I am simply overwhelmed by my clutter. I know it’s a problem and that I need to work on it. The problem is it’s just too much, I don’t know where to start. Answer: It’s easy to feel like that, and you are not alone in your overwhelm or not knowing where to start. Stuff overwhelms us all. Shoot, just with Amazon Prime, all the boxes coming to the house all the time do overwhelm me! Here’s what I would suggest: 1. Start at your front door. The foyer is a good place to clear out
and clean up. Hang up extra coats and hats and clear away clutter. Sweep the porch and add a basket to hold mail. Add a small bowl for your keys. 2. Go to the kitchen. These are notoriously messy places. Put away everything off the counter except those things you use daily like the coffee pot or paper towels. Everything else should go in the cabinet. Clearing off countertops will help a lot. I make toast about two times a month, but there’s no reason for the toaster to sit on the counter, so it goes in the cabinet. 3. Pick up all clothes in your bedroom. Put them in a pile to wash, hang or donate. Clear off the tops of dressers and tabletops. 4. Make your bed. Do this every day. The military insists on it because this starts your day off orderly and with a success. Once you see clear space, it will encourage you to keep clearing! Good luck! FEBRUARY 1 - 15, 2018
Malamang may dahilan. Baka hindi mo siya nabibigyan ng oras. Good ang ika-2, 3, 11 at 12.
Libra (Sept.

Sad to say, majority of those politicians are only visible at their constituencies kung panahon lang ng political season.
Decentralized governance. Payagang magsarili ang mga pamahalaang lokal. Kailangang marepaso ang revenue sharing of the national and local governments. Kasi, mahirap mahulaan kung kailan matatapos ang silipan ng two legislative chamber of congress. *** Sa ilalim ng RA 7160, according to reports, 40 per cent of revenue collected by the national government, umano ang napupunta sa local governments, aside from the local taxes they collect. State Policies, Sec.19 “The State shall develop a self-reliant and independent national
economy effectively controlled by Filipinos.” During the Marcos Martial Law, may federalism na noon. Biglang bawi
PAGE 21 naman si Mr. Joke-no. Mayroon daw namang nakalaang pondo for teachers. Gayunpaman, may isang makabuluhang solusyon.
The Chinese New Year of the Dog is coming soon, are you ready? The start of Chinese New Year 2018 (according to the lunar calendar) begins on the New Moon which this year falls on Feb. 16; it’s an event celebrated by millions of people, not only in China, but also around the world. Chinese New Year is a time of new beginnings and signifies a fresh start for everyone. For the Chinese and people of Chinese descent, the New Year is time for family reunion and thanksgiving. 2018 year of the Earth Dog is anticipated to be an eventful year with many changes. This is also predicted to be a year of social change, and also will create changes on how we live our life. While it is often said that the Dog is man’s best friend, this Dog year can bring many transformations – good and bad; but fortunately, it can be a growth year for everyone.
It can be luckier for some than others. If you are born in any of these years: 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, and 2018, you are a “Dog” in the Chinese zodiac. According to the Asian astrology, your year of birth - and the animal this represents - determines a lot about your personality traits. Those lucky earth Dogs born in 1958 that will be celebrating their 60th birthday in 2018 can enjoy a very good year. The Dog symbolizes luck. It abhors injustice and always reaches out to those in need, making him/her a natural candidate for humanitarian missions. The year of the Dog 2018 comes just after the Year of the Fire Rooster (2017) and before the year of the Earth Pig (2019). The Year of the Earth Dog will end on February 4, 2019.
