One of the things I never got used to when I worked for a year in Metro Manila in 2017 and 2018 was the daily grind of commuting to and from the office. My first job there was in Malacañang, a mere 10 kilometers from our home in Malabon, but the trip would take me at least one-and-a-half hours using public transport – two jeepneys and one Light Rail Transit (LRT) ride. On many days I would resort to using ride-sharing services like Uber and Grab, but I couldn’t do that too often because it was very expensive. Besides, sometimes the traffic would be so bad that it would take just as long in the Uber as on public transport. What I noticed – and what broke my heart – was the look on the faces of other people who were with me in the jeepney and LRT. Most had that resigned, weary look that said they were also having a rough time on the road and would rather have spent the hour or so with family and loved ones. In the morning none of us would have had the luxury of spending a nice breakfast with family because we all had to rush out to be able to make it to work on time. In the late afternoon or

PILIPINO EXPRESS

night we were resigned to the fact that it would be well past a decent dinnertime when we would get home. For me it was the minimum three hours spent on the road that made me decide to move back to Davao City when the first opportunity came. It wasn’t the loss of productivity that bothered me but the fact that I could have spent those hours in activities that I loved. Even going out on weekends was stressful because traffic was still heavy on Saturdays, and on Sundays the thought of having to commute to work the following day lay heavy in my head. I haven’t been back to Manila for a few months now but I understand from friends and from the news that the traffic situation is getting worse. Some call it a transport crisis, to include not just the traffic jams but the overall difficulty in getting a ride at almost all hours of the day. Malacañang balks at calling it a crisis, saying if people can still get a ride then that means it’s only a “problem.” A transport crisis, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said, is when vehicles do not move

OCTOBER 16 - 31, 2019

Transport, traffic, and toxic politics and people can no longer get a ride on public transport. It’s all semantics, of course. The reality is that Panelo, accepting a dare from critics, took four hours to get to Malacañang from his home in New Manila on Friday morning. That may have been because he wasn’t used to being a commuter anymore, but even if you halve that time, it would still have taken him two hours to get to work. If that’s not a crisis, I don’t know what is. But I also think it is not fair to blame Malacañang solely for the current situation. After all, President Duterte had said during the campaign in 2016 that it would take emergency powers for a sitting President to solve the transport and traffic problem in Metro Manila. And in fact, he did ask Congress for such powers when he won – only to be rebuffed by some whose only thought was that he would misuse it for his own gain. Say what you want about Duterte, but the one true thing about him is that he hates corruption to the core and would

not have allowed any misuse of public funds to solve the Metro’s problem. And indeed, Senator Grace Poe has of late hinted that emergency powers are needed and said it would be approved by the Senate on certain conditions. Duterte, however, has already given up because there are less than three years in his term. It was difficult enough to solve the problem in a full six-year term; three years would be impossible even with emergency powers. He would only end up being blamed for not being able to make traffic bearable for everyone. Meanwhile, the people must continue bearing the burden of a gruelling daily commute – all because of toxic politics. Global perception of mental health For those of you who recall, World Mental Health Day was celebrated last October 10th. The day was first observed on October 10, 1992, started by the World Federation for Mental Health. World Mental Health Day is now an annual commemorative event across the globe. The event celebrates mental health awareness and aims to engage and challenge everyone to have discussions regarding mental health and the actions that need to be taken to tackle the crisis. To do my own bit to participate in the awareness, I took the opportunity to attend a presentation hosted by the Conference Board of Canada on October 10, 2019. The presentation shared some insights from the 2019 Mental Health Workplace Study by Teladoc Health. Teladoc Health deployed a study through Ipsos MORI across four countries with 1,000 people interviewed in United States, 1,000 participants in United Kingdom, 964 participants in Canada, and 930 participants in Australia. All participants were between the ages of 18 and 65 in full-time or part-time employment. There

were a total of 3,894 participants interviewed. I must say, much of the statistics shared in the presentation were quite concerning. Out of all the participants surveyed, a fairly large percentage of 18 to 25 year olds are impacted by mental health challenges like burnout, anxiety and absenteeism caused by mental and emotional stressors. However, the most troubling finding is that one in three respondents who experienced a mental health challenge did not seek help. Why, you may ask? According to the study, respondents from around the world feel that stigma plays a significant part in whether they discuss their mental health needs in the workplace. The study reported that 82 per cent of employees diagnosed with a mental health issue did not confide in anyone at work regarding their concern. While this number is quite disturbing, 50 per cent of the respondents feel that if their team leaders or managers are more open to discussing mental health in the workplace, they would feel more comfortable to talk about their own mental health. It appears that when the workplace is open

to discussions, the stigma about mental health appears to diminish as well. From a real-world standpoint, many people have mental health concerns from time to time, but those concerns may turn into a mental illness when signs and symptoms progress to a point where they affect a person’s ability to function. Some signs of mental un-wellness include: decline in personal hygiene; negative thoughts; low energy; withdrawal from people and activities; mood changes; and changes in behaviour, to name a few. How can you help? In the workplace context, it is very important to listen and acknowledge the person confiding in you in order to remove some of the stigma around mental health. It takes a lot of courage for a person struggling with mental health concerns to come forward and tell someone what they are experiencing. In general, most employers offer an Employee Assistance Program and certainly that is something that employees

should be encouraged to access when they are dealing with some type of a mental health concern. While the numbers shared in the Teladoc study are unsettling, it is eye opening to learn that mental health is a global concern with real obstacles that teach us to be more willing to talk about it to help break the stigma around the issue. Condoms and the birth control pill Dear Ate Anna, I am afraid of getting a sexually transmitted infection, but I feel embarrassed to talk about condoms. I am using the birth control pill – does that mean I am protected from STIs as well as pregnancy? A Reader Dear Reader, I am very glad you asked this question. There is a lot of misunderstanding about birth control! Birth control pills can protect you from pregnancy risk (if used correctly), but they do not protect from sexually transmitted infections. There are supplies you can use with your birth control pills to protect yourself from STIs. Barriers, such as condoms, act as a wall to keep sperm away from entering the vaginal area. If used correctly, condoms strongly

decrease the chances transmitting STIs. There are two different types of condoms that you can use. One is an external condom. This is the condom most people are aware of, which fits over a penis. Internal condoms are also available – sometimes called female condoms. This condom fits inside the vagina and, when used correctly, provides a barrier between the body fluids of sexual partners. Both of these methods, if used correctly, protect against STIs and pregnancy. It is helpful to know that you can use both a hormonal form of birth control, like a birth control pill, and also use a condom. If used correctly, then you are protected from both STIs and pregnancy. It is also important to know that you should not use two condoms at the same time - this increases the chances of condoms breaking.

If something happens and you think the condom may have failed or have been used incorrectly, emergency contraception is available. This is a pill that you can take as soon as possible – up to five days after the sex act – to prevent pregnancy from occurring. These can be bought from any pharmacy and costs vary, but are usually around $15 to $30 in Manitoba. If you cannot afford this, a community health centre may be able to provide this at a lower cost. Ate Anna understands the subject of condom use may be uncomfortable to talk about, but your health is very important. I suggest talking about condom use beforehand, when things are calm and you have time to talk. Being clear to yourself and

to your partner about what you need and why you need it is very helpful. You might want to start a conversation by saying something like, “It is important to me that we use condoms because I want to take care of my body.” This can be a good start to the conversation about what you both want and need from each other in your relationship.

All the best to you, Ate Anna Ate Anna welcomes your questions and comments. Please write to: Ate Anna, Suite 200-226 Osborne St. N., Winnipeg, MB R3C 1V4 or e-mail: info@serc.mb.ca. Visit us at www.serc.mb.ca for reliable information and links on the subject of sexuality.

Do you want a return to Harper style immigration in Canada? Elections, slogans, and promises have become our daily reality. We have just finished with the provincial election and entered into a federal election. If you are tired of the endless promises and character assassination, you have a lot of company. My message to the reader is to stop for one moment and consider the issues of the campaign. A good friend and neighbour asked me to support her candidate who she assured me is a person of good character and reputation. I explained that my vote is not based on the personality of the candidate, nor the zeal in which he attacks the character of his opponent, but rather on their outlook on immigration. I confess that I have little patience with extremists such as Maxime Bernier and his antiimmigration polemics. Like his role model south of the border, most Canadians do not agree with being openly anti-immigration and using slogans such as “Make America (or Canada) Great Again” when they really appear to mean make “Make America White Again.” For the purposes of this article I shall focus on the incumbent Liberal government and the leading opposition Conservative party. Let us consider the recent history of both parties, Trudeau’s Liberals and Harper’s Conservatives, on the issue of immigration. Andrew Scheer has spent a good deal of money and energy attacking the character of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He has also presented, in outline, his immigration position. His intention is to “restore, fairness, order, and compassion to the immigration system.” He compares the Liberals’ failure to the success of the previous Harper government. His platform includes restoration of integrity, an end to illegal border crossing, set immigration levels consistent with Canada’s best interests, standing

up for the reunification of families, prioritizing people who face true persecution, improving credential recognition, work to reunite survivors of genocide, restore the Office of Religious Freedom and promotion of private sponsorship of refugees. My first reaction is that Andrew Scheer is long on promises and includes items that both previous Liberal and Conservative governments have adhered to. But he has not answered fundamental questions. The bureaucrats or line officers who enforce government policies are the same people as before and their due diligence in screening refugee claimants has not been compromised or lowered. The Conservatives really want a referendum on the number of refugees admitted to Canada. You need to ask yourself if this is compassion. How have the Liberals fared with refugee resettlement and amnesty for those in fear for your safety and lives? Did you know that refugee resettlement is part of Canada’s international responsibilities? It is included as one of the objectives of the immigration Act (IRPA). It is also much smaller in number than economic immigration and family class immigration, which brings in many more thousands of newcomers. Canada is a signatory to international agreements dealing with the resettlement of refugees and the concern for others is one of the fundamentals of major faith groups and the golden rule. However, this message has been twisted by politicians such as Donald Trump whose message is to limit immigration to the United States, especially for persons who are not white, and change “love thy neighbour as thyself” into charity begins and ends at home. We can measure some of the immigration changes brought in by the Liberals under Trudeau

with changes of practices brought in by the previous Conservative government of Stephen Harper. Consider that under the Harper government the citizenship fees were increased from $100 to $530 (plus $100 for Right of Citizenship). The residency requirement was increased to four out of the past six years with no credit for time spent inside the country as a temporary resident. And the skill test was expanded to the ages 14 to 64. The Liberals under Trudeau continued the same fee structure but changed residency to three out of five years, a credit for time spent inside the country under temporary residence and the age requirement for the skill test from 18 to 54. Many will argue that the changes under Harper were intended to limit citizenship applications to the detriment of many because Canadian citizens have rights and protection beyond those of permanent residence. Another change was the sponsorship of parents and grandparents. The sponsorship has continued throughout Conservative and Liberal governments but take good note of the cap on the number of applications. The Conservatives set the cap at 5,000 and over the tenure of Trudeau’s government this number has increased to 20,000. At the last intake in January 2019 the online submissions were closed within 10-15 minutes because the 20,000 number had been reached. This reality underlines the need for a higher cap or a rethink. It is to the credit of the Liberal government and current Minister Hussen that the numbers allowed represent a 400 per cent increase over those under Harper. What about the Live-in Caregiver program, which benefited many newcomer groups in Canada? The program was closed and was recently reopened

with two pilot programs: Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot. Both are open now and invite applications from qualified persons with education, work experience, and English/French language requirements. The initiative appears to address many of the issues experienced in the past, such as abuse by Canadian employers. The current government also changed the age of dependency from under 19 years of age to under 22 years of age. The action restored the age of dependency to what was previously in place and it makes more sense in terms of the objectives of the immigration act to keep dependent children with their families. Another major change has been the two-year pilot that allows qualified applicants to apply for sponsorship of persons who had been excluded from sponsorship because the sponsor did not declare them when they applied for permanent residence. The reader should understand what the Conservatives changed when they were in office and what the Liberals restored, as well as the immigration policies and practices proposed by Conservatives and Liberals. This is the way you have control over who you vote for based on facts. Consider the Conservatives attempts to change tourist citizenship or the right to claim citizenship if the child is born

inside Canada or on a Canadian ship, airplane etc. Do you think this is a major issue and do you agree with the immigrant professionals who want further immigration in their professional field to be limited until they are well employed? It appears that self-interest has replaced the golden rule or the royal commandment to “love thy neighbour as thyself.” We enjoy the right to vote for our government and have a responsibility in selecting those who best represent us. If you are like me and consider immigration a major issue, then do some research and challenge your candidates, regardless of party, on this issue. If they fail to convince you, then vote for someone else. It is easier to judge the government in power but the official opposition Conservatives can be judged by what they did in the past. The Harper government was defeated partly because of their antiimmigration policies and practices. Ask yourself if you want to return to these. ANDREA... From page 1 “It is an absolute dream come true to be sharing an incredible story with audiences across North America. I get to work with a cast and band of empowering women who share the same values as I do and have a calibre of talent that continues to push me to be the best version of myself. The journey to the big Broadway stage has been memorable and it is only the beginning for me. I’m excited to play in the big leagues and continue to inspire people to pursue their dreams and goals no matter who they are and where they come from,” said Andrea when interviewed by Pilipino Express. In the musical, the ex-wives of Henry VIII join forces in a pop concert spectacle, remixing 500 years of historical heartbreak into a celebration of twenty-firstcentury female empowerment. Backed by a band known as the “Ladies in Waiting,” the all-woman ensemble spans the spectrum of modern-day pop with a soundtrack that has hit the top of the UK charts. The musical is a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII presented as a pop concert, as the wives take turns singing and telling their story to see who suffered the most due to Henry and should therefore become the group’s lead singer. After Chicago, Six also had a very successful run at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts from August 24 to September 29, 2019. Daughter of Cesar and Sylvia Macasaet, Andrea is a graduate of the prestigious Canadian College of Performing Arts and has performed frequently onstage at the Winnipeg Studio Theatre in memorable roles, including Heather Duke in Heathers the Musical, Christmas Eve in Avenue Q, and Marcy Park in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. She also starred as Kim in

the Victoria Operatic Society’s production of Miss Saigon. Proud of her Filipino and Winnipeg roots, Andrea has often participated and won major prizes in Filipino produced singing contests like Tuklas Talino and Pinoy Pop Star. She has also been an active member of the Highlights Performing Group, a choral group created and directed by one of her vocal coaches, Joy Lazo. Back in Winnipeg for a few days after the Boston run of Six, Andrea has time to rest and be with her family – and with her friends who are also mostly in the performing arts. “I have watched Andrea compete since she was 10 years old in Tuklas Talino, compete at various singing competitions and perform locally. I am so honoured to be her friend and colleague in this industry. She lent her vocals to my musical project, MaBuhay! Musical, whose mandate is to create opportunities for aspiring Filipino performers in Winnipeg and eventually globally. Andrea is now paving the way for future Filipinos to star in Six and to achieve their performing dreams on Broadway and in the performing arts!” said one of Andrea’s closest friends, Joseph Sevillo, who is also very active in the performing arts scene in Winnipeg. From Winnipeg, Andrea resumes her Anne Boleyn role as Six continues its tour in Edmonton at the Citadel Theatre from November 1 to 24; then to St. Paul, Minnesota at the Ordway Centre for the Performing Arts from November 29 to December 22; then to the Big Apple – at the Brooks Atkins Theatre for the musical’s Broadway debut. Directed by Lucy Moss and Jamie Armitage, the North American production of Six also features Adrianna Hicks as Catherine of Aragon, Abby Mueller as Jane Seymour, Brittney Mack as Anne of Cleves, Samantha Pauly as

Catherine Howard, and Anna Uzele as Catherine Parr. Together with Andrea, they will star in the Broadway show. Six is a British musical by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, first presented by Cambridge University students at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017. It is currently nominated for five Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical after its debut in the UK and its wildly popular run in London’s West End. It has since gone on to professional productions in the West End and been presented internationally. What the critics say about Six: Jesse Green of The New York Times wrote that the musical is “pure entertainment,” the writing is “wickedly smart,” the “terrific singers” of the Chicago cast sell the show “unstintingly,” and the production values “befit a splashy North American premiere with Broadway backing.” In a review of the Chicago production, Chris Jones of The Chicago Tribune praised the show as “dynamic” and a “blast,” with a “sense of humour and spirited radicalism.” Marlow and Moss are “gifted comic writers,” he noted, and he praised the “musical force of the intensely committed and talented actresses” in the Chicago cast. Hedy Weiss of WTTW praises the musical as “sensational,” singling out each performer in the Chicago cast. Weiss also thinks the show makes a convincing case for each character, and in addition to praising the writers, notes the “dynamite direction by Moss and Jamie Armitage, and powerhouse music direction by Roberta Duchak,” as well as “Gabriella Slade’s glittering costumes and Tim Deiling’s arena-style lighting.” Sources: Andrea Macasaet, Joseph Sevillo, Six (musical) Wikipedia; Photos are from Liz Lauren. Feng shui after divorce – How to heal and move on with your life Being married is wonderful when it’s wonderful. But when it’s not, staying married when you’re unhappy can be a certain kind of misery, and divorce can often feel like the only answer. Yet even when a divorce is the best option, there’s still a feeling of loss, disappointment and, many times, failure. And it’s in our homes, and in those despondent feelings, that we can often become stuck.
One of the best aspects of feng shui is the ability to help you cope with loss, trauma, and the emotional turmoil that can naturally occur in life, but that can seem especially painful after divorce. It’s often more difficult to re-adjust after divorce than it is an emotional trauma because a home is a shared space for couples. The house often quite literally symbolizes the couple, making the space around you feel more lonely and filled with hurt – and can keep you feeling frozen and unable to move on.
When your partner in life is gone, your home may feel especially empty, or you may move after divorce and then feel the pain of “singleness” in your new space. No matter whether you stay in the home you shared with your spouse or if you moved on, feng shui can help you heal and begin moving forward again in both your home and your life. Use these tips to create a supportive environment that helps you to let go of the past and move healthfully, happily, and wholly, into the future: 1. See your home in a new way to reset your heart and eyes – In feng shui, just as in love, the heart and eyes are connected. We fall in love with someone through our eyes and the feeling goes straight to our hearts. After divorce, the symbols and items in our homes can be powerful reminders to our eyes of the loss to our hearts. Because you’re starting over, it’s important to help your heart “re-set” itself by taking the visual reminders of our former relationship away or moving them into different areas. Start by taking down all the artwork in your home and moving it into a new position. This will help you re-awaken your eyes and heart to a new way of feeling and seeing again. Take out old photographs of you as a couple so you don’t see your “then” self. Next, go out and take photos of yourself with friends as you are now and put those into frames. 2. It’s important that you see yourself in your new life – Have a friend take candid photos of you doing things you like such as walking your dog, doing yoga, or cooking with friends. Posed photographs can sometimes feel hollow, but when you see yourself in your life doing things you enjoy, it can be very validating of your

new life. 3. Replace old symbols – Just as a house often symbolizes a marriage and the couple who lived there, so can other items, like bedroom furniture, or a favourite chair or desk. Start in the bedroom and consider swapping out bedroom furniture with new replacements. If possible, replace the mattress. The bed is the single most significant symbol of a marital relationship, so the actual bed you slept on should be replaced or changed. At the very least, have the mattress sanitized or bring it outside to spend at least four hours in bright sunlight. If you can’t replace the bedroom furniture, try repainting it or swapping out lamps and accessories with something new. Look at furniture or decorating items that most represent your former spouse and remove or replace them. You are given permission… • To let go – Sometimes we hold on to our old marriage items and symbols because they are still perfectly good, brand new, too expensive to throw away, or it will hurt to get rid of it. A wedding album and a wedding dress can actually be thrown away. Your old spouse’s favourite chair can be donated. Let go of wedding gifts and other wedding items. If it makes you feel better, keep one photograph but let the rest go. Or, box them all up and remove them from the premises. • To do as you like – It’s important to replace old patterns of behaviour with introducing new habits and patterns. That means you also have permission to do what you want when you want. Create a new schedule and watch those TV shows you liked so much but didn’t get to see on the weekends. Don’t adhere to old schedules or activities; create new ones. Instead of going to the lake on Saturdays, take a day trip to new locales in your area. 4. Build in new sources of support – Look for places and people who support you and your quest to begin anew. This can be anyone from friends you go out with to finding a therapist, a singles group, or a trainer to help you create a personalized work out. Think about professional help too. This can be a financial adviser, a better attorney, or even a feng shui consultant who can help you clear your space of old energies and re-energize your home. Bodywork, like massage, network chiropractic (a specialized form of chiropractic that releases old traumas), BodyTalk or Reiki can also be helpful. Activate the northwest corner of your home with something metallic or with crystals and gems to bring those sources of support into your life! 5. Love yourself – Treat yourself the way you’d treat a

good friend. Buy some of your favourite things, such as scented candles or a specialty coffee. Set up a schedule of regular pampering with manicures or pedicures and do things that make you feel taken care of and loved, and that maybe you didn’t do for yourself when you were married. 6. Love your house – Start seeing your home as your space and not just as the space that someone left or that you’re alone in. Buy your home flowers every week to energize it and introduce fresh, vibrant energy. Clean it regularly or hire a new housekeeper to clean it for you. Attend to any maintenance issues. When you take care of your home, you are taking care of yourself. While it might be tempting to avoid your house, don’t. Put a little extra time and TLC into your home. Find things to change or redecorate that bring you joy. This is a hopeful sign and symbolizes you moving on and brings renewed energy to your home. Consider changing the colour of your front door, swapping out light fixtures, or repainting a room. This puts a personal energy stamp on your home that says this space is your space; and that you enjoy it and that you are moving forward with hope and expectation. 7. See your life and your home grow – Create a fresh, growing start by adding new flowers or plants at the front door. Buy a pretty plant to set in a window indoors and pot up new plants for your patio. Try adding a kitchen garden with herbs. Plants are one of the best ways to add new energy to your home and to your life. Seeing their growing energy and having your hands in dirt is nature’s way of showing us new life, a fresh start and renewal. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I love your column and wanted to know if there is any way to use feng shui to help with personal boundaries? Answer: This is such a terrific question. We all have to set boundaries so that we don’t get pulled into unhealthy situations and relationships that draw and drain our energy. Sometimes it’s not about learning to say yes to move our lives forward, but our ability to say no that can make the difference. One way you can improve your boundaries is by improving your relationships with people who don’t take advantage of you and who help and energize you. I have to quote Lisa Hromada from her book, Love is the Seed, where she talks at length about energy – ours, and others – and how those with positive energy give off energy and provide more energy. Those with negative energy consume energy. It’s important that you recognize those who give you energy and those who consume it. Interestingly, those who give

you energy, network with you, assist you and come to your aid are called “Heaven People” in feng shui. Do what you can to add more heaven people to your life and you’ll find that you naturally steer away from the people who drain your energy. Leah Gazan

A principled voice, needed in Parliament by Malaya Marcelino MLA for Notre Dame

Leah Gazan is the New Democratic Party (NDP) candidate for Winnipeg Centre, running against incumbent Robert Falcon Ouellete in the fast approaching federal election on October 21. Leah made a giant splash in NDP circles when she beat out long-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and former Attorney-General, Andrew Swan, to compete to be the next Member of Parliament (MP) for Winnipeg Centre. Leah Gazan lives and works in Winnipeg Centre. She is an academic, having taught at the University of Winnipeg in the Faculty of Education. Before that she taught at Red River College. She was also the long-time chair of the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, an influential organization that focuses on antipoverty research and initiatives especially for children. Commitment to the Filipino community in Winnipeg When asked what kind of support or advocacy she intends to undertake on behalf of Filipinos in Manitoba, Gazan responded with several commitments.

As MP for Winnipeg Centre, Leah plans to dedicate a staff member in her constituency office with knowledge and expertise to support families with questions around immigration and credentialing. She would address the backlog of family reunification applications and work to end the unfair cap on applications to sponsor parents and grandparents. Gazan also believes in the slogan, “Good Enough to Work, Good Enough to Stay!” – meaning if the federal government can accept people to come and work here in Canada, then the federal government should also afford folks the right to become permanent residents here. Gazan and the NDP believe in protecting newcomers and treating caregivers with respect and dignity. and would provide them with opportunities to reunite with their families with minimal delay. Gazan believes in respecting the experiences, education and contributions of newcomers and is committed to working with provinces to improve the credential process to get newcomers jobs in their fields of study and experience. The personal is political A member of the Wood

Leah Gazan (centre) meets voters door-to-door with Malaya Marcelino, MLA for Notre Dame (left) Mountain Lakota Nation in Saskatchewan, Leah’s ancestry also includes Chinese and Jewish ethnicity. Her personal family history, particularly that of her parents’ lives, included the gruesome effects of Nazi concentration camps and also the brutality of the Canadian child welfare system in the 1950s. These personal family experiences shaped Gazan’s outlook in life and helped to mould her into the human rights activist and Indigenous leader that she is today. She has been a vocal advocate on climate justice issues through both an environmental and Indigenous human rights lens. Leah has a national profile

in support of Bill C-262, the Indigenous Human Rights Act, designed to ensure that Canadian laws are in harmony with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. She was the co-founder of #WeCare, a national campaign to end violence against Indigenous women and girls and two-spirited citizens. The NDP platform Leah Gazan and the NDP advocate for a range of public policy issues including affordable social housing, national pharmacare, a guaranteed annual income and expanded mental health services for all citizens. In Winnipeg Centre, 40.5 per cent of children live in poverty and we

need strong leadership to ensure that our families have what they need to thrive. According to Gazan, “I’m running because it’s time to address so many urgent issues like climate change, inequality, poverty and the denial of basic human rights. I want to put community back at the centre of our political process by listening to my constituents and fighting for investments that will make life better for all of us.” Leah’s is a passionate voice for equality and justice for all citizens, especially all equity seeking communities. Hers is a principled voice, one that is needed in Parliament.

Why should I check my credit history? by Tim St Vincent Before I get into the “why” part of this article, let’s first review what exactly your credit history is. For the most part, your credit history is everything you have done with respect to credit for the last seven years. In many respects your credit history is more important than your credit score, as your credit history is what determines your credit score. We have two credit bureaus in Canada, TransUnion and Equifax. They are private, for profit organizations that gather your credit history, and then take all of the information that they gather and turn it into your credit score. What type of information can they potentially know about you? Well, potentially they know your name, age, birthdate, where you live, where you work, how much you make, your home, work and cell phone numbers, all your credit cards, your mortgage amount, any lines of credit you have, all your insurance policies, even your gym membership. That is only the start of a very long list. How do they get this information? Well, you give it

to them – for free! Then they repackage it and sell it for a profit. Every time you fill out a credit card application, a job application, a rent form, an application for insurance, a cell phone contract; every time you sign a document where you promise to pay someone something, the odds are pretty good that somewhere on that form, in the fine print, you give the other party permission to run a credit check. When they do that, all the information they gathered on the forms goes up to the credit bureaus. The scariest thing isn’t that the credit bureaus have all this information about you. The scariest thing is that it can all be wrong! This can have a wideranging impact on your life. Your credit score has a lot more to do with you than what rate you get on a mortgage. A poor credit score can get in the way of renting an apartment or even from getting a job. If I had a low credit score, I would not have my current job. When I applied to work for the Credit Counselling Society, I gave them permission to run a credit check on me. Now what if

when the credit check was run, the information that came up was wrong? What if it had said that I had a very poor credit history and a very poor credit score? What if someone had made a mistake? The answer is simple; I likely would not have gotten the job. This happens all the time. People don’t realize that a poor credit history and a poor credit score can get in the way of finding a job. They will wonder, “Why didn’t I get that job? I was very well qualified and the interviews went very well,” but they won’t make the connection to their credit. Very few of us would even consider that as a possibility. The good news is that you have the legal right once a year to access all the information that the two credit bureaus, Equifax and TransUnion, have about you. Then once you have it, you can review it for any potential errors and correct them. This is free and has no impact on your score. Why haven’t you heard about this before? That’s easy: because it is a free service. Nobody makes any money on a free service, so there aren’t any commercials telling you about it. This isn’t your credit score. They can charge you to get

your credit score so there are lots of commercials for that. Keep in mind that in many ways your credit history is more important than your credit score, as it is your credit history that determines your credit score. It is also a great way to see if anyone has stolen your identity or used your credit fraudulently, as your credit history lists all of your debts and payments for the last seven years. For example, if it shows you owe $2000 to a phone company in Halifax, and you have never lived in Halifax, well someone may have stolen your identity. You don’t have to pay someone $20 a month to protect you on line. You can do it once a year for free. It is very important that when you go to the credit bureaus to get your credit history that you go to both of them. They keep separate files on you. Remember that these are private, forprofit organizations. They are not government organizations. Though the information they track about you is highly similar, it is not identical. They will each have somewhat different information on you. This means you actually have not one, but two credit scores; one

with each organization. Next month I will finish up this article and tell you about some real life errors that the credit bureaus have made, and the real life impacts these mistakes have made – including a mistake that I recently spotted that they made about me. This particular mistake caused my credit score to drop over 140 points. If I were to apply today for my current job with the incorrect score that the credit bureaus are reporting, I likely would not have this job. More on that when you pick up next months’ edition and we answer the question, “Why should I check my credit history?” Tim St Vincent is a retired CFP and is a Certified Educator in Personal Finance with the Credit Counselling Society, a Non-Profit organization.

Jennylyn Mercado – the Beauty of Descendants of the Sun After months of speculation, it is now official: Jennylyn Mercado is Dr. Maxine dela Cruz, a.k.a. Beauty on GMA Network’s highly-anticipated remake of the hit Korean drama series Descendants of the Sun. Since the announcement of the Philippine version, Jennylyn has been the top choice of fans for the coveted role. The awardwinning actress couldn’t help but share her excitement to reprise the immensely popular character of Beauty. “I am super happy to portray Dr. Maxine De La Cruz of Descendants of The Sun, the Philippine adaptation. When I heard they started taping already and preparing for the soap, ako din na-curious kung sino nga ang napili para sa role. When I learned that it was me, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for GMA’s trust and also pressured since I know how big this project is. I promised I would do everything to give justice to the role. I won’t let you

Jennylyn Mercado all down. Pangako,” she said. Dr. Maxine is a skilled cardiothoracic surgeon. While often noticed for her pretty face, she is headstrong, principled, See JENNYLYN p15

Joining them is the powerhouse cast of the soldiers’ team: Lucho Ayala, Jon Lucas, Paul Salas, Prince Clemente, Ricardo Cepeda, and Antonio Aquitania. CRISTY... *** Nagpa-executive check-up si Willie Revillame.

Para it’s a tie ang laban!

See CRISTY p18

Pinays MB continues mission under new board by Lucille Nolasco WINNIPEG – Now on its fourth year, the Filipino women’s group Pinays Manitoba or Pinays MB Inc. is enthusiastically planning their activities and community participation for the coming year. During their meeting on Sunday, September 22 – their first under the newly elected board of directors – members, old and new, discussed plans of action and how to be more involved in the community. Pinays MB seeks to recognize women who made outstanding contributions to the Philippine community and in the mainstream community. Its other goals include providing support

to Filipino women through confidence building, leadership and communication training, and participation in organized activities. Every month of March, which is International Women’s Month, Pinays MB holds its annual recognition luncheon. Here, women who have made an invaluable contribution to their respective fields are honoured and celebrated; women who have made a lasting impact in the community and in the lives of others. Among past awardees were: March 2016. The late Mrs. Carolina Custodio who was instrumental in bringing groups of garment workers from the Philippines to Manitoba in 1960 and also took the lead in assisting

them to make a smooth transition to life in Canada; and Mrs. Fe Ryder, now a retired nurse, who was one of the first five nurses to settle in Winnipeg in 1959. March 2017. The late Mrs. Rosalinda Cantiveros – a respected community leader who initially made her mark in the field of journalism; Mrs. Erlinda Magnaye-Ramos– an entrepreneur who established Manitoba’s first Filipino-owned bakery in 1971; and the Garment Workers Batch 1968 – a group of young and courageous Filipino women who left the Philippines in the mid-1960s to seek a better future overseas. In March 2018, three Pinay Trailblazers were recognized for their accomplishments and impact

in the community and lives of others. Among them is Nena Joy Lazo – for her achievements in the field of performing arts and for her advocacy in volunteerism and mentorship; MLA Flor Marcelino – for her achievements in the field of politics and outstanding community service; and Emmie Joaquin – for her achievements in the field of radio broadcasting and outstanding community service. In March 2019, the organization recognized three Pinay Trailblazers: Loizza Aquino – for her outstanding leadership and advocacy for Mental Health; Melody Balane – for her outstanding achievement in Sports; and Ma-Anne Dionisio – for her achievements in the field of Performing Arts.

And now the hunt is on for 2020’s Filipino women movers and achievers. It was one of the topics discussed in the meeting of the new board with its members. The new board of directors includes: President, Araceli Ancheta; Vice President, Winnie Navarro; Secretary, Roselyn Advincula; Treasurer, Connie De Villa; Auditor, Trifona Bermisa; PRO, Emmie Joaquin; and ExOfficio/Adviser, Perla Javate.

Sa Facebook, you are connected but actually disconnected.

Puro peke at artipisyal.

Kasapi ng Ecumenical Movement for Justice and Peace (EMJP). Multicultural Connection and Friendship Show The Manitoba Multiculturalism Secretariat, under the Ethnocultural Community Support Program, presented the annual Multicultural Connection and Friendship event held October 5 at the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural Community Centre. This year’s event welcomed several new participants. The Bulacan Association of Winnipeg featured a colourful Filipiniana costume fashion show. During the event, Ms. Clarita Nazario, the Queen of Costume, was acknowledged in recognition of her years of service in designing and making traditional costumes and clothing for members of Manitoba’s Filipino community. Every year there is a special day

designated for Multiculturalism aimed at fostering an opportunity for all Canadians to celebrate the country’s diversity. This is an opportunity to build cross-cultural relationships, friendships, and to foster connections through the sharing of community and ethnic traditions, costumes and the art of dance.
