DECEMBER 16 - 31, 2018

The spirit of the holidays I hear a lot of my contemporaries (that is, older people) complaining about how the celebration of Christmas has deteriorated over the years, but I think they are misremembering the holidays of their past. It goes without saying that Christmas is a highly commercialized season, with all malls, stores, restaurants, and other establishments cashing in on the year-end windfall that people receive in the form of bonuses and 13th-month pays. Gifts have to be bought, food has to be eaten, shows have to be seen – all these translate to one ka-ching after another at the cash register. As I walk around in Davao City I sometimes get overwhelmed at how materialistic things can be, with shops offering products and services as the “perfect” gift for Christmas. Even the decorations are all about material things and how this or that can complete your holiday. It feels like December is the most wonderful time of the year only because of the things we can get. But to say that it is more materialistic and commercialized

now than before is unfair. I remember growing up in this kind of celebration, and I’ve never known it to be otherwise. The emphasis for us kids was always on what we can get from our parents, titos and titas, and our ninongs and ninangs. On Christmas Day it was customary for us to go to our relatives, do the mano po, and put out our hands in expectation of the money they would give. In a very real sense our happiness was dependent on how much money we got. Even carolling has always been about money. I’ve never seen carollers do it just to entertain or bless people with music; there has always been that expectation in the end that the listeners would have to dig into their pockets to give an amount. Of course malls would always put up shows for free, but the intent was (and is) to draw more people in because that translates to more sales. I think those who seem to think things have worsened over the years don’t remember that it was always like this – at least since I was a child in the 60s and 70s. Perhaps it is more pronounced

now because of the larger number of establishments and buyers, and because the Internet magnifies it, but focus has always been on material things. But I think there’s a positive side to this also. All these material things almost always end up in the hands not of the ones who bought them but of loved ones, friends, co-workers, neighbours, or even anonymous recipients. In other words, most of us buy things not for ourselves but for others. It warms my heart when I see grown men at the stuffed toy shop buying pink teddy bears, or when I see non-musicians asking the clerk at the guitar store what kind of capo they should buy for their friends. While on the surface it could be all about material things, the spirit of it is always about giving. And how about those parties? Christmas is the best excuse for gathering together for food and drinks, letting down our hair, singing a few songs on videoke, and exchanging gifts with one another. Say what you will about how big business has hijacked Christmas and now forces us to go on a buying spree; at least it also inadvertently fosters a sense

of community among us during the holidays. We all need this break from a year of hard work. And of course, as cliché as it may sound, all this gift-giving, merrymaking, and partying only make sense if we remember what we are actually celebrating. At this point in my life I no longer take it against people to make “Christ” an afterthought in the festivities because I know deep inside most of us have it in our heart that the “reason for the season” is Jesus. I used to be preachy about making the spirit of giving a year-round thing, but I have come to realize that we all somehow know that giving is not supposed to be during the holidays only. It’s actually a great thing that we could set aside a few days in the year for a special celebration that draws all of us closer together. What is the provincial International Education Stream? The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) continues to refine its programs to meet the needs of foreign applicants. In November 2018, the MPNP announced the opening of a new International Education Stream (IES) for Manitoba graduates who meet the needs of industry. It is a faster way for nomination and permanent resident status. However, the provincial website warns potential applicants, “if you are an international student who graduated in another province in Canada, you will not be eligible under this stream but may be eligible under the renewed Skilled Worker in Manitoba Stream.” At this time the IES has three pathways for foreign students, including: • Career Employment Pathway • Graduate Internship Pathway • International Student Entrepreneur Pilot The Career Employment Pathway offers a quicker way to nomination for post-secondary students who graduate in Manitoba and find employment

in the province in an occupation on Manitoba’s published InDemand Occupations List. If you meet these conditions you will be eligible to apply to the MPNP immediately after graduation and obtaining a minimum one-year job offer. You must have a valid English or French proficiency certificate with a minimum of CLB/NCLC 7 or equivalent. The applicant must also demonstrate possession of settlement funds equivalent to the Low Income Cut-off (LICO) requirements for their family size, or be employed full-time in a long-term job in the province. The Graduate Internship Pathway is open to international student master and doctoral graduates who hold internships that contribute to innovation in Manitoba industry. Graduates who are involved with the Mitacs research organization in Manitoba can apply to the MPNP immediately upon graduation, whether or not they have a job offer, but must have completed a master or doctoral program in Manitoba within the past three

years and provide evidence of minimum language proficiency of CLB/NCLC 7. The applicant must demonstrate that they possess settlement funds at LICO standards or have employment earnings. The applicant must be a resident of Manitoba at the time of application submission and demonstrate an intention to reside in the province following nomination. The third pathway is the International Student Entrepreneur Pilot, which can accommodate up to 20 international student graduates per calendar year who can pursue entrepreneurship rather than employment. The students must hold 51 per cent equity in the venture and operate the business as a senior manager onsite in Manitoba for at least six months prior to nomination, while on a work permit, consistent with the requirements set forth on their Business Performance Agreement (BPA). The language requirement is CLB/NCLC 7. There is also an age component because applications are restricted to youth, aged 21 to

35 years of age and have a net worth equivalent to LICO, with their personal net worth verified by a third-party approved by the MPNP. The new International Education Stream is a positive indicator of Manitoba’s intention to remain competitive in the effort to attract the brightest and best of foreign students to Manitoba and provide much needed expertise for Manitoba industry. It provides real opportunities for foreign graduates of Manitoba postsecondary learning institutions. The province offers pathways to permanent residency for those foreign students and graduates needed by the growing provincial economy. Dining room feng shui – make your holidays happier Well, it’s that time of year again! In North America, we celebrate all our blessings and bounty with holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah that feature food and family. For some families, this is only the first, or maybe, second time they have eaten in the dining room this year. Regardless of whether you dine in there regularly or not, there are some simple feng shui rules about the dining room that you will want to observe anytime. Are there arguments that start at the table? Excess wood energy is to blame. Put a red or orange tablecloth on the table to diffuse arguments and exhaust the wood energy that gets everyone bickering. The red colour will make everyone hungry and focus on the food instead of who got Aunt Martha’s china. Alternatively, use a candle in your centerpiece to burn up excess wood energy. Provide for fun. Give your guests something to do such as games, cards, word games that get them interacting (instead of just staring at the TV). These are great fun for adults and kids and may only require a pad and a pencil for great fun that’s contained and gets everyone participating. And, best of all, all that fun and laughing bring your house beautiful happiness chi!

Burn pine or cinnamon scented candles, The natural scent from trees like cinnamon (a type of tree bark) stimulates appetite. Avoid sweet floral scents. Arrange seating to face one another. Position the chairs and sofas to face one another. This will keep feelings more convivial and prevent everyone from being “at odds” with each other, the way L-shaped seating so often does. It will also keep everyone in the living room and out of the kitchen where you’re trying to work culinary magic! More holiday Do’s and Don’ts DO display your china and crystal. The dining room is a place of wealth, and for that reason, it is always auspicious to display your family crystal, china, or silver. Consider adding mirrors to the back of a china cabinet to “double” the amount of crystal and china you have. DO have bright, beautiful lighting. A beautiful chandelier is a wonderful addition to the dining room. If yours isn’t bright enough or attractive to you, replace it with another fixture. Good lighting is very lucky. DO hang mirrors here. Mirrors are stimulating and they double the good times by doubling the food and company in the room. DON’T have clocks in the dining room. Clocks in the dining

room bring bad energy; actually, they symbolize death. Remember, the passage of time is not important while you are enjoying a meal and the company of those closest to you. Take clocks out of the dining room. DON’T eat with the dead. So many people have pictures of deceased relatives in the dining room. Avoid doing this because it creates an extremely yin dining experience — and that can create health problems. DON’T eat with animals. It is better not to have animals in the dining room, real or otherwise. If you have pictures of birds or statues of animals, or even your dog, take them out of there. Animals symbolically eat your food. Better to put them in another location. DON’T use paper plates. Even if you have a big crowd, DO use real plates, china, and crystal. This is a time to celebrate abundance and material wealth and paper plates are poor symbols on such an auspicious holiday! FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My question is about aroma diffusers in the bedroom. Obviously, nice aromas are good feng shui, but do aroma diffusers represent the water element since it basically shoots out water vapour? I love my diffuser and it helps me breathe easier, but I don’t want bad feng shui while I sleep. Answer: At first this seemed like a simple question but it is

truly a bit more complicated. In feng shui we’re always looking at balance. Some say “no water in the bedroom” but then some feng shui experts will question your glass of water by the bedside as being water. Technically it is but it’s a small amount. Again, we’re back to the balance part. A glass of water, a water fountain, or listening to a pool outside your window run all night is very different. The glass of water is so small to be significant. The pool? It’s “big water” so it can represent a bigger problem. Which brings us back to your diffuser; my answer is that it depends. Is it a small object or large? If it’s small like a glass of water, then, that doesn’t concern me as much, though having it steam away all night doesn’t seem like a good idea to me. Do you hear water bubbling in it? If no, then it’s not such a problem. If yes, then, yes, that’s a concern. Do you see where I’m heading with this? My other question would be about

turning it off while you sleep. Can you do that? I know some of you reading this will wonder about vaporizers. If you listen to these gurgling away all night every night, it’s not a good idea. If it’s just a short-term use while you have a chest cold, that’s OK. But listening to water in any way while you sleep over the long term is never a good idea – no matter whether it’s a diffuser, vaporizer, dripping faucet, or swimming pool. Are you going to have a Christmas hangover this year? by Tim St Vincent What is a Christmas hangover you ask? Well, let’s start with what causes a Christmas hangover. Just like any other hangover, a Christmas hangover starts with excess consumption. In this case, instead of excessive alcohol consumption, a Christmas hangover starts with the excessive consumption of credit! Similar to how a regular hangover can leave you with a dull throbbing headache, a Christmas hangover can do the same thing. When that first credit card statement arrives in January showing how much you really spent for the holiday season, the dull ache starts behind your eyes and the beginnings of the Christmas hangover announces its presence! How did you get here you ask yourself. How did you let things get so out of hand? The answer is fairly easy. Not only did you forget to budget (or to stick to it), you also made the mistake many

of us make; we think of credit as money. It isn’t. Credit is potential debt just waiting to become real debt. The very second we use credit it becomes debt. Too many of us think of credit as an extension of our income. Again, it isn’t. Credit is credit, and with the flick of a wrist it is easily transformed into debt. Have no fear though, unlike a regular hangover, I have a 100 per cent foolproof Christmas hangover cure! When it comes to the holiday season and our gift giving habits, many of us think “No problem, I will just pay it off later.” Great, that is perfect. It is perfectly fine to use credit, so long as we have a plan to pay it off over a short period of time – ideally in full when the statement arrives. A statement like, “I will pay it off later,” isn’t a plan; unless you count it as a plan to lead you into debt. You need a budget. Given our topic, specifically, you need a Christmas budget – and that is the

core of my Christmas hangover cure! You need to set reasonable expectations with friends and family. A time comes when you simply can’t afford to buy gifts for everyone. Ddon’t worry. When you make that announcement, people won’t look down at you or think less of you. They will be relieved. They are going through the same financial stresses as you! Remember, not even Santa gives gifts to everyone! Just like Santa, make a list and figure out the cutoff point. You don’t have to have a “naughty & nice” list like Saint Nick, but you may want to have a cut-off point; usually an age. Anyone over a certain age doesn’t automatically get a gift. This lets you focus your spending dollars on the younger children. Maybe everyone over a certain age, say 18, goes into a Secret Santa pool, or you find some other way to share the spirit of the season with them. Once you have narrowed down your list of gift recipients, you need to figure out how much you can afford to spend. Notice, I said, “afford to spend”

and not just “spend.” Afford is an important word and one we sometimes forget about during the holiday season. It is just as important now as at any other time of the year – maybe even more so. So once you have that magical number figured out, you next have to figure out how to save for it. That is the easy part. You have just created a goal – to save money for Christmas. Goals usually cost two things, money and time. You just figured out the money cost of your goal – the amount you can afford to spend for Christmas. What is the time cost of the goal? Well, one year because we are going to save over the course of the year to get ready for Christmas. I want you to think of the time part of your goal in terms of paydays. How many paydays do you have in a year? If you get paid every two weeks, the answer is 26. Divide the number of paydays for your goal into the dollar cost of your goal. This will tell you how to much to put aside every payday so that you can save enough for your Christmas expenses. Then open up a separate bank account

and every payday automatically transfer your funds into this account. Keep doing this and voila! You will have enough money to pay for your Christmas gifts! Feel free to use your card (stay on budget!) because now you will have enough money to pay the bill in full when it arrives! “This is so easy,” you think. You have just one question: “Why didn’t I get started on this last year?” Good question, I say, very good question. My Christmas hangover cure is best taken as early in the year as possible, you want to give yourself as much time as possible to create your plan and to commit to it. Good luck and best wishes. Do your best to avoid a Christmas hangover this, and every year. Intimate gifts for the holidays Ate Anna: This holiday season is special to my husband and me, as it is also our 25th anniversary! Our youngest child has moved to go to university, so the house is quieter and we have a lot more privacy. This feels like a good time for a fresh start, and I would like to get my husband a gift this holiday season to spark our relationship. Do you have any recommendations? How do I give it to him without being shy? A Reader Dear reader: Happy holidays! In many families, it is traditional to give gifts to loved ones during this holiday season. It is wonderful that you are excited about having more time and privacy to enjoy your relationship with your husband. One option to spark up your relationship is to give your husband a romantic gift. You can take him out for dinner, or even a trip to the spa together. Some one-on-one time with just the two of you may be just the thing you need. One cute thing some people do is give their partner handmade relationship coupons. You can make these yourself, and can write whatever you want in them. Maybe you can give him a coupon for a back massage, a nice intimate activity you can do together to become closer. You could also write him a coupon for a date out, or for a bath together, or for anything you would like to do! Some couples like to purchase supplies for each other to spark up their physical relationship. Many like buying lingerie – nice looking underwear – for themselves and their partners. There are other supplies you can buy which you can use together during intimate times. For example, flavoured lubricants can add another nice dimension to intimate times. Some couples also like to use vibrators

or other toys together. If you are embarrassed to purchase these in a store, there are many online businesses across Canada that can ship in plain packaging. Birth control supplies like condoms are important to use if you do not want to get pregnant! Condoms can be purchased at a pharmacy, or online. Other birth control options are also available from your health care practitioner. Sometimes we can feel shy when talking about sex with our partners, or when giving them intimate gifts like these. My advice would be, although you may feel shy or nervous, to take the risk

and do it! It is possible he wants to talk about and explore these things also, and also feels shy. Sex and bodies are normal things, and the more we talk about them together the easier it gets. Happy holidays! I hope you and your husband are able to take this time to get closer together. Ate Anna welcomes your questions and comments. As of Pilipino Express press time, Filipinos around the world are breathlessly following the various social media feeds about Binibining Pilipinas Catriona Gray; the Philippines’ Miss Universe bet in the international beauty pageant is trending worldwide. As pageant favourite with millions of followers on line, anything she does turns viral. Even Gray was surprised by the impact of her now famous “slowmo twirl,” which she did on the Miss Universe stage during the preliminary competition on Thursday, December 13. The 24-year-old beauty queen said that while the pivot was practiced and intentional, she did not expect that it’s effect would have such an impact as to go viral. The national costume that she wore at the National Costume Show of the 67th Miss Universe beauty pageant, held on December 10 in Nong Nooch Tropical Garden in Pattaya, Thailand, was so outstandingly creative that Vogue Thailand featured it alongside select others. The costume was a bodysuit beaded with intricate patterns inspired by the Pintados from Visayas, while her T’boli brass headpiece, belt and cuffs are all from Mindanao. Customized footwear embroidered with indigenous textile patterns and an oversized painted parol Christmas lantern pulled by a roller device complete the look. Called “Celebrate, Fight, Enrich,” the “Luzviminda” or Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao-inspired costume represents the country’s diversity and three major islands. Catriona Elisa Magnayon Gray, was born on January 6, 1994 in Cairns, Australia to a Scottish-born Australian father, Ian Gray, from Fraserburgh, and a Filipino mother, Normita Ragas Magnayon, from Oas, Albay. Gray was a former student of Trinity Anglican School in Cairns and later earned her Certificate in Music Theory from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. She also acquired a Certificate in Outdoor Recreation and a black belt in Choi Kwang-Do martial arts. Additionally, Gray was the lead singer of her school’s jazz band, and she also starred in local productions of Miss Saigon. After finishing high school in Australia, she then moved to Manila where she worked as a commercial model. Before she joined and won Binibining Pilipinas 2018, she had already competed in Miss World 2016 and finished in the Top 5. In Philippine pageant history, Gray is the first Filipino to represent the Philippines in both the Miss World and Miss Universe competitions. As such, she is the second Filipino to represent the Philippines in two major international pageants, the first being Carlene Aguilar (Miss Earth in 2001 and Miss World in 2005). More than 90 contestants from different countries and continents are competing. Gray vies to become the fourth Filipino to get the Miss Universe crown on December 17 at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. CAPTIONS FOR PHOTOS 3 AND 4: LUZVIMINDA. “Magdiwang. Lumaban. Pagyamanin.” LUZON. “Magdiwang” [Celebrate]: The island group of Luzon is represented by the world-renowned “Parol/Christmas Lantern” from the province of Pampanga with an aluminum border (designed and made in Floridablanca, Pampanga – home of the pinukpuk aluminum). The border’s design is inspired by designs from the Philippine Baroque Churches that were declared as UNESCO Heritage Sites. VISAYAS. “Lumaban” [Fight]: The island of Visayas is represented by a body suit with “tattoo designs” embellished with crystals derived from patterns used by the indigenous people found in various parts of the Philippines. The tattoo patterns are authentic and based on images in the Boxer Codex of manuscripts written in 1590. The tattoos represent an individual’s journey and a public testimony recounting acts of combat, bravery, and strength, that perfectly reperesents the courageous and resilient Filipino spirit amidst the trials we face in this day and age. MINDANAO. “Pagyamanin” [Enrich]: The island group of Minadanao is represented by an authentic headpiece and brass accessories from the province of South Cotabato and customized knee-high boots with embroidered designs inspired by different indigenous textile patterns from the Philippines, namely: Inaul, Yakan, Maranao, B’laan, Bagoo, Tausug and T’nalak. The woven textiles express a strong belief in “ancestral and natural spirits” and “cultural roots” of indigenous communities that remain well preserved up to this day. (See photo #3 on page 17) On the back of the Parol is a painting with an inscription of the lyrics from Lupang Hinirang, the Philippines’ national anthem written in baybayin (the pre-colonial Filipino alphabet) that literally translates as: Lupang Hinirang, Duyan ka ng magiting, Sa manlulupig, di ka pasisiil. Sa dagat at bundok, sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw.” The Painting also highlights victories, festivals, events, heroes and national icons with a style inspired by the works of Philippine National Artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco, a native of the Art Capital of the Philippines, Angono, Rizal in Luzon.

Hindi See CRISTY p19

CRISTY...

Nasaan na ngayon ang katuparan ng doktrinang separation of Church and State?

To cut the story short, nagkaroon siya ng pagkakataon na pamunuan ang buong Pilipinas after the first EDSA People Power Revolution.

Sulyap sa lumang panahon Eleven years old ako nang sumiklab ang World War II sa Pilipinas noong December 8, 77 years ago. May puhunan siyang pangalan, may mukha, may talento.

– CSF
