It’s balimbing season once again The balimbing was a common fruit when I was growing up in Malabon. I remember eating it as a child and enjoying its crunchy, juicy, and slightly sweet-and-sour flesh. We could buy it in the market or even on the sidewalks, where vendors would sell them chopped up into little pieces and serve them in small plastic bags with a little salt. When I grew older, though, it grew a little scarce, and since I moved to Davao City in 1990, I’ve hardly seen one being sold here. I googled it just now and realized that perhaps this is because the fruit is not actually native to the Philippines. According to Wikipedia, balimbing (called carambola or starfruit in English; its scientific name is Averrhoa carambola) is indigenous to Indonesia, India, and Sri Lanka. Maybe that’s why it hasn’t increased in recent years. Many people I know have not had it in a long while also. Which is probably just as well. Ever since the 1986 People Power revolution, the balimbing has had a bad rep because it has become synonymous to turncoatism or of being a political butterfly. This is because of the fruit’s shape: having five similar facets, it appears more or less the
same however you handle it. In local parlance, a balimbing is one who moves from one political party to another with ease and with no apparent hesitation. This happened when the dictator Ferdinand Marcos was ousted in 1986: in its aftermath, many of those who had been his allies and helped him in his campaign for the snap election that year quickly changed allegiance and became part of the new ruling party, the PDP-Laban of new President Corazon C. Aquino. To the consternation of the people, those they knew were part of the excesses and abuses of the Marcos regime were now members of the new government. It has been like that ever since. Every single Philippine President elected after Aquino was with the opposition, save for Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo whose victory in 2004 was just an extension of the presidency she had taken over from Joseph Estrada who was ousted in 2001. The people have always voted against a current administration, but what this has meant is that every six years, there is a mass exodus of politicians who are eager to jump ship from their former bosses and fall into the good graces of the
new leader. This very thing is happening even now with Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte winning the presidency over administration bet Mar Roxas. Almost immediately after he won, Davao City has been the scene of a bizarre parade of personalities who are here ostensibly to congratulate the incoming President but are suspected of actually lobbying for various positions in government for themselves and their friends. Many of those who have come (and are still coming) did indeed help Duterte during his rough campaign, but a number actually belonged to other camps and are obviously trying to get in the mayor’s good graces. The latest of these personalities is boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, who ran and won a seat in Congress under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) led by one of Duterte’s rivals, Vice President Jejomar Binay. Pacquiao had earlier said he, being a Mindanaoan, was supporting Duterte’s bid, but during the actual campaign he worked hard for Binay and appeared in various advertisements proclaiming the latter as his choice for President. Well just last Saturday night (May 28), Pacquiao turned up in Davao City and met with Duterte, and, according to the
Philippine Daily Inquirer, he said the following: “Noon pa man hanggang ngayon ang suporta ko na kay Digong [Even before, I have always been supportive of Digong].” He also claimed that his campaign for Binay was “was merely his obligation to honour his agreement with the defeated presidential candidate.” Yeah, right. The thing about Philippine politics is that there is no real discernible difference between candidates and political parties. All of them proclaim the same basic beliefs: maka-Diyos, makatao, makabayan (for God, people, and country). That is why any election campaign period is filled not with discussion on policies and platforms but with personal attacks. They cannot criticize each other’s programs because they espouse the same things, and so they are left with nothing to throw but the weaknesses in their opponents’ character. Given this, it’s easy to see how politicians can so easily jump from one party to another: each one is the same as the other, and the name of the game is being on the side of the winner. The changing role of fathers Growing up in Winnipeg in the 80s and 90s, my parents (like many other Filipino-Canadian immigrant families at the time) had an arrangement to work opposite shifts. Because my father worked an early morning shift and my mother worked evening hours, they were able to independently manage caring for my three siblings and me. Now that I am a therapist and often study family dynamics and relationships, I appreciate the great sacrifice that so many parents in that generation made to ensure that their children were taken care of. In honour of Father’s Day, it is worthwhile to take a look back at recent history to appreciate the responsibilities and roles that fathers have had over the years, and how the modern day father has emerged. The role of the fathers in the 17th century was quite different from how it is today. During those times, in many cultures, the father was the breadwinners and seen
as the head of the family, ruling over major decisions involving land, property, and finances. He had the final say in the lives of his wife and children. A father was responsible for the development of the children’s moral and religious values, so discipline fell into his territory. Because it was thought that any affection would spoil the child, fathers often had distant, authoritarian relationships with their kids. The Industrial Revolution in the 19th century brought with it urbanization, where cities and towns developed and people began living and working in central areas. Factories emerged as major places of employment, and fathers were distanced from their families, working away from the home. The role of the mother shifted too as they became more central in the teaching and discipline of the children. Another important shift occurred in the 1940s when a remarkable increase in women
entering the workforce was seen. Once again, men became more involved with the household and child rearing responsibilities. Interestingly, fathers were not only the providers of the family, but they began to become nurturers as well. Fathers began to have more playful and affectionate relationships with their kids, and were not so distant from family experiences. A review of recent Canadian family trends highlights how different the modern world is for fathers compared to centuries ago. According to Statistics Canada, 83 per cent of recent fathers in Quebec had the intention of claiming for parental leave in 2013 whereas 12.2 per cent of new fathers in other provinces claimed the same. In 2011, a male parent headed 21 per cent of single-parent families. Also, the average amount of time that men spend with family members has increased since the 1980s. With regards to housework, 77 per cent of men in 2005 reported involvement, whereas this figure grew to 81 per cent in 2010. Clearly, the role of fathers is not so distant from their spouses and children as it once was. Couples
are now more likely to view housework and raising children as a team effort. Reflecting on my own childhood, I absolutely appreciate the hands-on role that my own father took. Because he was home after school, I saw him more than I did my mother. Even though he would be tired from work, he made sure that we ate, did our homework and went to bed at an early hour. Whenever I asked for help with homework, he was there to answer as best he could. He valued education and I inherited this from him. I remember the day that he bought his children an encyclopedia to reference for schoolwork. He was definitely protective and could be strict at times, but he had a gentleness about him that I see when he talks to my own children today. My father taught me the importance of working hard and cherishing your loved ones – values that I hold very close to my heart. Wishing you and your family a Happy Father’s Day! Escueta among Canada’s top teachers Former Winnipegger recognized By Ted Alcuitas BRITISH COLUMBIA – “You don’t have what it takes to learn French,” Emmanuel Escueta (‘Noel’ to friends) was told as a young 16-year old immigrant in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1981. That remark did not discourage him, Escueta told Philippine Canadian News.com (PCN.com) in a telephone interview. Instead, it challenged him to pursue his dream to learn French, a language he considered ‘exotic’ back in the Philippines. Fast forward to May 12, 2016 – 35 years later That day, Escueta stood proudly on stage in Ottawa to receive an award for teaching excellence from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau; he was one of 10 teachers in Canada recognized for their excellence. “My strength was in languages and if I could not be a teacher, I wanted to be an anthropologist,” he recalls his days at Don Bosco in Manila where he completed his third year of high school. Like any immigrant, he found it difficult to adjust to the new environment in Winnipeg and had to confront the question – “Who am I?” “What is a Filipino?” To help him with his dilemma, he joined the pioneering dance troupe – Magdaragat Dance Company founded by the late Dante Buenaventura, where he found himself among Filipino youth also questioning their own identity. While busy with Magdaragat, he also drove himself to learn French on his own and only took basic French in high school. He worked as a waiter at the Franco Manitoban Centre where he could hone his French. He also worked with Lebanese immigrants in Montreal while completing a six-week Summer Language Bursary Program. After finishing a teaching degree at the University of Manitoba where he obtained a double major in French and English, Escueta taught at public schools. His first was at the remote northern city of Thompson. From there he moved to Powerview, Manitoba where he encountered the recurring problem of students “hating school.” “They didn’t quite know what to make of me,” he remembers his early teaching days. One time, his students asked him – “Are you Native?” to which he replied: “Close enough.” These experiences formed the genesis for his Verbathon teaching aide that he developed over the years to help teachers engage students and encourage them to learn. The award of excellence The recognition comes with a $5,000 award to be shared with Irvine elementary school in
Port Coquitlam where he teaches Grade 2 French Immersion. He used his share to bring his family to Ottawa to attend the ceremony. Escueta said he was completely caught by surprise by the award. He thanks Jovita Kleim, a parent, for nominating him. “In his nominating papers, Escueta was recognized for his Verbathon — a relay for teaching kids their French verbs — which has spread across the country, his multi-cultural teachings in which he teaches students to sing Christmas songs in three languages and play traditional Filipino instruments, and for introducing Kidspiration, which helps students write speeches in French, with one Grade 2 student winning a district French speech contest, as a result, “ reports TriCity News. “It was an unbelievable, invigorating, inspiring, humbling experience to see what the other educators are doing. I’m like floating on air,” the 51-year old father of three told Tri-City News after receiving the award. Escueta was excited to discover that Prime Minister Trudeau, who was a teacher in Vancouver, used Verbathon. “I managed to give him a Verbathon t-shirt and he signed one for me in return.” He was happy that his family shared the prize with him. “It’s an experience they’ll never forget and will be greatly enriched. On top of that, my son, Dominic, celebrated his 16th birthday in Ottawa where we spent part of the time at Parliament Hill. Not too many 16-year olds can say that they watched Question Period in the House of Commons, toured and was given special access to the Library of Parliament and dined at the Parliamentary Restaurant on their birthday!” Move to B.C. and marketing Verbathon After 15 years in Winnipeg, Escueta moved to B.C. settling in Port Coquitlam where he teaches Gr. 2 French Immersion at École Irvine Elementary School. As Verbathon was getting known, he needed to manage its distribution. He formed Escutech Educational Products Ltd. that he operates with wife Jennifer, a music teacher, out of their basement.
“A real mom and pop operation,” he said with a chuckle. Available in French, Spanish and German, Verbathon is used to teach grammar through games in a fun, active, and team-based approach. It is based on what Escueta calls his Infinite Principle – Inclusive, Fun, Interactive, Integrative, Team-based and Empowering. Verbathon (www.verbathon. com) is so adaptable that teachers from elementary through university as well as immersion and second language teachers can use it. Asked where he gets his

Why is he doing it? “Not as pure profit, but as a legacy,” he says, hoping that the award of excellence will boost Verbathon’s popularity more. IRCC Report on Express Entry year one Immigration, Citizenship and Refugee Canada (IRCC, formerly known as CIC) has conducted its own assessment of the first 12 months of the Express Entry selection system for immigration to Canada. The report gives us a snapshot of the types of applicants selected as part of the first 23 draws – or invitations. Overview Over the first operational year, 31,063 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) were issued from the inventory collected under the Expression of Interest online profiles. There are a number of things the IRCC report highlights: • The ITAs were issued to a number of occupations but chief amongst these were IT and food service industry occupations; • The majority of ITAs were issued to applicants who are residing in Canada; • Over 50 per cent of the invited candidates were foreign nationals from India, Philippines, China, the UK and Ireland. The IRCC summarized their findings by stating, “Future invitation rounds from the Express Entry pool will become the main
source of applications to meet annual immigration levels [and], targets for certain economic immigration programs under the Federal Express Entry system as the older inventories are reduced.” Express Entry was intended to become the selection mechanism to ensure that Canada’s economic and labour market needs would be met. It was supposed to be more of a response to the needs of Canadian employers and provinces. Therefore candidates with qualifying job offers supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or provincial nomination were favoured with additional assessment points (600). There is no question that an approved job offer is beneficial, but it was not the only way to qualify for an ITA. Over 40 per cent of the candidates invited did not have approved job offers. Occupations The top job most invited occupations made up 10,685 (or 38 per cent) of the total number of ITAs issued. The occupations include: NOC6311 food service supervisors; NOC6322 cooks;
NOC2171 information system analysts and consultants; NOC2173 software engineers; NOC2174 computer programmers and interactive media developers; NOC4011 university professors and lecturers; NOC6211 retail sales supervisors; NOC5241 graphic designers and illustrators; NOC1111 financial auditors and accountants; and NOC1112 financial and investment analysts. IT professionals (NOC beginning with 21) and business and finance professionals (NOC beginning with 11) appear to possess the human capital needed to secure selection, while other candidates with NOCs beginning with 63 were more likely to have been selected on the basis of a work permit and work inside Canada. Three Federal Skilled Immigration streams The early draws highlighted the value of education and work inside Canada under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). This will help explain the numbers of food service supervisors and cooks who were selected throughout 2015. The immigration department expect this number to decrease during the current operational year into the future with a shift towards
“a wider range of occupations, particularly in professional occupations such as IT and business.” Although CIC applicants dominated the early selections, the composition changed throughout 2015 with an increase in the number of “enhanced provincial nomination certificates” issued and selection from applicants from other federal skilled immigrants streams such as the Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC). And there was a small but steady issuance of invitations under the Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC). The final figures show 13,214 (42.6 per cent) under the FSWP, 11,228 (36.1 per cent) under the CEC, 4,105 (13.2 per cent) under the PNP and, 2,516 (8.1 per cent) under the FSTC. Processing times What about the claim that permanent visas would be issued in six months? The reality is that 80 per cent were actually completed in this time frame. The IRCC took time out to praise itself on this accomplishment: “[It] leaves the system in a competitive position to continue to attract new candidates who wish to take control of their own destiny and approved to
an immigration system that is responsive and swift.” The IRCC Report provides a favourable assessment of the Express Entry selection model. The program has been used by a significant number of Philippine citizens – 12.6 per cent of the ITAs. But the challenges faced by friends and family members abroad continues to grow. There is no question that there is a special advantage for overseas foreign workers and international foreign students inside Canada. But the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is not the only way to earn an invitation. Applicants without job offers are being selected. Potential applicants must continue to improve their immigration potential to match the selection process. If they do not, then run the very real risk of being passed over for selection. Foundation insulation Heat lost from a conditioned and un-insulated basement can be as high as 50 per cent of a home’s total heat loss in a wellinsulated and tightly sealed home. Foundation insulation is designed mainly to lessen heating costs and has very little effect in reducing cooling costs. More so, foundation insulation improves the liveability of basement rooms, increases inhabitants’ comfort, and lowers the risk for mould growth resulting from condensation build-up. There most common residential foundations types are full basement, slab-on-grade, and crawlspace. A full basement is recommended on locations that have low water tables and deep frost lines. Most old homes
normally have crawlspaces. In some parts of Canada, it is common to see slab-on-grade foundations in homes with a walk-out basement. Full basements can be insulated either on the exterior or interior. Usually, 2x4 lumber framing with wet-spray or batt insulation covered with drywall are used in interior insulation. Rigid foam insulation secured with furring strips are also installed on basement interiors. Extruded or expanded polystyrene can be used for both exterior or interior, but any above-grade insulation that is exposed should be sheltered to guard it from ultraviolet rays and physical damage. Common protective materials include the application of a stucco-like finish,
cement board attached to the sill plate, and roll-metal stock to match the siding. Crawlspaces are just short basements meant as access to plumbing lines, electrical conduits, and HVAC ducts in older homes. Common insulation systems installed in crawlspaces are exterior foam and foam-form insulation systems. However, interior crawlspace wall insulation is typically either foam board or draped insulation. If foam insulation is installed, it must extend from the top of the footing to the top of the foundation. The void spaces between the rim joists must be packed with fiberglass batts or a foam-in-place product. Most fire codes permit up to 50 millimeters of polystyrene exposed on the interior of a crawlspace before covering is installed. Several jurisdictions call
for a ventilated crawlspace to manage moisture. Vent provisions are considerably lessened if the crawlspace floor is covered with plastic sheeting with overlapped sides and taped to reduce moisture. The floor above the crawlspace can also be insulated to raise the thermal envelope between the floor and crawlspace walls. Also, plumbing piping and heating and cooling ducts within the crawlspace must be insulated accordingly. The heat loss on slab-ongrade foundations is maximum at or adjacent the exterior grade. Proper insulation is critical in slabon-grade foundations in order to reduce the cold-floor syndrome and lower the heating costs. Exterior foam insulation that is also used in exterior basements can be installed. The insulation must extend from the top of the
footing to the top of the slab. It is required to allow for a thermal break to avoid thermal wicking from the slab to the outside. Use of a bevelled slab edge or a pressure-treated nailer can provide the necessary thermal break and attachment substrate to finish floor covering. In summary, energy savings can be achieved by considering the best insulation system appropriate for the type of foundation. The determination of the most costeffective insulation solution to foundations depends on several factors such as the type of foundation, efficiency of heating equipment, cost of natural gas, and climate. Jeremy Senaris in MasterChef Canada’s Top 4 On the MasterChef Canada episode that aired on CTV, Sunday, May 29, 2016, the judges challenged the remaining Top 5 home cooks to create their own cocktail-inspired dessert and main courses. Winnipeg’s Jeremy Senaris was assigned to create a dessert and a savoury dish inspired by the Irish coffee cocktail – using coffee, whiskey and cream. Acknowledging that he was not that familiar with foods using coffee as one of the major ingredients, Jeremy took on the challenge with renewed motivation as he declared: “I feel that I’ve been losing myself trying to impress the judges with other things that I don’t really know. I’m going back to my cooking style that got me here and hopefully that will get me to the Top 4.” And with that enthusiasm he created a savoury main course called “Coffee and Togarashi dry rubbed beef with whiskey and cream sauce.” “For my dessert, I’m gonna go back to my Filipino roots… I’m making a champorrado… it’s a Filipino dish, basically a chocolate rice pudding.” Hence, he concocted a dessert he called “Coffee and chocolate rice pudding with
whiskey-candied bacon” – an adaptation of the traditional Filipino breakfast or merienda called champorrado. Before tasting Senaris’ dishes, one of the judges noted that he wished Senaris paid more attention to his plating presentation of the modified champorrado dessert. However, as soon as he sampled it, he said: “Surprisingly delicious!” Judge Claudio Aprile, on Senaris’ main course said, “In terms of the presentation…this is the best looking main course I’ve seen in this challenge.” Jeremy was obviously very pleased with the judges’ comments about his creative and delicious dishes. When judging time came, the Top 4 home cooks were chosen: Jeremy Senaris, a Building Plan Examiner from Winnipeg; Mary Berg, an Insurance Broker from Toronto; Matthew Astorga, a Digital Design Consultant from British Columbia; and Veronica Cham, a Lawyer from Toronto. The judges are Claudio Aprile, Michael Bonacini and Alvin Leung. April Lee Baker of Alberta was sent home. On the next episode of MasterChef Canada, the Top 4 home cooks vying for the title and $100,000 cash prize with their respective families in attendance as the competition gets closer to its finale. Together flying high James Reid and Nadine Lustre in Winnipeg By Judianne Jayme One of the Philippines’ hottest love teams arrived and performed at the Burton Cummings Theatre on May 27th, 2016. James Reid and Nadine Lustre, together known as JaDine, became household names as a pair from their hit ABS-CBN teleserye On the Wings of Love. Dennis Castaneda of DMC Productions gave the fans what they were hoping for – a chance to get up close and personal with JaDine during an intimate question-and-answer type of meet-and-greet at Pampangga Restaurant and Banquet Hall the night prior to the huge event. The show opened with a celebration of our local talents, Annie Lux, Ruthelle Colobong, James Cruzat, and DJX on the turntables. The staff and volunteers of MYXZ Images provided media and coverage, helping at both the meet-and-greet as well as the main event itself. Accompanying JaDine on their Canadian tour were two impressively athletic and energetic dancers from the G-Force Poppers, and the highly entertaining comedian Chad Kinis who also served as the show’s master of ceremonies. The venue was deafening as the countdown began after intermission, with fans revved up and ready to catch a glimpse of the
highly anticipated duo. Without missing a beat, the two were on stage and entertaining their audience with both their original Tagalog songs and covers of the latest Top 40 hits. All songs were met with equal enthusiasm from the audience who were keen on singing along with each track. Such a supportive and responsive audience gave the young stars an energy boost. Known best for their acting skills, they also were able to showcase their talents in singing and dancing as well – each big number ending in a pose that sent their audience into squeals of delight and a whole lot of kilig! Kinis also brought on stage two members of the audience to act out a scene as JaDine took a slight break to rest and prep for their final set. At the end of the evening, they performed one last number as a group ensemble, to the rush of fans waving signs and holding up their phones to get the closest possible photograph of their favourite stars. The sign of a well-attended and fan-centred event: the endless ringing in your ears as you drive away from the venue. Thank you DMC Productions for being an advocate for bringing JaDine to Winnipeg. How to store winter clothes safely With cold weather finally out of the way in most parts of the country; it’s time to rotate the clothes in your closet. In fact, regardless of whether you live in a seasonal climate or a temperate one, cramming all your clothes in the closet all the time makes it harder to find what you want. Also, leaving your wool, cashmere and specialty fabric clothing out during the summer — when bugs are more prevalent — could leave you with moth holes when you pull those garments out later in the year. The clothing ‘bug’ Many fabrics are edible and can attract bugs. Wool, linen, rayon, cotton and cashmere are all favourites. And it’s not just moths that will chew on your clothes; they’re just the most common culprits. Beetles, silverfish, termites and cockroaches may all find your wardrobe tasty. Putting away seasonal clothes keeps these pests away. Store it right But out of sight shouldn’t mean out of mind. As tempting as it is to put plastic dry cleaning bags over your clothes and call it a day, or stuff them all into a spacesaving bag, hold off. The best place to start is your closet. Start with a thorough cleaning. Begin by removing old clothes you no longer wear or want to thin out your wardrobe and create more space. Then vacuum the closet thoroughly. Make sure clothing is clean prior to storage with all stains removed. This will deter bugs and keep stains from becoming set in. Drawers are an option for storage, but they need cedar liners and should close tight. Store cashmere and other expensive fabrics in clear plastic locking tubs, which give the fabrics room to breathe. To keep garments fresh, use cedar blocks or lavender sachets. Avoid unnatural products like mothballs or dryer sheets. If you live in a humid area and worry that stored sweaters might mould, drop silica crystal packets like those that come in so many products today into your storage boxes. Avoid storing sweaters and other hanging garments right after they come from the dry cleaners. The wire hangers can damage delicate fabrics and the plastic covering isn’t effective enough at keeping insects from working their way inside and eating your garments. If you have an extensive collection of cashmere items, it’s best to wrap each item in acid-free tissue to keep it dry and protected, and then store in a plastic container with a tightfitting lid. Avoid moving your coldweather clothing out of the closet, though. Storing clothes under the bed, in the basement, attic, or garage is unwise, because these are places where bugs
are more likely to be found and where temperature variations can damage your clothes. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I work as a receptionist in an office and our plants continue to die in the psychiatrist office where I work. As you can imagine, there is a lot of “bad mojo” coming through our door. What makes it worse is that I have a co-worker who has an ill-will toward me, is underhanded and does everything she can to make me look bad in front of our boss. We share an office space together, and a sharp corner of her desk points at me. She goes on maternity leave at the end of June, so I would have time to make some changes then. You helped me find another job when I lost mine two years ago, so your help again would be great. Answer: I’m glad you were able to find another job, but it sounds like this is less than ideal. Each time I give someone advice, I try to imagine myself in that circumstance. If this were my situation, I would do everything I could do to re-arrange my desk while the co-worker is away on maternity leave so that
she is not at your back, and that her desk doesn’t “aim” at you. Try to position yourself in the lucky corner and where your boss would be “behind” you to support you. If you could position her desk to face a wall, that would be helpful so that confrontations are lessened. Negative energy and people with mental or emotional difficulties can bring that energy into your space, so you do have to handle a lot working in the kind of office you do – and with the kind of co-worker you have. One man tells a story of taking out his job frustration on his family every day after work. One day, seeing the look on his family’s faces, he decided to take a different tact to diffuse his work frustrations. There was a small tree growing by the driveway that the man would wrap his hands around each day and shake in his rage after getting home from work. When he went into the house, he had relieved the anger and annoyance before seeing his family. The tree? It died after a couple of months where it had been growing well before. It’s no surprise. A tree is a living thing. So are your office plants. It’s no wonder they died too. One of the best things you can do is to add silk plants to your
office, so a live plant needn’t suffer and you get some growing energy. Try to create a soothing energy in the office by adding some peace offering, such as an apple, chocolates or flowers on your desk and hers. If you have a crystal ball, this will also help create some smoother feelings and ground some of the energy coming in. You may also want to do a thorough cleaning of the office while she’s away, too. Sometimes you’ll find dust and dirt has accumulated and a good cleaning
will help. I wish you luck. There’s nothing like a problem at work to make the day drag on forever. Denisse Samaniego – Miss Teenage Manitoba 2016 By Eman Agpalza Denisse Samaniego, a 19year old born in Kawit, Cavite, Philippines, was crowned this year’s Miss Teenage Manitoba. Denisse participated in her first pageant and competed against 10 other beautiful young ladies on May 14 and 15 at The Fairmont in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she resides. Denisse moved to Canada with her parents in 2000 when she was only 3 years old. “Growing up, I always wanted to be in performing arts,” said Denisse, who grew up playing with microphones. Denisse recognized her passion in artistic expression – singing, dancing, and acting quickly became second nature to her. Denisse got heavily involved in school plays, talent contests, and performed in shows to help fundraise for causes in her community. Denisse decided to enter the Miss Teenage Manitoba pageant shortly after she turned 19 in September 2015. The pageant was open to girls ages 13 to 19 living in Manitoba and Denisse saw it as the right opportunity to enter the competition. “The year I decided to commit to the Miss Teenage Manitoba
pageant was the same year Pia Wurtzbach from the Philippines won Miss Universe and I thought to myself, this could be a sign that I might have a chance,” said Denisse. The two-day Miss Teenage Manitoba competition was everything you would expect from a pageant showcasing talent, beauty, and leadership. Candidates were scored on three categories: evening gown, swimsuit, and personal interview. In addition, candidates were asked to create a campaign addressing an important issue that challenged today’s youth. “The platform I want to promote is education about mental health in schools. I want youth to know it is normal to feel down but what’s important is to keep going and focus on how to channel negative energy into a positive outlet. Start by talking to someone about how you feel and open the channel of communication.” Denisse is currently in university, aspiring to become a teacher to inspire youth. As a future educator, she wants to share her positive experiences and become a leader in the community. Denisse’s journey as Miss

Kayla Seminiano cheers for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers By Lucille Nolasco Kayla Seminiano loves to dance. And this passion for dancing earned her a spot in the exciting world of the Winnipeg Blue Bomber Dance and Cheer Team. The 19-year old is among the newest members of the performance team after passing a rigorous audition and a panel interview in April. She has started rehearsing beginning of May, putting in several hours, three times a week, to perfect the routine. “I’m enjoying every minute of it!” said Kayla. “We were told from the beginning that it takes a lot of effort and dedication to be on the team. Everyone is working so hard. I have met so many people on and off the team. I met a lot of young people who said they look to me. It’s such a great feeling.” Kayla’s love story with dance began at a young age. Although she liked singing at first, she discovered she liked to dance as well. Her mother Marinette shared that they enrolled Kayla for dance lessons, and those lessons paid off handsomely. “Their group got invited to perform at World Disney in Florida. She also competed in both national and provincial
dance festivals, and received a scholarship at the Los Angeles Dance Fest held in Minneapolis,” said the proud mom. The Winnipeg teen was also a member of Team Canada who competed for the World Championships for tap dancing in Germany that brought home the gold, Marinette added. Now, although Kayla is not competing for any medals or awards, she is focusing on honing her dancing skills to serve her home community. “One of the reasons I wanted to be a part of the team is I wanted to be involved in the community”, said Kayla. “We do different things like going to fundraisers and other events to support other people. Our involvement is yearround, consisting of a lot of volunteer work for each dancer and stunter.” The athletes are called Cheerleaders and have two sides to the team – dance and stunt, which both fall under the cheerleader label. Jennifer Mathieson, manager of the Blue Bomber Dance and Cheer Team said that they look for “athletes with talent, positive attitudes, personable personalities, those who show good community relation skills and responsibility. Athletes have to be not just

But for now, she’s concentrating
on perfecting the routine and making the best of her time this summer with the Blue Bomber Cheer and Dance Team. “Being able to be a part of the team gives me an opportunity to be a positive role model”, said Kayla. “It is very important to set a good example for the younger ones and I know that everyone on the team possesses that quality.” For more information about the Blue Bomber Cheer and Dance Team or how to apply, visit www.bluebombers.com

JUNE 1 - 15, 2016 Top-rating singing competition The Voice Kids is back on ABS-CBN. Now in its third season, it will again try to search for the next singing superstar with the help of its superstar coaches: Broadway diva Lea Salonga, rock superstar Bamboo, and new coach megastar Sharon Cuneta. “Our Top 4 last season was pretty crazy. It’s like, where do we go from here? Now, we’re turning for special kids who have immense potential for improvement. Our standard is pretty much the same – you got to have something we can absolutely work with and we have to be able to see that you have the potential to be the champion of this competition,” said coach Lea. Coach Bamboo, meanwhile, will try to score a back-to-back win after her artist Elha Nympha was named grand champion last season. “I’ll try. I can’t control things but I’ll try my best. That’s my goal – to pull out the best from every child and see which of them reaches the finals. Here in the country, we have a lot of great

They’re not just vocally wonderful but they’ve got some really interesting personalities, which have been entertaining for all of us,” shared coach Lea. The chemistry among the three coaches is also evident in their banter. “I am so grateful to God for the chemistry. There was no way to find out if there was such a
thing among us until we started taping. It seems like the audience laugh a lot, we laugh a lot; we have a lot of fun bantering. It’s a great to be working with two super pros, experts, and icons. I am so honoured to be in such great company,” Sharon said. “It feels great. It feels at home. Ang sarap ng pakiramdam especially with these kids I got recently.
Ang ganda-ganda niya, partida pa iyon, dahil wala siyang make-up!
Sabi nga, don’t judge a book by its cover, especially if you’re not a judge. Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Career Internship appreciation luncheon On Wednesday, May 25 the Annual Career Internship Luncheon was held at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute. The purpose of this luncheon is to celebrate the successes of the students who have worked as interns in their chosen potential professions. It is also a time for the students to show their appreciation for their mentors who have dedicated over 30 hours of their time and provided them with exceptional career experiences. The primary objective of the program is to provide students with a supervised mentorship experience that is related to their post-secondary and career goals. The course is facilitated over one semester and includes both classroom and practicum components. The classroom component exposes students to skills related to interview strategies, time management, and professional protocol. They are also expected to create and maintain a professional work portfolio based on employability skills. The practicum portion allows the intern to shadow and participate in a chosen field under the supervision of their mentors. Students in the program have had the opportunity to work alongside doctors, pharmacists, engineers and accountants as well as a variety of other professions in meaningful
roles. Some of these roles include doctors allowing students to observe operations, and engineers presenting students with a problem followed by work site visits to observe how the problem was solved. Kristin Melnyk, the current program coordinator says, “I have been fortunate to step into this role and have the opportunity to work with such exceptional students.” Ms. Melnyk claims that the success of the program has been the combined effort of many people. “The support of our mentors and the community has been amazing and without willing professionals to mentor our students, this program would cease to exist. We often see our mentors hiring our students because the experience for both has been so positive. The luncheon is the perfect way to show our students, our mentors and our community leaders how much their hard work and effort is appreciated.” City counsellor Cindy Gilroy and School Trustee Cathy Collins were also in attendance. During the luncheon, guests were able to view some of the other successful programs that Daniel McIntyre has to offer and were delighted with performances by their vocal jazz group DMCIce and their dance group DMCI’s Finest.

CRISTY... May haharang.
“It was a one way street, John Lloyd is selfish. See CRISTY p19

CRISTY... Nagpa-thank you pa nga siya.

May nabawas, totoo iyon, pero it’s not enough to make her small.

SAGOT SA NO. 252
JUNE 1 - 15, 2016
Ibang usapan kapag ipinuwera mo sila.
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. Huwag kang matakot.
Good ang ika-2, 3, 10, 11 at 12.
Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) S u w e r t e !
Huwag kang ma-insecure.
Marami kang makikita at matutuhan.

Makiisa, makisama at makipagsaya.
Rody Duterte’s win for presidency is a clear expression of the peoples’ indignation toward the Aquino administration.

“The Ombudsman and his Deputies shall serve for a term of seven years without reappointment. They shall not be qualified to run for any office in the election immediately succeeding their cessation from office. Duterte is liable sa kaniyang jokes.
Magkakaiba, Nagkakaisa – Embracing Diversity Filipinos celebrate Philippine Heritage Week, June 3-13 WINNIPEG – On June 12, 2016, Filipinos around the world will commemorate the 118th Anniversary of Philippine Independence. In the Philippines, this year’s Independence Day takes on a different meaning. It will signify the Filipinos’ renewed hope in the restoration of basic freedoms as they welcome a change of
leadership with their newly elected President Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte and Vice-President Leni Robredo. In Winnipeg, the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba Inc. (PHCM) invites everyone to celebrate Philippine Heritage Week from June 3 to 13, 2016. This year’s theme is Magkakaiba, Nagkakaisa –
Embracing Diversity. The PHCM offers a number of activities to pay tribute to Philippine Independence and heritage. The various events have been designed to encourage the public to discover and appreciate the various traditions, customs and languages of the Philippines. According to PHCM spokesperson Paul Macaraeg,
“This year, PHCM wishes to highlight the message of respect and acceptance for all, harmonious work relationship, and care and appreciation for one another… to embrace the unique Canadian multicultural heritage as well as the differences in sexual orientation and religious affiliations.” For a complete list of events, please see below.
CRISTY... – CSF
