The problem with fake news The problem with fake news is who gets to define it. Is it government? The media? The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)? Should we be democratic about it and put it to a vote? As I see it, none of these options is viable. 1. Government, of course, must not be allowed to define any news as fake. The 1987 Constitution expressly prohibits it: No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances. (Section 4, Article III, the Bill of Rights) This is because for all the controversy and anger surrounding fake news, it is still protected by the Constitution. In a democracy, anyone can say anything he or she wants; the only caveat is that one must be ready to face the consequences, whether it be a word war or, worse, a libel case (the Philippines is one of the few countries where libel is a criminal offense and can earn one prison time). The problem with fake news is that we have to include it in the list of protected speech. We can’t fight for our right to, say, criticize government and at the same time seek to curtail the right of others to say what they want, even if we
don’t agree with them or even believe what they say. The two are the same rights, and they both have to be protected at all cost. 2. The media, while they may seem like a good candidate, must be disqualified from defining fake news. We know that there are many honest, upright, and hard working journalists, but the media themselves are one huge industry that ultimately protects the interests of the owners. A recent example of this the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s obvious bias against Gina Lopez, who openly fought mining companies during her abbreviated time as Environment Secretary. From using double entendres (“Gina calls for review of mining law” — a lewd heading that has since been changed online to “DENR chief calls for review…”) to describing her cancelation of 75 mining contracts a “massacre” to positively rejoicing when the Commission on Appointments rejected her (“CA REJECTS GINA LOPEZ; MINING STOCKS JUMP”), the Inquirer never even attempted to hide its dislike for Lopez. The reason? Inquirer president Sandy Prieto is married to Benjamin Philip Romualdez, president of the Chamber of Mines. Romualdez is also the CEO of Benguet Corp., one of the many mining companies suspended by Lopez. I could go on about other
media companies, but you get the drift. But now, an industry that can be so biased has taken it upon itself to “help” Filipinos block fake news on Facebook. The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) earlier in June actually released a plug-in for Google Chrome that “blocks articles from fake news sites on your Facebook newsfeed.” Fakeblok “grays out Facebook posts from fake news sites that are on the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR)’s list.” In other words, journalists in the Philippines, who are supposed to be the vanguard of freedom of expression, want to filter and censor the information available to Filipinos. 3. I included the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) because a few days ago it came out with a pastoral letter urging Catholics to stop spreading fake news, as it is “a sin against charity.” I have no problem with this because it is certainly within its duties to warn its followers about what it feels are evil. But the CBCP happened to include my outfit, MindaNation.com, in its list of fake news sites, and I have to say that this shows how little it actually studied the matter before releasing its list. Mindanation is a legitimate news/feature/opinion website that is recognized by the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) and, not least, by the almost half-
million followers we have on social media. We have never ever released any fake news; each news article is vetted and reviewed to make sure they stand up to scrutiny. What we do have are strong opinions by our columnists, but columns are not news, so they can never be fake. Apparently, however, the CBCP also defines strong opinion as fake news. So if government, the media, and the CBCP cannot define what fake news is, then who can? The answer is simple: No one. I believe in a free market of ideas, one where all forms of speech and expression are allowed. That scenario will naturally attract fakers and even lunatics, but we have to let them in. It is the people who will decide what they want to believe in. While the traditional media make a fuss about how many people fall for fake news, I think the reality on the ground is far different — and much more positive. I still have faith in the intellect of the Filipino people, and I believe they know what they can and cannot trust. The views and opinions expressed in this column are those of the original author, and do not necessarily represent those of the Pilipino Express publishers. Marrying two cultures
Proud to be Filipino-Canadian
I grew up in a home greatly influenced by two cultures. I was raised in a first generation Filipino-Canadian family. Both my mother and father left the Philippines and their parents to start a new life in Canada and my three younger siblings and I were all born in Winnipeg. As was the case with many families in the 1980s and 90s, there were limited supports. Both my parents worked full time and the work culture at the time allowed many to work evening and night shifts, so my dad worked during the day and my mom left for her evening shift soon after. They did what they had to do to support their family, even if it meant that my mother would not see us kids much throughout the week. Nonetheless, the importance of family was an overarching theme throughout my childhood and definitely shaped my sense of responsibility and strong work ethic. My mom and
dad consistently emphasized that doing well in school was mandatory. Not only was this out of love for us, but also I am sure that they wanted to see that their own personal sacrifice of leaving the only home they knew was worth the hardship. Growing up, I often struggled with the two cultures colliding. There comes a point when children and teens start to become greatly influenced by their peers and I felt caught in the middle between two sets of values. I wanted to be more independent in my decisions, but the Filipino culture is more collectivistic; meaning that the needs of the family or community come before any individual needs. For example, I wanted to hang out with my friends more, but I knew that there were responsibilities waiting for me at home. Through my schooling and the influence of Canadian society and the media, I identified more
as Canadian, all the way up to being a young adult. Looking back, I think that this is necessary when you are working towards establishing a career. Canada is a wonderful place of academic and employment opportunities, and I felt that Western values certainly shaped my sense of identity. Interestingly enough, since I got married and started raising my own kids, I’ve adopted Filipino values more and more into my way of thinking, emphasizing the importance of family, respect, and being there for each other. The essence of Filipino family culture can be a powerful antidote for some of Western society’s standards and expectations nowadays. Westerners often buy what isn’t needed in order to feel better. We don’t see our families because we are busy working. We eat more junk food to comfort ourselves, and we do not stop to rest and enjoy being in the here-and-now. Others around
us are seen as competition, and we see ourselves as “not good enough.” When we see ourselves as part of a bigger family unit or community, we naturally develop a sense of meaning and purpose. This lessens the likelihood of depression and anxiety, which is becoming more and more common in Canada. So what does being FilipinoCanadian mean to me now? I think that it is about benefiting from two beautiful but different cultures, knowing the strengths and wonderful qualities of both, and marrying them into my own sense of identity and set of values. For example, my husband and I have strict standards for respect and hard work with our kids, but we also tell them why it’s important, so that they in turn feel valued and respected by us. After a long day at work, we try to spend time with them reading and See CHERYL p5

CHERYL... From page 4 playing, without the distraction of electronics or household chores. When they talk to us about something serious, we sit down and look them in the eye and have a real conversation. Communication and maintaining trust with children nowadays is so important. I am far from being a perfect parent and I make a lot of mistakes, but I keep trying because it’s about my family now, not about me as an individual. I certainly have my parents, extended family, and Filipino community to thank for their influence, as well as the positive qualities of the Canadian culture. Happy Canada Day everyone! As our nation turns 150, let’s take a moment to think about our roots, be thankful for the present, and dream for our futures. Let’s stand up and be proud! Highlights of Canadian labour history Canada has come a long way in establishing the labour industry within the past 150 years as it made countless improvements in every worker’s everyday life. Historically, Canada fought long and hard for the rights of all workers today including the development of employment standards, the formation of unions, protection from harassment and discrimination as well as the introduction of parental leave to name a few. The fight for a shorter workweek in 1872 The early beginnings of Canadian labour industry began with the fight for a shorter workweek in 1872. It started when the Toronto Typographical Union demanded a nine-hour workday from the city’s publishers. The employers refused and workers
walked off the job on March 25, 1872. Union activity at that time was a criminal act, and the Toronto Globe publisher George brown had the strikers arrested. However, by April 18, 1872, Prime Minister John A. Macdonald introduced the Trade Union Act. Workers movements arose in the 1850’s, however it was the issue pertaining to the need for a shorter workweek in 1872 that triggered workers’ movements to convince more workers that joining unions would improve their lives. The Winnipeg general strike in 1919 After the First World War, there was a high unemployment rate. The soldiers returning from the war could not get their jobs back and workers wanted to earn enough to support their families’ needs in the changing economy.
On May 15, 1919, private and public sector workers in Winnipeg decided to walk off the job resulting in one of the largest labour actions that Canada has ever seen. However, on June 21, 1919, the strike ended with the infamous “Bloody Saturday” making the strike the largest general strike in Canadian history. The birth of Unemployment Insurance The introduction of Employment Insurance or EI dates back to the economic depression in 1929 – 1939 when young and unemployed men had to work in government camps under the Conservative government for measly pay. Mackenzie King’s Liberals legislated against the Conservative government to abolish the camps and workers eventually initiated a strike. Canada introduced unemployment insurance in 1940, making it the
last major Western country to adopt an unemployment insurance system. Maternity & parental benefits Did you know that prior to 1971 new mothers had to either quit their jobs or return to work quickly after having a baby? While the federal government initially introduced a limited 15 weeks of paid maternity leave in 1971 at 66 per cent of a mother’s previous salary, the unions did not take long to negotiate longer paid maternity leave with top up benefits. In addition, unions also negotiated guarantees that these women would go back to their jobs. Thereafter, other benefits such as adoption leave, paternity leave and parental leave were developed for either parent. These are just a few highlights from Canadian labour history, however, it shows that there is certainly a lot to be proud of. As
we celebrate the 150th birthday of Canada this year, may we also reflect on each and every challenge and success this great country has undertaken throughout the years to protect our rights in employment.” Sources http://canadianlabour.ca/whyunions/history-labour-canada This article is intended for information purposes only and not to be considered as professional advice. Questioning the project called Canada The coming of an anniversary not only presents opportunities for celebration, but also for reflection. Birthdays are times to reflect upon one’s accomplishments, goals for the future, and things in life to be grateful for. On wedding anniversaries we don’t only celebrate bonds of love and friendship, but reminisce about times past and times to come. Regardless of what we celebrate, we always take the time to pause and reflect, and so it is only fitting that we, as a country, should celebrate and reflect upon this nation in which we live. First and foremost, I think it is worthwhile to recognize that for many of Canada’s residents, this is not a celebration. For many of Canada’s indigenous populations, July 1st marks a 150 years of Canadian colonization, which replaced British and French colonization from the preceding centuries. This is not to “rain on the parade” of Canada Day celebrations. I believe in the value
of our country, the positive values we hold, and the attempts of Canadian society to work towards a more just and humane world. Yet we must also be aware, always, of what Canada means to all segments of Canadian society, and to accept that some do not accept it as much as others. A community is never complete, however, and as a national community Canada must continually work towards building relationships and friendships, and this can begin with honouring the promises of the Canadian government to its indigenous populations. Second – and this is a question that has consumed me for years – is to think about what does it actually mean to be Canadian? Beyond legal status and classifications, what does it mean to be Canadian? What does it mean to be unCanadian? There is a disturbing trend in Canada where xenophobic, racist, “alt-right” white supremacist groups are on the rise. One iniquitous group, going by the name “Soldiers of Odin,”
has claimed to be an innocent organization interested in keeping city streets safe (http://www.cbc.ca/ news/canada/saskatoon/soldiersof-odin-canada-community-groupwatch-1.3761178), but continue to share the name of an organization branded by the Anti-Defamation League of the United States as a group with strong ties to white supremacy. (This is, as an aside, deeply ironic, as the Norse god Odin was not a white supremacist, and, in fact, cared and loved all of humanity.) The existence of these groups points to an often unspoken conception that Canada is, somehow, a “White” country. If this is so, it is only because it has been white, often male, Europeandescended inhabitants (that is, colonizers) who have seized power over others and dominated the national discourse. We’ve already discussed the indigenous populations, which lived in what is now called Canada for centuries before others arrived. Since before Canada was a country, it was home to many ethnocultural groups. African Americans often crossed the border into Canada, especially in the final years of slavery in the United States; following the abolition of slavery, many more moved north, working on Canada’s growing railways as porters. Asian populations, too, have long lived and worked in Canada, something that I’ve written on in the past. Indeed, Alexander Mackenzie reported that Filipinos were working along Canada’s west coast as early as the 1790s. These people were contributing to the construction of a robust economy that would drive the creation of the province of British Columbia in
1858. Even then, while attempting to portray the province as an outpost of white, British society, Caucasians were by no means the majority group. Third, and finally, it bears considering what events in our nation’s history we remember. History, as I try to impart upon my students each term, is not merely a recollection of the past, a laundry list of past events, people, and dates. Certainly, these facts make up the foundation of what we call history, but if that were all it was, it would be too boring to bother with. No, history is the retelling of the past, the selection of narratives, stories, and themes that people construct. This is why, during Canada 150, the Canadian government celebrates a century and a half of progress and growth, while Canada’s indigenous peoples remember the centuries of colonialism they continue to endure. Different groups reconstruct – that is, remember – the past in different ways. What we remember and how we tell our history says a lot about us. So, when the popular national narrative of Canada’s early history discusses things such as the fur trade, or the exploration of the Northwest Passage, or the “Conquest” of the 1760s, or the Battle at Vimy Ridge – who is included in that narrative? The Winnipeg General Strike of 1912 sent shockwaves across Canada, and set off a series of changes that would greatly improve the lives of Canada’s working class; and yet, somehow this often fails to find expression in popular memory. Most of the popular events in Canadian history – especially Canada’s early history – deal with white, European descended
Canadians. What about the others? Were they non-contributing members of society? Were they passive beings whose lives left no impact on history? Certainly not, but popular memory chooses to forget that. In my high school Canadian history class, the only mention I heard of Chinese in Canada was that they helped build Canada’s national railway, and those who died in the work were unceremoniously buried under the tracks. What kind of a narrative is that? Certainly not one that celebrates the ingenuity of Chinese in Canada, of the fact that, even though legislation and popular sentiment discriminated against them, Chinese migrated across Canada, establishing communities and successful businesses. What we remember, what histories we tell, have effects, and can either include or exclude people in those stories. As a country, we need to open up our national narrative, and give space to the many groups who contributed to what we now call Canada. Canada 150 is certainly a time for celebration. There is a lot about Canadian society to be proud of, and I believe in the potential of our nation and society. Yet a nation is an ongoing project, one that always needs tending and mending. We all contribute to this, both in remembering and retelling the past, but also crafting the future along lines that are inclusive of all inhabitants and the variety of experiences that they bring to Canada. Bill C-6 receives royal assent The day is coming when many of the changes the former Conservative government made to the Citizenship Act will be rolled back. For changes in the Canadian Citizenship Act, Bill C-6 has received royal assent on June 19, 2017. There is cause for celebration in many households across the land but also a word of caution because the changes will be implemented in stages. This long process was necessary because the Act had to be amended and this can only be accomplished by passage through parliament, the senate and finally royal assent to the changes. In terms of citizenship law, all things start with the Citizenship Act. The changes to be introduced as a result of the passage of Bill C-6 include:
Effective immediately • Dual citizens convicted of treason, spying and terrorism offences will continue to face the Canadian justice system but not face revocation of their citizenship status; • Applicants no longer must indicate an intention to live in Canada once citizenship is granted; • Certain minor-aged children can now apply for citizenship as age requirements under subsection 5 (1) of the Act have been waived; • Individuals serving conditional sentences will not be granted citizenship, take an Oath of Citizenship or be able to count time of incarceration to meet residency requirement; • “Statelessness” has been added as “a stand-alone ground
that can be considered for a discretionary grant of citizenship;” • The allowance for “reasonable measures” for disabled applicants is now included in the Act; and • The above mentioned changes affect all applications, including those received before June 11, 2015, Changes expected by fall 2017 • Applicants must be “physically present in Canada” for three out of the past five years (residency requirement); • Applicants must file Canadian income taxes, if required under the Income Tax Act, for three out of the last five years, matching their residency; • Applicants, who were present in Canada, as temporary residents or protected persons, can claim one half day for every full day up to a maximum of 365 days towards the
residency requirement; and • Applicants between the age of 18 and 54 must meet “language and knowledge requirements;” Changes expected by early 2018 • The federal court will be final arbitrator in all revocation of citizenship cases unless the affected person requests the Minister make the decision; and • Clear authority is given citizenship officers to “seize fraudulent or suspect fraudulent documents.” The changes are welcome by many and restore balance, integrity and a sense of humanity to the Act. The current government has earned the right to proudly proclaim Bill C-6 as law. “Canada’s identity has always been shaped by the significant economic, cultural and social contributions of immigrants,” explained the Honourable Ahmed
Hussen, Minister of Immigration. “Changes to the Citizenship Act will enhance program integrity, while giving more flexibility to eligible applicants to meet the requirements for citizenship so that they can continue building successful lives in Canada.” The Minister’s goals are lofty and the royal assent to Bill C-6 is a move in the right direction. Happy Canada Day to all. We are all Canucks What does it mean to be Canadian? Gosh, where do you even begin? First off, Happy 150th birthday to the greatest country in the world! Second, I am humbled by, and extremely proud of the country in which we live. It was 1974 when my parents, Abelardo and Corazon, along with my sister Bernadette, made the long journey across the globe to their new home. I can’t even imagine what was going through their heads at the time. They had never visited before the move and had only heard stories through my Ninang Lou, who came to Canada as a nurse. The Philippines is a small country compared to Canada, but only in terms of geographical size. In terms of population, well, in Metro Manila alone I’ve heard that there are 13 million. That’s almost half of the population here in Canada! As a country, The Philippines has approximately 100 million! These facts you already know, but let me share this little tidbit, just in case you didn’t know. A few years ago, a news outlet reported that Tagalog was the second most
spoken mother-tongue language in Manitoba! And this is but one example of why Canada is so great. With open arms, this country has welcomed generations of Pinoys. Now, we’ve embraced our Syrian newcomers who wanted to flee their war-torn country. We welcome everyone – much to the chagrin of the country to the south. Diversity is what we are known for. We embrace multiculturalism. You speak another language? No problem! You want to wear traditional clothing? That’s fine with us! I grew up in the Maples in a time when the majority of residents came from European countries. Now? Well, I like to call it “Little Manila.” You walk into Superstore on McPhillips and when you look around, you could easily assume you are in a market back home. Looking back now, the diversity found across Winnipeg is very typical of what you would find in big cities across the country. You wouldn’t be surprised if you bumped into a German, Italian, Sikh, someone from the MiddleEast, or a Filipino on a walk through Garden City or Polo Park.
Canada has got diversity, sure, but what else do we have? Well, we are the birthplace of basketball, our national sport is not hockey surprisingly, but is lacrosse. We’ve got the Blue Jays, the Blue Bombers and Blue Rodeo. Celebrities? We got them too. We have the Ryans (Gosling and Reynolds), Justin Beiber (not sure if we’re really proud of this one – jury is still out), William Shatner, Celine Dion and Drake. The list goes on and on. And what about something we like to dangle in front of the Americans, something we call Universal Healthcare. Yeah, that’s a big one. You having a baby? No you won’t get a bill for $30,000. You need surgery? Let’s book you in, while you wait, here’s some free Wifi to go along with no bill whatsoever. Sure, our dollar is in the crapper right now, but that is only when you compare it to the almighty American dollar. So guess what – stay home. We’ve got a lot of great things to see and do. For example, the Canadian Rockies. Banff, Jasper and everywhere in between offer adventure seekers and photographers a plethora of opportunities to try out their hobby. We are surrounded by three oceans. We have sub-zero temperatures and desert landscapes. In one day’s drive you may encounter whales,
Dale & Bernadette growing up in The Maples c.1977 moose, deer, and a lot of cows. We have Niagara Falls and cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver where people come from all over the world to visit. We are a true democracy where we all can have a voice. Our personal beliefs do not cause riots in the streets, but rather wholesome discussions with friends or people you don’t know while waiting at the bus stop. You want to own your own
home? Well, if you work hard enough, it’s possible. Unless you live in downtown Vancouver or Toronto, just forget about it. So what does it mean to be Canadian? I don’t know if I have a short answer for that, but I do know that I’m damn proud to be one. Thanks mom and dad. Dale is the Director of Communications for a school district in BC and continues to write from afar.

Canada, a land of endless opportunities Many people leave their homeland in search of a better life abroad. I am no different. Armed with a dogged determination, I arrived in Canada on August 1, 2000, with the help of my uncle Ruben and his family. Since then I have faced challenges in different aspects of my life. I have felt a gamut of emotions as I lived a new life and met different people in my new home country. I almost gave up at times, and planned to go back. But you know what? All the tears, fears and apprehensions were all worth it. Canada is a land of endless opportunities. Like a coin, there are no bends and corners to limit you, only a continuous flow of possibilities. This beautiful country takes care of its people on all fronts: free medical care, taxes that work for the residents, financial aid for families, seniors and students, a good business climate for entrepreneurs, reunification of families and friends, and most of all, this country embraces our cultural differences. Every Canadian is free to express his or her distinctive customs, views and ideas. This uniqueness is what makes Canada stand out in pride – a welcoming, beautiful mosaic of different people, working together as one. Happy 150th birthday, Canada! Thank you for the love. Home away from home “Welcome to Winnipeg” the pilot announced as the plane touched Canadian ground. This marked the start of a new chapter and exciting opportunities, accompanied by inevitable nerves for my family. To this day, my parents tell me that, although we were living a perfectly comfortable life back in the Philippines, moving to Canada has been nothing but a blessing for our family. I was only a mere toddler back then but “our family’s immigration story” was one of my highly requested bedtimes stories as a child. Let me share with you the condensed version of that story. It was near midnight on May 15, 1994 when my family found ourselves officially in the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport. “We were the last ones to leave the plane,” my mom recalls. Apparently my family was so excited that we landed safely at our destination that we
waited for all other passengers to leave the plane just so we could have solo pictures with the captain and fight attendants. We didn’t even get to descend on the famous “arrivals” escalator in the airport because we exited through the doors with the flight team! Way to make our entrance into Winnipeg! Just like anyone who makes a big life-changing decision, our family had a lot of adjustments to make in our early years of living here in Canada. One would have to find the strength to let go of the “comfort zone” in order to make room to explore new opportunities. My parents were both aware that their educational credentials from the Philippines would not be considered. For example, in the Philippines my father was an accountant and my mom was a teacher but their first jobs in Canada were in housekeeping (dad) and at a fast-food chain (mom). “We had to do what we
Toddler Yvanne and her Ate A-yen at the Winnipeg International Airport, May 15, 1994 to do,” my dad would say. In addition to my parents working, all three of my siblings also worked. Looking back now, I can proudly say that it was truly a team effort that enabled our family to survive those early years. Although there were some adjustment challenges in the early years, it was also a very exciting time. For example, since there’s no winter season in the Philippines, my family’s first few winters were incredibly thrilling! Snowfall was nothing but beautiful to us back then and the cold felt like an outdoor “aircon.” However, it didn’t take long until our reaction to winter turned from “Wow!” to “No!” It’s amazing how many beautiful and funny memories can be shared during these times. When I look back now, 23 years later, I can join my parents in saying that our move to Canada was a great decision.
Young Yvanne enjoying the snow! Since God is truly good, I’m sure that no matter where we went He would have taken good care of us. However, I believe that everything happened according to His plan for our family. As the bunso (youngest child) of the family, I’m overjoyed to have witnessed the unfolding of God’s plan for my family members. Because of this move both my parents are happily retired, all my sisters have stable full-time jobs that bring them happiness, and finally our family has almost tripled because my sisters have their own families now with beautiful kids. Although the Philippines will always be our home, Canada has quickly become a home away from home for my family. Here in Canada we have been welcomed with open arms and have been given amazing opportunities for personal growth. We continue to meet many wonderful people
and have grown to really love the community. Here in Canada, we were able to realize and pursue many of our dreams. On July 1, 2017 my family joins handin-hand with the community in celebrating the 150th birthday of this beautiful nation. Canada, I am incredibly grateful for you: Happy 150th birthday! Yvanne currently studies Independent Performance and Songwriting at Seneca College in Toronto, ON. Prior to Yvanne’s move, she completed a Business Administration degree (University of Winnipeg) and International Event and Wedding Planning Professional certificate (QC Career School). Above all, Yvanne is a big dreamer and is delighted to have the opportunity to share her thoughts and adventures. FLOR... From page 1 of colour ever elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly in 2007, and then the first person of ethnic background to be given a cabinet position. She is now the interim leader of the Manitoba provincial NDP Party, the official opposition. Marcelino immigrated to Canada with her husband, Orlando, under the assisted relative category in 1982. Their children are Malaya, Diwa, Mayon, Awit, and Lualhati and they have four grandchildren. “My husband and I decided to immigrate to Canada after realizing the political climate in the Philippines under martial law and the conjugal dictatorship was not the place where we wished to raise our young children,” said Marcelino. “In the late 70s and early 80s immigration in Canada was open so we took our chances.” Marcelino’s advice for new immigrants: “Strive to do your best and be prepared to work triple or quadruple hard to prove your worth. Be honest and sincere in your work and dealings with others. Welcome the challenges and don’t be discouraged. Consider those challenges as opportunities to build your character. Have faith and hope.” Last year, Perla Javate, president of the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba (PHCM) was among the Top 25 Immigrants. Dr. Rey Pagtakhan also made the Top 25 Immigrant list in 2012. The RBC Top 25 Canadian
PILIPINO EXPRESS Immigrant Award winners will receive a commemorative plaque and a $500 donation will be made towards a registered Canadian charity of their choice. Winners will also be featured online at canadianimmigrant.ca/rbctop25 and in the July print edition of Canadian Immigrant magazine. Thanks from Flor Marcelino “I am humbled and honoured to learn that I was chosen as one of the recipients of RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Awards of 2017. I would like to dedicate this award to migrants and firstgeneration immigrants in Canada who are facing the pressures and insecurity that come with moving to a new place. To them I say honestly, work ethic and steadfast determination will pay off with a better life for them, their families and friends here in Canada and ‘back home.’ “I sincerely thank my nominator, Joanne Viviezca, Pilipino Express, family members and many friends. If I start naming them all, I most likely will miss some names. I made it to the Top 25 after being shortlisted to the Top 75 due to their encouragement and support. They have encouraged their wide network of contacts through social media to cast online votes for me. Maraming salamat po. “My husband Orli and I have been in Canada now for 35 years. It hasn’t always been an easy ride becoming a Filipino Canadian but it has always been a worthwhile journey. Canada is now our home. Here, we can
fight for our freedoms and values without being persecuted. Here, it’s a more even playing field. You don’t have to start out rich in order to be successful later on. Here we can provide a decent life for our families through hard work. Where we came from, hard work doesn’t always ensure that. “Success has a different definition for different folks. For me, success means getting up again after stumbling, after painful blows, after defeats. Success means making new friendships, maintaining old friendships and being a good friend. Success means devoting myself to the service of others. Success is hollow without seeing our families and our communities uplifted. “Once again, my deepest gratitude and appreciation for the support given me.”

Feng shui symbolism – how clutter reflects your life Everything in our life is in some way a reflection of our life. And by everything, I really mean every thing. Our stuff has a tremendous influence over us – our thoughts, our feelings, even our mental clarity, or lack of it, as evidenced by TV shows that portray hoarders. That’s because when hoarders over-accumulate; the hoarder no longer even sees the excess. What they see is an extension of themselves to the point they don’t see themselves any more: they are one with the clutter. That’s why it feels like they’re cutting off an arm to remove all the junk. While the majority of people aren’t hoarders – of animals or things – the majority of people do have a problem with clutter in one form or another and at varying degrees. Clutter has become a major feng shui focus in the past five or so years because it’s a source of stagnation. Even the word clutter is rooted in the word “clot.” According to an etymology dictionary the word clutter originated around the 1400’s and means, “to clot, collect in heaps and to litter.” Feng shui is a study of flow and when flow is stopped by a clot, especially in our veins, the formation of a clot can be life threatening. At its worst, clutter can overwhelm the people for whom clutter is out of control. At its best, clutter can be an annoyance. But most of us live somewhere in the middle – where clutter is concerned. Many times clutter is
representative of something in our lives; a symbolic representation of something that’s happened or where we are emotionally. A form of chiropractic medicine that I’ve used in the past is called Network Chiropractic. It uses very light touches on the spine to help release past injuries, whether they’re chemical, emotional, or physical. That’s because your spine is the repository of all that has happened to you. Network chiropractors believe that many illnesses and ailments are the accumulation of memories in the spinal network of nerves that are trapped, and that once released, the chronic physical condition can also be released. Because our homes are a larger extension of our bodies, one could say the same about our clutter: that it is a symbolic representation of our lives and that by releasing it, we can move forward in our lives. Could your clutter be saying something about your life? Below are some observations about clutter and what your stuff could be saying about you. Incomplete, unfinished items These represent parts of your life that are hanging in the balance, undone, and incomplete. If you have a number of unfinished items and see them frequently, it’s possible you feel like you’re not moving ahead in life and unable to bring important things to fruition. That’s because these items represent being stuck. By parting with unfinished objects, you can help bring completion to your life,
making your affairs smoother and less prone to getting hung up and remaining in limbo, and getting that unfinished business finally wrapped up. Broken items These kinds of items are symbolic of feeling incompetent, unloved and flawed. Keeping these kinds of objects represents the inner pain of the lack of selfworth. Holding on to broken objects represents all that’s wrong with you – even though that opinion is incorrect. You aren’t flawed and by removing flawed items from your life, you gain greater self worth and appreciation. Cast offs Is your home filled with cast offs? Then you’re living a cast off life. It’s like living your life through another person and not fully embracing your own life and your own feelings. It can often be rooted in feeling unnoticed, unworthy or of little value. If you buy lots of second hand items, you might want to ask yourself why you’re not good enough. I know someone who only buys used clothing and jewellery because she doesn’t think she’s worth the expense of new clothes and because her husband would be angry if she did. But she buys a lot of it and is overrun with used clothes and second-hand jewellery. I asked her to start buying only brand new clothes and to remove all the old clothes from her closet. Her husband also had not bought her an engagement ring and she suggested that for their anniversary they do so. Once she did this, her self-concept and self-image changed, and her husband’s attitude toward her changed as well. Sometimes the ripples we want in our lives must
be self-generated and radiate from the inner to the outer — not the other way around. Sources of Pain Holding on to items that are painful to you is selfflagellation and keeps you stuck in an emotional no-man’s land. Holding on to painful items dulls your emotions and enjoyment of life so that living becomes marking one emotionally numb day after the other. One woman I know had a particularly painful marriage. She and her husband went through many trying years in their relationship and the start of it began was their wedding. For that reason, her wedding dress was a source of pain and she cringed every time she opened the closet door and saw it. Fortunately, their relationship changed and they became very happy, but the dress was a reminder of the pain of their early relationship and while she was happy, she was still emotionally restrained. One day she decided to get rid of her wedding dress and once she did she said she felt like she was not only happier in her marriage but was finally able to move on from that painful time. Holding on to painful items
is like putting a bandage on a splinter instead of removing it. Remove the painful item and you can begin healing. Small things Too many itty-bitty things mean an itty-bitty life. If your clutter consists of lots of small things – especially small purchases – it means there’s nothing big or substantial in your life. Many people justify buying lots of trinkets because they don’t have the money for something big, like a house or a car. The irony is that frittering money on a collection of tiny things means you don’t have room for accumulating the kind of money to buy something big. Once you can stop buying and filling up your home all those little things, the big things can come into your life. Summer Slip: How to prevent learning loss A two-month summer break is very much welcomed by both students and educators – but the biggest challenge related to this time off is what some call “Summer Slip.” This slip is the result of the lack of daily routine and explicit learning and instruction. The hard work we do over 10 months, the content we learn, slips from our memory. Do you remember how to explain Bernoulli’s Principle and its role in helping an airplane with lift? Unless you work in the aerospace industry, you most likely don’t – although you most likely learned this at some point in your schooling.
We lose what we don’t practice often. While content is important, it’s the skills, mindset and process of learning that has been my focus in recent years with students. After all, content is all around us, but it’s the curiosity of the learner that drives the actual learning. If they learn how to find and observe interesting problems around them, they must also learn how to discover the answer. Parent Tip: No Telling! I feel as though I stress this almost every article I write. Don’t tell your children the answers to everything. Additionally, don’t answer all their questions with, “I
don’t know.” I know, I know. You’ll get asked seemingly a million questions each day. I’ll remind you that I have sixth graders. The amount of questions (and repeat questions) I get asked daily requires a lot of patience on my part. Learn to see questions not as a way for them to be lazy, but as a sign of their curiosity. Take the moment to teach over the summer, in the subtlest of ways. “What time is it?” “Why do worms come up after the rain? “Why is the sun still up at 9:00 pm.m in the summer?” The answer is steady: How could we find out? Not only does this teach them to find answers for themselves,
it also gives them strategies to find the solution. The fact that it’s their questions also fuels the importance of self-driven education. This is inquiry – they’re curious so they will naturally want to find out the answer. They just need our support. Be consistent. The more you do this, the more they get into the habit of learning answers over the summer. Again, the content they learn at school is important, but they need the foundation of being a learner to also see success in their education. Author’s note Thank you for following Year Three of Empowering Through Education. I will be using my summer break for my own
curiosity – exploring the world! You can follow my adventures on my travel blog, Judi Meets World (http://www.judimeetsworld. com).
Heart Evangelista showcases healthy figure in Hawaii She may be enjoying a beach break with husband, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero, in Hawaii. But that doesn’t mean that Heart Evangelista is about to let up on her gorgeous game one bit. On her Instagram account this past week, the actress could be seen relaxing in the sands of
Waikiki Beach with her politician hubby as they take a holiday from rainy Manila. Evangelista looked drop-dead sexy, despite opting for a onepiece swimsuit, as she showed plenty of her sunkissed skin to her followers, highlighting her flawless, tanned legs. Clearly feeling the laid-back
island vibes, she also was seen grinning as she paraded in outfits that were a mix of the standard blouse plus jeans, and floral dresses. ABS-CBN News

I am very thankful dahil ang dami talagang trusted projects that GMA has been giving me consistently na it forces me to stretch and grow not just as a person but as an actor trying to hone his craft.” Tom currently top bills the rom-com primetime series I Heart Davao together with Carla Abellana. The program, which premiered June 26, has already been receiving rave reviews on social media. “We are very happy to see the reactions ng mga tao na nasundan namin sa Internet right after. Masaya kami dahil nagustuhan nila from the cinematography to the rapport of the cast and crew,” he says. GMA7’s Atty. Gozon expressed his happiness with Tom’s contract renewal. “Well tayo naman, we are really grateful and appreciative na nag-sign up na naman sa atin si Tom dahil siya naman ay talagang magaling na artista at makikita naman yun sa mga programa kung saan siya lumabas,” he says. Mr. Duavit, on the other hand, also has nothing but praises for the actor. Tom is a great example of a professional actor.
Narito ang kaniyang sinulat: “For I never knew the kalabaw, I knew about the Moose. For I’ve never seen the Chocolate Hills, I’ve seen Pinawa. My home was never the pearl of the south; yet I still respect and love it unconditionally.” When my father told me to write something about my experience here in Canada, I came out with that poem. It expresses how, even though my birthplace and roots are in the Philippines, I still feel like Canada is my home. This may seem like a bad thing, but keep reading because I am here to explain that it ain’t so bad. I’ve lived nine years in the Philippines, and nine years here in Canada. The home country was pretty rough for me. I had no father growing up because he had to work overseas to support the family. This lead me to bond closer to my grandfather, cousins and mother. We all lived in one big land, and I enjoyed living with them. However, the Philippines has lots of challenges for me. I felt
CRISTY...
out of place at school because it was a military-based Montessori. It was pretty hard to make friends, hard to fit in, and what killed me inside is; I never knew who I was. Imagine someone asking you, “So how would you describe yourself?” and have nothing to say. It hurt. I felt like stain on society, with no label and just a burden to my mother and father. I don’t want to say that I hated it there, because I had fun too. Every time my cousins and I played video games, biked and ate; I was enjoying it. Every time my mom and I would go to arcades, I would love it. And every time I apprenticed with my grandfather when he was working on something, I didn’t want it to end. Don’t get me wrong, I never said I hated the place, but I also said never said that I love it. When we departed for Canada, I couldn’t really comprehend what was about to happen. My mother was crying but I didn’t know why back then. My father had a big smile on his face, and I didn’t know why. Little did I know, our whole world was about to change. The moment I stepped on Canadian land is when we had a stop at Vancouver. Not gonna lie, I was pretty intimidated by the people. They were tall, white and that goes under Filipino standards for beauty. I didn’t know a lot about anything back then, and I was scared. We finally made it to Winnipeg, where my family gave us a warm welcome. Life changed from there. I can confidently say that the people I met here in Canada is
I made friends in school, people who have the same interests as me. People who talked to me, and people who love me. I woke up with a smile on my face because I just couldn’t wait to go to school. My friends pushed me hard to go for my dreams. This lead to me releasing three albums with all original songs, one feature film, and it motivated me hard enough to make a website for my projects. When I came here to Canada, I finally found the voice I had been searching for half of my life. It made me the person who I am today, and I will continue to pursue my dreams. I believe this is what my parents wanted for me. I’m happy here in Canada, and I can proudly call it my home. – Freedom Lapuz
Home. Tahanan.
We’re home.
And I truly admire Ms. Helen Gamboa. “Iyon ang totoong grace under pressure. Napakagrasyosa
Susmaryosep!
Up to now pala, hindi pa rin siya tanggap.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) M a r a m i n g nag-aaway na magkakamaganak dahil sa mamanahin.
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept.
Good days ang ika8 at 9.
Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Bakasyon?

*** Isa pang man to watch ay ang DOJ secretary.
Masasapawan nito ang six-year-government plan for infrastructure, food production and other industrialization projects ng gobyerno. *** Muling bubuksan ang kaso ng multi-billion peso pork barrel scam known as PDAF and DAP.
