Cannabis and non-Canadian residents The Government of Canada made cannabis legally available to adults on October 17. In December 2018, those who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including cannabis will face tough new penalties. For non-Canadians, including permanent residents, the stakes will be high. Not only could they face a fine, criminal charges or even jail, but they may also lose their status and have to leave the country. Similarly for temporary residents, including visitors, international students and foreign workers, they may not be able to enter or stay in the country. See CANNABIS p4

Back to the future for Boracay Many years ago when my older brother was still a medical student, he took part in a community project with some classmates on a then-unknown island in the Visayas. He came home heavily suntanned and told us about swimming and snorkeling in the most beautiful beach he had ever seen. That island was Boracay, and when he and his classmates went there it was still unspoiled. My first and only visit to Boracay was in April of 2016, and of course by that time the jewel was already tarnished. I remember not being very excited about the trip; we were going there for a short R&R but I had already read about the large crowds and the nightly parties that, to my mind, were incongruent with what an island should be. Having lived in Mindanao for more than 20 years, I knew a thing or two about beaches: they’re supposed to be quiet respites from the noise and pollution of city life. Boracay was certainly not that. I guess few people, save for the older locals, remember what Boracay looked like before it became one of the most famous islands in the world – pristine, crystal-clear waters, powdery white sand, lush coconut trees, and friendly islanders who made a living from the bounty of the sea itself. It must have been an idyllic place, enjoyed solely by the people living there. It was quite literally a jewel resting on the bluest waters of the Pacific. Its value defined by its natural beauty that had not been touched by modernity. Boracay’s rise to global superstardom was initially slow. With no Internet and little media coverage, not many people caught on to the wonderful secret of Boracay. Word of mouth brought in a few tourists every once in a while, but the numbers were not enough to be a disruption on the island. The few who made it there – like my brother and his classmates – made sure to keep to the tenets of traveling:

take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time. But a jewel like Boracay could not be hidden for long, and soon waves of visitors began to come in to enjoy what it had to offer. The growth was exponential, and while initially it was a good development, the throngs of tourists brought in the inevitable commercialization that would ultimately spell its doom. Big business realized that a killing could be made by putting up establishments there. Soon hotels, restaurants, stores, bars, discos, and a wide variety of other money-making ventures began to sprout over the beachfront. With ineffective enforcement of environment laws, these businesses began to kill the island itself, so much so that President Rodrigo Duterte was constrained to call it a “cesspool.” The choice of the word was probably deliberate: a cesspool is less efficient than the more modern septic tank in taking care of household waste, and as such it allows waste to leak into its environment. That is exactly what Boracay was by the time the president ordered the entire island closed to tourists, and for the next six months the government worked on fixing every affront that was done to the island. Now the island is back to its old self, and it is our responsibility to keep it that way. Government can only do so much by way of regulation. Ultimately it is our job as a people to keep Boracay and other jewels from being destroyed by our own greed. It’s back to the future for the island, and we all have a second chance at doing Boracay right. CANNABIS... From page 1 Potential consequences for permanent and temporary residents • As of October 17, 2018, if a permanent or temporary resident commits a cannabis-related crime, such as illegally producing or selling cannabis, whether in or outside Canada, they could be found inadmissible, for serious criminality under our immigration laws. • Similarly, when the new impaired driving penalties take effect on December 18, 2018, most impaired driving infractions, including in cases where no one is hurt and the minimum fine is imposed, will be considered serious

crimes in Canada. As a result, both permanent and temporary residents could be found inadmissible for serious criminality. • Refugee claimants may not be eligible to have their claim referred for a refugee hearing • Appeal rights for permanent residents and foreign nationals, including sponsored members of the family class, could also be affected. In these situations, permanent residents could lose their status and have to leave the country. Similarly, for those who want to visit, study, or work temporarily in Canada, or who are already here temporarily, they may not be able to stay or enter the country. Source: Government of Canada

There is an almost mathematical truth to the correlation between restrictive immigration measures and applicant success. In other words, when government makes it easier for applicants to qualify, the number of successful submissions increases. This can be seen in the changes in applicant eligibility for Canadian citizenship since the change in governments from Harper and the Conservations to Trudeau and the Liberals. Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) estimates that by month’s end roughly 152,000 people will have received their Canadian Citizenship since changes were announced. Prior to the changes permanent residents were required to be present in Canada for the equivalent of four out of the past

PILIPINO EXPRESS

six years. This was reduced to the present three out of the past five years as of October 11, 2017. The change in residency, language proficiency, and skill test by age, had an immediate effect on the submissions of Canadian citizenship applications. The change corresponded to a noticeable spike in applications. The CBC has provided numbers showing that the average of 3,653 applications per week increased to 12,530 submissions in the first month following the October change. IRCC sources confirm that the number of applications continued to increase in the 12 months after the revived eligibility requirements were implemented. There were 242,680 applications received in the nine months

NOVEMBER 1 - 15, 2018

Canadian citizenship eligibility changes – one year later following the change. This represented an increase of more than 130 per cent compared to the 102,261 applications received over the same 12-month period in 2016 to 2017. The increase in application submissions is only one measure. There is also a corresponding increase in the number of people who received Canadian citizenship. The number, 152,000 noted above, represented a 40 per cent increase over the same period in 2016 to 2017. Other changes to the citizenship requirements include the opportunity for former temporary residents (workers) to claim up to 365 days towards the

three-year residency requirement, with each day spent in Canada as a half day. The language and knowledge requirements are also changed from ages 14 to 64 back to 18 and 54 years of age. It is noteworthy to consider that the residency, flexibility for former temporary residents, and the age for ESL and knowledge testing, are all restrictive changes imposed by the former Harper government. The reversal of the rules, which mirror those in place before the Conservatives, has become a boom for citizenship grants. “The government made important changes to the Citizenship Act, under Bill C-6,

to provide those wanting to become Canadian citizens with greater flexibility to meet the requirements,” Ahmed Hussen, Canada’s Immigration Minister, said in a statement. “One year later, we can see the difference these changes are making.” Michael Scott is a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC, R525678) who has 30 years of experience with Canada Immigration and the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program. Getting back up again after a hard fall Throughout my life, I have failed. I have fallen and lost. As a child and teenager, I sometimes missed out on awards, starring roles and playing on sports teams. Adulthood brought on missed job opportunities and promotions. I have failed at being a perfect mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend. I’m sure that I am not alone when I say that I have past regrets. We all have had times when we have wanted something so badly – a relationship to work out, a dream job, an award, or a first place finish. Sometimes, we put so much effort and wishful thinking into achieving a specific goal that we can’t picture life without this particular success. But it doesn’t always work out, and we all fail sometimes. This is true even for famous icons such as Oprah Winfrey. She is one of the most successful and richest women in the world, but her life began with poverty and an abusive childhood. She was once fired from her job as a television

reporter. The Beatles are one of the most iconic bands of all time, but were once rejected by a recording company who told them that “guitar music was on the way out.” Bill Gates had dropped out of Harvard and his first business idea was a flop. He didn’t give up and went on to build the empire that is Microsoft. Walt Disney was once told by a newspaper editor that he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas” and started several businesses that failed. Nowadays, Disney is a billion dollar corporation. These well known individuals all had two things in common. First, they had failed. Most of them did so multiple times. But more important, they were all resilient. This term refers to the ability to recover after loss, adversity and change. Successful individuals are able to heal from their losses, get back up and try again. They take a good hard look at their mistakes

and make changes. Although no one can predict when failure will occur, we can take steps to strengthen our sense of self and overall wellbeing, so that when a blow comes, we can recover. 1. Count your blessings. When we’re sad or angry, this can be very difficult. But we can get a new perspective if we take a step back to be thankful for the people in our lives, our health, and even our first breath in the morning. Chances are, there are great things in our lives that we take for granted every day. 2. Celebrate your successes. Looking forward to what the future might hold is wonderful, but we may forget to look backward to see how far we’ve come. I once worked with a client who was depressed after she had been declined a job opportunity. She believed that it was her dream job and knew that it could greatly benefit her family. But after a time of sadness, she was able to recognize that her education, accomplishments and current

career was something to be proud of. She had supportive family and friends around her and still enjoyed the work she did. After some time, she found peace in the words, “It is not yet my time to move on.” 3. Analyze past coping strategies. Do not only look at what you did wrong in the past, but how you overcame past failures. For instance, did it help to talk about it with a friend or counsellor? Or did taking up exercise help to blow off some steam? If it worked for you once before, it probably will again. 4. Redefine success. An article by Nash and Stevenson (Harvard Business Review, Feb 2004) explored the idea that success is actually made up of four components. • Happiness – Quite simply, this refers to how much joy and satisfaction you have in life. Some people, who are rich and famous and seem to be successful, can also be lonely, sad and angry. • Achievement – This refers to how close you have come to reaching goals that most people strive for (stable income, family and friends, contributions to society, etc.) • Significance – When you make a positive impact on the

people you care about, this is success. • Legacy – This refers to using your talents and accomplishments to impact the future of other people. Helping others to achieve their own goals and successes can leave you with a great sense of satisfaction. Nash and Stevenson state that you can only be successful if you hit on all four categories. Take a look at where you are lacking and see what you can do to change it. Also, recognize your limits. If you spend too much time on one goal, it may start to produce anxiety. This is a big clue that this path is no longer rewarding. You might have to change your approach or viewpoint and take a break. And then when you’re ready, you can get back up and try again. “I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” – Michael Jordan Cheryl Dizon-Reynante is a licensed therapist with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

Feng shui tips to fulfill your wishes Feng shui is often thought of as a way to arrange our environment, and it is. But it can also be used to symbolize our intentions. This type of symbolic feng shui is very much like vision boards – creating a dream you have using images to symbolize your deepest desires. But rather than a flat vision, this is a three-dimensional item that represents your goals and ambitions. Look at the feng shui ideas below for ways you can manifest your dreams and wishes! Write out a wish or manifesting list. You are the most powerful way to achieve your heart’s desires! Each month at the New Moon, you can write a list of 10 wishes, but you don’t always have to wait on the moon. Although I know the strength of the moon, don’t be afraid to make your own wish list! Write what you’d like and be specific, such as the perfect reading chair or a set of new dishes… whatever thing you’d like. Write out what you want like a cosmic catalogue order. It’s amazing how you can manifest your desires simply by writing them out and seeing them. Your hand connects to your brain and your eyes connect to your heart, so write out what you want. Call it a wish list or a manifesting list — whichever appeals to you. The wish-granting tree – Trees are excellent feng shui. They represent upward strength and growth. Trees can block and absorb negative energies for us. It can also be a tree that is planted with the intention of growth and change. Planting a tree in your garden with the intention of granting a wish is another way to use feng shui. Look for trees that are auspicious like fruit trees such as apple, plum, peach or if you’re in a warm climate, an orange, and lime or lemon tree. Plant these in the east, southeast or south corner of the garden. When planting a wish-granting tree, do your best to plant the tree as well as you can by amending the soil and making sure it has adequate water and sunlight. You can also do this in the house as well! The wish-granting gem – Gems are another way to manifest and actualize your wishes. Much like the diamond selected for a marriage proposal holds the intention and desire for marriage, so, too, do wish fulfilling gems that are made with a strong intention. Select a gem that appeals to you, such as a large faux diamond. If you have a certain desire, such as a new friend or recognition, select your gem according to your desire. Green is for family and health, yellow or gold is for wealth, relationships and helpful people, pink is for relationships, red is for friends and recognition or success, blue is for opportunity and spiritual enlightenment. White and purple may be used for any

wish you have. Select your wish fulfilling gem and hold it in your hands imbuing it with your wish and desire. Place the gem where you see it often, such as your desk, living room table, or bedside table. Be sure to place the gem near a light so that it is energized. The wish-fulfilling animals – There is a pantheon of animals that represent the fulfillment of your desires. The first is the cow. Long regarded as a holy animal in Buddhism and Hinduism, the cow is often showed on a bed of coins and represents reward for hard work and for perseverance. Whether symbolized as a cow, oxen or a bull, like the Wall Street Bull, the cow embodies wealth realized. The wish-granting technique – When you are working toward a goal, such as to sell your house or finalize your divorce, you don’t want to have to wait. Or, when you have a sincere desire, you want to find a way to bringing your desire to fruition. Start by buying a simple red folder. Once you have your folder you should place a pair of feng shui flutes or two simple pieces of hollow bamboo and tie them with a black and green ribbon. Place the flutes on the documents and place on a table on the right side of the main door as you stand inside and look out, NOT on the right as you look IN the door. Next, watch your wishes manifest in the next 30 days. You can place your monthly New Moon wishes here, too. The wish banner – Also called a banner of victory, the wish banner works much like a traditional Tibetan prayer banner that brings the prayers and wishes of the inscribed prayers to the

cosmos. Write your wishes down on a strip of paper or fabric and tie to a tree in your yard. The winds will carry your wishes upwards to be realized for you. This is especially helpful when you have a weather front coming through that is windy and will activate your prayers and wishes. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: Recently I went to a class on feng shui. The instructor said that the colour brown was the death colour in feng shui. She recommended we strip furniture down to the natural wood. She also said I need to cure the toilet with a red ribbon tied with three knots and a fern plant. Answer: I’m always happy to receive emails like these because it gives me a chance to correct some of the quackery in feng shui. Brown in the colour of big wood, like a giant oak tree. How could that be the symbol of death? In fact, brown is the colour of big growth, like a tree. White is actually the colour associated with death in feng shui and Asian culture. And, curing the toilet? This is another bit of feng shui myth making. I’m sorry you wasted your valuable time learning nothing that resembles real feng shui. Disregard what you were told. CraZy good Zumba party with Kass Martin Zumba Education Specialist (ZES) and international presenter Kass Martin was in Winnipeg on Saturday, October 20th, for her highly anticipated Zumba master class. The gymnasium of the Canadian Mennonite University was packed with Zumba instructors, students and fans alike, who eagerly awaited the arrival of the charismatic celebrity. Known as “the Face of Zumba,” Kass spreads the love for this fun, dance-fitness program all over the world through personal training, master classes, TV appearances, and through maintaining her own personal Zumba classes in Utah. As her first time in Winnipeg, Kass said she was so happy to be here, and very thankful for the warm and enthusiastic welcome she received from each and everyone. Even before the first beat thudded from the speakers, excitement was palpable among the participants, as they were chatting and laughing with friends and other attendees. And when Kass began the master class, it was a pure adrenalinefuelled party from then on! She was indefatigable and everyone loved it. And because people asked for more, Kass added four more songs to her set. After the master class, Kass spoke to the audience and did what she does best – she was her genuine self, sharing valuable

lessons in life derived from her own experiences. This never fails to inspire others to be a better version of themselves. Her struggles and hard work made her one of the most popular faces in the Zumba world. “If there’s anything I can leave you, a small-town girl from Provo, Utah who didn’t even have a passport, afraid of failure, which made me not try for anything, because if I didn’t try for anything, I wouldn’t fail at anything… So I just became very stuck. And here I am, in Winnipeg, where people showed so much passion. It just blows my mind. So thank you, for being a part of my dream.” Before she left, Kass promised to come back, and hopefully with her BFF, ZES Steve Boedt, next time. “Whether you’re the instructor or the student, we need each other. And what we are doing is an amazing thing! We are a part of something that is spreading joy globally. And to think of my life 10 years ago, it’s just pretty amazing the happiness that has come from this sweaty, little workout. So thank you so much for being here and for making me feel like a million-dollar rock star!” DRL Productions would like to thank all our media partners, sponsors, supporters families, friends and everyone who made all this possible. Thank you very much! Photos by Maui Zamora

VC Cuevas Bakery now in two locations Re-opens Notre Dame branch Winnipeg’s favourite Filipino bakery now has two locations in the city. VC Cuevas Bakery at 989 McPhillips Street has expanded by re-opening their original location at 506 Notre Dame Avenue – back where they started as Discovery Bakery, more than a decade ago. Baking is a family affair for 69-year-old Vergilio Cuevas – who has been a baker since the age of 15 – and his wife Corazon. “All my employees are relatives,” says Vergilio, “Many have day jobs as well.” At VC Cuevas Bakery, the day starts at 3:00 a.m. when one of the family members comes in to turn on the ovens. In the evening, Vergilio himself still prepares the dough and various fillings according to old family recipes, in addition to handling the day-to-day operation of the shop. Timing is important for the dough to rise by

early morning, when it is ready to be processed into savoury buns of many kinds, with delicious sweet or meat fillings. “Our products sell out quickly,” says Vergilio. The most popular items are pan de sal and their scrumptious turon, a caramelized banana fritter. Ensaymada is another favourite pastry. VC Cuevas also offer Spanish bread, bicho-bicho (elongated, sugarsprinkled donuts), pan de coco, siopao, hopia, siomai, empanada, and monay. The actual baking happens twice daily; in the early morning and at 2:00 p.m. If your timing is right, you can get your favourite baked goods warm from the ovens. There is also pancit and palabok on the weekends. Vergilio and Cora, have lived and operated bakeries in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, but Vergilio says he likes Winnipeg

Indeed, customers come from all over Winnipeg to buy the delicious products of VC Cuevas Bakery. The bakery often accepts large orders for special events. Vergilio says his steamed buns are especially popular in the Chinese community. Vergilio and Cora believe their customers are loyal because the good taste of their products is

CRISTY... From page 12 makatuturan ang kaniyang buhay. “We love Willie. He’s always been good to us.

15 years strong by Brandy O’Reilly and Nick Sears The Faculty of Engineering was delighted to welcome back alumni from the Internationally Educated Engineers Qualification (IEEQ) Program as part of the 2018 Homecoming Celebrations. The IEEQ Program is a program designed for Internationallyeducated engineers as a pathway to be considered academically qualified by Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba, as part of the process toward a professional Engineering (P.Eng.) license in Manitoba. The evening was not only to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the program at the faculty, but to also recognize the outstanding accomplishments of the many alumni that the program has seen since its inception in 2003. Joined by Dr. David Barnard, President and ViceChancellor of the University of Manitoba and Dean Dr. Jonathan Beddoes, alumni came together to reflect on their time in the program and collectively celebrate their many notable accomplishments since graduation. IEEQ Program Director, Nusraat Masood led the evening program, which included congratulations and reflections from past Director Dr. Marcia Friesen, Grant Koropatnick, CEO & Registrar of Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba and IEEQ program supporter, James Sinnock, Human Resources Advisor at Manitoba Hydro. Ethel Fernandez (P.B.Dip.Eng., 2013), spoke at length to those gathered about how she felt when she first arrived in Canada and not being qualified to obtain work in her field. Coming from the Philippines, Fernandez praised the IEEQ program and staff for their help and guidance throughout her time at the University. She said

CRISTY... From page 15 tanghalin siyang National Artist. Walang makadidikit

both the academic and cultural components of the program changed her life. Dr. Jonathan Beddoes, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering described the IEEQ program as “imaginative and unique” and also praised the program for allowing new Canadians to obtain work in their field faster upon arrival. He said the stories he heard from alumni were inspiring. The program’s former Director, Dr. Marcia Friesen said that she has seen continual growth since 2003 when the program was first launched at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Friesen, who was in attendance at the event, said, “It was wonderful to see so many years of IEEQ alumni attend the homecoming and to hear of the exciting developments in their professional lives, their involvements in service to the engineering profession, and to see the community that they’ve developed with one another. It’s truly a pleasure to have been a part of the program for so many years” For more information on the IEEQ program please visit us online: umanitoba.ca/engineering/ ieeq Brandy O’Reilly works for Communications and Special Projects at both the Faculty of Architecture & Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba Nick Sears is a Communications Assistant at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Manitoba Photos by Dylan Hewlett, freelance photographer, Architecture graduate student at the University of Manitoba Article originally published October 9th on UM Today http://news.umanitoba.ca/ieeqcelebrates-15-years. He’s a nice guy. Mabait siya and loving.”

“Dapat po niyang alalahanin See CRISTY p18

Canadian premiere of Vietgone at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre November 1 – 17, 2018 with preview on October 31

WINNIPEG – The Warehouse season begins with a bang! In this stylish mash-up, playwright and screenwriter Qui Nguyen features everything from hip hop to kung fu to tell the story of his parents’ escape to America after the fall of Saigon. A New York Times Critics’ Pick, Vietgone touches on themes of courage, resilience, love and loss. Quang is a badass pilot who saved lives during the war but was forced to leave his family behind. Sexy and strong, Tong is excited to write her own story but finds America isn’t exactly as advertised. Nguyen smashes stereotypes as he shares the pain and triumph of two warriors forced to find a home in a temporary world. Vietgone stars Simu Liu as Quang. “I’m so incredibly excited to have the privilege of playing Quang,” says Liu. “He is, to put it bluntly, a total badass; he is a killer MC, a Kung fu master, and an all-around amazing leading man. These kinds of roles are still so limited for actors who look like me, and I’m so grateful to playwright Qui Nguyen for writing it into existence.” Stephanie Sy plays Tong. “The story is led by strong, heroic, warrior women who will do anything to save themselves and

CRISTY... From page 16 na two decades ding naging source of income niya ang pagiging contract star ng GMA.

their loved ones.” Sy adds, “We have to present stories in our city that represent the people who live here. So many of our families, my own included, have their special immigration story about their journey to Canada. I hope plays like this continue to open doors of possibility for not only our audiences, but those aspiring to perform and write their own stories too.” “This is an incredible play because it subverts a lot of stereotypes and gives agency to characters who traditionally haven’t had any,” says Jeff Yung who plays the part of Nhan. “This role is vastly important to me because the character Nhan is one that I’ve not got to play often. He is brash and outspoken. … I feel very grateful to play a character that has such dimension and nuance, and very honoured to be given the space to be a part of telling such an important and entraining story.” “Vietgone boasts an allAsian cast telling a beautifully nuanced story about refugees coming to the ‘promised land,’” explains Jennifer Villaverde who plays the character Huong. “What’s special about this play is that it unapologetically destroys Asian stereotypes that have been

imposed onto us for generations. I don’t have to put on a vaguely Asian accent for people to accept or justify my … presence on stage.” Peter Fernandes fill multiple role: Playwright/Giai/Bobby/ Captain Chambers/Redneck Biker/Hippie Dude. “Performing in this show allows me to be a part some really important Asian story telling. So rarely do we see ourselves at the centre of the story, being the heroes, being multidimensional characters. And it’s an honour getting to tell a rarely told story in a fresh and exciting way.” The creative team behind the production of Vietgone includes Director Robert Ross Parker, Set & Costume Designer Joanna Yu, Lighting Designer/Video Designer Hugh Conacher, Sound Designer/Composer Alex Punzalan, Choreographer Wayne Santos, Fight Director Jacqueline Loewen, Assistant to the Director Loc Lu, Stage Manager Mike Duggan and Apprentice Stage Manager Zahra Larche. Tickets for Vietgone start at $22 plus GST. For show times and ticket information, call the Royal MTC Box Office at 204 942 6537, toll-free at 1 877 446 4500 or visit royalmtc.ca.

Rebelasyon ni Jake, “At a young age, she taught me that everything comes with a price. If I wanted ice-cream or chocolate, I had to win a contest before I can

have any of it. “The things such as toys, clothes and sweets which other people would normally give to kids were things I believed I had to earn.”

“For me, that was a sign na kailangan na naming sabihin sa kambal ang totoo.

Ayon pa sa kanilang social media post, “Diverse Food Canada aims to discover and promote the rich diversity of Canadian cultures and flavours.”

“Our videos may eventually change the way Canadian families prepare their meals. We discover, introduce, promote and eat. We may in some ways influence our viewers to try different delicacies and adopt these specialties into their kitchen homes.” Food trip na ulit with Diverse Food Canada! Noel Lapuz ay dating OFW sa Middle East (Dubai at Qatar). Nagtrabaho nang sampung taon sa City Hall ng Taguig bilang Human Resource Management Officer. ANCOP recognized in Ottawa The inter-parliamentary organization known as the Canada-Philippine Friendship Group recently recognized Ricky Cuenca and the ANCOP Canada charity in a ceremony in Ottawa. “ANCOP Canada has contributed to raising the quality of life for tens of thousands of people that are living in severe poverty, said Kevin Lamoureux, MP for Winnipeg North and chair of the friendship group. As reported in the Pilipino Express (September 1, 2018), Lamoureux and his daughter, the MLA for Burrows, Cindy Lamoureux, were in the Philippines this past August. Cindy Lamoureux described a visit to a polluted waterway in Paranaque City. “As we walked we saw on one side, the slums … On the other side we saw the new development in which ANCOP International and … the Rotary Club had partnered together to build. This development was the shining light that the people in a slum community desperately needed. What was neat was seeing how the money raised from the many ANCOP Members in Canada is being put to use in such a substantial way that is making a world of a difference.” From reports by Kevin & Cindy Lamoureux

US due to trade tariff issues. Nakapagharap na ng certificate of candidacy ang mga kandidato for the national and local elections.

The result will determine the leadership of the president hanggang sa 2022. Kasabihan Ang kabutihan at kasalanan ay kapuwa may kabayaran. CRISTY...

*** It’s a tie!

Home 2.0

Immigrants’ stories tour Manitoba schools Sarasvàti Productions is once again hitting the road to take powerful theatre to schools across Manitoba. Home 2.0 is a powerful interactive theatrical journey that explores the stories of immigrant and refugee youth who have resettled in Canada. It was created through extensive interviews with community members about their experiences as newcomers. Three Filipino-Canadian cast members, Joanne Roberts, Denisse Samaniego, and understudy Bennette Villones, are involved in the show. Although dozens of stories are incorporated into the performance, three main characters are followed. One of them is Rosa, who has come from the Philippines and wants nothing more than to go back home to her friends and her old life. It explores some of the challenges she faces adjusting to a new school, new language, and sometimes, conflicting expectations from her parents and Canadian friends. The play also looks at the stories of Michael, a 12-year-old from El Salvador, and Adnan, a refugee from Syria. The play ends with a worst-case-scenario for these characters, but the audience has a chance to intervene. At the end of the performance, the actors invite students on stage to step into the shoes of a character and try out positive solutions to the problems addressed. It’s an exciting and entertaining way to explore how communities can be more compassionate and inclusive, as well as what resources and supports are available.

Joanne Roberts plays several roles in the performance. She approaches acting like one does an extreme sport. A veteran of horror films, Joanne most recently starred in a short film titled Dead Bolt produced by CBC. As a comédienne Joanne joined Théâtre Cercle Molière for their Manitoba tour of De Bouche à oreille. Not one to shy from away from drama, a notable performance was as Sawda in Wajdi Mouawad’s Scorched. “This project means a lot to me,” said Roberts, “especially as a first generation Canadian that grew up watching my parents going through similar struggles after their immigration.” She also explained, “I think it’s a really important story to tell because we’re all able to be so aware about each other and each other’s struggles. I think it’s a great reference point for refugees, immigrants coming to Canada, as well as current Canadian citizens dealing with people from other countries.” Denisse Samaniego also portrays various characters throughout the show, including Rosa. Denisse is a Theatre and Education student at University of Winnipeg. As a part of the original cast of New Beginnings, she is excited to work with Sarasvàti Productions once again to bring you the revised version, Home 2.0. As an immigrant herself coming to Winnipeg at the age of three, she finds the stories very close to her heart and is honoured to be sharing these stories with all audiences.

She thanks her parents for always being supportive and bringing her to the beautiful country of Canada to live her dreams. She also thanks her sister for always being her number one fan. Bennette Villones has been joining the cast in rehearsal as an understudy for the show. She describes herself as just a girl who wants to inspire people and wants to pursue her dreams in the arts. To make and create art that’ll have an impact on people. A way to make people smile, laugh, feel understood, that they’re not alone and that they have a voice of their own they can share with world. For many youth, this might be the first time they are seeing their own ethnic background represented in the arts. For others, it might be the first time they’ve been able to really experience what it is like to be forced to leave your home and start again halfway across the world. What makes Home 2.0 so unique is that it allows students to share their thoughts and suggestions about situations that are played out in front of them on stage. Home 2.0 has been touring schools in Manitoba since October 15th and will run until December 7th. There were also two public shows; one was at the Graffiti Gallery on October 11th, and another at the Millennium Library on October 20th. Sarasvàti Productions produces a touring show every two years.

– CSF
