WINNIPEG - Reaching the milestone age of 100 years is not quite a commonplace occurance but one family in Winnipeg’s Filipino community celebrated the centenary of their matriarch last week. Mrs. Francisca Castillo Raymundo and her family celebrated her big 100 at the Fairmont Hotel on September 25, with written greetings from Queen Elizabeth II, Governor General David Johnston, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Manitoba Lieutenant Governor Janice Filmon, Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman and other members of Parliament and the Manitoba Legislature. Mommy Francisca, as she is called by family and friends alike, was born on September 20, 1916 in barrio Baginay, Manaoag, Pangasinan. The daughter of Agapito Castillo and Angela Basilio, she is the fourth of seven siblings – four girls and three

What honeymoon? As President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration nears the 100-day mark, one question comes to mind: Why was there no 100-day honeymoon between him and the media? This “honeymoon” is a longstanding tradition in the Philippines. According to the late writer Adrian Cristobal, the first 100 days is the period when the President “traditionally enjoys a honeymoon of sorts with his traditional critics — the media, the political opposition and, in the Philippine case, a vigilant Church leadership.” “The first three months are a look-see period for the media, a let’s-give-him-a-try season for the opposition. It is the first baby steps for the new administration,” Cristobal wrote. But the way the media have treated Duterte leaves no doubt that this honeymoon period had been unceremoniously dispensed with. There was hardly a word of it in the days and weeks before Duterte came to office. In fact, the media had begun attacking him starting as early as May, two months before he took office on June 30, 2016. Even the drug-related killings that were happening at the time were being blamed on him — despite the fact that the President then was still

Benigno Aquino III. This adversarial relationship started during the campaign period as the media, not used to the rather loose mouth of then-candidate Duterte, took him literally in many things he said. One time he cited an Amnesty International (AI) report that said he had killed 700 people, and the following exchange happened between him and reporters: “700 daw ang pinatay ko? Nagkulang ho sila sa kuwenta.” (They say I killed 700? They underestimated the number.) Reporters then asked him: Ilan po talaga? (How many in reality?) “Mga 1,700 (Around 1,700),” he replied. The following day, the media reported exactly that.”Duterte: I killed 700? No, make that 1,700” (Rappler); “Duterte on Amnesty International report: I killed 1,700” (Philippine Star); “Duterte says he killed 1,700, not just 700” (GMA). And of course that added fuel to the fire that was Duterte’s alleged dismal human rights record. Preposterous statements In the last days of the campaign, Duterte faced what was perhaps his toughest challenge: the allegation made by vice presidential candidate Senator Antonio Trillanes III that he had PHP227 million

deposited in an account at the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI). Describing the account, Duterte told reporters it contained “a little less than 200 million,” immediately sending the media into a frenzy. Of course it would later turn out that the account had only PHP17,817 in it, but the media had taken his exaggeration hook, line, and sinker. Before his inauguration, Duterte had also said he would give a five-minute speech — an impossibility given his longwinded campaign speeches that often included a history lesson (starting in 1521 when Magellan landed in what would be called the Philippines). But the media took it seriously, and many pundits criticized him in advance for it. As it turned out, it was a joke, and he would give this advice to reporters: “If it’s a preposterous statement, do not believe it.” “What President would give a five-minute inaugural speech? Filipinos will kill me if I did that… I’m just enjoying my last few days… I am enjoying… my rudeness,” he said. Duterte was also aware that there was a growing rift between Davao City media and the socalled “national” media — those that are based in Metro Manila. Because of his longstanding relationship with reporters in his

own city, he naturally gave the Davao crowd an advantage. “If I say something like that, don’t buy it. If the answer is preposterous or ridiculous, whisper to the one next to you from the Davao media and check if I’m serious,” he told Manila reporters. In a way, then, Duterte’s war with the media is self-inflicted. He seemed to relish playing with the media and was willing to take the risk of being misunderstood and misinterpreted. He seemed to be confident that while the media may not get what he was saying, the people would. And based on the huge support he has had since day one of his presidency, he appears to be right. So while a 100-day honeymoon with the media would have been appreciated, in reality Duterte did not need it. It was enough that the people, whose language he uses, complete with curses and other inappropriate words, understood him. Helping someone who is suicidal Not too long ago, a friend confided in me that the weekend before, she and her parents struggled with a situation concerning her brother. For the first time, he confided in them that he was having problems at work and relationship problems with his girlfriend. He was experiencing such great amounts of sadness that he sometimes struggled to get out of bed and had “scary thoughts.” He then began to cry, and had a difficult time answering their questions. Fortunately, she remembered that there was a crisis phone number that she could call, as well as a Crisis Response Centre in Winnipeg. She contacted the appropriate professionals and got her brother the help that he needed. It is important to know what to do in the event that someone you know appears suicidal. Learn what warning signs to watch out for, the proper questions to ask, and which organizations to call. Common signs of suicidal thinking

• Withdrawing from others and isolating themselves • Expressing that they feel trapped and hopeless (e.g. “There’s nothing to look forward to” or “There’s no way out of this”) • Expressing self-hatred or self-loathing (e.g. “Everyone would be better off if I wasn’t around” or “I’m not worth anything”) • Preoccupation with death, dying or violence (talking or writing a lot about it) • Increased use of drugs or alcohol • Accessing ways to harm oneself, including buying a gun or medication • Talking about suicide (e.g. “I want this all to end,” “I wish I were dead,” “I’m going to kill myself”) • Changes in sleeping or eating patterns, and mood swings • Saying goodbye to others as if they will not see them again • Giving away possessions and making sure things are in order, when it does not seem to make

sense (e.g. asking someone to care for their pet in case something happen to them) Questions to ask • How are you managing with everything? • Do you think about giving up? • Are you thinking about hurting yourself? • Are you thinking about killing yourself? • Have you ever tried to kill yourself in the past? • Have you thought about how or when you would do it? • Do you have a plan as to how you would hurt yourself? • Do you have access to weapons or pills or anything else that could be used to kill yourself? Sometimes, people think that asking direct questions about suicide would do harm because it would “give a person ideas.” However, it is helpful to talk about things openly. It is important to listen, be sympathetic, and offer hope. Do not argue with the person, act shocked and give a lecture, or promise that you will keep this a secret. In fact, you may have to break his or her confidence and tell someone, in order to keep

the person safe. It is helpful to help the person develop a set of steps that they must promise to follow during a suicidal crisis. If a suicide attempt seems very possible in the near future, call one of the crisis numbers below, dial 911, or take the person to an emergency room. Remove guns, drugs, knives, and other potentially lethal objects nearby and do not, under any circumstances, leave a suicidal person alone. Crisis resources in Manitoba 1. Another look at Express Entry The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) has been a great benefit to the province in terms of attracting needed workers for our economy. But the program was never the only option, nor is it the best option for some applicants. It is important that persons interested in immigrating to the province consider all their options. The Federal Express Entry program may be the best for you, or your family member and friends abroad. When the program opened in 2015 it was almost impossible for applicants to qualify under the Comprehensive Rating System (CRS) if they did not have a confirmed Canadian job offer (LMIA approved) or a provincial nomination. Each of these was worth 600 points and was the primary determinant in the early Invitations To Apply (ITA) for their permanent residence. The CRS process has changed drastically over the past year with a noticeable decrease in the CRS points required and in the actual number of invitations to apply issued. The most recent publication of

the Canadian Immigration News has reported that between 750 and 800 ITAs were issued over the last 9 draws and to 1,000 in the latest draw. The minimum number of points in the Comprehensive Ranking System in this draw dropped to 491, representing a drop of 47 point since the previous draw. Persons who follow the monthly draws will correctly point out that 491 is higher than earlier draws in 2016 but the important thing to notice is that applicants who do not have the benefit of the approved Canadian job offer or provincial nomination have an increased chance of being invited to apply. A quick survey of draws since January 2015 demonstrates this point (see the chart). There are a number of differences between the federal Express Entry with its CRS and EOI points under the MPNP. It is important to understand the selection process. Invitations to Apply (ITA) are not given to all interested parties, but only to a fortunate few. Potential applicants should understand that the MPNP does not accept submissions from persons who have an active submission, such

as the Expression of Interest (EOI) profile with Express Entry. The MPNP requires applicants to make a choice and not submit overlapping applications. Foreign skilled worker applicants, even those with connections to Manitoba, should check their potential scores on both the federal

and provincial systems in order to gage where they have the best chance of selection. The better option may be the federal Express Entry. Make sure you check your scores on both systems to ensure that you have the best chance of selection. Michael Scott BA (Hon), MA,

Solidarity in identity and belonging I first stumbled upon ANAK in 2009. I instantly fell in love. It was summer, and I was having conversations with other Filipino-Canadians in Winnipeg, as they shared with me their thoughts on identity and belonging. At the time, I was a grad student in human rights and social justice, also personally struggling with my own sense of self as a young Filipina, trying to make sense of who I am and why I am in Canada. The school that I was studying at was in The Hague, Netherlands, so I had come back home for a month to research the social exclusion narratives of my community. Through this process, I met two other young, bright and energetic women who shared with me this conflict with identity and who grappled with the question of how we “fit” in – a push/pull

between our “Filipino-ness” and “Canadian-ness.” As Darlyne and Neneth told me their stories, I felt calmer, safer, knowing I wasn’t in this alone. It seemed revolutionary to have a forum where I could navigate my identities, communities and realities with other young people. Even in a sea of Filipinos, I struggled with who to connect to, who to reach out to. Now I knew I could dialogue. And then they told me about ANAK. I was hooked. Both Darlyne and Neneth were part of a group of five who founded ANAK (Aksyon Ng Ating Kabataan) in 2006 in order to preserve and promote Filipino heritage and culture through education. Active members in the community, and friends to boot, they came together because they

had grown tired of trying to do things on their own. They knew they were stronger together, and through mentoring one another and other Filipino youth, they developed a stronger sense of self and helped build community. It was hugely inspiring to see how ANAK’s programs helped facilitate the development of a generation of kids, teens and young adults who were proud of who they were and where they “came from,” confident and successful with coping, navigating and relating to their culture and others in it. The message ANAK championed – to provide educational resources, hold events that enable leadership and community, develop and build youth through mentorship, and advocate for representation of Filipino issues in academia and

popular education alike – was so relatable to me because I felt I had lived my whole life working through the issues that were the impetus behind the formation of ANAK. Having been born in the Philippines, living for a few years in Saudi Arabia where my parents were working, and then eventually immigrating to Manitoba at the age of four, I became a Canadian citizen as a kid. I went to schools where I was the only Filipino in my whole grade, and did my undergrad at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, where I served as Rector, becoming the first woman of colour and youngest person to do so. After finishing my Master’s and moving back home from Europe, I sought out ANAK again, this time eager for the opportunity to be part of something special and to help other young Filipinos find their

way through the programs its dedicated volunteers coordinate. I research, facilitate, organize, present, and write. As ANAK enters its second decade, and we reflect on the organization’s initiatives and the friendships it has helped to form and grow, the ripple effect of its impact throughout the community continues to resonate. As perceptions change and our youth embrace who they are and assert where they belong in Canadian society, they will contribute to the emergence of our world as a safer and more equal place. I am excited – and honoured – to be a part of it. Johsa Manzanilla is the new Director of ANAK. To learn about ANAK’s educational and mentorship programs and resources, or to volunteer with ANAK, visit www.anak.ca or e-mail info@anak.ca.

Confidence can translate into success Confidence is a key ingredient to career success. Dale Carnegie, an American writer, lecturer and developer of famous courses in selfimprovement and interpersonal skills once said, “Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” In other words, if you want to get noticed and become more visible, you must be able to portray the image of self-confidence. Confident people know how to say no A study was conducted by the University of California in San Francisco and the results showed the more difficulty that

a person has in saying no, the more likely that person is to experience stress, burnout, and even depression. There is nothing wrong with saying no. Confident people know it is healthy to do so and they have the self-esteem to clarify their no’s. When they say no, confident people do not use phrases such as, “I don’t think I can” or “I’m not sure.” “No” is conveyed with confidence because they are aware that saying no to a new invitation or commitment respects their existing commitments. Confident people are assertive “Um,” “I’m not sure,” and “I think” are expressions that confident people do not use. Confident people speak assertively because they know

how challenging it is to get people to listen to you if you are not able to deliver your message with conviction. Confident people exercise The Eastern Ontario Research Institute found that people who exercised twice a week for 10 weeks felt more competent, socially, academically and athletically. Confident people never stop learning The best entrepreneurs in the world don’t act like they know everything. They all understand the fact that they have to continuously learn to be successful. Warren Buffet, for instance, once said, “Invest in as much of yourself as you can; you are your own biggest asset so far.” Confident people never stop learning and people who ooze

with confidence draw their sense of satisfaction from their own accomplishments. Confident people continually look for ways to improve because selfgrowth is an important part of a successful career. Confidence is a quality definitely worth developing in one’s career. This attribute can also help project an impression of credibility and integrity that can instil trust in others with regards to one’s abilities to complete the job successfully. “The way to develop selfconfidence is to do the thing you fear and get a record of successful experiences behind you.” – William Jennings Bryan Sources: w w w. f o r b e s . c o m / s i t e s / travisbradberry/2015/04/01/12things-truly-confident-people-

Racking up the miles Where did we leave off? Oh yes, I shared the Burgos’ most recent exploits that brought us down the picturesque coasts of Washington, Oregon and California states. I still heard the sounds of the waves as I fell asleep in our tent. I’m telling you right now: Plan to do it at least once in your life; you won’t regret it. That trip added a few thousand kilometres onto our truck, but we weren’t done! As it turns out, we were going to take another epic road trip. This time from Vancouver Island to Winnipeg! My trusty pal Google said it is 2,500 km – one way. You know what this means? Two oil changes in a one month span! Oh and it also meant that we get to visit our families. I can’t stop gushing about the topography of BC – it’s no wonder that one of the province’s tag line is “British Columbia: Super Natural.” Growing up on the prairies, one does not see mountains very often. In fact, the best ski hill growing up was Spring Hill. But I can’t knock it; we Manitobans (yes, I still consider myself a Manitoban) made do. I would toboggan at Kildonan Park or Kilcona Park. There was cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and of course, miles and miles of fresh powder for the snowmobile to keep us busy in winter. But the one thing I’ll miss the most was skating on one of the many outdoor rinks. You see, children on the Island miss out on that experience; it doesn’t get cold enough to sustain an outdoor rink. Perhaps

that is the reason not many pro hockey athletes hail from the Island. Driving through the mountains is one of my ultimate favourite parts of the drive. It must be the risk of falling rocks or the highway cliff sides that keep me alert and excited. Let’s not forget the little towns of Revelstoke, Golden, Lake Louise and Banff. There is shopping and a ton of sightseeing – if you’re into that sort of thing. Once you get past the Rocky Mountains, you’ll be greeted by the ever-expanding city of Calgary. I’ve got a lot of relatives there, so we always like to make a pit stop. Along with family get-togethers and eating a ton of food, we also got to check out the Flying Squirrel (Calgary’s version of SkyZone Trampoline Park) and the Skyline Luge at Canada Olympic Park. I didn’t partake of the trampoline park; I let the kids use up their energy. But I did check out the luge ride at COP. This is an absolute must if you visit Calgary. Here’s what it is in a nutshell: in the warmer months you can drive a motorless go-kart down a cement track built in the side of the mountain. You start off by taking the chairlift to the top. On the way down, be prepared to hit high speeds on the almost 2 km’s of track. Sounds fun, right? Once past Alberta, I hit cruise control and took a nap through Saskatchewan. This by far is the most mind-numbingly boring part of the drive. In my many years of driving to Calgary from Winnipeg, I’ve always joked

about how much I dislike driving through Saskatchewan. This time was no exception. Still no trees and hay/canola as far as the eye can see. To top it off, Regina has a Carls Jr. restaurant, one of my favourite burger joints. Winnipeg doesn’t have one – so why should Regina!? Makes absolutely no sense. Once in Winnipeg, we shacked up at my mom’s place. God bless her, she braved hosting my kids plus my sister’s kids in her two-bedroom condo. In return for the lodging, I agreed to complete some minor upgrades in her humble abode. Painting, floor trim, silicon around the tubs and sinks and a few other odds and ends. We also spent quality time with both sides of the family, which for some, we haven’t seen in two years! My nieces and nephews have grown up so much, it’s a shame we don’t get to see them more often. Oh wait, how can I forget! The main reason we took the trip east was to be there for my little brother’s wedding! It was a wedding suited perfectly for these two; an intimate setting with close family and friends. They are a private couple, so I won’t share too many details of their special day. All I will say is: It’s about darn time! I was overcome with bittersweet feelings, leaving Winnipeg, where not much has changed, but yet it felt very different. It was hard to once again leave behind family and old friends, I was feeling a bit sad. Or was it because I had to drive through Saskatchewan again? I’ll never tell. Dale is the Director of Communications for a school district in BC and continues to write from afar.

The nightmare customer We have all experienced them in business or career. That one customer who pursues a vendetta to work against the grain by any means necessary. It is not your fault and you are not alone on this one! Although it may appear that way until you interview the countless business owners who all share a common thread on this topic. If you want confirmation ask any entrepreneur who has been in business for a while. With that said, if you have been through this, the mainstay of why it occurred is because you never should have taken them on in the first place. If you choose to accept mission impossible, you will move from service provider to dodging friendly fire. You won’t

like the way you look after it is all said and done; I guarantee it! In this process, most business owners start reactive, instead of being pre-active. Be that as it may, here are a number of technique tweaks to make to ensure you are never caught behind customer lines. It begs the question, have you ever been pressured into negotiating on price points or payment plans? If you have and settled in any way, you should be experiencing an unsettling feeling right about in the pit of your stomach right about now and here’s why. Lowering prices or allowing payment plans, pull in low quality clientele. Quality over quantity for the win. You will magnetize folks who are more concerned

with excuses than actually doing the work they know they ought to be doing. Results are secondary to them and they pull reasons “why not,” out of a hat. Yeah – this will be a roller coaster ride for you and I can’t blame you. It happens to the best of us! Lowering your price or permitting payment options will prevent value added customers from knocking at your door. Moreover, low costs will force out action oriented customers. Lowering costs or extended payment plans, create situations where clients will take the easy road out and will not own up to any responsibility for their lack of results, and they will force blame on you instead at what they should be doing to get what they want with your workmanship. This is the confirmation bias at its worst, they only see what they want to see at this point. Low prices or delayed plans will turn you into a sounding

board for customers who insist on complaining, picking fights, no matter what! Clients who constantly complain, and pick you apart on how you deliver your service, no matter what you do. Conversely, clients who pay upfront are way too busy doing the orders assigned to them to bicker about anything. Low fees and payment schedules will open the door for clients who will constantly push the limits with your value offerings creating massive conflict. If you allow your clients to pay lowered costs and or payment plans, then expect some to have remittance issues. They will not pay and this in the majority of cases is due to lack of funds. They can’t afford it, but they can afford to lend out a bad attitude. They were broke to begin with and again prevention is the best medicine. Drink up! Clients that pay in full and upfront will be your best clients, while the lion’s

share of your uncommitted clients will be “till death do you part.” Low costs and payment plans creates non-committed customers. They are unable to buy into the table instead of putting all the chips on the table. Without a true, vested, paid interest they end up disinterested in what evidently, they care about most – themselves. The next time you come across the nightmare customer, tread carefully, seller beware!

The lonely home – using feng shui to find love One of the greatest joys of living is having someone who belongs to you and whom you belong to. Just knowing you have a partner in life to lean on provides us with fulfillment. Singles will say they have the love of friends and family – but… The “but” is that they don’t have a partner – a wife, a husband, a girlfriend or boyfriend. They say it’s just not the same as when you have someone in your life that you are committed to and who is committed to you. And it’s true. It’s not the same, and it doesn’t matter whether you are gay or straight. Having a loving partner in your life gives you a feeling like no other. So, what can be standing in the way of your partnerships? There are a variety of things that can stop or block you from having the love you want in your life. To be honest, your house could be a lonely home. Energy in your home is a living thing, and if you go home day after day to the same place and are single a long time, your home could be holding you back. Am I suggesting you move? No, but just think about this. I have several long-term single clients and guess what they have in common? They’ve never moved. Ever. As in, they’ve been in the same apartment for 15-35 years. They say they want love in their life, but I think their single life suits them just fine, truthfully, and they don’t want to budge from their little nests. They’ve pulled up their homes around them like a giant security blanket and their home becomes their partner in their life. Let’s think about other ways your home could be keeping you lonely. Holding on to pain This can be old love letters, a photo album from a past trip together or some kind of symbol of your relationship, like the bedroom furniture you bought together. Even if you cut yourself out of a picture with your former boyfriend and put that picture up, you’ll always know that when you took that photo, he was standing there beside you. Take these kinds of mementos and elements out of your living space and your life. Clear the way for someone new and something new to come into your life. This includes ashes of pets or loved ones. You must remove them from your home to invite living – and loving – energy in to your home and life. Cold kitchen A lonely home is often the sign of a kitchen that’s gone cold. You know how it is at every holiday gathering – everyone is in the kitchen. If you’re single, don’t reinforce that singleness by eating out every night or filling

the freezer with microwave dinners for one. Get some real food in there. It’s important that you keep your kitchen fires burning by actually using your stove. Even if you bake muffins to bring into work, that warms up your home – and turns a cold kitchen into one that’s cooking and turns your house into a warm home. It makes sense, too, if you think about how your kitchen can draw love to you. The area associated with love in feng shui is the stomach – and everyone loves to be fed (especially men!). Keep your kitchen heated up to jump-start a cold love life. You can even add a small night-light to keep your home fires burning at night too. The single Whether this is a picture, a painting, or an object, when we see something that’s a single, we see one and it’s “oneness” overtakes our life. Make it a point to make sure your bed is flanked by two tables, that your artwork doesn’t depict a single woman or man, and make sure to have plenty of pairs around the house. Not only does this help your home feel more balanced, but it ads “couples” energy to the house. Pet priorities. A lonely home can often find that the energy is centred on a pet bird, a lanky Labrador retriever, or some other fur-baby. Make sure that your pet doesn’t sleep on the bed with you and sleeps on his or her own bed, otherwise, the pet’s energies take precedence over relationships. It’s tempting to snuggle at night with fluffy, but do it on the sofa if you just have to. Plantasia Plants are wonderful feng

shui, but there can be too much of a good thing. Whether it’s plants or flowers, it’s important to recognize that plants draw energy from earth, and earth is the energy of love and relationships. If your prized African violet collection has overtaken your guest bedroom and you’ve been single a long time, you might know why now. Check the southwest corner of your home to see if there is a plant here that is draining your romance chi, and make absolutely certain there are no plants or flowers in your bedroom, as these will drain the romance right out of your life. And, yes, flowery sheets or bedding counts. Add something nice and neutral and then see what happens! Bedroom points When it comes to feng shui and beds, there are a few hard and fast rules. One is that you should always be able to easily see the door from bed, and the other is that you should have a good, solid headboard. Many people who are having problems with money or relationships often won’t have a good solid headboard. This enables you to think clearly, too. When you’re aching to have someone in your life, your bed represents the symbol of a couple’s union, so it’s important to get it right. If you can’t or don’t want to give up your mattress that’s come from a past relationship, try to put it into sunlight for four hours. This will help you remove old energy – and give it a nice airing out too. Look for other sources of problems, such as headboards with slats, no headboard, sagging mattress, furniture from your past partner. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My fiancé and I moved into my small house and we are overloaded with stuff. I worked with you to create good energy in my home but now with all his

extra stuff, there’s a ton of clutter. Does this affect my feng shui? Answer: Absolutely this affects your feng shui! You’ve gone from single girl feng shui to almost married feng shui. Woo hoo! Congratulations! I am so happy for you. Keeping your excess in the basement is a good idea. But you’re worried about whether living over clutter is bad feng shui? It is if it’s thrown in like at a hoarder’s house – into one giant pile. I doubt you would do that though. Mostly likely it’s in boxes and bins and you can

separate, see, and sort it. As long as it’s orderly, that’s what counts. Then you can work together on what to keep and what to let go of. Just look forward to the future ahead of you. Iron Cop Let’s us meet new Ironman, Jimmy Anis, a full-time sergeant in the Forensic Identification Section of the Winnipeg Police Service who raced in Ironman Wisconsin held on September 11, 2016. He swam 4 km, cycled 180 kmK and ran 42km in 12:53:32 to earn the title “Ironman.” Let’s learn how he manages his life, family, career as a WPS officer, and triathlon trainings. Jim is also the team captain of the Sulong Triathlon Group. How did you get into triathlon? “Triathlons happened almost by accident. Back in May of 2014 I strained my right Achilles tendon after running in the WPS half-marathon, so I was not able to run. I have always wanted to learn how to swim and thought it would be a great way to keep my fitness until I was healthy enough to run again. A running friend of mine who is also a fellow triathlete, Melody Balane, encouraged me to join their swim group led by team Wonder coach, Wanda Mathers. I thought about it and was actually intimidated or plainly just scared to join a group of swimmers. “Just when I thought I had written it off, I received an e-mail from Coach Wanda who convinced me to at least check things out. I told her I would check things out from the sidelines, but if you know Wanda, there is no such thing as just checking things out. So my first day of swimming was on June 8 at Birds Hill Park. The rest is history. I have been swimming with Wonder Athletes from that day forward. I enjoy the activity of swimming, but I consider it to still be my weakest discipline in the sport of triathlon. I am determined to keep working at it and hopefully be more competitive in the swim component in the future.” What made you decide to take on Ironman Wisconsin? [It] “was mostly due to proximity. I wanted to keep my

racing costs as low as possible and Wisconsin gave us the opportunity to drive to the location. Little did I know that I had just entered one of the most technically demanding bike courses on the Ironman circuit.” What were your specific preparations for the race? “I think that’s why I have grown to love this sport because it forces you to become a wellrounded athlete rather than just being one-dimensional. My preparation plan was to try to improve on all three disciplines and, having come from a running background, it helped me to focus on swimming and cycling, which were both new to me. So it was important that I focused on those two, but at the same time maintain my running fitness. Scott Kemp developed a triathlon training plan specifically for me. Wanda Mathers did the swimming program.” How was your performance overall in Ironman Wisconsin? “Wisconsin being my first full Ironman distance event, I have to say that I was pleased with my results. Although I will take away valuable lessons learned because of it. For example, I know that I have to continue to work on improving my swimming. And although I had a great bike split, I knew at the time that I was going a little too hard during my ride. Rather than backing off, I kept up with the pace as I was just having too much fun passing other athletes. Coming off the swim I was just under 2100th place and after the bike I moved up all the way to approximately 1000th place. But I knew in the back of my mind that I would have a tough marathon ahead of me. So race management is crucial for success and I definitely failed to execute good race management, having paid for it with a poor marathon. “At the end of the day my official finish time was 12:53:32

with splits of: 1:38:00 for 2.4 mile swim, 6:31:00 for 112 mile bike, and 4:25:00 for 26.2 mile run.” How did you manage your time between working full-time as WPS officer and training for the Ironman Wisconsin? “That’s probably the toughest part of this sport, especially training for the full Ironman distance events. Basically this is something that needs the full support of your family and friends because on top of working full time, you have to dedicate anywhere from 10 to15 hours of training per week and for some, even more, depending on your race goals. For me just to complete in the event was my goal, so it allowed me to go into the lower end of time commitments for training. But don’t get me wrong; the time commitment to train for a full Ironman requires not only

your dedication as an athlete, but also the support of your family. There were many Saturdays and Sundays that my wife, Amy, and kids barely saw me, as I had scheduled all day training events. “I guess to answer your question, it requires the athlete and families their full dedication and commitment to put in the long training hours. Near the end it was tough because it does eventually put a strain on your professional and personal life.” What’s your most indispensable gear? “For me – and it could be different for other athletes – it is, without a doubt, my triathlon bike. The reason I say that is because that is the longest part of the race where you spend the most time on and to be fully comfortable on your triathlon race bike is priceless.

What’s your favourite workout? “Definitely cycling, because I am relatively new to the sport of cycling and still learning and, hopefully improving. I find that it is a workout that I always look forward to. “I just want to add that another very important component of my success is being a member of the Sulong Triathlon Group. I think that the members of the group are all motivated and to have others with similar goals definitely keeps you motivated. The group is also a great resource for tips and tricks to be successful in our sport. Norman Aceron Garcia is a member of Sulong Triathlon Group.

Arci Muñoz and Jericho Rosales in Magpahanggang Wakas Arci Muñoz and Jericho Rosales will team up for the first time to dramatize the story of how love transcends the test of time in the series Magpahanggang Wakas. Rosales was all praises to his leading lady, Muñoz. He is glad they get along well since they did several love scenes, which are necessary for the story of the show. Kailangan mong maniwala na nagmamahalan talaga kayo for a very good reason,” Jericho confessed. However, Jericho and Arci emphasized that, more than anything, the viewers can look forward to the teleserye’s beautiful story. “It’s a story about love. Siyempre love is the greatest,” said Jericho. Magpahanggang Wakas also stars John Estrada, Gelli de Belen, Rita Avila, Lito Pimentel, Liza Lorena, Danita Paner, Justin Cuyugan, Marco Gumabao, Maika Rivera, and Jomari Angeles under the direction of E.M. ang kaibigan mo, maya-maya, masi-shock ka na lang dahil pinatay na pala. “Napakadali pa namang target ni Alden. He’s everywhere. *** See CRISTY p18

HEART... From page 14 Heart said. Heart recently headlined the top-rating GMA Pinoy TV series Juan Happy Love Story with Dennis Trillo. Doing the series, she said, reignited her passion and enthusiasm for her craft. “After Juan Happy Love Story, sobrang na in love ako ulit sa ginagawa ko, na-excite ako. Sobrang na-enjoy ko yung soap kasi very refreshing siya,” she explained. GMA President Gilberto R. Duavit has nothing but praises for Heart. “Heart is a versatile and professional artist, hindi lamang sa kaniyang mga pagganap kundi maski sa kaniyang pagpinta. Malaki ang nadadala niyang karangalan sa atin,” said Duavit. GMA Vice President Lilybeth G. Rasonable said the network will continue to provide quality projects for Hearts. “We’re very happy with the turnout of Juan Happy Love Story because we’ve seen Heart as the dramatic actress. It’s just exciting for us that we saw a different side of her so it opens a lot of possibilities for the writers. Hopefully she does something different, not necessarily drama. So we’re expecting na mas marami pang project na ganoon para mas maipakita pa natin ang range ni Heart,” Rasonable said.

Bulacan Association of Winnipeg celebrates 20th anniversary By Lucille Nolasco After months of preparations, officers and members of the Bulacan Association of Winnipeg, Inc. (BAOWI) held the group’s 20th anniversary celebration at the Skyview Ballroom of the Marlborough Inn on September 24. After years of seeming inactivity, members and officers are trying to infuse new energy and inspiration into the group to continue its service and commitment to all Bulakenyos in Manitoba. With the theme Isang Lahi, Isang Tinig (One People, One Voice), BAOWI invited Bulacan Vice Governor Daniel Fernando to visit Winnipeg and lead the induction of new officers and town representatives. Joining Fernando on his Canadian trip were 4th District of Bulacan board member Allan Ray Baluyut, Noel Fernando, Engr. Jun Valentin Gatchalian and a few family members. During their almost weeklong stay in Winnipeg, Vice Governor Fernando and delegates were able to meet hundreds of delighted kababayans, as well as politicians from local, provincial and federal governments. They also joined a picnic at Assiniboine Park, a volleyball tournament, and made stops at the Legislature and other favourite spots in Winnipeg. In an interview with CKJS Radio, Fernando shared some of the developments and happenings in the province of Bulacan. Among those he mentioned were the Bulacan Bulk Water project that aims to provide treated bulk water from Angat Dam to the various water districts of the province to help meet the increasing demand among consumers, expand its current service area coverage, and to increase the households served.

With regards to construction and infrastructure, board member Allan Baluyut mentioned a major investment in the province from ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation, which recently purchased some 100 hectares of land in the town of San Jose Del Monte, where construction a Hollywood-style studio has begun. “They plan to shoot all their teleseryes and other dramas there, so they don’t have to look for different locations all the time,” Baluyut said. “Also, they will build hotels and restaurants in the area for the artists and crew.” SM Group of Companies, Ayala Land and Makati Development Corporation also have investments in the area. As for transportation, Vice Governor Fernando boasted the construction of MRT 7 that will travel directly from San Jose Del Monte station all the way to SM North Edsa station. “This is all connected, the economic side and the transportation side. Plus, there is the Bulacan Development Authority, beside the Malolos Convention Center. The 16-hectare lot features the different products and industries of Bulacan. There will also be hotels and call centres constructed,” said Fernando. He also proudly mentioned the new Bulacan Medical Center, formerly known as Bulacan Provincial Hospital, which he said can be compared now to St. Luke’s Hospital or Makati Medical Center. From the façade to the emergency room, to the staff, Fernando said a lot of good changes have happened. Both Fernando and Baluyut encourage all Bulakenyos, especially those who have not been home in a while, to visit the province, which has undergone a lot of changes for the better.

May iisang layunin. Buo. It is an open enterprise.

Money and power. At walang masama dito.

industry. It will benefit both ends. May masama ba dito?

I will sponsor your group and you will patronize my products.

Move on, move on pag may time. It is a free world. Ito ang mga kabute sa ating komunidad, some are edible, some are not. Si Noel Lapuz ay dating OFW sa Middle East (Dubai at Qatar). Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept.

*** History may repeat itself.

Heto ang nakasaad sa Article II, DECLARATION OF PRINCIPLES AND STATE POLICIES. Sec. 7. The State shall pursue an independent foreign policy. In its relation with other states the paramount consideration shall be national sovereignty, territorial integrity, national interest, and the right to self-determination. The executive power shall be vested in the President of the Phillipines.” Bam Aquino sa demolition campaign against PDU30’s leadership.

NABA Tournament 2016 After a season of intense practices, Winnipeg’s NABA basketball and volleyball delegations made their mark in this year’s tournament in Manheim, Pennsylvania on the Labour Day weekend, September 3 to 5, 2016. The Men’s volleyball team took home first place after arduous battles of bump, set and, spike. And although Winnipeg’s Co-Ed team has taken home first place in the past, unfortunate injuries hampered the team and they had to settle for second place in the finals this year. Winnipeg’s Ladies Division also took home a respectable second place. This is only the fifth year that Volleyball has been included in the annual NABA tournament. Jon De Jesus headed Winnipeg’s volleyball teams this year. Winnipeg’s basketball teams didn’t bring home any trophies,

but they came very close. Out of 146 teams throughout Eastern North America, Winnipeg’s Junior team, coached by Jai Mendez placed in fourth, while the Bantam team, coached by Eric Fernandez, placed in fifth, with 19 teams to beat in their respective divisions. Winnipeg’s Ladies and Juvenile teams, both coached by Angel Brana, placed third, just a win short of getting into the finals. All these teams did a tremendous job on the court. Overall, the weekend of volleyball and basketball for Winnipeg’s delegation did a great job, letting everyone know they are there to fight to the end. Next year, the NABA 2017 tournament will be held in Central Jersey, New Jersey. For more information, e-mail nabawinnipeg@gmail.com. From a report by Rizza Valera
