MANITOBA - The Philippine Garment Workers of 1968-1969 celebrated their 50th anniversary and reunion at the Canad Inns Polo Park on Saturday, September 15th. The group was the first wave of Filipino immigrants who came to Manitoba as part of a recruitment
programme to bring workers into the province’s garment industry. They arrived in Winnipeg on October 1, 1968 and, by the time the program ended in 1972, just over 1,200 Filipino workers had come to Winnipeg. Many of these workers, in turn, helped to
sponsor their friends and family to immigrate, giving birth to the Filipino-Canadian community of over 83,000 that continues to grow in Manitoba today. Jon Reyes, MLA for St. Norbert presented the Premier’s See GARMENT p16

Buhay Davao Slice of Davao City life There is really no “best time” to visit Davao City since the weather is pretty stable yearround and you can enjoy the sights at any time of the year. But if you’re a fruit lover then you shouldn’t miss August and September. Every Davaoeño waits for this time of the year since all the fruits the city is known for – mangosteen, lanzones, marang, rambutan, and especially durian – are, as my wife puts it, literally rolling on the streets. “Nag-awasawas” is the word for it, which means the fruits “spill” from the fruit carts right onto the roads. That, of course, means the prices for these fruits are at their lowest levels. Mangosteen, which is sold at more than P200 a kilo in Davao during the off-season, can be bought for around P50 a kilo. Lanzones is the same, as well as marang. My wife’s personal favourite is the rambutan, which is currently sold at P40 a kilo. While inflation may be causing the prices of basic commodities to go higher, Davaoeños can take solace in the fact that at least these fruits are well within reach. Fruit season in Davao is truly a sight to see. Bankerohan market is where the action is, and the vendors place their fruit carts right on the roads because there is no more space inside the building. If you stand on one corner you’ll see a mix of colors that remind you of Christmas: reds, greens, yellows, and violets dot the landscape, all enhanced by the Technicolor umbrellas that cover each cart. Davaoeños of all shapes and sizes flock to the area and, believe it or not, even haggle for a lower price.
The fruit we all wait for all year is the durian, the king of them all, which on average is sold at P50 a kilo at this time – down from the off-season price of P200 or more (if you’re lucky to find one at all). This year is especially bountiful, and we frequently see enterprising vendors who set up shop on any street corner or sidewalk and sell it for as low as P30. It’s a slice of life in Davao to see these ad hoc durian stalls where the locals congregate to have their fill. Durian is a social fruit, and for many Davaoeños the best way to eat it is with family and friends right at the stall where you bought it. It’s rare to find a lone person doing it; it somehow feels wrong
to eat durian alone. At this time of the year it is not uncommon for people – many of them in office attire – to congregate on the streets to have their durian fix. And what do we talk about during these times? Usually it’s about the durian itself. Masarap! Malagkit! Mapait! Matamis! Dagdagan pa! (It’s good, it’s sticky, it’s bitter, it’s sweet, let’s have some more.) The conversation revolves around how good (or bad) it is, how much the prices have fallen, how we wish the durian season would last longer. And at the end of the binge, each would swear not to eat durian again – a vow quickly broken the next day. Having been transplanted temporarily to Metro Manila because of a job, I miss the simplicity that characterizes
Davao. It’s a highly developed city, and with the former mayor now President of the Republic, Davao has changed quite a bit in the past two years. But it has still retained its small-town vibe and people still find joy in the simplest of things. We still eat durian on the streets, we buy fresh fruits at the market, we take leisurely walks, and we still smile at each other. It’s a slice of life that I wouldn’t exchange for anything in the world. country your credit score from your previous country doesn’t move over with you. For good or ill, you start all over. If you had a credit score that wasn’t so good, this is your second chance to do well. If you had a good score before, no worries, the habits that you exhibited, that gave you that good credit score, will serve you well in Canada. You will soon re-establish a good score here! Maybe you didn’t have a credit score where you came from. If that is the case, you may want to contact us, or speak with your bank or credit union to better understand our credit system. Unfortunately, this article is far too brief to cover it all. What is the first thing that
often happens to a new arrival with respect to credit? They are offered some! “Welcome to Canada. Here, have a credit card!” “Where is the ‘owner’s manual,’” you might ask. Well, there really isn’t one. You do get a “terms and conditions booklet, but it is so thick and full of legal terms, and in very small print, that hardly anybody reads it – including those of us born here! So how do I handle my new Canadian credit? Let’s start with the basics. Get a credit card with a small limit. Start with just $500. That way if you make any financial mistakes the impact will be fairly small as you only have a small credit limit. Sometimes a new arrival to Canada may have problems getting their first credit card. After all, you are brand new here, and the lending agencies
don’t really know who you are. You may want to look at getting a special type of credit card often offered to new arrivals. It is called a secured credit card. Many people are not familiar with this type of credit card, but most banks and credit unions will offer them. This is how they work: you go to a bank and ask them for a secured credit card. You then give them some money to hold as “security” (hence the name secured), maybe $250. They will then take this money and put it in a trust account in your name and hold it for you. In exchange for the $250 they will give you a credit card for $500. The amount may vary – I am just using this amount as an example. Congratulations, you now have your first Canadian credit card! You can use this card just See KIDS p5

Sexually transmitted infections Ate Anna: Can you please tell me about sexually transmitted infections? What can I do to protect myself? Signed, A Reader Dear Reader: Great question! A sexually transmitted infection (STI) is an illness that can be passed from one person to another through sexual contact. Some STIs are spread when infected body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal or anal fluids get passed to another person during vaginal, oral or anal sex. Other STIs are spread by touching an infected area of skin, or by sharing personal body items such as needles. There are many kinds of sexually transmitted infections. Some STIs can be cured with antibiotics or special lotions. Examples of curable STIs are chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. Unfortunately, some STIs are viruses and do not have cures; people who have them will need to manage their illness throughout their life with medication and other strategies. Examples of some viral STIs are herpes, genital warts, and HIV. Many people who have STIs show symptoms like rashes, sores or pain in their genital area. However, many others who have an STI do not have symptoms. This is why it is important for people who are sexually active to get tested regularly. STI testing is free with your Manitoba Health Card, and can be done with regular health care provider. If you do not feel comfortable asking for a test, you can get STI tests at any community health centre, or at many walk-in clinics. Klinic and Nine Circles Community Health Centre each have special STI clinics designed to make you as comfortable as possible. An STI test includes providing
a urine (pee) sample, a blood sample, and sometimes a swab of the genital area or a visual inspection. If you have questions about these, you can ask the person giving you the test to answer them for you. Most tests take a few days to get the results. If STIs are found, your health care provider will contact you to discuss this. You can tell them how best to contact you. They take privacy very seriously, and will only contact you in the ways you have asked. If an STI is found, they will talk to you about treatment and management options. For some STIs, the health care provider will need information from you about your past sexual partners; this is so they can be contacted and advised to go for testing themselves. In these cases, your name will never be used when they contact your past sexual partners. You can reduce your chances of getting an STI by using safer sex supplies, including condoms, sex dams or gloves. Information on how to use these correctly can be found on our website at www. serc.mb.ca. Thank you for your question! Ate Anna Ate Anna welcomes your questions and comments. Please write to: Ate Anna, Suite 200226 Osborne St. N., Winnipeg, MB R3C 1V4 or e-mail: info@ serc.mb.ca. Visit us at www.serc. mb.ca. for reliable information and links on the subject of sexuality.
KIDS... From page 4 like any other regular card: use it, get a bill, and pay it off. The financial institution that gave you the card has a year within which to decide, essentially, if they trust you. Within that year they will watch how you use the card; do you stay within its limits? Do you pay it off on time? Are you late? If so, how often are you late and by how many days? Eventually, within the year they will come to a decision. Either they trust you and you are using the card responsibly, or they don’t trust you. If they trust you, then they will give back your $250 security deposit, cancel the $500 secured credit card, and give
you a regular credit card, typically with a larger limit. Be careful; don’t get too large of a card! I wouldn’t start off with anything more than $1000. If things haven’t gone well, they will use the $250 security to pay off any balance owing on the card, return to you any of the $250 that may be left and cancel your card. This isn’t a good outcome as it could be very challenging to get another credit card for quite some time. Secured credit cards aren’t just for new arrivals. Anyone with poor credit can apply for them. They can be a great way for someone with no credit or poor credit to establish a solid credit history. There are many other things that you will need to know
about our financial system. Come back here and I will have another article next month, or you can read past articles to catch up! Birthright citizenship under attack Have you been hearing about “birth tourism?” The Conservative Party of Canada recently voted to include this issue as part of their platform for the upcoming election. For political watchers it is important to realize that this issue is being “trumpeted” as a crisis in the country. The Tories who attended the biennial convention in Halifax in August passed a new party policy, which is non-binding, that calls for legislation to end birthright citizenship in Canada “unless one of the parents of the child born in Canada, is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.” Conservative party leader Andrew Scheer, responded to the criticism of this policy, by stating, “ending birth tourism will be among the objectives of our policy” but only because he was defending the rights of all Canadians. I do enjoy political spin
because you find it on all issues. The villain in this piece is the current Liberal government, which is portrayed as too tolerant. Scheer concludes, “I will not end the core policy that facilitates this. Unlike Justin Trudeau, I will safeguard it against abuse.” (see “Scheer defends birthright policy, saying ending ‘birth tourism’ is objective,” Canadian Press). “Birth tourism” terminology does not appear in the Citizenship Act. Our current Citizenship Act identifies two types of applicants who are eligible to be a citizen of Canada. Canadian citizenship is typically obtained by birth in Canada on the principle of jus soli, or birth abroad when at least one parent is a Canadian citizen, or by adoption by a least one Canadian citizen under the rules of jus sanguinis. The former confers the right of citizenship based upon a birth inside the
country or on a conveyance (ship, airplane) registered as Canadian and the latter is based upon blood relationship. The term “birth tourism” is not a translation of jus soli or even a fair description of birthright citizenship. Rather it is a catch phrase used to imply a negative motive. In other words, pregnant tourists deliberately come to Canada not to visit but to have babies and avail themselves of the right to claim citizenship. This is what is portrayed by the Conservative policy as an abuse. If this sounds familiar, it is. Donald Trump has been preaching against “chain migration,” which he portrays as abuse. If we use “family reunification” then this action would appear reasonable. Trump choice of “chain migration” is intended to feed into the anti-immigration sentiments of his supporters. He is playing to his base. Is there a crisis in Canada
caused by birthright citizenship? No, there are no credible numbers or studies to support such a claim. Janet Dench, the executive director of Canadian Council for Refugees, refutes the claims made by the Conservative Party: “The vast majority of people affected would not at all be people who come for birth tourism reasons.” She points out that many women who give birth in Canada do so while they are waiting for permanent residency status – refugee claimants, and others in limbo. Rather, birthright citizenship “conveys a strong message of inclusion and a commitment to diversity; and it helps guard against the risk of people being born stateless.” The secretary general of Amnesty International Canada says. “There is no evidence that Canada faces a problem with so-called ‘birth tourism’ that would in any way justify making changes to Canadian citizenship laws.”
“Birth tourism” is a non-crisis promoted by the political right to unite the anti-immigration element in the country. It would appear that Andrew Scheer and the opposition Conservatives are going back down the same path set by the Harper government, which is to promote ways of restricting newcomer arrivals, or in this case, citizenship claims by birthplace. Their cries of alarm are, in the words of Shakespeare, “much ado about nothing” and “full of sound and fury signifying nothing.” Michael Scott is a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC, R525678) who has 30 years of experience with Canada Immigration and the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program. Start fresh with feng shui – removing blocks to successful living Feng shui is all about energy: the flow of it, the lack of it, the harmonizing of it, and the cultivation of positive, beneficial energy. When your life is stagnant or bountiful, smooth or bumpy, you can bet there is some cause and that you are living the “effect.” That is the best news there is about feng shui; yes, there is something that can be done about some of the dilemmas you may be facing. And that’s what drew me to feng shui: there is hope and a remedy for many of life’s annoyances. So, how can you move ahead and get past some of the problems of the past? It will take effort, but if you truly want to get ahead and have some beneficial change, you won’t mind because the payoff is more than worth the effort. The checklist below outlines the steps you should take to get energy moving for you in your home – and your life. Do things symbolically and thoughtfully When you clean house before New Year’s Eve, for example, you are symbolically starting fresh and new for the new year. This is just one example of doing things in a symbolic way. Think of things you can do to create a symbolism in your life. Consider buying new artwork in your house that inspires and uplifts you and is symbolic of something you aspire to or anything that represents your new, fresh start. Be present as you make changes and intentional about the outcome you are striving for.
Start new This change can be a new, positive tradition that you do for yourself such as buying a new wallet or purse or flowers each week to place at your foyer. Find something you can do on a regular basis to bring fresh, new energy to your home. Flowers are one of the best ways! Let good energy take root Plants are a wonderful way to get a fresh start. If possible, plant something outdoors, such as bulbs or a tree to get a jump-start on a new direction. Plants symbolize a healthy, vigorous and symbolic start. If that’s not possible, purchase a new, lush and healthy indoor plant. Pick a corner of the house to refresh and renew Plan on doing some renovations to your home to keep the energy of the area fresh and vibrant. Plan some new curtains, wall colour, etc., for this area — or do it in the yard as well — just make a plan to invigorate your home. Choose one room to streamline and de-clutter Resist trying to tackle the whole house. Get a friend or a family member and bring in a box and a trashcan. Throw as many items in the box to donate to charity or in the trash can to throw away that you can. If you still feel motivated try another room in the house. Diagram your house With some graph paper in hand, set about diagramming
your entire house. Next, draw nine equal squares over the house. Each square or sector corresponds to a direction (north, south, etc.). Draw the North-South line on the diagram to locate the north and south sectors. Then, check the front door to determine its facing direction (looking out of the house toward the street); it should be the same as the house. If your house faces one way and the door faces another, remember to determine the facing direction by the most open area on your house. This can be a large picture window, a wide veranda, or the area with the best view of a lake, a river, the ocean, or a major scene, such as view of the city. Welcome opportunities to your house The front of the house is where opportunities originate. If the front of your house needs help, then chances are you might be feeling stuck or without options in your life. For those of you in trailers or manufactured homes, be sure that steps leading up to your house are closed and that the risers are not open otherwise you will be losing valuable opportunities. Now, if your front door faces E, SE, or North, paint it black. If it faces SW, South, or NE paint it red. If your door faces west or NW, paint your door gold (ochre) or purple with silver hardware. The door is your pathway to opportunity… make it a beautiful path! Clear out any items that
make you unhappy or represent loss These items can be anything from cremated pet ashes to an old wedding photo album you kept after a divorce. It could even be chipped dishes. Every time I see a chipped dish, it brings my energy down. Get rid of chipped dishes or scratched or dented pans. The same is true for walls that are scuffed and dirty. Clean them or do a paint touch up. You’ll be amazed at how great you feel when you remove these items. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: What do I do if I live in a house with a hoarder and his family of hoarders? Answer: I have written previously about how I don’t like to do gift certificate consultations. One of the reasons why is because people have to be personally invested in their lives and because we can’t “feng shui” other people. Many times hoarders are that
way because they’re wired to accumulate. Many feel like their things are very personal and that throwing away something is like throwing away a part of themselves. They associate that stack of old magazines with themselves. Here’s the dilemma, though. Hoarding is a serious problem and can affect your health, spirit and psychological well-being. It can also be dangerous, attracting vermin and infestations. You have a right to live in a clean, orderly home, and it’s important you set personal boundaries about what is acceptable to you in your life. Of course, I can’t make the decision for you, but I can tell you that if it were me, I would alert everyone in the household that I have certain household standards that are considered customary and normal, such as living in a clean and orderly home, and that See FENG SHUI p7

Would you give up on your dream if it seemed like the stars were not aligned in your favour far too many times? Would you give up on your dream if it seemed that life is always knocking you down whenever you try to stand up and start over again? To Nancy Santoyo, there is only one answer : Never. Nancy (whom I fondly call “Ate Nanz”) may have drawn out everything that she planned on doing with her life, but she learned that her journey to practice engineering in Canada was not an easy one. She had to go through a lot of setbacks, tough times, unfavourable turns of events and a lot of challenging decisions. But she did not give up, she did not forget what she aspired to be and aspired to do, even if it took her more than 10 years to finally see that P.Eng. designation at the end of her name. Her remarkable journey of resilience and hard work will make you think twice about giving up. The beginning Growing up, Nancy enjoyed nature, the countryside and vastness of Batangas province where typical activities included climbing trees, hiking with friends, gathering firewood for cooking, laundry and swimming by the river banks back in the days when the rivers were pure and free of pollution. “I do not mind hard work, but I made sure I had fun doing it and if possible, with friends,” Nancy mused. “Attending Sunday mass is a regular family activity, where at some point I was a member of a church choir, singing during the mass. Faith in God is one important factor in my life and it is the foundation of who I am in my journey in life,” she continued. The inspiration Nancy grew up in a big family with five sisters and four brothers. Losing her father when she was just 20, made her stronger and mature more quickly. While both her parents served as her inspiration, it was her mother, whom she considers her guiding light, mentor and soul mate, who instilled in her young mind that valuing time, hard work and education are keys to a successful life, along with kindness and generosity. She, along with her older brothers, helped their mother to ensure her younger siblings would go to college. A father’s dream To have an engineer in the family was her father’s dream. It was because of this dream that Nancy decided to pursue engineering. “Engineering was not an easy path, as I don’t have a sharp mind for mathematics. However, I know that patience and hard work pays off, so I was determined

to exert more effort and to rise up to every difficult challenge that comes with completing an engineering degree.” Her father passed away before she completed her studies. And though he didn’t live long enough to see the realization of his dream, “I knew in my heart, I have fulfilled his dream,” said Nancy. Early career With a freshly inked bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Sto. Tomas, Nancy worked as a Project Engineer (Philippines) for a heavy engineering and construction company in her home province. She then accepted a job as a construction engineer in the oil and gas industry in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Her training as an outside process operator for Caltex Oil through a refinery development program, while still attending university, prepared her well for these opportunities. New beginnings In 1993, she came to Canada from Malaysia to join her husband, Victor to start a family. After two months as a landed immigrant, she found a job as a board developer, then quality inspector, for a printed circuit board (PCB) company and while there, she took short night courses on Autocad at Red River College. It was around this time that she was also expecting their first child. “I remember that in early December 1994, while taking the final examination at Red River College, I was praying that I would not have my baby at the school,” she said. Her prayers were answered, as on Christmas eve, her first son, Emmanuel, was born. The journey After four years of working at the PCB company, Nancy moved to Standard Aero to work as a Quality Inspector. It was around this time in 1997 that she applied to get her credentials assessed by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM). The only option back then to be considered academically qualified was to take confirmatory exams. Though she was aware that writing the exams while working full time and raising children would be extremely difficult, she still took the first test and unfortunately, failed. “In 2001, I decided to stop trying to write the examination and just focused on raising my two young sons and work full time in the hope that the right time would come for me to try again,” she recalled. The following year, while giving birth to her youngest son, she suffered from hypertension and heart failure, which nearly cost her life.

Nancy Santoyo, P. Eng. – More than a decade in the making “I am thankful to God, I survived and bounced back to new life and normal health. This changed my outlook and perspective in life – to only enjoy the life of being a mother and wife and not to pursue my professional engineer aspirations. My family is far more important than anything in the world,” said Nancy. She eventually recovered and went back to work. She remembered that while working, “I felt that the dream of becoming a P. Eng was still strong within my heart and mind. So, in 2004, I applied for another assessment and was assigned 10 engineering courses (in-lieu of confirmatory exams) at the University of Manitoba (U of M) that had to be completed by 2011.” Nancy successfully completed the first course, but a change in work schedule suddenly left her with no choice, but to discontinue studies. Three years later, in 2007, the desire to get her engineering designation returned when she moved to a new role as Configuration Control Specialist (an engineering related role). For the third time, she contacted APEGM and sought an extension of the completion due date. Her employer gave her the opportunity to go back to university and continue her dream of becoming a P. Eng. “I set my goal and worked hard to take advantage of the opportunity given to me. I took one course each term while working full time,” she said. She was halfway through completing the assigned courses when she was yet again faced with health challenges that would require surgery with a minimum six weeks to recover. Knowing that the extension period would lapse with her time away from university, she wrote a letter to APEGM to extend the due date for another term. Showing the progress of her time at university, APEGM granted the request. In 2013, she completed all the assigned courses and was deemed academically-qualified by the association and was invited to register as an EngineerIn-Training (EIT). Successively, she met all the EIT requirements within a year, thus, in 2014, after over a decade of pursuing a dream, she finally got her Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) designation. The ride was rough and the journey was long, but the immense feeling of fulfillment was all worth it, not to mention that the designation paved the way for her immediate promotion to Production Engineer at Standard Aero. “My journey to becoming a

She added, “becoming a P. Eng, has given a sense of fulfilment in life, I valued the education I earned from the Philippines and made it stronger and a valuable foundation of who I am now. I’m happy that the effort and investment of our parents getting us educated in the Philippines was not wasted. Becoming a P. Hardworking, faithful and family oriented Guezz Lois Quizon was awarded the 2018 ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence last June based on her high school GPA, a group interview, and an essay in response to the question, “How do values and cultural stereotypes affect your Filipino identity in Canada?” The following essay was her submission. Filipinos are considered to be some of the hardest working people in Canada. Whether it is mopping up the floors at restaurants, or collaborating with others in group projects, Filipinos are known to put in their best efforts in everything that they do. This stereotype, of all Filipinos being hardworking and diligent individuals, has encouraged me to do my best in not only my job at McDonald’s, where I received Employee of the Month in August 2017, but especially in my school
NANCY... From page 8 success to her family, Standard Aero, Craig Thorn (supervisor and mentor) and friends at U of M, who are now engineering interns. “I thank them for all the help during tough examination days. Without them I would not be able to do it. Also, I encourage others to do the report and complete the journey to P. Eng., to start another chapter in their lives - serving and growing with the profession and to mentor others.” Parting words For assessment candidates: “If I managed to do it, anyone can do it! Believe, have faith and never give up! No one will do it for you, except yourself. Act if you can as time will pass and what we do in the passing of time defines who we are tomorrow. I live by these words, ‘Be grateful for all blessings in life. Thank those who were with you on your journey in life. Accept challenges with
work as well. Since school is so important for us, the children and future Filipino leaders in Canada, I have strived to always do the best I possibly can in my school work. Although it’s difficult to be motivated at times, since Canada does not place massive emphasis on being on the honour roll, I have always had this goal engraved in my mind to always do better. These values and cultural stereotypes effectively influence me, as a Filipino, to put my best foot forward. Additionally, Filipinos are known to be faithful, believing in their religion with a passion (Abrugar). I am a proud Catholic, who continually goes to church to celebrate the words of Jesus Christ. Sadly, a great quantity of my Canadian friends do not go to church, which is off putting. However, this does not hinder me from my faith since God is
a positive perspective and give back.’ Believe that ‘The measure of success is not in never failing but in rising whenever we fall.’” For new EITs and P.Engs: “Being a professional engineer is a continuous process of learning, sharing, growing, mentoring, volunteering and service to others. Being a P. Eng. alone does not define who a person is, but the good character that goes with being a P. Eng. does.” By anyone’s measure, Nancy is an extraordinary example of resilience, determination and hard work. Despite facing overwhelming odds, she never gave up, she never quit and she succeeded in chasing her dream. Ethel Clemente-Fernandez is a professional engineer registered in the province of Manitoba. such a crucial part of my family as Filipinos. I have been brought up to believe in Christ, and I read the Bible every single night to enforce my faith. Despite that, my family is only able to go to church every second Sunday. The reason for this is that unfortunately my mom has work every second weekend. We generally never go to church without my whole family being there. This is because going to church involves the whole family; no one just stays home, to watch TV, due to the fact that Filipinos are so family oriented. Filipinos are notorious for choosing their family over everything (Abrugar). I understand this stereotype and can confirm that it applies to myself. This is because I value my family so much, and love them with a great passion. I have learned, through my eleven years of experience here in Canada, that my family is always there without fail, and they will never leave. My friends here have
come and gone throughout the years. Nonetheless, through thick and the thin, my parents and my little brother have always stayed by my side and assisted me when I encountered problems. My parents have continually provided everything that I’ve ever needed and more, just so I can obtain the best future. The biggest sacrifice that my parents have ever made in their lives is leaving the Philippines, so we could all prosper in life. I knew that they moved, not only to gain their independence, as my parents and I lived with my grandparents in the Philippines, but also so I could have a better future here in this foreign land. In spite of the amazing things parents do for their children, my Canadian friends often put their friends first and their families second. Nevertheless, I have learned, through my parents always supporting me in everything that I do, that it is always my family who is first. To conclude, the values and
cultural stereotypes of Filipinos being hardworking, faithful and family oriented have greatly influenced my Filipino identity here in Canada. Although I left the Philippines at such a young age of only six, and have been in Canada for over eleven years, I am still astonishingly able to speak Tagalog and even Kapangpangan. My country, the Philippines, makes me proud and honoured, to be a Filipino. Home Remedies: Relief from tension-type headaches Nearly everyone is familiar with the pain of tension-type headaches. Over-the-counter or prescription medications may help, but healthy lifestyle choices can help you head off the pain. Start with the basics, including diet, exercise and relaxation. Make healthy lifestyle choices A healthy lifestyle can promote good overall health and help prevent tension-type headaches. Here are the basics: • Eat healthy foods Don’t skip meals, especially breakfast, and drink plenty of water each day. • Exercise regularly Exercise releases chemicals in your body that block pain signals to the brain. With your doctor’s permission, choose any exercise you enjoy, whether that’s walking, swimming or cycling. Start slowly; exercising too vigorously can trigger some types of headaches. • Get enough sleep Wake up and go to bed at the same time every day — even on weekends. Relax before you go to bed. If you don’t fall asleep within 15 minutes, get up and read or do something soothing until you’re drowsy. Avoid medications (including some headache
medications) that contain caffeine and other stimulants that can affect sleep. • Avoid excess caffeine While caffeine may help curb headaches, heavy daily caffeine use — more than 400 milligrams of caffeine a day (about four regular cups of coffee) — can cause headaches and irritability. Chronic caffeine use also increases the risk of headaches, as does quitting caffeine altogether — whether you quit suddenly or cut back gradually. • Quit smoking The nicotine in cigarette smoke reduces blood flow to the brain, and triggers a reaction in the nerves at the back of the throat, which may lead to a headache. Keep stress under control Stress and tension-type headaches often go hand in hand. To reduce stress, try these simple tips: • Simplify your life Don’t look for ways to squeeze more activities or chores into the day; instead find things you can leave out. • Take a break If you feel overwhelmed, a few slow stretches or a quick walk may renew your energy levels. • Exhale When you feel your stress
levels rising, take several deep breaths and count to 10. • Adjust your attitude Think positive thoughts. Don’t think that something is impossible; tell yourself that you are up to the challenge. • Let go Don’t worry about things you can’t control. Ease muscle tension Tense muscles can trigger tension-type headaches. Apply heat or ice to relieve tense neck and shoulder muscles. Use a heating pad set on low, a hot water bottle, a hot shower or bath, a warm compress, or a hot towel. Or apply an ice pack (wrapped in a cloth) or a cool washcloth across the forehead. Massage also can relieve muscle tension — and sometimes headache pain. Gently massage your temples, scalp, neck and shoulders with your fingertips, or gently stretch the neck. Relax Take time to unwind every day. Try this deep-breathing exercise: • Lie down on your back or sit comfortably with your feet flat on the floor; hands in your lap. • Imagine yourself in a peaceful place, perhaps a beach or quiet forest. Keep this scene in
your mind. • Inhale and exhale slowly and deeply for at least 10 minutes. • When you’re done, sit quietly for a minute or two. Try to practice these breathing exercises or another form of relaxation every day. Keep a headache diary A diary may help you determine what triggers your tension-type headaches. Note when your headaches start, your
activities, how long the headaches last and anything that provides relief. The diary may help you spot patterns in your daily habits that contribute to your tensiontype headaches. Look for improvements in your headaches as you make additional healthy lifestyle changes. By Mayo Clinic Staff – Courtesy Mayo Clinic News Network
will be implemented within government-operated locations in parks including campsites in campgrounds, outdoor spaces adjacent to yurts and vacation cabins, canoe routes and trails along with remote outdoor locations as well as backcountry trails and campsites. Certain exceptions will apply to medical cannabis along with private residences and cottage lots located within provincial parks. There will
also be exceptions surrounding commercial establishments, where owners and operators can establish their own rules surrounding cannabis use for their patrons. By establishing pre-set fines, it allows those charged to voluntarily pay their fine without having to appear in court, said Cullen, adding this ensures less court time spent on cannabisrelated offences for judicial officials and police officers.
Hon. Dr. Rey Pagtakhan to receive award The Canadian Race Relations Foundation, will present the Community Champion Special Award to former federal cabinet minister Dr. Rey Pagtakhan for his significant contribution and commitment toward “the advancement of social cohesion and positive race relations.” “I am honoured and humbled, indeed,” said Dr. Pagtakhan. He will receive the award during the foundation’s biennial Canadian Race Relations Awards of Excellence Gala Dinner on Thursday, 27 September 2018 at Delta Hotel in Winnipeg.

The new sanctions will require novice, supervising and other drivers to be able to pass a drug-screening test while having control of a motor vehicle. The pre-set fines largely mirror similar penalties in place for alcohol-related offences, Cullen said. Tickets for these offences
range from $113 to $2,542, based on the severity of the offence. “As a government, we understand that drugged driving is every bit as dangerous as drunk driving,” “The new drugrelated restrictions for novice drivers ensure that we treat cannabis just as seriously as we treat alcohol for drivers that are just learning to safely operate a vehicle,” said Cullen.
Kahit siguro
No health, no wealth.

Panalo! Nabalita kasi na sinabi ni Prime Minister Justin Trudeau na “no NAFTA deal is better than a bad deal.” “It is up to Canada to get on board.” Take it or leave it.”

elections.

Ano ba ‘yan? Smuggling is smuggling. Smuggling is illegal.
May katutubong batas – the law of supply and demand. *** Ang nangyari ay maliwanag na isang wake-up call that history might repeat itself.
Solenn Heusaff plays favourites For one of the most popular faces in Philippine showbiz today, she doesn’t want to be labelled an “It Girl.” In fact, Solenn Heussaff doesn’t care much for the title. Pilipino Express News Magazine recently caught up with the actress/singer during the Pinoy Food Trip festival held on September 2 and 3, in which Heussaff was the special guest. “I didn’t really like it when people started calling me an “It Girl,” Heussaff said frankly. “It’s because I don’t get what’s “it.” We are all unique. I am me, you are you, different people have their own uniqueness.” It is probably this uniqueness of hers that allows her to wear different creative hats: acting, singing, hosting, painting, fashion designing and make-up artistry. She also tried her hand in the restaurant business with a few friends. “I think I’m more of an artist. I get bored fast. So I
need to do several things. One thing I want to try is dancing. Although I think it’s a lost cause (laughs). My body can’t move the way I want it to.” Currently, Heussaff is busy with the launch of her line of rugs. She said she loves interior designing, and rugs are still considered art. Her latest exhibit was for street children, where 20 per cent of her income went to the Kalipay Foundation of Bacolod City. To continue her support for the foundation, Heussaff is teaching art classes to children, and having them immortalize their artworks in a humongous rug. “It’s called Kids Take ♥Art, as kids learn to give back and help other children.” On the showbiz side of things, Heussaff is busy with a new TV series with popular actor Dingdong Dantes. She plays a villain this time, and asks that people understand that her hateful role, is just a role.
“Unlike my role as Cassiopeia in Encantadia, you will hate me in this new series. I’m also doing a fantasy movie with political flavour, together with Sam Milby, Lovi Poe and Angeline Quinto. We start shooting this October, and it will be shown next year.” Heussaff said she likes to share her everyday life (sometimes her husband Nico Bolzico also co-stars) on Instagram and she has just started her own Youtube channel. To end our fun interview with this kikay star, I asked her to play favourites with me: Favourite colour – Black Food – Sinigang Drink – Negroni, an iconic Italian cocktail with gin, vermouth rosso, campari and orange peels Song – It’s My Life by Bon Jovi Dance music – Hiphop Movie – American History X (1998) with Edward Norton
In The Heights Recycled Talent Productions recently presented the Tony award winning Broadway musical In The Heights by Broadway’s own musical master Lin ManuelMiranda of Hamilton fame last August 23, 25, and 26 to a soldout crowd. It was the first musical production in Winnipeg’s newest state of the art theatre – Seven Oaks Performing Arts Centre (SOPAC) at 711 Jefferson Avenue. In The Heights tells the universal story of a mostly Latino community in New York’s Washington Heights neighbourhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It is a community on the brink of change where lifetime friends and neighbours who aspire for the elusive American dream make discoveries about each other, themselves and what it means to be home. Winnipeg talents – Robin Quintana, Alanna De Luca, Eliseo Pineda, Shae-Lynn Papiz,
Moises Duot, Alexis Stasiuk, Jane Jugo, Kyra Giesbrecht, Solita Desrosiers, Kristen Koshelanyk, Joyce Jugo, Luisa Manalili and Sarah Mitchell led the talented cast. Recycled Talent Productions is a newly formed non-profit amateur musical theatre company operating out of the Garden City area. It is the vision of Dan Hall, educator and musical director and producer at École Seven Oaks Middle School in the Seven Oaks School division. Dan saw a company such as Recycled Talent Productions as an opportunity for people share their many talents again both on and off the stage. The entire company is made up of community volunteers who have come together for the love and enjoyment of musical theatre. Seven Oaks Performing Arts Centre at 711 Jefferson Avenue seats over 500 people and boasts a stage the size of Rainbow Stage in Kildonan Park.
