A hero in many ways by: Lucille Nolasco In the words of his own parents, 17-year-old Jaime Adao, Jr., lovingly called Jimboy, died a hero. The teenager was at home with his grandmother at about 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, when an intruder broke into their home on McGee Street. Jimboy immediately called 911 for help but the male intruder, upon entering the home, attacked him with a weapon. Police officers arrived within four minutes of the 911 call, just as the attacker shifted his attention to the grandmother. The officers shot the intruder. See HERO p9

The sachet problem There is a growing awareness in the Philippines these days that single-use plastics are, to put it mildly, a bad thing. Many grocery stores in Metro Manila don’t provide plastic bags, or at least penalize those who don’t bring their own “eco-bags” by charging for plastic bags. Here in Davao City, more and more establishments are using metal or bamboo straws for drinks. I also see more people carrying their own water bottles so that they don’t have to buy water in plastic bottles. But while I appreciate these steps, I think they’re targeted at the wrong thing. I’ve always felt that the real problem in the Philippines is not plastic bags, straws, and plastic bottles because these are pretty easy to deal with. Just ask stores, restaurants, and other such places not to use them. If they’re not available, no one will buy them. The real problem, to my mind, is those infernal sachets that are the very essence of the “singleuse” problem. Many consumer items in the Philippines can be bought in sachets: shampoo, snacks, instant noodles, sanitary napkins, juice drinks, coffee, sugar, creamer
(or the ubiquitous “3-in-1” that contains the last three). For as long as I can remember, the “takatak” boys (so-called because of the sound they make with their wooden boxes make to announce their presence) have been selling cigarettes by the piece and not by the box to drivers in the streets of Metro Manila. That’s the “tingi” culture in action – retailing items because they are cheaper to buy by the piece than in bulk. Of course, buyers actually spend more in this transaction because each piece is sold at a higher price than if they had been bought as a whole, but with many people earning on a day-to-day basis (or as we say in Filipino, “isang kahig, isang tuka”), it’s easier to buy just one piece today and let tomorrow take care of itself. “Tingi” was actually the practice – indeed the essence – of the sari-sari stores, where the owners repackaged the supplies they bought in bulk to make it easier for neighbours to buy them. They made money by marking up the prices of each item, but it was still more affordable to the average person than buying the whole set. The packaging I remember
from my childhood were usually unmarked paper bags, but as manufacturers wised up, they realized that they could latch onto this “tingi” mentality by simply packaging their items one by one. I don’t know what product started the craze, but soon enough everything could be bought in sachets. Today I can’t see any sarisari store selling items repacked by the owners themselves; these have been replaced by sachets of every single item. The problem is that sachets are made of plastic (as well as aluminum and other materials that are equally non-recyclable). The result is that over the past decades that we have been buying them, we have become flooded with plastic waste that is a nightmare to deal with. An article in Agence FrancePresse (AFP) cites a report by the non-governmental organization GAIA that said Filipinos use and discard 48 million plastic bags every single day – and more than half of the non-recyclable plastics are in the form of sachets. The problem is that the obvious solution of banning sachets won’t work because many will rise up in protest because they can’t afford to
buy in bulk. “Tingi” happens to be also virtually cultural for Filipinos; even those who can afford to buy in large quantities prefer to buy the sachet versions of products because they are more convenient and do not expose the products to constant opening if they were together in big containers. Instant coffee, for instance, tends to solidify at the bottom of the bottle because of the frequent opening and scooping out it goes through. Sachets solve this problem. I personally don’t have a solution to this. It’s one of those things I look at in resignation and simply wish we would get our acts together and stop using sachets. The recent clean-up of the shoreline of Manila Bay highlighted the problem of single-use plastics, but I think it will take more than that to convince people to give up their sachet-buying habit. Is debt getting in the way of your love life? by Tim St Vincent Back in May of 2017, I wrote an article for the Pilipino Express called “Couples and Money.” The idea behind that article was that money could be causing you difficulties in your current relationship. Maybe we should take a step back and ask the question of whether debt is causing more difficulties than you thought; perhaps it’s even getting in the way of you simply dating! Let’s start with the more obvious point; dating costs money. If you’re carrying a heavy debt load and are just barely getting by, it’s hard to date. Beyond a certain age, taking a bus to a movie or to grab a bite to eat just isn’t going to work. If you’re having problems making rent or staying on top of your bills, where are you going to come up with the money to go on a date? Using credit cards isn’t an option, especially when you have already maxed them out. If you find yourself in any of these situations, you may want to read some of my previous articles on budgeting and debt management. Now let’s take another step back, before the date is even set up, and look at how a potential partner may perceive you if you are carrying a heavy debt load. According to a recent survey over
67 per cent of Canadians say they would reconsider getting into a relationship based on debt. Men and women dislike debt equally, so whatever your preference, gender won’t help you with this one. The only thing that may help you is that Baby Boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) dislike debt more than Millennials (those born between 1983 and 2000) with 70.6 per cent of the Baby Boomers saying it’s a strong negative. The Gen X people (those born between 1965 and 1979), well, not surprisingly, they tend to be between the other two generations with respect to their thoughts on debt. It seems the older we get, the less tolerant of debt we become. (Or from my perspective, the older we get, the smarter we get! Yes, I am a Baby Boomer but at the younger end!) Geography may help you a bit here because 71.4 per cent of those in central Canada (those financially conservative prairie people!) are the most likely to stay away from you if you are carrying a lot of debt, while only 60.8 per cent of west coast (tree hugging?) Canadians would consider it a strong negative. All three generations and all geographic locations agree on one thing though, with almost 60 per cent saying that payday loans are a deal breaker.
This if followed closely by high credit card debt with almost 50 per cent saying that it would get in the way of dating. Now this isn’t to say that all debt is bad! Mortgage debt, business loans and student loans are all okay if they aren’t excessive and are manageable. It’s important to remember that when you are dating, you are looking for a potential life partner. The movies may say that “love conquers all,” but we know (hopefully!) that this only applies to movies. We have to deal with the real world implications of life, and one of those implications is that life costs money. We have to plan for homes and children and all the other things that go on in our financial lives on a daily basis and at the same time recognize that there are two things that will impact this: your job and your debt. What do new people meeting for the first time typically ask in the first 60 seconds? The answer is: “What do you do?” They ask this either consciously or subconsciously as they are assessing your financial potential as a partner. The other part of this financial assessment is how much debt are you carrying. Talking about debt is a bit of a taboo topic in our culture, but through conversation and observation this
question is also answered, it just takes a bit more time to get there. Now I don’t want you to think that dating is all about the numbers! There is a lot more to it than that. Love is a powerful factor but you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t think debt was a strong factor as well. If you are having problems in your dating life, don’t call me. That’s not the type of counselling we do! If you are having problems in this part of your life, you may want to look at your finances and see what impact they are having. Now, if you need help figuring out your finances, balancing your budget, getting debt under control or anything along those lines, please contact us and let’s see what we can do! What is syphilis? Dear Ate Anna: I hear a lot about something called syphilis on the news. What is that? Signed, A Reader Dear Reader: Thank you for your question! Syphilis has been in the news a lot lately. This is because there is new information available on how syphilis is affecting people in Manitoba. Syphilis is a bacteria which, if a person has it, can cause health problems in their body. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection; this means that it can be passed from one person who has syphilis to another person through sexual contact. The only way to know if a person has syphilis is to get a syphilis test. If you have a Manitoba Health Card, this test is free and you can get it through your health care provider or a community health centre. Some people who have syphilis may have symptoms including sores on their genital area, their bum area, and/or their mouth. It is very important to know that somebody might have syphilis while not having any symptoms. So a test is very important. The reason that syphilis has been in the news a lot lately is because the number of people in Manitoba who have syphilis has increased quite quickly over the last few years. According to the CBC, there was more than double the number of confirmed cases of syphilis in Manitoba in 2018 than in 2014. Syphilis can be very harmful to a person’s health. If left untreated it can become very
serious and damage a person’s internal organs. It is also very concerning if a pregnant person has untreated syphilis, because it can very seriously affect the health of the baby when it is born. The good news is that the transmission of syphilis can be prevented. Safer sex barriers such as condoms can be used in order to protect from transmission from one person to another during sexual activities. Condoms and dams can also be used during oral sex to prevent transmission. Be sure to know how to use these supplies. You can find more information on this on our website at www.serc.mb.ca. Remember, the only way to know if you have syphilis is to get tested. Testing is free with a Manitoba Health card with your health care provider or a community health centre. Using
safer sex barriers correctly can prevent transmission of syphilis from one person to another. Be sure to have condoms and dams available, and know how to use them! It is always good to be prepared. Ate Anna Ate Anna welcomes your questions and comments. Please write to: Ate Anna, Suite 200226 Osborne St. N., Winnipeg, MB R3C 1V4 or e-mail: info@serc.mb.ca. Federal caregiver pilots From rumour to announcement
The federal government has been working for several years to clear up the backlog of applicants remaining from the old Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP). The old program, which was phased out in 2014, has only 495 cases left to be processed, representing 2,655 people. This number represents a 94 per cent reduction from the 9,000 active cases reported in October 2017. Now that the backlog has been reduced over time, what are the current plans of the immigration department? The existing applications in the LCP cue should be cleared up within the next year. Applications for the current Caring for Children and Caring for People with High Medical Needs pilots are expected
to be proceeded in six months or less. But these five-year-old pilots are expiring and will not be renewed. In a departmental announcement, dated February 23, 2019, Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the release of two new 5-year immigration pilots that will replace what they describe as “expiring and ineffective pilot programs.” The description for the proposed pilots has become the talk of the coffee shops and gathering places through Winnipeg. Yes, IRCC is adding some substance to the rumours. IRCC’s stated intention is to allow caregivers to come to Canada together with their family, leading
to permanent residence. Sounds interesting. Under the new pilots, applicants can be assessed for permanent residence before they begin working in Canada, but will require two years of work experience in Canada and a valid work permit. These pilots will replace the current Caring for Children and Caring for People with High Medical Needs pilots. Minister Amed Hussen states the overall objectives: “Caregivers provide care for families in Canada that need it, and it’s time for Canada to care for them in return. We are providing them both with the opportunity to bring their family members here and access permanent residency to demonstrate your commitment.” The new Home Child Care Provider pilot and the Home Support Worker pilot will begin
later this year with a maximum of 2,750 principal applicants each, for a total of 5,500 principal applicants per year. Dependent children, spouses, partners would be in addition to the target numbers provided by the department. The starting dates and further application details will be announced later in the year. In addition, IRCC is trying to accommodate caregivers inside Canada who arrived after the changes in the stand alone program were made in 2014. The relief for such applicants will come in the form of an Interim Pathway for Caregivers program, which is set to open some time between March 4 and June 4, 2019. In general terms the announcement is long on encouragement and promise, but to date, short on details and requirements. The “devil is in the details” is the
caution that we should proceed with. We need to know more details about requirements for candidates and LMIA if applicable. It is best to reserve final judgement until more is known. I encourage all readers to become aware of the names of the three pilots and to keep your eyes and ears open. Gossip is often fact-based and confirmed later. This appears to be the case with the proposed changes for caregivers. Prevent drowning, save our loved ones The weather is anticipated to get warmer, and that means many people are eagerly planning their travels and outdoor activities. Among the favourite warm weather activities are going for a long drive, camping and swimming. The latter in particular, is a sure hit with children and young people who love to frolic and play in the water. But did you know that drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for Canadian children and youth up to the age of 19 years, and the fourth leading cause of injury death for all ages, according to data from Manitoba Health. Statistics from the 2018
Manitoba Drowning Report shows that 100 per cent of the time, little children were left unsupervised or the adults supervising them were distracted; while young and older adults were either not wearing life jackets, had consumed alcohol or were swimming alone. Still, according to the 2018 Manitoba Drowning Report, 81 per cent of those who drowned were male, while 19 percent were female. Drownings recorded occurred in lakes and ponds, rivers and ditches. And 73 per cent of drownings occurred during the months of May to September. Life is precious. And as with most tragedies, the best prevention is being informed, getting proper
information and training. The Lifesaving Society of Manitoba has been saving lives for over 100 years through their training programs, Water Smart public education and drowning prevention. They also train all of Manitoba’s National Lifeguards. Last year, the Lifesaving Society – Manitoba Branch has partnered with radio stations around the province, including CKJS 810 Winnipeg, to share drowning prevention and public safety messages to all Manitobans. Important messages were delivered in English, French, Cree, Ojibway, Tagalog, and Punjabi. Most recently, the Lifesaving Society is assisting the World Health Organization (WHO) to spread awareness in Canada of the first ever Global Report on Drowning; Preventing a Leading Killer. The report pinpoints drowning as a major public health issue and calls on the world’s nations to ramp up drowning prevention measures. Drowning is preventable. Let us protect our loved ones and ourselves. For more information, please visit lifesaving.mb.ca

Champion child,
Gianna Eusebio Gianna Eusebio was born in September 2008, about three months too soon. At one pound she was about the size of a cell phone and she needed intensive care to stay alive. Before the age of one, her heart stopped, she was blind, and her lungs filled up with fluids. Now 10 years old, Gianna will devote this year to raising money for the neonatal intensive care unit at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital as the 2019 Champion Child. “Today, I can see with glasses, I use an inhaler to open my lungs to breathe and my mom says I have fire running through my veins. I owe my life to the Children’s Hospital and the people who support it,” said Gianna in a release following her appearance at a press conference at the Walmart Super Centre, Kenaston Blvd, on Tuesday, March 12. For the next year, Gianna will represent Manitoba and be an ambassador for the 120,000 children who visit the Children’s Hospital every year. On March 16, she travels to Florida to meet other Champions from across North America. There she will celebrate her achievements and meet with international media to help showcase Manitoba’s Children’s Hospital and research institute. Gianna has also set a goal to raise money to support the unit that saved her life, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Gianna is the first Filipino Champion Child in the history of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. She and her parents, Tes and Philip Eusebio, and older sister, Milan, are all proud of their culture. While pregnant, Tes Eusebio, learned that she had preeclampsia, a condition in which her blood pressure was extremely high. This led to her daughter becoming sick and Tes needing an emergency C-section at only 27 weeks of pregnancy. Gianna was experiencing congestive heart failure due to a condition called patent ductus arteriosus, or PDA. She had to go directly to the NICU where she would spend the first seven months of her life. “The first year of her life was quite a difficult one,” Tes told the Pilipino Express. “My husband and I worked very hard to make sure we gave as much time as we could to be at the hospital with Gianna and learn everything directly from the physicians, as well as balance our home life and ensure our other child had no effect on what was
happening. One of the hardest times by far, but well worth all the sacrifices knowing both kids are doing well today! Today, I have to say I still worry about her health, and question anything out of the ordinary.” While in hospital, baby Gianna’s lungs filled with fluid and she required heart surgery. Three weeks later it was determined that she was partially blind, which required laser eye surgery, as well. But despite the rough start that Gianna endured, Tes attributes the great care she received at Children’s Hospital for her daughter being here today. “(The treatment) was so amazing; she’s literally been in every department. Everyone there has been good, especially the NICU. We leaned on each other, on our faith and trusted the physicians entirely. Only the two of us understand how difficult it was but along with our

families and friends, we had a community of support to help us through it all,” said Tes. Today Gianna is a spunky and vibrant 10-year-old in Grade 5 who wants to be an artist, singer or palaeontologist. “She’s active, loves sports, playing tennis, and anything outdoors, but also loves quiet time reading and drawing,” said her mother, Tes. “Gianna understands her circumstances
quite well,” said Tes. “We teach her and help her understand because it’s important she understands how special her story is. We also go to the hospital every year and give thanks to a special physician or nurse and show our appreciation for what they have done and what they are still doing. She knows she is very blessed and knows why we always support the hospital in anyway we can. I hope that by sharing Gianna’s story we can bring awareness to the community on how important it is to continue to support our Children’s hospital. There are many more kids out there who need our help. As a community, let’s come together and show our support and make miracles happen!” The Champions program, run by the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, honours remarkable children who have triumphed despite severe medical challenges. The Champions program is sponsored by Walmart Canada, and Air Canada. Pilipino Express/Goodbear.ca

Energy siphons that harm your home’s feng shui One of the most common concerns in feng shui is an energy block, such as a tree opposite a door, or a wall facing the door of your home. Blocks can stop and prevent energy from moving properly and will cause blocks to everything ranging from pregnancy to money, illness to opportunity. However, the same could be said of energy siphons, but unlike blocks, siphons can actually cause serious harm. Energy siphons are the holes and drains on your home – and your life – feng shui that prevent income, happiness, success, marriage or good health. You may wonder why your life is going downhill, or that it doesn’t seem to have traction anymore, or you can’t ever seem to get ahead. This can be one of the most frustrating situations in feng shui because the drain can be very subtle over time, much like the frog that doesn’t recognize it is being boiled to death, you may simply learn to cope with the problems, but never really surmounting them. But complacency is not the
answer; revitalizing your home and your life can help stop the drains of energy from your front door so that you can regain your footing again. What should you look for? These are some of the most common energy siphons that can create problems in our lives, like stagnation, declining life situation, and even harm. Ditches – When you see a ditch from your front door, your eye, and thus your home’s chi, flows there. Do something to block the view, such as plants – or life will become an uphill battle. Stairs – If your front door is too close to a stairway or is opposite a set of stairs, energy is siphoned away from your home and life, creating a myriad of problems. Dried flowers, dead plants – Whether these are mementos or you simply like dried flowers, having dead energy in your home will drain your health and financial well-being. The same is true of dead trees or shrubs. Parking lots – When your home faces an open parking lot, there are many problems that
can befall you and everyone in the household. These can range from injury and loss to violence and accident. Plant a hedge to block the view or erect a fence or stonewall. Eyesores – Chi is a living energy, and where the eye goes, chi flows. If your eye is always drawn to an eyesore around your home like a neighbour’s old junky cars, a large overhead power line, a dead tree or other eyesore, this impacts your home and drains your home’s energy. Hallways – This is a common problem for apartment and condo dwellers. If there is an open hallway that is close to your door, it becomes a “hole” with the potential to siphon and drain the energy from your home and life. They can also be a place where predators hide and cause you harm. Elevators – Like hallways, elevators – especially those located opposite a front door will drain the energy from your front door every time it opens in front of your house causing problems that range from relationship problems, marital difficulties and the inability to attract a mate to career and financial dilemmas. View of bathroom or kitchen
from front door – These can cause a decline in your health and opportunity will be in short supply as they drain the energy right at the door from entering the remainder of the house. REMEDIES All is not lost if you have a siphon at your front door. Make sure you work to activate your front door to encourage chi energy to enter your home and bring opportunity to your life. Add light – Keep your door brightly lit with a porch light, string lights or lamp inside front window. Keep your front door well lit; this will help draw energy to your home and life. Add plants – Add a pretty plant, or even a basket or wreath on the door, to bring life and vitality to your front door. Refresh your door – Try adding a new black doormat to draw opportunity to your home, give it a fresh coat of paint and maybe some new hardware to keep it in great condition. Block unsightly views – Whether this is a bathroom that can be seen from the front door or a ditch or eyesore, use curtains, plantings and other visual blocks to stop your eye from seeing these sights and having them impact your door. Use protectors – These can be fu dogs, chi lins or even a statue of a dog to look out as a protector at your front door. Activate the inside – Use helpful activators in your foyer with images of a dragon, birds, or placing a water fountain by the doorway to help bring chi and beneficial energy to your doorway. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I have had my best
month in my consulting business that I’ve ever had, and I think feng shui has a lot to do with it. Thank you Katie! How do I keep it going? Answer: Well, congratulations to you – what an accomplishment. Making strides in business feels so rewarding. The key is to keep doing what you’re doing so the momentum you built becomes like a train that just keeps chugging along. You want to keep the energy of your actions sustained, so be sure your work area and office is nice and bright (the light activates the 8 star of wealth this year) to help keep your business activated. Be sure to keep your desk organized, and add a dragon tortoise to your desk to keep opportunities flowing. The dragon tortoise is my favourite feng shui symbol, I guess because I’m a Gemini and I like double things. The dragon tortoise is the combination of a dragon and a tortoise – so it’s like a two for one symbol. I also recommend that you buy a label maker and make all your client files with nice labels (and in red folders, of course). Congratulations again – and keep up the great work. HERO... From page 1 Both Jimboy and the 29 yearold attacker were transported to the hospital. Jimboy succumbed to his injuries, while the attacker was in critical condition. Police also say it appears that the attack was random; the victim and the attacker were not known to each other. However, police knew the attacker before the incident. Initially the Police did not identify the attacker but more than a week later, he was identified as Ronald Chubb, 29. He has a long history of breaking and entering, according to court documents. Investigators believe that Chubb was high on meth during the attack. What happened to Jimboy was very tragic and senseless. By all accounts, he was a young man who was kind, loving and well liked. He was a hardworking student who planned to make his parents proud by becoming an executive chef. Many were questioning why this Chubb, this violent person, known to police, was still able to do a random attack like this. Why was he not behind bars? And now that it was revealed that the attacker was under the influence of illegal drugs, will this be a mitigating factor in the charges laid? The circumstances of Jimboy’s heart-wrenching death sent a ripple of renewed awareness of safety in the community. His death touched people’s thoughts and fears for themselves and for their loved ones. What do we do now? Winnipeg Police happened to hold their first quarterly safety forum of 2019 at Daniel MacIntyre Collegiate on the evening of Thursday, March 7. Among the topics discussed were gang awareness and the link between the current methamphetamine crisis and crime. On Friday, March 8, the Filipino community held a roundtable discussion on safety in our community at Maples Collegiate. It was attended by officers of the Winnipeg Police Service, local politicians and members of the Filipino community. Jimboy’s parents Jim and Imelda also attended. Most of us have had a “Jimboy” at some point in our lives: a son, a brother, a cousin, a best friend; a young man who is kind, loving and full of dreams; Jimboy could have been somebody great; a wonderful family man and a passionate influencer. Now Jimboy is gone. His death reminds us all that it is

Klayd Gatdula takes the prize Klayd Gatdula was named Champion in the Grand Finals of the Pinoy Pop Star Season 4 singing competition on Saturday, March 2. He was among 14 excellent singers from Winnipeg’s Filipino community who performed to another sellout house at the McPhillips Station Casino. Gatdula, a recent graduate of Red River College in the aircraft maintenance engineer programme, sang the ethereal piano ballad, You Are the Reason by Calum Scott to take home the top prize of $2,000 and the Grand Champion trophy. Andrea Macasaet placed as 1st Runner Up with a prize of $750 and a trophy for her powerful rendition of And I am Telling You from the musical Dream Girls. Joey Villanueva sang the Michael Bolton song How Am I Supposed to Live Without You to win 2nd Runner Up with a prize of $500 and a trophy. CKJS Radio personality Lucille Nolasco hosted the Grand Finals as emcee while JP Sumbillo covered the event on the 204 Live Music Facebook channel with Jhazon Paredes and Henry Balanial. The event was also covered on Papa Dee’s Ayos! Facebook channel. The official photographers were Arnel San Jose and Trebor Villaruel. During the tabulation of the scores, the audience was treated to performances from 2016 Pinoy Pop Star winner Aiza Luna and dance demonstration by a team of Zumba instructors: Elvie Conte, Neth Conte, Maricar Anaya Dee, Mhadzz Paz, Jophie Dela Cruz, April Kay Silv, Yolly Canlas, Rhiz Aco, Aila Delposo,
and Verlie Maco. This year’s Pinoy Pop Star contest benefitted from a panel of seven highly qualified judges: Anita Lubosch, Paul Kelvin Ong, Crystal Paculan, Rafael Ramiro, Frank Urbano, Maui Zamora, and head of the judges panel, Michele Majul-Ibarra. Throughout the semi-final and grand final levels of Pinoy Pop Star, the singers were judged on technical as well as artistic criteria. As emcee Lucille Nolasco explained to the audience, the judges were directed to score each singer between a minimum of 30 per cent and a maximum of 60 per cent for technical merit, and between 20 percent and 40 per cent for artistic merit. The technical component encompasses voice quality, tone, pitch, voice dynamics and, rhythm and timing. The artistic component includes interpretation, style, stage presence, confidence, originality, and creativity. Pinoy Pop Star Season 4 was produced by the publishers of Pilipino Express News Magazine – Emmie Joaquin, Paul Morrow, and Rey-ar Reyes – in co-operation with the McPhillips Station Casino. The whole production team thanks the helpful staff and management of the McPhillips Station Casino, especially Gloria Veale, for their aid in making this year’s event a great success. We also thank: emcee, Lucille Nolasco, for wrangling a lot of information while keeping the show running smoothly; the tabulating team of Connie De Villa, Relly Araneta, Belle De Leon, and Tess Marcelino; and production volunteer Isagani Bartolome.

Klayd Gatdula: In the spotlight by Lucille Nolasco Twenty year-old Klayd Gatdula did not show serious interest in music and singing until he was in first year high school in Mendez, Cavite back in the Philippines. This was when his father taught him to play the guitar, and he started to sing more in tune. “My family sings on videoke, but I was told I kinda sing out of tune,” Klayd remembers. “But ever since, I really liked Michael Bublé and Brian McKnight. I liked watching their music videos.” Two weeks before the Gatdula family immigrated to Canada in 2015, Klayd joined his first singing contest during their town fiesta. He was able to bring home the third prize. “I sang two songs back then, Lay Me Down and You Raise Me Up. I was so happy!”
Here in Winnipeg, Klayd saw a posting for Pinoy Popstar Season 4 and decided to join the live auditions. His former coworker also encouraged him to join the amateur singing contest. “I tried out on the last day of the live auditions. I thought to myself that if I don’t make it, then it’s ok. But if I pass, then game on!” Klayd was among the 40 Pinoy Popstar Season 4 semifinalists who battled it out through two days of eliminations. At the end of the second night, the judges chose the top 14 who advanced to the grand finals, including Klayd. “When all the grand finalists were called on stage, I just prayed. I was thinking, even if I don’t win, it was wonderful enough to reach the grand finals and get a plaque of appreciation with my name on it.” Imagine his surprise when his
name was called as the First Prize winner, the champion of Pinoy Popstar Season 4. “I couldn’t believe it! I was the last contestant to perform and all those who sang before me were really good singers. I really did not expect to win.” As the Pinoy Popstar Season 4 champion, Klayd received $2,000 cash and a trophy. “Now that this opportunity came, I would like to participate in more gigs, more shows. Eventually make my own songs. Also, I would like to hone my talent through practice, eliminating mistakes and to keep trying. Grab every good opportunity that comes my way.” Pinoy Popstar Season 4 Grand Final was held on March 2nd, at McPhillips Station Casino. It was presented by Pilipino Express News Magazine and McPhillips Station Casino.

Filipino-Canadian among victims of the Ethiopian Airlines crash Danielle Moore, a 24-year old Filipino-Canadian, was one of the 18 Canadians among the 157 killed when Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 bound for Nairobi, Kenya crashed, six minutes after take off from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on March 10, 2019. Danielle grew up in Scarborough, Ontario. Valedictorian of her 2012 graduating class at Scarborough’s Francis Libermann Catholic High School; Moore, as a teenager, was committed to environmental causes. She moved recently to Winnipeg to work for Canada Learning Code, a Winnipeg-based organization that advocates coding education in Canada. She was en route to the fourth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya. “She was very excited about her trip because she was so passionate about the environment,” said Danielle’s brother David. “Her goal was to find different solutions and to bring solutions back… she had more experiences than me in my 55 years,” said Danielle’s father Chris. Clariss, Danielle’s FilipinoCanadian mom said in a CTV media interview that she last spoke with her daughter on Friday, March 9. The heart-broken mother shared that during their conversation, Danielle had told her, “…you’re the best mom and best friend I could ever have because you set me free to help others…” The family said that Danielle had “wanted to change the world.” Danielle would have gone back to school this year at the University of Ottawa to complete her teaching degree.
On March 9, Danielle’s final post on her Facebook page was: “I’m so excited to share that I’ve been selected to attend and am currently en route to the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya with the United Nations Association in Canada and #CanadaServiceCorps / #LeadersToday! Over the next week I’ll have the opportunity to discuss global environmental issues, share stories, and connect with other youth and leaders from all over the world. I feel beyond privileged to be receiving this opportunity, and want to share as
much with folks back home. If you have a question/want to chat about an environmental issue/want to hear about my UN experience, please do not hesitate to message me!” Like her, many of those who perished were young worldchangers; the United Nations lost 21 staff members in the crash. As of press time, Canada joined a growing list of countries that banned the Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 9 aircraft from flying in its airspace. Photos from Remembering Danielle Facebook Page

CRISTY...

After noon, kilos na ako agad in preparation for the shoot.
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept.
Good days ang ika-19, 20, 27, 28 at 29.
Libra (Sept.

Harinawa. *** “There is dignity in silence.” She is the mother of my son. She has my respect and I’ll always respect her forever.” There is dignity in silence.
–CSF
