Duterte’s soft side Think Rodrigo Duterte and the descriptions that come to mind are “tough,” “iron-fisted,” and even “oppressive.” He speaks his mind with no apparent thought for political correctness, and because of this he is often seen as rude, brash, and uncouth. The news reports add to this aura, and it doesn’t help that there is currently a kind of war between the media and him. The result is a Presidentelect who looks distant, menacing, and frightening. But those who know him know that he is anything but these. Davaoeños who have lived under his leadership for more than 20 years see him more as a fatherfigure than a government official, and the title “Mayor” is used in the same was as “Tatay” or, to the older ones, “paré.” Sure he’s tough against crime, but what father isn’t strict? But under the seemingly unpolished exterior is a man with a soft heart for the people. A man cannot be loved by a population of 1.5 million if he is who is being reported to be now. In the early days of the Presidential campaign period, when news reports on Duterte were mostly negative, Davaoeños sought to balance the equation by putting out their own stories of how Duterte had personally helped them. The hashtag #mydutertestory trended on social media but was still not picked up by the newspapers and networks, and many non-Davaoeños are still unaware of the many small acts that have endeared him to his people. House of Hope The most touching of these stories are those that tell of his concern for children, especially
On 6 June 2016, members of the Filipino community got together at the Philippine Cultural Centre of Manitoba for “An Evening of Community Envisioning,” which has been part of the larger Envisioning Celebration project of the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba (PHCM). The goal of this event was to discuss the goals and aspirations of the community for the next 20 to 25 years, focused on the core values of respect; trust and integrity; teamwork, leadership, communication, and positive attitude. These values were identified during a conference hosted by the PHCM on 7 March 2015, led by Martin Itzkow, who also led last week’s meeting (For more on this conference, see http://
those who are sick. Dr. Mae Dolendo tells the story of how Duterte first visited House of Hope — a transient home for children with cancer as well as their caretakers — in 2007 for its ribbon-cutting ceremony. “Our then-Davao Medical Center Chief was skeptical that he would really come,” Dolendo said in her #mydutertestory post. “Why should he, when he skipped the inauguration of other huge and more important infrastructures within the hospital compound.” “But such is the unpredictability of Mayor Rody. He was at his happiest when he was giving out ice cream and gifts to the children; mingling and conversing with their parents — asking where they come from, what they do for a living against the background of the rickety old dorm we spruced up and called our home,” she added. Dolendo said Duterte is his most vulnerable self when he is with the children. “Once, after a particular emotional conversation with a dying teen, he stood in the corner warding off tears, alone with his emotions,” she said. Young friends And then there was Adsel Kryll Carino, a cancer patient at the Pediatric Oncology Section of Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC). He was 14 when he was first brought to a hospital in 2009 for a check-up. “He could barely fold his left knee nor hardly walk straight. He could not even do his usual stuff like playing basketball and the drums,” his sister Hana Khrystelle wrote in her #mydutertestory entry. He was later diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a primary bone cancer that affects mainly children
pilipino-express.com/news/2844envisioning-our-future.html). I was privileged to be welcomed to attend this meeting, and even contribute my thoughts on a couple of points. While the atmosphere was relaxed, a lot of hard work and thought went into the evening as participants discussed the core values of the Filipino community. This process involved attempting to define, in some way, the core values, and to list five day-to-day situations in which each value was experienced. Next, positive and negative aspects of each value were identified in relation to the community. The discussion was lively and frank, and at the end of the evening we were left with
and adolescents. Low on funds for chemotherapy, their mother went to the office of Duterte, who was then Vice Mayor, to see if Adsel could avail himself of the Lingap para sa Mahirap (care for the poor) program. “The Office of the Vice Mayor extended all the help they could without hesitation and without any condition. Medicines needed for my Kuya’s chemo sessions just poured in. Duterte would even sneak in the middle of the night just to check and had little chitchats with his ‘friends’ without any media coverage or the like. By friends, I mean all the patients at the pediatric oncology ward of DMC who are all children,” Hana wrote. “In order to help my Kuya ease the struggles of his treatments and for him to experience the ‘usual’ teenage stuff, Mayor Duterte once asked my Kuya about his crush during one of their chitchats. And he arranged a date for them at Pastor Quiboloy’s Tamayong Prayer Mountain, riding the Pastor’s helicopter,” she added. Adsel would succumb to cancer in January 2013, but not before Duterte could arrange for him to return home to Midsayap, North Cotabato to spend his final days. Tears of joy And of course no one knows Duterte more than his children do, and his daughter “Inday” Sara Duterte-Carpio described him as a no-nonsense father who thought only of their welfare. “He never missed my school’s Recognition Day because he always wanted to be the one to pin my ribbons and medals. How could I forget how he sounded like a broken record playing in the background of my childhood when he repeatedly said ‘education is everything.’ He did not emphasize excellence in academics though. The medals were merely a bonus,” she wrote. Sara admitted that she rarely
talked to her father since he and her mother separated, but she said she called him once when she was struggling with her studies in third year of law school. “I wanted to release a good cry… I wanted to talk to a lawyer. I rarely talk to my father. We have a love-hate relationship,” she said. “When I heard his voice I couldn’t speak. Every word disappeared in the surge of emotions. I could only cry. His first question was, ‘Asa ka (where are you)?’ I howled like a wounded wolf. Then I sensed that he was already alarmed as he repeatedly asked me where I was. At that point, I thought, he could be thinking I was raped… There was silence at the other end of the phone before he asked me: ‘Buntis ka (Are you pregnant)? That was the moment when I started to laugh. I laughed so hard, really hard,” she added. “I tried to catch my breath and simply said ‘Naglisod ko sa akong Wills and Succession (I am having a hard time with Wills and Succession).’ I could hear the exasperation in his voice as he retorted: ‘The answers are not in your tears. Go back to your books!’ Yes! That was the very reason I wanted to talk to a lawyer — no comforting words, no baby bunny stories. I just wanted to listen to the heartless stop-crying-becauseit-will-not-get-you-anywhere answer,” Sara related. Sara said someone told her her father cried when he learned that she had passed the Bar Exams. “I think he cried because I did better than him and that made him successful. I also think he cried because I am his personal trophy in making sure that the next generation get the education that they needed. And yes, I think he cried tears of joy.” Jon Joaquin is the Associate Editor of EDGE Davao, the newest daily newspaper in Mindanao. E-mail Jon at jonjoaquin@gmail. com.
Community vision, values, and place a poignant and difficult question from our coach, Martin Itzkow: “After all this discussion, what were you going to do about it? To whom were you going to talk about this? In short, what was the point of all this?” I took inspiration from this to write a little bit on the history of community envisioning amongst Filipinos in Winnipeg. As I reflect on my overall research on the community’s history, I realize that much of it is caught up in trying to determine both its future and place in Canada. This theme of Envisioning Celebration and the community’s future led by the PHCM – and including many different community
organizations – is not the first such attempt to gauge the position of the community and plan for its future. Certainly, it is one of the most concerted, well thought out, and supported efforts for decades. As best as I can find, the earliest attempt at this was a conference held on 2-4 September 1977. This conference, whose theme was “The Role of Filipinos in the Manitoba Mosaic,” was hosted by the Philippine Association of Manitoba (PAM) and its proceedings were published in co-operation with the Department of the Secretary of State of the Government of Canada. The proceedings are available in the See MALEK p7

Sex after baby Dear Ate Anna, I had a baby two months ago. At my six-week check-up the doctor said it was OK to have sex again. I know my husband was happy to hear the news, but I don’t seem to have any interest in sex. My husband is trying to be patient, but I am starting to feel like there is something wrong with me. Is this normal? Kathryn Dear Kathryn, You have just gone through a life-changing event. Your sex drive is probably just suffering from sleepless nights, tiring days, and a baby with many needs. If you are breastfeeding, your hormone levels are still not the same as before you got pregnant. Many women are physically ready to have sex before they actually want to make love again. Sex might be the last thing you are thinking about now, but eventually you will get your sex drive back. Some women can hardly wait to get the “green light” from their doctor, but it sounds like you are not one of them. Even these women often feel too exhausted in the early weeks and months of parenting to enjoy sex the way they did before the baby arrived. There are several factors that can affect a woman’s sexual desire: how much sleep you are getting; how much help you have at home; whether or not you are breastfeeding; whether or not you have any “baby blues” or postpartum depression. As well, new babies take a lot of time and a lot of energy. Remember that sex also takes concentration, time, and energy. As a result, many couples find that sex drops down to the bottom of their to-do list. Changing from a couple into
a family is a big adjustment for both partners. If you are doing everything that relates to the baby, talk to your husband about his role and what tasks he can take on. This can help him have a more realistic picture of the work involved in caring for a young child and to understand your fatigue. Spending time together figuring out how the changes have affected your relationship may help to renew your connection with each other. The important thing is to talk honestly with your husband about how you are feeling. If you are not ready for sexual intercourse yet, say so. If you are worried that intercourse will hurt, talk to him about what feels good and what doesn’t. Try exploring other ways of being intimate – snuggling, kissing, caressing. This is a time when some men choose to masturbate because their sexual libido is causing frustrations, but they don’t want to cause any discomfort for their partners. Don’t force yourself to do something you don’t feel ready for, but don’t shut yourself off from receiving intimacy in other ways. When you feel ready to have intercourse, take your time. Use plenty of water-based lubricant, especially if you are breastfeeding. The hormonal changes associated with breastfeeding cause vaginal dryness in many women. Try different positions to see what feels comfortable. Talk to each other about how things are going and if it hurts, stop. You can try again at another time. And don’t forget that sex makes babies. While it’s true that breastfeeding (every two hours and no supplements) can delay the return of a woman’s fertility for up to six months, this is not a
foolproof form of contraception. Use birth control unless you are thinking about having another baby in the near future. Some women find it difficult to combine their identity as a mother with their identity as a sexual person. We are not taught to think of mothers as sexual people, although they are. Some breastfeeding women (and some partners) feel uncomfortable about enjoying the breasts in a sexual way since they are now nurturing a baby. Remember, enjoying your breasts sexually and nursing your baby are two separate activities. And your body is designed to enjoy both. Kathryn, if it’s possible, try to find some time to do things that make you feel good. It could be soaking in the bathtub or going for a walk outdoors. Feeling relaxed can make a big difference. As well, remember that relationships are based on trust and understanding, so keep the lines of communication open. Both you and your husband can try to focus on enjoying time with each other in whatever way feels good right now. Sincerely, Ate Anna Ate Anna welcomes your questions and comments. Mobilité Francophone and immigration to Canada What is Mobilité Francophone and why is it important to all Canadians? First, it is important not to lose sight that Canada is a country with two official languages, English and French, and second, that the official working language of the province of Quebec is French. Also, there are francophone communities throughout Canada. In Winnipeg we have St. Boniface and outside the city, towns like Notre Dame de Lourdes or St. Jean Baptiste. Third federal and provincial immigration programs often give special considerations to French speaking applicants destined for communities outside of Quebec, and this is where Mobilité Francophone fits in. On June 1, 2016 IRCC Minister John McCallum announced a new measure to
recruit foreign nationals to come to French speaking communities across the land, outside Quebec itself. La belle provence has it’s own immigration program. He spoke about collaborating with Francophone minority communities and organization to ensure that they would be able to bring in temporary workers, exempt from the Labour Market Impact Assessment. It will be easier for employers in these communities to hire qualified French-speaking applicants from abroad. “Immigration, both temporary and permanent, has a role to play in supporting vital, vibrant Francophone minority communities anywhere across Canada,” Minister McCallum said. “Mobilité Francophone benefits the employers, the newcomers and the minority
communities and it enhances our diverse nation.” OFWs with a Mobilité Francophone temporary work permit will be able to stay in Canada long enough to acquire Canadian work experience. It will help them qualify for permanent residency and increase the chance for selection – an “invitation to apply” – in either the provinces’ nomination programs like that in Manitoba or through the federal Express Entry system. “The implementation of Mobilité Francophone is very good news,” noted Ms Sylviane Lanthier, president of the FCFA, “since the specific objectives is to increase the number of French-speaking immigrants settling in our communities.” Potential applicants must demonstrate their French language proficiency, which is similar to that required for English language speakers.
Potential francophone applicants must provide results of an approved language test such as the Test d’evaluation de français (TEF), which scores similarly to the IELTS General or CELPIP. They will be graded under the familiar four categories reading, listening, writing and speaking: compréhension de l’écrit, compréhension de l’oral, expression écrite et l’expression orale. The results are then graded in terms of CLBT equivalency as part of the assessment process, such as the federal CRS (comprehensive grading system), within Express Entry. What should this news release mean to expatriate communities who speak third languages, such as Tagalog, which is one of the fastest growing third languages in Canada according Statistics Canada? It means that there are increased chances for immigration if your friends or families abroad
are conversant in French. There has been a noticeable increase in the number of French speaking applicants from the Peoples Republic of China because of the option of applying through the Quebec immigration program. “Vous parlez français” is not just a good place to start a conversation but also a reminder to potential applicants. Canada is still a country of two languages and applicants can obtain extra assessment points and other advantages for knowing either or both of Canada’s official languages. Model of Innovation – unlearning negative social media habits The school division I am working is embracing innovation in the way that we learn, teach, and share. Innovation is not synonymous to technology; it is a frame of mind. Technology may accelerate what we do with our innovative ideas, but it is not the actual driver. We, in fact, are the drivers of innovation. One way I am being innovative is by being a role model using my social media presence. Previously, my accounts were the Alcatraz of social media. I used a fake name so that my students wouldn’t find me. One day, it clicked: what, and why, am I hiding from them? Kids will learn how to use social media with or without your guidance. One way to make sure that they have a proper role model is to be a role model for them. My personal account was
MALEK... From page 4 University of Manitoba Libraries. The 1977 Conference was split into two sections. First were conference presentations, and these papers with topics such as Canada’s then-new multicultural policy, the value of education in Canadian society, economic integration for Filipinos (such as dealing with credit), and the role of Filipinos in Canadian affairs. These papers, presented to a community that was then around 20 years old, not only discussed the practical implications of living
once riddled with nonsensical posts (I was in middle school when I began using social media). As I entered the professional world, I understood that my “private” life that I post online is being observed. I now reflect on what I share, and when I share it. I share positive posts as motivation for my followers, and as of late, I have made a point to use social media to notify others about community events, celebrate local businesses, and share innovative ideas with my friends, family, community and colleagues. Note that this group did not include students - but why not? In the past few months, I’ve allowed former students to follow me on Instagram, one of my most active accounts. In the past two weeks since this publication, I
have allowed my current set of students to follow me – and I am following them in return. This allows me to model how an adult can use social media responsibly - I share great news, I celebrate my peers, I literally share snapshots of whatever I am doing that I feel is worth sharing. I support local business and news, and highlight the strengths of the community I’m in. They also see how I interact via comments and replies to public comments. Parent Tip: Social Media Habits If your child has access to social media, allow them to see how you are using it. If you are not ready for them to see your posts, perhaps there is a moment of reflection needed on your part as well. I have said it on a semimonthly basis - kids will mimic what we do. If we are using social
media to “troll” or harass others, to complain passive aggressively about others, or to be rude under the blanket of Internet anonymity, kids will pick up on these habits! Depending on your child’s age, they may already be aware of, or are actively using social media accounts. Celebrate your accounts - share how you use it. Feedback I get from high school teachers is that they teach students to unlearn bad habits that weren’t fostered from a young age. This is why you are probably seeing a surge of classroom Twitter accounts, blogs, and Instagram pages. Teachers at different levels of education are doing their part to ensure that students are learning about social media responsibility (and using it for good), and since it takes a village, we embrace having parents onboard in helping students learn positive habits when using social
media. in Canada, but also how, as a community, Filipinos fit into the multicultural mosaic of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Canada. The second section of the conference was a series of workshops on the themes of cultural and social values; education; national issues; and federal, provincial and local issues. It should be noted that these proceedings, as well as a conference paper, were done by Dr. Conrado Santos, who recently passed away. As a relatively young community, this conference was interested in situating the community within Canadian
society. What were its contributions? What Filipino values could Canada benefit from? What barriers and challenges presented themselves to Filipino families? These questions preoccupied the conference, as they did the local Filipino newspaper at the time, the Silangan. The workshops allowed the community to focus on issues that the PAM and the conference board identified; in comparison to the Envisioning campaign of the PHCM, these workshops dealt with challenges facing the community, especially in terms of integration. Thus, the workshop
on education called for a Filipino nurses’ interests group that would advocate for a body of healthcare professionals increasingly finding it difficult to have their credentials recognized (a challenge that Filipino nurses today are experiencing, still!) The workshop on culture and values expressed a concern for the preservation of Filipino heritage in Canada’s mosaic, and so issued a number of resolutions for a cultural centre, language school, cultural school, and others. Judging by the coverage of this conference, and a proposed follow-up meeting the following
year (which doesn’t seem to have happened), this gathering of Filipino community members generated a lot of excitement, discussion, and even debate. But, in my eyes as a historian, I think this was a turning point in the community for a few reasons. The massive government support tied in nicely with the overall spirit behind Canada’s multiculturalism policy, which emphasizes that the entirety of Canada is created by a collection and coming together of various ethnic groups. I think that this conference, as well as others that occurred across Canada in See MALEK p7

MALEK... From page 6 the 1970s and 1980s (including a national conference held in Winnipeg in 1982, also generating much discussion and debate), gave the Filipino community a lot of confidence in its place within Canadian society and of its capability to guide itself in that integration with its own Filipino values. I see this confidence and self-determination today in the PHCM’s events. In some ways, the basic challenges facing the community have changed very little. Today, the status of Filipino youth in Canada faces a number of challenges (including heritage preservation and educational attainment), yet many of these problems were widely discussed in the 1970s. In many ways, Filipinos in Canada face many the same challenges as other immigrant and Canadian families, but starting in the 1970s it was clear the community was going to face them with distinctly Filipino values and practices. Thus, in the 1970s there was an emphasis on the importance of the Filipino family, and at the Evening of Community Envisioning the discussion of Respect dealt in large part with respect to family members and elders. Canada’s multicultural policy has given room to ethnic groups to maintain their cultural heritage because, in all honesty, that is the best way to face their distinct problems. The Filipino community I see today faces much the same challenges as the community in 1977,
but it is with more confidence and determination. There is no doubt that Filipinos are a part of Winnipeg’s fabric, and now the community is taking a moment to determine how it will continue to contribute in the coming decades. This is no easy discussion. Like the 1970s, the discussions are hard and force community members to face values and practices that have negative influences. Like the 1970s, these discussions will likely involve communal soul searching, disagreements, and
even arguments as a direction is hammered out. When things get hard, though, take heart. Community is not necessarily a body of consensus, a group of people who all agree on everything; community is a process, a continual negotiation and re-negotiation among members, a journey shared by people with a common bond. The complexity of the community means that there are many needs – the large number of community organizations emphasize how
many different interests are involved – and these needs may, at times, conflict with each other. But, just like the 1977 conference did not “solve” the issues facing Filipinos in Winnipeg, this current project will help re-align the community with its pressing needs and positive values that will drive the community forward for years to come. Feng shui and the breadwinner’s prosperity In feng shui there is a special respect that is given to wealth, abundance and material assets. In particular, that respect should also be conferred on the breadwinner. Lots of people worry whether their personal feng shui is being favoured over a mate’s, but what’s most important is who makes the money in the house. In other words, how is the breadwinner protected? It may seem decidedly old fashioned to favour a man’s personal feng shui directions over the others’ in the house, but think about it – it’s the breadwinner that makes all things possible. By bringing in consistent income, the breadwinner imbues the house with the protection and comforts that the money he (or she) is able to earn. Of course, these days, the breadwinner may be the man or the woman of the household, or both. However, when everyone appreciates and offers respect to the breadwinner, this helps the breadwinner feel supported, and in turn, earn more money. The simple act of appreciating what the breadwinner does, lifts the money energy of the whole house and everyone in it. Let me tell you a story about my very first feng shui consultation: This was a house where the man was worried about a potential lay off. His wife scheduled the appointment to see me but both the man and his wife were there for our consultation. She stayed at home and didn’t work. They lived in a nice home in a comfortable area. She wanted me to check the whole house to see what could be done to help her husband’s job and give them more security. The wife pointedly told me how it important it was to check the husband’s office. I saw the whole house, looked at the yard and surroundings, checked out their library/guest room and their master bedroom and kitchen – everything. I sat
down to discuss my findings and then realized that I had not seen the husband’s office. I was puzzled because I know I had gone over every single room in the house. That’s when they both slapped their foreheads and laughed. “It’s upstairs in the master bedroom!” I thought I’d lost my mind because I didn’t see any work space whatsoever. They led and I followed them to the master bedroom. Motioning with their finger, she says, “It’s in the bathroom,” they motioned to me as I followed. “The bathroom?” I asked. In the attic, “Just a little further, it’s actually in the closet,” the wife chuckled as the man looked more and more dejected and embarrassed as we moved toward “his office.” Moving some clothes aside at the end of the closet, she showed me an attic door that led to the eaves of the house. No kidding. They had built a board into the eaves of the house under the roof — that was his makeshift “desk.” It was lit by a bare light bulb, and it was distressing just to see it. “Do you want to go in?” the wife asked. “No, I want to go downstairs,” I told her. I had seen enough, and actually, I felt my face flushing red in embarrassment for this man, and my heart sinking in disappointment for this man’s pathetic work space, and the almost palpable contempt for the job that earned this family’s living. “Let’s sit down again,” I said. The couple sat before me ready for some magical pronouncement. Instead I waved my arm in the arm to cover the entire room and said, “Do you realize that five foot square space in the attic makes all this possible?” The man, feeling vindicated, perked up and the woman looked blank. I then asked how often they had guests. The answer was once or twice a year, yet this man went to work every single day – in an attic. I asked them what kind of career security could there be
when the respect for this man’s living is past a bedroom, into a bathroom, through a closet and then crawling into a half door into a space more commonly inhabited by squirrels? This placement showed a complete lack of respect for the man, a disregard for his hard work and disdain for the items he needed to do his work (desk, computer, etc.). I told them to get him out of the attic immediately and move him into the guest room and how to set up an office auspiciously. I checked a week later and they had not done it… and he had been fired from his job. Guess when they moved him into the guest room/library? That’s right…after he was fired. But, the good news is, he found a new job within a month — after moving into the guest room/ library and making it his home office. This was a proper room with walls, ventilation and heating (and no squirrels). He also was markedly different by his family’s attention on all the good things his job brought to them and their lives, and the newfound respect for how he earned a living. This is a lengthy story, but one that is important. It shows how money – and those who make it – should be protected, appreciated and respected. Prosperity chi tips: 1. Always protect the breadwinner. Make sure this person is in an auspicious office and seated in his or her beneficial directions, that the house supports him or her and that his/her efforts are appreciated – and respected. 2. Always protect the front door. This is where opportunity chi enters the household. Keep it clean, auspicious and attractive. 3. Always pay bills promptly. Keep your payments and accounts up to date and current. Late payments, overdue bills and debt are an energetic prison and lower your money chi. I set all my payments for one day of the month – the 15th, a magic number in feng
shui. 4. Always save money. Even if it’s $10 a month, put something IN to your household. You must learn to accumulate money, not just spend, or it will be forever going out of your hands… and your life. Look for ways to add money. We often get into a trap of cutting expenses. Instead, what are some ways you could add money to your household – think about adding rather than cutting further. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My husband and I argue over our personal feng shui directions. I tell him that both of our directions are important, but he says that they’re his because he’s the man of the family. Is that true? Incidentally, I make twice the money he does but I put my earnings into a separate account and he pays the household bills. Answer: It would be true if he made more than you and was considered the breadwinner. But, as long as you are the single largest source of income for your family,
that makes your directions more important. However, because you are not truly supporting the family by putting your money into a separate account and he supports the household that makes his directions more important. The person most financially responsible for the household is the winner irrespective of how much he or she makes. Here’s my suggestion: why not pool your resources? Put both salaries into the pot and each of you can create a separate spending account for incidentals and such. This will help create parity in your home. Viable Systems Model Part 1/2
If you’re building a brick and mortar business or a digital online business, cash is king and systems are emperor. In business, career and life everything is a system. This is why our environment is called an ecosystem. Most businesses are bent on doing things right and a system helps do the right things. A business requires three types of systems to
succeed. Be mindful of number three because it is a game changer. The first are Hard Systems. These are inanimate objects like real estate, offices, desks, software, supplies, stationary, technology and work materials and so forth. The next are Soft Systems. These are animate objects. Examples of this are people and
ideas. The last are Information Systems. These provide data about the interaction between soft and hard systems. Information systems are Scripts that explain how people communicate with what they’re equipped with. These scripts have to be fashioned with intention. Here’s a step-by-step methodology for creating an information system for your business. 1. Identify the major consumer decision points, also known as Benchmarks. For instance, setting appointments, analysis of needs, presenting solutions, customer
interactions and other things. 2. Develop a written script for each benchmark based on what has worked in the past with other people. 3. Create complimenting materials that will work alongside each script. 4. Have salespeople memorize the scripts. 5. Have salespeople deliver the scripts in identical fashion without deviating from the system. 6. Let each salesperson respond to the prospects specific needs as required. It is important that records
are made of total sales contacts made and the sales that came from those offers. Compare and contrast results from different campaigns. This is referred to as the Cost Benefit Analysis. More on that in part two. Business, Success & Money Message: “All organizations are hierarchical. At each level people serve under those above them. An organization is therefore a structured institution. If it is not structured, it is a mob. Mobs do not get things done, they destroy things.” Theodore Leavitt, Author. – www.valenvergara.com.

We stand against hate WINNIPEG – Some 300 people gathered at the steps of the Manitoba legislative building on Monday evening, June 13, to mourn the victims of an attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in the early hours of the day before. The attack was the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman in U.S. history. American born Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old regular patron of Pulse nightclub, murdered 49 people and injured 53 others before being killed in a police SWAT team raid. Witnesses said he swore allegiance to the ISIS terror organization during his killing spree. Jonathan Niemczek, the president of Pride Winnipeg, which organized the vigil, said the event was designed to give members of the local LGBT community and its allies a safe space to mourn. Placards with the names of the 49 victims killed in the nightclub shooting were placed on the steps of Manitoba’s legislative building at the ceremony. “When I look at all the names on the steps of the legislature, I cannot think about all of the families ... that are mourning
tonight,” said Rochelle Squires, Minister for the Status of Women. “Love is louder than fear, she added.” Interim Leader of the Opposition, Flor Marcelino, also expressed sympathy for the families and friends of the massacre victims, and expressed solidarity with the victims’ community. “This was an act of homophobic violence against the LGBTTQ* community — not only in Orlando, but for communities and individuals around the world. “We all need to stand with the LGBTTQ* community and make it clear that they are accepted and safe to be who they are,” said Marcelino. Premier Brian Pallister was unavailable to attend the vigil, according to his office at the time. He explained to reporters the next day that he had a cold. On Tuesday, Steinbach, Manitoba also held a vigil for victims of the massacre, drawing about 200 residents and surprising organizer who didn’t have enough candles to go around. Steinbach will hold its first ever LGBT Pride Parade on July 9.

PAGE 10 As Pilipino Express goes to the press for this issue, the tension is heating up as fans countdown to the season finale of MasterChef Canada that airs Sunday, June 19, 2016 on CTV. The top two home cooks: Winnipeg’s Jeremy Senaris and Toronto’s Mary Berg will compete for the $100,000 cash prize and the title of MasterChef Canada. Canada first saw Senaris, a self-taught cook, on MasterChef Canada’s premiere episode that aired last February. He was among the 40 home cooks that were discovered after a series of national auditions. Senaris went on as one of the Top 14 home cooks competing under pressure to impress the judges. The succeeding episodes saw the elimination of one home cook after another. Senaris has successfully kept his post episode after episode, proving that he is a very strong contender. When he emerged as one of the Top 4 contenders, Jeremy showed he was up to the challenge with renewed motivation: “I feel that I’ve been losing myself trying to impress the judges with other

I’m going back to my cooking style that got me here and hopefully that will get me to the Top 4.” And he didn’t stop there; he is now one to reckon with as he goes head-to-head with Mary Berg on the season finale. Born and raised in Winnipeg to Filipino parents Edgardo and
the late Marina Senaris from Cavite, Senaris currently works for the City of Winnipeg as a building plan examiner. MasterChef Canada’s judges are Claudio Aprile, Michael Bonacini and Alvin Leung. It is the Canadian version of the cooking show that originated in the UK in 1990.

Winnipeg chefs together on Sama-sama Night A full house gathered for good food and a good cause at Sama Sama Night, a fundraising event held June 12 in support of NorWest Co-op Community Food Centre. Led by Allan Pineda of Baon Manila Nights, the sold-out event raised much-needed dollars to provide free food programs to the community. A team of seven up and coming chefs came together to showcase the dynamic flavours of the Philippines through a six-course meal, adding their own spin to the traditional dishes we know and love. The featured chefs were: Rob Austria, Stella’s; Kevin Castro, Stella’s; Nikki Melegrito, Sugar Blooms and Cakes; Jeremy Senaris, MasterChef Canada; Clair Snowball, Red River College; and RJ Urbano, Crème Del’Essence. To complement the evening, Mixologist Ryan San Diego created a variety of mouth-watering Filipino drinks that reminded many of being on the islands back home. According to Pineda, this is the biggest team of chef’s he has ever
worked with since starting his monthly pop-up dinners, and it proved to be a huge success. The fundraiser had a very special meaning to Pineda, as he spent most of his life in the Tyndall Park area for 25 years. “NorWest does a fantastic job of helping the community and the people. Growing up we didn’t have the luxury of these programs and activities,” says Pineda. “For us as chefs, it’s the little things we can do as our part by contributing with what we do best and that is making food.” Janellyn Marcial, Development Coordinator at NorWest, believes the collaboration with such a talented group of chefs was the reason behind the memorable evening. “I contacted Allan to see if he was interested in turning one of his monthly pop-up dinners into a fundraiser for our centre, and he immediately agreed to take part,” says Marcial. “Because of this event, were able to raise money for our healthy food programs, and more importantly, share our story
with a group of people we would never be able to reach.” NorWest Co-op Community Food Centre provides free healthy food programs for the Inkster and Seven Oaks communities. It is a welcoming place where people come together to share a good meal, join a cooking group, grow a garden, learn about healthy lifestyle and be involved with the community. All proceeds from the event will fund critical programs and services that bring healthy food to the Inkster and Seven Oaks communities. For more information, visit norwestcoop.ca.

Luisa Marshall’s Tina Turner Tribute show coming to Winnipeg Filipina singer and talk show host, Luisa Marshall, will perform her award winning Tina Turner tribute show at Pampanga Restaurant and Banquet Hall on Friday, June 24. Luisa, who hosts the weekly variety show Simply the Best on Shaw television in Vancouver, is travelling across Canada raising awareness and funds for Canadian Military PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) issues in her Hope Beyond Thunderdome Tour 2016. She has performed twice on the Oprah show and recently received a standing ovation on the Ellen show. The title of the tour comes from Luisa’s past experiences performing for the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in places such as war-torn Bosnia, Sarajevo and later with the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) in Israel and Egypt. She said the most requested song on both tours was Tina Turner’s We Don’t Need Another Hero from the movie Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Louisa felt that “Thunderdome” was a metaphor for the situation that soldiers were in at the time, and hope is what they needed. “They were like babies to me,” said Luisa. “They need our
help.” Luisa has committed five dollars of each ticket to go to the Veterans Transition Network. So far, the tour has raised over $21,500 for this cause. The Tina Turner Tribute Show is at the Pampanga Restaurant and Banquet Hall on Friday June 24, 2016. Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Showtime 8:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Pampanga or online at www.brownpapertickets. com.

CRISTY...

May makita lang kayong See CRISTY p18

Young animators win national competition Two Daniel McIntyre students have been honoured for their work in the area of animation. Rain Cahigas and Sarah Mohammed won first place in the annual Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) national video competition. Students from all provinces compete at the provincial level. The best videos are then submitted to the national competition. This is the first time that students from Manitoba have won for best video.
The young animators, Rain and Sarah received significant cash prizes from CCOHS and Safe Work Manitoba while Daniel McIntyre Collegiate received matching funds. Rain Cahigas and Sarah Mohammed were also flown to Ottawa, along with their teacher Margot McEdward, to be honoured at the national launch of North American Safety and Health Week. There they met with the Minister of Employment, Workforce, and Labour, MaryAnn Mihychuk, and
received praise for their video from many leaders of national health and safety organizations. It is possible that this award may lead to paid work from these organizations in the future. Daniel McIntyre animators have done excellent work the last few years. Rain Cahigas and Sarah Mohammed won Gold last year at the Provincial and National Skills competitions and Shi-Ann McDonald won the Grand Prize for her animation in the eHealth Video competition held earlier this year.

Sana mali ako at tama kayo.

Ako’y produkto ng Plaza Miranda at kasapi ng Nationalization Movement of the Philippines during the later part of 1950’s.

4. Because of political independence, muling maghahari ang pansariling interes ng both majority and minority politicians. Ang kahihinatnan ng pagbabagong hangarin ni Pres. Duterte ay nakasalalay sa destiny. Kasabihan: Pagbabagong hangad, karaniwang mahirap matupad? Paquito Rey Pacheco worked for 21 years in Philippine radio broadcasting. treated with appetizing creations by budding chefs led by Allan Pineda, Masterchef Canada finalist Jeremy Senaris, Claire Snowball, Nikki Melegrito, RJ Urbano and Ryan San Diego. “This is definitely a summer
event to watch out for,” said organizer Lourdes Federis. Food-o-rama Festival, in support of NorWest Coop and Winnipeg Harvest, is scheduled August 6-7, 12 p.m. to 9 pm at the PCCM grounds (737 Keewatin
