WINNIPEG – Marion Aunor and several local performers entertained an audience of more than 300 at Pampanga Banquet Hall on Sunday, December 27. Marion performed two energetic sets of her own original songs and covers of popular artists such as Adelle, Donna Lewis, and Walk the Moon, often wading into the crowd to serenade individual members of the audience. Younger sister Ashley Aunor joined Marion on stage for the last few songs, singing backup and playing guitar. And it was with just one acoustic guitar and two powerful voices that the sisters had the audience dancing to close show with the pop hit Shut Up and Dance – a perfect segue for the after-concert dance party. Lucille Nolasco of CKJS Radio’s Afternoon Pasada hosted the evening, keeping the programme flowing with performances by the Winnipeg Sikaran Arnis Academy, singer James Bryan Cruzat, and a production dance number from the 2015 Miss Debutante Finalists. Individual debutantes were also featured; Tehillah See MARION p22

Discipline Every year at around this time, the Philippine National Police (PNP) makes a show of “sealing” the muzzles of the firearms of all police officers with masking tape to “prevent” the cops from firing them indiscriminately during the holidays. It is an annual tradition that is supposed to assure the people that their protectors will not fire their guns into the air to celebrate Christmas and usher in the New Year. Numerous deaths and injuries have already been caused by such indiscriminate firing, with people apparently forgetting that the bullets they send flying into the air will come down to the earth with devastating and deadly speed. As the primary holders of firearms, the masking tape is supposed to give police officers pause because a broken seal means they have discharged their guns; if proven that the firing had nothing to do with a police operation, an officer will face charges. Unfortunately, this only works on paper, as evidenced by the yearly count of victims of mysterious bullets that shoot through the air throughout the country. At the start of 2015, one person was killed and 11 others were wounded by such projectiles, and while the number may be low compared with previous years, that was still 12 victims too many.
After all, there should be no such casualties in the first place since no one in his right mind would think that a bullet fired in the air is harmless. But every year there is always a sense of dread when the twin holidays come because one never knows if one will fall victim to an indiscriminate gunshot. Couple that with the fact that, except for Davao City where I and my family live, most areas in the country are the scene of firecracker and pyrotechnic explosions that mask the sound of firearms being discharged: in such a scenario, one needs to see more than masking tape over the muzzle of a gun. The PNP could continue its “sealing” ceremony indefinitely, but nothing beats imposing discipline on the ranks. The police are supposed to be our protectors, but the fact that they have to be told that they are not allowed to fire their guns to celebrate the holidays is an indictment on the kind of discipline that exists and is implemented within the organization. As the cliché goes, who will protect us from our protectors? And if our own police force has a hard time policing its own ranks, how can it be trusted to keep the peace for the populace? The rating game The latest Pulse Asia survey results show just how volatile
the situation is as far as the Presidential election is concerned. Vice President Jejomar Binay, whose ratings in previous months had dropped drastically behind Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Grace Poe, saw his numbers increase dramatically by 14 points in early December, hitting a full 33 per cent. In contrast, Poe dropped to second place in a statistical tie with Duterte, with 21 per cent and 23 per cent, respectively. Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Mar Roxas trails behind at 17 per cent, and Senator Miriam DefensorSantiago is at the bottom with 4 per cent. Supporters of Duterte are naturally a little disheartened by this turn of events, especially since the mayor had topped the last survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS). This speaks well of how the vice president has handled the debacles that have hounded his candidacy for quite some time. As the first one to declare his intent to run for President, Binay was the natural target for attacks of all kinds, especially from the administration, which has apparently made it its life’s mission to destroy the vice president’s name so that he becomes a non-threat to Roxas. Various allegations have been made against him and several cases have even been filed, and these indeed have had a negative impact on his standing. But over the past months he must have done something right, something so low-key that most people
missed it. Perhaps he worked his magic with the grassroots, which is his acknowledged strength; or perhaps he took advantage of the word war between Duterte and Roxas to make himself a better choice in comparison. Whatever it was, it was something the rest of the candidates could learn from — and watch out for. This also serves as a wakeup call for Duterte’s supporters. The mayor’s topping the last SWS survey is no reason to rest but serves as motivation to work harder. After all, Duterte had at that point replaced Binay as the prime target for attacks, and these apparently worked. Also, Duterte has seemingly been distracted from the campaign with his verbal skirmish with Roxas, something that grabbed headlines but apparently did nothing to push his candidacy forward. If anything, it diverted his attention from the real issues that the people have been pressing the candidates to address. And there is also another factor that the survey has exposed, something the other candidates have taken for granted. Binay may not be likable in social networks, but he has shown that online criticism and attacks have little bearing on the masses. Candidates who rely on Facebook, Twitter, and other such new media are well advised to try a new tack if they want to stay relevant to the voters. My wish for you in 2016 Another year has come and gone! The year 2015 saw notable global events such as the election of a new Canadian prime minister, developments in the Syrian refugee crisis, humanitarian efforts to help those affected by the earthquake in Nepal, and the tragic shootings in Paris. Also in the spotlight were ground breaking firsts. For example, the first-ever model with Down Syndrome walked down the runway during New York Fashion Week, new emoji icons with different skin tones were released, liquid water was shown to flow on Mars, a transgender person was nominated for an Emmy award for the first-time, and Disney Pixar released its first movie, Inside Out, starring an average girl, not a princess. These notable events this year, along with hundreds of others, have all been greeted with great interest and the usual response of criticism, fear-mongering and negative commentary. But of greater note are the other types of comments; those that exemplify empathy, kindness,
and support for fellow human beings. Comments of compassion for others and hashtags such #westandtogether, #loveoverfear and #prayfortheworld have a lasting effect on social media. This tidal wave of positivity and support meets the negativity and slander head on and in my humble opinion, wins out. There is no doubt that there exists a positive energy out there that is a growing force. There are many stories out there that highlight the goodness in people, and mainstream media often overlooks these tales of heroism and kindness. They are captured in smaller snippets on social media sites, and together with the positive responses, this is evidence that people do live, act and think with compassion. Showing empathy, living with kindness and mercy, and understanding differences are gestures and acts that are alive and well, even in the face of hatred and tragedy. Let us keep this in mind as we head into 2016 and begin to dream of the year ahead. I wish for you
kindness, courage, compassion, selflessness and hope. The human spirit is strong and will carry you through the joyful and difficult times. Remember: • Mistakes are gifts. Stop punishing yourself and think about what they havre taught you. • Push yourself past your comfort zone. Challenge yourself and grow. To stop learning means to stop living. • If you are carrying fear, sadness, guilt or shame, stop ignoring it. The only way to ease the pain is to go through it. Talk about it, feel the emotions, and then let it go. • Material things are just things; they are replaceable. Don’t let them get in the way of relationships with loved ones, which are unique and meaningful. • Build your team. Surround yourself with supportive and positive people. • Live by the New Golden Rule: Treat others as they would like to be treated. “If you don’t love yourself, you cannot love others. You will not be able to love others.
If you have no compassion for yourself then you are not able of developing compassion for others.” – Dalai Lama Cheryl Dizon-Reynante is the founder of Nexus Counselling and a licensed therapist with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. New Year and new hope for immigration It is the new solar year for us all and there is hope that immigration will become an easier and more caring process. The Syrian refugee resettlement movement is in full swing and the government has been moving efficiently to ensure its announced targets are met. How different is this from the previous government when everything was an excuse to do nothing or to make the process harder, and the immigrants or refugees were said to be responsible? It would appear that humanitarian concern and fairness have taken the place of ideological barriers and empty promises of safety and security first. We can contrast the realities of Canada under Justin Trudeau’s leadership with that of the GOP
contest in the United States with leadership hopefuls like Donald Trump saying he will ban all travel by believers in Islam. For those of us who measure discrimination and bigotry this is a step further down the same the road the former Conservative government went on trying to ban the niqab. The Liberals have already announced their intention to meet the target of accepting 25,000 Syrians, which they promised in their election platform, and a further 25,000 for 2016. The total number would become something like 50,000 with a mix of government and private sponsorship. This action goes a long way to alleviating some of the suffering of refugees in camps and to re-establishing
Canada’s well-earned reputation as a caring nation and safe haven for displaced persons at whose lives are at risk. The stories in the news have all been positive and stand out in comparison to the anti-Muslim sentiments in the United States, where other GOP contenders are trying to outpace Trump in a race to the bottom. In stark contrast we have the Minister of Immigration John McCallum announcing another move that shows the character of today’s government. The former Conservative government moved to deny health coverage to all refugee claimants inside Canada. This move was widely denounced by doctors in Canada as cruel and unfeeling. It also did not make sense economically because the denial of Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP)
to claimants meant they had little choice but go to emergency rooms in hospitals across Canada. The anti-immigrant lobby welcomed the denial but there was no cost saving in the action. The denial of benefits was appealed to the Federal Court of Canada who actually ruled against the measure as “unconstitutional.” The next step for the former Harper government was to appeal the decision and this is what was left to the incoming Liberal government. Minister McCallum announced on December 16, 2015 that he is ending the appeal. “In July 2014, the Federal Court of Canada ruled that those changes violated Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms and our government has promised to fully restore the IFHP. The temporary coverage announced
after the Federal Court decision will stay in place until a new program is implemented.” It is not possible for the Trudeau government to roll back all of the excesses of the former government, as they relate to immigration. But the actions to date are positive and in keeping with Canada’s international reputation as a country that cares about others in the world and upholds strong values of fairness. Resolutions 2016 edition 2015. What a year! Turned 40 and moved the family three provinces away. What else happened? It’s taking me a bit of time to think back and remember exactly what went down this past year. Is it because my mind is not as sharp as it used to be? My wife would probably agree with that. Why is it that as I get older, time passes at a dizzying pace? I still remember being 12 years old, wanting so bad to be 16. It meant driver’s license and freedom! Then at 16 I wanted so bad to be 18. Time was moving so slooooowly! Then it happened. I turned 18, 19, and 25 then all of a sudden I’m 30! Whoa now, what the heck is going on here! My 20’s were a blur. And then I had kids. One day I’m changing diapers in the middle of the night, next thing I’m driving them to their jobs. Where does the time go? Excuse me while I grab a tissue and wipe away my tears. By sharing my stories in the Pilipino Express for the better part of a decade, I hope you’ve enjoyed little glimpses of my life. My wife and kids have been implicated many times over, and thankfully they haven’t objected to having
their stories shared with you all. 2016. I have a feeling this will be an interesting year. What are going to be this year’s headlines? Who will be President? Will Justin Trudeau ever return my calls? Will we find life on Mars? Who knows? What are your New Years’ resolutions? Here are my Top five: Resolution #1 - I know it’s cliché but I want to be healthier. I want to eat better and I may even take up jogging. Reality - It’s been years since I’ve ran further than from the car to the mall entrance. I’m going to get winded and I will probably swear the whole time. Plus the fact that it’s hilly here, I’ll probably give up very quickly. The good news is, what goes up, must come down. I could just roll downhill. Resolution #2 – Remove the negativity from my life. For some time now, something about Facebook was bugging me. Yes, it was great to see friends, family and their kids growing up, but for every good story, there seemed to be considerably more sad, mad or negative stories. It would seem that most people rant, just because they can. Instead of “unfriending” them and answering angry text messages,
Dale and his mom, Cora, who is celebrating a milestone in 2016 it was easier to leave. Reality – Facebook is a way of life for so many people. It is amazing that we can feel connected with friends and family from a distance. I mean, isn’t it amazing that we have constant updates on what people are eating and how many poops Jimmy banged out in a day? Sorry for the visual. Resolution #3 – Go somewhere I’ve never been before. As you know, it’s been over a year since I moved to beautiful British Columbia. There is plenty to see and do in my own proverbial backyard. I’m surrounded by mountains and ocean. How great is that? Reality – I’m surrounded by mountains and ocean, which
means I’ll be climbing or running up and downhill. Remember what I said about running? Being on Vancouver Island, I am surrounded by water, which means if I want to head over to the mainland, I’m spending dolla-dolla bills to get there. My kids need to learn how to swim. Resolution #4 – Work less, play more. My job keeps me busy. Most weeks I’m pulling in long hours. Thankfully, I still have time to play with the kids. Before you know it, they won’t want to spend time with their dear old dad. Reality – I’m not getting younger. I value my time with my kids. But by doing so, I’m spending more time with my chiropractor
and physiotherapist. My back just isn’t the same anymore. Resolution #5 – Don’t be too proud to see my doctor regularly. Who knows my body better than me? If I feel off, go see the doctor. If I feel like my mole is starting to grow a pair of eyes, go see the doctor. You get what I’m putting down? Reality – I’m 40. That’s when doctors start exploring parts of my body that shouldn’t be explored. Just sayin’. Like I said, 2016 will be an interesting year. Dale is the director of communications for a school district in BC and continues to write stories from afar.

How not to break career resolutions for 2016 New Year’s resolutions are easily made and often times, they are just as easily broken. However, when goals are adhered to, the potential to make changes in the upcoming year increases and most likely will be achieved. Accountemps, a staffing firm recently conducted a poll which found that 68 per cent of professionals make New Year’s resolutions about their careers. The poll also found that there are six top goals for individuals in 2016: to get a raise; develop their own skills; get promoted; make a career change; get a new job in their field; and build their professional network. The survey indicated that the top career resolutions are developing skills and getting a raise, with 27 per cent each. Perhaps you already thought about some professional goals as part of your performance plan or career development plan for 2016. Here are some tips to get started this year. Improve my work performance Performance can be improved in many ways and can be impacted negatively by many different things. One factor that contributes to performance is productivity. One habit I have noticed among employees nowadays is accessing social media on company time, such as posting comments on social media accounts throughout the day during work hours. If you have extra time on your hands, offer to take on a project outside of your portfolio and look for opportunities to help out a team member with a heavier workload. Get a promotion The best way to do this would be to set up a meeting with your team leader to discuss career objectives, as well as the ways in which you may be able to bring more value to your company in a higher ranking position. If a promotion is not something that can happen immediately due to a question of readiness, it is not a bad thing to work with your boss to identify the gaps and focus on improving on them. According to the Accountemps study, 15 per cent of professionals have decided to move up the ladder at their company this coming year.
Get a new job I always say to those who seek my help with resume building that writing a resume is a job in itself. In order to get new job, one must ensure their “marketing package,” or the resume, is carefully written in order for the “product,” or the job seeker, to get an interview. Getting a new job is not something that happens overnight. It requires time and effort. Schedule some time once a week to revise your resume and devote some time to researching new job opportunities. Enhance my marketability This particular goal goes hand in hand with the previous goal and vice versa. In order to market yourself, you need to develop your skill sets by either pursuing a certification or taking courses. Another idea would be to pursue a leadership role in a professional association or volunteering with a non-profit group. For individuals who wish to hold a professional designation in their field, there may be a requirement to take a certain amount of coursework and involvement with the professional association. Whatever resolutions you may have, the main importance would be to make sure your goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timespecific (S.M.A.R.T.). It is time to start fresh and get ready for 2016. It is time to reflect on what you accomplished in 2015 and look forward to do things bigger and better. Sewer gases in the home Decaying waste materials in public and private sewer and septic systems generate sewer gases. Methane is the major single component of sewer gas that includes a mixture of nontoxic and toxic gases, such as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ammonia, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. Inappropriately disposed flammable liquids and gasoline can also contribute to sewer gases. Sewer gases can cause many health hazards to the building occupants. Hydrogen sulphide is a volatile and very lethal gas that can damage several systems in the body at once, most particularly the nervous system. Hydrogen sulphide can be smelled at 0.47 parts per billion by half of human adults. The gas will start to cause eye soreness at 10 parts per million (ppm) and eye injury at 50 ppm. It can also cause other lowlevel symptoms like drowsiness, headache, nausea, dizziness and nervousness. High concentration exposures can induce pulmonary edema, and still higher levels (at 800-1,000 ppm) will cause almost abrupt loss of consciousness and death. Hydrogen sulphide is accountable for the distinctive rotten-egg smell of sewer gas that
can be overbearing even at very small concentrations. However, the gas’s odour is a safeguard as it warns building dwellers of the leak way before they are in any severe danger. It is essential to be reminded that at approximately 100 ppm, the olfactory nerve becomes incapacitated, eliminating the victim’s sense of smell and, consequently, their responsiveness of the peril. Ammonia also emits another warning smell, which will scorch the nostrils and gradually annoy the respiratory tract and mucous membranes. Ammonia, unlike hydrogen sulphide, is very irritating, so building dwellers are likely to evacuate before its concentration increases to toxic levels. Aside from hydrogen sulphide, methane is also another explosive component of sewer gas. Vapours from inappropriately disposed fuel products can further amplify the risk of explosion or fire. When sewer gases disperse into household air, they slowly displace oxygen and suffocate dwellers. The effects of deficiency of oxygen consist of dizziness, nausea, headache and eventually unconsciousness. At extremely low oxygen concentrations, or less than 12 per cent, unconsciousness and death will
take place rapidly and without forewarning. Oxygen will be at its lowest concentrations in the basement and crawlspace, which are where heavy sewer gases and methane are likely to accumulate. Immediately contact a qualified plumber if you suspect that sewer gases might be the cause of odours in your home. The design of the plumbing system depends on a connection between the sewer system and household fixtures. This is the primary reason why a huge amount of effort is spent to make sure that waste products and resultant gases flow in one direction. Many failures in the plumbing system may permit sewer gases to flow back into a home. Plumbing vents should not be installed too close to windows and air intakes in homes equipped with HVAC air handlers that draw in outside air for ventilation. Air and wind surge around the building can let sewer gases enter the home even where air intakes and plumbing vents are properly located. Homeowners can alter the height of vents and install vent pipe filters to lessen the problem. Sewer gases can also diffuse through cracks in a building’s foundation when the leach field septic system leaks. Vent pipe cracks are more difficult to diagnose than cracks in the drain line, which is typically accompanied by visible water leaks. Vent pipe cracks can allow a significant amount of sewer gases to enter the home.
Plumbers can find these cracks by using a special device that emits artificial smoke and propels it into the plumbing drain system. The smoke pressurizes the drain and vent systems and escapes through cracks and loose fittings. In most cases, obtrusive sewer gases are produced by a loss of the water barricade where traps have become dry. More particularly in dry weather, infrequent use of a floor drain, water closet, or shower can allow for fast evaporation and admission of sewer gases into the living spaces. The locations in which floor drains are most likely to dry out are near furnaces
and water heaters, in mechanical rooms, in workshop areas and in a janitor’s closets. Homeowners can maintain the water barricade by pouring water down the drains and using the fixtures regularly. Automatic drain-trap primers can also be installed to periodically deliver small quantities of water to the traps. White–the feng shui colour that brings new beginnings Few colours can stand up to the power of white. Black is often looked upon as a power colour, especially in feng shui, but the one colour that imbues that power is white. White is a colour of metal, and metal makes water (black). On the colour hierarchy, white holds its own as the top colour to use as its own or in combination with other colours. No other colour goes with another colour the same way white does. Just think about the white ceilings, white woodwork in homes, and how many homes are painted white. Besides its versatility, white is the colour of perfection. In feng shui, white is the colour of heaven and that’s why Asian mourners wear white to reflect this belief of leaving one state and entering another. In the west, white is viewed as purity and untainted, and clean, i.e., doctor’s white coats or a bride’s white wedding dress. White also is a colour that evokes the start of a new
beginning. The colour itself is open and clear, opening the way for complete and unfettered creativity, not imposing itself on your mind or your preconceptions the way a lemon yellow, vibrant orchid or chartreuse do. In feng shui white is a yang colour that represents authority, blessings and assistance. White is the essence of all, being in equal balance, and containing all colours of the colour spectrum, evoking fairness and equal treatment. When you need a new beginning, more authority and helpful people, white is here to help. But avoid the all-white house – it can lead to feelings of stress, worry and isolation. White goes well with almost anything – white and gold, white and silver, white and yellow, white and blue, white and purple, white and beige. All these combinations are supportive and simply stunning. Even so, too few women wear white.
They say it makes them look heavier and that black is slimming. If your white clothes are too tight, like any colour, it will make you look heavier. But why miss out on all the great things white colours can bring to your life (like more money, helpful people, and a fresh start)? No matter what your dress size, nothing looks more heavenly than a beautiful white sweater in winter or a cool white dress in summer. Go up a size in white clothes and see if that doesn’t make you look slimmer because the fit is looser. White is great around the house too. Far from being sterile, white is the essence of homey relaxation. Just think about those beautiful ocean cottages with white shingled siding, or the way a white room feels clean and relaxing. In feng shui, you can use white to energize your life to magnetize yourself to attract good fortune – and who couldn’t use more of that? Here are six ways white can bring more heavenly goodness to your life using white colours. 1. Go in a new direction with white. When you need re-invention or when you are
moving into a new time of your life, white is your yang go-to colour. Use white in your home, bed linens, clothing, jewellery and flowers to help you move in your new direction. Making a clean break such as from a long difficult relationship, moving to a new job or home, surrounding yourself with white will help you see yourself in the new position, home or relationship. That’s because white is, after all, a blank canvas, and allows you to “paint” a new picture for yourself. 2. Zoom ahead in a white car. White cars lead the pack in
colour selection in North America as the most favoured coloured car. And it’s no wonder. White is the speed of light, and we are all busy, busy these days. White cars are excellent for anyone. 3. Use white for protection. Wear white when you feel that the world is against you. Because white has all the colours in harmony, the whole rainbow of colours is surrounding you with protection. Even simply visualizing white light enveloping your body or home offers protection against negative forces. See FENG SHUI p9

Growing up through the years - a “throwback” article I will never forget how I felt when I was first asked if I wanted to have a column and write for the Pilipino Express. The first thing that came to mind (after jumping up and down from excitement, of course) was “what should I call my column?” After much brainstorming, my family and I finally decided on the column title “Growing Up,” hence what you see here today. I remember my sister saying how perfect the title is because growing up never stops and there will always be something to write about. Fast forward to today – ten years later – I could not agree more! Growing up truly never stops and learning is a continuous process. So even though you may not be a youth, please continue reading as this column is also meant for you! I cannot believe it has already been ten years since the start of this column! To celebrate this tenyear milestone, I thought to share some quotes from some of my “Growing Up” articles. Call this a “throwback,” if you will, and come journey with me! *** “The main reason for me writing this is so that you can see that you don’t need to run a
marathon like Terry Fox or stop all wars just for you to make a difference. No, it starts from all the little things! Today’s the day to realize that in every individual there is greatness, there is potential to make a difference.” (“Today’s the day to realize,” October 2006) “We should all learn to be patient and satisfied with what we have in front of us. Enjoy it while it lasts, no matter what age. Enjoy what you have and be thankful for all the blessings and always remember, you may not be a child in appearance, but you can always be a child at heart” (“Remember those days,” February 2007) “This Valentine’s Day, instead of looking for a secret admirer, turn to your parents and give them the love that they have always been giving you.” (What is true love?” February 2008) “The best thing to do in a situation where you don’t know what to do is to talk to someone you really trust. Remember, no matter how independent and old you think you are, you can still (and should) ask for help. (Behind that smile, May 2007) “So I invite whoever is reading this right now to continue to live your life and do not be
afraid to live in this moment and season fully. However, when something ends, be smart enough to let go and recognize that it is a beautiful opportunity to begin again.” (“Like the seasons,” October 2013) “Probably the biggest lesson I learned is that God whispers. Do you ever find yourself asking God, ‘Can you please give me a sign?’ God may not answer us in the ways we want and expect Him to. He may not come with a grand entrance, but God surely whispers and we can recognize this if we would only listen. We can easily get caught in the chaos of our busy lives and we may not know it, but we might be shrugging off God’s messages to us. Don’t be afraid of silence.” (The World Youth Day experience, September 2013) *** Looking back, I can truly say I have grown up in comparison to that 13-year old version of me when I started writing for this column back in 2006. However, the truth is, I am still growing up but have just entered a different stage in my life when I’ll face new challenges and experiences. I believe it is timely with the New Year for this type of article and message. To end off, I’d like to say thank you for learning with me, and growing up with me throughout my teenage years! I

would be what are you doing differently to help you create change? Are you improving your outlook, your health, or your environment with feng shui? Do you just hope things will be better? Or do you make efforts to make change? The Red Lotus Letter is designed to help you make changes in your life through small, easy steps that, over time, create big change. I think about
a client I had years ago that had tried every diet she could think of and had worked so hard and was never able to lose weight. Her doctor warned her that her health was in peril, yet she couldn’t stand the thought of measuring out anymore portion sizes or counting another calorie. She asked if feng shui could help and booked a consultation appointment (something different See FENG SHUI p10
4. Exert your authority. Blue is the colour of trustworthiness, but white is the colour of authority. If you have a big presentation to meet or need to shore up flagging self-esteem, white is the colour to choose. White commands attention and those who wear white are unabashed about asserting themselves. 5. Wear white when you need help. When you need people to help you move ahead, such as superiors, white will protect you from people who are jealous and scheming, and draw attention to you from those who want to help you get ahead. 6. Use white for cleansing yourself and pushing your personal “reset” button. Nothing feels quite as good as sleeping on newly washed, crisp white sheets or seeing a stack of clean white towels in the bathroom. When you need a new beginning, wear plenty of white and surround yourself with white colours, such as white flowers, white towels, or fluffy white bathrobe to help cleanse and reenergize your entire system. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I’m dreading the New Year, Katie. Every year seems to march in and out and I’m in the same circumstances. Please help me create a better year. Answer: I understand your predicament. My first question
am now entering a different stage of life and I am looking forward to continue learning and growing with all of you, but now as a young adult! So remember, no matter how old we are and what stage of life we are in, we’re all still
“growing up.” I encourage all of us to be even more aware of this in this New Year, be open to new experiences, different perspectives, and never close the door for learning opportunities. Wishing you all the best with this New Year ahead!

other than solving math problems. The Chapter would like to thank all participants, attendees and especially their sponsors who provided door prizes at the event.
The Filipino Members Chapter of Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba held its annual Christmas Party at the Canton Food Gallery on Saturday night, December 5, bringing together families, friends, sponsors, and colleagues. Angelito Velasco, the chapter president, announced and presented 16 new Engineers-InTraining and six new Professional Engineers to recognize their achievements. Due to the very successful fundraising campaign and donations, the chapter awarded not two, but a total of three bursary
Growth: learning to expect more It’s easy to “baby” any child, especially your own. I, myself, am not a parent, however, I find myself “babying” those related to me, or who I have seen grow up in front of my eyes. My first year of teaching began in September 2012, and when I think about my expectations of my students then as a new teacher, I cringe a little. It was a learning curve, even for me, to come to realize that if I wanted better results, I had to learn to ask for them. Your child is capable of so
much, as long as you set goals together and learn to hold them accountable for it. I learned this with my second batch of students. I demanded students who were open to communicating. I was surprised that openly asking for this led to this exact result. I wasn’t “hinting” for it. I told them specifically that I expected more. They gave me more. Could it really be that simple? Since my second year of teaching, I have learned to be clear throughout the year about my goals
for my students. With my current students I ask for responsibility, I ask for time management, and for self-regulation. They are in charge of getting their assignments done, for asking for help when something is unclear, for reporting to me when there is an issue that needs an adult’s help to solve. They have not disappointed me. Ask any of the students what my “end goal” for them is before they leave for seventh grade, and they can tell you. It truly is that simple – as long as you are consistent, clear, and
concise. Parent tip: encouragement Take small, doable steps at first. I do not begin a new academic year by telling students, “Here is your homework. Please have all five assignments ready for tomorrow morning.” Begin with setting a small, reasonable and age-appropriate expectation. This applies to any area you wish – household chores, schoolwork, sports and extracurricular activities, etc. As they begin showing you that they are meeting these goals, begin
to ask a little more of them. Along the way, don’t forget to be gentle with them. Self-improvement is a lot of work, and there will most likely be some setbacks. Praise them when they are successful and problem-solve with them when they are not. This winter break is the best time to set out goals – you can even call them New Year’s Resolutions. Best of luck, families! Judianne Jayme is an educator teaching sixth grade and a division-wide mentor in the Winnipeg School Division.

the reflection of your life) and then through to laundry room (draining water = energy loss, gaining weight) and into the first room of the house, the kitchen (gaining weight). She had to walk out of the garage and up the pretty walkway to her lovely front door and enter into her home’s foyer with a beautiful chandelier. Then she moved her family room that adjoined the kitchen to an upstairs game room where she no longer saw the kitchen when she watched TV. We also changed
dishes, the kitchen colour, and a few other adjustments. She didn’t diet, she didn’t count calories, and she didn’t measure portions. What was different? How she saw herself. She no longer saw herself the same way (as the garage with the excess clutter and mess, i.e., weight) or the laundry room (drained energy) or the kitchen (overeating). What she saw instead was a pretty walkway to her front door (new opportunities/ new version of herself), a beautiful entrance (an improved vision of
herself), and a reinforcement of family life versus food (moving the family room upstairs away from the kitchen). In short, in only a few months, she changed her vision of herself by changing the vision of herself reflected in her house. What can you do in your home to change your vision? What are you looking at every day that reinforces stagnancy (maybe that mildew in your shower? Or the leaking, dripping kitchen sink?). Look around and see what changes you can make
in your home to reinforce a new vision of a new life, and then make those changes. I’d be happy to help you. She lost 80 pounds in 90 days. What did she do? She stopped coming into the house through her cluttered, messy garage (unattractive vision – what you see first is often

CRISTY... “Simply put, we cannot argue with success. All You Need Is Pag-ibig?
See CRISTY p20

Payback time. Most Promising American Celebrity in the Philippines.”
Bawal daw sabihin ang number two.

What’s cooking Winnipeg? Happy New Year at mabuhay tayong lahat! na kuwentuhan.

Good days ang ika-9 at 10.

Hintay-hintay lang muna kapag may time.
– CSF

Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach crowned Miss Universe 2015 LAS VEGAS – A worldwide audience watched as Miss Universe Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, was declared Miss Universe 2015 on December 20th at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. An actress and model, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was born in Stuttgart, Germany to a German father and a Filipino mother. She grew up in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. She speaks German, Filipino and English. The 26-year old Pia finished her secondary education with the ABS-CBN Distance Learning Center and studied culinary arts at the Center
for Asian Culinary Studies in Metro Manila. At the age of 11, she began her acting career under the screen name Pia Romero. She is also a stylist and writer for the lifestyle section of a leading newspaper in the Philippines. This is the third time that a Miss Philippines has won the Miss Universe title. Gloria Diaz won the title in 1969 and Margarita Moran won in 1973. Pia’s win ended a 42-year drought for a Miss Universe from the Philippines. Emmy Award winner Steve Harvey hosted the three-hour event. The pageant ran very
smoothly until Harvey incorrectly announced on live television that Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, had won the crown. Miss Colombia was given the crown and sash but Gutierrez only had them for a little over two minutes when Harvey returned to the stage to apologize for his error and to announce the actual winner of the crown, Miss Philippines. Harvey’s gaffe instantly became a globally trending story on social media that even caught the attention of those otherwise not interested in the Miss Universe pageant. In Manila, presidential
spokesman Edwin Lacierda didn’t address the controversial win but said, “in bagging this victory, Ms. Wurtzbach not only serves as a tremendous source of pride for our people, but also holds up the banner of our women and of our country – as a true representative of what the Filipina can achieve.” Emmy Award nominee Niecy Nash, Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo, football legend Emmitt Smith, and celebrity entertainment mogul Perez Hilton made up the judging panel. Additionally, for the first time ever, fans worldwide had a say in who was crowned Miss Universe. With a virtual seat
at the judging table, fans were able to vote on each category to help decide who walked away the Miss Universe 2015 title. Throughout the telecast, contestants representing 80 countries competed in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and the interview. The telecast concluded with Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega from Colombia crowning her successor. Final Results: First RunnerUp: Miss Universe Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez; Second Runner-Up: Miss USA, Olivia Jordan. (Source: www. missuniverse.com)

A message from Marion Finally here in LA after a delayed connecting flight from Winnipeg to Calgary to the U.S., and despite being completely exhausted, I still do not regret going all the way to Winnipeg and having it as the last stop of my “North American Tour.” Winnipeg is very special to my family because of all the friends we have from there. So being able to perform for them as well as the Filipino community there felt like a bucket list item I finally got to check off. It also doesn’t hurt that I got to take my family to Canada with me during the holidays and have a one-of-a-kind, minus 31 C, outdoor photo shoot in nothing but a cocktail dress! But overall, I really want to thank Tito Rey-Ar Reyes, Tita Emmie Joaquin and Paul Morrow of Pilipino Express for organizing the whole trip and giving me the opportunity to help out Bahay Aruga this Christmas through the benefit show. Some other people I want to thank are all the sponsors and crew who helped out and made the whole trip and show memorable. Lastly, I want to thank all the people who came to the show for helping out our cause! Here’s hoping we have another show some time soon! – Marion Aunor, December 29, 2015
