Land of promise As I write this, the country is waiting for President Rodrigo Duterte to sign the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), which he had promised to do within 48 hours of receiving it. He was supposed to sign it on July 23 right before his State of the Nation Address (SONA), and it would have been a major achievement that he could truly brag about. But an internal issue in the House of Representatives prevented him from doing so. Members of Congress were scheduled to ratify it during their last regular session in the morning of that day, but the session was abruptly adjourned in an apparent bid to keep Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from staging a coup against House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez. The House did manage to ratify it the next day, and as I write this, Duterte has had less than 24 hours to read it before signing it. As a peace worker I am very excited about this development, but I realize that a lot of people outside of Mindanao (and even within the island actually) do not know what the new law is really about. To put it simply, it is the fulfilment of the peace deal – called the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro
(CAB) – signed between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in 2014. The BOL is seen to address the historical injustices committed against the Moro people, giving them the right to govern themselves based on their own culture and ways. Following are some of the salient features of the BOL: Bangsamoro Transition Authority The BTA shall be composed of 80 members appointed by the President. The elected officials of the Regional Government shall be part of the BTA. Likewise, the non-Moro indigenous communities, youth, women, settler communities, traditional leaders, and other sectors shall have representatives in the BTA. 75-25 wealth sharing term The panels agreed on the 75-25 wealth-sharing term in favour of the Bangsamoro. This increases the share of the Bangsamoro in government tax revenues by five per cent compared with the current 70 percent being received by the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) from national internal revenue taxes, fees, and charges, as well as taxes imposed on natural resources.
Block Grant The committee has adopted the automatic allocation of the annual block grant for the Bangsamoro region. This is equivalent to five per cent of the net national internal revenue of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC). Special Development Fund The National Government will allocate P5 billion to the Bangsamoro annually for a period of 10 years. This is equivalent to P50 billion for the entire implementation. The amount will be used for the rehabilitation of conflict-affected areas within the region. Shari’ah or Islamic Law Primarily, regular courts within the Bangsamoro will continue to exercise their judicial functions provided by national law. While adopting a justice system that complies with the Constitution, the Bangsamoro has been allowed to implement Shari’ah exclusively to cases involving Muslims. Meanwhile, tribal laws will be applicable to disputes of indigenous peoples within the Bangsamoro. Rehabilitation and development The livelihood and other needs of members of the MILF/ Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Force, the MNLF/Bangsamoro Armed Force, and, their women’s auxiliary forces shall be addressed by rehabilitation, reconstruction
and development packages as part of the normalization process. A Special Development Fund shall be provided by the National government for conflict-affected communities. The 10-year fund is P50 Billion. P5 Billion shall be released annually, for 10 years, starting upon the ratification of the BOL. More work ahead As Presidential Peace Adviser Jesus Dureza keeps saying, the signing of the BOL into law is not a “magic bullet” that solves all the problems of Mindanao. It is, he emphasizes, only a first step, and much work still needs to be done. The first hurdle is the fact that a plebiscite within the core territory needs to be held within 150 days after the effectivity of the BOL. At present there are still a lot of misconceptions about the law, and there needs to be a massive information campaign to tell the people directly affected how much they can benefit from having a Bangsamoro government. But at the very least, the first step has been taken, and it gives hope that Mindanao can finally take its place as “The Land of Promise.” The views and opinions expressed in this column are those of the original author, and do not necessarily represent those of the Pilipino Express publishers. Grief and loss – a different journey for each person Counselling sessions with my clients is very privileged work. I learn from the wisdom they have gained through pains and struggles. I walk with them as they endure emotional pain. Some of the most meaningful work that I do is talking to people who have lost a loved one. Sometimes, the person that has died is a spouse, parent, sibling, friend, and even a child. As they talk about learning to live without their loved one, they feel a wide range of emotions such as despair, anger, fear, regret, and guilt. Along my journey with them, I have learned several things about grief and loss. First, everyone handles grief differently. The same event will have a different impact and meaning for different people. Statements such as, “I can’t believe she’s not crying right now,” and, “He’s acting so normal,” do not recognize the fact that there is no right way to grieve. The only thing that is certain is that grief will touch us all sooner or later.
Grief can have psychological, physical, social and spiritual effects. Psychologically, one can experience intense emotions such as sadness, anger, guilt, fear and shame. We can be easily distracted and unable to focus, mentally exhausted, confused, and lack motivation. Common physical symptoms can include body aches, difficulty sleeping, and exhaustion. Our social relationships can be affected as family and friends struggle to understand and try to support us. It is common to cope by withdrawing and wanting to be alone. And spiritually, our beliefs might be shaken or strengthened. So how do you cope with emotions that can feel so devastating? 1. Tell yourself that this grief journey is yours and yours alone. Although you might have others to help you along the way, what worked for others in their healing process might not necessarily work for you. 2. Accept the reality of the loss. Know that change and
adjustment must follow. 3. Be open to the pain of grief. Let yourself feel intense emotions. Covering it up will tax your mental health heavily. Whether you grieve in private or confide in a friend, allow yourself to feel sad or angry for a certain period of time. Bereavement groups can be especially helpful as you can take comfort in the fact that you are not alone and can share your story with others going through similar experiences. 4. Adjust to a new environment after the loss. This includes external adjustments (how you function daily), internal adjustments (for example, developing a new identity as a widow) and spiritual adjustments (addressing changes in beliefs, values and understanding of the world). 5. Honour the bond you have with the deceased person, ended relationship, or lost aspect of your identity. Realize that it will continue to exist, but in a different form. Give yourself permission to remember.
6. Find a creative, meaningful way to remember and say goodbye such as writing a letter, making a scrapbook, singing a special song, or telling a story about your loved one to others. Some people create a memory box where they fill a special container with objects that remind them of their loved one. 7. And finally, understand that you cannot fix or cure grief. The loss that hurts you now will likely continue to hurt in different forms. Pain will ebb and flow just like the ocean tides, at times feeling overwhelming and almost too much to bear, and at other times be so still and calm, that you forget for a little while. But perhaps it is not meant to completely go away. Because to stop feeling would be to stop living, to stop journeying, and to stop remembering. At the end of the day, we never want to stop remembering the person that we miss so dearly. Cheryl Dizon-Reynante is a licensed therapist with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

Can a Mediterranean diet lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease? You may know that a Mediterranean diet — rich in fruits, vegetables, olive oil, legumes, whole grains and fish — offers many heart-healthy benefits. But a Mediterranean diet may also benefit your brain. Studies show people who closely follow a Mediterranean diet are less likely to have Alzheimer’s disease than people who don’t follow the diet. Research suggests a Mediterranean diet may: • Slow cognitive decline in older adults • Reduce the risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) — a transitional stage between the cognitive decline of normal aging and the more-serious memory problems caused by dementia or Alzheimer’s disease • Reduce the risk of MCI progressing into Alzheimer’s disease • It’s unclear which parts of the Mediterranean diet might protect brain function. Researchers speculate that making healthy food choices may improve cholesterol and
blood sugar levels and overall blood vessel health, which may in turn reduce the risk of MCI or Alzheimer’s disease. Another theory suggests that following a Mediterranean diet may help prevent brain tissue loss associated with Alzheimer’s. But for now it’s difficult to say what exactly explains the relationship between following a Mediterranean diet and reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Some research shows that individuals with moderate seafood consumption had fewer Alzheimer’s-related changes in their brains among people carrying the apolipoprotein E (APOE e4) gene, which is thought to increase Alzheimer’s risk. But overall, evidence isn’t strong enough to show that the Mediterranean diet reduces Alzheimer’s disease risk. One issue is that most studies on the effects of diet on dementia are based on dietary questionnaires completed by participants who may have trouble recalling what they ate or have memory problems. So, one study used a modified
food questionnaire developed for use in older adults to address this issue. The study looked at whether following a Mediterranean diet, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet designed to treat high blood pressure or a hybrid diet that combined aspects of both diets known as the MediterraneanDASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The results showed that people who strictly followed any of the three diets had a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Moreover, even modest adoption of the MIND diet approach, such as eating two vegetable servings a day, two berry servings a week and one fish meal a week, appeared to lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. More research and clinical trials are needed to know to what degree a Mediterranean diet prevents Alzheimer’s or slows the progression of cognitive decline. Nonetheless, eating a healthy diet is important to stay physically and mentally fit. – By Mayo Clinic Staff With Dr. Jonathan Graff-Radford, M.D. – Courtesy Mayo Clinic News Network

Express Entry and MPNP Invitations to Apply Express entry continues to be the focus for economic immigration to Canada. On the July 11, 2018 draw, the federal department reports that 3,750 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) were issued. This is a new record. The Express Entry is all the rage and the provincial immigration programs are following suit with Saskatchewan, Prince Edward Island, British Columbia and Manitoba, to mention only a few, moving to introduce an enhanced application stream or express entry-linked processing stream. The application activity at the federal level is considerable but so too the PNP, which comprises roughly 30 per cent of economic immigration to Canada. This province has the Manitoba Express Entry Pathway under the Skilled Worker Overseas Stream. The numbers of applicants selected from the Expressions of Interest (EOI) inventory under this stream falls significantly under the
federal counterpart. But there are invitations and they are continuing over time. EOI draw #48, on July 9, 2018, had 132 invitations issued for persons who have a valid Express Entry ID and job seeker validation code. This number was down significantly from the 202 invitations sent out as part of EOI Draw #47 on July 6, 2018. But the EOI Draw #48 surpassed the EOI Draw #46 of June 21, 2018 where 114 invitees had a valid Express Entry ID and job seeker validation code. It is somewhat premature to make any judgements on the continuing Manitoba Express Entry Pathway. The Express Entry candidates are a small number of the total number of candidates invited to apply by the MPNP. Unlike Draw #48, which only reported on 132 candidates with Express Entry IDs, previous draws had invitations from other categories of persons. In addition to those listed above, Draw #47 issued 104 invitations
to Skilled Workers in Manitoba with the lowest-ranked candidate invited assessment number of 564 and 32 Skilled Workers Overseas with a lowest score of 639. Draw #46 reported 213 invitations for Skilled Workers in Manitoba with the lowest score of 522 as well as 115 for Strategic Recruitment Initiative with a lowest score of 702 for the Skilled Worker Overseas Stream, which also included 150 invitations for applicants with close family supporters with the lowest score of 579. EOI Draw #45 on May 31, 2018, reported 187 invitations for Skilled Workers in Manitoba with a lowest ranking score of 485 as well as 53 Skilled Workers Overseas under a Strategic Recruitment Initiative with a lowest score of 698 along with 262 invitations for close relatives abroad etc. with the lowest ranking score of 584. It is significant to note that MPNP application activity is ongoing under both the Skilled Workers in Manitoba and Skilled Workers Overseas, as well
as evidence of some activity for past few draws under the Manitoba Express Entry pathway. It is important for all potential applicants to be aware of the options that are open to them. If you or your friends and relatives have an existing Express Entry EOI, then you have the choice of waiting for selection by the federal department or you may have more immediate success by also applying to the MPNP. There is sufficient evidence, based on EOI Draws 46, 47 and 48 that the Manitoba Express Entry Pathway may be a viable alternative for you. It is true that the federal government has selected thousands with individual draws, which exceed 3,000 Invitations to Apply. There may be a number of ways you or your family, friends, and relatives may qualify under the MPNP or the Federal Express system. It is important to be aware not only of the invitation application activity of the provincial program, but also its
federal counterpart. In terms of the federal option, it is important to be aware of the requirements under the Federal Skilled Work Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program or the Canadian Experience Class. You may be invited or you can also consider the option of applying to Manitoba, especially if your EOI was accepted by the federal Express Entry and you were given a valid Express Entry ID and job seeker validation code. If you need help with the application streams, you can always check with a licensed immigration practitioner – either a lawyer or a consultant. The subtlety of change: a quiet transformation Growth. It may seem slow, as if it’s taking forever, or it’s not happening – but rest assured, it is. Think of a time when a Tita whom you hadn’t seen in awhile exclaimed, “Ay! Malaki ka na!” To you, it may seem you haven’t grown, you haven’t changed , but to her, and to others, transformation is evident. ANAK as an organization has been around for 12 years, developing resources like books, videos, music, and mentorship programs. By fostering a love for education, we can tell our own stories in the academe and in mainstream narratives. As volunteers, we are committed to empowering Filipino-Canadian youth through capacity building and providing both a safe space to process our thoughts on identity and a platform from which to amplify our voices. This past year is a good representation of transformative growth, with our focus on outreach, marketing, and community bridge building. While regular programming paused for re-evaluation and redesign, we took the opportunity to get creative and accomplish some serious planning and preparation for our upcoming Youth Forum and a new Kapatid Program (stay tuned!). ANAK also continued to be active in the community through initiatives such as “Sewing Roots Kasaysayan Project: Oral
History Archive of Winnipeg’s Filipino Canadian Garment Recruits, 1968-1980” as well as through various collaborations with strengthened connections to schools, local organizations, and other heritage groups. We even got the chance to explore new avenues, including developing a special Mango Float treat with Oh Doughnuts in celebration of Philippine Heritage Week and having ANAK Publishing’s “Where’s Winnipeg?” featured during Read by Queens at the Millennium Library. In addition, we remained committed to offering the ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence to graduating high school students. This year’s scholarship applicants had the challenge of tackling the question of how values and stereotypes have had an impact on their identity – not an easy task considering the potentially polarizing discussions that could arise from these topics. All the applicants were incredibly articulate, measured, and respectful in expressing their opinions. North Winnipeg to receive funding of $48,591 Nic Curry, MLA for Kildonan, announced on July 20 that the Manitoba government is investing in important community projects in North Winnipeg. Through community development programs such as Community Places, Partner 4 Growth, and Hometown Manitoba, the Progressive Conservative government is providing $48,591 for three improvement projects in North Winnipeg. Projects being funded include: • Roof re-shingling at Aleph Bet Child Life Enrichment Program. • Playground shelter construction and awning replacement at Huron Child Care. • Yoga studio repairs at The Wellness Institute at Seven Oaks General Hospital. “I am very pleased that our government is making these investments in North Winnipeg,” said MLA Curry. “Projects like these make our communities stronger and improve the quality of life for Manitoba families.” This funding announcement is part of a major investment in community development programs that support important community projects across Manitoba.

Canada Child Benefit increased Two years ago, the Government of Canada introduced the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) – a simpler, taxfree, new child benefit better targeted to those who need it most. Since then, the CCB has helped lift more than half a million people – including 300,000 children – out of poverty, and nine out of 10 families now have more money in their pockets to help with the high cost of raising their kids. The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced on July 20, 2018, that the CCB has increased to keep up with the cost of living. This change comes two years ahead of schedule and will give hardworking parents more money each month to buy the things their families need.
The indexation of the CCB will provide an additional $5.6 billion in support to Canadians and their families over the next five years. When the cost of everyday essentials like groceries goes up, families will receive more in benefits each month. For the 2018-19 benefit year, the CCB will have a maximum annual benefit of $6,496 per child under 6 years old and $5,481 per child aged 6 to 17 years. On average, families will receive $6,800 a year, tax-free, to put healthy food on the table, pay for summer camp, and buy new clothes for the upcoming school year. “Since its introduction, the Canada Child Benefit has given much needed relief to parents across the country who
are working hard to make ends meet. Starting today, Canadian families will receive even more money. We promised Canadians that we would index the CCB to inflation, and I’m proud we’ve delivered, two years earlier than expected,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Across Canada, CCB payments worth over $23 billion benefit nearly 3.7 million Canadian families every year. In 2017, a single parent earning $35,000 with two children received more than $11,000 tax-free through the CCB. Today, thanks to the accelerated indexation of the CCB, they will see that number go up by nearly $600 for the 2019-20 benefit year. Source: PMO office

There’s a saying that success is just the accumulation of good habits. It’s true. The more you do to help yourself to be successful – the more successful and prosperous you’ll become. Success and the wealth and acclaim that come with it aren’t as much a secret as much as it is a habit. Having a happy home life, successful career, ability to go and buy what you like when you want it, this brings happiness and true wealth. There are many people who have money, but lack wealth. Recently, my husband and I are shopping for a new home. The houses are beautiful, but there is little furniture, or what’s there is of poor quality. It’s as though the owner’s money went into the homes, but there was no money to furnish the beautiful home with beautiful belongings. Is that a wealthy homeowner? No. That’s the paradox of wealth. Having money (or a big house or a nice car) doesn’t mean you are wealthy any more than breathing makes you healthy. Having real wealth is about having a beautiful home, but also the ability to furnish it beautifully. Real wealth means you may have a wonderful car and beautiful home – but you also have accumulated wealth. Accumulated wealth brings security, comfort, and is relaxing. But bringing money into your life requires healthy wealth habits to help maintain it. I see clients often who say they have plenty of money coming in when I ask them how their financial status is, yet their homes are like leaking ships – and I wonder how long they will stay afloat. You may be at the point in this program that

you are thinking you have too much feng shui to do! I promise you, though, that if you will work at it and build on it, the feng shui you have built will gain momentum and will increase with time — and accumulate. My goal is to help you to develop true wealth – the kind that helps you to relax, feel confident and secure – and have fun with it, too! If you’ve read the passage Paradox of Our Age by the Dalai Lama, you’ll understand the wealth energy that I am trying to impart to you. It’s about true wealth, not just money. Real wealth is the abundant, accumulated resource that’s there for you to use as you wish when you wish, and that keeps your family and security safeguarded. Money is easy, but simple money can become meaningless when it is only money and not wealth. Creating wealthy habits will have the effect of lifting your personal energy – and that is a powerful attractant to real wealth. 1. Repair broken energy Broken energy comes from, well, broken things. When your door scrapes against the threshold, it imbues your home with negative, irrigating energy. If your dishes are chipped, you are eating off of broken energy. This drains positive wealth energy and makes your house drained and more yin. Our houses must be energized and broken things bring the energy level down — and that affects our prosperity. Keep your clothes, your home, your car and your doors in good working order. What’s broken that is draining your energy? 2. Putting wealth in, not just out Too often in our lives, we become accustomed to money

The feng shui habits that create wealth and prosperity
flowing in and out of our lives — and not accumulating. The money comes in, the bills get paid, and the money flows right back out again. Energizing your home and life for wealth means putting energy into it. This includes making deposits into your accounts. Get into the habit of putting money in instead of just paying out. This energy builds over time — and so does your bank account. And you’d be surprised how that will make you feel. Do you even have a retirement or savings account? If so, set up automatic weekly or monthly withdrawals. Or, join your bank’s program that rounds off purchases to the nearest dollar and puts the extra amount into a savings account. Do you buy a large soda or fancy coffee every day? Stop and then put that money into a piggy bank. Even a $1.50 drink each day amounts to $547 at the end of a year. Are you drinking $500’s worth of diet sodas? What’s important is that you see yourself as accumulating money, not just being a pass-thru for it. 3. Energize your home Keep your home energized with fresh paint, lush landscaping. Just like an employer matching your RRSP, match your home with an investment in beautifying and updating your surroundings. Unlike a car, money put into a home will be an investment that will pay you back in energy — and if you sell it — in dollars.

More importantly, by energizing your home, you magnetize your home for wealth energy. Landscaping is a very important ingredient because it brings vital dragon energy to the home. Lush flowers, trees and plants are healthy and invigorating and lift the energy of the house. 4. Energize your image Many times when someone doesn’t feel good, they have a stuffed closet. A closet that’s rammed with shoes and clothes that are out-dated will cause you to feel out-dated too! If you are ready to “look the part” of a wealthy, happy and abundantly prosperous person, turn to your closet to get rid of the clothing that no longer suits you or is part of an out-dated image. If you have weight to lose, this could be even more important for you! Pare down your closet – including those articles of clothing that you used to fit it but haven’t in a long time. Wealth energy means moving energy and when you are stuck in an old look and out-dated image, this can stop the energy flowing to you. 5. Energize your finances. Get a red wallet and cheque book, put your investment and banking account information and statements in red folders, write checks in red ink. Put bills into blue or black folders so they aren’t energized. Have a small basket to hold bills — and keep it small so your bills stay small. Clean out and organize your
financial files and your purse or wallet. Streamline your credit cards so that you don’t have too many, limiting them to three or less. Add grains of sea salt to your wallet to “draw” money, just like seawater will draw soreness away from achy muscles! 6. Believe Do you believe you can be wealthy and prosperous? Do you think you deserve it? Do you really feel that way or are you just intellectualizing it? It’s so important that you believe you are worthy of being a prosperous person, someone who doesn’t just make a living, but makes a life with the money you earn. Observe your thoughts about wealth and money and see if it’s really not you who is standing in the way of money. Spend time thinking about your thoughts about money and wealth and ask yourself, what could you do today, right now, that could change your financial picture? Go for gold! There are times when I meet new and old friends and I encourage them to try Zumba fitness, but they tell me they have two left feet, they can’t follow the steps, they think it’s hard, etc. It’s a big misconception, really. The Zumba fitness program caters to all levels of fitness. Young or old, slow or fast. Everybody can do Zumba! Particularly for the 55-plus
population who need or want to stay in shape and get their regular dose of exercise without feeling like its exercise, there is Zumba® Gold! This is perfect for active older adults who are looking for a modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves you love at a lower intensity. This class features easy-tofollow Zumba choreography
that focuses on balance, range of motion and coordination. After class, participants will feel empowered and strong! And even if you are 54 and younger, and you want slower, simpler movements, Zumba® Gold is your fitness program. Recently, I have completed Zumba® Gold training with the wonderful ZES Ricardo Marmitte. You would think that Zumba Gold would be easier and simpler to teach, right? Wrong. It takes a lot of patience and since the movements are slower, they are actually harder on the body, especially if you are used to doing faster and more complex movements such as in a regular Zumba class. All in all, Zumba® Gold training was enjoyable and rewarding. My fellow ZINs and I are excited to share our new knowledge and skills for better health and fitness.

TELUS International Philippines leads the way for Corporate Social Responsibility Itinataguyod ng TELUS ang halaga ng pagiging mapagbigay at serbisyo sa kapuwa. Kamakailan lang, pinagkalooban ng Asia CEO Awards 2017 ang TELUS International Philippines ng Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Company of the Year award para sa kontribusyon nito sa Filipino community. The annual ceremony awards the most accomplished leadership teams at individuals operating sa Philippines at sa South East Asian region. Sa ngayon, higit 10 years nang bahagi ang TELUS ng Philippine Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry, creating jobs, providing digitally-enabled customer experiences and highquality outsourcing solutions. With five sites in the Philippines at higit sa 13,500 Filipino team members, TELUS is not just making an impact in the industry, it’s uplifting the community as well. Kamakailan lang, TELUS International Philippines extended its leadership and support to Brigada Eskwela sa pamamagitan ng TELUS Days of Giving noong May 12, 2018. Brigada Eskwela is an annual Department of Education initiative para mabigyan ang
This year’s TELUS Days of Giving is one of the biggest to date, with team members renovating and refurbishing 11 school buildings, 66 classrooms, and more than 3,250 chairs. “During these five years of giving of our team members’ hearts and hands to Brigada Eskwela, we have provided 54,000 volunteer hours to six schools, where we have meaningfully impacted more
than 41,000 students, including the 6,000 students who attend Kamuning Elementary School and Quezon City High School,” sabi ni Jeffrey Puritt, President at CEO ng TELUS International. Tuloy-tuloy ang pagtulong ng TELUS sa libo-libong mga pamilya, underprivileged children and students sa pamamagitan ng partnerships with nongovernment organizations gaya ng Gawad Kalinga, Bantay Bata, Bantay Kalikasan, Virlanie Foundation, at Hands on Manila – bringing its unique caring culture outside the organization to the communities where its team members live, work, and serve. The company also supports the community when in need, mobilizing thousands para makaabot ang food at relief goods sa iba’t-ibang bahagi ng
bansa. As testament to the deeply ingrained culture of caring and giving back, nakapag-donate ang mga TELUS volunteers ng 116,000 hours of volunteerism activities at Php35,600,000 mula
2007 hanggang September 2017. To learn more about TELUS’ commitment to the community and its Give Where We Live philosophy, please visit telus. com/community.

CRISTY... At tama ako! We would listen to the songs on the radio and I’d be humming along - making up the words along the way. “ Yvanne’s father Ed, played in a marching band back home [in the Philippines]. and was considering going into music right after high school graduation. However, that plan did not materialise. She instead took and completed a Business Administration degree. And that time away from her first love made her realize how great her passion was for it. “After graduating University, I knew that I still felt very passionate about music and was committed to exploring my potential in the industry. With that said, I saved up so that I could explore my passion for music and study in Toronto.” There in the big city, she learned more about music and honed her skills in song writing. She gets inspiration from almost everything, not just personal experiences, and from world happenings. “A lot of the songs I write is born out of a title. A title idea comes to mind that I get excited about, I quickly grab a pen and
Photos by Maui Zamora (MP Studium) paper, and the rest is history! The process can take anywhere from 10 minutes to days depending on the parameters I set for myself.” Recently, Yvanne released a self-composed song “My Heart is Home”, which she said in part, was derived from personal experience. “Music is a powerful tool to bring people together. Music has the opportunity to move people and make change happen in a very intimate and real way. I am on this journey in the music industry not just because I love writing and performing music - but because I am determined to see more representation of Filipino artists in the mainstream [Canadian] music industry.”

Wala kami talagang destinasyon. Gusto lang namin mamasyal. At

Nais ng Ottawa that the necessary medicine and services be included to Canada’s Universal Pharmacare programs.
*** Naitalaga nang lahat ang pitong commissioners ng Commission on Elections for the May 13, 2019 mid-term national and local elections. *** Ang pangunahing political and economic issues ngayon ay tungkol sa federal form of government and the Build, Build, Build project of the administration. Minamadali ng Duterte administration ang panukalang federal form of government. Kailangan bang madaliin?
Gayunman, nabalitang ayon sa World Bank, tinatayang ang local output or gross national product

grew 6.7 per cent at mananatili ngayon sa 2018. Nabalita rin na ang direct foreign investment from July 2016 hanggang March ng current year will be more or less 16 billion dollars.
Sabi ni Kris, “Just landed in Jakarta. Ang fans – Wil-Kris na raw! Turon sells 42 million to claim “superstar” snack status MANILA – For 37 years, Helen Castillo has filled one side street in the country’s financial district with the smell of hot caramel, waiting for customers clad in power suits and construction hats to line up for their daily fix of the country’s unofficial snack. The turon or banana fritter is the “superstar” of Filipino desserts, an enduring presence in hawker stands, office cafeterias and groceries. The country’s largest mall operator, SM, said that in 2016 alone it sold 42 million pieces of turon over two years. Priced at P15 each and with vendors apprehensive about raising prices, turon has also challenged faster than expected inflation. “Para siyang si Nora Aunor. Hindi mawawala ang superstar ng mga merienda,” [It’s like Nora Aunor. The superstar of merienda will never fade,] said Samantha Rivera, who tends to a “Jollijeep” rolling store in Makati. Castillo, 60, said turon is a staple in her menu because it is exactly what busy workers are looking for in the middle of the afternoon – quick, cheap and satisfying. Kinse pesos ‘tsaka softdrinks ok na,” [They don’t get tired of it here in Makati where it’s the cheapest snack around. For P15 and soft drinks, you’re good to go,] Castillo told ABS-CBN News. Turon millions The 24 million turon pieces sold in 2016 was 33 per cent higher than 18 million in the previous year, SM Investments said on its website. The company has set a turon standard at eight inches long, two inches in diameter and aims for a uniform taste across stores, SM said. “The success of turon is proof that Filipinos tend to look for familiar taste at a price that’s “sulit” (worth the money),” said SM Markets vice chairman Herbert Sy. Marjorie Montalban, a staffer at an apparel store in one SM Mall joined the queue for turon during a break from work.
Sana sa susunod banana cue naman,” [This is the only turon available here, if I go out, it might rain. I hope in the future they offer banana cue,] Montalban told ABSCBN News. Inflation proof? Inflation has held at its highest levels in five years in recent months as elevated fuel prices in the world market pushed food prices higher. Food inflation alone in June was at 6.1 per cent, higher than the headline number 5.2 per cent. Turon vendor Emerlita Gallos undercuts the competition by selling her desserts at P10 apiece and she said she would not raise prices soon. If I raise prices, not everyone might have enough money to buy,] she told ABS-CBN News. She has been selling turon for 28 years. Gallos said she sells 200 pieces of turon daily, double the competition. Unlike Gallos, Rivera said she might raise prices due to higher prices of sugar and cooking oil. With or without a price hike, IT supervisor Kim Crisostomo said he would continue having turon as a snack everyday. Crisosotomo spends P50 every week on banana fritters. “Parang softdrinks lang ‘yan eh, tumaas pero binibili pa rin,” [It’s like softdrinks. Prices go up, but people still buy it,] Crisostomo told ABS-CBN News. I feel it won’t fade from the scene even is prices go up. Turon is turon,] Rivera said. SOURCE: Jessica Fenol, ABS-CBN News
