Peace monument in St. Vital Park WINNIPEG – A five-foot pole engraved with the message, “May peace prevail on Earth” in English, French, German, Hindi, Ukrainian, Filipino, Cree and Chinese, was unveiled in St. Vital Park on Tuesday September 8. St. Vital Councillor Brian Mayes and representatives of the Rotary Club of St. Boniface-St. Vital held the dedication ceremony to help launch Peace Days, an annual festival running from September 11 to 24 this year at venues across the city. According to the Peace Days web site, the festival grew out of a desire to celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Peace, designated as September 21 each year. Since the first peace pole was erected in Japan in the 1950s, more than 100,000 similar monuments have been set up in more than 180 countries around the world. The peace poles “serve as visual reminders that peace should never be taken for granted,” Mayes stated in a news release. “Here in Winnipeg, this peace pole is another example of our city’s commitment to promoting peace and human rights,” he added.

More than just hashtags Given the right cause and the right tools for expression, even the casual activist can easily express his sentiments with the few clicks on his smartphone. This was recently evidenced in the outpouring of support for the hashtag “stoplumadkillings,” which has taken social media by storm in recent days after the series of killings of Lumads (indigenous peoples) in Mindanao, most of them attributed to government forces or their paramilitary wings. In his latest dispatch, Human Rights Watch Asia Division researcher Carlos Conde said soldiers “allegedly killed five members of a Lumad family — including children ages 13 and 17 — in Bukidnon on August 18. On September 1, he added, suspected members of a government-backed paramilitary group killed the director of a tribal school in Surigao del Sur, along with two others. “Since May,” Conde asserts, “hundreds of Lumads have taken refuge in an evacuation camp in Davao City after government forces overran their communities as part of an ongoing offensive against the communist New People’s Army insurgency.” But while these killings have become known not just in the country but in many parts of the globe — thanks in no small part to netizens who have become enraged that such murders can still be committed today against

our Lumad communities — government seems to be unaware that they are happening. Indeed, President Benigno Aquino, when asked about the killings, famously said: “There is no campaign to kill anybody in this country.” It may have been a predictable answer, but it was still disappointing in that he did not even bother to acknowledge that soldiers are at least being accused of such atrocities. It becomes positively infuriating when one remembers that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is under the direct supervision of the President as its commander-in-chief. #stoplumadkillings therefore needs to continue if we are to press this administration to listen to the people and look into the allegations that its very own security forces are responsible for the killing of indigenous people. But more than posting hashtags, netizens must begin to engage this government in dialogue and even confrontation — both online and off — on the issue, which is literally a matter of life and death. Government must face up to its responsibility to investigate the matter and not brush it aside simply because the victims are marginalized members of society. Bring development outside the capital The huge traffic problem in Metro Manila, which was worsened by the four-day Iglesia ni Cristo rally on EDSA in mid-

August, is only a symptom of a much larger problem, one that requires a decisive albeit perhaps unpopular solution. For as long as the Philippines has been a country, power has emanated from the nation’s capital, and because that is so, everything else has gravitated towards the centre. Government offices, businesses, commercial establishments, and the general population — all these have come together in the National Capital Region (NCR) simply because it is more convenient. Investors, in particular, have traditionally shunned the regions because getting permits and other requirements takes much longer there since these have to go through the central offices. In cases where their operations are located outside of the capital, their main offices are still located in the Metro. The net result is that wealth — and all the ills that go along with it — are disproportionately concentrated in one area. The Philippines should learn from the neighbouring country of Indonesia, which is currently implementing an ambitious program to create more urban areas outside of the capital Jakarta. Under its current leader President Joko Widodo, huge amounts are being earmarked for infrastructure such as roads and bridges so that development can expand outside of the current central areas. While the road to this development is not smooth,

Indonesia is at least showing that it knows that the future no longer belongs to an over-centralized government. Development must begin in the outskirts so that those living outside the capital share in the benefits of the nation’s wealth. It also relieves the central areas of overcrowding. For an archipelagic country, that is indeed the only way to go. Which is why it boggles the mind why the Philippines still insists on keeping the power — and the money — in the centre. Current government policy is still over-centralized, with decisions having to be made in the national capital even if those affected live hundreds of kilometers away. Worse, the taxes that the regions collect are first utilized in Metro Manila — as evidenced by the roads, bridges, skyways, and railway transit systems that litter the capital — before a small pittance is allowed to return. Many of those in Metro Manila themselves are unwilling to let development spread to other areas, but what they do not realize is that their problem with traffic — arguably the most disruptive for their lives as citizens — is a direct result of this over-centralization. Bring development to the regions and the rest — including traffic — will flow out. Jon Joaquin is the Associate Editor of EDGE Davao, the newest daily newspaper in Mindanao. Hit the ground running It’s safe to say that I took my own advice about being active and involved in the community during my summer break. I travelled, I did some networking, I volunteered, and I was out and about at community celebrations and events. This made my summer fly by faster than it ever has before. I’m glad to be back for my second year of this column, as well as my fourth year teaching. After having taught three full years in this classroom, I have gained a sense of comfort and confidence in my ability to set up for my next batch of students. What used to take me two weeks of organizing and planning, I am

now able to do within one week. The first week of school is crucial both at school and at home. On my end, I am building relationships in the classroom community, ensuring that this new group of kids, all anxious for their final year at the school, become aware that they are in a safe learning environment. I set the tone that the year will not be an easy one, but we will power through the next ten months by being true learners – learners who take initiative, ask questions, and set goals for ourselves. Parent tip: Encourage! The students who I notice have the most academic and

Back-to-school survival guide personal growth in the school year are the students whose parents are involved in their learning. These parents call or visit me at school to follow up, they ask me what advice I have for them to help encourage their child to get involved and interested in his or her studies. They take time to have important conversations with their children, and are involved in their children’s goal setting. We live in a culture where we are constantly distracted by our surroundings. Take time to be

unplugged – and to tune into what matters most. Check up on your children this first month of school by asking open-ended questions: “How do you like your teacher?” “What are you nervous about for this year?” “What are you excited about?” These three questions alone will spark a meaningful conversation between you and your scholars. Best of luck, and enjoy the first few weeks of school! Judianne Jayme is an educator teaching sixth grade in the Winnipeg School Division.

Hygiene for boys Dear Ate Anna, My son is five years old and has not been circumcised. I am worried about his hygiene and wanted to know if I can pull back the foreskin of his penis to clean and prevent an infection. In my culture boys are circumcised to avoid health problems. My husband and I are wondering if this is a common practice in Canada. Carmelita Dear Carmelita, Thank you for trusting Ate Anna with your question. Your concern is a valid one as you are looking out for the health of your family. Many parents worry about hygiene issues, especially with boys. It is important to keep your son’s penis clean whether he has been circumcised or not. Baby boys are born with a loose flap of skin that covers and

protects the rounded top or glans of the penis. This is called the foreskin. One important thing to remember is that the foreskin of a newborn boy is attached to the penis by a membrane and cannot be retracted or pulled back over the head of the penis. This membrane dissolves naturally over a period of years. It is important to note that this process should not be hurried. Pushing the foreskin back too early can damage it and may cause scar tissue. Until the foreskin is retractable, the recommendation is to wash the outside tip of the penis the same as any other body part with gentle soap and warm water. Be sure to rinse the soap off well! It could take up to five years or more before a boy’s foreskin can be retracted. It is likely that your son will be the one to discover that his foreskin is ready to be pulled back. When the foreskin can easily be retracted, it can be

cleaned daily. Clean under the foreskin by gently pushing it as far as possible toward the body. Carefully wash the entire area with warm water, and then replace the foreskin back over the head of the penis. A five-year-old boy can be taught to clean under his foreskin gently as a normal part of his hygiene routine. When a boy reaches puberty, he needs to clean under his foreskin with gentle soap and warm water every day. The increased hormones during puberty cause the body to sweat more causing a more noticeable body odour, especially under the arms and the genital area. If your son’s foreskin does not retract by the time he reaches puberty, make an appointment for him to see his doctor. You also mention that in your

PAGE 5 culture every boy is circumcised. In Canada circumcision is a personal decision done for religious or cultural reasons. Although it was almost a routine procedure in the 1950s, it has become less common. The Canadian Pediatric Association does not recommend routine circumcision. There are potential risks and potential benefits to circumcision. If you decide that you would like to have your son circumcised, talk to your doctor about a referral to a specialist who performs the procedure. That doctor can talk to you about what is involved and whether or not circumcision would be recommended for your son. You can also discuss the cost of circumcision, as it is not covered by the medical system. Don’t hesitate to ask about any concerns or questions you have

regarding the procedure and its long-term effects. Carmelita, I hope you find this information helpful but Ate Anna wants to remind you that it does not replace medical advice. For more information you can check the following website: www. kidshealth.org.nz/circumcision. As well, talk to your doctor to help you make an informed decision. Immigration matters to all my readers and to me. I have spent the good part of thirty years working in the field and, as a result, I feel very passionate about the subject. However, the political parties in Canada do not necessarily share my passion and your interest. In fairness to them, all immigration is only one issue facing the country in the midst of a federal election. The following is an overview of each party’s proposed immigration plans provided by Canada Immigration News. This national publication claims to base their findings on official party websites and/or by contacting the competing parties directly. Conservative Party of Canada Some of the immigration proposals put forward by the Conservatives in their election platform include: work collaboratively with provincial and municipal partners to provide settlement supports to newcomers; provision of language training to aid in the adaptation process; streamline funding processes; and examine the feasibility of funding settlement services to allow for the migration of newcomers from one region to another. In terms of temporary foreign workers – match recruitment of temporary foreign workers to address serious skills shortage

in specific sectors; examine ways to make transition from temporary foreign worker to permanent status; and ensure that the protection inside Canada is given to temporary foreign workers is the same as that given to Canadian workers. In terms of the timely processing of applications and permits – work to ensure that the CIC is properly staffed, trained and resourced; and reorganize application process so that applicants are given accurate information about processing and expectations; extend automatic Canadian citizenship to children adopted abroad; provide option of bonds to allow higher acceptance rates for family and other special visits; reduce the need for Temporary Resident Permits (TRPs); and refrain use of the term “resident” or “residence” in temporary, student or visitor visas to increase chance for those temporarily visiting Canada. The Conservatives also have made promises regarding the recognition of foreign credentials to ensure that equivalency exams are fair; work with Canadian professional and trade associations to ensure a smoother transition for foreign qualified workers into the Canadian workplace; and to prequalify internationally trained individuals

Party positions on immigration in federal election for certain occupations in collaboration with the recognized Canadian professional licensing authorities. In terms of refugees – the Conservatives promote streamlining the process of validating refugee claims; ensure timely removal of claimants who do not qualify as genuine refugees by the Immigration and Refugee Board. New Democratic Party (NDP) The New Democratic Party (“Nouveau Parti democratique, NPD”) proposed a number of changes regarding the rights of immigrants and refugees: reunification of families is the main priority while respecting the diversity of family models (extended family) under Charter of Rights and Freedoms; annual immigration level of one per cent of the population to meet labour market needs and family reunification; elimination of application and landing fees; provision of English and French language instruction to newcomers; work with provinces and territories to recognized foreign diploma and professional credentials; reform Immigration Canada procedures to eliminate arbitrariness in processing of requests and appeals; end exploitation of temporary foreign workers; simplify the issuing of visitor visas for persons coming to visit family members in Canada; make international adoption simpler and quicker; allow Canadians a one-time chance to sponsor a relative who is not a member of the family class; ensure that tough laws against corrupt immigrant consultants are enforced; and fast track family class sponsorship from disaster areas. In terms of temporary foreign workers – the NDP want to prioritize nation building and permanent immigration over temporary worker programs; consider a moratorium on deportations of non-status workers and families while individual cases are adjudicated through a transparent and impartial appeal process; implement a fair and transparent model for recognition of international credentials; review mobility

restrictions placed on housing for temporary foreign workers; make it easier for temporary foreign workers to bring in immediate family members; ensure that all temporary foreign workers, even those working under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) have an ability to apply for permanent residence; create an inspection mechanism to ensure that OFWs are not being exploited and subjected to poor working conditions; and work with foreign embassies to ensure that temporary foreign workers coming to Canada are informed of their rights. Finally the NDP would introduce a number of changes to enhance the treatment of newcomers such as a national strategy to eliminate poverty in Canada; institute a National Children’s Advocate to promote and protect the rights of all children; stop discrimination against LGBT persons in the immigration process; and stop discrimination against persons with disabilities and employ multiculturalism as a tool of integration consistent with immigration policies. Liberal Party of Canada The Liberal Party has proposed the following measures: repeal Bill C-24 also known as the Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act to ensure that all Canadians are treated equally. In terms of temporary foreign workers – the Liberals Party intends to increase accountability in the Temporary Foreign Worker Program; establish a mandatory complaint tracking system; ensure compulsory and regular workplace audits; require mandatory disclosure of investigations into abuses of the program; mandatory disclosure of federal employer compliance reviews; and establish monthly disclosures on number of temporary foreign workers in Canada, by region, National Occupation Classification code and employer. In terms of refugees – provide more help in Iraq and Syria through well-funded and wellplanned humanitarian aid; expand the target number of Syrian refugees to 25,000; and expand

refugee targets and give victims of war the opportunity to start new lives in Canada. The overall intention of the Liberal Party of Canada is to increase funding and a more welcoming attitude by government to improve Canada’s record in family reunification, refugees and citizenship. Green Party The Green Party has proposed the following measures: eliminate the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and increase immigration where labour shortages are established; define “environmental refugee;” eliminate valuation of foreign credentials unless credentials are recognized in Canada; press professional licensing bodies to eliminate unnecessary barriers hindering the recognition of foreign credentials; increase funding for language training to newcomers; establish programs to deal with the 200,000 “TNTs” currently estimated to be living in Canada; support multicultural organizations; work to toughen laws governing immigration consultants; increase penalties for those convicted of human smuggling; amend the AntiTerrorism and Public Safety Act to ensure that persons are charged within a reasonable amount of time; repeal recent changes that are speeding up deportation; address the issue of “Lost Canadians” who are being denied citizenship; recognize those who have refused or left military service not sanctioned by the UN; repeal legislation imposing jail time retroactively and targeting persons who arrived by ship; and reverse Harper government’s policies to place barriers on family reunification. In terms of the positions outlined above I have resisted any temptation to editorialize and relied upon the findings of the source article. I am surprised by the lack of material from the Liberal Party of Canada relative to the other parties but once again depend upon Canada Immigration News’ statements that they have been objective throughout. The major difference for the reader is that the Conservatives have been in office for over 10 ten years so we can judge their proposals against their track records while the other parties have been in opposition. Understanding soils and settlement Soil is a naturally occurring mixture of mineral and organic matters with a specific form, configuration, and composition. Soil is composed mainly of minerals that are formed from large material (stones, gravel, and other rock debris), which is broken into small pieces (sand, silt, or clay) by weathering. Typical soil composition is 45 per cent minerals, 25 per cent water, 25 per cent air, and 5 per cent organic matter or humus (both living and dead organisms). The concern with soil in regard to structure is its capacity to support the building’s weight while remaining stable. Maintaining long-term stability demands suitable soil compaction and consolidation before permanent loads (like foundation footings, walls, concrete floor, driveway slab, etc.) are placed over it. The excavation process agitates soil and loosens it, resulting in larger spaces between soil particles. Thus, engineering specifications often instruct that foundations be constructed on undisturbed soil. The backfill must be prepared as hard and solid as possible prior to constructing a permanent load over it. This is accomplished by mechanical compaction, wherein soil is placed in layers or lifts and compacted by impact and/ or vibration. The compaction procedure and consolidation both force air from the spaces between soil particles, which increases the soil density and capacity to bear a load. Compaction is affected by a number of factors such as soil type (clay, sand, silt, level of organic matter, etc.), soil characteristics (uniformity, gradient, plasticity, etc.), soil thickness, method of compaction, and moisture content at the time of compaction. Since soil is more permeable to air than to water, compacting may take out a large portion of air but a considerable amount of water may be left. Soil goes through both primary and secondary consolidation. Primary consolidation is shortterm and occurs during the mechanical compacting process. On the other hand, secondary consolidation is long-term and happens after the construction phase. Throughout secondary consolidation, the load put on soil slowly expels water out of the void spaces, which will cause soil particles to move closer together and settle. The source of the weight would be both the structure and the overlying soil. The amount of secondary consolidation is directly proportional to the depth of the affected area. An excavation with backfill five metres deep would have greater secondary consolidation than an excavation with backfill three metres deep. When a house is built partially on undisturbed soil and partially

on compacted fill, there will be two areas that will consolidate at different rates. This is “differential settlement.” Effects of settlement can be seen in any part of house bearing upon the settled soil. In well-compacted soil, settlement will be so minor that evidence will be unnoticeable. However, excessive differential settlement will generate stresses that are abated by cracking. Which materials crack depends on the material properties and the rate of soil settlement. Cracks due to soil settlement are generally seen in interior and exterior wall coverings such as drywall and plaster, and in masonry foundation walls. Most people think concrete is brittle, but it can bend if a load is applied slowly over a long period of time. Cracks will form if pressure is applied before the concrete completely cures. Fine-grained soils have more interior surface area and can hold more air and water than coursegrained soils. To illustrate, drywall is made of courser particles than cement. A kilogram of drywall dust contains about 16,500 square metres of interior surface area, whereas a kilogram of cement dust contains about 165,000 square metres of interior surface area. Greater interior surface area means fine-grained soils can contain more water and have greater surface tension than course-grained soils. To force water out of the void spaces, surface tension must be overcome, which is the tendency of water to adhere to a surface. Surface tension is demonstrated in

a glass with water. The water level is a little higher around the edges where water comes into contact with the container surface. Fine-grained soils also have low permeability, which means water moves through it gradually. This circumstance raise the quantity of time and pressure required for soil consolidation. Soils will keep on settling until it reaches equilibrium with the stresses due from the weight of soil and structure above. The rate of soil settlement depends on the soil composition, levels of moisture saturation, the amount and characteristic of the loads and state of soil’s consolidation. Excessive addition of moisture to the soil can cause a condition in which water is absorbed into the void spaces, thereby decreasing soil density and its capability to carry a load. Feng shui space cleansing: Steps to ridding your home of negative energy Sometimes a house or office can feel uncomfortable, and there’s no real reason you can put your finger on to explain your uneasy feeling. Other times, it’s easy: someone has been there that was negative, ill or died. Homes and spaces often take on the energy of the previous occupants as well. There may be instances when you moved into a space and just felt like someone else was there, or the space just didn’t feel right – it’s because of lingering negative energy. If this sounds familiar, just remember you are not alone. Many people feel uncomfortable in spaces and can’t explain why. The “why” is not important, however; what is important is that you find a way to make your space feel more comfortable so you can feel more at ease. A first step would be to perform a space cleansing. Unlike “space clearing,” space cleansing doesn’t rely on getting rid of clutter. However, if you have a bunch of old items and junk from previous residents or others, it is possible that some of the energy is coming from these old items. If that’s the case, then you should definitely take some of these things to the trash. What’s more, if you have had a spate of bad luck and find that life has just been a constant struggle, it’s possible that you have some negative energies hanging around that are making your house yin – or negative in energy. This is another good instance when it might be a good idea to do a space cleansing.

Space cleansing will help you feel more comfortable in your home or office, and let you move on in your space comfortably and in a positive state of mind. Why bother with a space cleansing? Because negative energy gathers and compounds to create more negative energy. That’s why it’s important to handle negative energy by ridding your home of negative energy when you feel like your space isn’t quite right. To ignore it is to allow more negative energy to build, and this can impact your health, your career and your finances, and even cause depression. Regardless of why you feel the way you do, if your space doesn’t feel quite right, here are some space cleansing tips to help you clear out the negative energy in your house and invite good energy back inside! STEP 1. Clear stale energies from the house If you have recently moved, you might be feeling some residual energy from past residents. If that’s the case, then consider using this technique: open everything that is closed. In short, you should open all doors, all windows, all cabinets, all boxes; anything that is closed should be open. Then, walking from the front door in a clockwise pattern, starting at the front door. Circle each room and go into the next while ringing a bell. Be sure to ring the bell in the corners of rooms and in closets where negative energy can remain trapped. Complete the clearing by finishing at the front door and ringing the bell as you circle the front door three times to activate and clear negative energies. You may want to proceed

through the other five steps before closing everything up again. STEP 2. Use salt to cleanse an area Another tip is to use salt to remove negative energies. You can wipe the walls with salt or sprinkle salt into the corners of the room. Be sure to sweep up the salt and throw it into the trash outside of your house. STEP 3. Feed your ghosts rice
If you feel extreme negative energy, you can also try sprinkling rice around the perimeter of your home, beginning at the front door and walking in a clockwise fashion until you come to the door again. The rice will draw the energy outside and away from the interior of your home. This is a terrific method of ridding your home of negative energy and space cleansing. STEP 4. Scent the air to clear out negative energies
Use smoke from incense or from herbs, such as lavender for transcending problems, eucalyptus for healing, or mint for prosperity. The wonderful and therapeutic scents of incense or herbal essential oils are all excellent ways to introduce beneficial energy and remove negative energies from a single room or your entire home. STEP 5. Use light and sound Light and sound are two very effective “yang” treatments that help to dispel and remove negative energies. Tinkling wind chimes and bright crystal rainbows or lit chandeliers are both excellent ways to introduce beneficial – and cleansing – energy to your space. If you have done all five steps, it’s time to close up all the doors, windows, cabinets, and drawers,

and then proceed to Step 6. STEP 6. Take a salt bath yourself
In the process of space cleansing your home, it might be a good idea to cleanse yourself as well. It is possible that you are bringing negative energy home from work or from the outside world. Soak in a tub with sea salt or make your own sea salt scrub and wash your body in the shower with salt. Salt will purify you and remove negative energies from your body. This is especially helpful if you work in a hostile or gossipy environment, and will help you clear negative energy from your body. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: A single friend of mine doesn’t believe in feng shui but has miserable luck in her life. Her birthday is coming up. Is there something I can give her for her birthday to help her attract better luck in her life? Answer: Aren’t you a great friend! She’s lucky to have you – that’s for sure. Sometimes we want good fortune for others more than we do for ourselves. Some people are closed off and not open and receptive

to good fortune. I’ve learned that when we constantly expect the worst in life, the universe gives it to us. Never ask, “What else can happen,” because something else certainly will!
Back to your question. I’d buy something for your friend that you like because, as my mother used to tell me, if you like it, your friend will probably like it too. Buy her something pretty with auspicious symbols. I especially like butterflies because they represent a rebirth and they’re also a wonderful symbol of love – and since you say she’s single, it might just be the symbol she needs to attract a special someone. It might also help your friend “turn over a new leaf” I hope so. She’s already got a good start with you as her friend. Me vs. We mentality Before I ever became an entrepreneur, I was involved in the non-profit sector. Actively engaged inside a non-profit before getting into business creates a set of actions that serves as a benefit to entrepreneurs. The reason why businesses, organizations, nonprofits, and foundations fail more than they succeed is because of an inability to care for the wants and needs of others. To succeed in business, a mission driven attitude of gratitude goes a long way. In other words, this failure is a result of importance and meaning being placed solely on the self and very little value on the what matters most; that being, your customers, donors and those who are supporting or working with you. Correspondingly, this is why

most non-profits fail to meet their fundraising expectations and why most businesses end up as “nonprofits,” because they’re unable to generate income on demand. There’s a “Me-Mentality,” in charge of operations, rather than a “We-Mentality!” A “We-Mentality” is needed to make a difference as a not-for-profit and make margins in commerce. This would be a great opportunity to bring to light the Hawthorne Effect. This effect was made evident after a study was commissioned by Hawthorne Works, in order to see if their workers would become more productive in higher or lower levels of light. The workers’ productivity seemed to improve when changes were made, and slumped when

the study ended. It was suggested that the productivity gain occurred due to the motivational effect on workers and interest being shown in them. When those in charge do not show appreciation for the hands and feet that help the larger body, it makes it challenging to stand behind a business without a mission. Caring is a necessary Cost Of Doing Business (CODB). Have you factored this “cost,” into your business, organization, foundation or non-profit? If not, you’re making a costly mistake! A mentor shared an experience he had once involving a chance meeting he had with the legendary Steve Jobs of Apple. He had the opportunity to ask him what his key to success was in business. Steve responded with a very simple yet profound statement, “You just have to care!” There’s a certain amount of emotional intelligence that is required to build a successful

business, enterprise, non-profit or foundation from the ground up. Emotions can be seen as the ability to handle motion and energy. The itineraries of your teammates, partners, workforce, clientele or donors and their motivational requirements. Effective leadership depends on the one’s skilfulness to handle their own motion and energy levels in their non-profit or business. Poor leadership negatively affects enterprises in that there will be difficult team environments, demotivated staff, and ultimately a top down crash and burn of the organization. One thing I learned in the nonprofit sector was that creating value by exhibiting a positive unselfish regard for others first and your needs afterwards is an attractive canvas to draw out a win-win situation. Starting an altruistic movement instils an irrational passion to help others and solve the world’s greatest problems. The

difference between a business and a non-profit is a matter of perspective. Customers versus donors. This is what business owners around the world do not fully realize when farming on the goods and services landscape. It’s no wonder that the struggle is real. Business, Success & Money message This is the era of the consumer. The consumer is always right, even when they’re wrong. It’s a buyer marketplace. Truly thinking of your self less exemplifies real service! You must carry out your business as if it was a non-profit and become more service-hearted. You can become more valuable in business and life by first valuing others! The IEEQ connection a. to fill the gap in my experience and academics. My previous job in the Philippines was project management for building cellular sites. I did not have specialization in design and operation. I did not have my PMP certification either. These two issues became a disadvantage for me when looking for jobs, both entry level and management positions. b. to expand my options. I took electrical, power systems and telecommunications courses so I would have a better chance applying with the two largest employers in Manitoba that hire electrical engineering graduates, MTS and Manitoba Hydro.

As of this writing, fall term at the University of Manitoba (UM) has started. And among the newbies on campus are the 13th cohort of the InternationallyEducated Engineers Qualification (IEEQ) program. They share their expectations and thoughts as start their IEEQ journey. Maria Karla Milla Pascual Electrical Engineering One of my goals since I arrived here in Canada is to pursue my engineering profession, which is a tough row to hoe. The ubiquitous advice from Filipino Engineers of the APEGM-FMC was a big factor in my decision to choose the IEEQ program. I find this program interesting and challenging since I will have a chance to work with reputable professors at the University of Manitoba. Now that I have been accepted to the IEEQ Program, I expect that I will gain more knowledge and handson classroom experience, and collaborate with new people in a culturally diverse community. The fact that I will be exposed to the Canadian way of studying, I know I will be fully equipped before stepping up to the next level, which is finding a career in electrical engineering. Erwin Sy Mechanical Engineering Choosing the unknown is an extremely daunting task, and choosing to do the IEEQ program is one of them. Yet, going into the program and successfully completing it will allow us to become Engineers-in-Training (EIT) in a more time-efficient manner. Another reason why I chose to go into the program is because of its co-op component, where participants are required to complete a program that enables us to acquire our first Canadian engineering experience. The program allows us to better network ourselves. I was told that in the program we would meet many individuals whom we can be real friends with. This might not be much during the time we are studying and doing the program, but it might come in handy in the future. Completing the program will give us the hope that when we finish the program, all our hard work will not be in vain. We will have better chances landing in jobs that we are passionate about, and where we can earn enough to build our Canadian dream. Of course, choosing the program is not a walk in the park. The program is known to be challenging and requires an extreme effort to complete. Should one derail from the tasks ahead, being booted out of the program is a reality. With no guarantee that one will finish the program, it is an enormous risk that is not for the faint of heart. To appease one’s curiosity

Maria Karla Milla Pascual about life after the IEEQ program, I asked three alumni from different cohorts to tell us their stories and how the program helped them jumpstart their engineering career in Canada. Joy Oserio, EIT (IEEQ Batch 8) • Pre-IEEQ occupation: various jobs, mostly production assembly • Post-IEEQ & current employment: electrical engineer at Gerdau, a leading producer of long steel in North and South America. Why IEEQ? I know the program will help me to integrate into the Canadian engineering industry. My experience at my co-op actually was a big factor in being accepted for my current job. How long did it take you to complete the program? Since I was working part time, I could only take two courses per term. It took me five terms from 2010-2013. Where did IEEQ help you the most? The IEEQ program showed us Canadian culture and how to be registered as an engineering professional in Manitoba. Would you recommend the IEEQ program? Why? Definitely! The IEEQ helped me immensely in getting a job in my profession. Ray Anthony Sator, EIT (IEEQ Batch 9) • Pre-IEEQ occupation: production assistant • Post-IEEQ and current employment: network services associate at MTS, the primary telecommunications carrier in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Why IEEQ? I chose IEEQ option for these five reasons:

Erwin Sy c. to learn the engineering professional practices and ethics in Canada. This course is a requirement in the IEEQ program. d. to improve my English and expand my network in the engineering industry. e. to even the playing field. Most companies are absorbing students when they graduate who did their co-op with them. Co-op is a component of the IEEQ What were your expectations of the program? I was expecting that the program would have a list of companies related to my field in Manitoba. Did it meet your expectations? Why and How? Yes and no. The IEEQ promotes the value of commitment and taking charge of your plan, especially when applying for your co-op. The list of companies in my field was minimal. They provide support in resume writing and interview preparation, which I did not expect before I was accepted to the program. Where did IEEQ help you the most? Resume writing, interview preparation, networking and the staff, by just being there when you need someone to talk to about your status, aspirations and

Ray Anthony Sator difficulties. The program also provides access to mentors. What will you take from your participation with IEEQ? I have built relationships not only with my batch mates in the IEEQ but also with those who were taking equivalent courses and with regular students as well. Would you recommend IEEQ? Why? I recommend IEEQ program to those who have a gap in their experience and academics. The program will somehow fill that gap and will provide opportunities for networking, additional learning, and it will build relationships among students and faculty. Ray also wants to impart that, “One must begin with the end in mind. It is very important that one must have a very clear objective when choosing the options provided by APEGM. He or she must study the options and weigh the pros and cons according to his or her current situation (schedule, financial and family support, etc.)” Franz Kasala, EIT (IEEQ Batch 10) • Pre-IEEQ occupation: materials management assistant at Rana Respiratory Care Group. • Post-IEEQ and current employment: wireless engineer at Manitoba Hydro, the electric power and natural gas utility in the province of Manitoba Why IEEQ? Due to its benefits of a structured academic environment, Canadian coop work experience, cultural orientation, language support, and its common environment with other internationally educated engineers. How long did it take you to complete the program? 16 months (three regular school terms and one summer coop work term) Where did IEEQ help you the most? The IEEQ program’s “ENG 4020: Professional Engineering Practice in Manitoba” is by far the most valuable course I have taken in my engineering education. This course is only offered to students enrolled in the IEEQ program and comes with a wealth of information invaluable to every foreign trained engineer. This course introduced me to the practice of professional engineering in Manitoba, professional culture, organization and regulation, engineering ethics and law. The IEEQ program also offered an extensive amount

Franz Casala of professional networking opportunities, which proved to be instrumental in uncovering the hidden job markets, as the vast majority of jobs are found through networking, word of mouth and personal recommendations. What do you consider as your most memorable experience with IEEQ? While in the program, I was selected as one of the top 40 students across Canada to participate in the 2013 and 2014 Canadian Nuclear Association Conference and Trade Show in Ottawa, Canada. Would you recommend IEEQ? Why? Yes. The intent of the IEEQ program is for its participants to demonstrate their competency for academic qualification with the APEGM. The program takes a multi-dimensional approach to the professional integration of internationally educated engineers into the Canadian engineering profession. Ethel Clemente- Fernandez is a professional engineer registered in the province of Manitoba. Kung dati’y paulit-ulit na ibino-broadcast ng Eat…Bulaga kung nasaan ang tropa ng All For Juan, Juan For All, ngayon ay baligtad na ang kalakaran, hanggang maitatago nila kung nasaan ang grupo ay ginagawa ng mga hosts. Sa segment din kasing iyon ipinapasok ang kalyeserye na talaga namang kinalalagnatan na ng buong bayan dahil sa sikat na loveteam nina Alden Richards at Maine Mendoza a.k.a. Yaya Dub.

*** Masayang-masaya ngayon See CRISTY p19

Rally for refugees of Syrian civil war WINNIPEG – The Kurdish Association of Manitoba held a rally in front of the Manitoba Legislature on Wednesday, September 9 to call upon the Canadian government to accept more Syrian refugees from Syria, Iraq, the Middle East, and especially Kurdistan. They also called on the government to provide humanitarian supplies for the refugees trapped in the war zone. Kurdish Association President, Farhad Sultanpour and Second Vice President, Nour Ali, met with Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger and Labour and Immigration Minister Erna Braun for 20 minutes before the rally. According to Sultanpour, they asked the Manitoba government to accept more refugees displaced by ISIS and the Syrian regime in the 1.8 million refugee camps in south Kurdistan, Iraq. He also said Kurdish refugees and minorities, including Yazidi Kurds, should be given a fare share of any refugee quota. But Sultanpour also urged caution in accepting refugees, saying that Immigration Canada should review each selected refugee case with the Kurdistan intelligent Service, Asayesh, to prevent terrorists entering Canada. He emphasized that the

CRISTY...

Peshmarga and Kurdish fighters are the strongest Western allies and are the most effective and credible military force deterring ISIS from spreading terror throughout the Middle East and eventually, to the international community. “Manitobans, like all Canadians, are deeply distressed by the tragedy of forced migration currently unfolding in the Middle East,” Premier Selinger said at the legislative building on September 4. “Syria’s civil war is widely regarded as one of the worst humanitarian disasters of modern times,” he said. “It would be irresponsible to turn our backs on the suffering of our fellow human beings. As a collective global community, we must do all that we can to try and facilitate a lasting peace.” Minister Erna Braun said during the rally that Manitoba resettles more refugees, as a proportion of our population, than any jurisdiction in Canada. “Our government has asked the Government of Canada to join us in a commitment to accept an additional 500 refugee families from Syria to be settled in Manitoba,” said Braun. “Our government has also committed to increase our contribution to lo-

cal settlement services organizations by providing an additional $40,000 to help newcomers and their families,” she added. Glenda Lagadi, a local Filipino tax accountant married to Farhad Sultanpour, said, “Amazing how a picture of a lifeless Kurdish-Syrian boy [Alan Kurdi] on the Turkish shore touched the whole world… I am

not a Kurd but I feel the anguish of the Kurds crying for help for their children’s sake… Don’t let Rehanna, Ghalib and Alan’s deaths be in vain. Have mercy on the Kurds. Let’s help them gain their autonomy and someday, maybe, they can enjoy a state of their own and put Kurdistan back on the map.” Among the guest speakers

at the rally were: MP for Winnipeg North, Kevin Lamoureux; Manitoba Minister of Multiculturalism and Literacy, Flor Marcelino; human rights lawyer, David Matas; Jewish Post and News publisher Bernie Bellan; Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM) President, Lou Fernandez; and PCCM Secretary, Rey Sangalang.

L-R: Kurdish Association President, Farhad Sultanpour, Lawyer David Matas, MP Winnipeg North Kevin Lamoureux, Premier Greg Selinger with flag bearers Dolsgad Azeez & Omar Rahimi.

*** History speaks for itself.

Barack Obama ng full state welcome.

Grace Poe at Chiz Escudero.

PAGE 21 1. Mahigit 12 million votes from more than 18,000 voting precincts ang hindi nabilang bukod sa overseas votes noong 2013 elections. 2.
