As a journalist, I’m a stickler for freedom of speech. For one thing, my whole livelihood depends on my ability to write or say anything I need to express, be it an opinion piece, a feature, or a straight news article. Beyond that, I believe freedom of speech is the very foundation of a democratic society. Only when we are able to express ourselves freely can we truly call ourselves democratic and free. The greatest threat to authoritarianism and dictatorship is freedom of speech, and we as a nation saw this when the dictator Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law in 1972. One of the first things he targeted was the media. He had newspapers and TV and radio stations shut down and had around 8,000 people — some of them journalists, all of them voices of dissent — arrested.

All in one day. According to the Official Gazette (gov.ph), these are what Marcos ordered closed on September 23, 1972 (the actual day of the proclamation of martial law): 292 radio stations 7 television stations 66 community newspapers 11 English weekly magazines 7 major English dailies 4 Chinese dailies 3 Filipino dailies

1 English-Filipino daily 1 Spanish daily Among the journalists arrested were Max Soliven, Chino Roces, Teodoro Locsin Sr., Hernando Abaya, Luis Mauricio, Luis Beltran, Amando Doronilla, and Ernesto Granada (the Official Gazette does not list those arrested after September 23). Marcos knew the power of the media and how liberating it is to hear dissenting views and voices that are not government’s. He knew that he could only proceed with his plan of domination if the voices of the people were silenced. As they say, the first casualty of martial law was freedom of speech.

Today, 44 years later, some people seem to have learned little. A person named Paul Quilét believes it is his (and his believers’) right and duty to silence sexy star/dancer-turned social media influencer Mocha Uson for the following reason: “Mocha Uson, a Filipino entertainer-turned-Duterte diehard supporter uses her Facebook page to spread fictitious/ unsupported claims, fake news, and false information about pressing issues in the Philippines, from the role the USAID plays in the country to news concerning government officials

Taking down freedom of speech and other personalities, eliciting unwarranted hate from the public.

The said Facebook page widens the rift between those who support the current administration and those who are critical of it.”

As I write this (October 25, 2016), the petition has gotten 30,845 supporters, 4,155 signatures shy of the 35,000 goal.

This means 30,845 people believe with Kulet —er, Quilét — that Mocha Uson does not have the same right as they to express herself. Now I do not know Mocha personally, but I do know that she is one of the most influential people on social media right now in the Philippines. Her blog has 4.3 million followers to date, while Rappler has 2.9 million and the Philippine Daily Inquirer has 2.6 million (only ABS-CBN News has more followers at 11.7 million). But more than just followers, Mocha trumps these two in terms of engagement, which is a measure of likes, comments, and shares — which shows that her followers are not passive readers but active members of her community. As of August, Mocha has an engagement of 1.2 million, leaving behind Rappler (408

thousand) and the Inquirer (350 thousand). Maybe it’s this massive influence that has prompted Quilét (and whoever is behind him) to try and take Mocha’s blog down.

To be sure Mocha has had her share of mistakes, but most of the things she posts are verified and verifiable. She is biased, of course, but she has never claimed not to be. Her followers accept this and so they keep engaging her. The media networks, on the other hand, have had a history of getting it wrong when it comes to Duterte (the Hitler remark and his alleged cursing of US President Barack Obama, both of which were based on misquotes). That Quilét would target only Mocha is the height of one-sidedness and hypocrisy.

People say they don’t like dictatorship, but they don’t think twice about silencing Mocha Uson. Go figure.

Citizenship Week A week in October (10 to16) is usually set aside in Canada as Citizenship Week. In the past 10 years Canada has welcomed 1,500,000 new Canadians. It is a time all Canadians, native born and naturalized, should take some time to think about what it means to be Canadian. There were many celebrations across the country, including special citizenship ceremonies, guided walks and the illumination of the sails of Vancouver’s Canada Place, the Calgary Tower, the Olympic Plaza, Toronto’s CN Tower and Montreal’s City Hall and Biosphere with the colours of the Canadian flag.

In Winnipeg, a citizenship ceremony for 20 new citizens was held at the Museum for Human Rights with the Honourable John McCallum, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and the Honourable

Ian Wishart, Manitoba Minister of Education and Training and Minister responsible for immigration attending.

The Museum highlights the challenges faced by many getting to Canada; their sacrifices and their contributions to Canada.

The country is made up of many different people from different lands; all united under one flag.

Minister McCallum noted: “In Canada, our diversity is our strength. We welcome people from around the world to come here, settle, integrate, contribute and become citizens. Citizenship Week is a time for all Canadians to reflect on the rights and responsibilities that we share as Canadians and to celebrate Canada’s vast diversity.”

The rights of Canadians include a democratic right to vote, language rights, equality rights, legal rights, mobility rights,

freedom of religion, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly and association. Just think of other countries where these rights are non-existent.

Where you can be arrested without warrant, denied the right to vote for your government and have your freedoms greatly curtailed.

Just think about journalists and political opponents who were killed in Putin’s Russia or the unfortunate people of Aleppo or Mozul, caught in the middle of a deadly war. As Canadians, we also have the right to apply for a Canadian passport, which gives us status and protection abroad and allows us to enter Canada.

With rights come responsibilities. All Canadian citizens have the responsibilities to respect the rights and freedoms of others, to obey Canada’s laws, to participate in the democratic process and to respect Canada’s two (2) official languages and multicultural heritage. We are not the same as the Americans to the South because we encourage cultural diversity, the language, celebrations and foods of the

countries our families came from.

Our diverse population is made up of over 200 ethnic groups, with 13 of those groups numbering over one million.

More than one in five Canadians were born outside Canada. This is our strength and a source of great pride. In celebrations held across the land on Citizenship Week approximately 2,800 people became citizens at 46 ceremonies across Canada. The total number of new citizens in 2015 was 252,175.

Next year the celebrations will become larger and they are set to celebrate 70 years of Canadian citizenship and Canada’s 150th birthday. It is always a good time to celebrate Canada. We continue to set an example of a safe haven for refugees and a choice country for immigration. Encourage your friends and families to apply to Canada and, once here, work towards becoming full contributing members of the society, as Canadian citizens.

Mud jacking Concrete collapses when the underlying sub-base aggregates scour due to insufficient compaction or natural erosion.

Sunken concrete can result in various structural defects such as bowed basement walls, cracked foundations, uneven concrete pads, recessed sidewalks, un-level concrete junctions, foundation settling and failed retaining walls. If these minor defects are not remedied, it can escalate to major structural problems and water runoff. Aside from being an aesthetic issue, uneven surfaces pose major trip hazards to pedestrians, thereby decreasing the functionality of sidewalks and driveways.

The common solution for uneven foundations or sinking driveways and sidewalks is to demolish the old concrete slab and pour a new one. However, this process is costly and takes a considerable amount of time and inconvenience. Nowadays,

we use an alternative solution that is less intensive, called mud jacking, also known as slab jacking, pressure grouting, or concrete levelling. Mud jacking is the process of injecting concrete slurry beneath the sunken concrete slab in order to raise it back into its original elevation.

The installer drills small holes into the concrete, then slurry, composed of different materials, such as cement, sand, soil, limestone, bentonite clay, water or expanding polymers, is pumped into it. The appropriate slurry depends on the type of application and the installer’s preference. The injected slurry fills any voids and forces the concrete to rise back into place. The drilled holes are then patched up with hydraulic cement. After a curing period of 1-2 days, the slurry strengthens and amalgamates the underlying soil, which prevents the slab from sinking further. Although

mud jacking is not a complicated process, it must be done only by trained tradespeople because amateur or sloppy workmanship can lead to more damage. The location of the underground utility lines such as electrical lines, drain pipes, and sewers must be identified first to evaluate if such lines can withstand the mudjacking process.

Advantages of mud jacking over the traditional way of demolishing and re-pouring concrete include: • Environmentally friendly – mud jacking rehabilitates the existing concrete that could have ended up in the landfill; • Fast installation – mud jacking may only take hours, whereas concrete pouring could take days depending on the curing time; • Inexpensive – because there is no demolition involved, the price of mud jacking is approximately half as much as concrete replacement; and • Efficiency – mud jacking requires less labour, equipment, and disturbance to the surrounding area.

However, mud jacking has some limitations in situations such as: • The presence of a sinkhole or swampy soil underneath the pavement; • When the concrete surface is spalling or the remaining concrete has completely collapsed. The mud jacking process could further damage the concrete

surface even after it is elevated back into place; • The concrete has swollen up due to expansive soil, in which the only solution for this is to demolish and re-pour the cement.

DMCI’s EAL ambassadors welcome newcomers

By Ana Daniella Ilagan Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute’s (DMCI) English as an Additional Language (EAL) ambassadors administered the annual in-school Orientation Day to welcome immigrants and prospective students on September 7.

Approximately 15 ambassadors arranged the orientation with presentations about DMCI’s extra-curricular activities and clubs, school rules, and an overview of the winter season in Winnipeg, with tips on what to wear and what activities to do during that season.

There were also conventional icebreakers at the start of the orientation to help the newcomers get to know each other. One favourite icebreaker was the “dice game” that has also been practiced by the EAL ambassadors for years.

Among the members of EAL ambassadors, two are Filipino ambassador-mentors and eight are Filipino ambassadors. They make up most of the EAL ambassador

members.

Mrs. Lorraine Ilagan, EAL English teacher, advisor of EAL ambassadors and also a full Filipino, said she has been spearheading the Orientation Days for newcomers since 2011, taking over for Ms. Perlmutter, who originally started the program. When asked why DMCI started having EAL ambassadors, she said, “As a department, we wanted to create orientation days for our newcomer kids.” Its members were always composed of newcomers from previous school years.

Mary Joy Rivera, one of the EAL ambassador’s mentors and a graduating student, said she has been a member of the group for three years, which establishes her seniority among the members.

She added that she became interested in joining the group when she first experienced the Orientation Day herself when she was in Grade 9.

“It improved my self-esteem, nabawasan ‘yung shyness ko, and it’s a good feeling na nakakatulong sa newcomers,”

she answered when asked how her involvement as an EAL ambassador impacted her social skills. She added that she wanted to pay the EAL ambassador program back for welcoming her,

Every year, since 2009, when EAL ambassadors were pioneered, DMCI has welcomed immigrants from all over the world with its Orientation Day.

The majority of nationalities that the school has accommodated in the past years are students from the Philippines, followed by students from Sudan and Eritrea, according to Mrs. Ilagan.

My family history Isabella Ramirez was awarded the ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence last June based on her high school GPA, a group interview, and an essay based on an oral history interview she conducted. The following essay was her submission.

Filipinos are known for their strong family ties. We value the love of our family and we work hard to make them proud.

I believe that remembering our family history and conserving our Filipino heritage is very important, especially for those of us who no longer live in the Philippines. For the Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence, I chose to interview my father, Lazaro Ramirez.

My first question for my father was, “why is family history so important?” He had four sisters growing up, and money was a constant struggle for his family.

There never seemed to be enough to support all of them.

“I would spend my afternoons after school selling bananaque, fish balls, kwek-kwek and barbeque. That was every day, even on weekends,” he said.

He remembers his own mother telling him, “We are very poor anak; we are small compared to other people. We should not put ourselves out there; we are not as important as the rest of them.”

My father was forced to become the breadwinner of his family when he was still a teenager, following the death of his father. He worked in Jollibee all throughout his high school and college years. Remembering his family and the struggles he experienced motivates my father to provide for us.

“Life was so hard anak, I do not want you and your mother to experience the hardships that I went through before,” he exclaims.

He says that family history is important because, “what was done in the past pushes us to do better at the present, and for the future.”

My second question was, “how can we keep in touch with our Filipino roots now that we live in Canada?” His answer was “that’s very simple, we can never truly lose our Filipino heritage, it is always there.” We are “westernized” when we move

to Canada. We have O Canada instead of Lupang Hinirang, poutine instead of sinigang, and eternal winter instead of endless sunshine and warmth. Despite this, we still practice our Filipino ways.

We bless and say, “mano po,” to our elders during parties where our titas are not content until our bellies are full and we have extra food to baon home. We still gather around when Pambansang Kamao Manny Pacquiao has a fight and the crime rate in the Philippines drops.

We rejoiced when Pia Wurtzbach was crowned as Miss Universe as being “confidently beautiful with a heart.” We always have long distance calls and frequent Skype sessions with our loved ones back home. “It is important to fit in and adjust to life here in Canada, but it is also valuable to remember where we came from,” says my father.

My parents tell me that the main reason we moved to Canada was to ensure a better future for us.

The sacrifices my parents made for our family are a constant reminder to myself to work harder and do well here. My family history is my father’s humble beginnings and the man that he is today. It is my mother’s hopes and dreams as a child to travel the world and have the best future possible. It is my grandfather’s journey from

Remembering Vimy OTTAWA – The 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge will be remembered in April 2017 with commemorative ceremonies on April 9, 2017, at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France, the National War Memorial in Ottawa, and in major cities across the country.

The Canadian government will take a delegation over to France during the week of April 5 - 12, 2017.

The First World War’s Battle of Vimy Ridge was fought April 9 to 12, 1917, in northern France.

There, the Canadian Corps won a remarkable victory over the Germans, capturing the heavily defended ridge that the Allies had previously attempted to take.

This beautiful and richly symbolic monument commemorates Canadians who served during the bloody First World War. Engraved on its walls are the names of the 11,285 Canadians who died in France and have no known grave.

Two towering pylons sitting on a massive base represent Canada and France. The monument also incorporates 20 large stone sculptures of figures that represent ideals for which Canada fought, such as truth, justice, hope and peace.

In the background of the poster, “Canada Bereft” is featured in detail: a striking statue of a woman, her chin forlornly resting

on her hand as she gazes downward brooding over the graves of her valiant dead. The statue represents those who were left behind to mourn their loss.

2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Confederation. It is very fitting that this same year includes the centenary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, where many suggest that Canada came of age as a nation.

The single girl & feng shui This is a case study of two women with tangled romantic pasts and unrealistic expectations.

There are two single girls who desperately wanted to find a man that made them happy and who wanted to marry them. Candice was attractive, smart and never married. Shelby had been married twice, but both times the marriage broke up and it turned out that the man wasn’t at all whom she thought she’d married - he seemed to change.

Both women have scars and blocks in their lives and homes that are stopping them from new relationships.

In feng shui, a block is something that stops energy.

Sometimes the block is obvious, like a tree opposite your front door. Other times, the block is something subtler. What both women had were blocks to their happiness despite yearning for a new love to enter the lives.

Could feng shui help them?

Candice had a nice apartment, a solid job and was financially sound. Even so, she longed to have someone in her life that was her “forever man.” In talking with her, it turns out that Candice didn’t just stop living because she didn’t have a husband.

What she did, though, was to stay frozen in time.

In high school, Candice had a long-term boyfriend. They were happy together and enjoyed each other’s company, and didn’t have that usual up and down kind of relationship so common with young love. They dated through high school and when Candice was a sophomore in college, she decided that she’d been with David long enough and that she needed to see the world, so she broke up with him.

Fast forward, two decades and David has moved on, married and had children. Candice thought her move to greener pastures was going to help her grow. Instead, she saw him move on and saw her own romantic life come to a complete standstill. While she says she is no longer in love with him, Candice can’t part with her shoebox of movie and concert tickets she and David went to together, pictures from prom, and mementos from their prior relationship.

Candice has worked very hard to make her life meaningful and happy and says she’s ready for a new relationship. But is she really if she holds on to her shoebox “time capsule” that keeps her frozen in a relationship that she now looks at as her last and only significant relationship she’s ever had? The relationship she wants so desperately never materializes because she’s in a ghost relationship with a memory.

The box represents a block to her future by keeping her forever frozen in an earlier time.

This is a good example of an internal feng shui block.

Blocks don’t have to be actual physical things like a large piece of furniture or a tree. Sometimes it’s the chain on your mind that prevents moving forward. These items, like Candice’s shoebox, that we hold onto, are what I call the “unthrowables”; these are the things we keep because they represent a time when we were happy, were loved, were hopeful.

But in order to break those chains, unthrowables need to be removed from our homes so that that energetic barrier is removed.

Shelby is another successful single woman who always puts herself out for others.

She gets too involved early on

in a relationship and gives away the best part of herself before the other party makes a clear commitment.

This is true in friendships and love relationships. Consequently, she feels used by friends and abandoned by the men she married because of her tendency to live in castles in the sky versus seeing the reality of who these people really are. She also lives in a cluttered home because “shopping never let me down.”

For Shelby, the block is to see her own worth and not to project extra worthiness onto people who will only disappoint her. In feng shui, she needs to create balance of giving and receiving. Her block is being open to receiving and the inevitable resentment of the people who didn’t live up to her lofty expectations of them.

When you’re always the giver, it puts the control in your hands, or so it seems. The truth is, though, that we must both give and receive.

When we can truly receive, we live in a reciprocal relationship that doesn’t need to be controlled because it has room to grow and doesn’t wither due to unrealistic expectations that are set too soon.

And clutter stops your ability to grow.

When shopping doesn’t let you down, like Shelby’s case, it can be that things become a substitute for people. In this case, shopping can become a block. By curbing shopping, seeing people for who they are and not putting herself out so much to others, Shelby can create an opening - a clear space - where she can flourish and the relationships she forms have room for growth because they allow her to receive. Better still, Shelby allows them to be who they really are now and not what her fantasies dictate.

What should I do with my old wedding albums? How do I just throw them away?

Answer: Images are the way we take in the world. It’s the way our dreams speak to us at night. Holding on to these old images of your past can keep you trapped in them.

No doubt, a wedding album is very expensive and it’s hard to actually, physically, “throw away” a relationship the way throwing a photo album does, but it’s important that you do.

Take the albums and place them in a trash bag and then drive them to a dumpster or trash disposal someplace away from your house.

Sometimes just knowing they’re in your own trash can fill you with remorse. But before you do this, visualize doing it and then putting them in the trash. See yourself washed in light as you release the old images of your old life and imagine a window opening and air blowing through.

When you take the albums to a dumpster or trash can, take in a deep breath and exhale loudly as you place the albums into the trash.

Visualize black smoke coming out of your nose. Continue taking deep cleansing breaths as you walk away. Then, take yourself out somewhere to be with people, maybe to a mall or a restaurant or a bookstore. Sit down and have a cup of coffee or tea and take in your newfound freedom.

It’s important that you breathe through this.

Breath is one of the ways we release pain – or hold on to it. In the breakthrough book, Heal Back Pain Forever, the author, Dr. John Sarno, talks about people who are in pain often breathe very shallow and often don’t take deep breaths.

Nurses will tell you that if you hold in your breath as you receive an injection and then release it as the needle goes in, there is much less discomfort. Make sure you breathe in and out as you release those things that no longer serve you or the life you want and dream of.

Helping hands at Winnipeg Harvest When the Filipino Members Chapter of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (FMC-APEGM) first raised the idea of choosing a meaningful community service through a survey, Susan Lim, EngineerIn-Training, responded, “This is one of the best ideas to give back to the community. I’ll be participating for sure.”

This and other positive feedback inspired the FMC executive committee to turn to Winnipeg Harvest to schedule an afternoon of group volunteering activity. This is the first time we connected our members to help out in a charitable institution, thereby accomplishing one of the chapter objectives – to engage and participate in community services.

On the afternoon of October 22nd, more than 20 members and friends of FMC showed up and enthusiastically gathered at Winnipeg Harvest’s office. Most volunteers were first-timers, who had no idea what to expect, except that they are there to help out with sorting, bagging or packaging.

As this is the chapter’s first involvement with Winnipeg Harvest, an hour of orientation and a quick tour of the facility was included as part of the afternoon’s itinerary.

At this orientation, we were provided with intangible benefits, such as getting to know some of the myths and facts about Winnipeg Harvest. Among them, the common public perception that they are a food bank, when indeed they are not. We learned

We were asked to guess how many people they currently serve per month, which we replied with a figure we thought was already an high estimate, but fell way below the number given us. Winnipeg Harvest currently serves over 60,000 persons per month with over 40 per cent being children under 18 years of age. There’s also the intention to help break the cycle of unemployment by offering training and learning opportunities to those they serve.

A tour of the facility showed us what happens to the food they gather, areas where they provide training, where they provide food and other services they offer to volunteers. With the overwhelming amount of food donations they receive on a daily basis, it is no wonder why help from volunteer groups are greatly needed.

For the volunteering part, we were split into two groups. One group bagged and re-packed flour, while the other group went to sorting area. While there and doing the charitable work, the chapter members also had a chance to chat, catch up with old acquaintances and get to know new members and friends.

The afternoon went by quickly and before we knew it, our volunteering time was over.

Indeed, nothing feels quite as good as helping out and it was extremely rewarding to

see the joy and satisfaction on everyone’s faces, knowing that the three hours spent that afternoon was one of the best uses of their precious time. With what I witnessed, I am confident that this will be the first of many community service projects that

“Iyon daw ang magiging bahay niya, doon daw siya titira, pero iilang hakbang lang naman ang pagitan noon sa first house na ipinagawa niya. Magsasarili na raw siya, pero halos magkarugtong lang naman ang dalawang bahay na ipinatayo niya,” natatawang papuri ni Mayora Tates Gana sa kaniyang anak-anakan.

Hindi inoobliga ng kaniyang pamilya si Daniel. May sariling career bilang aktres-TV host si Karla Estrada, Board Member naman sa Nueva Ecija ang kaniyang amang si Rommel Padilla, pero nagkukusa ang sikat na heartthrob.

Basta nakalibre siya sa matindi niyang schedule ay pinepremyuhan ni Daniel ang kaniyang sarili, nagbabakasyon siya sa ibang bansa, pero kasama niya ang buo niyang pamilya at ilang piling-piling kaibigan.

Paul Ong’s Christmas concert for a cause

By Judianne Jayme Following the success of his last solo concert a year ago, Pilipino Express had a chance to interview Paul Ong to discuss his brand new album, Broadway Classics, and his upcoming concert next month.

Pilipino Express (PE): Your upcoming concert is called “A Christmas Concert for a Cause.”

Tell us more about the cause you are supporting. What inspired you to support this cause?

Paul Ong (PO): This year, the cause that the show will be supporting is the students of General Wolfe School, an inner city school in the West End. I am very excited about the show this year because it will not only give proceeds of the show back to the school for the benefit of the students, but it will also provide opportunity for the students to showcase their talents and perform. It is my hope that through this opportunity, they will feel empowered and motivated to keep pursuing their goals and honing their gifts to maximize their fullest potential.

My profession as a teacher and advocacy to empower youth has inspired me to do this. It has been a goal and a dream of mine to do a show where the beneficiary performs as part of the show. It allows for the beneficiary opportunities to share their talents, and it also allows audiences to have a glimpse of who the beneficiaries are.

The concert will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at Portage Avenue Church, 1420 Portage Avenue (across Rae and Jerry’s Restaurant). The show starts at 6:30 p.m. and doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 each

PO: This year’s concert will have a different set of songs compared to my previous two concerts in April and October of 2015. This year’s show comes with an extra surprise, as I am launching and releasing my album in the show, and audiences can purchase the album during the event. I am thrilled to be sharing this special moment to all my supporters, and audiences that evening. Supporters and audiences can expect that I will be doing a few songs from the album, and well as some inspirational, heart-warming songs, and of course, Christmas carols. A wellorganized show has always been part of what I strive for in every single concert that I organize, and most important, a well prepared and thought-out program and song selection.

PE: How would you describe the style and track selection of your new album?

PO: The title of my album, Paul Ong: Broadway Classics speaks a lot about the style of the songs in the album. All the songs in the album are from Broadway Musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, West Side Story, Sound of Music, The Music Man, and other Broadway staples. These songs were chosen based on how they relate to my journey in life. It is a mix of songs that speaks about dreams, hope and love. All of the songs in the album are derived from different Broadway Musicals and several of these songs are quite familiar songs, which many of us would not have thought were masipag siya, matiyaga,” papuri pa ni AiAi sa kaniyang darling.

Pero dahil sa tatanggaping Papal award ng aktres ay mukhang mababawasan na ang taon ng kanilang paghihintay, mula sa apat na taon ay magiging dalawa na lang iyon, bawal silang magsiping nang hindi pa sila ikinakasal.

from a musical. Each of these tracks have been re-arranged and given a bit of a twist! And one more thing I want to mention is that the songs in the CD offer something different from my live performances – especially the songs that I often do during live performances. Get your copies to find out.

PE: What were the challenges when creating your album?

PO: Looking back, some of the challenges in creating the album were picking the songs, and thinking of the theme.

Creating an album can be quite intensive and requires a lot of focus, attention to detail, paperwork, and cost. Despite the many challenges, I would say that the process of making the album was a great learning experience and quite fulfilling. The results of dedication, hard work and commitment in making sure

that we did our very best for the album, is very rewarding.

PE: Where and when can people purchase your album?

PO: People can purchase my album at the concert. We will also make the album available at most of my upcoming public engagements.

Aside from events, it will also be sold in some of our local businesses and establishments. Details and announcements will be made very soon. We are also in the process of arranging for online selling and we will update our supporters as soon as we are able to get more information.

PE: With the holidays approaching, if you were invited to contribute only one song for a holiday compilation, what would be your go-to holiday song?

PO: I would like to think it is O Holy Night. This is one of my favourite holiday songs of all time

as it speaks of the true essence of the season.

At ang tunay na bayani sa mata ng Diyos ay walang pinipiling taong kaniyang tutulungan. May kuwento si Hesus na mababasa sa biblia sa aklat ng Lukas 10.

May isang Hudyong naglalakbay mula sa Jerusalem papuntang Jerico. Hinarang siya ng mga tulisan at halos patay na nang siya ay iwan ng mga ito.

Nagkataong dumaan doon ang isang pari at pagkakita sa taong nakahandusay, siya’y lumihis at nagpatuloy ng kaniyang lakad.

Dumaan din ang isang Levita na siyang kalahi ng mga pari noong panahon na iyon. Tiningnan lamang niya ang lalaking biktima ng karahasan at nagpatuloy ito ng kaniyang lakad. Ngunit may isang

Samaritanong naglalakbay na napadaan doon. Nakita niya ang biktima at siya’y nahabag dito.

Nilapitan niya ito at binuhusan ng langis at alak ang mga sugat nito saka binalutan ng tela. Sinakay niya ang biktima sa kaniyang sinasakyang hayop at dinala niya ito sa isang bahay panuluyan na kung sa ating panahon ay parang isang maliit na hotel. Inalagaan niya ang lalaki. Kinabukasan, dumukot siya ng pera para ipambayad sa mayari ng bahay panuluyan. Binilinan ng Samaritano ang may-ari na alagaan ang sugatang lalaki at kung magkano man ang kulang pa niya sa pagpapanatili ng lalaki at sa pagpapagaling nito, babayaran niya ito sa kaniyang pagbabalik.

Ang sabi ni Hesus, sa tatlong nakakita sa sugatang lalaki, ang Samaritano ang nagpakita ng pakikipagkapwa. At iyan din ang nais ng Diyos na gawin natin.

Kung susuriin natin ng husto, ang pari at ang Levita ay kapwa kababayan ng biktima pero hindi nila tinulungan ang ito. Ang pari ay tinuturing na napakabanal na tao at ang Levita ay relihiyoso rin pero naipamuhay ba nila ang kanilang mga pinaniniwalaan na makadiyos na prinsipyo? Ang sabi sa biblia sa Santiago 1:27 “Ganito ang puro at walang bahid na relihiyon – ang tulungan ang mga ulila at mga babaeng balo sa kanilang kahirapan.” Samakatuwid, ang ating relihiyon ay naipapahayag natin sa pagtulong sa mga taong nangangailangan.

Alam niyo ba kung bakit kahangahanga ang ginawa ng

Samaritano? Dahil tinulungan niya ang kaniyang kaaway. Ang biktima ay isang Hudyo. Ang mga Hudyo at mga Samaritano ay matagal nang may alitan. Hindi sila nakikisama sa isa’t isa. Ito ang kaniyang sinabi, “May riles ng tren sa likod ng aming maliit ng simbahan at tuwing Linggo ng umaga, naririnig namin ang pito ng tren at ang ugong ng mga gulong nito. Hindi kami mapakali kapag naririnig namin ang mga iyak na nagmumula sa tren habang ito’y dumadaan sa aming simbahan. Alam namin ang nilalaman ng tren ay ang mga Hudyo na isinakay na parang mga hayop sa loob. Linggo-linggo, huhuni ang pito. pa naming lalakasan ang aming pag-awit. Lumipas ang mga taon at walang nagsasalita tungkol sa bagay na ito. Pero patuloy kong naririnig ang pito ng tren sa aking pagtulog. O Diyos, patawarin mo ako. Patawarin mo kaming lahat na tinatawag ang aming sariling mga Kristiyano pero wala kaming ginawa.”

Ang tunay na bayani ay may malasakit sa kaniyang kapwa at gagawin nito ang lahat mapabuti lamang niya ang kalagayan ng iba.

Golfers raise Php200,000 for charity The Fil-Kam Golf Group raised P200,000 at their first annual Charity Golf Tournament, held at Kildonan Park Golf Course on June 25, 2016.

The money is in aid of Bahay Aruga, a halfway house for pediatric cancer patients in Manila. The patients, who come from poor families in rural areas all over the Philippines, receive medical assistance, medication and living accommodations while in Manila for treatment in the city’s hospitals.

Fil-Kam President Romeo Roque, Vice President Raul Bulaong, and all the members thank the 85 competitors, volunteers, and donors for their generosity.
