The president’s health When then-Mayor Rodrigo Duterte was still campaigning for the presidency, one of his most repeated lines was regarding his health. Then 70 and 71 (he celebrated his birthday in the campaign trail), questions about how fit he was for the presidency hounded him, but he always answered these candidly. “Look, I am 70,” he would say. “Ask your lolo or your lola. Whatever their ailment is, that’s what I have also.” Add to this his disclosure that he has a spinal injury caused by a motorcycle accident, which is literally a pain in the neck. “That’s the reason why you see me pushing my neck even in public, even when I’m talking… I’m just to… to lessen the pressure,” he said in an interview. These days, however, the rumours have been getting more and more heated, especially with his disclosure a few weeks ago that he had undergone an endoscopy and colonoscopy on the advice of his doctors. That the tests proved negative do not seem to stop the rumours. The health of the president – any president – has and will always be a matter of national significance. This is a given, and in fact it has a constitutional basis. Section 12 of Article VII says: In case of serious illness of the President, the public shall be informed of the state of his health. The members of the Cabinet in charge of national security and foreign relations and the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the

Philippines, shall not be denied access to the President during such illness. It is thus understandable that any sign of illness on the part of President Duterte attracts almost rabid attention. An absence here, a darkening of the face there, an unscheduled medical check-up – these are all enough to create a circus of comments and even calls for his resignation. It doesn’t help that during the campaign it was easy to misinterpret his speeches and conclude that he had cancer. He would begin by talking about his former wife Elizabeth, and then wander off to other topics. Many minutes later, he would return to Elizabeth, but by that time he had already dropped her name and so the audience would hear him say, “I have cancer.” I think this helped fuel rumours about his health. To be fair, all presidents go through this kind of scrutiny. It is, after all, a matter of national security: the order of succession in the Philippines is a fragile concept because of the unfortunate fact that most tandems for the two highest positions in the country are adversarial. The president and vice president have almost invariably come from opposite political parties, giving rise to the possibility that if a president leaves his or her post, the entire government would be changed. This is the case now where the vice president belongs to the opposition; if Leni Robredo

succeeds Duterte, she would almost certainly appoint new officials to all the departments and agencies of government. And so the national fascination for the president’s health continues, but we need to temper this with reality. In the past few weeks Mr. Duterte did admit to having gone through a medical check-up, but it was quickly followed by a flurry of activities that he attended personally. Then, too, he was shown in a series of online posts by Special Assistant to the President, Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go enjoying a break in Hong Kong with his

family. He also made a trip to Bali, Indonesia for a leaders’ summit and was even caught in the earthquake there that killed at least three people. These are certainly not the activities of a person who is on the brink of death. How does a lender decide to lend? by Tim St Vincent People often want to improve their credit score prior to getting a big loan. Maybe they want help with renovations, a car purchase, a line of credit, or that big purchase we all dream of – and are a little scared of – a house. Just how does a lender decide if they are going to lend you money? Yes, your credit score is a part of that decision, and a very important part, but there are many other factors that they look at as well. Let’s chat about them a bit. Lenders also look at the Five C’s of credit, debt ratios and, of course, your credit score. The Five C’s of Credit Character When lenders evaluate character, they look at stability – for example, how long you’ve lived at your current address, how long you’ve been in your current job, and whether you have a good record of paying your bills. If you

want a loan for your business, the lender may consider your experience and track record in your business. It certainly never hurts for your lender to know you well as a person. Capacity Capacity looks at how much total debt the lender thinks you can manage, and how much of that debt you’ve already taken on. For example, if they think the maximum debt you can handle is $100,000 and you already have $40,000 of debt, then you are at 40% of your capacity. This measure looks at your debts and expenses to determine your likelihood of repaying new debt. Creditors evaluate your debt-toincome ratio, that is, how much you owe compared to how much you earn. The lower your ratio, the more confident they are in your capacity to repay new debt. Capital Capital refers to your net worth

– the value of your assets (what you own) minus your liabilities (what you owe). Your assets can include things like your car, house, cash, and investments. From this they subtract how much you owe on these and others debts. Collateral Collateral refers to any asset (possession) of a borrower, for example, a home, that a lender has a right to take ownership of and use to pay the debt if the borrower is unable to make payments as agreed. This is called a secured loan, as the loan is “secured” by the asset (typically the item purchased, but not always). By securing the loan with the asset, the lender has the right to take the asset away should the borrower become late in making payments. It is like having a tiny, invisible magical string connected to the secured asset; if you get behind in making payments the lender has the right to pull on this invisible string and take the secured asset away. If we are talking about a car this is called repossession, if

we are talking about a house, this is called foreclosure. In each case, the asset (car or house) was used to secure the loan with a promise. The promise being: “If I don’t pay, you can take it away.” Conditions Lenders consider a number of outside factors beyond the borrower’s control that may affect their ability to repay. For example, what’s happening in the local economy. If the borrower is a business, the lender may evaluate the financial health of the borrower’s industry, their local market, and competition. If interest rates are high overall, what impact does this have on the borrower’s business? Are the markets in a tailspin and are lenders generally in a mood where they don’t want to take on a lot of risk through lending? Some lenders may require a guarantor in addition to collateral. A guarantor means that another person signs a document promising to repay the loan if you can’t. In addition to the Five C’s, See MONEY p7

OCTOBER 16 - 31, 2018

The “Special Manitoba Garment Worker Scheme” of 1968 On September 8, 2018, Winnipeg celebrated the 50th anniversary of Filipino garment workers in Canada, the first batch having arrived on October 1, 1968. In that same year, under a joint industry and government undertaking, hundreds of Filipinos were granted immigration visas to Canada to work in Winnipeg’s burgeoning garment industry. Beginning in the late 1960s, the garment industry in Winnipeg was rapidly expanding and was experiencing chronic labour shortages. While Montréal and Toronto had 39,864 and 15,047 people respectively employed in the garment industry in 1966, Winnipeg had 5,200; however, Winnipeg’s labour shortage was nearly equal to Toronto. The labour demands meant that sewing machines were sitting empty, patterns were not cut, and output was not close to matching demand. Industry leaders estimated in July 1968 that the job demand for Winnipeg’s garment factories was in the hundreds, and that the demand would only continue to grow. Winnipeg-based companies like Peerless Garments and Silpit Industries reported to the Canadian government that domestic and international orders were in danger of being unfilled, which would lead to cancelled future contracts. Peerless claimed to be losing $250,000 a year in lost export orders; Silpit claimed to be losing about one-million dollars in exports to the U.S., and twomillion dollars lost to domestic sales, as orders could not be filled. The garment industry in Manitoba historically had relied upon immigrant labour to operate, largely due to a lack of local interest due to low wages and poor working conditions. Over the five years following the first movement

of garment workers in 1968, thousands of Filipinos immigrated to Winnipeg and surrounding communities to staff the garment industry. These movements were foundational in the development of the Winnipeg Filipino community, which was still about a decade old. Previous to the garment workers, the community had a high concentration of medical professionals who, similar to the garment workers, were sponsored by the government to work in Winnipeg hospitals that were facing an acute labour shortage. This group of garment workers grew rapidly, increasing the population of Winnipeg’s Filipinos and changing the class structure of the community. For a few years, leaders in the community had difficulty engaging this community. During the 1980 election for the Philippine Association of Manitoba executive board, the leadership was criticized for not including the “sleeping giant” Winnipeg’s garment workers - in its organization. The move of Filipinos in 1968 was also part of a more general shift in Canada’s source of immigrants. Following the Second World War, Canada heavily recruited refugees and other displaced persons as an affordable labour source for Canada’s growing post-war economy, including the garment industry. However, by the late 1960s, such recruitment programs were becoming increasingly difficult. In 1967, 293 female garment workers were recruited in Italy; a year after their immigration, though, more than half had left the industry due to poor working conditions and low pay. In 1968, Canadian officials in Italy reported a poor level of interest in working in the garment industry, sparking

industry leaders in Winnipeg to look elsewhere for labour. With the liberalizing of immigration rules in 1967 – especially the removal of overtly racist restrictions on Asian immigration – industry leaders looked to Japan and South Korea for workers, however the prospects for recruiting from these countries were also poor. In April 1966, an unnamed Filipino doctor who had immigrated to Winnipeg approached the Young Ideas garment company to suggest the recruitment of garment workers from the Philippines. As traditional labour sources by 1967 were no longer yielding the labour sources needed, government and industry leaders were willing to explore the Philippines as a potential source. The first Philippine garment recruitment program, the “Special Manitoba Garment Worker Scheme,” had the support of Manitoba government officials and the garment industry, with the federal government having significant hesitancy in the program. On July 22, 1968, the president of Silpit Industries, D. S. Kaufman, outlined to the federal government the labour needs of the garment industry in Manitoba and proposed remedies to the shortage. Mr. Kaufman recommended that representatives of the Manitoba government and the garment industry travel to Manila to interview, screen, and recruit potential workers. With offers of employment, they would then be forwarded to the Canadian government who would vet their applications and grant immigration visas. The proposed timeline was tight, with Kaufman suggesting the tour take place from August 1-23, beginning just a week after the letter was written. The industry was careful to take care of as much as possible to avoid utilizing the resources of the Canadian consulate in Manila, which was already over-worked. This included testing potential workers on sewing machines that had been rented in Manila, and conducting the necessary medical testing for applicants. Workers who were granted entry into Canada would be forwarded a relocation loan of $120, which was to be written off over a twenty-four month period, granted that the worker remained with the company. The whole plan

seemed ambitious, and even a bit audacious, but nevertheless the first group of Filipino garment workers arrived in Winnipeg on October 1, 1968, abroad CPA flight 002. While the federal government eventually approved the recruitment scheme, they did so uneasily. They were, on the one hand, reluctant to give too much assistance to an industry that they felt was too reliant upon immigrant labour to fill labour shortages, rather than cultivating local talent. Government officials charged that immigrant labour prevented the industry from improving its working conditions and wages, the main deterrent to local labour sources. On the other hand, though, there remained apprehension at the sharp influx of Filipino immigrants. While immigration policies had been reformed and racism reportedly removed from the process, there remained significant worry among government officials at the effects of a large nonwhite population would have in Winnipeg. In particular, officials expressed fear of “single girls” who would most likely sponsor their family members, who, it was feared, would be unskilled. The fear, which revealed lingering racist views in Canadian immigration, was expressed in a report by the Canadian ConsulateGeneral in Manila who reminded officials that “most Filipino families are very large. A family of twelve is not unusual here [in the Philippines].” The recruitment scheme was deemed successful by government and industry leaders, although it was not without its own peculiarities. The representative of the garment industry in the program, Meyer Klapman, arrived in Manila on Monday, August 26 and immediately reduced the number of workers that they claimed were so desperately needed. In spite of the frustration this created in the federal government, the interviewing and testing went off smoothly until the following Friday, August 30, when Klapman abruptly abandoned the interviews at 10:00 a.m., leaving about 40 to 50 applicants waiting in the room. No explanation for his sudden departure was ever received, and government officials reported that Klapman had been

spotted sightseeing in Tokyo over the weekend. In spite of the success of the program in recruiting needed Filipino garment workers, the federal government expressed many concerns. In addition to Meyer Klapman’s bizarre behaviour, the Consulate-General expressed concern over the high costs for Filipinos to secure government documentation in their applications. Not only were these individuals susceptible to shady moneylenders, but those who had been abandoned by Klapman on August 30 were now out of all the money they had spent. It was feared that, in some cases, visas would not be finalized, as applicants were unable to secure all required documentation. In addition to costs estimated around ₱300, items for life in Winnipeg, such as winter clothing, were necessary, meaning that many immigrants would arrive in Canada already indebted. Those who could not afford to finalize their immigration might find themselves in tight positions, as many were losing their jobs in Manila when it was discovered they had applied for immigration. In spite of these concerns, however, the movement of garment workers continued in earnest over the next few years. The industry in Winnipeg was particularly impressed with the work of Filipinos so that when news was received that Bergaus N. V., a major garment company in the Netherlands, was closing its plant in Ulft, displacing hundreds of Filipino workers, government and industry jumped at the opportunity to recruit them in the early 1970s. The labour demands of the industry were never resolved by Filipino immigration; like their Italian counterparts in 1967, many Filipinos left the industry after a year or two for other industries. The demands on the industry did not resolve until more and more labour was sourced outside of Canada. Although many factories remained open in Winnipeg, and Filipinos continued to work in these plants, the fervour of the late 1960s and 1970s dissipated. The movement of garment workers into Winnipeg marked an important phase in the Filipino community as these workers changed the class dynamic. Many of these workers did sponsor their families – as the federal government initially feared – and most would agree now that this was for the better of Winnipeg and for Canada. Those garment workers who came during this time were laying the foundations for future movements of Filipinos as family sponsorship reunited families in Winnipeg. Talking to your kids about... Dear Ate Anna: I have a very hard time talking to my children about bodies and relationships. I just don’t know what to say. If they learn about these things in school, do I still need to talk to them about it? A reader Dear Reader: Thank you for your email, and for reaching out with your concern. Parenting is never easy! Children in the Manitoba school system are taught about bodies, relationships and sexuality. They begin learning about it in elementary school with topics such as body parts and privacy, and continue to learn through high school about relationships, pregnancy, and other topics such as sexually transmitted infections. Even though the school curriculum covers these topics in class, it is still important to talk with your children about bodies, relationships and sexuality. A new study in the Journal of Adolescent Health finds that the stronger the communication is between parents and their

children about sexuality, the more likely the children are to practice safer sex when they are older. The more information and support young people feel they have from their parents about their dating relationships, the more comfortable they are to ask questions, and the more equipped they are to make good choices about their body. I know it can feel very hard talking to your children about sex and bodies. Just like other things in life, the more you practice, the more comfortable you become. Each time you talk with your child about sex and sexuality, the easier it will be. Don’t worry about feeling embarrassed. Try to show your child that bodies and relationships are normal and healthy things to talk about together. When your children are very young, you can talk with them about consent and privacy. You can let them know that every person has a body, all bodies look different, and all bodies deserve respect and care. As they grow, you can talk about healthy

MONEY... From page 4 there are many ratios that lenders look at when making a lending decision. One of the most common is the “debt service ratio.” In this ratio your total monthly debt payments (housing and all other debt payments) are divided by your gross family income (before taxes and other deductions). The goal here is to see what percentage of your income is consumed by your debt. Depending on which financial institution you go to and what you are looking to borrow for, they like to see you anywhere within a range of 33 per cent to 40 percent of income consumed by debt. The lower the percentage the better. Finally, there is your credit score. We have chatted about that in several past articles and will again in the future, for now I will just leave it with saying that the closer your score is to 900, the better. As you can see, the decision to lend money has a lot more behind it than just the credit score, though that is a key component. If you are going to apply for a loan, it is important to understand all the factors that go into the lending decision, and to do your best to make sure those factors are in your

favour. Tim St Vincent is a retired CFP and is a Certified Educator in Personal Finance with the Credit Counselling Society, a non-profit organization. relationships, how to care for their bodies, and how to stay safe online and at school. When your kids get to an age where they start to date, you can provide them information on local teen clinics, healthy communication, and you can also talk to them about pregnancy prevention and making good choices for themselves and their bodies. Thank you again for your e-mail. Be gentle with yourself, and brave also. Remember, each time you talk to your kids about sexuality and bodies, it will get easier! Twenty years of the MPNP

Do you remember a time when there was no Manitoba Provincial Nominee Programme (MPNP)? It is hard to imagine. At one time members of the local Filipino community would travel to the airport to greet whoever was arriving. Today families travel to the airport daily to greet friends and family members, many from the Philippines. The local expatriate community has benefitted greatly but so has Manitoba and by extension Canada. Let us take this time to wish the MPNP a well-deserved “thank you” for 20 years of operation and 20 years of bringing newcomers to Manitoba from around the world. Manitoba was the first of the provinces to enter into an agreement with Canada to participate in the selection of skilled immigrant applicants for the provincial economy. Since 1998 over 130,000 newcomers have come to the province under the program, not counting those family members subsequently sponsored to the province. The MPNP was created “to provide Manitoba with a mechanism to increase the economic benefit of immigration to Manitoba based on industrial and economic

priorities and labour market conditions,” – Manitoba PNP Annex 1998. The other provinces and territories have followed the lead of Manitoba and now have their PNP’s. The only province without a PNP is Quebec who have a separate immigration agreement with Canada. The MPNP has provided us with a timeline of the program with some of the major accomplishments and changes listed: 1996 – The Canada-Manitoba Immigration Agreement is signed, leading to creation of the MPNP; 1997 – Manitoba launches a successful pilot program, the Winkler Initiative, which increases immigration to rural Manitoba; 1998 – Manitoba signs a PNP Annex, which establishes Canada’s first PNP; 1999 – The first 418 provincial nominees land in Manitoba; 2008 – Manitoba introduces the Worker Recruitment and Protection Act to protect foreign workers. It is the first province to implement such an act; 2014 – The 100,000th provincial nominee arrives in the province;

2017 – The MPNP nominates 2,713 applicants with job offers, accounting for 54% of the PN yearly total; 2018 – The MPNP renews program criteria to improve immigrant outcomes. The MPNP has been a driving force in population growth since 1998. There has been a net positive population growth since 2006. Over the past 20 years some of the major accomplishments of the MPNP are: 130,000 PNs have landed since 1998; almost 90 per cent of landed PNs continue to make Manitoba their home; over 90 per cent of economic immigration to the province comes through the MPNP; over $308 million has been invested in Manitoba by the MPNP business

nominees; and over 90 per cent of landed PNs are employed within the first year of arrival. The renewed MPNP continues to contribute to the demographic growth and economic health of the province. Since the overhaul of MPNP in November 2017, the program has been increasing its interaction with the federal Express Entry program. The Manitoba Express Entry Stream allows the province to nominate eligible candidates with strong connections to the province, and work in an occupation on the province’s In-Demand Occupations list. The MPNP has now issued 1,155 invitations to apply (ITA) to persons who registered online Expressions of Interest (EOI) since January 2018. The program is healthy

and productive in terms of its activity. Manitoba, as a province, continues to benefit from the MPNP. The MPNP has a positive impact on immigration numbers and the program continues to provide needed workers for the provincial economy. After 20 years of operation, the MPNP it is still a win for all parties concerned. What is in your purse? Feng shui wealth producing tips for handbags It’s an indispensable tool, a valuable fashion asset and a source of all manner of important things like breath mints, a safety pin to fix a broken zipper, or keys to entertain a toddler. A woman’s purse is a collector of things – and sometimes those things are downright unhealthy. According to recent studies, a woman’s purse ranks as one of the top ten germiest items we come in contact with on a regular basis. Ironically, a woman’s handbag is also the place where she carries her wealth and financial power. Is your purse a symbol of wealth or is it a danger to your health? Maybe it’s a little of both. Interestingly, for women, a purse is often a symbol of themselves. An attractive, organized purse makes us feel better and more in control of our lives. When our

purse is a mess and we can’t find anything, we feel lost and our bank accounts often reflect that scattered state. Simply put, a purse with good feng shui is a purse that is organized, a handy resource, and supports its principal purpose: holding your money and financial wherewithal. Read these tips to get your purse in tip top feng shui shape — and make you more prosperous.
 1. Elevate your purse – You’d never see a man put his wallet on the floor, yet women put their purses on the floor all the time – in the restroom, at restaurants, at work. Always keep your purse elevated and off the floor. And never, ever, put it on the floor of the restroom. Hang it on a door hinge or the corner of the door. A great idea is to buy a purse hanger for those times when you want to

put your purse down, but not on a floor. 2. Keep it clean – Resist the temptation to throw gum or food wrappers, bits of paper or used tissues into your purse. What does it say when you carry trash in the same place as your money? Garbage should go in a trashcan and never into your purse. 3. Mind the change – Avoid throwing change into your purse where it will fall to the bottom of the bag. This is disrespectful to money. If it’s too inconvenient to put change into a zippered coin compartment in your wallet, buy an old fashioned coin purse that makes collecting change easy – and getting it out for tolls or parking meters convenient, too. 4. Be prepared – Carry a small safety pin, a tiny container of dental floss, and a small notepad with pen, a small pocketknife, highlighter pen and bottle of eye drops. Little items that make your

purse a point of refuge in the world make you love your purse even more. Better still, when someone has a broken zipper they will forever remember you and your purse of wonders. Lastly, carry a $100 bill, but don’t spend it. Having a purse (and some cash) at the ready helps you be prepared for financial surprises. 5. Activate your purse – If you see auspicious purse charms or tassels, put some of these on your purse. These hangers are great for pumping up the feng shui volume of your purse and activating it for wealth. Choose hangers that appeal to you and that look especially pretty and coordinated. Yes, pretty is good feng shui. 6. Buy thoughtfully – Like a bra, never buy a purse just for the fashion name or for how it looks. Make sure the purse hangs on your shoulder comfortably, and like a good bra, stays there. Even better, find a purse with enough compartments to hold small items like pens, your cell phone, and other items you need to get to quickly. Make sure you can easily close your purse for security sake, that you can find what you need and that the purse is working for you, not the other way around. 7. Use a key keeper – These small hooks fit onto your purse and keep you from fishing around for your keys, which can endanger you if you’re trying to find them at night in an empty parking lot. By hanging on the edge of your purse, you can access your keys faster and more easily. This says you can find your way financially too — and get where you’re going faster. 8. Avoid wallet clutter – Get a wallet that helps you stay organized with your money. Your money should be easily arranged, not rammed into a wad, and your credit cards should be easily accessible. Also, have only as many credit cards as you absolutely need. Too many credit cards become a financial trap, a credit score nightmare, and, well, clutter. When the clerks ask if you want one of the store-name-credit cards, tell them “No thanks; I’m cutting down on wallet clutter.”

Who can argue with that? Lastly, make sure your wallet has more room for money and less space for credit cards. 9. Choose your wealth colour – Selecting a purse in a colour that resonates with your personal wealth energy will help stimulate your wealth and moneymaking opportunities. If you don’t want to buy a purse in your personal wealth colours, other good options include red, metallic, white, black, and blue. 10. Pursue love – What is the No. 1 feng shui rule for your purse? Don’t buy it unless you absolutely love it – and then treat it that way. Keep it clean, organized, and off the floor. Your money mojo will be activated and you’ll have more to spend and save. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I love to read about the handbag colours for the year and try to encourage my husband to choose an energetic colour, but men’s wallet choices are pretty limited between brown and black. Is there anything I can do to activate his wallet? Answer: Absolutely! You’re right about men’s wallet colours – they are pretty limited. Even if they had them in an array of colours, I can’t imagine my husband whipping out his gold or red wallet without complete shame. But, even so, there is something your husband can do. He can put a red piece of paper in his wallet; I usually recommend putting it behind your driver’s license. Or, he can add a three-tie coin to his wallet to activate it and promote growth. “A few days before her concert, e, hindi siya mapakali.

Cindy Gilroy seeks re-election in Daniel McIntyre Cindy is seeking re-election in Daniel McIntyre ward because she wants to build on the progress that council has made over the last four years. After years of tax freezes and service cuts resulting in streets, sidewalks and lanes in disrepair, this council is addressing this issue and moving forward on many fronts. Cindy grew up in Daniel McIntyre she has always been active in the community and she is raising her family here now. Cindy played ringette at Orioles and speed skated at what is now the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex. She graduated from Tec-Voc and she attended the

University of Winnipeg. Prior to running for council Cindy was a School Trustee. As a councillor Cindy has worked on issues such as improved accountability, upgraded community facilities, and improved city services, especially fixing our deteriorating streets, sidewalks and lanes. Safety and poverty have been and will continue to be a top priority for her. She hosts regular Conversations with the Councillor at the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex and highlights community involvement on her website and in social media. Councillor expenses are now

posted on the city website and her annual newsletter highlights community grants and events. Working together with you, several community facilities have been upgraded and we are seeing continuous improvements in the 311 service. As Chair of the UN Safe Cities Committee, The Citizens Equity Committee, The Cities Innovation Committee and as a member of the Executive Policy Committee, she has been able to influence decision making. Working together is getting results but there is much more she wants to do. Although increased investments in streets, sidewalks and lanes has made things better for some, we need a

strong budget commitment to continue and she is asking for your support to push for it. Her priorities will continue to be working with you for improved infrastructure, community safety, good community facilities and improved city services, particularly in the area of transportation. She will be working on helping cars and cyclists exist safely together and advocating for a low-income bus pass. Over the last term, Cindy demonstrated that working together works, and we have made progress. She is asking for your continued support to keep that progress happening.

CRISTY... From page 15 Kris Aquino.

Estrada na talaga, because I am my father’s son!”

*** Mgandang magbuwenamano sina Romnick Sarmenta at Harlene Bautista. I had heard that the playwright was from Toronto, and that the play is based on her mother’s immigration to Canada. The performance of Purificacion “Puring” Saberon (Dutchess Cayetano) and Indepencia “Penny” Uy (Stephanie Sy) was truly inspired. I can’t tell you how affirming and important it was for me to hear a Filipino accent on stage played by Filipinos, portraying Filipinos. As children we grow up hearing English and Tagalog dance together on the lips of our parents, grandparents, and other family members, but rarely on TV or in movies. Prairie Nurse reclaims the Pinoy accent to help tell a tale of immigration, friendship, true love, and a number of really great jokes. While Winnipeggers have embraced Filipinos and Philippine culture, many of them may not know how or why there are so many of us here in this region of Canada. Prairie Nurse

and make sure all of our future contributions to society are known for generations to come. The success of a play like Prairie Nurse reminds me that the rest of the world is finally ready to see us write our own stories and play our own parts. We are here and ready to take centre stage. Prairie Nurse is playing at Prairie Theatre Exchange until October 21st.

When I was seven years old, I saw a Pinay on TV for the first time. It was during an episode of Barney. In 1992, during the show’s third season, they introduced a character named “Min.” It was the nickname my family had given me, and I had never seen anyone with the same name. I remember purposely watching all the way to the credits so that I could see my name written in them. She talked about how her family was from the Philippines, and in one episode she even sang the Tagalog birthday song, Maligayang Bati. Barney’s Min was a made up character, but it didn’t matter because the inclusion of her story told me it was cool to share the songs and stories of my culture. Representation matters and sharing Filipino stories in the present will create the knowledge, wisdom, and interest needed to keep them relevant in the future. When I heard that Marie Beath Badian’s Prairie Nurse would be at Prairie Theatre Exchange, I

successfully shines a spotlight on the how and why for many who came as healthcare professionals during that time. On the preview night of Prairie Nurse, I sat in an audience of mainly non-Filipinos. We sat in the same room, laughed at most of the same jokes, and became “super-kilig” at all the same parts. During the intermission, Tagalog love songs from the 1960s were played over the speakers. While most audience members could not understand the lyrics or remember them as songs from their youth, it meant a lot to know that there were a handful of people near me who could. The ANAK family all came to the show together. We brought our moms, along with a handful of other members in our community, many of whom immigrated to Winnipeg during the time when the play was set. We must always tell our stories. No matter what the medium, we must continue to spread the deep wisdom of our culture and experiences, and continue to retrace the steps of the people who paved the way for us. In doing this, we secure our place in Canadian history

Ackerman. There are about 750,000 voters.

May independent but political and/or seniority, para manumbalik na independent institution ang Supreme Court. Si Associate Justice Antonio Carpio na pinaka-senior Associate Justice ang nakatagang acting CJ ng Korte Suprema. Kasama siya sa listahan ng apat pang senior associate justices, nominated by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) na sina Diosdado Peralta, Lucas Bersamin, Mariano del Castillo and Estela Perlas-Bernabe.

CRISTY... From page 19 pakikipaglaban.

Si VP Leni Robredo as their Chairperson at Sen. *** Ang resulta ng mid-term elections will define the leadership of president Duterte. Ang whereabouts of the Comelec chairman noon, hanggang ngayon

Bakit kaya? Pag-isipan mo ito. Good days ang ika-17, 18, 26 at 27.

Libra (Sept.

Magrelax.

Ayaw mo iyon. OK mo ang ika-21, 22, 23 at 31. Ingat sa ika-17, 18, 24 at 25.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Marami kang bagong kaibigan ngayon.

niya laban kina Ces Drilon at Marie Lozano at isa pa nilang kasamahan.

– CSF
