Canadian garbage dumped in Philippine landfill

MANILA – Tonnes of exported Canadian garbage have been sent to a landfill near Capas, Tarlac according to Philippine government officials on July 14.

The trash has been at the centre

of an environmental controversy since the Bureau of Customs seized 55 containers of it in mid 2013.

The issue has made Canada a target for Philippine politicians and

environmental activists. A petition demanding, “Canada, pick up your garbage!” and for Ottawa to immediately “re-export” the trash, has obtained 25,000 signatures, See GARBAGE p8

Keeping our waters safe In an archipelagic country like the Philippines, one would think that sea travel would have been brought to a level of sophistication that would make it easy, convenient, and safe. In some ways this is true, especially when compared with even just 10 years ago when even the wearing of lifejackets on board boats was not common. Mostly, however, travel by water can be a hazardous proposition given the antiquated vessels that are still allowed to ply our channels and the laxity with which our officials implement safety rules.

It is still too early to say what caused the latest boat sinking in the country – this time in Ormoc City – that killed scores of people, but already there are reports that the boat was overloaded both with passengers and cargo. The bad weather was also a factor, and the mixture of the two was surely a recipe for disaster. The boat’s owner and its captain are now behind bars as they await the filing of criminal charges, but it must be said that they could not have committed anything had maritime authorities and coast guard personnel not allowed the boat to sail under questionable

conditions. The death toll from the tragedy has reached 59 as of this writing; the number could rise as operations continue to find survivors – and fatalities.

The tragedy is just one in a series of many boat and shipping accidents that have plagued the country’s seas over the decades.

Literally thousands have died from such incidents, the most infamous of which was the sinking of the MV Doña Paz in 1987 that killed as more than 4,000 people – the worst maritime disaster during peacetime. In virtually all the cases, some form of neglect was to blame. In other words, they need not have happened had the boat or ship owners only taken the rules seriously and the authorities implemented them strictly. Most of the accidents were preventable, and the loss of lives was completely unnecessary.

The recent boat sinking reminds us just how we still have to go to make our waters safe. Government and the people must make sure those at fault are punished so that future incidents are prevented.

Vigilance Here’s one for the books.

According to Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 13 Judge Rowena Apao-Adlawan, only 18 out of the 3,507 total pending cases in the two drugs court in the city have been disposed in May. That’s a disposal rate of only one out of every 194, or a mere half of one percent. To call this low is a complete understatement. To make matters worse, the judge traced the reason for the abysmal rate to the very police officers who bring these cases to court in the first place. Judge ApaoAdlawan said one of the issues and concerns the drug courts face is that policemen do not appear as witnesses in court.

Now to be sure, there are reasons for this non-appearance.

One is that sometimes the police officers handling the case retire from the service. A second reason is that some officers are assigned to other regions, making it difficult and even impossible to continue attending hearings. But while these two may have valid grounds, a little coordination on the part of the Philippine National Police (PNP) with the courts will certainly go a long way. After all, it does not take much effort for the police to inform the court of these two eventualities, and it will allow the court to take

measures to make sure the cases against drug suspects continue.

A third reason, however, opens up a chilling possibility.

According to Judge ApaoAdlawan, many cases are delayed or do not prosper because some police officers “lose interest” in pursuing the case. “There are instances even during trial that the policeman would intentionally forget the details of the operation,” she said. There is something amiss here, to be sure: how can a police officer who was part of the operation forget details of the case – unless, of course, a deal had already been struck somewhere? The judge went so far as to say she will request the Supreme Court to give the courts Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras so they can “assess the demeanour of the policeman testifying in the court” – in other words, to catch them if they are lying.

Davao may be known as a relatively drug-free city, but we must stay vigilant lest drug pushers – or sadly even police officers – turn things around.

The first Filipinos in Canada, revisited In my 16 March 2015 column, I wrote about “The First Filipinos in Canada.” There, I discussed the question of when the first documented Filipino arrived in Canada, which had previously been established as Marcial Aranas in 1934. In this earlier column, I discussed findings that suggested there might have been Filipino migrants in Canada from the U.S. as early as 1905.

These migrants were listed under the category “Malay,” which at that time was often in reference to the ethno-cultural group, rather than nationality. Given the historical circumstances of American colonial relations in the Philippines at the turn of the century, and the practice of Asian migrants moving north to find work on Canada’s West Coast, I argued it was likely – though not for certain – that these were the first Filipino migrants in Canada.

This month, I write with more conclusive evidence that suggests Filipinos were, beyond a doubt, living in Canada earlier than 1934, and I would like to share this finding and its importance with you here. A few weeks ago, I attended a history conference at the University of Ottawa,

where I presented some of my research on the Winnipeg Filipino community. I also took a couple of days to visit the Library and Archives of Canada (LAC), the nation’s archival depository. One must submit a request to view documents days, if not weeks, in advance of a visit to allow archivists time to retrieve and check the status of the documents.

Unlike a library, where a visitor may peruse the holdings, all archival holdings are kept secure to maintain their condition.

Thus, one does not know exactly what an archival holding will contain – some catalogues go into detail but, given the size of most archival holdings, this is not always possible.

One holding I had requested to see was on Immigration to Canada from the United States; I had come across this source through a search on “Filipino immigration,” and so I thought this was a briefing or other similar document on the topic. On the contrary, it turned out to be a leger of immigrants coming to Canada from the United States in the 1920s. I almost put the item away as soon as I realized what it was: an old, dusty, and massive

book (about 3 feet by 2 feet) – but figured I’d take a look. The pages listed world nationalities, beside which were ticked numbers indicating how many came from the U.S. during a particular month.

Other information included gender, area of occupation, and where in Canada they settled.

Remembering what I had found about Malays in 1905, I began flipping through the pages; interested in the material I was seeing.

The reading room of the LAC is a wonderful place to be; filled with other researchers quietly searching for facts, and with wide windows perched over the wonderful river, one gets lost in their work. Thus, I nearly fell off my seat when I read a hand-written entry for a Filipino migrant.

Listed as entering Canada from the United States was one

“Philippino,” coming to work as a clerk in Quebec. Who knows what this lone Filipino migrant was doing, who he travelled with, or what his plans (or dreams) were.

This information is lost. We can confidently hypothesize, though, about the route this gentleman took. He was likely in his 20s or 30s, and likely had education as he was hired as a clerk. If he went through education in the Philippines, he likely attended a school or university established by the Americans; this was a common practice because Filipinos were wanted to work in the U.S., but the colonial American government wanted to ensure they attained an education equal to that in the U.S. Thus, many schools were established along an American model. A Viagra for women?

Dear Ate Anna, I heard that women would soon be able to get a drug like Viagra in the United States. I was talking to my sister about this and she was wondering when we would be able to buy it in Canada.

Can you give us some information about this? Thank you.

Shirley Dear Shirley, In June an advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended approval of a drug call flibanserin, which is designed to boost a lack of sexual desire in premenopausal women. It is important to note, however, that the panel members who voted yes said that full approval from the FDA should come with certain conditions like proper warning labels and education about the drug’s possible side effects. While the FDA usually follows the recommendations of the advisory panel, it has not actually approved the drug yet.

The FDA rejected this drug in 2010, and again in 2013, because of side effects like fainting, nausea, dizziness, sleepiness and a sudden drop in blood pressure.

Supporters of the drug claim that the FDA has failed women because they have the same right to treatment as men. Other women’s health networks and organizations argue that the data on its safety and effectiveness doesn’t give enough reason to approve it.

Ate Anna believes that we need to look at women’s sexuality from a holistic perspective, especially when we are talking about “sexual dysfunction.”

We must also recognize that all groups involved in the discussion have their own biases that they are promoting. The pharmaceutical industry’s argument that this is a “women’s equality” issue needs to be balanced with concerns regarding the safety of the drug and its impact on women’s health.

For one thing, flibanserin does not work in the same way that Viagra does. Flibanserin shifts the balance of the brain chemicals (dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin) responsible for sexual response. If approved, it will treat what is called “female sexual interest/arousal disorder” (FSIAD) in premenopausal females. Viagra treats erectile dysfunction. It works by increasing blood flow to a male’s penis to result in an erection strong enough to accomplish intercourse. Both drugs were initially being investigated for

other medical conditions – Viagra for heart disease and flibanserin as an antidepressant.

There is also a big difference in the way the two drugs are taken. Viagra is taken as needed (when the person wants to have intercourse), but flibanserin is meant to be taken every day. There is some concern about the drug’s interactions with other drugs, including common depression treatments and alcohol.

So where does that leave a woman whose level of sexual interest or desire is less than she would like? Ate Anna believes she needs to do some homework to make sure she has accurate information. Women do have the right to enjoy their sexuality and it would be wonderful to have a pill that would ensure satisfying sex whenever we want it. However, women’s sexuality is complex and there are many factors in a person’s life that can affect desire and/or sexual satisfaction. There is also a wide range of what’s normal in human sexual health and sexual desire or satisfaction.

For some women, physical factors, such as a medical condition or the side effects of medication, negatively affect sex drive and/or arousal. Emotional factors such as relationship problems, a history of sexual trauma, or the stresses of everyday life can also impact sexual satisfaction. Lifestyle issues like lack of exercise, diet, smoking or alcohol use also affect our sexuality. These issues can be looked into before deciding to take a drug on a daily basis.

We live in a culture that promotes quick solutions and these often involve reaching for a medication of some kind, but it is important to make an informed choice when we do so. Immigration changes reported in mainstream press The recent announced changes in Canadian Citizenship have found their way into the mainstream press. Staff writer Carol Sanders wrote a piece in the Winnipeg Free Press (July 2, 2015) entitled “Immigration changes herald caste system: critics.” The significance of the article is that its intended audience is mainstream society, and not confined to primarily expatriate readers originally from the Philippines. The changes touch all Canadians not just communities of newcomers to the country.

The concerns raised are not new. A Toronto Star article in 2014 summarized the changes as “Canada’s immigration system undergoing quiet, ugly revolution.” The observation covered the new residency requirement of four years for citizenship and the new requirement for applicants up to

age 64 to write a skill test and the dramatic change in processing fees for adult applicants from $200 to $630 in just over two years. There is no question that the changes are here and that for applicants the characterization of “ugly” is not undeserved.

The Free Press article interviewed community members such as my friend Diwa Marcelino who described the increased fee of $630 as a “luxury” and wondered why the government is creating financial barriers preventing permanent residents from becoming Canadian citizens. “This October, people might not be able to vote because they’re still saving up for their (citizenship) application fees,” Marcelino concluded.

Tom Denton, Executive Director of Hospitality House Refugee Ministry, echoed these sentiments. “Under the guise of

protecting Canadian citizenship, the Harper government has made it harder to get – harder to qualify and more expensive,” he said.

“It will definitely be detrimental for our refugee immigrants (and) create an underclass of noncitizens.” Denton’s conclusions are something many of us have echoed: “The previous rules worked in the past. Why are we making it tougher now, raising the drawbridge?”

Another strong critic of the move towards a more restrictive citizenship process is Thomas Novak, with the Migrant Worker Solidarity Network, who noted, “once upon a time, if you were good enough to work here, you were good enough to raise your family here and eventually became a citizen.”

“Eventually” has now been changed from three to four years residency, minimum residency per annum 183 days, English or French language requirement, change in testing required age

date to 64 from 55 and a massive increase in the application fee.

“Under current immigration policy, we are moving to becoming a society of castes, with a shrinking number of citizens with full right rights and an increasing number of temporary workers with no rights,” Nowak said.

In 2014 an estimated 10,000 Manitobans took their citizenship.

What about the impact of enhanced requirements such as tougher tests, increase in years of residency by one, basic residency of 183 per annum, removal of the one year credit for overseas foreign workers and international students who have been inside the country for years, and the tripling of processing fees? The impact may not visible within the current operational year because of the delays in processing applications already in the cue, but the critics are probably correct when they say the total number will drop.

On the other side of the coin

we have Minister Alexander who has been telling us about efficiencies in the system and quicker processing time. Well, based on the observations of the critics, quicker times for whom and at what cost to us all? Did we as a society need the citizenship process to become more costly, more restrictive? I always thought that one mark of a democratic society was in giving all members equal opportunity under the law.

We should be making it easier for newcomers to qualify for all the rights and privileges of full Canadian Citizenship not set up more barriers to restrict their admission: Eh! The six psychological needs that make humans tick At any given time, one or two of the following needs can dominate the others. When we overdose on one we transfer over to another need. This is psychological spill over. It is when fear and scarcity sets into your business, career or life. The opposite of this of course would be love and abundance. These needs are non-negotiable and the acquisition of them is a conscious priority.

The following needs are the internal motivators that influence human beings on a subconscious level. Let’s take stock of them now.

1. Certainty Code: Security and stability swaddles the masses.

These qualified Filipino students were allowed by the Pensionado Act of 1903 (http://goo.gl/ UOTk9l) to take college degrees within the United States until 1931 when it was repealed, amid domestic turmoil resulting from the Depression. Why this Filipino decided to move north to Canada is unclear; perhaps he found better work opportunities. Beyond this, though, we just can’t be certain.

So what does this tell us about Filipinos in Canada and about Canadian immigration during this time? Foremost, I think this

to complacency. Nonetheless, many live blissfully inside the realm of security and live healthy lifestyles.

2. Uncertainty Code: Variety is the spice of life. This is the opposite of certainty. The sidebar to uncertainty is fear, change and chaos. The adventure however, with the uncertainty code, is the search for entertainment and the human need to satisfy spontaneity.

3. Significance: The need to be noticed. The desire for superiority.

The swelling of self-interest.

The pursuit for importance. The attention towards achievement and the debilitation that rejection brings. The human need for significance is a stronghold that is easily invaded. Significance

is a fortress handmade by the human consciousness and carries with it the weight of the world’s criticism. Those that can inherit significance in their business, job or life learn a valuable insight; that being, significance is greater than success.

4. Love Connection: The greatest human need out of faith, hope and love is love. Love connection is a community in unity. Love is passion in action. It is unabashed and unconditional.

With it, the human needs can go forward and are glued together.

5. Growth: Growth and development are a prerequisite for the ideal lifestyle design.

Those not growing are dying. If a human being is not growing, ultimately, they’re plateauing and unavoidably declining.

The environment falls flat for

those opposing growth and all encompassing for those seeking purposeful improvement.

6. Contribution: Altruism or the “unselfish positive regard for the well being of others,” is contribution at its finest. It is on the spectrum of selflessness, and compassion in action, i.e., not-for-profit initiatives and or charitable donations.

These are the blood, sweat and tears that take human beings from one place to a higher place. They make and break our every move.

Human behaviour is an extension of the psyche. To understand the inner workings of our core motivations means understanding higher language. Liberation is found when we discover that our human needs excite behaviour and when recognize this; we see that all things are simply learned

behaviour. What is learned can be unlearned and what we yearn for can be learned faster if it is funded by our root deep desires.

Business, Success & Money message Can we humans truly be in a position to help others if we are possessed by our need for self-preservation?

Unlikely!

There needs to be a healthy tugof-war between individualism and altruism, to overcome our selfishness, to gratify our basic needs so we can not only survive but thrive as a socially conscious person that empowers humanity.

type of information needs to be more widely known for, while one Filipino coming to Canada in 1924 may not re-write the history books, it does remind us that Canada was never a nation of three peoples: the Aboriginals, the French and the English. Chinese lived and worked along Canada’s West Coast in significant numbers well before the 1850s, challenging the numbers of Anglo-Saxon settlers when B.C. was established in 1858. South Asian and Japanese immigrants also lived in Canada much earlier than has been thought. And, as early as the 1920s and 1930s, there were Filipinos living in Canada. These Asian populations also lived with South and Eastern

Europeans, as well as Africandescended immigrants. Canada from its earliest days has relied on labour provided by migrants to survive and succeed. And being given citizenship has made the work these immigrants perform acts of civic duty, enriching and diversifying the dynamics of Canada’s citizenry.

Today, Filipinos are a major demographic segment of Canada’s population. Many are proud to call themselves Canadians and are proud of their Filipino heritage.

It is not well known the depths of Canada’s relationship to the Philippines, but Filipinos living in Canada should be aware that, as early as 1924, their kababayan have been working to improve

this country, and today Canada is better because of it.

The next worst thing to absenteeism When employees come to work in spite of an illness or they show up for work despite the extreme pressures or stress of family life, they are not giving themselves sufficient time to get better. While they are present at work, their performance has a high probability of fading. These are the attributes of “presenteeism” and it can impact a workplace just as sickness or absence can in terms of productivity and performance.

What is presenteeism? When people show up for work sick, stressed, injured or burnt out while not productively engaged in work, this problem is called “presenteeism.”

According to a survey of employees, employers and physicians by Morneau Shepell, more than half of Canadian employees view presenteeism as a serious issue in the workplace.

Eight out of 10 employee respondents self-reported having practiced presenteeism, with 81 per cent reporting they have attended work while they were not able to perform as well as they would have liked. The survey of 1,005 employees (including 104 physicians) and 100 employers found that when the respondents

were asked why, 47 per cent indicated physical sickness was a contributing factor, followed closely by stress or anxiety (40 per cent). Almost 22 per cent, or one in four, blamed issues with their work/workplace or co-workers/managers and 15 per cent specified depression.

Employees are more likely to see presenteeism as a serious issue than employers. Fifty three per cent of employees indicated presenteeism is a serious issue in their workplace, versus 32 per cent of employers.

Paula Allen, VP of Resource and Integrative Solutions at Morneau Shepell stated after the study, “We’re hoping that it will be a bit of a wakeup call to employers. It might not be easy for an employer to assess, but employees felt pretty clear that they could see when it was happening. When measuring presenteeism, accidents, errors, missed deadlines, and having to redo things were all indicators of inattentive employees.”

“Both presenteeism and absenteeism can contribute to increased risk of accidents,” said Allen. With absenteeism, co-workers might be expected to do extra work to compensate

for the missing employee, which can lead to fatigue, overtime hours or skipped breaks. Contract workers, who are generally less trained, may also be hired to replace absent workers. “All of those things, I think you can see, increase the possibility of accidents.”

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, presenteeism is most common in people with children, lower waged workers, employees with poor health status and those who have difficulties setting limits when confronted with excessive demands. Some of the reasons employees use to justify presenteeism include not being able to afford to take the day off; no back-up plan for tasks the individual is responsible for;

there would be even more to do if they do not show up for work; committed to personally attending meetings or events; and concerned about job insecurity related to downsizing or restructuring.

Among other significant findings in the report, 56 per cent of employees were not aware of their organization offering employee-assistance programs and 43 per cent indicated that their organizations did not create an environment that supported mental wellness on the job.

The colour blue: starting the feng shui flow of wealth When you want to stimulate more money and income, making sure you incorporate the colour blue in your life. From your home to your clothing and jewellery, blue colours bring beautiful water energy into your home, and more income into your life.

When you think about some of the world’s most expensive real estate, it almost always comes with views of water. That’s because water brings prosperity, from our most ancient beginnings to today.

Water creates wealth and when you’re truly interested in improving your financial footing, it’s water that will make the difference!

All water is not created equal though.

Some water is light, pale and sun-drenched, some water is turquoise or cornflower blue and begs you to dive in, and some water is thousands of feet deep and so dark you can’t see a hand in front of your face.

The same is true with water in feng shui.

Water is the element associated with career, job and business opportunities – and generating more income. Water is considered yin in nature because it takes things inward (think of a stone thrown in a pond) and falls downward. In feng shui, water is also considered to be a danger. If you’ve ever witnessed a flood or a hydroelectric dam, you know the awesome power water yields.

Yet of all the elements of fire, metal, wood, and earth, it’s water that has the greatest power to create wealth.

That’s why water’s associated colour, blue, is so critical – even more so than black, the more common feng shui colour for water. Few people have ever witnessed water so dark that it’s black, but most everyone has seen water that’s blue.

Your association with an element is more powerful when it’s relevant to you.

The colour blue and its associated element, water, are symbolic of the New Moon, when the moon is dark. It’s at the time the moon is new that seeds planted have the greatest chance of occurring. This makes the Chinese New Year so important – because it coincides with the first New Moon of the year.

Blue wallets and purses are best in some years.

Most years, red is the colour for wallets and purses. However, the rabbit, is a springtime animal and wood-element animal sign that is enhanced by blue colours. Blue colours also enhance dragons and snakes. That makes it helpful to carry a blue wallet and purse. This can be especially helpful if you’re

Blue for promotion, love, and fame.

Wherever the annual 4 Star visits, that’s the spot to add blue. Blue colours are a perfect stimulator – but they don’t “overstimulate” the 4 Star, which could lead to infidelity. Instead, use blue colours and accents versus real water. This will help you get recognition, especially if you speak or write for a living or if you are a student. It will also help singles in search of romance attract a love interest. For those who are married, the blue colour will help to feed their romantic inclinations without over-stimulating the four star so as to invite a third party to the romance. involving a Canadian company and its Philippines partner.” Amy Mills, a spokesperson for Foreign Affairs said in an e-mail last March, “The embassy engaged the government of the Philippines and its appropriate agencies to actively seek to assist and resolve it in keeping with the spirit of collaboration and co-operation that characterizes our countries’ relations.

The controversy began when Chronic Inc., a plastics exporter based in Whitby, Ontario, shipped containers to the Philippines in the spring and summer of 2013.

The containers were supposedly filled with recyclable plastics from Vancouver destined for the company’s 150-worker plant in

Valenzuela City where it would be sorted and sold.

But upon arrival and inspection in Manila, the Bureau of Customs found containers filled with stinking household garbage, including used adult diapers and kitchen waste. At the time, the bureau said the material could “pose biohazard risks” and impounded the shipment.

A Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) analysis of samples from three containers, reported on November 10, 2014, found the contents consisted of “municipal solid waste or garbage… which cannot be recycled…” and recommended a final disposal.

Whether toxic or not, it is

illegal to ship hazardous waste internationally, except in special circumstances, under the Basel Convention, to which Canada and the Philippines are signatories.

Jim Markris, owner of Chronic Inc., spoke to the Toronto Star in February 2014 and denied shipping trash to the Philippines, insisting that it wouldn’t be possible for such waste to get into his shipments, which are also inspected before they leave Canada.

“Anyone with a brain,” said Makris, could see that it makes no sense to ship garbage overseas.

It costs $40 per tonne to dump garbage in Canada, but $80 per tonne to ship his recycling material to the Philippines, he said.

containers from Chronic Inc. was passed through customs without a problem, said Markris, however, he suspects someone along the chain of delivery wanted to be paid off before the second shipment would be allowed through. “It’s doing business overseas, and I think that’s the biggest problem,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tarlac Governor Victor Yap asked the Metro Clark Waste Management Corp. on July 13, 2015 to suspend the disposal of the trash apparently illegally imported from Canada. He said he would only allow the resumption of the disposal if the company could present a certification from the DENR explaining the nature of the wastes.

Turning the page In the book of life, the chapter on high school holds a special place for many. Often bookmarked for future reflection, it’s a time that sees a number of milestones from adolescence to young adulthood.

Changes and challenges, good or bad, they are all a part of the big story.

During this season of sentimentality, I was lucky enough to meet many bright young minds who were reaching the end of this chapter in their lives. For a moment I was brought out of my jaded self and was excited by seeing such promise and potential.

I am thankful to have been a part of the deliberation team for ANAK’s scholarship program this year.

Now in its ninth year since inception, the ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence has been awarding high school graduates in our community. A scholarship program created by Filipino-Canadian youth for Filipino-Canadian youth, in an effort to preserve and promote Philippine heritage and support the pursuit of postsecondary studies. As volunteers, we commit to fundraising for these scholarships and each year we make the difficult decision of who to award our limited funds.

This year was no exception and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who applied. We look forward to learning how your futures unfold and hope to stay connected.

In the end, ANAK awarded two scholarship recipients this past June: Michael Guevarra (Maples Collegiate) and Rodell Salonga (St. Paul’s High School).

Each received a $500 scholarship, which they will be using towards their post-secondary studies at the University of Manitoba.

Honourable mentions were also awarded to Maria Josellee Dabalos (Fort Richmond Collegiate) and Alroy Nonato (Sisler High School). In addition, ANAK also awarded its annual Citizenship Book Award to Kristine Velasco (Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute) for her active participation and volunteerism during the ANAK Kapatid In-School Mentorship Program.

Start ‘em young It was another great race day for athletes and weekend warriors of all types and ages! The Second Kildonan Park Family Duathlon was successfully held on July 5, 2015. The goal of this event is to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle through duathlon and triathlon multi-sports. Being a family-oriented race, the event is open to everybody; children ages five and up, and adults of all ages.

The race event consisted of two events, Short Distance (1K run / 2K bike / 1K run) and Medium Distance (2K run / 4K bike / 2K run) inside Kildonan Park, which has minimal vehicle traffic on early Sunday mornings.

The run course is a 500m out-and-back route in between the two parking lots of Rainbow Stage and the Peguis Pavilion.

While the bike course is a counterclockwise two-kilometre loop around the main park road. For each discipline, Short Distance athletes did one lap while the Medium Distance athletes did two laps.

The centre of the event was the Rainbow Stage parking lot where the finish/start arch, transition zones, aid station, registration desk, bike mechanic station, and sponsors tents were all located.

Some 120 people participated as athletes, parents, volunteers and sponsors. The event was capped with a wind-up barbecue picnic to thank all the supporters.

Ethel Fernandez, mom of six-year-old athlete Eli, proudly exclaimed, “Eli just recently learned how to ride a bike and is not a big fan of running, so I’m a bit worried that he may not complete the race. But he did!

Watching him cross that finish line with a big smile on his face and the crowd cheering him on,

made me the proudest mom at that time!”

Joanna Ocampo-Flores, who was also a volunteer last year, said, “I volunteered because it was all for a great and worthwhile cause. Nabawi lahat ng pagod namin ng kasayahan ng mga pamilyang nag-participate.”

Race Director Dennis Flores, who’s also a sitting director of Triathlon Manitoba, announced, “We have noted items that we need to improve and we will definitely come up with a better and bigger race next year!”

APO Fishing Derby, Selkirk Park, June 27 The Alpha Phi Omega Manitoba Alumni Association (APOMBAA) held its annual fishing derby in Selkirk Park on Saturday, June 27, 2015. Despite a forecast of thunder and lightning, the event was well supported by friends, family, co-workers, and enthusiastic anglers from Winnipeg and Steinbach. Visiting APO brothers and sisters, including their families from Saskatoon and Regina also made the event special.

Thirty-six participants battled it out for three long hours with a “catch and release” competition format for the longest silver bass.

This year’s annual fishing derby has set new milestones for the organizers. Aside from having a higher number of participants than last year, 29 silver bass were caught during this year’s competition. Several business enterprises sponsored the derby, providing valuable prizes.

The event was very competitive from the get go. Several anglers were prolific in catching the trophy fish during the competition. It was a delight to watch Rudy Regalado and Vic Guarin, both catching four trophy fish and Randy Santiago netting three. The event intesified when two fishermen caught the same length of the longest trophy fish but through gentlemanly conduct, the longest silver fish was awarded to Vic Guarin. The longest fish was measured at 24 inches.

A special prize was also given to Joey Borja for catching the shortest trophy fish at 11 inches. A second prize package was handed to Randy Santiago, who caught one at 24 inches but a couple of minutes later than Vic Guarin. The event ended with the awarding of prizes to the winners, drawing of tickets for prize giveaways, and enjoying the prepared lunch meal.

Bagama’t hindi ito ipinipilit na yakapin na lamang agad ng mga konserbatibong pananaw ng marami pa ring bansa at sektor ay nagbubukas naman ito ng pagkakataon upang pantay nating tanggapin ang tao bilang tao – regardless ng kanilang sexual orientation.

Valid ang tanong na ito. Kaya lang, sa palagay ko, hindi dapat nagmamadali. Napakarami pang mga pagbabago at pagmumulat ang dapat matutunan ng mga Pilipino bago mo isubo ang ganitong uri ng batas. The husband-and-wife power team, Todd and Katya Labelle of Todd Labelle Promotions (TLP), has done it again.

With their business tag line of “bringing the biggest Filipino stars,” the team definitely brought their best with the Greatest Love Songs concert, on July 5th, at the Club Regent Event Centre.

For those who have not yet met the TLP team, they have brought artists such as Bamboo, Kim Chiu, Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo, to name a few.

Their events have become bigger and they have really put thought into the details that go into their shows. This time around, TLP partnered with Justin Merluza of Just_In Couture to design a luxury lounge specifically for sponsors and media partners of the event. This gave sponsors an opportunity to mingle and meet each other before the show.

TLP also took the time to launch their new event – an all-star basketball game between a local team (whoever will win a local tournament) and a team of Star Magic talents including Enrique Gil, Xian Lim, and Rayver Cruz.

The show itself went without a hitch. Opening acts Julian Arcega, Oishly Alcid, and World Championship of Performing Arts finalist Paul Ong warmed up the full venue with power ballads and jazz hits.

Angeline Quinto and Erik Santos both sang medleys of their hit songs, particularly theme songs to many teleserye (telenovela soap operas) and films. There was an audience participation part where two audience members got to fulfill their dreams of sharing a stage with the two artists. Singers James Cruzat and Hannah Sagaral took the initiative to get the attention of the two celebrities, and they wowed both the crowd and the stars with their impromptu duet of Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang? The crowd also went wild as both Quinto and Santos made their way through the crowd during separate sets.

The evening saw a lot of laughter as our community interacted with the stars, often causing them both to pause and laugh – and to also play along with their audience. There was definitely a strong playful personality that shone through the audience at the event. There was also a sense of support, as the seats were filled with various sponsors, businesses, organizations, and community members all attending an event in support for TLP Promotions.

Thank you, and congratulations once again to the team behind Todd Labelle Promotions. We can’t wait to attend the next event!
