Another chance to sponsor parents and grandparents The Government of Canada announced on September 1 that it would accept another round of applications for sponsoring parents and grandparents this year. Under the new sponsorship process, people who want to sponsor their parents and grandparents to come to Canada must complete an online form. Earlier this year, 10,000 individuals were randomly selected from the forms received and invited to submit an application. Not everyone who was selected submitted a complete application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) by the August 4 deadline, so now other potential sponsors will have a chance to submit an application. Paul walked into our studio/ office in Davao City one morning looking distraught. He was having a panic attack, he said, because of a relatively strong earthquake that rocked Davao City a few hours earlier. My wife Dadai gave him a paper bag to breathe into, and while he was trying to compose himself he explained that earthquakes terrified him because of what he went through during the temblor that caused a tsunami in the Indian Ocean in 2004. Paul is a 19-year-old Indian medical student at the Davao Medical School Foundation (DMSF). He was born and raised in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a paradise-like area right smack in the Indian Ocean. When the December 26, 2004 earthquake struck — the third strongest on record with a magnitude of 9.1 to 9.3 — he was in an elevated area which was above the reach of the gigantic waves that swept over the island. But from his vantage point he could only watch helplessly as the waters washed over houses, buildings, and other structures — with some of his relatives and neighbours taken away into the sea, never to be seen again. These days Paul has mostly gotten over the trauma. He is easygoing, fun loving, and tries his best to be friends with Filipinos. He has even learned to sing a few Visayan songs, including the popular Hasula. But the scars of living through a nightmare and losing several loved ones can still

At the ripening age of 33, I have spent more than a third of my life in university in a variety of roles: student, writing tutor, T.A., and now instructor. If I had to impart anything to those who are starting a new year of high school, college, or university, it is that I didn’t really start being productive until I worked less. That is, until I learned to protect and manage my work time, and to devote more space in my life to things that mattered. Managing your time happens at a number of levels. During my undergraduate degree, I would spend marathon sessions working, either on campus, at home, or both. For those who have done this, you will know that you are not working that entire time. We must stop to eat, use the washroom, and perhaps chat with people we run into – all of which is, of course,

cause him sleepless nights – and restless days. *** Indians have been in Davao City for many years now, becoming productive members of the community in their various professions and the businesses they have engaged in. Of late there has been a new wave of arrivals, young Indians who study medicine at the DMSF. As the story goes, Indians began to come to Davao City to study after a few pioneers tried it some years back and ended up topping the board exams in India. It also happens to be cheaper here, and being accepted is much easier than in the highly competitive colleges and universities in India. Now there are literally thousands of them, and they have become a common sight in many parts of the city. My family has been friends with four of them since early this year. I found them one day outside our office, apparently looking for something but with no one bothering to help them. I called them in and asked what they were looking for, and they said they needed a place to move to since they were dissatisfied with the dormitory they were staying in. As it turned out there were a few vacancies in our apartment building so I helped them with the building manager. Over the months we have learned a lot from our young friends. Through them we have had small tastes of India’s

fine. However, if, for example, you go to campus on Saturday morning to work all day (e.g. 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) to either study, review, or research, chances are you are not working for that entire time. In fact, without proper strategies, you will likely waste much of that time. First of all, if you plan work for a prolonged period of time (two or more hours) without much structure, your brain becomes fatigued and increasingly unable to focus. Moreover, without a study plan your energies are liable to be wasted or misspent on one task while neglecting another. You should plan each day out as closely as you can. For example, if you have a class at 10:00 a.m. and plan to study afterward, be realistic about that time. If class is over at 11:30 a.m., will you eat lunch before you study? Or

rich culture, cuisine, history, religion, music, and much more. Unfortunately, we are among the few Filipino friends they have; there is still a kind of divide between “them” and “us,” and this has not been bridged even after years of their presence. Prejudice is still the norm, along with the colonial mentality that says white skin is attractive while dark skin is not. All the Indians we have met so far are friendly; the problem is from the Filipinos who do not go out of their way to know them. It’s not that they’re not hospitable; we are very welcoming to Caucasians, but not of our darker neighbours, which is a real shame. If we only took the time to get to know them, we would find that they have great stories to tell of their home and of their experiences that, for Filipinos, are truly out of this world. Take Arshad, for example. This young man has gone through dozens of accidents, but his most serious one was falling off a moving train into a jungle

filled with wild animals. He had gone to the door to get some air because he wasn’t feeling well, but he apparently fainted and fell off. He landed in some bushes, unconscious for several hours. He would wake up intermittently, and on one of these occasions he felt a large snake crawling on his leg. He was found many hours later by relatives who refused top give up looking for him. Our small community with Indian students has been growing gradually, and I wish I could tell you all their stories. Suffice it to say that my family’s life has been enriched by this interaction, and we could only wish other Filipinos would look beyond colour and race and see what we’re seeing. Protecting and managing your work time will you study first, and then eat in between? You certainly do not want to skip this meal, as I discuss later. What tasks do you hope to achieve in your study time? In my experience, I can realistically knock off two major tasks, sometimes three. So, what are your priorities, long term and short term? Perhaps in one afternoon you want to do class readings for tomorrow’s class, and build a research bibliography for your upcoming essay. Or, you need to work on your chemistry lab work and design a presentation to class for next week. In doing this, you will need to balance short term and longer term projects. Again, be realistic when you are planning this. In my undergrad, one of my biggest deficiencies was that I assumed I had more time to work than I really did. There are 24 hours

in a day, right? And after sleeping and such there must be plenty of time to work. As the Academic Learning Centre at the University of Manitoba demonstrates, though, out of a 168-hour week, we are left with about 31 hours to study per week. Check it out here and plug in your own schedule to see how much time you actually have to work each week: https://goo.gl/ c3GsnG. Ultimately, you need to be realistic with how much time you have in a day, and how much you can accomplish. To make use of the time you have, you will need to manage your work time. This involves scheduling how much time per task will be given. I find I am most productive when I work based on time allotted, not work that needs to be done. That is, if I planned to See MALEK p7

New dads can experience postpartum depression too Dear Ate Anna, When our first child was born two months ago I was so happy and thankful. But for the last month I have changed. Sometimes I feel angry or sad for no reason. I get upset with my wife over small things, or sometimes I feel like I just can’t do enough and that I will never be a good father. What is happening with me? I am normally a happy person. Virgilio Dear Virgilio, Thank you for writing to me. A new baby is a very exciting addition! Your family is growing and changing, and with your first newborn these changes can come very fast. It is normal to have confusing feelings when there is so much happening in your life. When our lives change in large ways, we often experience a time of transition when we need to get used to our new circumstances. This time of transition usually holds many different challenges and stresses for you and your family. For example, since your baby came into your life, you probably have changed your sleeping habits and your daily routines. Sometimes babies are sick and cry loudly and no matter what you try, they just won’t be comforted. Newborns can also be difficult for our romantic relationships. Often we assume that having babies will bring partners closer together, which makes it feel even harder if they begin to disagree with each other. Everybody here, including the baby, is feeling something new. And these new feelings can be challenging and stressful. Emotions like joy, love, sadness, irritability and crankiness can all be normal responses to a big change like this. It may sound confusing that a parent can feel both joy and sadness at the same time, but it is very common. What you have described to me sounds like it may be a normal response to a stressful situation. There are things that you can

do to help you and your wife through the tough times of this transition. First, be patient with yourselves and each other, as this is a challenging time of change. Allow yourself to make mistakes, and be extra patient when you see your wife struggling. Though your schedule may feel tight, try to take some time in the day for yourself. If you and your wife plan together, maybe you can each have about an hour each day to use just for yourself in whatever way you want to use it. Maybe you can take that hour to take a nap, play some music, or see a friend. If you can’t squeeze an hour, try a half hour or even 15 minutes if that is all you can do. Sometimes a friend or relative may be able to watch the baby for a few hours while you two get some important time together away from your child to reconnect and recharge. Other stress reduction techniques you can do alone or together are meditation, eating healthy, or even taking a walk outside. These can be quite helpful for your body and your mind. If your symptoms last a long time, or if they get a lot worse, then it may be time to reach out for resources to help you through this time. Post-partum depression – a term used when someone feels really sad and stressed after the birth of a baby – can be experienced by parents of all genders. If you experience post-partum depression, you may not feel in control of your own emotions or your actions, and that is a sign that it is time to reach out for help. If you suspect that you may have post-partum depression, it is a good idea to talk to your health care provider about what you are feeling. They may be able to help you with options. Try to talk to your wife and other people in your life that you trust; talking often helps you process your feelings and also lets the people you know best understand what you are experiencing. Resources like saddaddy.com may also help you, and let you know that you are not

alone. Post-baby stress and postpartum depression is a common experience and though it may feel bad, there is hope. There are people and resources that can help you. I encourage you to reach out to these resources, and to take care of yourself as you take care of your baby and your family! Ate Anne Ate Anna welcomes your questions and comments. Options for sponsoring parents & grandparents There is some good news for sponsors who submitted applications to sponsor their parents or grandparents in January 2017 but were not selected. They participated in the first lottery selection system but missed out on the initial selection of 10,000. Cheer up because many who were selected failed to submit complete sponsorship applications. Those who were unsuccessful in the spring of this year may be selected in the upcoming round of invitations, which began on September 6, 2017. Potential sponsors will not be given a second chance of being invited to apply. The current selection is restricted to those sponsors who submitted an Expression of Interest by the end of January 2017 but who have not yet been invited to apply. If you are one of the lucky ones to be invited, be aware that the complete applications must be submitted by December 8, 2017 in order to be accepted. Individuals who were invited in the first round but did not submit an application by

the August 4 deadline will not be given a second chance. Sponsors who did not submit the Expression of Interest in January 2017 will also not be invited. For those who are not covered by the second round of invitations, there is hope. IRCC has confirmed that registration to enter the Parent/Grandparent (PGP) “Interest to Sponsor” pool of potential sponsors will reopen in early 2018. This will allow more potential sponsors to bring their parents or grandparent to Canada as permanent residents. It is important to note that the sponsor eligibility is restricted to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who meet minimum income criteria, such as the Low Income Cut-off (LICO) plus 30 per cent, for the three previous taxation years. The expected target for 2018 is 20,000 applicants; so there are more places for those who qualify. The Super Visa What are the options for potential sponsors who are not eligible? The PGP is not the only option open to Canadian

permanent residents and citizens who want to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada. There is also the Super Visa, which is a multiple-entry visa that allows parents and grandparents to enter Canada as long-term visitors. Super Visa holders may stay in Canada for up to two years on initial entry, and the visa is valid for up to 10 years. Nearly 90,000 Super Visas have been issued since the program was first launched in late 2011 with around 40 per cent of visas granted to citizens of India. Other Asian countries such as China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Philippines dominate the nationalities of Super Visa

holders. For a comparison of the Super Visa and the sponsorship of parents or grandparents (PGP), see the table on this page. There are chances for many parents and grandparents to come to Canada but there is an income requirement for potential sponsors. The system is not perfect and there are still many potential sponsors or hosts who do not qualify. In some cases, Super Visa holders may go on to be sponsored for permanent residence under PGP. Or, there is also the temporary resident visa (TRV), which allows parents and grandparents to visit for up to six months. This option remains open to hosts who do not

meet the income requirements for the Super Visa nor would be eligible for PGP. If you are unsure of which option you are eligible for, you can check information on the IRCC website or contact an immigration lawyer or licensed immigration consultant. Has debt ruined your credit? by Tim St. Vincent Is your debt ruining your credit? Seems like an odd question at first, but they really are two entirely different things. Credit doesn’t cost you anything. It is only when you use it that it becomes debt, and then the costs can be devastating, if not looked after properly. Trying to keep your debt under control is almost a national past time with 50 per cent of Canadians saying that they are living paycheque to paycheque. Having problems keeping your credit score healthy as a result of debt is a struggle many Canadians are facing as they find that their debt is effectively killing their credit. The thought of fixing your credit can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be and it certainly isn’t impossible. At the same time, it’s important to realize that there’s no such thing as a quick fix for your credit – no matter what the credit repair companies tell

you. Every missed payment, every late payment is recorded with the credit bureaus. No fee you pay can hide, alter or change that. The good news is that without paying expensive fees to anyone, you can improve your credit on your own. How do you fix your credit? Well, the answer to that is the easy part. To fix your credit, you need to tackle your debt! Three ways to fix or improve your credit score for free 1. Payment history – Always pay on time. Yes it really is that simple. Make all of your payments on time and as required. No exceptions. This is the single most important piece of advice I can give you and the most effective tool at your disposal. Even if you can’t pay off a credit card, make sure that you make at least the full minimum payment before the due date. This goes for all of your debts and bills. As far as the credit bureaus are concerned, if you

don’t make at least the minimum payment, you have missed a payment. Even if you were just $0.01 short or one day late, it will be recorded as a missed payment. You need to establish a realistic household budget that allows for debt payments. Create reminders to ensure you don’t miss any payments. 2. Keep well below the limit Using up a lot of your credit is a danger sign. If you use on average 50 to 60 per cent of your credit on a regular basis, lenders see you as needing credit to survive. This puts you into a higher risk category, which brings down your credit score. To rebuild your credit score: • Bring your overall balances down. Make payments that actually reduce what you owe • Stay below 50 per cent of your limit on credit cards and other revolving credit. If you go over this, even if you never miss a payment, it could bring down your credit score. Use a budget to ensure that you spend within your means. Don’t charge anything on

your credit cards that you can’t afford to pay off in three to six months. • Pay off what you owe. Find a debt repayment strategy that works for you. 3. Applying for new credit – Don’t do it! Applying for credit that you need and can afford to repay is ok; shopping for credit is another. If you are having problems paying your existing bills, seeking out more credit isn’t a good idea. You may then be seen as a seeker of credit and go into a higher risk category, which again brings down your credit score. When you’re in debt or trying to fix your credit rating, it might seem like applying for new credit is a good idea. It isn’t. Paying for debt with more debt is a sign that you are having significant trouble. More credit equals more debt. You need to focus on what needs to be fixed and not adding to the problem. Identify why your credit rating is low Depending on what’s bringing

your credit score down, applying for a secured credit card and using it wisely might be a way to refresh your financial situation. If you aren’t familiar with a secured credit card, chat with your local bank or credit union. But if you’re trying to fix mistakes of missed or late payments and too much debt, making payments on existing debt is a far better idea. Fixing your credit rating with a credit repair company The bottom line on fixing your credit rating with a credit repair company is: Don’t do it. They may charge you thousands of dollars for what you can do for free. The money you would spend paying for the services of a credit repair company would be better spent paying down your debt. That is what fixes a credit rating. If you’re not able to handle your debt on your own, seek the assistance of a non-profit credit counselling agency and save your money. Tim St Vincent is a retired CFP and is a Certified Educator in Personal Finance with the Credit Counselling Society, a Non-Profit organization. If you wish to contact the Society for further information, assistance or to attend a webinar, please call 1-888-527-8999 or visit www.nomoredebts.org or www. mymoneycoach.ca.

SEPTEMBER 16 - 30, 2017

MALEK... From page 4 write a whole draft of an essay in one evening (perhaps three hours), but don’t finish working until I’m done, I may find myself up until the early hours of the next morning. While the task might be done, the other task for an upcoming project was neglected, and now I’m too tired the next day to work effectively on it. Knowing that you only have, say, 90 minutes to work on drafting a paper, though, you will be motivated to keep focused on the task at hand. Also, to protect your time, make it clear to others that this time is work time. Your smartphones now have the ability to enter do-not-disturb mode – make use of it! The second way to manage your time is to break your study time into time-blocks. Your brain is like your muscles. It can go for long periods of exertion, but must have rest and recuperation in between. If you wanted to tone your upper body, you would not do the equivalent of three sets of five reps all at once – you would do more harm than good. Likewise, if you do not break up your study period, you will experience mental fatigue very quickly. After an hour or two without a break, your focus will begin to weaken and your productivity will decline. For most of my tasks, I like to utilize something called the pomodoro technique (and yes, there is an app for that). In this practice you focus solely on your task for 25 minutes, after which you take a five-minute break. This break should include some physical movement, such as a brief trip to the washroom or to refill your water bottle. After the break, you return once again for a 25-minute work block. After four such cycles (25 minutes of work/five minutes of break), you take a longer 30-minute break. This keeps you focused while preserving your mind’s energy, thus prolonging your mental endurance. This technique also has a built in reward system. Regardless of how much you get done in a work block, you know

PILIPINO EXPRESS that you kept to that time. Use this to encourage further productivity. Of course, this does not work for everyone or for every task, but it can provide a model for you to build what will work for you. Thirdly, before you do any of this, you must take care of yourself, including sleeping well, eating properly, exercising, and limiting alcohol intake. In the last lecture of each of my classes, I remind my students to get a full night’s rest (eight hours) before the final exam, and to make sure they eat properly before they sit the exam. The brain, like your muscles, needs energy and sustenance to operate properly. When it is tired or robbed of energy from food (no, energy drinks or coffee do not count), it will not perform at its best. For your memory and problem-solving abilities to work effectively, your brain must be rested and fed. Coffee and energy drinks can be a useful, if temporary, boost to your mental energies but they come with a cost. When caffeine and other energy drinks leave your system, you will feel more tired than before. The best way to prepare yourself for mental exertion – whether sitting in lecture, studying in the afternoon, or taking an exam –is to rest well and consume water. Slow and steady wins the race, so make sure you are sleeping regularly – including going to bed at the same time and getting up at the same time (your body relies on a schedule to properly regulate its sleep patterns) – eating properly, and exercising. Exercise not only keeps you in shape, but is also a fantastic way to relieve stress that comes from prolonged periods of sitting while studying. The school year is best won by small, steady steps. Do not write that essay the night before it is due. Do not cram for that final exam the day before you write. Pace yourself, take care of yourself; give yourself time to study, and give yourself time to live the other important parts of your life. I will leave you with the wisdom I impart to my students

each year: “Canada in the 21st century is a knowledge-based economy. You will never again be in a position to learn so much so easily, so take advantage of your school years. Drink less beer; watch less television (particularly ‘reality’ TV; if you know more than one fact about anyone with the family name Kardashian, you should be ashamed about how you have misspent your life to this point); spend less time on your PlayStation; don’t linger on Facebook; read more books; and pay attention to Mr. Malek.” Good luck to everyone in the upcoming school year: teachers, students, and parents! Jon Malek is a PhD candidate in History at Western University, and lectures in History at the University of Manitoba.

“All together we can be as one”

“All together we can be as one.” This has got to be one of my favourite lines from the Zumba song, “Be As One.” And unity was evident among the participants of the recently held Zumbayanihan sa Winnipeg on September 9. Everyone from different backgrounds and influences came together in support of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. Zumba instructors and participants were one as they moved and grooved for a good cause. Familiar faces to the fitness program happily mingled with people new to Zumba. The one-and-a-half Zumba master class was also a great way to promote health and wellness. Zumbayanihan was a truly meaningful event for me, as it was like a celebration for my first anniversary as a member of Zumba Instructors Network (ZIN), last September 2. It has been a wonderful journey so far, with a lot of interesting twists and turns. Zumba has given me more than an outlet for my passion for dancing.

It gave me an opportunity to help and inspire others to be more physically active and thereby be more mindful of their health. I have had students tell me that because of attending regular Zumba classes, they are able to maintain their blood sugar levels and keep bad cholesterol at bay. For others who were hesitant to try the fitness program because they think they only have left feet, I tell them there are only “happy feet” in Zumba. Some look forward to class because of newfound friends. Zumba connects people in such a special way. I feel so blessed to have found a niche in the dynamic world of Zumba. And I am grateful to my family and friends who have encouraged and supported me since the beginning of my journey until now. And to all who helped in so many different ways to make our first Zumbayanihan sa Winnipeg a success, Maraming salamat po! “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Psalms 133:1)

Feng shui symbols that power up your feng shui Many people don’t realize how much symbols and signs affect them. Even words have an influence over us when we hear and see them daily. Symbols are so powerful; we dream in symbols each night. The random images your mind shows at night have you often trying to figure out what your subconscious is telling you. Simply seeing a red octagon will tell you to stop. A green light tells you to move your car forward. Symbols, such as a dollar sign or a happy baby also speak to us. A client of mine told me she was unhappy in her marriage and as she began to look around her home she couldn’t help but notice how many images she had in her home with a solitary woman who looked forlorn. When she took those images down and replaced them with images of a couple, a family or just plain landscapes, her marriage took a turn for the better. In feng shui there is a pantheon of images and symbols to choose from to enhance your love life, your financial state, or to bring health or business opportunities to your home. Using symbols and images is a powerful way to shift your personal energy and the energy of your home. Pick the symbols that

are most meaningful to you. If you don’t like a symbol, no matter how much good fortune it’s said to have, it’s no good having it if you don’t like it; so pick images and symbols that you personally enjoy and find pleasing. Make choices that are appealing to you and that will look attractive in your home. Lastly, when you pick a symbol, ask yourself what it means to you and what you want it to represent, versus just buying something and sticking it in a certain corner. This simple, intentional act can help you create a stronger connection – and a stronger result from your chosen symbol. The list below isn’t the complete list by any stretch, but it does include some of the most commonly known and associated feng shui symbols that you can use to power up your home. Health symbols Health is one of your greatest assets. Health can be symbolized by fruits such as apples, fruits, peaches; and flowers/plants such as peach blossoms, bamboo, and pine tree; and animals such as deer, tortoises (which are known to live hundreds of years), cranes; and objects such as the wu luo gourd or vase. Jewellery includes jade for longevity and to purify

blood. Even a simple green plant is a great energizer for wealth. Wealth symbols There are many wealth symbols, from crystals such as citrine and amethyst to diamonds to symbols such as vases, gold ingots, sailing ships, horses and toads. Images such as waterfalls, lakes and fish that swim in them, from arrowanas to the simple goldfish or koi fish are wonderful wealth symbols. Dragons and the phoenix are also potent symbols of power and prestige as are tortoises, dragon tortoises, money trees, Chinese coins, and the laughing or money Buddha. The figure 8 is also a number of abundance and ceaseless wealth. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My office is full of gossips. It gets me down and frustrates me because it interferes with my work. Is there anything I can do to stop the gossip that everyone wants to tell me? Answer: In the office, gossip is often destructive. Even the smallest participation in it can end up back firing on you. In feng shui, one of the best ways to combat gossip is with red colours. Wear red colours to protect and energize yourself. On your desk add a smooth round crystal ball to create smooth relationships with your coworkers. Or, add a figurine of a rooster. Roosters are notoriously good at pecking and warding off gossip and malicious talk. Make sure you keep your desk and office brightly lit. Negativity and negative, gossip-spreading people don’t like the bright light of truth, so adding light will help “lighten up” your workspace. Sharing and unity at ZUMBA®Yanihan WINNIPEG – More than two hundred people packed the North Centennial Recreation Complex gymnasium on Saturday, September 9, for the first Zumbayanihan sa Winnipeg – a dance fitness event for charity. The event featured an hour and a half Zumba fitness master class where participants moved and grooved to the latest, as well as favourite Zumba music led by some of the best members of the Zumba® Instructors Network (ZIN™) in the area. After the class there were snacks, raffle draws and a silent auction. ZINs Lucille Nolasco and Rhiz Aco hosted the event in support of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. “We chose this charity because we both love children,” said Lucille. “And we would like to help children in need and their families, in our own little way. So we thought of doing something we love – Zumba – with the help of our families and friends. Thus, Zumbayanihan came about.” Bayanihan is a Filipino custom derived from a Filipino word bayan, which means nation, town or community. The term bayanihan itself literally means “being in a bayan,” which refers to the spirit of communal unity, work and cooperation to achieve a particular goal. The gym and stage were decorated with colourful bunting to evoke the atmosphere of a Philippine fiesta. “We wanted to share a bit of our Pinoy tradition through the lively ambiance,” said Rhiz. “And we are very grateful to Rey-ar Reyes for our wonderful stage design and set-up, not to mention the Zumbayanihan logo and posters.” The donations will be turned-over to the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba in the coming week.

SPONSOR... From page 1 potential sponsors will be selected using the same randomized list that was prepared to identify the first 10,000 potential sponsors invited to submit an application. Those selected will receive an e-mail from IRCC inviting them to submit an application by December 8, 2017, The potential sponsors who were invited in the first round, but did not submit applications, will not have another chance to

apply in 2017. Those who are not selected to submit applications in 2017 will have the opportunity to show their interest to sponsor their parents and grandparents again in early 2018. Prior to the Trudeau government, the quota of 5000 applications per year made it difficult if not impossible for the hundreds of thousands of applications to be processed. Many immigrant families whose parents are still in their country or origin have been trying to get their sponsorship applications but

to no avail. One such potential sponsor, Lanie (last name withheld), told Pilipino Express that she has tried for years to get her parents but none of her previous submissions to IRCC ever got through.

IRCC… [All of my siblings are here now and they (my parents) have nobody with them in the Philippines… they are getting older now, so we got a lawyer to help us sponsor our mother and father ‘for humanitarian reasons’… it seems impossible to get a letter from IRCC…]” Lanie’s case is just one of the many who never seem to get their parents’ sponsorship applications to first base in the process. “Excited!”

UPAA-MB holds Palarolympics at Assinniboine Park by Isabel Buenaobra On August 19, the UP Alumni & Associates in Manitoba (UPAAMB) held the Palarolympics an Assiniboine Park. About thirty members and their families came to the sports festival, which included games such as tumbang preso, sipa, Chinese garter, agawang base, and sack race. A picnic laid out in the park, as well as board games and sungka were made available to alumni and their family members. The UPAA-MB began in 2007 as an informal online chat among UP graduates. In 2012, the association became more formal and was incorporated to have the following objectives: to promote camaraderie and cooperation among members in a way that upholds the ideals of the University of the Philippines: honour, excellence, leadership and holistic human development; to engage with Filipino and other organizations in various initiatives that promote cultural diversity, social unity and cooperation; to assist members and the Filipino community in Manitoba and in the Philippines in improving opportunities for education and training that will help develop their full potential; and to give due recognition to alumni and other individuals of Filipino heritage for their exemplary achievements and contributions to the Manitoba community. Current UPAA-MB Chair, Lourdes “Des” Casañares, mentioned that since its formalization in 2012, the association has assisted members in getting their professional certifications; linked volunteers with social causes such as the Siloam Mission (focused on people experiencing homelessness and poverty) and Winnipeg Harvest (not-for-profit

Des hopes members this year support the plans for 2017-2018 which include: fundraising events for scholarships for UP students; promotion of sustainable small scale agriculture and introducing floriculture; discussions on cross cultural learning; picnics and social activities to provide a sense of belonging to Filipino newcomers and immigrants; seminars to assist newcomers to integrate in the workplace; and networking for employment and volunteering opportunities. On the Saturday morning of the Palarolympics, while some members cajoled each other over the scores, others huddled, comforted one another and said, “Kumusta na?

At karapatan niyang tumanggi.

At buong pagkagulat niyang

CRISTY... From page 18 walang nagawa ang pagtutulay ng Star For All Seasons.

No offence but history must take care of itself.

CRISTY... From page 20 ng Star For All Seasons ang kaniyang pangako.

Tungkol ‘yun sa mga kasong impeachment against the three government officials of independent institutions. Ang mahalaga, eh, iyong we age gracefully.

– CSF

Winnipeg teams in 2017 NABA tournament Winnipeg NABA took five teams to the 30th annual North American Basketball Association (NABA) tournament held at Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, PA on the Labour Day weekend. Training from spring into summer, these boys dedicated their time and devotion to basketball. Although the Tykes division was shocked by the skills of the other teams, they did not give up. They played hard to get a basket. Starting at this age only grooms them to become stronger players

in the future. The Peewee team battled for the trophy in a division of 17 teams. This group of boys, coached by Eric Fernandez, are new o NABA and they are tough, but the competition that weekend was tougher. They played against, Central Jersey, Toronto, Vaughn and New York. We hope they set their mind to playing again and that they are determined to get a trophy from this tournament in the future. Having learned that Coach Riley had 14 teams in the Bantam division made it tough from the start. Although this team has lots of skill, speed and height, when they got to the court, they came up short a point or two – making it hard to swallow the defeat. They fell behind in the first half and pulled themselves out of the hole, but it wasn’t enough to get the win. Overall they did a great job representing Winnipeg. They are a tough group to beat. The Juniors had a dozen teams to beat. Again, in each game played this team played they were short one by only one

or two points. It got heated on the court at times but the referees kept it cool. It’s tough to really want it and just miss it by such a small margin. “There’s always next year boys,” as Coach Jai would say. Coach Angel gave his farewell speech to these young men at the beginning of the tournament. He will be concentrating on his sons team for the future. The best thing to happen was a farewell championship trophy these boys gave to him from this tournament. It wasn’t easy getting through three buzzer beaters, an overtime game and such rough and tough competition from the seven teams faced to get the gold. Congratulations boys well deserved! Many thanks go to our sponsors, parents, players, and especially the coaches for spending the time with these boys. They couldn’t have done it without all of you! We can do this again next year at NABA Montreal in 2018! – From a report by Rizza Valera Rizza and Sani Valera
