Making ‘bola’

“Bola” in Filipino literally means “ball,” but colloquially it means to flatter. I’m not sure how it came to mean that, but I can guess that it’s related to how the word “bilog” (round), when used as a verb, also means to flatter, to round off someone’s sharp corners, so to speak (“binibilog mo ang ulo ako”). This is why President Benigno Aquino’s use of the word “bola” when talking about what sacked Special Action Force (SAF) chief Director Getulio Napeñas supposedly did to him sounds so surprising. The President’s actual words, spoken to a group of Christian leaders in Malacañang on March 9, were: “(M)aliwanag sa akin, binola niya ako.” Using the translation in my first sentence, what the President said was, “It’s clear to me that he flattered me.”

Now obviously that’s not what he meant. I think he intended to say “niloko niya ako (he deceived me). “Bola” is not the same as deceive, which in Filipino would be “loko” (which in turn is taken from the Spanish “loco” or crazy – but don’t ask me how “crazy”

became “deceive” in Filipino).

But “niloko” is a strong word, and perhaps Aquino meant to tone down his accusations against Napeñas a little. In the end he used a word that most Filipinos use as a joke, or during courtship.

Either way, it sounded terribly inappropriate.

Regardless of his choice of words, the President gave us an idea of how he actually runs government. It is apparently based on misplaced trust on people whose competence was questionable. If Napeñas did deceive him, how did the President so easily fall for a lie? He had many resources and other sources of information; how could one person pull his leg so effectively that he allowed more than a hundred SAF men to enter MILF territory without the latter’s knowledge – and with tragically disastrous results at that?

This is, of course, presuming that Napeñas actually did deceive him. The suspicion, however, is that the President had full knowledge of the operation and that he personally approved it. At

the very least, it is his duty to take full responsibility for the debacle because that’s what commandersin-chief do. They do not shirk responsibility and blame their subordinates when something goes wrong. It was not Napeñas who “made bola” the President – to borrow Kris Aquino’s speaking style – it is the President “making bola” to us. *** Meanwhile, back in my hometown of Davao City, police have netted 20 suspected drug pushers in a dawn raid on a community known to be a den of such personalities. Even with the arrest of an unusually large number (the usual count is one or two), the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has admitted that drugs are still rampant in the area. The police operation, which targeted the leaders of a known drug syndicate, had apparently touched only the tip of the iceberg, with an entire mountain of ice – to use one of the slang words for methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu – still hiding beneath the surface.

This leads to a very inconvenient paradox, one that should give pause to those who believe the rhetoric that Davao City does not have a drug problem.

If Davao City is as it is being

portrayed to be, that is, a place that is relatively safe from the reaches of drug syndicates and pushers, then why do we periodically see the arrest and often even the summary execution of suspected drug dealers? The very fact that they keep getting arrested and killed means drugs do get sold right here.

What is even harder to admit is that the so-called vigilantes who have been doing the summary killings for more than a decade are apparently not causing a dent on the drug scene in the city. Dabawenyos have taken some illicit pride in these killers, crediting them for the peaceful atmosphere we enjoy today. In Davao City, we proudly proclaim, it is the criminal who is afraid, not the law-abiding citizen.

But let’s have a reality check here: if the drug dealers are afraid, then why are they still operating? And why is there an apparent air of impunity among them?

These questions have no ready answers, but one fact remains: drugs are still a real problem, and it appears to be a long way from being solved.

New season, new beginnings Spring is a season of renewal, another turn in the cycle of the year.

It is a season associated with new beginnings, and the same is true for schools. For many students and staff, we experience our spring break at the end of March and return refreshed (hopefully) for the last leg of the school year.

Spring can also be negatively associated with slush and rain. This is a reality. There are always two sides of the story, but the optimist sees the slush as melting snow, and the rain as a necessity for dormant greenery to appear once again!

My career as an educator gives me lots of reason to be optimistic.

I am in my third year as the Grade 6 teacher at Lord Nelson School, in the Winnipeg School Division (WSD). Lord Nelson is that majestic three-storey brick school on McPhillips Street between Redwood and Aberdeen Avenues.

It is a building you can walk into and be greeted by staff and students alike, all eager to help you get to the office or wherever your destination

is.

What does spring look like at Lord Nelson?

It looks like welcoming new families into our classrooms, many of them coming from the Philippines. Some of it also looks like a construction zone as the WSD begins building our brand new gym and extra classrooms! It also looks like the snow melting and bringing back to life our gorgeous outdoor classroom and sustainable garden area, featuring plants, trees and flowers that can be found across different parts of Manitoba. Spring also gives opportunities to gather in this garden after school as we have earned new picnic tables and benches for our sustainability projects.

People ask how I have so much enthusiasm for my career.

This question is met with a grin or laugh. Teaching is by no means an easy career, but loving what you do makes it well worth it. I’m so incredibly proud of the school I work in, the staff I have built strong

working relationships with, and the students who are motivated to keep up with our three school rules daily (setting examples all of us could really learn from): be safe, be respectful, be the best you can be!

This school, the students, and staff make my teaching career appear easy.

Spring is about rejuvenation and renewal – see the goodness around you, see the potential for growth, and the opportunities to continue learning!

Fifty shades of sexuality education Dear Ate Anna: Lately there has been so much about sex in the news. Firstly, all the talk about the movie Fifty Shades of Grey. Now everyone is talking about sex education in the schools. I think there is just too much talk about sex. No wonder young people are getting into so much trouble with it. Do you think we should be teaching about sex in school? Not sure; Marianne Dear Marianne, You are asking about a very timely topic. The simple answer is yes. Ate Anna believes that school is an appropriate place to teach sexuality education. However, comprehensive sexuality education also includes parents as sexuality educators of their children and this fact seems to be missing from many of the media articles and discussions.

Ate Anna also thinks that it is confusing when the media refer to changes in the curriculum for “sex education.” What children are learning in school is sexuality education and that includes much more than just information about sexual activities. It would help the conversation if everyone were using the same language.

To clarify: sexuality education in elementary school includes information about the body – correct names for the body parts, body changes during puberty and how the reproductive organs function. Children need to have information about puberty before they starting going through the changes to avoid the unnecessary worry that something is wrong or that they are not normal. In addition to the factual information, children will learn about issues like personal safety, consent, telling a trusted adult if personal boundaries are violated, being a responsible friend and family member, and bullying, to name a few. They are not being taught “how to have sex.”

Adults often worry about giving children too much information. However, these are

all appropriate topics for children to learn about because they deal with these issues in their everyday lives.

Sexuality education curricula are also developed to be age appropriate, beginning with simple concepts and moving to more complicated material as children mature and are able to understand more complex ideas.

Most research about sexuality education in junior and senior high school reveals that students feel they receive too little information too late. This was true 20 years ago and it is still the case. With easier access to sexual information through the media and the Internet, students need a place to discuss and learn about the difference between sex entertainment and sex education. If youth don’t get accurate information from a trusted source it increases the risk of getting wrong information from places like unreliable websites, movies, or people who may not have the correct information.

Ignorance will not protect our children and youth. Research shows that sexuality education can have a protective factor, giving children and youth information that they require in order to stand against the misinformation that is all around them. Information gives them the power to know the difference between fact and fantasy or marketing.

One challenge for teachers is their own uncertainty about honestly answering students’ questions for fear that parents or school administration will disapprove. Ate Anna believes that if a student asks a question, they have the right to receive a correct and honest answer. It might be more helpful to talk about how parents, administration, and teachers can work together to give children the information they are looking for.

Marianne, our sexuality is linked to every aspect of our lives.

The media know this and use sexuality to put forward their own messages. We need to talk about sexuality more – not less. Family See ATE ANNA p9

MPNP is always a good topic in Manitoba The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) is very much in the minds of many in the local community. We all follow stories on the program and listen intently to any word about the program, even the false rumours. The first such rumour was that the MPNP had ended.

No, it is still here.

One of the new rumours is that the program has reopened.

This is both truthful and also not completely accurate. On the one hand the program was never closed to OFWs or international students inside the province, or those with invitation letters to apply. On the other hand, the overseas application stream, formerly known as family stream and general stream, is still closed to new application submissions.

It may reopen any day, but as of the date of writing this article, it

is not. The MPNP is still working on reducing the backlog of applications in the system.

I received an interesting telephone call from CBC News regarding the current state of the MPNP. The reporter wanted to interview me about the state of program and wanted me to offer some criticism. Her request was reasonable but the timelines were too short because the story was being aired within 48 hours. If you listened to CBC radio or the local TV news on Wednesday March 4 then you would have heard firsthand the report by Donna Carreiro.

The story apparently focused on the effectiveness of MPNP for Business as a way to attract investment to Manitoba and business ventures, which would benefit the province in the long run. The story has some

relevance today because of the news that Manitoba suffered from a recent report that showed 4,800 more persons left the province than came in over the past year. Retention was the focus of the CBC story and safeguards built into MPNP-B were under review. The CBC did interview local immigration lawyer Reis Paktaghan as part of their story and he put the question into perspective: “their biggest challenge is how are you going to retain the people.” He explained about the performance bond, which was increased from $75,000 to $100,000. The conclusion is that increasing the bond alone is not the answer but rather the model.

I, amongst many, was intrigued to know what the CBC story was all about but I somewhat let down by the results.

The issue is hardly new to those of us who work in immigration

or even to the readers of this column. The PC opposition in the province criticized the MPNP in late 2012 about their poor retention rates and the auditor general of the province actually did an investigation into the effectiveness of the program. I wrote several pieces in the past such as “Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program for Business a success or failure?” on 01 January 2013 and “MPNP-B opens for 90 days and closes again” on 01 June 2014. The office of the Auditor General of Manitoba published the results of their extensive investigation in January 2013.

The MPNP-B was examined at length, criticized publically and hopefully, it has reworked its recruitment model to address past failings.

It is not my place to ask why such a story has come out at this time because it apparently adds nothing to our information about

the current MPNP-B and whether or not the reworked program with its emphasis on “expression of interest” is working better than the program criticized by the Auditor General. Like many others, I thought a more topical question for our readers would be about when the overseas application stream of the MPNP for skilled workers might be reopening.

But I missed my chance when I could not arrange a suitable interview time. At least we can be comforted by the fact that a story about MPNP, even MPNP-B, still attracts an audience.

The Envisioning Celebration’s goal was to ask attendees to focus on pinpointing the challenges that the Filipino community faces and examining possible steps to help the community grow and prosper.

“It is very interesting to note that the participants identified certain values that – if [they were] recognized by our community members – could help us flourish as a community,” added Javate.

“These values are respect, leadership and teamwork, trust and integrity, and positive attitude.”

The envisioning process was designed by the PHCM with the assistance of head coach Martin Itzkow, in consultation and discussion with the PHCM planning and steering committees.

The participants were divided into ten groups with assigned group facilitators and recorders.

“The Envisioning Celebration was from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and I am very happy that over a hundred stayed up to the end.

Prior to March 7th, we were fully aware that it might be challenging to keep the participants up to closing time because it’s a daylong event … and for various individual reasons… but I was pleasantly surprised at how everyone actively participated

UPAA-MB chairperson Norman Aceron Garcia remarked that he was happy to see active participation among his fellow participants.

Garcia shared with Pilipino Express the wish he expressed during the envisioning conference, “I imagine a Filipino community where each one of us is supporting each other’s businesses and professions. We go to a Filipino realtor whenever we buy a house. We go to a Filipino engineer, builder or architect whenever we renovate our homes … to a Filipino restaurant or store for our consumer needs … this is my dream.”

The recorded results of the daylong sessions were gathered by the PHCM and will be shared with the general members of Manitoba’s Filipino community. “Then we, as a community, will decide what our next steps will be to tackle these challenges in the next 15 years,” remarked Javate.

Collections – helpful or harmful?

One of the frequent targets of feng shui is clutter, and rightly so.

Clutter drains our life energies, saps on mental energy and drowns us in the possessions that we once took interest in to where they simply take over our homes, and in some instances – our lives.

It doesn’t matter how a collection starts, but what begins as an interest or even a gift, can go quickly from interesting to overwhelming. The energy of the collection then begins to take on a life of its own.

Think about people who have collections that you may have known… or your own.

Maybe you saw their house went from seemingly normal to feeling somewhat odd or sometimes obsessive, depending on the collection. That’s how fast collections can get out of hand.

Sometimes a collection was never the goal, but they happened anyway.

Like the funny camel your brother gave you and then suddenly, you’re getting camels for every occasion and from everyone. Camels begin to take over your life until you don’t see the camels anymore. All you see is clutter and stuff everywhere.

Or worse, when you look at your camels you just see your Great Aunt Martha when she so lovingly gave you the camel she bought on her bus trip to Pike’s Peak, but now she’s gone and that camel is your connection to her.

But it really isn’t. It was the times you shared with your aunt that mattered, not the camel. If you have a collection and are not sure if it’s draining or benefitting your life, give these thoughts some consideration. You might not even have a camel but realize there might be some items you’re living with that have gotten out of control.

Is it still interesting to you?

Maybe you loved collecting tennis visors from every hotel you visited years ago, but do you still feel the same? If you don’t have a passion for tennis visors anymore, that’s OK. It’s all right if you grow and change and no longer feel the same way. If so, donate them – or sell them on Ebay. There’s always someone willing to buy a full “set” of anything.

Is your collection/clocks/ visors/spoons/fill in the blank with your item the first thing people notice when they come to your house?

When you’ve been collecting a long time, you may not even notice your collection after a while. But if visitors notice your hats/dolls/porcelain pigs/thing that’s gotten out of control the first thing when they come in and comment on it, you might have become blind to how much your collection has overtaken your home.

Does your collection enhance your home or overrun it?

Take a good, hard look. Does your collection seem interesting or odd? A preoccupation with garden gnomes everywhere may tip the scales toward eccentric… and that’s when the collection can become yin. Instead of lifting up the energy of the home, the collection starts taking the house backwards. The collection drains the energy of the home’s occupants to the point that they’re fatigued; feel uninspired in life and the house seems listless and dull.

Does your collection make you happy?

Again, this could be blindness setting in. If you’ve grown out of your awareness of your collection and don’t really notice it anymore, then ask yourself if it’s still making you happy. If not, it might be time to pass it on, donate it or throw it away.

Are you or your house overwhelmed by your collection?

You might not even notice when a collection has become so

large it ceases to be interesting, and is energetically taking over your home in a way that you’ve not noticed, much like the frog that doesn’t realize he’s being boiled to death raising the temperature one degree at a time.

Is your home balanced?

Balance is an important part of feng shui. Just like it’s easier to drink water from a glass than it is from a fire hose, it is hard to succeed in life when your home is overrun by a collection. Even family photos can grow out of control, covering every inch of wall space.

Stand back and really look at your home. Has your attachment to certain items turned into a collection that you didn’t even know you had – like all the old electronics you can’t seem to get rid of or the old magazines you’ve been saving?

Has your attachment to your collection grown out of an emotional attachment?

A client once had a collection of baby dolls that she started after her daughter died at age 3, a time when little girls start playing with baby dolls. She’d never made the link that the baby dolls she collected were connected to her daughter’s death, but once she did, she was able to donate her collection to a doll museum, and more importantly, move past her grief once and for all.

FENG SHUI Q&A Question: You often mention things like getting rid of chipped glasses and mismatched dinnerware because it brings energy down.

I’ve always preferred mismatched dinnerware, and I think that old, ornate cups that have cracked are beautiful when re-purposed for potting plants. I later discovered that a lot of these preferences seem to fall under Wabi-Sabi, although to me they’ve always just been things that make me smile and feel happy. I was wondering is you could explain how Feng Shui and Wabi-Sabi can work together or if they are really opposing concepts.

defines it: “Wabi-sabi is the quintessential Japanese aesthetic.

It is a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. It is a beauty of things as unconventional. It is also two separate words, with related but different meanings. “Wabi” is the kind of perfect beauty that is seemingly-paradoxically caused by just the right kind of imperfection, such as an asymmetry in a ceramic bowl which reflects the handmade craftsmanship, as opposed to another bowl which is perfect, but soul-less and machine-made.”

I understand what you’re saying exactly and appreciate the Wabi Sabi of things myself. Using a cracked teacup, as a planter is very different than drinking out of a chipped, damaged cup or from mismatched dishes. In this regard, the concepts of feng shui and Wabi Sabi are very different.

I also like imperfect things, things that are aged or handmade, and don’t feel like their feng shui is compromised.

But when I’m talking about damaged pots and pans, cracked dishes, etc., I’m referring to disarray, disorder, damage and broken energy. When I see an old

table in my family room that I inherited from my grandparents, I see that the perfect outline in black on the surface of a bottle of ink that had spilled and whose outline is perfect. It refers to the days when inkwells were used to dip your pen into to write. This “imperfection” actually adds to the quality and interest of this table. It doesn’t appear damaged; it appears more interesting. But when I look at a stack of bowls in the cupboard that are crazed and chipped – I see damage.

This is how these two concepts are related in my mind and how they can be compatible.

It’s also why shabby chic can also work and still be good feng shui!

So take pleasure in your teacup planters. As long as you don’t see damage, and you see joy, then you should enjoy!

The Queen of Hearts – Ms Gloria E. Agravante

By Judianne Jayme The Original Filipino Seniors’ Association of Manitoba (OFSAM) celebrated Valentine’s Day on February 28th at FilCasa’s Luzon Hall. An invocation by the president of OFSAM, Letty Antonio, officially introduced Ms Gloria E. Agravante, escorted

by Mr. Jon Reyes, as the Queen of Hearts 2015 to her family, friends, and guests.

Ms Agravante’s daughter, Charisse Agravante, shared her mother’s story of coming to Canada in 1991 and making her way to Winnipeg in 1993.

She has nine children and 23 grandchildren. Prior to coming to Canada, she obtained a Bachelors of Science degree in Education and was a sixth grade teacher for 24 years. She worked in financial services in Winnipeg.

Guests enjoyed great company, delicious food from sponsors and volunteers, and upbeat music by Zeny and Cesar Fronda, which naturally lent itself to a very active dance floor.

What advice did the Queen of Hearts 2015 have for her guests regarding love?

She reminded her guests that the day of hearts is not limited to Valentine’s Day but should be celebrated every single day. In her words, the ultimate love comes from our King, Jesus Christ who laid down his life for us so that we may live forever. She also jokingly reminded couples in love to “love one another, not love another one.” She plugged an organization called Hands of Hope that brings gently used furniture to families in need, as well as new immigrants to the country. What better way to show love in our cold February winter than by extending a helping hand to those in need? Love, after all, is expressed in many ways.

Breast cancer and the bagong dating Study finds Filipino newcomers to Canada diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age and with more aggressive cancer TORONTO – Filipino women who move to Canada are diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age than women from other parts of East Asia or Caucasians, new research has found.

They are also more likely to be diagnosed with a more aggressive form of cancer and are more likely to undergo a mastectomy, according to a paper published online in the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health.

“The Canadian Filipino community is a growing community and this new research raises the question of whether our current Canadian guidelines calling for mammograms starting at age 50 are meeting specific cultural needs of different ethnicities when it is known that it takes years for a breast cancer to develop,” said Dr. Jory Simpson, a surgical oncologist in the CIBC Breast Centre of St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.

“As Canada continues to ethnically diversify this new research only highlights and magnifies the need to take on a more personalized approach to preventing and treating breast cancer.”

Dr. Jory Simpson origins have different risks of developing breast cancer. When a woman emigrates from an area of low incidence of breast cancer to an area of high incidence, her risk increases, possibly due to new environmental influences such as diet interacting with pre-existing genetics.

Dr. Simpson said he believes his study – albeit a small sample at one hospital – is the first to look at the incidence of breast cancer in Filipino immigrants to Canada.

According to Statistics Canada, Filipinos are the third largest non-European ethnic group in the country. Of the 328,000 people of Filipino origin who

live in Canada, many are young women.

Of the 782 patients he studied at St. Michael’s, which has a sizeable Filipino patient population, Filipino newcomers to Canada were diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age (53) compared to other East Asians (55) and Caucasians (58).

They were also found to be diagnosed with a form of more aggressive cancer and have a higher likelihood of undergoing a mastectomy. Thirty-seven per cent had a Grade 3 tumour on a scale of 1 to 3, compared to less than 30 per cent for other Asians and Caucasians.

In addition, 22.6 per cent tested positive for the protein HER2, or human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, which promotes the growth of cancer cells. Dr. Simpson said that was “disproportionately high” compared to East Asians (14.4 per cent) and Caucasians (15.1 per cent).

Filipino women with tumours the same size as their East Asian and Caucasian counterparts underwent more mastectomies in this study, 35 per cent, compared with 22.5 per cent for Caucasian women and 28.3 per cent for East Asian women.

Hindi siya psychologist. Hindi niya alam kung bakit ganoon si Roland.

Nagkaroon ba ito ng masaklap na karanasan noong bata pa?

Tinamaan ba ito ng kung anong sakit? Nasa dugo ba iyon? O sadyang ganoon lang si Roland?

Basta inuunawa na lamang niya ito.

Tutal, kahit ano naman ang dahilan ng kakulitan nito, uunawain pa rin niya si Roland.

Gusto pa rin niyang makasama ito habambuhay dahil mahal niya ito.

KUNG sa kaniyang sarili lamang, mapagtitiyagaan na niya kahit pa maya’t maya’y maging makulit si Roland.

Nasanay na siya sa kakulitan nito.

At sakali mang napipikon siya kung minsan, nagbabati naman

sila agad.

Isa pa, nakita niyang may malaking kabutihan para sa kaniya sa pagiging makulit ni Roland.

Sa edad niyang beinte-singko anyos, marami na rin siyang naranasan at nasaksihan tungkol sa pag-ibig.

Hindi si Roland ang unang boyfriend niya. Marami na rin siyang naging crush at nakaapat na siyang boyfriend bago nanligaw sa kaniya at sinagot niya si Roland.

Daig pa niya ang bumagsak sa isang subject sa paaralan nang hindi siya ang ligawan ng crush niya noong nasa haiskul siya.

Maraming estudyanteng babae ang may crush sa crush niya. Iba pala ang gusto nito, hindi sila na may crush dito.

“Ano ka ba? Para kang nasa alapaap! Magsaing ka na!” narinig na lamang niyang bulyaw ng kaniyang ina habang iniisip niya ang tin-edyer na lalaki.

Wala pa rin sa sarili na nagsaing siya.

Iyak siya nang iyak sa kaibigan niya nang matuklasan niyang may iba pa palang nililigawan ang boyfriend niya.

Kaya kapag nagtatalo sila (na madalang namang mangyari dahil iniiwasan niya iyon hangga’t maaari), pinipili niyang walang nakaririnig dahil ayaw niyang mapagtawanan si Roland.

Naiisip din niyang mahirap dalhin sa kalooban yaong parang laging nag-aalala at hindi mapanatag kahit ilang beses bigyan ng katiyakan na tulad ng nakikita niyang nangyayari kay Roland.

Pinapayuhan niya ito: “Kapag me sinabi ka sa kausap mo, sapat na ang isa. Tiyak namang narinig iyon. Kung talagang pakikinggan ka, pakikinggan ka kahit minsan

mo lang sinabi. Mayroon pa ngang tao na lalong kabaligtaran ang ginagawa pag pinaulit-ulit mo.”

NAKIKITA naman niyang pinahahalagahan ni Roland ang pag-unawa at pagmamalasakit niya.

Kapag nagbati na sila makaraang magtalo, sinusuyo siya nito.

Tanggal lahat ang inis niya, bagbag na bagbag pa nga ang kalooban niya, kapag sinabi na nito sa kaniya: “Sorry, ha?

Sinumpong na naman ako ng kakulitan.”

Tinatanong siya nito kapag sa tingin nito ay may problema siya o may dinaramdam. Alam niya, gusto nitong lagi siyang masaya.

Nagpapatawa ito kapag sa tingin nito ay naiinis siya.

Ngumingiti ito kapag tumatawa na siya. “Ganyan, masaya ako pag ngumingiti ka na,” sasabihin nito.

At magtatawanan sila.

Ang totoo, lagi silang nagtatawanan kapag magkasama sila ni Roland.

Higit sa lahat, ipinakikita nitong sa kaniya lamang nakatuon ang mga mata nito kahit pa katatapos lamang nilang magtalo dahil sa kakulitan nito.

Makabuluhang buhay Tayo’y inatasan ng Panginoong Hesus na hindi lamang mabuhay para sa ating sarili kundi ang tumulong sa ating kapwa – na magpakain sa mga nagugutom, magbigay inumin sa mga nauuhaw, tanggapin at patuluyin sa bahay ang mga estranghero, bihisan ang mga walang damit, dalawin ang mga may sakit at puntahan ang mga bilanggo. Sinabi pa niya na anuman ang ginawa natin sa isa sa pinakamaliit na kapatid niya ay parang ginawa na rin natin sa kaniya.

Konbinienteng dahilan ang kahirapan at kakulangan ng abilidad o edukasyon para hindi tayo tumulong sa ating kapwa.

Ang dahilan ng ilan: “Anong maibibigay ko mahirap lamang ako?”

“Anong maibabahagi ko eh hindi nga ako nakapagkolehiyo?”

“Anong magagawa ko ang bata bata ko pa?”

Noong dalawang taong gulang si Kesz Valdez, napilitan siyang mamulot ng kung anu-anong bagay sa isang tambakan ng basura para maibenta at matustusan ang bisyo sa droga at pag-inom ng

kaniyang tatay. Lumayas siya sa gulang na apat at namuhay sa lansangan. Natutulog siya sa isang sementeryo kasama ng ibang mga batang lansangan. Isang gabi, habang namumulot ng mga gamit mula sa basurahan, nahulog siya sa isang tumpok ng mga nasusunog na gulong ng sasakyan. Napinsala ang kaniyang braso. Nang siya ay pitong taon ang gulang, kinupkop siya ng isang community worker na si Harnin Manalaysay. Sa gulang na walo, tinatag niya ang Championing Community Children, isang organisasyon na naglalayong magbigay pag-asa at ipakita sa mga batang lansangan na kaya nilang baguhin ang kanilang buhay at maging inspirasyon sa iba. Namimigay sila ng mga bagay tulad ng tsinelas, laruan, gamit sa eskuwelahan. Nagtuturo rin sila ng tungkol sa kalinisan sa katawan, tamang pagkain at sa karapatan ng mga bata. Libo-libong mga bata ang natulungan ng organisasyong ito sa iba’t ibang komunidad sa Pilipinas. Noong 2012, sa gulang na 13, nakatanggap si Kesz ng pambihirang award – ang International Children’s Nobel Peace Prize na ang seremonya

ay ginagap sa Netherlands. Siya rin ang kauna-unahang Southeast Asian na nakatanggap ng gayong gantimpala at siya ang pinakabata sa lahat ng mga finalists na nominado sa gantimpalang iyon.

Hindi naging dahilan ang mapait na nakaraan, kahirapan at pagiging bata ni Kesz Valdez para hindi siya tumulong sa kaniyang kapwa. Totoong inampon siya ng isang lalaking nagngangalang Harnin Manalaysay pero hindi ganoon kayaman ang lalaking ito.

May puso lamang ito na handang tumulong. Bilang isang Kristiyano alam ni Kesz na ang Diyos ang nagbigay sa kaniya ng pag-asang magkaroon ng bagong buhay at siya rin ang nagpadala kay Harnin para matulungan siya. Naranasan niya ang kadakilaan ng Diyos sa kaniyang buhay at pinili rin niya na maging dakila sa pamamagitan ng pagtulong sa kaniyang kapwa.

Minsan naghihintay tayong gumanda ang ating kalagayan bago tayo tumulong. Sasabihin natin “Kapag may maganda na tayong trabaho o pag lumaki na ang suweldo natin, magbibigay tayo ng malaki sa simbahan. O pag napromote tayo, maraming tao ang tutulungan natin. Kapag hindi na tayo masyadong busy, sasali na tayo sa mga proyekto ng pagkakawanggawa.

Madalas tumitingin tayo sa sarili nating limitasyon sa halip

na manalig tayo sa kapangyarihan ng Diyos kayat hindi tayo makasulong para tumulong sa ating kapwa.

Sa biblia sa Juan: 1-14, mababasang inalay ng isang batang lalaki ang kaniyang baon na sapat lamang para pakainin ang isang tao. Pero dahil hindi siya nagmaramot, gumawa ng himala ang Diyos at pinarami ang baon niyang tinapay at isda para pakainin ang libu-libong taong gutom na gutom. At nang mabusog na ang lahat, nakapuno pa sila ng 12 basket na sobra mula sa limang tinapay.

Anuman ang mayroon tayo, kaunti man o marami, kaya itong gamitin ng Diyos para pagyamanin ang tao sa paligid natin. Sa mahirap na pamilya lumaki si Efren Peñaflorida. Anak siya ng isang tricycle driver at nakatira sila malapit sa tambakan ng basura. Dahil sa tulong ng scholarship at ng World Vision, nakapagtapos siya ng pag-aaral.

Noong 1997, sa gulang na 16, sinimulan niya ang isang grupo na kabataan na may layuning tulungan ang mga kabataan na nasa lansangan. Marami kasing kabataan ang tumigil na sa pag-aaral sa murang edad para maghanapbuhay kaya nakaisip siya ng “kariton classroom.” May hila hila silang kariton na may mga libro, ballpen, silya at mesa at

pupuntahan nila ang mga bata na nasa sementeryo at sa tambakan ng basura at doon nila tuturuan ang mga bata na magbasa at magsulat. Nagbebenta sila ng bote at dyaryo para matustusan ang kanilang proyekto. Mula sa 9,000 nominado, si Efren ang napili bilang CNN Hero of the Year para sa taong 2009 dahil sa pambihirang kontribusyon niya sa kabataan sa kaniyang comunidad Kaibigan, may magagawa ka para sa iyong kapwa anuman ang katayuan at kalagayan mo. Sa paraang iyan nagiging makabuluhan ang iyong buhay.

“I think I’m gonna like it here.” École Leila North Community School’s production of Annie Jr.

By Judianne Jayme Pilipino Express was treated to a musical evening at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP) for the production of Annie Jr. as presented by École Leila North Community School.

As an aside, I had done my student teaching at this school, and I was involved in their 2012 production of Alice in Wonderland Jr., so I came with background knowledge of the amount of work that goes into a production like this. There is a lengthy process of auditioning, casting, after-school and lunchtime rehearsals, as well as the creation of costumes, backdrops, and sets. This entire

process is made possible by dedicated staff members who volunteer their time and efforts for the production, as well as the students themselves who use their strengths – from the talented cast members to the backstage crew, to the makeup and hair teams, and even the photographers and promoters. In total, it was announced that there was an estimated 120 students involved between the two separate casts and crew.

On the night we attended, the original Annie and Rooster from Leila North’s first production of the show in 2003-2004 were in the audience. It was the first year for artistic director Darren Roy

and musical director Rebecca Brown, both educators at the school. This year’s production was a celebration, an anniversary show, which involved alumnae of past musical productions who were all acknowledged in the audience, and on stage, after curtain call.

A conversation with artistic director Darren Roy after the show revealed that this was the first time Leila North has used the MTYP as their venue, and they greatly appreciate not only the facility itself, but also the staff’s attitude towards youth and the arts. The stage was beautifully designed with half of the stage working as the orphanage and

the other half as the Warbucks Mansion. There were creative scene changes that transported the audience from these two main scenes to the streets of New York City and the NBC Radio studio.

Kaiya Biluan, playing the title character of Annie in Cast 2, charmed the audience with both her acting and musical skills. She demonstrated the right balance between street savvy wit, a yearning for family, and awestruck innocence that is so essential for the role. The choreography with the orphans really brought to life the classic song Hard-Knock-Life as they moved around the stage with their props.

Casting children for adult roles can be a challenging task, but Leila North’s casting of Liliana Cilia as the role of orphanage director Miss Hannigan was impressive. She had maturity in

MARCH 16 - 31, 2015 her acting skills that went beyond her years as she sang about her woes having to watch over Little Girls all day. The same can be said of the serious and reserved characters portrayed by Josh Jamora as Mr. Warbucks and Melody Cacao as his personal assistant, Grace.

This particular show was the final performance for Cast 2 and two students brought tokens of their appreciation to Mr. Roy and Ms. Brown. They thanked their teachers for encouraging them to chase their dreams when they’re older. In the arts, that encouragement goes a long way. It is so important to remind students that the sun really will come out Tomorrow despite challenges.

In good hands – MFBC welcomes new leaders

By Judianne Jayme The newly renovated Royal Bank of Canada Main Branch opened its doors on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2015 to celebrate leadership in the community of entrepreneurs. The Manitoba Filipino Business Council Inc. (MFBC) hosted an evening to celebrate the outgoing Board of the Directors and introduce community members to their incoming successors who took their oaths, led by Gary Sarcida of PKF Lawyers firm, at this inaugural event.

The venue had a buzz of excitement and gratitude, as attendees took equal time to thank the outgoing team while welcoming in the new set of leaders. Family, friends, supporters, and dignitaries including the Lieutenant Governor – His Honour, The Honourable Philip S. Lee, C.M., O.M. and his wife, Her Honour Anita Lee attend the event. Also in attendance were our Minister of Multiculturalism and Literacy, Flor Marcelino, and recentlyelected Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman, who brought greetings and praise for the growth that the organization has had since its formal launch in November 2011. Mayor Bowman wished

for the continued success of the organization, saying, “[the MFBC’s] success is Winnipeg’s success.”

Co-founders Cynthia and Jon Reyes took the stage to share the achievements and history of the organization. Reyes explained that the organization began as a way to fill the needs of our community, especially for a community known for its warmth, hospitality, dedication, and hardworking people. He acknowledged that the most important resource any business can have is found in its human resources, as he recognized the executive board members during his term, as well as key sponsors and volunteers for their support.

Reyes also took time to explain that they have established strong connections with the World Trade Centre in the Philippines to further help business owners and entrepreneurs in Winnipeg who would like to extend their business overseas. He described that leadership is about service and humility. It’s about rolling up your sleeves and recognizing that you are not higher than anyone – you are serving others, you are learning from fellow business owners, and you are accountable no matter what position you hold.

Hipolito Alibin Jr. succeeds

Reyes as the President of the MFBC and promises to continue to build networks and support the new generation of entrepreneurs, contributing to the economy and growth of our community and city. Alibin seeks to collaborate with many other groups and organizations and is inviting community members into open dialogues to set goals that can be achieved together. He has a goal to reach out to youths in the community to help them make their impact in the business world. He invites the community to future events and to keep in the loop by connecting with MFBC via social media and their official website.
