It all started with an online discussion on some of the difficulties surrounding the Philippine passport.

Newly appointed Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro “Teddyboy” Locsin Jr. had questioned the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA)’s practice of requiring Filipinos to present their birth certificates in the process of renewing their passports. It’s unnecessary, he said, since the old passport is proof enough that someone is who s/he says s/he is.

He then vowed that if his people at the DFA cannot explain in plain language why such a requirement is being imposed, he would do away with it altogether.

As it turned out, the problem was worse than just having to present birth certificates. Filipinos applying for renewal of passports have to get their biometrics taken again because… well, let’s have Locsin explain it himself. This is what he said in a tweet on January 8: “Because the old contractor for passports took away all our data so it is like starting all over again.” He added that the DFA “did nothing about it or couldn’t because we were in the wrong.”

That tweet immediately went viral and was picked up by the media. Critics of the Duterte administration used

it as “proof” of incompetence and even corruption within its ranks. Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros immediately jumped in, issuing a media statement on January 12 saying the data loss “indicates a serious national security risk, and is evidence of the Duterte government’s gross incompetence in protecting the people’s private data.”

She added: “Exactly what data were lost? When, how, and under whose watch did this happen?

Where did the breakdown occur?

Who exactly is the responsible firm? And why aren’t they being sued for running away with such vital information?”

That proved to be her undoing, as Locsin tweeted his reply the following morning: “It occurred in the watch of your people and the one before.”

Not exactly the answer Hontiveros was expecting, and it turned the tables on her and her colleagues in the opposition who held the reins of government before the Duterte administration took over in 2016.

Locsin elaborated in a later tweet that the problem “started under GMA’s DFA and got worse under PNoy’s DFA,” referring to former Presidents Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Benigno Aquino III. He didn’t elaborate, but I dug up an old video I had

The Philippine passport mess: Whose fault? taken on January 12, 2018 – basically exactly a year ago – of then-Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano explaining that the loss of data happened before the Duterte administration came in.

In the video, taken during the launch of the 10-year validity of the Philippine passport at the DFA’s Office of Consular Affairs in Manila, Cayetano said the passport supplier during the Aquino administration had lost the data or it got corrupted while in its possession.

“Yung dating supplier ng passport, yung dating nagpiprint ng passport, ang sinabi nawala na o corrupted na yung data. When we got here and until now, lahat ng nagrerenew simula 2016… everyone renewing since 2016 has to have a new biometrics,” he said.

(The previous supplier of the passports, the one that used to print it, they said the data got lost or got corrupted. When we got here and until now, everyone renewing from 2016 has to have their biometrics taken again.)

Cayetano added that government at that point was already taking steps to solve the problem. “One time lang po namin kukunin yun unless may problema. We made sure din that the data is safe and private

We also made sure the data are safe and private and that there is redundancy. The owner of the data is no longer the contractor or the company that prints the passport but the government.)

Locsin himself also vowed to solve the problem and to run after those who had allowed it to go unchecked. “IT WILL BE SOLVED BY PRRD’s DFA Under Locsin. The yellow crowd who perpetrated the passport fraud are in a panic because we are gonna autopsy their crooked deal. Period,” he tweeted. Let’s hope those who are responsible are made to pay for their mistake – one that has caused misery to thousands of Philippine passport holders.

An affair with money:

It doesn’t have to feel so dirty

Hi! I will be away for a bit in January, so I asked my peer, Manraj, our Financial Educator in Edmonton if she could fill in for me this month and prepare the January article. She did a great job and below is her article, “An Affair With Money.” A great read!

We have all been there; we’ve made financial mistakes.

For some of us they were grave and happened almost in an instant. For others, it was more of a culmination of too much stress eating and shopping that has left a vast dent in what was once our savings. Maybe we just never knew what we were doing until that feeling in our gut told us that something was not right with how we are living. The truth of the matter is that whatever the state of our finances, it is not permanent and we can change to see budgets and money in a more positive light.

Now we’re going to take a step back from the numbers for a moment and dive into the

ugly truth. It’s the voices in our head that say, because we made these mistakes we’re not good enough – the terrifying demons that we have that chip away at our self-worth and confidence.

In our heads we get angry with ourselves for not being better with money and we scold ourselves as if we were children.

Can we really shame ourselves into being better?

There’s a psychological term known as the self-fulfilling prophecy, which means “our personal beliefs and expectations will influence our behaviour.”

For instance, let’s take Sally, she impulse buys when she is feeling upset. The voices in her head often keep repeating, “I’m so bad with money, I can’t ever save, I’m so terrible with money.” She even affirms this to friends and family.

You see there’s a disconnect between what she wants – to be financially in control – and her words and thoughts. Ultimately, her deep-set beliefs about money

are resulting in her having a negative financial relationship with herself.

Instead of shaming ourselves we can ask, “How would a financially empowered person think and act?” It’s important to recognize that it takes time to change those negative voices in our heads. We can correct ourselves when we catch ourselves in the midst of those negative thoughts, and be patient and compassionate. It will take time and patience but those negative thoughts in our heads will eventually take more of a backseat.

It’s crucial that we celebrate our small wins and reinforce any positive financial behaviour.

This can be as simple as writing it down in a notebook and telling ourselves, “Good job.” Small habits like skipping an impulse buy, deciding to eat in and save, or putting even $50 into savings, are all positive behaviours we can keep track of. So if on a particular day, those negative

voices in our head are telling us that we aren’t doing well, we can look back on our past successes and keep ourselves from getting discouraged. We are not going to be perfect at being compassionate with ourselves every single day.

That’s okay, because that’s what it is to be human. What we can do is be kinder to ourselves and conscious of the words we use, give ourselves a pat on the back, and strive to be a little bit better each day.

The anticipation around the reopening of the parents and grandparents sponsorship has gripped the community. Many people have become frequent viewers of the federal website, hoping for information about the reopening. Yes, we have known for a number of months that the lottery system of selection was coming to an end but the announcement about when the program would reopen for 2019 has been long delayed.

In years past we waited patiently for the beginning of December but there was no announcement in 2018. As a practitioner we have a number of families who have hired us to represent their sponsorship and now, two weeks into 2019, the date has been released.

CIC News published information several weeks back but at that point the date was not released. We knew only that IRCC would accept up to 20,000 applications through the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program for 2019 and that the lottery selection was ending. The early January information was incomplete. IRCC only informed us that the sponsorship would be opening “in the upcoming weeks.”

Otherwise we knew that the

program expects to process 20,000 applications through the PGP, which allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents over the age of 18 to sponsor their parents and/or grandparents for Canadian permanent residence.

The first January press release was fortunately followed up by one on January 11th and now we have more details about the opening day and time for the Sponsorship of Parents and Grandparents. The grand reveal for the 2019 PGP is now set at noon EST on January 28, 2019. The departmental statement says that this system will be fairer and easier to access.

IRCC will continue to accept EOI online submissions from this time until the 2019 cap of 20,000 applications is met. Interested potential sponsors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new intake process for 2019, as changes have been made. These include a requirement for potential sponsors to upload a copy of their status in Canada document when submitting their interest to sponsor form. This form has been changed from previous years to include features that will assist IRCC in detecting duplicate submissions and potential fraud.

Parent and grandparent sponsorship announced for 2019 The IRCC warns potential sponsors to ensure that they are eligible before submitting the EOI. The sponsorship program continues to be a popular option for Canadian immigration, so eligible interested sponsors should prepare for the opening of the program. The Minister of Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen states, as part of the government release: “Family reunification is an immigration priority for the Government of Canada. It supports Canada’s economic prosperity and it further strengthens our communities.

Parents and grandparents often help care for children, increasing their parents’ ability to work and study, and to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

In reuniting Canadian citizens and permanent residents with their parents and grandparents, not only do we help these families to succeed – doing so also benefits our entire country.”

The first-come, first-served approach differs from the lottery system in two years past. The EOI approach is becoming commonplace for immigration

My indentity clashed Adrian Pizarro was awarded the 2018 ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence – Honourable Mention last June based on his high school GPA, a group interview, and an essay in response to the question, “How do values and cultural stereotypes affect your Filipino identity in Canada?” The following essay was his submission.

Ever since I moved to Canada, I tried to establish my Filipino identity. Since I am here, the most current connection I have to the Philippines is through the Internet. Reading all the articles about the blatant homophobia and excessive violence there made me realize how hard it was to maintain my identity here. What they do represents mainstream Filipino identity, and if I want to keep up with it, I have to adjust and follow them. This presents a problem, as Canada is very liberal in comparison to the Philippines, so my identity clashed. It is hard to balance out my identity, as a lot of the time I face two opposing values.

I read about the 14 Good Filipino Habits that Make the

Philippines a Great Country (Abrugar), and already it did not match with Manny Pacquio’s homophobic remark (Murphy).

That, or perhaps the articles themselves are conflicting.

Filipinos are supposed to be polite and be discrete (Abrugar).

Here, Pacquiao compares gay people to animals on national television. He defends himself by saying it is “what the Bible says” (Murphy), so it is actually in tune with how Filipinos are supposed to be faithful (Abrugar). This confuses me, as I am not sure if politeness should trump faithfulness and honesty, or the other way around. These values go against each other, and I have to cherry pick the good of both values. If I do pick both however, I will be using these values to mask the fact that they are both hypocritical to each other.

Meanwhile, Canadian influences go against what Pacquiao said. Gay people are protected in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I have to pick a side, and it is confusing. This goes beyond him.

Next up, I read President

Rodrigo Duterte’s profile, and honestly, I do not want to accept him as the representative of Filipinos. The fact that he had won the office of the president made me realize what the Filipino identity is made of. I understand that the state of the Philippines is not as good as Filipinos want it to be, so their desperation elected Duterte. Once he was elected, “[his drug] campaign has worked in reducing overall crime, … although homicides and murders have gone up.” This implies that a lot of deaths are swept under the rug, proving Duterte’s tackling of corruption fruitless.

And yet, he still has “a historic 91 per cent approval rating.”

Not believing in him affects my Filipino identity as he symbolizes what a Filipino leader should be. (“Profile: Duterte”) All the while Canada encourages minorities to embrace and share their native identities, especially Filipinos; it is so jarring as Canadian and Filipino cultures are not always on the same side. While I know that not all Filipinos are both similar to Manny Pacquiao and Rodrigo Duterte, the reality that they are both in high positions imply that they represent Filipino beliefs. All that I can do is to take the best of both Canadian and Filipino culture, and incorporate them within myself.

U.N.’s Global Compact for Migration

Defining our common humanity The Canadian Press and the CTV News brought to public attention on December 4, 2018 that “Trudeau and Scheer clash over Canada signing UN compact on migrants.” Even before the signature of the Government of Canada under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was affixed to the agreement, the Tory leader took the contrary position and vowed: “A Conservative government under Andrew Scheer’s leadership would immediately withdraw Canada from this Global Compact on Migration (GCM).”

Most certainly this would be one important campaign issue during the forthcoming Canadian federal election that is barely 10 months away. The Canada Elections Act anticipates the election will take place on or before October 21, 2019; the exact date becomes known when the writs of election are formally issued.

To inform myself on this issue, I read the full GCM document. I noted the reported opinions of experts on the subject and examined the reasons given by countries opposed to the agreement. Also, I took into account their publicly known views on immigration

as a national policy for their respective countries. As an added value, I canvassed for media’s fact-checking report.

Immigration as instrument of wisdom and compassion This commentary reflects my analysis and conclusion: I am proud and grateful as an immigrant-citizen that Canada is one of the signatories to the United Nations-sponsored GCM – an international agreement that defines our common global humanity. Indeed, I see in the signatories their resolute acceptance of immigration as a nation’s instrument of wisdom and compassion.

I humbly share with our readers my commentary in the hope it would help them ascertain the merits of contrasting positions and claims on this issue when it is debated during the election campaign and, thereby, help all of us make an evidence-based decision come voting time. I have quoted freely from my references for greater emphasis, validation, and abundance of clarity.

What is the GCM? GCM – the acronym for Global Compact for Migration, the short version for Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and

Regular Migration – is “the first inter-governmentally negotiated agreement, prepared under the auspices of the United Nations and aimed at improving co-operation between countries.” It was adopted in Marrakech, Morocco on December 10, 2018. “A total of 164 countries among the 193 UN members (84.97%) approved the agreement by acclamation.”

Citizenship and Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen signed on behalf of Canada.

I emphasize the word “negotiated” for it implies collective sharing of resources on the part of signatories (1) to acknowledge the magnitude of the global challenge posed by worldwide migration, (2) to search for the most practical and humane solutions, and (3) to apply them with decency and civility.

Magnitude of worldwide migration The worldwide population of migrants comes to 258 million, of whom 36 million (close to 15%) are children. They include, as defined by the U.N. International Organization for Migration, “any person who is moving or has moved across an international border or within a state away

from his/her habitual place of residence, regardless of (i) the person’s legal status; (ii) whether the movement is voluntary or involuntary; (iii) what the causes for the movement are; or (iv) what the length of the stay is.”

This magnitude of migrants comes to just about seven times the 37-million population of Canada – a truly tall challenge to our common humanity.

U.N. and Canadian laudatory roles That is why I would like to underscore the vital role of the United Nations – always a beacon of peace and humanitarian leadership. As Canadians we can take pride that Canadians’ sense of justice and humanitarian duty was on full display once more when we become fully aware that “the GCM is the result of two years of hard negotiations led by Louise Arbour,” a former Justice of the Canadian Supreme Court and U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.

It is truly sad to hear arguments from non-signatory country and political leaders that condescendingly alludes to the U.N. as simply a non-elected body, as if an elected office confers an unfettered license to claim superiority in wise counsel and decision-making.

Anti-immigration bias of non-signatory countries It is even more painfully sad to learn that the incumbent President of the most powerful democratic and freedom-loving nation in the world had also refused, together with a few other countries, to add their signatures. I have discerned that most of these non-signatory countries, with the USA foremost, share equivalent bias against immigration, particularly from certain countries. Their antiimmigrant bias would naturally make immigrants and descendants of immigrants feel less than co-equal in worth with all their fellow citizens, independent of country of birth, professed religious faith, inborn colour of skin, and different accents when they speak.

Press freedom and national sovereignty It is my hope that the current opposition of the Canadian Tory leadership to the GCM does not, wittingly or unwittingly, reflect the same anti-immigrant bias. In fairness, however, to his policy stand, I concur that the need to ensure press freedom, freedom of expression, supremacy of national sovereignty, and Canada’s ability to set its own immigration policy are important imperatives. But

none of these imperatives is extinguished or threatened by the GCM. Careful reading of the document and its objectives, with full regard to the whole document for context and language, should re-assure him that his concerns have been answered as experts on this subject have confirmed in media quotes alluded to them (Craig Damian Smith, an associate director of the Global Migration Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto, Christina ClarkKazak, an associate professor of public and international affairs at the University of Ottawa, and Christopher Waddell, a professor at Carleton University’s journalism school).

Moreover, the Canadian Press’ “Baloney Meter” – “a project that examines the level of accuracy in statements made by politicians” – gave “Andrew Scheer’s comments on UN Migration Compact’s Effects on Media” a rating of “A Lot of Baloney,” that is, “the statement is mostly inaccurate but contains elements of truth.” Also, former Tory Immigration Minister Chris Alexander is quoted saying, “Andrew Scheer is ‘factually incorrect’ about the UN’s global compact.”

Adopt and embrace In light of the foregoing observations, may the Tory leader be bold to throw his support behind the Global Compact. Together, let us embrace this UN Global Compact – even if, admittedly, it is without the force and strength an international treaty brings – for the sake of safe, orderly and regular migration. Let us adopt the optimism of Louise Arbour who oversaw the finalization of this international agreement and “regard the Global Compact as a chance to shift world opinion on the need to address future migration.” In so doing, we help foster national unity and affirm our common global humanity.

In fact, we argue a lot and sometimes it is about silly things.

I am tired of the arguments. What can we do?

Benny Dear Benny, Disagreements are a normal part of any relationship and married couples fight about many things. Some of the most common issues are money, sex, housework, children, jobs, annoying habits, communication, time spent watching TV or on the computer, leisure activities, the in-laws etc.

Because you and your wife are two unique individuals, it’s natural for you to have different ideas about these kinds of issues.

It’s important for both of you to accept and respect these different ways of looking at the world.

As well, if you keep your minds open to listening to each other, a disagreement does not always have to be a bad thing.

In fact, some couples say that it’s possible for an argument to make them feel closer to each other. An argument is an opportunity to share feelings and thoughts, but it needs to be done in a respectful way. If a couple is able to reach a compromise, the process helps both partners understand each other better. This is how intimacy between two people reaches a deeper level. As well, the “making up” after a fight (whether it is physical intimacy or other ways of making up)

sometimes helps the couple feel better about themselves and their relationship.

Also, remember that it is not the argument, itself, that causes problems; it is how a couple argues. When you fight, fight fair.

It’s important to stay focused and stick to the issue at hand. Don’t bring up old hurts or grudges when they’re not relevant to the issue you are arguing about. Don’t attack your spouse’s character or personality. In other words: no name-calling, criticizing, or judging. Also remember that you are not a mind reader; so don’t make assumptions about what your partner is thinking.

Listening and communicating are important; clarify what you think your wife is saying. And give her the opportunity to correct that impression if you misunderstood.

If the argument is getting too heated, take a “time out” to calm down and cool off.

Benny, in your letter you mention that you argue a lot with your wife. Even though you have the right to disagree with your wife, it doesn’t always have to cause an argument. This can create an unhealthy pattern that can be hurtful and damaging to your relationship. It might be helpful to reflect on why you fight: Do you fight because you want to win or be in control? Or is it to actually resolve issues?

Remember, your relationship

with your wife is a partnership, not a competition. Most of the time the important thing is not who wins or loses, or who’s right or wrong. The more important thing is to work toward a solution. In other words, don’t fight to win, fight for your marriage relationship.

As well, try to work toward being the first person to apologize.

It actually shows that you care more about reconciling than being right. And remind yourself that your wife also cares about reconciling. If both of you didn’t care about a resolution, you wouldn’t be fighting for one.

Making changes in a relationship can be challenging.

Nang or ng? – the long and the short of it There are two little words in the Filipino language that cause more than their fair share of headaches for writers and editors who strive to be faithful to the balarila, the official grammar of the national language. The words nang and ng are actually the same single word but with many meanings – the short ng is just an abbreviation of the longer nang. This prompts the questions, “What’s the difference?” and, “which one is correct for a given situation?”

The reason there are two spellings for this word was probably a matter of convenience in the beginning. The word nang/ ng has so many uses in the Filipino language that it naturally occurs with great frequency in writing.

Using an abbreviation saves time and ink.

In the days of the old baybayin writing system, 500 years ago, nang was written with just one character n because the baybayin was incapable of showing the whole word nang. Writing just one character for this word was not a great burden back then, however, this character was the

letter na, which just happens to be another very common Filipino word. So although it was easy for the writers, we can imagine the confusion among readers who tried to figure out which of the multitude of possible meanings the writer had intended to say.

During the Spanish era, the Western alphabet replaced the baybayin script. Originally nang was always spelled in full – as can be seen in the first book ever printed in the Philippines, the Doctrina Christiana of 1593.

Later, various abbreviations arose for this ubiquitous word. Most of the abbreviations used the Spanish tilde ~ mark to signify the Filipino ng sound and to distinguish it from the sounds of either n or g alone. By the end of the 1800s, it was common to abbreviate nang as ñg or ng˜ with a tilde over the g – or with a single large tilde ~ above the pair of letters.

With the revolution against Spain, there was a revolution in Tagalog spelling as well. The national hero, himself, Dr. Jose Rizal laid out new ideas in his Studies on the Tagalog Language (1893) to simplify the often-

awkward Spanish conventions used to spell Tagalog words at the time.

Rizal and other reformers added some useful foreign letters to the alphabet such as k and w, and he advocated the use of the letter g˜, alone with a tilde above it, to represent the sound of ng.

He proposed that the long nang should be spelled, nag˜ and the short ng˜ as it is, but both would have a tilde over the g˜.

The general public accepted most of these ideas immediately but the long nag˜ was not one of them. The various versions of the short ng, however, persisted well into the 1900s.

In 1940, Lope K. Santos wrote the Balarila, the standard grammar for the national language. In it, he standardized the rules for using the short ng (without a tilde) and the long nang, so that writers could convey their ideas more precisely. But to this day most people are still confused about which one to use.

Which one is correct?

For many Filipino students, grammar class is a nightmare and it doesn’t help that even the teachers are often confused by this little word. Rules for using

it are needlessly complicated and can fill pages in a textbook.

It is no wonder that the rules are applied inconsistently throughout written media; from social media to respected newspapers – even from page to page within a single publication.

But there is a relatively easy way to remember the correct usage of nang/ng without invoking the dreaded B-word (Balarila).

Just keep in mind that there are only five situations where you should write the long nang, and for everything else, just write the short ng.

The author, poet, critic and national artist, Virgilio Almario boiled all the rules down to these five cases in one of his articles on language in a 1992 edition of Diyaryo Filipino.

Use the long nang in the following situations: 1. When nang means the same thing as noong – Umaga nang barilin si Rizal.

Nang umagang iyon ay nagkasakit si Pedro.

2. When nang means the same thing as upang and para – Sa mga Espanyol, dapat barilin si Rizal nang matakot ang mga Filipino.

Dapat dalhin si Pedro sa ospital nang magamot.

3. When na and ng are combined – Sa mga Filipino, sobra nang lupit ng mga Espanyol.

Sobra nang hirap ang inabot ni Pedro.

4. When nang describes how something is done or to what extent – Binaril si Rizal nang patalikod.

Namayat nang todo si Pedro dahil sa sakit.

5. When nang is a ligature that joins a repeated word – Barilin man nang barilin si Rizal ay hindi siya mamamatay.

Ginamot nang ginamot si Pedro para gumaling.

That’s all there is to it.

Grammarians may spend an eternity splitting hairs about the application of the long nang and short ng, but the rest of us don’t need to know about all that. As long as we remember these five special cases for the long nang, we can write the short ng for everything else and forget the rest of the rules.

Celebrating the Chinese New Year So disgusted was a friend over the merrymaking last New Year’s day that she vowed to immigrate to a country where watusi did not mean firecrackers but an African tribe. She longed for a land where TNT is known not for explosions but as the product that funds the Nobel Prize. It has been a few weeks since we greeted the New Year with noise and black lungs, yet my friend is still in Manila.

If she insists on breaking another resolution, she will have another chance to do so when we celebrate Chinese New Year this year.

Frankly, the fireworks we have today pale in comparison with the ones described centuries ago by Spaniards and other Europeans in Manila. Made by the sangleyes (from the Chinese seng-li, meaning “to trade” or “travelling merchant”), these fireworks were so impressive they were believed to be near supernatural. Take the following description in 1790: A lion spitting fire was followed by an enormous serpent, more than fifty cubits long, which made extraordinary movements and contortions on account of swallowing a globe of fire, which floated before it through the air; and behind the serpent came another lion, no less fierce

than the first. This spectacle was made even more terrible by the confused din of the gongs, which the Chinese beat without ceasing. The lions fought each other, with the greatest ardour and pertinacity; and the serpent performed many pleasing movements and evolutions, causing admiration of the skill with which so huge a mass moved about so swiftly. Finally, the two lions began to swell and brought about an abundance of fireworks; and it would be unjust to the Chinese if I did not state here that this display, though of short duration, was very handsomely designed. One of the lions being now set on fire, it began to run around through the plaza, with an incredible velocity, which spectacle brought pleasure to those present.

Despite its resemblance to the dragon dance performed in Binondo, the subject of the account is not the Chinese New Year. Such marvellous show of Chinese pyrotechnics was only one of the events in the two-week fiesta that marked the accession to the throne of Carlos IV. Reading the above account makes me wonder why today’s fireworks are not visually elaborate anymore.

Our fireworks seem to have deteriorated into mere noise-andsmoke makers. Maybe the long ban on fireworks had something to do with it.

Our National Archives has a bundle of crumbling documents marked Celebracion de fiestas of the Gremio de Sangleyes 1873-1889 that contain requests made for permits to celebrate the Chinese New Year. On February 6, 1882, for example, the Chinese gobernadorcillo sent a petition to the Corregidor of Manila stating that since the Chinese New Year would fall on the seventeenth of that month, they would therefore want to celebrate a ten-day fiesta, from the seventeenth to the twentyseventh. The request goes on to enumerate other petitions: Could they light their homes, both inside and outside, for the duration of the festival? Could they walk the streets freely and keep their stores open till midnight? Could they have music? Could they launch rockets, use bombs, reventadores and other firecrackers?

What amuses me is the fact that, with the possible exception of the Double Ten festival in October, the documents clearly illustrate the restrictions the Chinese had to bear for the rest of the year, namely: racial

segregation into ghettoes and restrictions on the movements through a curfew. It was funny that even the lighting of their homes was curtailed. On the whole, however, many of the Chinese requests were usually granted by the Spanish officials, except for the loosening of constraints on some types of fireworks.

Only rockets that gave out light, or luces, were allowed, and it was prohibited to use fireworks in public places. In 1880, a less lenient Spanish official banned fireworks for that year’s festival. If today we have many people injured by fireworks and inconsiderate firing of guns, just imagine the fires started by fireworks over a century ago when many houses were built of just wood and nipa.

Archival documents can show us the racial discrimination to

which the Chinese were subjected in the Spanish Philippines, and further research will unearth the abuse they had to endure. The Chinese are more affluent now, but unfortunately, the abuse continues – it has even developed into the new and despicable form of kidnapping for ransom.

Hoping that the fireworks and tikoy will bring in a better year, I say, Kung Hei Fat Choy!

The feng shui connection of heart and eyes There are many ways to go about manifesting your desires.

The first and most direct is to take action. Action is critical, but what about when you’re forming your idea? How do you manifest your heart’s desire faster and more easily – and most important – more exact to what you want?

You use feng shui.

Feng shui is more than moving chairs around and adding flowers to your dining room table. Feng shui can be applied to your car, your wardrobe, your jewellery choices, and yes, even toward the things you desire most. Yet, using it is very simple, but understanding how it works and why it works quickly is a definitively feng shui concept.

Chi, or energy, whether it is that of a room or your own personal chi, can all be changed.

1. Write it down – Putting your dearest wishes on paper amounts to creating a map for yourself. A desire that is not written down only lives in your head. Putting it on paper can instantly quadruple your likelihood of achieving it.

Making it visual is the next step to making it real.

2. Visual images imprint on the heart – We’ve all heard that a ‘picture is worth a thousand words’ and we know it to be true.

Our eyes take images straight to our heart. When you use an image for your desires or goals, you place that image on your heart –and the heart wants – and goes after – what the heart sees.

yes. In one study, people looking to lose weight who actively participated on a weight-loss support group Facebook page — posting and liking other posts — lost more weight than their peers who did not engage. Other studies have found similar results for smoking cessation.

1. Instagram — This photo-based social network can make daily chores such as tracking food intake easier and more fun.

In one study, participants reported that bragging about their healthy meal to friends, and getting virtual pats on the back in return, helped reinforce new dietary habits and ramp up motivation to do better. They also used the app to find new recipes and tips for achieving healthier lifestyles.

2. Twitter — Behold the power of the 280-character tweet. Studies show that turning to Twitter in search of support for healthy lifestyle changes, such as

coordination, and the importance of them working together.

That’s because this is the magic connection. When the hand writes, it makes an imprint on the brain. Then your eyes see it, and it makes an imprint on your heart.

When the heart (eye/emotion) and brain (hand/thought) are aligned, this is when magic really happens. This is why vision boards are so powerful and why anything you truly want needs words and images to help you manifest it.

4. Hand to heart to complete the circuit – Feeling your desires is also a critical piece of the manifestation puzzle. Look at your desires or goals that you have written on paper or have on your vision board. Hold your hand to your heart and observe your words and images, say the words, feel the words and feel the images. When you do this, you are in effect, doing energetically what engineers teach about electricity, and that is, you are completing the circuit.

For electricity to work, there must be a continuous loop, or flow, of energy. If there is a break along any of the circuit, energy does not flow to light a light bulb, for instance. This is also true for manifesting our desires. We must complete the circuit of eyes, heart and mind. This follows the concept of chi.

When there is an interruption or block of chi flow, like an oddly placed chair, walking into the room is interrupted and difficult. Chi works best like a smooth flowing river. Your manifesting chi works the same – it must be smooth, flowing and uninterrupted. Link your hand, heart and eyes together to keep a continuous loop of energy by

holding your hand over your heart when you look at your desires, wish list or vision board.

5. Experiential wishing – When we want something new, we often go shop for it. Think about going shopping for a new handbag, bicycle or shoes. You may go to a bike shop and test out the bike or try the shoes on, admiring how they look on you.

This is another way of linking your eyes and heart together for your dreams is to experience something. Is it a new car you want? Go test-drive it. Look at new apartments or visit open houses in a neighbourhood you like. Once you put the energy out there, the fire for that item begins burning and will help you achieve what you want faster.

6. Antithetical wishing – There are two types of wishes, the pleasure wish and the pain wish. What uncomfortable thing are you tolerating or avoiding?

Sometimes our goals are backwards. Rather than focusing on a pleasure, we should focus on our pains instead. Often simply getting rid of the pain and the difficulties in our lives helps us to achieve the pleasure we want. If you’ve had difficulty manifesting what you want, try focusing on what you need to rid yourself of.

Your heart will thank you.

FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I have four cats, so I have a lot of kitty litter to scoop and a lot of litter boxes. I keep one of the litter boxes in my office. I could keep it in my bedroom. I’m just concerned because I worry about whether it hurts my feng shui.

Answer: In simple terms, it’s never a good idea for a cat to do it’s business where you do yours. I don’t think this is a good arrangement in either your working or sleeping environment.

My suggestion? Put the litter boxes in the bathrooms, laundry rooms, or install a “cat door” from the house to the garage, where the litter pans can be scooped near the garbage. This would be a much better arrangement than having a cat toilet where you work or sleep.

Book launch: February 3 at McNally Robinson Bookstore A gemma is a bud of a flower that hasn’t blossomed yet. Its blossoming is awaited with anticipation by flower lovers for them to savour its fragrance and its beauty. It is coy and has not acquired its confidence to blossom without the help of the sunshine and other natural elements.

My name is Gemma, and I am finally ready to blossom after 77 years of questioning myself if I am enough. Being an illegitimate daughter of a Catholic priest, I was bullied, shunned, and abhorred by lots of people while growing up in a small town of Casiguran, Sorsogon, Philippines.

Consequently, this bullying has had a lasting impact on me as a child, student, and as an adult. On several occasions, I had to tell lies who my father was, sometimes saying he’s a doctor, a lawyer, accountant, or any occupation I could think of. I thought I was unlovable and unworthy of any one’s attention. I compensated for this lack of selfworth by making sure I was always the top student from Grade one till university. For therapeutic purposes, I wrote in my journals my pent-up feelings and emotions but never showed them to anybody. It was two years ago when my son, Hernando, a computer technician, discovered my collection and urged me to publish them. So with so much hesitation, I have ventured to publish my collection of

Parang naloka si Piolo sa tanong ni Songbird! Nabigla siya, aminado si Papa P na nanginig siya sa question sa kaniya ni Regine!

“Ito naman kasing si Regine, kung anu-ano ang itinatanong kay Papa P! Pero wala naman siyang malice sa tanong niya, e!

Gusto lang niyang malaman kung sesentrohan na ni Papa P this year ang lovelife niya!” tawa nang tawang pagpansin ni prop.

Tapos na raw iyon, madiing sabi ni Kris, pero kasabay ng desisyon niyang tapusin na ang nakaraan ay nandoon pa rin ang kaniyang papuri sa aktor-pulitiko na kahit minsan ay hindi nagbigay sa kaniya ng sama ng loob kahit sa text lang.

Iyon din daw ang pinakagustong pangyayari ni Bimby, nirespeto raw ng mayor ng Kyusi ang kaniyang mommy, kaya mananatili itong kaibigan ng kanilang pamilya.

Dapat lang namang kalimutan na ni Kris ang namagitan sa kanila ni Mayor Herbert, napakatagal na noon, marami nang naganap sa kani-kanilang buhay.

Kailangan nang tutukan ni Kris ang kaniyang kinabukasan.

May matinding laban siyang kinakaharap ngayon, ang kaniyang kalusugan, kailangan niyang bumalik uli sa Singapore para malaman ang kinalabasan ng mga tests na ginawa sa kaniya ilang
