WINNIPEG – “When the Speaker of the House phones, asking you to meet her at the Legislature, you go,” explains Flor Marcelino, MLA for Logan. Marcelino went on to describe the “complete surprise” awaiting her and a handful of other past and present female MLAs and officers who were honoured on August

20 for forging new pathways for women by holding positions traditionally held by men in the legislature. The Trailblazers of the First 100 Years Wall was unveiled in a small, surprise ceremony to celebrate the achievements of women who “changed the landscape” of the Manitoba

Legislative Assembly. In 1916, Manitoba women were first granted the right to vote and run for public office. Over the next 100 years, only 51 women have been elected to the Manitoba Legislature as MLAs and a small number of women have served as Officers of the Legislative See TRAILBLAZERS p4

Canada ditches family immigration lottery The Government of Canada said on August 20 that it is getting rid of the family reunification lottery and going back to a firstcome, first-served immigration policy as it looks to quadruple times the number of applications accepted when the program reopened in 2014, and the cap was set at 5000 applications. Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that the Government of Canada will See CANADA p9

Canada will accept up to 20,000 applications for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents in 2019. The method of selecting applications will return to the former “first-come, first-served” policy, replacing the current random lottery method.

I’ve been doing more than my fair share of traveling for almost a year now, mostly between Manila and Davao City. Because of this I have become more aware of the differences between the two places that I call home. I was born and raised in Malabon, but moved to Davao City in 1990 – meaning I’ve lived here for more than half my life. Here’s a short list that I call, “What Manila has that Davao City doesn’t.” Garbage on the streets One of the most disconcerting things I keep seeing in the Metro are people throwing little bits of trash right on the streets. Candy wrappers, plastic bags, plastic cups, even whole bags of fast food scraps. In my daily walks I pass through a highly populated area and I always see trash littered all over – with no apparent attempt on the part of the local government to clean it up until late at night. The residents feel the result concretely; when it rains, the nearby creek overflows and floods a significant portion of the main road. When this happen I hear them complain and blame the government, but really, it’s everyone’s fault for throwing trash indiscriminately. Traffic jams Ever since Mayor Rodrigo Duterte won the presidency,

PILIPINO EXPRESS

Davao City’s streets have been getting more and more crowded. But at least you can count on it happening at predictable times of the day – morning and afternoon rush hour. In Metro Manila, traffic jams are the norm and occur at virtually all times of the day. I travel to work on EDSA and it takes me, on a good day, 1.5 hours to move a mere 16 kilometers. That means I am on the road at least three hours every weekday. I talk to drivers and commuters and I gather that the problem is a complex mix of too many cars, an inefficient mass transport system, drivers who don’t follow traffic rules, and more. Air pollution One of the biggest reasons my wife and I decided that she and the kids would not be moving to Manila with me is the poor quality of air. I think there has been some improvement over the past few years, but I still see haze in the air whenever I go out. I also still see a few vehicles belching black smoke, making me ask if someone is actually checking them. Crime I think there has also been a marked improvement in this area since President Duterte came in, but that doesn’t stop me from taking multiple precautions whenever I go out. My backpack

SEPTEMBER 1 - 15, 2018

What Manila has that Davao doesn’t becomes a chestbag to keep thieves from reaching in. My wallet and phone go in one of my backpack’s pockets so I can keep them close. I never place my phone on a table at a restaurant, and most recently, I actually bought a theft-free bag so I can be more at ease. In contrast, you can leave your things in restaurants to save a table and not worry that they would be stolen. People in a rush One of the things I looked forward to when I began working in Metro Manila was the time I could spend with old friends, many of them I hadn’t seen in decades. I quickly learned, however, that this was more difficult than I had imagined. Most of us lived and worked in different places, and arranging a meet-up with more than one person was almost impossible. And in the few times we succeeded, many of us had to rush off because we were afraid of getting caught in traffic. Even the positive things Manila has often become clouded in my mind because a lot of them are there at the expense of the rest of the country. For example, the MRT and LRT are good ways to move around –even though they are often crowded – but what most commuters don’t know is

that their fare is subsidized by government, meaning taxpayers from as far away as Tawi-Tawi get to shoulder the burden of keeping Metro Manilans moving. Things are looking up in Mindanao, however, and I’ve noticed that in my travels. If you drive from Davao City to, say, Mati in Davao Oriental, the road is usually four lanes, and in some areas six lanes. This has been a huge relief for motorists because the drive on the previous two-lane roads was always dangerous since they had to overtake slow-moving vehicles and drive on the opposite track, facing oncoming vehicles. Luzon, meanwhile, still has a lot of two-lane highways. I guess what this means is that government is trying to make the rest of the country catch up with Metro Manila. I hope, however, that it doesn’t get to the point where we end up having the same problems the Metro has. Mom’s back-to-school balancing act Working women have come a long way from being perceived as responsible “housewives” and “housekeepers.” The turning point in women’s employment history began in the First World War when they began to enter the workforce to cover for the enlisted men in military. While the society’s expectation was for the working women to return to their domestic duties at the end of the Second World War, many women declined to stay home after the war in the first half of the 20th century and that decision to remain in the workforce triggered significant social and cultural change, which paved the way for the women of today. In today’s generation, however, the workforce represented by women has different challenges, particularly for those who have to juggle their family and career demands. Women now represent nearly half of the Canadian workforce. Statistics Canada released a report in 2017 indicating that the percentage of mothers who participated in the workforce increased from 36 per cent in 1986 to 47 per cent in 2017. The report also indicated that working

mothers still take on the bulk of household chores and child-care responsibilities. In reality, working mothers do not get a day off as their normal work day extends throughout the rest of their day at home, taking care of family needs, whether it is related to preparing meals, driving their children to sports or activities, or helping their children with homework. The days are long and for a mom with a full-time job. Feelings of guilt and stress can set in because there is constant divided attention between work and family. While it is a huge struggle for a lot of moms, the key is good planning and getting organized in order to find a suitable balance between work and family. Here are few tips: Prep the night before for the morning Getting organized the night before saves a lot of time in the morning. Some of the things that can be done include packing the kids’ lunches and getting their clothes ready. A personal favourite routine of mine is having my kids shower the night before so they are fresh and ready to go the next morning. The night

before school would also be a good time to go over the schedule for the following days that week to ensure that whatever is planned for the next few days are taken care of. Be guilt-free For a mom it is tough not to feel guilty about how your limited attention and time are impacting your family. However, there is an advantage that comes from being able to work a fulltime job as it can be benefitting in terms of being able to afford other educational opportunities and extra-curricular activities and money saved for college. Finding the best of both worlds can be an effective way to let go of guilt. Create a calendar Keeping track of school and after-school activities can definitely be a struggle especially when there are multiple children in your household. One thing I have started that I find very helpful is maintaining a schedule in Google Calendar to help keep track of all the activities that our family has. Another helpful idea is to create a “family command centre” where a magnetic or cork board can be set up for posting any important reminders and important documents from school.

Make time for me-time Because as a mom, your time is divided between your home and your job, it is important to manage your energy well. This is why it is so important to fit in valuable “me-time” in order to recharge from the stress and multiple demands on your time. It would be very hard to manage the home and spend time with your family if you are a grumpy and tired mom. Lastly, it is very important to acknowledge that it is physically impossible to be everywhere, however, if you do not prioritize and organize your time, there could be risk spending a lot of time on things that are of little value. As family must come first, focusing on planning how you want to spend your time must be given some attention. Projected processing times for immigration How many have wondered about immigration processing times? If you explain that the process may take several years, many are dismayed and some are angry. In the past, IRCC advised that sponsorship applications from abroad would take 13 months on the average from outside Canada and 26 months from inside the country. These numbers were not the most encouraging but provided some indication of the length of time expected. The department recently announced a new approach for determining processing times for Canadian permanent resident applications received on or after July 31, 2018. First, the announcement does not mean that those applications received before July 31, 2018 will not be processed. Rather they will be processed in the old way and form part of a backlog of submissions. The difference is that those in the cue will continue

to be processed in terms of historical processing times. IRCC explains that the new approach is forward looking as opposed to estimations based on historical data. In a press release published on August 9, 2018, the department announced a new projected times system, which covers the following types of permanent resident applications: • Sponsorship of parents and grandparents; • Provincial nominee (nonExpress Entry); • Quebec skilled workers; • Start-up visa; and • Humanitarian and compassionate cases. Projected processing times will show applicants how long their applications are expected to take, under normal conditions, based on the day of submission (AOR date). This system involves updating processing times monthly.

Canada’s Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen praised this new approach. He said, “This update is an important one to ensure our immigration processing times are as accurate as possible and to help clients better prepare to move to Canada if their application is approved.” Processing times for submissions on or after July 31, 2018 are as follows: • Sponsorship of parents and grandparents – 20 to 24 months; • Provincial nominee (nonExpress Entry) – 15 to 19 months; • Quebec skilled workers – 15 to 17 months; • Start-up visa –12 to 16 months; • Humanitarian and compassionate cases – 22 to 36 months. (Processing times checked on August 10, 2018) There are differences between the old historical processing times and that new projected ones. Under the old system the processing times were based upon

the AOR date and the length of time it took to process 80 per cent of the applications in the past year. The new projected processing time measurement will depend on the number of applications waiting and how long IRCC expects to process 80 per cent of pending applications. In both cases the time starts with the submission of a complete application, but the difference is in the use of projected (future-oriented) numbers. IRCC has been working on transparency and reducing backlogs. We have noted a change in the actual processing times for sponsorship applications from both inside and from outside Canada. With monthly adjustments, the projected processing times will give users a clearer picture of how long they should reasonably wait for the completion of the permanent resident processing. The change is first conceptual and secondly dependent upon departmental action. There are, of course, a number of things that impact on

all immigration applications: the type of application submitted; the completeness of the application; how quickly IRCC will attend to the old applications in the backlog; how easily the applicants’ information can be verified; how long it takes applicants to respond to requests or concerns raised by IRCC officials; and other factors. It is important for users to do their part to improve the quality of their submissions and responses. But first, we applaud IRCC’s commitment to transparency and quicker processing times, including the use of projected processing times. Are you Filipino? Mentorship has always been one of the key pillars of ANAK as an organization. From the beginning, the purpose of ANAK’s Kapatid Program has been to assist Filipino youth academically, socially, and culturally in Canadian society. I was introduced to the program in 2007, when I joined in as a volunteer mentor. I then got more involved by becoming an ANAK member, and helped run the program with the mentorship committee. Even though I was already working full-time as a gas-turbine mechanic, I found a way to fit the Kapatid Program into my schedule. I loved every minute of it; from homework help, to preparing workshops, organizing group activities, or just letting loose and getting to reconnect culturally with my own heritage. Collaborating ideas with fellow mentors and connecting with the mentees also helped me gain valuable skills that were transferable outside of the program. The community involvement, the newly developed skill set, and the rewarding experiences that I gained in the program made me realize that I wanted to become a teacher; an Industrial-Arts teacher in particular. This allowed me to include my previous handson experiences as a mechanic into the classroom.

In 2017, I completed my degree in education and received my teaching certificate. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of substitute teaching many kids, in many schools, in all grade levels, and from many different backgrounds. Once in a while, I get a student or two looking at me with a curious stare. That is when they usually go and ask me what I think they’re going to ask me, “Are you Filipino?” Sometimes I throw a question back at them and ask them, “Why do you ask?” But, if I see that they’re really elated to find out, I immediately and proudly say, “Yes! I am Filipino.” The student(s) then usually respond, “Me too!” Even though I am only a substitute, I can see that they still view me as a role model and are proud to be Filipino themselves when they find out that I am too. These experiences only emphasize more for me how representation matters, and how ANAK’s culturally oriented mentorship plays an important role in boosting self-esteem in youth and instils pride in our heritage. This is like wise with mentors too. The interactions between mentors and mentees are mutually beneficial. Through the Kapatid Program I became a Kuya to my many Kapatids through the years. This upcoming school year,

Andrew getting ready to facilitate a fun filled Kapatid Program session the Kapatid Program is taking on a new format based on digital storytelling. This form of storytelling is a modern way of capturing our oral history or oral tradition using video, photographs, as well as other art forms, along with narration. The mentors will assist the mentees with finding, developing, and expressing their stories through this medium. The process of

creating these stories will allow the mentees to explore, reflect, internalize, and share their Filipino-Canadian experiences as they see it. These are their stories and so as a community, these are our stories. ANAK is currently recruiting volunteers who are interested in becoming mentors for this year’s Kapatid Program. Volunteer training will begin this fall

with Kapatid Program sessions starting in the New Year. Please e-mail info@anak.ca or signup at www.anak.ca. Andrew Aviso is a dedicated volunteer and long-serving member of ANAK. He is the current HR director and the chair of the mentorship committee. He is excited for the upcoming mentorship program to get under way.

10 habits of highly successful people Welcome to another brand new month fellow dreamers! I don’t know about you, but I am definitely in need of a motivation boost to ensure I’m still on track with my goals. In this article, I’d like to share with you 10 habits of highly successful people. Now, are these the only habits? Of course not. These are just a few of the top habits I have observed that my role models have and continue to work on for themselves. I’m happy to share them with all of you. Let’s get started! Highly successful people: 1. Know their priorities – They know that their time is limited and they know how to spend it well by focusing on the important things in life. 2. Have a morning routine – A great day starts with a good morning. It is important to kick start the day on the right note to prepare for the day ahead. 3. Make health & exercise a priority – Research says that a healthy lifestyle greatly contributes to improved productivity, motivation, and happiness. Highly successful people understand that they need to take care of their bodies, no matter how busy they are. 4. Never stop learning – There’s always so much more to learn and, even if one is already

successful, they still like to challenge themselves and stretch their mind. 5. Practice consistency – It is not often that achievements arise out of pure luck. For the most part, the wins were a result of consistent efforts and hard work. 6. Follow through – When they say they’re going to do something, they do it. They do not make up excuses or blame it on external factors. They own up to their ideas and see it through. 7. Believe in themselves – “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.” Successful people know that they need to be their own cheerleader and work on their self-confidence to lift themselves up. 8. Are not afraid to fail – They know that mistakes happen

and that it is another opportunity to learn and grow stronger. I love this quote that says “While one is holding back because they feel inferior, another is making mistakes and becoming superior” (Henry C. Link) 9. Have a support system – Whether it’s family, friends, a partner, etc., having a support system is vital to success. No one person can be successful on their own, and if so, it would not be as fulfilling and joyful. 10. Are grateful – Successful people are aware of the blessings in their life. They know that there is beauty of all sorts and sizes that they can be thankful for and celebrate. Therefore, they feel successful on a regular basis and know not to be greedy and yearn for more and more. These are just a handful of habits that I’ve noticed my role

models practice on a regular basis. They inspire me to be better and do better. I am always amazed at how much we can learn from one another if we open our eyes. From dreamer to dreamer, I hope that you feel a boost of

motivation today to keep up the hustle. Work hard, be kind, and love more. Until next time! Yvanne is a Program Manager with Career Trek Inc. She’s also an Independent Pop, R&B/Soul Singer-Songwriter.

If you’ve ever read anything about feng shui, you know that the proper flow and movement of energy in the home, called chi, can make all the difference between happiness, success and prosperity. And part of that flow directly relates to the way furniture is placed. When furniture isn’t arranged properly, this can create blockages, unpleasant surprises, and lack of growth and success. Read these tips for each room in the house on how to maximize your home’s energy – and your good fortune – with good feng shui furniture placement. The Living Room This is the room that represents the whole home. It can be considered the small version of whole home’s footprint, making it a very important room. This is also the room that has the most influence on the whole family, as this is where the family gathers together. It’s vital that this room

PILIPINO EXPRESS

is arranged to invite energy movement, compatibility and family harmony. The best arrangement for furniture is the conversational arrangement. This is when chairs and sofas are arranged to face one another versus at right angles to each other. This encourages togetherness and conversation, especially when the TV or a fireplace is perpendicular to the seating area. The conversational arrangement puts the emphasis on people versus focal points, such as the TV or fireplace. It also pulls furniture away from walls. When furniture is pulled out into the room, chi can move freely and smoothly around the furniture, and this helps improve prosperity, health and happiness. It also fosters opportunities to come to the family. The Bedroom Second to the living room

SEPTEMBER 1 - 15, 2018

The essential feng shui guide to furniture arrangement is the bedroom. Contrary to the living room, the bedroom is a place where having good, solid support behind the bed helps improve health and sounder, secure sleep. The bed should always be positioned so that the occupants can see the view of the door from the bed. When a bed is placed on the same wall as the door, unpleasant surprises can befall the residents. It’s also important that the bed is not on the same wall as a toilet, shower, tub or sink. It is fine if it shares a wall with the bathroom as long as those plumbing fixtures are not on that same wall. If the bedroom is designed in such a way that there is no solid wall for the bed to be placed on, then turn the bed on an angle, again, so that the occupants can see the door from bed. A large dresser placed behind the bed in the corner can serve as a wall.

The Dining Room The dining room represents the wealth of the family. It’s where food is shared, and because it is, it is also considered a room that also represents health. It’s a symbol of family togetherness, holidays and special occasions, so it needs to look appealing and tasteful. Tables should be solid and sit in the centre of the room. The room should have a look of wealth and abundance, so lighting is essential. The head of the family should sit at the end furthest from the entrance to the room. That is because that is the command position. The Home Office If the home office is used to pay bills or homework occasionally, then its placement isn’t as critical. However, when the office is used as a workplace or where a business is run, it’s essential that the office is set up to encourage prosperity and the arrival of new opportunities for business, such as sales, new clients, etc. That’s why all desks should be pulled out into the room executive style. While it may be easier to push them against the wall because all the wall plugs are there, try to avoid this. Pulling the desk out in the room will help bring more prosperity versus representing obstacles, the way a desk pushed against a wall does. Another critical arrangement concept is that the desk has a solid wall behind it like the bed does. This symbolizes the person at the desk having support in their business and their work endeavours. Lastly, a home office should have a generously sized desk and a full executive chair to

ensure plenty of room and comfort while working – and to symbolize success! FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My friend’s son has won all kinds of medals for swimming. His coach told him to hang the medals above his head in his bedroom so he sees them before he goes to sleep. His mom wants to know if this is a good idea. What should I tell her? Answer: That’s a great idea from his coach! You have to see something for it to happen – and seeing all those medals is a great way to motivate a young man to keep striving. My only thought is that I don’t like the medals hanging over his head while he sleeps. Is there a way to place them on the wall opposite his bed so he sees them without having them hang over his bed? I’ve often said that it’s a great idea to put goals and things you want in front of you – because you have to see the thing you want as often as possible in order to see the result. It’s a lot like saying “What you see is what you get.” I wish him much continued success and luck! CANADA... From page 1 accept up to 20,000 applications for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents, in 2019. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said the decision accept more applications was a result of the continually high demand in the Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Program and the reduced backlog of applications, which has dropped from a peak of 167 000 people, in 2011, to just under 26 000 people, in June 2018. “Over the last few years, we have made substantial improvements to the parents and grandparents sponsorship process and eliminated the backlog of applications. Now, by accepting even more applications this year and next as well as enhancing the intake system, the Government of Canada is demonstrating its commitment to helping families

PILIPINO EXPRESS live, work and thrive together, in Canada,” said Hussen. After increasing the 2018 cap to 17 000 complete applications, IRCC sent a second round of invitations to randomly selected potential sponsors who submitted an Interest to Sponsor form in early 2018. Those invited to the second round have until October 5, 2018, to submit a complete application. In 2019, as in previous years, the Interest to Sponsor form will be available online at the beginning of the year for people who want to submit an application to sponsor their parents and grandparents. Pedal to the metal There’s probably an entire generation of people out there that have no idea what “pedal to the metal” is referring to. Yet, there are many of you that have done it - yeah, you know who you are. It’s a saying that refers to driving a car and pressing the gas pedal all… the…way…down. It’s a reference to getting somewhere very fast. This past summer, the Burgos Bunch did just that, but for us, it was completing an epic road trip in a very short period of time. There was a lot, and I mean a lot, of driving involved. It started in my hometown of Nanaimo and ended back in your hometown of Winnipeg. In total, we drove over 7,000 kilometres! But wait Dale, you say, I just Googled it and the math doesn’t add up. Indulge me for a moment as I put on my travel agent hat. Our three-week trek across the Rockies and Prairies started with us taking BC Ferries across to North Vancouver. Those who haven’t done it, you must give it a try one day. The ferry is big enough for you to drive onto along with hundreds of other fellow travellers. If you’re hungry, there is a restaurant on board that serves an assortment of meals. If you’re lucky, you may be able to spot a pod of Orca whales commuting in the Strait of Georgia. Total sail time from Nanaimo to The Mainland is approximately one hour and 40 minutes. This does not include the hour or more of waiting at the ferry terminal. It’s

always best to reserve your spot on the ferry, especially during the summer because it can get very busy. The next stage was to drive from North Vancouver. I like to do this as quickly as possible. I stay on Highway 1 and pass Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Abbotsford and Chilliwack while trying to avoid the traffic that usually hits in the afternoon. Trust me, you haven’t seen traffic until you’ve seen Vancouver traffic. Unless you’ve been in Manila traffic, which I’m thinking most of you have – then, my condolences. Once we got past the commuters, we drove the Coquihalla Highway. I wouldn’t suggest doing this in winter, as closures are common due to bad weather or accidents. This is a great stretch of highway that takes you through the mountains; the scenery is breathtaking, Jjust don’t gawk too much if you’re driving. There was a time that it cost you money to use this shortcut. It is now free to all to use. At the end of the pass is Kamloops, our first stop on our road trip. Next stop was Calgary via the Rocky Mountains. Wow! Driving through this terrain reminds us just how insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things. These mountains were here long before we walked this earth and will be around after we leave. Make a detour through Lake Louise and Banff if you can. I recommend early visits to Lake Louise as the

parking can be challenging. Banff is a great town – lots of sights and shops. You might even spot a celeb or two while hitting the ski slopes. Calgary always surprises me. There are always new communities popping up and, like Winnipeg, the Filipino population keeps growing. Calgary is a special place as that is where most of my extended family lives. This was also the destination for many family trips when I was a wee lad. The next leg is one that I would rather forget – Saskatchewan. I’ve never liked driving through this province. It’s uneventful, flat and devoid of any greenery. It’s boring! Yet it’s a very easy drive. I usually hit cruise control and take a nap. We’ll get to Manitoba eventually.

Once in Winnipeg, we headed straight to my mom’s house, where she awaits with open arms and a warm home-cooked meal. There is nothing better! No travel tips needed here, you are more up to speed than I am. The next few days were more driving in and out of Winnipeg, visiting family and friends. We even got in a couple trips to my sister and brother-in-law’s cabin – that drive alone is 1,000 kilometres, round trip. This brings me to the main purpose for our visit; my cousin’s wedding. I was honoured to be in the wedding party and also act as the Master of Ceremonies. We laughed, we cried and danced the night away! There was the obligatory line dancing and

Manitoba wedding and social song favourites like YMCA and Mony Mony. The day after was the family reunion. It was a bit tough because our bodies ached from busting a move all night. The gathering was held at Assiniboine Park. We weren’t the only ones with the same idea. Thankfully we got a nice spot under a picnic shelter. The next day, we turned the truck around and pointed it back to Nanaimo. Let’s recap and do the math. Nanaimo to Winnipeg adding a couple round trips to the cabin – that comes to just over 7,000 kilometres. Excuse me while I stretch my legs.

INC members answer call for blood donations Canadian Blood Services (CBS) recently put out an urgent call for 22,000 blood donors by August 26 and hundreds of Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) volunteers responded. CBS donation centres from British Columbia to

Ontario have filled their available appointments; and the waitlist continues to grow. In Quebec, INC volunteers have pledged to help Héma-Québec. In Winnipeg, a group of Ministers and their families were

among the first INC volunteers to donate blood earlier last week. “The centre was overwhelmed with the number of ministers who arrived today,” said Sidney Santos, INC District Minister of congregations in Central Canada,

who saw the impact of their participation, just from the one event in Winnipeg. “Thanks to the Winnipeg Blood Centre, more appointments have already been set to accommodate the growing participation of INC

volunteers throughout the week.” Because most locations of Canadian Blood Services have seen a generous response to their call for donors, INC members will continue to donate blood throughout September.

The Game Sarasvati Productions marks this year with the 16th annual FemFest, a festival of lifechanging theatre for everyone. The theme of FemFest 2018 is Staging Resistance, and it runs from September 15 to 22. This year, two Filipino theatre artists, Elena Anciro and Joseph Abetria, join the festival in a production of The Game, written by Shyamala Dakshinamurti and Sowmya Dakshinamurti, and directed by Cherissa Richards. The play is a coproduction between Sarasvati Productions and Manohar Performing Arts of Canada. The Game depicts six different perspectives on a single violent incident that occurs to Draupadi, the iconic woman at the heart of the Sanskrit epic, the Mahabharata. Through a combination of beautiful Indian dance and poetic writing The Game is as relevant today as in centuries past with its story of a woman who resists attempts to silence her. Elena Anciro will be performing in The Game. She is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg’s Department of Theatre & Film. She was recently seen on stage in Breaking Through (Sarasvàti), Alice in Wonderland (Theatre NorthWest), JONNO (Echo Theatre), and Chimerica (Royal MTC / Canadian Stage). Elena is also a member of Red Threads of Peace, a playback theatre troupe that merges artistry, social justice, and community building through improvised storytelling. “When our director, Cherissa, shared her vision for the show with me, I was intrigued by the chance to explore and create with dancers, something I’ve never had the chance to do before,” said Anciro. “I was excited to work with classical Indian dancers to bring an ancient story into the modern world, especially one that addresses issues that continue to affect women today. It was also very intimidating at first, especially when confronted by the skill, strength, and grace of Manohar’s dancers! Working together to find that common language between actor and dancer has been a fascinating journey. I think the discoveries of where the lines blur will be exciting for audiences. It isn’t very often that you get to

see both a traditional and modern interpretation of this story on one stage.” Joseph Abetria is the design consultant for The Game. He is a Filipino theatre designer currently based in the North End of Winnipeg. A graduate of the University of Winnipeg’s Theatre Honours program, his recent design highlights include: Two Indians and The Seduction Theory (Sarasvàti Productions); Last Train to Nibroc (RMTC); Richard III (SIR); Iceland (TPM); Concord Floral, Vinegar Tom, and The Cassilis Engagement (UofW). He has also worked as an assistant designer for various productions such as Billy Elliot (RMTC), Romeo & Juliet, and the Rocky Horror Show (Stratford Festival). At times, Abetria also works as a scenic artist with companies like Theatre by the River, and KOBA entertainment. “For me, what’s exciting about working on The Game is learning about these ancient characters from the Mahabharata, and delving deeper into their psyche,” said Abetria. “With the help of our director Cherissa Richards and the cast, we identified our own modern counterparts of these characters in 2018. Who is a nobleman in our present world? Do I know Draupadi in my life? Answering these questions guided me in designing the actors’ costumes for the show.” “Audiences will find that there is an intriguing narrative in our retelling of this miracle in the Mahabharata. We are taking this piece of Indian epic mythos, and giving the characters new breath; a chance to explain themselves after centuries of just accepting their fate. There is energy in traditional Indian dance that electrifies the air; it amplifies the emotions of each scene. It’s a very passionate way of retelling this story,” said Abetria. Also at Femfest 2018, Sarasvati Productions will also hold a reading of a new work in progress, Home 2.0, which will be touring high schools in the fall. The work features Filipino performers Denisse Samaniego, Bennette Villones and Joanne Roberts. Source: Hope McIntyre, Artistic Director, Sarasvati Productions

In school, he studied architecture but the allure of music was always stronger and, before his graduation, it swept him away to see the world. Raffy traveled to Japan, Malaysia, Korea, Singapore and then later to Qingdao, China, where he founded a band with five other multi-talented musicians, calling themselves Swap Six. The band hopped from country to country for several years until Raffy parted ways with his five band mates in 2014 to settle in Vancouver where he took on his solo stage name, “Swap One.” Since then he has toured across Canada, the United States and Europe, performing on occasion with artists such as Wency Cornejo of Afterimage, Lolita Carbon of Asin, and kaniyang paninindigan.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Kailan ang huli mong physical check-up?

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept.

Good ang ika-1 at 9.

Libra (Sept.

Mag-isip, huwag kang padalus-dalos.

Gusto mo ba iyon?

Recently, nabalita, na ayon sa COA, 5.1 billion pesos na para sa food security was deposited to the Land Bank under the NFA savings account. May iba daw pinagkagastusan.

– CSF

Parliamentarians visit the Philippines Report by Kevin Lamoureux, MP Winnipeg North Earlier this year the Canada Philippine Parliamentary Friendship Group, which I chair, made the decision to visit the Philippines, and as I write this story, I am on my way back home from the Philippines. The primary purpose of the visit was to continue building bridges and to add value to what is already a healthy relationship between both counties. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has visited the Philippines twice and there have been several cabinet ministers who have also made the trip across the Pacific Ocean.

As a Parliamentary Friendship Group we were able to meet with a number of Senators, Members of Congress, staff members and appointees from President Duterte’s office. In all meetings, we talked about how the Filipino community in Canada continues to grow and at the same time make Canada a stronger and healthier country as a whole. I consistently made it clear that both Canada and Philippines need to go beyond immigration; we should also put an emphasis on talking more about trade and tourism. Canada has a lot to offer, such as expertise in food products and many services. Think of the potential in expanding

tourism opportunities, such as our snowbirds – Canadians who travel during the cold months of the year. We can do a lot more in the years ahead. Today, twoway trade between Canada and Philippines exceeds two billion dollars a year. In 2017, Canada exported 815 million dollars to the Philippines while we imported 1.392 billion dollars into Canada. We should continue to pursue ways in which both Canada and Philippines can grow and benefit more as a result of what I believe is a special relationship between two great nations. To be clear, this does not mean in anyway that we cut

back on immigration. Canada’s Filipino heritage community will be reaching one million people in the coming few years and the Philippines continues to lead as the number one source country for immigrants to Canada. Canada needs immigration in order to support and build our economy, and the Filipino community is second to no other in achieving our goals. The delegation was also provided the opportunity to meet with Canada’s Ambassador and his department heads. I should also mention that my daughter Cindy and I were able do a number of things on the side such as visit an ANCOP International

Seafood City coming to Winnipeg RioCan, the owners of Garden City Shopping Centre in Winnipeg, announced the signing of a lease with Seafood City Supermarket on August 23. The grocery chain is known in North America as the leading one-stop market, shopping, dining and retail hub catering to Asians, especially Filipinos, with locations in Mississauga, Ontario as well as Southern and Northern California, Seattle, Hawaii, Chicago, and Nevada. Seafood City Supermarket will occupy approximately 43,000 square feet in the space formerly occupied by Sears. The 92,000 square foot area will be divided into multiple units including a second large format tenant. The remaining

space will become home to smaller stores. A new entrance facing McPhillips street will also be created as part of the renovation. “We are a proud member of the Winnipeg community and we are excited to start phase two of our redevelopment. We look forward to welcoming Seafood City Supermarket and announcing the other exciting additions that will allow us to better support the daily needs of our customers.” said Rebecca Hyatt, Property Manager of RioCan’s Manitoba Portfolio. Seafood City Supermarket plans to open in Garden City in the summer of 2019.

site, which included a slum area along with housing projects that were made possible by Canadians here in Canada. Finally I would note that we had some fun outside of the official business. We were able to visit outdoor markets and even the Manila Ocean Park aquarium. All in all, it was a successful trip and I will continue to promote and encourage stronger ties between Canada and the Philippines. Allow me to give a special thank you to Ambassador Petronila Garcia from the Filipino Embassy in Ottawa and her staff. Without their direct help, the trip would not have been possible.
