Silent night I’ve always hated firecrackers. Growing up in Malabon, the New Year celebration always consisted of rebentador, bawang, kuwitis, and other firecrackers that were both too loud and too dangerous for me. My older brother and our cousins loved to light them up, but I always stayed away because I was afraid both of the sound and the possibility that the darned thing could blow up on me. It didn’t help that, even back then, the TV news programs always featured hands and other body parts that had been mangled by what I could only describe as mini explosives. That is why I’m happy to be living in Davao City where for the past 18 years it’s been “silent night” every New Year’s Eve. I remember covering the press conference then-Mayor Rodrigo Duterte had in which he made the announcement that he was banning firecrackers. It was a short time after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks in the US and he wanted to give terrorists no
The biometrics rule is now extended to Asia, Asia Pacific and the Americas. This means that, effective December 31, 2018, all applicants from the Philippines must now meet Canada’s mandatory fingerprint and photo requirements. This is the second phase of the biometrics rules starting back in July 2018. The submission of prints and photos is intended to speed up the identification of all persons who are applying for a Canadian visitor visa, work permit, study permit, permanent residence, including Express Entry and even for those seeking asylum in Canada. The requirement covers all applicants between the ages of 14 and 79, who must provide biometric information. There is no upper age restriction for asylum seekers. Travelers from
room to launch attacks on the city using the noise of firecrackers as cover. He also wanted to keep residents safe from harm since the injuries and even deaths due to firecrackers had become an integral part of the celebration. It’s something of a testament to Duterte’s political will that the ban was in effect for 11 years before it became a city ordinance. All it took was for him to order that stores intending to sell firecrackers not be issued business permits and that was that. No amount of persuasion would move him, not even from the Filipino-Chinese community for whom firecrackers were a cultural thing, especially during the Lunar New Year. The ban was in effect year-round, not just on New Year’s Eve. When the ordinance was enacted in 2012, it set the penalties for violations: a fine of P1,000 and/or imprisonment for 20 to 30 days for the first offense; a fine of P3,000 and/ or imprisonment of from one
visa-exempt countries, who are visiting Canada with a valid Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), will not be required to provide biometrics. Biometrics can be processed at an authorized VAC (Visa Application Centre) abroad. It only takes minutes to process and costs first-time applicants CAD $85.00, or CAD $170 for those applying as a family. If you or your relatives or friends want to contact either of the VACs in the Philippines, they are encouraged to telephone 632-528-2505 or e-mail: infor. canman@vfshelpline.com. to three months for the second offense; and a fine of P5,000 and/ or imprisonment of from three to six months for the third offense. But I don’t think Dabawenyos follow the ordinance out of fear of the penalties; I think we’ve grown to appreciate the fact that we all transition from one year to the next with our fingers intact. There were proposals early on from the tourism sector for the city to put up pyrotechnic shows so that at least the people would have something grand to celebrate, but Duterte thumbed down even that. With no recourse, residents simply decided to make a different kind of noise to welcome the new year: banging on pots and pans, blowing on makeshift trumpets (torotot in Filipino) and car horns, and even shouting at the top of their lungs. There were a few years that we even tried to go for a Guinness World Record of the most number of people blowing on trumpets together. Outsiders often laugh at us and think it’s pathetic that our New Year celebrations are reduced to pots and pans and torotot, but we see the positive side of it. For one thing, there
is no air pollution to ruin the traditional media noche. Also, the streets are always clean when we wake up the next morning. And then there’s the enhanced sense of community because neighbours go out of their way to greet each other when the clock strikes 12 midnight. But the biggest benefit is that for that past 18 years, there have been no firecrackerrelated injuries in Davao City. The hospitals are still placed on high alert (it’s a government requirement), but I cannot remember ever hearing of anyone having to be treated. It’s a record we are proud to keep. In contrast, the rest of the country still has to deal with injuries that seem to grow in number each year. So go ahead and laugh at us, but we Dabawenyos are proud of our silent nights every New Year. Biometrics now required for Filipino applicants information is confidential and will be protected, but that they do have an agreement in place to share information with the United States, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, which has been done in accordance with Canada’s privacy laws, and human rights commitments. For more information, users can check the government’s web page, Canada Biometrics Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). The warning is important for all applications coming from abroad, especially the Philippines, which touches
upon many readers. Make sure that the applicants attend to biometrics requirements because it is in effect as of December 31, 2018 for applicants from the Philippines. New communication skills for the New Year As we kick-off the New Year, we also begin to turn our minds to how we could do things differently in the New Year. Some of the resolutions we commonly hear are things like, “I will go to the gym more often,” “I will try to lose weight,” or “I will finally complete the home improvement project I have been working on for five years.” One thing that is often overlooked is the way we communicate with others at work, whether it is done in person, in writing or in electronic form. It is great to have personal resolutions, however, instead of taking the “traditional” route it, may also be a great idea to think about positive career goals since we spend as much time at work as we do at home. The ability to communicate effectively is a highly important skill in today’s world especially in the workplace. Unfortunately, there are still very many people who struggle to communicate effectively, either in writing or speaking. Communication is only successful when both the sender and receiver understand the message being shared. The way we communicate affects every facet of our working life,
regardless of our expertise and skills in our field. Research also shows that good communication is one of the top “soft skills” that managers look for in employees. Our communication style can tremendously impact our relationships at work and it can influence our future in the organization. Having said that, there are four basic communication styles that are commonly used Passive Individuals who use this type of style often are quiet; they do not voice their feelings or express their desires; they defer to others to make a decision to avoid conflict; and they trust others but not themselves. This style often leads to misunderstanding, unresolved issues or resentment. A person who uses this style may say things like, “whatever you want is fine with me,” or “it’s fine, don’t worry about it.” Aggressive This style of communication disrespects others and violates the rights of others. It involves expressing feelings and needs at the expense of others; they ignore the rights of others in order to get what they want; they are defensive when confronted.
A person who uses this style may say things like, “this is what we’re doing, end of story.” Passive-aggressive This style is a combination of the passive and aggressive styles of communication. The best way to explain this style of communication is through a social media lens, particularly when it comes to “vaguebook.” The urban dictionary defines “vaguebook” as “an intentionally vague or one-worded status update, alluding to something else.” Basically, any posts that are vague and cryptic that appear to have been intentionally written to elicit attention or a response is called “vaguebooking.” They post ambiguous messages on their status instead of dealing with the issue they are faced with in real life. On their post, they rant about their current situation. For example, if someone cut them off at a store during boxing day and they got really upset by it, but in reality they did not actually have the courage to say anything to the other person so, they may post something like, “To the guy in a red shirt at XYZ Store today, have some manners!” People who uses the passive-aggressive style of communication at work are
often sarcastic, complaining or gossiping. They may appear passive on the surface but deep within they are acting out anger. They use indirect communication to avoid a conversation and will often give you the silent treatment. They may say things like, “Sure, we can do things your way,” then thinks to himself or herself that the other person’s idea is stupid. Assertive This style is direct and honest and it communicates with respecting the feelings and needs of others while also asserting their own. This style has also been known to be the most effective as it uses “I” statements such as, “I feel frustrated when your reports are late.” Using “I” statements indicates ownership of feelings without putting the blame on the other person. When we communicate with others, it is important to recognize each communication style and in which context they are used. When we encounter coworkers who do not use our preferred way of communicating, we may find ourselves in a conflict situation. By becoming aware of our own communication style and recognizing our coworkers’ style, we can adapt more easily to an appropriate communication
style suitable in any given situation. If you have not heard of any of these communication styles, the New Year would definitely be a great year to start becoming familiar and becoming more aware of the styles that we prefer to use. Healthy communication will ensure that healthy work conflict-free relationships are maintained all year round. 2019 Year of the Pig overview The Year of the Pig is bringing with it a delightful surprise – prosperity. That’s because the wealth star is moving in as the reigning star for the year. With a delightful pair of the prosperity star and the pig, often symbolized as a bank, coming together in 2019 brings opportunity, prosperity, and good fortune. The eight star is a star that represents ease of making money with flowing opportunities and chances to make more money. The Chinese Year of the Earth Pig begins on Feb. 5, 2019 till Jan. 24, 2020. Key themes for 2019 Opportunities come but will you let them go? Regardless of your zodiac sign, the year brings with it a chance to act on opportunities. Like the proverbial brass ring, this is the year that opportunity will find you – but you must act and take action in a calculated way. Avoid rushing this year into anything; however, don’t let the opportunities that do come to you slip through your fingers. You’ll find that if you keep up your efforts in a measured way, they’ll pay off in the year ahead. Love relationships could be strained All years bring with them some kind of problem, there’s no getting around that. One worry on the horizon is health and relationships. Let start with relationships. There is a difficult energy around the love sector this year that can cause breakups and challenge even the most solid relationships. That makes it especially important to work on your relationships with your family, your love interest, spouse or partner. If you think you’d benefit by getting relationship counselling, then go ahead and start that. It could save a marriage or your relationship. Men’s opportunity to shine, but there’s one point of worry For men, there is a wonderful energy that brings opportunities to make money now and in the future. This is the year men must look toward the future for ways they can increase their income. The year will support their endeavours. The dark cloud dotting the sky is men’s health, particularly for older men. Younger men can manage
the fire energy headed their way more easily but as a man ages, it becomes harder to handle. This year, men will want to pay close attention to their health, particularly around their eyes, heart, blood pressure, and anything dealing with blood, such as clots or stroke worries. Men over 40 will want to be especially watchful – and see a doctor if there’s any concern. Women’s challenges and the silver lining they present For women, there is also a concern around health. If you take good care of yourself and keep up with your regular medical appointments, you’ll do fine. It’s vital that you also pay close attention to any physical, financial or relationship issues this year. And although women host a difficult energy, it’s important to remember that this energy is one that can bring important changes. Your life may change in a significant way, and honouring your needs and what’s important to you and you alone is a big part of a transformation that could occur if you honour what matters most to you. It’s vital that you think about yourself and your life in a bigger way. In some ways, I believe that 2019 can be a woman’s year. The number 8, the reigning number is the shape of a woman. It also represents thought. Women who take their needs into account and do it in a thoughtful way will come out ahead, feel renewed at the end of 2019, if not altogether transformed. The spark of danger or opportunity There’s an image I want everyone to think of this year – an image of a spark. Like the horrific fires in California in November 2018, it was a simple spark. This year the spark could be an inkling or talk around the water cooler about your job that a pink slip’s coming, a funny bump on your arm that needs to be checked out, a suspicion about your bank or investment accounts. Or, it’s that spark of an idea, a whisper of an opportunity. Be aware that big things can occur from a simple spark. Listen to those whispers. Just keep tabs on the important things this year and
all will be well! Avoid doing anything too risky with money or health and safety and the Pig will be a wonderful year. Love gets a boost with the Year of the Pig. The love star moves to a favourable position and helps you find love at work or while on business. The income and opportunity star moves into the west, bringing opportunities from that direction to help you make more money. The blessings star moves east and offers families blessings, windfalls and assistance from important people. Zodiac signs that have great luck in 2019? Rabbits, rats, roosters, dogs, and pigs all have a great year coming at them. But here’s the better news still… is that we ALL get to enjoy the 8 Prosperity Star in the centre sector for it will bring benefits and good fortune to all homes, and to everyone in them. That’s the best news that 2019 has to offer! When can you expect to see the changes? December is when the shift begins in earnest from the 2018 energies to the 2019 energies. However, the old energies of 2018 could become stronger as they leave. This often happens during the year and each month as the energies move in and out of their positions. So, be on the watch for those. To recap, let’s cover some important points: • Everyone will enjoy the glow of the Prosperity Star in 2019 because it moves to the centre! • Men enjoy popularity and recognition, but they should watch their health particularly with the heart, eyes and blood. • Men should lay the groundwork this year for things that pay in the future, such as investments, new jobs, etc. • Women can make inroads in becoming who they are meant to be, but must watch out for themselves with regard to money, job, and most importantly, health. • Families will benefit from working together and joining forces, traveling to distant locales and spending time near water. • Watch your assets and investments this year. Get all investment promises in writing. Watch your financial and savings accounts closely for fraud or loss.
• Love can come from places around water, at work or anything to do with business or travel on the job. Think positively about the year ahead and add a happy looking pig to your home! They’re smiling, happy energy is a benefit to the whole house, especially when placed in the north-northwest of the home. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My entire living space is in the basement. I’ve had no income since 2011 due to some serious illness that has very recently resolved. I’m trying to find work and get my own place. I’ve GOT to get out of here for mental and physical health continued improvement. How can I handle this? Answer: I’m so glad you wrote – and happy to hear your health has improved. That’s great news, but it’s so important that you get out of that basement. It’s harmful for your progress. Living below ground is symbolically unhealthy and isn’t good for growth and change in your life. Add some plants and plenty of light in your living space (but no plants by the bedroom/bed area). Keep something moving, too, such as a pendulum clock or
fan – this is helpful for keeping energy invigorated. If you leave the house, keep the lights on and keep some music playing. You want to keep your space as energized as possible. I also would like for you to have a view – something you don’t get in a basement. Why? I want you to “see” more and get perspective – and that means getting you visually out of the basement. Get a poster of a beautiful scene of valleys or the beach – put it in a window frame type picture frame and hang it on the wall in the east, if you can, so that you have a beautiful view in the part of your home that represents health, and this year, opportunity. 2018 was “it” Much to the chagrin of my kids, I like to overuse popular slang long after it has died out. I’ve taken it upon myself to embarrass the Burgos Bunch as much as possible. I’ve used the word “lit” instead of saying hot, awesome or cool. Lit is this generation’s version of “rad” or radical from the 80s. And what about “100”? That would be another generation’s version of for real or straight up. You see, just like fashion, slang terms have a way of making a comeback, but in a slightly updated form. I’ve never stopped saying awesome or wicked. My all time favourite is sweet. I’ll just keep using it until it is cool once again. As for lit or 100, I’m going to guess that these words don’t have the staying power and will wither away from the mouths of millennials with its only existence found in the urban
dictionary. What else will 2018 be known for? For me, it was the year of politics. I was shocked to follow the North American Free Trade Agreement discussions and how Canada (notoriously known for having the nicest people in the world) was portrayed as taking advantage of our American neighbours. And what about the images of the migrant caravan from Central America making their way north hoping for a better life. I will never truly comprehend the hardship of the thousands that made that journey. Those two stories made a big impression on me this past year. Closer to home, 2018 was the year for Fortnite. I don’t play it, but it seems that many do and everyone knows at least one person who has. Fortnite’s business model is simple: Download the game for free on pretty much any device or gaming system, add some good graphics, add a pay store where you can buy virtual coins (called V Bucks) to buy skins (gear and items) and you’ve got a game that attracts gamers of all ages. I can’t handle it. I get nauseous watching all the quick movements. I’ll stick to Super Mario Brothers on the Nintendo Classic thank you very
much, but my kids are hooked. I can’t help but laugh when I hear them get excited during the game. One kid (Gavin) has gotten so into it that he now streams his games. He has proudly exclaimed that he is amazing at the game – or should I say lit or 100? Did I use that right? He has shown me video of popular YouTubers who have commented on his play. Not bad kid. Social media didn’t start in 2018, but it sure has grown. Facebook’s CEO was questioned about the use of private information and how the popular social networking site was used to influence the 2016 American election. Instagram seemed to be the big winner this past year – I mean, who doesn’t love pictures, video or watching Instagram stories of their favourite celeb or public figure. Bella became a bit of a social media maven this past year. One of her videos alone garnered over 1.3 million views! 2018 for the Burgos’ wasn’t just about online gaming or social media. It was the year for fitness and sport. Dale Jr. took up boxing. It didn’t take long for him to get hooked (pun intended). He trained under a Team BC coach and was told that he was a natural. I thought he was full of it, until I started hearing it from other people. He had one match and knocked his opponent out. He’s now hung up his gloves and retires undefeated. Now that the kids are older and
we have more time for ourselves, Elizabeth and I have decided to join a gym. My wife chose to go with a personalized training approach. She’s up at 5:00 a.m. and at the gym before the roosters crow to attend a class with a trainer. The program features strength training and nutrition. As for me, I’ve chosen the solo route and got a city recreation pass.
Being a big lover of sleep I never thought I would do it, but I’m up with Elizabeth and I head to the gym before work. Soon enough, I’ll be able to pass as The Rock’s body double. It’s gonna be lit up in here. Sweet. Dale manages the communications department for a school district in British Columbia.

Grinch historians steal Christmas In Bolinao, Pangasinan, there is a small monument that marks the site of the first Christmas mass ever held in the Philippines. Two hundred years before Magellan wandered into the Philippine Archipelago, a Franciscan friar named Odoric of Pordenone, Italy is said to have landed on the shores of Pangasinan, seeking shelter from a stormy sea. Stepping onto the beach and carrying a black crucifix he met “hostile natives” who, upon witnessing his courage and faith, were soon pacified. After showing the locals some pictures of the infant Jesus, Joseph and Mary, the friar and his companions erected a cross and planted a Christmas tree. There they kneeled and celebrated the first Christmas mass in the Philippines and later baptized several Pangasinans. The date was December 25, 1324. Or maybe that date was in the year 1200 – or maybe it was on some Christmas day between 1280 and 1320. Take your pick; the facts are “open to interpretation,” as some history buffs might say. Real historians, however, must play the part of Scrooge in this Christmas tale and say, “Bah! Humbug!” – because it never really happened. Friar Odoric was a real person but it is not likely that he ever visited the Philippines – much less performed baptisms and a mass in Pangasinan. And the Christmas tree? Well, the Italian friar was probably not carrying a pine tree with him on his sea voyage. Also, tree decorating was considered a pagan custom at that time, not coming into fashion for Christians until the 1500s in Germany and not until the mid to late 1800s in the rest of Europe. Even today, decorating trees is not a major part of Christmas celebrations in
Odoric’s homeland of Italy where nativity scenes are more popular. Who was Odoric? Church biographers report that Odoric Mattiussi of Pordenone was born sometime around the year 1286 and he entered the Franciscan Order at Udine in about the year 1300. (Some historians, such as William H. Scott, doubt that he was a priest.) In 1318, Odoric set out on a mission to Asia. He travelled from Italy to Turkey, Iran, India, Sri Lanka, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Vietnam and China, where he stayed for three years. He then returned to Italy by an overland route through Mongolia and Tibet. When Odoric arrived home in 1330, he dictated the story of his 12-year adventure to a friar named William of Solagna in Padua but he didn’t say anything about a Christmas mass with a Christmas tree anywhere in his travels. The Pangasinan connection So where does Pangasinan fit into this story? Believers of the myth point to a place that Odoric called Thalamasin. Its supposed connection to Pangasinan is probably based on an overly hopeful interpretation of an 1866 book by Henry Yule, Cathay and the way thither. In an examination of Odoric’s account, Yule speculated on the possible meanings of the name Thalamasin and he noted that tanah masin means “land of salt” in Malaysian. This has been enough evidence for some history buffs to declare that Odoric visited the Philippines because the name Pangasinan means, “the place where salt is made.” Some also see a connection to a mythical land with a similar name, Tawalisi, which was the home of the Pangasinan warrior princess, Urduja – but that is an
entirely different myth. Odoric did not say anything about salt in his account of Thalamasin, which he said was also known by the name, Panten. He did say that this land had various trees that could produce flour, wine and poisons, and that the men of this place used blowpipe weapons and protective amulets inserted under their skin. However, as Yule pointed out, these characteristics could describe many places in the Malay Archipelago. Odoric’s narrative places Thalamasin somewhere between Java and Champa (now a part of Vietnam), and he said it was near the “South Sea.” However, Bolinao, Pangasinan is 16 degrees north of the equator and it is a huge detour from a direct route between these two places. Henry Yule’s best guess was that Odoric was probably talking about a place on the southern coast of Borneo now known as Banjarmasin, meaning “salt garden.” Yule also mentioned a place on the east coast of Borneo called Biru (now Berau) that had been listed in atlases with the names Talysian and Panteh. History & myth So, it turns out that this story of the first Christmas in the Philippines is pure humbug. But why would anyone bother to invent such a story? Unfortunately, there is no written history of the pre-colonial Philippines; almost no written documents at all, in fact. Foreign accounts are sketchy and they almost never mention places in the Philippines with recognizable names. This has been frustrating for historians and for Filipino nationalists, and it has led some of them to cross the line between history and myth. Wherever there is a lack of knowledge, there will always be some people who want to fill in the gaps with information that makes them feel important, no matter how desperately far-fetched that information is. Meanwhile, scientists and historians who do legitimate research that happens to debunk these myths are often painted as villains. In the case of Odoric’s mass in Pangasinan, they are like the Grinch who stole Christmas.

CRISTY... From page 18 pagsikapan.
She is specially suitable as NEDA head, Finance and/or sa BudgetManagement Departments at maging little president. Alalahaning the president has the last say. May Christmas break pa sila.
Kasabihan Ang kasakiman, may ganting kabayaran.

CRISTY... – CSF
