Long train ride home It was kind of fitting that on the last night of my year-long sojourn in Metro Manila I took the LRT (Light Rail Transit) home during rush hour. I had a meeting in Makati that ended at 5:30 p.m., and at that point I knew the fastest way back to our house in Malabon was by train. As I walked down Gil Puyat Avenue – which some of you may know by its old name Buendia – I saw a number of buses going north. Since many of them were half-empty I was tempted to wait for one that would take me straight to Sangandaan in Caloocan, which is only 500 meters away from our house. But as I approached the LRT station it was clear that none were coming, so I instinctively looked for the line that I knew would be forming at the street level. It was a Monday, after all, and rush hour at that. A year of living in Manila can teach you a lot of things, mostly about patience and strategy. In my first months of living there I had to commute to and from Malacañang, and one of the things I was dreading at first was taking the LRT. I knew it would be packed in the morning and
evening, but it was still the fastest and cheapest way to get to and from work. So I just kept on and quickly developed a way to get on at the least amount of time. I found out on which platform to stand, which car to take, which part of the train to stand on, and so on. But you know what they say about the best-laid plans of mice and men – they often go “aray” (“ouch” in Filipino, which sounds exactly like “awry”). In times when the line is several hundred meters long, you just grit your teeth and wait. The good thing about the LRT (which I cannot say about its twin sister the Metro Rail Transit which runs the length of EDSA) is that even if there is a long line, you know you will soon get on the train. It’s easy to get discouraged when you have to stand in line right on the street, but it’s generally worth the wait. That’s how I felt when I saw the line at the Buendia station that Monday. Even though I was expecting it to be long, I was still a little disheartened because I was tired and all I wanted at that point was to get home. But I remembered the
mantra I developed in my months of traveling by train: This too shall pass. Sure enough in about 15 minutes I was already at the platform, and five minutes later I was on the train. All in all it took me less than an hour-and-a-half to get home that day – not bad considering I would have been on the road at least two hours had I taken the bus. But 1.5 hours is still 1.5 hours, and in my year of living in Manila I never got used to the heavy traffic and all the time that is lost therein. In the second half of my stay there I worked in the Ortigas business centre area, and I spent about four hours two and from work on a daily basis. I coped by working in the car (thank God for Uber and Grab), but there were days that I could start only by being at the office. I came to the conclusion that the only way to properly work in the capital is to wake up extra early in the morning – and steel yourself to getting home late at night. But as I wrote earlier, it was only a year-long sojourn in Manila. I went there to work in government, and while I learned a lot from my stint there, it really is
time to come home to Davao City. And so my stay in the big city ended the way it basically began: on the LRT. That last trip was particularly brutal because of how packed the train was. I had to fight for my space as it got eaten up by more and more people trying to fit into the already filled up space. Each stop meant more people streaming in, and at one point I felt like I was being crushed. But again the good thing about the LRT is that the train keeps moving – which is more than can be said of the cars and buses below. I think that’s the life lesson I learned in Manila: things may be slow, difficult, and even harsh, but just soldier on and you’ll eventually get to where you’re going. In my case it was a long train ride back home literally and figuratively, but it was worth the trip. Take a break and rejuvenate Recent research and reports show that depression and anxiety are on the rise among Canadians. Overall, we live in a culture where people work long hours, do not exercise enough, have unhealthy eating habits, and engage in excessive screen time. This begs the question: How do you rest and rejuvenate? Engaging in activities that nurture the mind, body and soul is a must, especially because we are heading into the fall and winter months when time outside will be more restricted. If you’ve tried various activities and are looking for something new to try, think about what kind of a learner you are. Howard Gardner was a developmental psychologist who is famous for his theory on multiple intelligences. Essentially, this theory supports that there is not just one way of being “smart.” There are actually at least nine different ways that people learn, understand and perceive the world. I think that the following not only describes different ways to learn, but different ways that you can de-stress and take care of yourself. 1. Linguistic Intelligence (“word smart”) is the ability to
use spoken or written words. People with this capability have a large vocabulary and are eloquent when they speak, such as authors and poets. They often think in words and learn best by hearing the explanation. If you fall into this category, the right stress management outlet for you may be reading, writing poetry or stories, or playing word games. Crossword or word search puzzles will likely be fun and relaxing for you. If you really want to be creative, try learning a new language. 2. Visual-Spatial Intelligence (“picture smart”) refers to the ability to mentally visualize objects and spatial dimensions, such as what architects, designers, photographers, and physicists do. These individuals are very aware of their environments and have a good sense of direction. If you have always had a tendency towards learning better through visual aids like charts and pictures – and think that you would be great on the reality TV show, Amazing Race – you are likely high in this type of intelligence. Regarding stress management, try drawing or painting, 3D puzzles, or taking photos. Maybe even go and explore your city like a tourist would.
3.Logical-Mathematical Intelligence (“number smart”) refers to reasoning, calculating, using logic, and the use of numbers and abstract pattern recognition. People with this type of intelligence would excel as accountants, computer programmers, scientists and mathematicians. They learn best by experimenting and solving puzzles. They need to understand the concept first before paying attention to details. Stress management activities could include playing suduko, chess, or computer games. Even cooking and baking could work for you because it involves following steps to achieve a goal. 4.Body-Kinesthetic Intelligence (“body smart”) is the ability to control one’s bodily motions and handle objects well. These people have good hand-eye coordination and a sense of timing such as athletes, dancers, police officers and fire fighters. If you fall into this category, some ways for you to unwind after a stressful day could include going for a walk, run or bike ride, playing a sport, yoga, or taking a dance class. 5.Musical-Rhythmic Intelligence (“music smart”) refers to sensitivity to rhythm, pitch, melody, and tone of music. These people learn best through songs, patterns, rhythms, instruments,
and musical expression, such as musicians, singers, and dancers. Some strategies that could work for you could be to simply hum or sing when feeling stressed, playing an instrument, watching music videos online, or taking a Zumba class. 6. Interpersonal Intelligence (“people smart”) is the ability to communicate well with others and develop relationships. These people empathize with others’ situations, are sensitive to the moods and feelings of others, and can cooperate well. People with high interpersonal intelligence enjoy discussion and debate and are often counsellors, teachers, politicians, managers and sales people. In order to de-stress, it is important for you to talk to someone when you are troubled, rather than bottling it up inside. An evening out with friends or family, joining a volunteer group or book club could be opportunities to get that social interaction that you look for. 7. Intrapersonal Intelligence (“self smart”) refers to beings highly aware of their own feelings, interests and goals. If you belong to this category, you have wisdom, a strong will, and are confident. You also value your privacy and enjoy time spent alone. Good career choices for you might include See CHERYL p5

CHERYL... From page 4 being a psychologist, counsellor, clergy member, or entrepreneur. Some appropriate stress outlets for you might include writing in a journal or diary, reading, or going for walks on your own. You might find massage therapy to be relaxing. 8. Naturalistic Intelligence (“nature smart”) is one of the most recent additions to Gardner’s original theory. People that possess this kind of intelligence are more in tune with nature and are interested in preserving and exploring the environment and the animals and plants within it. If you are high in nature smarts, you might enjoy work as a gardener, biologist, veterinarian or farmer. Some recreational activities that would reduce stress for you include gardening, hiking, and camping. Even if your job requires that you remain inside most of the time, use your breaks to go outside. A quick walk around the block could do wonders for you. 9. Existential Intelligence (“spirituality smart”) can be defined as the ability to be sensitive to deeper questions about human existence, i.e.: What is the meaning of life? How did we get here? Why is there pain in the world? Such people have a desire to be connected to others and likely to a higher being. If you feel you are one of these individuals, you would do well in employment as a motivational speaker, philosopher, counsellor, clergy member or a researcher.
PILIPINO EXPRESS Ways that you can nurture this part of you would be through prayer, meditation, deep breathing and mindfulness exercises. Since you enjoy theory and making sense of the world, you may benefit from taking a theory, philosophy or science class for fun. Volunteer work could be worthwhile to you, as you would get satisfaction out of helping others. Whatever outlet you choose, it is crucial that you learn how to
best reduce your stress. Without effective stress management tools, your body will frequently be operating on high alert. Eventually, high stress will lead to serious health problems. Start by trying a new stress outlet today. You might be surprised by how you feel tomorrow! Cheryl Dizon-Reynante is a licensed therapist with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

PEI cancels some business immigration streams The recent headlines about the business program in Prince Edward Island has called attention to the potential for abuse by users who often invest for purposes of obtaining permanent status in Canada. PEI announced on September 20, 2018 that they would no longer accept applications from applicants looking to establish a business in the province through two of its current business stream. A series of investigations identified abuse in the 100% Ownership and Partial Ownership streams, which offered a provincial nomination for investors seeking to purchase existing PEI businesses or opening a new one. Under the 100% Ownership and Partial Ownership streams, candidates were required to have a net worth of $600,000 and post a $200,000 deposit with the province that would be refunded once certain conditions were met. The problem, however, is that many applicants did not meet the preconditions. A spokesman of the
PEI program said, “concerns were raised over the number of deposits being forfeited once an immigrant arrived on Prince Edward Island and failed to open a business, keep it open, or decided to more to a different province after already receiving permanent residency.” There was a perception of a quid pro quo where the deposit amount itself was seen as the cost of a permanent resident visa. The provincial government will continue to offer programs for newcomers, including investors, but changes are required. “The program wasn’t meeting the expectations of Islanders, and it wasn’t meeting the expectations of government,” said Economic Development Minister Chris Palmer. At this time there are several federal probes, conducted by CBSA, into potential abuse cases where business immigrants are alleged to have used false addresses. The situation is compounded not by the fact that there are abusers but that the controls were not in place to
prevent it from happening. PEI will continue to offer other options to entrepreneurs but will no longer grant immediate permanent residency after receiving a deposit. The businesses will now have to demonstrate their success and continue in operations for over one year before any applicant receives his or her permanent residency. This requirement is commonplace in other provinces such as Manitoba. The PEI Economic Development Minister Palmer tried to give the recent actions of the government a good spin: “We know that people making contributions to the economy that are working, that are creating businesses, are very valuable to the economy of the province, so we know that that is more valuable to us than a deposit.” Under the cancelled program, immigrants who provided a refundable deposit of $200,000 and did not comply with the preconditions of setting up the business in PEI would lose $50,000 of the deposit or the residency portion. The $150,000 balance was considered part
of the business portion. The PEI government actually acknowledged in 2017 that large numbers of entrepreneurs were not operating businesses. In November last year the PEI government acknowledged that it had not returned $18,000,000 in deposits from 177 entrepreneur immigrants, most of whom had never opened businesses. They were aware then that a problem existed and have moved to rectify things. The opposition PC Party was correct in its condemnation of the cancelled program and the leader noted, “People weren’t taking us seriously, they were just seeing us an easy way through.” Apart from the expected partisan criticism, neutral immigration lawyer Richard Kirkland spoke for us all when he described the entire episode as, “embarrassing to the PEI government and may well shed doubt on the integrity of the Prince Edward Island immigration program.” Before we are too ready to criticize PEI, we should not forget that the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program for Business
was suspended for a period of time because of abuse from users. It was reopened with a tier approach to permanent residency, which requires investors to set up businesses and operate them in Manitoba. The MPNP has also moved away from the requirement for performance deposits in favour of giving the applicants the responsibility to demonstrate that they have added something tangible to the province in terms of economic growth and job creation. All programs are open to abuse and it is good to see that even PEI has finally moved to correct the abuse. The provinces and Canada itself needs immigration. It’s the corruption we do not need. Sometimes change is not good Talking about the weather is an easy conversation starter. It works best when you are stuck in an elevator with a stranger, in line at a grocery store, or even on a blind date. “Hot enough for ya?” “Cold enough for ya?” “Windy enough for ya?” It’s easy. Next thing you know, you’re laughing and bonding like you’ve known each other for years. For years, there has been talk about global warming. We’ve heard multiple warnings from environmentalists like David Suzuki telling us that we are at the tipping point and if we don’t make a conscious change now, it will be too late. The topic has even made its way to the Burgos dinner table. The question came up about how hot it is getting on Vancouver Island. There hasn’t been a need for air conditioning, and quite frankly, I’m not going to be running out to Costco any time soon to buy a portable AC unit. But if this keeps up, maybe I will. My response was simple. If it’s getting too hot, Mother Earth will have to cool down. It’s happened before – it was called the Ice Age. Earth is a living being, if it gets sick, it will have to fight that disease to make it healthy again. Dale Jr., never one
to pass up an opportunity for a sarcastic comment, says, “The Earth has a heart, it has lungs?” I gave him the obligatory eye-roll (which happens a lot in my house), and said, “Maybe not like you and me, but it is a living thing.” I should point out, I’m not a scientist who has studied climate change for decades. I’m more like a conspiracy theorist with some whacky ideas. I assume a major event like the Ice Age wouldn’t happen over night, contrary to the Hollywood blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow, where a weather anomaly causes flash freezing temperatures destroying cities and their inhabitants in its path. Before you start to think I am losing my mind, let’s take a look at some of the unusual weather patterns this year. Folks in the south welcomed 2018 with resolutions to buy warmer clothes. Parts of Florida got blanketed with freezing rain and snow on New Years Day, something they have not seen in January since the 1800s. Also in January, one of the hottest places on earth known for miles of sand dunes saw some snowfall. The Sahara Desert got a bit of the white stuff. While it often gets cold at night, the addition of precipitation made it a late White Christmas for some
Africans. Fast forward to May 2018 here on Vancouver Island. It’s a fact that we live in a rainforest. It rains and there is plenty of vegetation – massive cedars and Douglas firs are a common sight. Yet, May resulted in one of the driest months on record. Victoria recorded only 3.4 mm of rain, where it would normally receive about 40 mm for the month. This was one record I didn’t mind seeing broken. Come summer time, it got dry in BC. I mean really dry. It was also hot. I mean really hot. This led to a record amount of forest fires across the province. This was one record I wish
we didn’t break. Millions of trees, hundreds of thousands of hectares of land destroyed, as well as homes and communities lost. Millions were affected by smoke, not only here in BC but across the country. There was a point when the air quality in my home town was the worst in the world. Scary. Then September rolls around. There is one guaranty for this month. That would be the millions of kids returning to school. Something not guaranteed, is snow. Mother Nature, never one to be predictable, provided a dumping of the white stuff in northern parts of BC and Alberta. My cousin shared a picture of
their backyard in Edmonton on September 13. This last example is more Darwin’s Theory of Evolution than weather patterns. Scientists have witnessed a great white shark in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Nova Scotia. These sharks tend to stay in the warmer waters. Could it be that the shark got lost? Took a left instead of a right? Who knows? Looking back, I didn’t mind the dry May. The hot summer was pretty good. The snow in September? Sometimes, change is not so good. How two metallurgical engineers shaped their future together First meeting University of the Philippines (UP), 2001. Engineering classroom. He was standing in front and she was sitting at the back. Angelito (Lito) and Jeraldine (Jhie) Velasco met while both were attending classes at UP. Lito was taking his masters degree in engineering while also teaching classes. Jhie was in her third year of undergraduate engineering and taking one of the Lito’s courses classes. He thought she was smart and pretty with a bubbly personality. She thought he was a very determined guy and someone who looked like he knew exactly what he wanted in life, confident and in control of his actions. While they would see each other in class, they never dated until Jhie finished her degree three years after they first met. The classroom was a silent witness to a union forged to last. Lito, originally from Davao City, graduated with a metallurgical engineering degree and followed it up with a master’s degree in material science and engineering both at UP, Diliman. Not one to sit on his laurels, he continued his higher learning at Toyohashi University of Technology in Japan, where he successfully completed his doctor’s degree in engineering. He loves science and math, which drew him to engineering. Though admittedly, he didn’t know much about metallurgical engineering, he eventually found it very interesting. “Metallurgical engineering is a broad field of engineering that covers mining, extraction, design and processing of metals,” he said. Jeraldine, a 2004 metallurgical engineering graduate, took up the profession at the prodding of her big sister, Ria. Her sister’s friend was a metallurgical engineer whose job enabled her to travel for business overseas. This appealed so much to Jhie that she held on to that vision of landing a job with good compensation and the opportunity to travel outside the country. As fate would have it, upon graduating, she was hired at Intel Technologies – the same company where her sister’s friend was working! One of the many things they had in common is that they both regard their parents as their inspiration in life. They remarked, “Our parents
are our role models and they have been very supportive to us, their children, in anything we do.” First date Jhie made the first move by asking Lito for a dinner meeting, which he accepted, thinking that she was asking him on a date. He was wrong, as it was just a business dinner. Jhie asked him if he could join her and her partners in their multi-level marketing business, which he was known to be good at. Jhie recalled, “My business partners wanted to make sure Lito wouldn’t say “No.” Apparently, he had a crush on me way back when I was a student. True enough, he joined our team and we have worked together since.” Needless to say, they became business partners and their relationship soon turned into more than just that. They were separated by distance when Lito left for Japan for his doctorate degree, while she stayed to work in the Philippines. But despite the distance, their relationship stayed strong. The proposal On the way home from workrelated training in Arizona, Jhie briefly visited Lito in Toyohashi, Japan. “I took her to a nature park where I asked her to marry me, ” said Lito. To which, she said “Yes.” They were married on October 19, 2008, after four years of dating. The union While blissfully married, there are some things about each other that drive them a little crazy. Jhie said, “Back then, when I texted him he would reply more than once right away. Now, I have to read my message to him when I get home.” Lito on the other hand said, “When she ask me for my opinion, but it doesn’t matter anyway.” But these little things only spice up their married life. Like their parents – whom they look up to as a couple – and fine wine, their relationship improves with age. Careers then Jhie was hired at Intel Philippines as a Quality & Reliability Engineer. “It was a great place to work with a great group of people from top managers to assembly workers, excellent benefits which included travel opportunities, fitness facilities, flexible time.” she said.
Lito’s professional career in the Philippines has always been in the academe, starting as an instructor of Engineering at UP, until he became an associate professor of Metallurgical Engineering and a doctoral researcher. Though content with her career at Intel, Jhie applied as a permanent resident (PR) through the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program as a back-up plan, in case things didn’t work out. She must have seen the future, as when she got her PR visa, Intel announced that it was closing its facility. It was not a hard decision for her to make. Lito, on the other hand, went with the flow. He said, “I promised my wife that I would go with her anywhere she wanted to go.” A life less ordinary They moved to Canada in October of 2009, a year after getting married. As with most immigrants starting a new life, their first year in Winnipeg had many challenges. However, their situation may be different than most newcomers, in that they were just starting out as a married couple and were expecting their first-born. Jhie described it as the most depressing period of her life. She was four months pregnant when they arrived. She said, “My first pregnancy coupled with the fear of the unknown turned my life upside down.” Lito added, “We did not have a lot of cash, but we had very supportive relatives.” They both used to have very successful individual professional careers back in the Philippines and were in full control of their lives. Now faced with no jobs, no house of their own, unfamiliar surroundings, approaching the winter season and being expectant parents, they found themselves with a seemingly bleak future. Jhie recalled, “I had to wait for him to come home from work just so I could go outside the house. It was winter and I was pregnant. It was like that for months, until my son was five months old that I finally was able to get to work, landing a job as a wheel inspector at Griffin Wheels Canada. I was depressed.” Lito was a professor and research assistant with a PhD degree but he took a cleaning job, delivered newspapers and worked as a labourer to make ends See FORGED p9

Not everyone is a supermodel or looks like Chris Hemsworth in the film, Thor. Yet, we all, in our own ways, can look our very best. Think about when you dress up to go to a special event or party. You feel good – and that means attractive. You may even feel wealthier and more confident. Too often you can slip into a rut of wearing the same thing or style all the time. Or, maybe you don’t put your best foot or face forward except for special occasions. It’s easy to slip into the comfort zone to the point that it becomes a trap of not looking our best, or we appear dated. How you look, dress and care for yourself is part of your personal feng shui. It’s not just about kua numbers and the direction you look at work or where your head points in bed. It’s also simply about you. Your appearance is a big part of that. But that doesn’t mean you

have to have a $400 haircut, expensive clothes or be stick thin. My own makeup is a mixture of expensive department store brands and drugstore brands. Keeping up your appearances by looking and dressing nicely makes you feel better — and that projects out into the world and returns to you in the form of improved chi. My husband would always say that when he was wearing a suit and went anywhere he got better service especially at department stores and restaurants. I’ve noticed that when I wear heels, makeup and my hair looks good and I’m smartly accessorized, I feel good and I get better service and attract more friendly people, positive reactions and things seem easier. That’s a lot of the reason why you want to look and feel good; you want to make opportunities come to you and raise your personal energy so that you’ll attract good fortune to your life. Here are ways you can look
OCTOBER 1 - 15, 2018
Look your best: How to feng shui your appearance to manifest wealth, love and opportunity and feel your best – and attract love, wealth and open doors in your life by lifting your personal chi. Dress smartly: You don’t have to wear a suit and tie or an evening gown to dress smartly. Even shorts and a cute top can look great. Avoid the tendency to just throw on whatever you find in the closet. Be sure to accessorize, too. If you go out in jeans, dress them up with a cute top, jewellery or maybe a pair of heels instead of the usual sneaker. I always feel a bit more dressed up and smarter looking when I wear a dress. Think, what makes you feel dressier or smarter looking? Wear colour: It’s easy to fall into the dark colour trap. Dark colours hide stains, past bagels and waffles, but they can become a fashion pothole we fall into.
Break out of the funeral colour rut by adding bright colours to your wardrobe. This is especially important if you’re a single woman. Potential admirers are attracted to colour and colour makes you look more bright, radiant, fun and eye-catching! It also raises your energy. Be as fit at you can be: Again, you don’t have to be a model on the cover of an exercise magazine, just work on keeping your body healthy and as fit as you can. Wear clothes that show off your best features, too. Avoid clothes that are too tight, too loose, too baggy or that look worn and tired – because it will make you look too loose, too baggy, and worn out and tired! Put your best face forward: A touch of make-up, good skin care, and regular shaving and facials are one way to keep yourself looking good, fresh and vibrant. This includes your hair. Get a good haircut that flatters you and keep your hair nicely groomed. Your hair is your crowning glory, so keep your crown looking good. Slenderize and lengthen: Let’s face it, we all at some time or another fight the battle of the bulge, but one way to keep yourself looking attractive is by wearing clothing that slenderizes and lengthens you. A terrific way is with a monochromatic outfit. This is especially helpful for petites. When you wear a solid colour top and bottom, you appear taller. And, if you want to slenderize your appearance a bit, the monochrome helps with that as well. So does wearing one size larger if your current size is too snug. Of course, clothes that are ill fitting will also affect your appearance, so if pants are too baggy in the waist, see the tailor. Well-fitting clothes can make you look thinner and more slender. Up-level your appearance: Whether it’s a work or a daily “uniform” you put on, look for ways to put a fresh spin on your daily dress. A bright scarf around your neck looks jaunty and instantly adds more verve to your style. Maybe you need some smart accessories, such as a chunky or colourful necklace or fun earrings.
You don’t have to have expensive clothing to dress it up a bit and uplevel your look. Even jeans can be spiffed up to look stylish and sophisticated. Warp speed your personal chi: One of the ways you get into ruts is by wearing your hair the same way, or when your clothes become a rubber stamp style. Maybe your makeup may be the area where you could use some freshening up on your style. Simply put: you look dated. If so, look for a stylist who can help make the most of your hairstyle, looks and clothing style. An afternoon spent working on a “freshen up” will do wonders for your personal chi!” Your personal feng shui isn’t just about directions and colours – it’s also simply about you and how you present yourself in the world. Make it the best you can! FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My weight has bothered me for a long time, but I’ve tried every diet possible. Could it be my feng shui? Answer: There’s a lot in feng shui that could contribute to your weight. This can range from holding on to painful mementos that you can’t let go of (like the weight) that literally “weigh” you down. Is it possible you’re hanging onto something out of obligation; guilt or that has painful memories associated with it? Guilty feelings often pack the weight on us. Let go of the guilt in your home by removing things you don’t enjoy and give you pleasure. Maybe you have too much stuff and not enough clear space. A lot of weight is accumulation in the home that’s reflected in the body. All I can say is that when I See FENG SHUI p9

FENG SHUI... FORGED... From page 8 From page 7 moved to Mexico with only what fit in my car, I dropped 10 pounds almost instantly. If you have too much stuff and it’s out of balance with the space you keep it in – like a body that’s out of balance and carrying more weight than it’s meant to – you can have weight gain. From a home standpoint, make sure there is nothing blocking your front door and that your home has movement and clear space for chi to move. If chi gets stuck, so does weight. Get rid of old “skinny” clothes that only remind you of looking backwards – not forwards. Look too at your diet, making sure there is a balance there. Try to eat more soups, but not ones like broccoli cheddar that are loaded with calories. I’m talking about clear soups that are made with broth, like chicken and rice, borscht, or beef vegetable that are loaded with nutrition. The warm water in soup helps make you feel full and the heat can help with metabolism. In fact, even in trying times, Lito was able to build a great relationship and got along well with Jhie’s aunts, who took them in when they were just starting. He was even referred to as a “favourite nephew” by one of the aunts. “Those memories only confirm that Lito is truly the one for me and I made the right decision choosing him to be with the rest of my life,” Jhie said. Forming their future Lito started his academic assessment in February 2010 and decided to write the two confirmatory exams assigned to him, as this option would still enable him to continue to work to support his family. It took him less than a year to complete the exams and in September of 2011 he was registered as an engineer-intraining (EIT). Then, less than two years later, he got his professional engineer (P.Eng.) designation. Jhie started the process in April 2012, taking the same route as her husband. Only instead of taking two exams, she was assigned five. She would have considered the interview option, if it were made available for her. Unfortunately, Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba would take a long time to gather metallurgical engineers to complete a panel. She took one exam per session (every 6 months) and successfully passed all five exams in two and half years. She See FORGED p10

Environmental lessons from our ancestors Well before colonization made its first mark on the Philippine islands, our ancestors had a deep connection and stewardship to the land, and understood the importance of preserving and caring for the environment in order to sustain the existence of both the land and the water for future generations. Elders built a relationship with nature and different island communities developed specialized knowledge, rituals, and customary practices that often overlapped with spirituality, healing, and cultural preservation. In current times, extreme weather conditions and global climate disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity and becoming more widespread. Manmade environmental degradation has brought about climate change and, while every living being on the planet is experiencing its effects, those with the least socioeconomic capital are the most vulnerable. In the Philippines, typhoons, floods, landslides, drought, and other ecological decimations hit poor and rural indigenous communities the hardest, particularly individuals who are systemically impacted by the policy legacies of colonization and the global flows of capitalism. Therein lies the question – is there a way that Philippine indigenous knowledge and practices from our ancestors and our elders can help our current society both mitigate, and adapt to, the effects of climate change? What can we learn from our ancestors and their relationship to the land on how to care for and preserve the environment? Dennis Gupa seeks to explore this question through collaborative

He said, “I chose to get involved because I believed the chapter can provide encouragement and support to its members towards becoming professional engineers or geoscientists through networking, professional development seminars and social events”. Lito was elected and served as chapter president from 20122014. He established a bursary award for deserving chapter members to help ease the financial burden of completing the academic qualification to get their professional designation. When asked about how she got involved in the chapter, Jhie goodhumouredly said, “I was dragged in by Lito!” But on a serious note, she said, “I’m happy I let myself get involved because I got to know amazing and wonderful fellow Filipino Engineers who inspire me to continue going forward on the road to PEng.” Jhie was the only female
speaker at the chapter’s first Roadmap to Peng information session. She said, “I know female engineers who are also mothers can relate to what I’ve been through and get inspired somehow.” With all that they’ve been through, Angelito and Jeraldine are truly an inspirational couple who triumph through life’s challenges. “I know the five years spent in the University to graduate with an engineering degree is gruelling. We all know the effort, time and money that we and our parents spent just to get us through all those years. Don’t let your decision to go to Canada end the rewards that you are supposed to be reaping as an engineer. This process is not as tough as before when you were starting university. Your brains have acquired that knowledge and wisdom throughout the years of experience. You just need to have faith in God and yourself that anything is possible, ” says Jeraldine Velasco, EIT. “Not to give up, but persevere. To get involved with the Filipino Chapter, where you can meet

CRISTY...

ROM-COM... From page 1 the Philippines in 1967 to answer Canada’s call for nurses, taking on two-year contracts at the local hospital. Small town life is far from simple as cultural clashes, homesickness, and the amorous but dim-witted goalie from the local hockey team complicate the women’s lives. On the surface, this is a farcical romantic comedy based on the mistaken identity of two Filipina nurses. But it’s also a time capsule that allows us to open up a specific period in Canadian history – “Expo ‘67: Canada Welcomes the World”. And as we reflect on today’s political and cultural climates, it’s also a perfect time to consider that welcoming newcomers – though often imperfect in its execution – wasn’t always so difficult. “The play really takes place in this moment,” says director Ardith Boxall. “Even with the colonial associations that the centennial now holds for us as Canadians as we try to work through our history, it is a remarkable time capsule to open up – an era of change and hopefulness, of learning and welcoming people from around
the world. And that story belongs to many Canadian citizens.” After its premiere at the Blyth Festival, Prairie Nurse has taken the stage at three more Canadian theatres before making its home at PTE. “What accounts for its amazing trajectory so far is its glowing sense of humour and

Narito ang post sa social media na ipinakalat sa maraming groups para magbigay babala: “COMMUNITY: BEWARE: ALLEGED SCAMMERS PRETENDING TO BE JEWELRY SELLERS Two of our listeners sent us messages to share information and give warning to others about recent experiences both of their parents had. We are sharing part of their message to give a friendly reminder to all: ‘My parents encountered a couple of weeks ago who were selling them pieces of jewelry. They first asked them if they are Filipinos and requested them to come closer to their car. My parents refused. Woman went out of the car when my parents did not come to them. They were then asked to take a look at the jewelry on the woman’s palm. My parents said no. ‘It happened in Burrows near Tyndall and Garden Grove area. Unfortunately, they were not able to get the plate number of the grey car. Just say no to them and leave and get the plate number if you can. ‘“(name withheld) *** ‘For Public awareness: A man and woman saying they come from a Middle East country, age of early 50s approached my mother last May 24th in the north west side of the city. A woman in a car rolled her window down and called her over. My mom came closer the woman asked her what ethnic background she was. She handed my mom a ring. My mom said “No, no” and the woman said take it because they are giving away these gifts because Jesus tells them to. The woman then put on a necklace on my mom’s neck. Little did my mom know the lady
took the necklace my mom was wearing. Mom only found out her necklace was stolen when she got home. Too sorry, necklace has a sentimental value because it was a gift from my father. Salamat.’” You want this necklace?” Agad kong sinabing: “No, no, no,” sa malakas na boses.
Mula ito sa panulat ni Sandra Ghaz ng PhilNews: A former member of the budol budol gang allegedly shared some of his experience when he was still a part of the group. Undeniably, lots of people have been victimized by the budol budol gang. When you compare how their money or things were taken, you will get to hear different experiences and that’s because the group has different techniques and strategies based on a recent feature report in Infograpix. According to the report, the source has interviewed a former gang member kept as alias Rafaeil to protect the identity of the person. He is now a converted Christian and works in a religious group in the Philippines.
The report entailed some portion of the interview that the source has made with Rafaeil. Here are some of the “Master Secrets” of the budol budol gang based on the report. 1. Mentalist Based on the report, it is not true that the budol budol member speaks some rituals before they get to victimize a person. The source cited National Geographic and Discovery Channel wherein a “Doorway” was tackled. It is a “passage of entrance” to get rid of the present conscious mind of the person. The expert gang members, based on the report, would touch the left shoulder of the victim and would utter a word to get the consciousness of the person. Rafaeil claimed that he got some techniques with the help of the technology. He also confirmed See MAG-INGAT p19

With regards on how to counter it, based on the report, one is advised to prevent staring directly at another person’s eyes when talking to a stranger. 2. Paawa Effect According to the report, this technique uses kids or an old woman. A kid or an old woman would be left in an area and then that person is tasked to ask somebody to help them get to a certain place. The counter to this is to bring the person to a police station instead of taking the person to another place as it can lead to crimes. 3. Laglag Barya This technique uses coins and involves three gang members based on the report. One is tasked to drop a coin while the other two are tasked to get close to the victim and to steal. This technique goes almost the same with Laslas Modus. However, in the laslas modus, the bag is oftentimes really cut. 4.

Thinkers are doers nga, di ba?

File a case against Elmo!
namamahal kina Janella at Elmo. *** Umuulan man ay umuwing See CRISTY p21

Isang mahigpit na yakap at See CRISTY p22

Manitoba’s minimum wage is now $11.35 Effective Oct. 1, 2018, the minimum wage in the province increased by 20 cents to $11.35. “We are improving wages for working Manitobans and as of Oct.1, the minimum wage is increasing to $11.35,” said Growth, Enterprise and Trade Minister Blaine Pedersen. “We remain committed to indexing Manitoba’s minimum wage with the rate of inflation in a predictable and sustainable way.” This adjustment is based on Manitoba’s 2017 inflation rate of 1.6 per cent and rounding up to the nearest five cents. In 2017, amendments were made to the Employment Standards Code that provide a consistent and predictable way of indexing Manitoba’s minimum wage through a simple, transparent formula, Pedersen noted. Information on the minimum wage and other employment standards is available at www.gov.mb.ca/labour/standards.
CRISTY...
– CSF
