Six Filipino-Canadian candidates are vying for a seat in the Manitoba Legislature in the provincial election on September 10. The following short introductions are listed in alphabetical order. John Cacayuran, Liberal, McPhillips John Cacayuran is a first generation born Filipino-Canadian

who lives in North Winnipeg. Completing his degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Winnipeg, Cacayuran became a provincial civil servant in the regulatory field and he was the lead investigator in the gaming industry. As a local union president, he was part of the team that lead the amalgamation of two regulatory agencies and developed a collective

agreement for its employees. He has volunteered as a youth soccer coach, worked on a senior’s council and is involved at his children’s daycare. Cacayuran is running in the newly created McPhillips riding that now includes West St. Paul. He is running against Greg McFarlane (NDP), Jason Smith (Green Party), See ELECTION p4

No homework? Homework has always been my weak point. In elementary and high school it was normal for me to do homework when I got to school in the morning, having been too busy the previous day with friends, hobbies, and other youthful stuff to bother with assignments. I always managed, and in fact it was something of a philosophy for me: unless the homework required massive work, I knew there was always time in the morning to do them. I wasn’t going to let something like homework take away the fun of being a child. There are currently two bills filed before the Philippine House of Representatives proposing a no-homework policy for schools. Deputy Speaker Evelina Escudero’s bill seeks to eliminate homework and limit school activities to the campus while Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas’ version wants to stop teachers from assigning homework during the weekends. I’m surprised that the proposals have been met with criticism and anger from the

She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing in the Philippines. She was one of the founding members and former vice-president of the Philippine Nurses Association of Manitoba, and the former vice-president of the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba. Legaspi is also an educator and mentor to internationally educated nurses (IENs) and is a speaker for the Canadian Coalition for Immigrants and the Adult Education Centre’s English Program for New Immigrants. Legaspi also operates a martial arts school for youth with her husband Red Igne. She has a 4th degree black belt in modern Sikaran and Arnis martial arts. She has also volunteered at Folklorama, Philippine Heritage Council, the Asian Heritage Council, the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival, and CancerCare Manitoba. Kelly Legaspi is running in the rural riding of Agassiz against Eileen Clarke (PC), Hector Swanson (Liberal), and Liz Clayton (Green Party). Malaya Marcelino, NDP Notre Dame Malaya Marcelino is a mother of two sons and a communications specialist for the president of a Manitoba-based agribusiness firm. She is currently working on her master’s in Political Studies at the University of Manitoba. Speaking English, French and Filipino,

people, but perhaps this is because most of the news has focused on the P50,000 penalty and two-year prison time for violators. That does appear to be much, but I think the undue focus on this part takes away the attention from the benefits of not giving homework to students. First of all, a student already spends a disproportionate amount of time in school. In the Philippines, classes start around 8 in the morning and end at around 4 in the afternoon. That’s eight hours of almost non-stop instruction and (hopefully) learning. This doesn’t count the time needed to get ready for school in the morning and the hours spent on the road. By the time a student gets home, he or she can be dead tired. But wait! They have to do homework, and this can take a few more hours. At the end of the day, a child has done nothing but school work even at home, leaving him or her with little or no time to spend on equally important things like family, friends, sports, hobbies, and the like. Second, and let’s face it,

Marcelino holds a bachelors degree in political science from the University of Toronto. Marcelino immigrated to Winnipeg from Manila with her family when she was four years old. Her family is well known as active leaders in the community and their church. Her mother, Flor Marcelino, served as the MLA for Logan from 2007 to 2019 and her father was an Honorary Consul General of the Philippines in Manitoba. Malaya Marcelino is running in the newly created riding of Notre Dame. It combines parts of the former ridings of Minto and Wellington, as well as Tyndall Park, which were represented by NDP MLAs Flor Marcelino (Wellington), Andrew Swan (Minto), and Ted Marcelino (Tyndall Park). Her opponents in this election are Donovan Martin (Liberal), Marsha Street (PC), Martha Jo Willard (Green), and Andrew Taylor (Communist). Ted Marcelino, NDP Tyndall Park Ted Marcelino is the encumbent candidate in Tyndall Park, first elected in 2011. He and Corie, his wife of more than 40 years, have three sons and 11grandchildren. Well known in the community for his volunteer work with new Canadians, Marcelino helped families with their Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program applications, volunteered his time as a Commissioner for Oaths and worked as counsel at the Immigration and Refugee Board. Marcelino studied law at the University of the Philippines and worked as a municipal and litigation attorney in Manila before immigrating to Canada with his

many students get help from their parents or older siblings when it comes to homework. Education Secretary Leonor Briones says she believes this is happening: “Alam naman natin na minsan ang homework, hindi naman ang bata ang gumagawa pagdating sa bahay.” [“We know that sometimes it’s not the children who do the homework when they get home.”] It’s just one way of teaching children how to get away with shortcuts and even downright cheating. These were what we experienced when our daughter was in school. For her, it meant waking up at six in the morning so she can catch the school bus at 7:00 a.m.. When she got home at around five in the afternoon, she would have to bury herself in homework before dinner, and often she would have to do more work after eating. By the time she got to bed we would have spent little quality time with her, and she often missed out on other activities that were also enriching (like shows, exhibits, hobbies, family time, and more), simply because there was no time. I think the proposal to ban homework acknowledges the fact that learning is not solely based on a school’s curriculum. A child – or adult, for that matter

– learns from all sorts of things and experiences, and doing away with homework frees children to soak in everything they can from various sources. This was one of the main reasons my wife and I finally decided to homeschool our daughter. We realized she could learn from us everything a regular school teaches – and so much more. Literally anything can be turned into a lesson, and she learns that education happens all the time, not just in school or when doing homework. More important, learning becomes fun. But since not every child is going to be homeschooled, I think the next best thing is to take homework away from them. This, however, has to be paired with encouraging parents to make sure the free time they have is used productively. It doesn’t have to take the form of lessons. Even having a relaxed dinner together can go a long way in teaching young minds about life. (Liberal), and Jasmine Brar (PC) in the Burrows riding. Jon Reyes, PC, Waverley Jon Reyes was elected to his first term as MLA for St. Norbert in 2016. He served as Manitoba’s Special Envoy for Military Affairs. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Reyes and his wife Cynthia have two children. Together they have owned and operated a successful small business in South Winnipeg for the past 13 years. Reyes served 10 years in the Canadian Forces including five years stationed on the HMCS Winnipeg as a member of the Royal Canadian Navy. He was awarded the Special Service Medal (NATO) by the Canadian Forces as part of his military service. Reyes is the founder and past president of the Manitoba Filipino Business Council. He has served as a director with the Kidney Foundation-Manitoba Branch and was recently appointed to the RCMP’s Commanding Officer’s Advisory Committee on Diversity. Reyes was also awarded the Premier’s Volunteer Service Award for his 12 years of community service with not-forprofit organizations in Winnipeg. Jon Reyes is running in the newly created riding of Waverly. The constituency encompasses the South Point and Bridgwater neighbourhoods. His opponents are Dashi Al-Zargani (NDP) and Fiona Haftani (Liberal). The provincial election will be held on Tuesday, September 10, but you can vote earlier at any advance voting place in Manitoba from Thursday, August 29 to Thursday, September 5, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and noon to 6:00 pm on Sunday.

Edda Pangilinan, Manitoba Forward, Burrows Edda Pangilinan immigrated to Canada in 1976 from West Germany, where she studied and worked as a registered nurse, anaesthesiologist and midwife. Skilled immigrants and the gender gap More women are becoming the principal applicants in the Express Entry process. The number of skilled female immigrant applicants has increased significantly since 2017. The latest Express Entry report, quoted in CIC News, reflects a narrowing of the margins between male and female principal applicants. The number of women with comparative rating system (CRS) scores over 400 has increased 56 per cent in the last two years. More and more female applicants are declaring themselves to be the principal applicants in the Canadian Express Entry process and outperforming male applicants. In order to measure male or female activity in skilled immigration, we can readily compare their selection outcomes with federal immigration. The first measure is participation rates, which show the number of female applicants increasing since 2016. (See the chart on this page.) Federal immigration (ICCRC) uses the comparative rating system to rank candidates who submit their online Expression of

Interest (EOI) profile. The EOI numbers also reveal the outcomes of men and women. Males still surpass females in terms of total EOIs submitted, but a growing percentage of women have CRS scores over 350 and female entrants with scores over 400 have increased 56 per cent since 2017. The 2019 CRS numbers show a significant difference in the outcomes of male and female principal applicants. Since January 2019, 75 per cent of the 39,273 female applicants had CRS scores in the range between 350 and 449, compared to 71 per cent of the 55,690 male applicants. It is important to note that the number of male EOI total profiles continues to exceed those of women but females achieved higher scores – 75 per cent versus 71 per cent. The numbers in 2018 displayed a similar pattern – 70 per cent of women in the Express Entry candidate pool scored over 400 CRS points compared with 67 per cent of male applicants. These results for female applicants have shown a marked increase over the past three years, with 62 per cent

in 2017, 70 per cent in 2018 and the current 75 per cent for 2019. At the high end, more women than men had CRS scores of 950 and above, a total of 65 women and 55 men. The measure for positive outcomes is when a profile is selected from the EOI database. The Invitations to Apply (ITA) also show the success of female submissions. Women received 37,322 invitations in 2018 or roughly 42 per cent of the 89,900 ITAs issued for the year. This number was roughly proportional to their participation rate of 41 per cent of all eligible profiles submitted. It is significant that female participation often differs by countries. From Jamaica, 67 per cent of applicants are female compared to 61 per cent from the Philippines. Women from China (55 per cent), Russia (53 per cent) and Korea (51 per cent) are also countries where higher numbers of principal applicants were female. The Express Entry numbers show that the gender gap is becoming less and less important for applicants. Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada shows that the percentage of

Source: Canada Immigration News women admitted to Canada has been rising by one per cent every year since 2015, and now stands at 47 per cent. Their selection, however, appears to be higher than male applicants. In 2018 there were 171,000 male EOI profile submissions compared to 109,000 female ones, but of these women made up 41 per cent of the eligible profiles. Submissions are not rated by gender but rather age, education, work experience, English or French language proficiency, presence of siblings in Canada, confirmed job offers, provincial nomination, etc. There are opportunities for both male

and female applicants. CRS points or ITAs are not based on gender. If you are interested, check out Express Entry as an option. It is open equally to male and female skilled immigrants. Easing into transition How to manage anxiety

As summer shifts into fall, the season of transition is before us. We feel the chill in the air, everyone is back from holidays, and the school year and kids’ activities start again. For some people, change can bring about worry and anxiety, especially if there is any sense of uncertainty. Different people experience anxiety in different ways. Some may use words such as “nervousness,” “fear,” “stress,” “panic,” “freaking out,” or “butterflies.” But overall, anxiety is characterized by having overwhelming worry or thoughts that cause distress and interfere with your ability to function at home, work, or in the community. Anxiety can affect our relationships with others too. Symptoms of anxiety can

include: • negative thinking • excessive worry • confusion • trembling • fatigue • feeling faint or dizzy • irritability • restlessness • difficulty breathing • rapid heartbeat • upset stomach or nausea • difficulty concentrating • muscle tension • insomnia Everyone experiences anxiety to some level, and there is no single cause for anxiety. Usually, a number of factors will contribute to how you experience anxiety such as genetics, your brain chemistry, and life situations. You are not able to control these factors. However,

what we do have power over is how we look at and interpret things that we experience. Core beliefs about ourselves, thinking style, and behaviours are factors that we can change. We can work to improve low self-esteem, try to change our negative thoughts, and adopt behaviours that will decrease our anxiety and stress. Try some of the following effective anxiety-reducing strategies. Think realistically Often times, we pay more attention to the negative, rather than the positive. Another thing that humans can do is to think of the worst-case scenario or down play our successes. So it is helpful to try to zoom out and look at the big picture. For instance, after a difficult workday, do not focus on all the things you didn’t do. Instead, make a mental list of all

the things you did accomplish, and how well you did it. Evaluate the benefits of worrying If it is a situation that we have little or no control over, there is not much we can do. Sometimes we worry so that we feel we are doing something to try to control the situation. But sometimes this brings about feelings of hopelessness. Examine your thought processes Do you only see the worst possible outcome? Do you make broad interpretations from a single or a few events? e.g. After feeling awkward at a job interview, thinking “I am always so awkward.” Try to stay away from thoughts using the words, always, never and every. e.g. “I never do a good job at work.” Be careful not to jump to conclusions or assume what others are thinking e.g. “My friend can’t go out for

coffee tonight. She must not like me anymore.” Don’t try to be perfect We often feel more anxiety when we want to be absolutely perfect at something. However, complete perfection is impossible for anyone to achieve. The end result is that you feel more worry and hopelessness because you will continually fall short of your goals. In fact, perfectionists tend to accomplish less because they spend a lot of time correcting and going over things again and again, trying to achieve an impossible standard. Meanwhile, a non-perfectionist could have accomplished twice as much work that is at an acceptable standard. Talk about it With any form of negative stress, it is always best to let out heavy feelings, rather than keeping See ANXIETY p9

Not your typical back-to-school You know those back to school shopping lists that require us to purchase ballpoint pens, highlighters, and sometimes even a fancy (but often overpriced) calculator? Some of you may even be on your way to a local store right now to finish (or start? hah) your school supply shopping! Nonetheless, back to school season is upon us and regardless if you’re a student or a parent of a student, I’m sure you are well acquainted with these back to school shopping lists. These lists help students physically prepare for school. However, I am a firm believer in also being emotionally, mentally, and spiritually prepared! So it is my pleasure to share with you three things you should include on your back-to-school list! Find your learning style There is something you need to know: everyone learns differently. Some people just need to hear the teacher say something once and they will remember it forever. Others will need to write it down repeatedly before it fully sinks in. There are three major learning types: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. • Visual learners can benefit from watching lectures, concept maps, colour coding material, and using flash cards • Auditory learners can assist learning by listening to soft background music, recorded lectures, repeating material aloud, and participating in study groups or discussion • Hands-on learners can aid themselves by taking frequent study breaks, chewing gum while studying, working while standing,

ANXIETY... From page 6 them to yourself. Talking to a family member, friend, counsellor, teacher, doctor or spiritual leader will help you to feel better. Find ways to relax The behaviours and activities that you choose can be a powerful outlet for stress and worry. Some people find that journaling is a great way to sort out their thoughts and let go of anxiety. Playing a musical instrument or singing can serve as a creative outlet for stress. Stretching is one of the easiest anxiety-reducing techniques because you can do this anywhere. If you find that you are feeling upset or tense, take a stretch break to find immediate relief. Yoga is an activity that combines stretching, breathing exercises and meditation, which can result in inner peace.

and doing demonstrations or fieldwork. Understand your stress This one is a big one, and truthfully, it is something we learn and relearn throughout our lifetime. It is important to be aware of what makes you feel stressed and, more importantly, how to handle your stress. School is often a contributor to stress – heavy work loads, big exams, anticipating test results, etc. So stress is inevitable in the school environment. Prepare by making yourself a list of ideas regarding how to manage your stress. What things, activities, people help alleviate the stress? Make that list and post it somewhere where you can refer it to it throughout the school year. Healthy habits for the win! I am a huge believer in the impact of sleep, diet, and lifestyle towards our daily effectiveness. Something like school requires you to exert a certain level of energy and you need fuel to push through the school year. If you haven’t yet, identify the key healthy habits you want to improve and create a plan on how you will incorporate it in your day-to-day life this school year. Maybe you need to sleep more? Eat better? Be more active? Whatever it is, identify it and make a plan to crush it! These are just a few tips I’d encourage you all to consider as you prepare for this upcoming school year. Everyone wants to have a great school year so let’s make it count and prepare for success! Wishing you all an amazing back to school season!

When in doubt, turn to the Internet or YouTube to find a variety of information and videos on relaxation, deep breathing, and mindfulness. Mindfulness focuses on the present moment, which can relieve anxiety because we are often worrying about what happened in the past and what will happen in the future. Being mindful means accepting what is happening in the present moment, and not being judgemental. It is important to manage anxiety before it happens, not just when we experience it. This decreases the chances of having emotional and physical problems down the road. People gather bundles of sticks to build bridges they never cross. – Author Unknown Cheryl Dizon-Reynante is a licensed therapist with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

Classroom feng shui that supports teachers and helps students learn more In our fast-paced living environment, it’s easy for kids to have a hard time winding down enough to be able to learn. For the mind to be able to focus, it’s important for the learning environment to support the ability to concentrate. Nowhere is that more important than in the classroom. At one time, it was thought that a child’s intellect needed stimulation and using bright colours and vibrant images in the classroom did this. However, for today’s easily distracted children, this visual stimulation could cause over-stimulation that can be an impediment to learning. For teachers, this means classrooms and students may be more demanding, difficult to maintain control over, and a drain on busy teachers trying to cope with it all. So, how can you support learning for students and keeping an orderly and positive learning environment that helps teachers actually teach rather than managing behaviour all the time? Classroom feng shui is one of the answers. We know that the right environment is essential for improving a child’s ability to focus and learn. When that environment is arranged to maximize that ability, the teacher’s job is made easier, the students enjoy learning more and are more successful at it and with their relationships in the classroom. These tips will help you to create a classroom that helps your students thrive and help you teach more effectively and with fewer discipline problems. Establish the teacher’s position. It’s essential for classroom order that the teacher has control of the classroom. One way to do that is to arrange the teacher’s desk in the command position. This is in the corner that is opposite and diagonal to the door. This is also called the lucky corner in feng shui. This placement naturally draws the eye inward, and expands the size of the classroom visually by anchoring the teacher at this end, and it gives the teacher a commanding presence in the

room and a feeling of support. The teacher should have a solid wall behind her and be able to see the door and have a view of the entire classroom. This helps the teacher have support of the classroom, focus their attention on her, and gain the support of parents, while establishing her teaching role. Avoid putting the teacher’s desk in line with the door. This can create stress and severe problems for the teacher. Set a calming tone. It’s essential to create a calming atmosphere where the emphasis is on. Visual order is essential for lessening distraction and increasing focus. While many feng shui experts talk about classroom clutter, the clutter goes much deeper than excess papers and pens; it’s really more about visual clutter. When busy, hectic designs or messy shelves distract the eye, concentration is difficult due to the visual noise in the room. If we use the maxim of ‘what you see is what you get,’ a visually disorderly classroom can often result in low concentration and inability to focus. Try to streamline the classroom so that visual stimulation is aspirational, such as travel, culture, health, or nature, for example. If possible, cover busy open shelves with curtains or doors, or move to the side of the classroom where the door is located. Use colours of nature. Toning down the bright and vibrant images with images of nature, space, travel, or natural elements helps to keep the classroom feeling calm and focused. Green, beige and brown colours are perfect for creating a calming classroom. Avoid the overuse of blue colours or ocean images as this can cause difficulties with emotions, apathy, colds, and respiratory illness. Children may find that they lack motivation in the presence of too much blue colour or excess watery images. To ground active children; use colours such as beige, terracotta, or yellow. Yellow is the colour of intelligence, making it a wonderful colour that’s both grounding and enlightening.

Use this colour in the northeast, centre, or southwest corners of the classroom. Look up. When we try to recover a memory or think, we roll our eyes upward to engage our mind. One way to engage a child’s thought process is the help them look upwards. This can be done by decorating the ceilings with stars, a bright sun in the centre of the classroom ceiling, or images of nature. Mobiles are another way to stimulate a child’s mind when they’re hung from the ceiling. Simple colours and shapes are best for this. Recognize! Make the south corner of your classroom the fame and recognition spot for your classroom. This is the perfect location to recognize a student or students for their achievement, or just to place their photos on a board as a member of the class. Make this the “recognition station” where students can receive treats, gold stars or as a place to spotlight members of the class. Enhance the education corner. This is the northeast corner of the classroom and it relates to the mind. However, the body part that is associated with the mind also needs to be stimulated – and that’s the hands. The hands are the external portions of our minds. Help students to focus by learning sign language, keyboard, macramé, or anything that helps them exercise their hands, because this helps to engage their mind. It’s also one of the reasons why musicians are often better students in the STEM classes – because they use their hands to play an instrument. This is a terrific area to teach students typing, learning calligraphy, painting, or anything that engages their hands. The northeast corner is also a good location for a reading corner. This is a terrific corner of the classroom for students to learn meditation, escape with a good book, or do something contemplative, such as colouring. Ground students. The earth is one of the best ways to help students learn and to keep them focused. Place images of maps, globes, pictures of the earth, and mountains to help ground students and keep their attention to their subjects. These images should be placed in the northeast and southwest corners of the classroom. The southwest corner is also the corner of the classroom that represents the female teacher. Stones, crystals and geology projects all work well in this corner. This is a good area for working

with problems, resolution skills, or working on relationship and inter-personal skills. Adding grounding symbols, such as a globe, help cement the teacher’s position in the class as well as focusing the students. Start learning at the door. Your doorway is a critical part of your home’s feng shui. The same is true of your classroom. Enhance the classroom by enhancing your doorway with a nature theme or a theme related to the corner where your door is located. For instance, if your doorway were located in the east corner of your classroom, any nature themed entrance would be perfect here. A learning rainforest could start with a stump and branches decorated with leaves and jungle creatures. Make your doorway make a statement for what your room is about such as space exploration, the earth and cultures, or education and learning. What shouldn’t you add to a classroom? A fountain. Rather than being calming and relaxing, the sound of the running water can become distracting and that can disrupt learning. A fountain can also create low motivation for learning and classroom apathy. An image of water or an aquarium would be much better than a fountain. Keep the flow going. Help keep energy moving in your classroom by keeping desks and tables pulled out to the centre of the room. Try to avoid having worktables pushed up against walls. By doing this, energy can move around the classroom and that helps promote energy for learning. FENG SHUI Q&A

Question: I lost my current work at the end of August 2019. Do you have any solutions for this?
Answer: I’m really sorry to hear that. This has not been an easy year for many men, and in September, some of the worst energy is headed your way. That’s why it’s important to take advantage of the months that offer you opportunities. Those months? August and October. This is when you’ll really need to work at circulating and networking. There are things you can do, though, in the meantime. Pay extra attention to your front door area. Give it a good cleaning and sprucing up. This is where your income starts, so make it attractive, organized and clean and this will help open up energy for new opportunities. I’d also add some nice crystals or vases in the NW corner of your living room for networking luck. You may also want to add a fan or pendulum clock here. Both will help you activate this corner – and will help hold down some of the difficulties in September. I’m especially fond of the clock, but a fan is good too. Good luck to you! World renowned fashion designer visits Winnipeg World-class fashion designer Edwin Uy will be in Winnipeg on Friday, September 13, 2019 for LIKHA, A benefit Fashion show gala and exhibit that will feature his outstanding creations. Edwin Uy is a Philippinebased designer of Filipino, Chinese and Spanish descent. He earned a degree in Mathematics from the University of the East before taking his place in the fashion industry. He began his career in arts by creating fashion accessories. His big break came in 2000 when he was commissioned by big names in the Philippine entertainment industry to design their couture. In the same year, he designed his first evening gown and national costume for an international pageant. When Peachy Manzano won Miss Tourism International in 2000, Edwin Uy began to be noticed. In 2002, he created the national costume for April Rose Perez when she competed in the Miss Earth pageant in Malaysia. His creation won 2nd place among 80 candidates. Despite the giant feat, Edwin did not pursue pageants again until 2011. In that year, Edwin Uy took a 180 degree turn and used history for inspiration and won Best Designer of the Year in the Mutya ng Pilipinas. In 2012, his Ifugao-Inspired dress worn by Nicole Schmitz

In 2013, Edwin’s design won 2nd place in the Miss Earth pageant, his second for the contest and in an international pageant. The next year, he landed his first international Best National Costume Award worn by Hilarie Parungao. In the same year, Mister International winner, Neil Perez, donned an Edwin Uy national costume that placed third. 2015 saw Edwin in his element, winning for the Philippines three Best National Costumes: 1. Mister International worn by Reniel Villareal; 2. Miss Scuba International worn by Cindy Madduma who also won the title; and 3. Miss Grand International worn by Parul Shah. In 2016, CJ Hirro competed in Miss Global and after winning the national costume award became 1st runner up to the title. One of Edwin’s popular pieces, the Pintados, placed in the Top Three National Costumes at the Reina Hispanoamericana 2017, which was worn by title holder Wynwin Marquez. In 2018, he bagged the Best National Costume in Miss Tourism Universe as well the Mister Tourism and Culture Universe. This year, Miss Supermodel

Therefore, wala akong inagawan ng boyfriend. Road Warriors I’ve written back-to-school articles for the Pilipino Express for over a decade now. Each time, I am always tempted to share my children’s lingering sadness as September approaches. Summer, as fun as it is, always goes by in the blink of an eye. It was like that when I was young and still does as an adult. The big difference this year? The littlest Burgos is now entering high school. Over here in my neck of the woods, Nanaimo, BC, Grade 8 is considered secondary. In my hometown of Winnipeg, I believe that’s still middle school. The kids aren’t getting younger and it will only be a matter of time when I won’t have anything relevant to write about when it’s back-to-school time (insert pouty face here). It will also be a few short years when the wee ones move out and live a life separate from Elizabeth and me (insert crying emoji here). To alleviate my sadness, we will continue to do as

much as we can while we got ‘em. How was your summer? Were the mosquitoes bad? How was the humidity? Surprisingly, I miss those things, as that was a big part of my Winnipeg summers. You must think I’m nuts. We didn’t make it back to Manitoba this year, but we did venture into Alberta for a couple weeks. First stop was Calgary. This city constantly amazes me. Each time we visit, it seems like a new community pops up close to my family’s homes. I also notice the increasing amount of Filipinos that now call Calgary home. We’re everywhere! If you’ve never been and are planning to visit, here are a couple must dos while in Calgary. At Canada Olympic Park, check out the Skyline Luge ride. This is where you sit on a little non-powered go-kart and ride down the side of a mountain on a winding track. Slap on a helmet and make sure

you smile for the camera. So fun! If hurtling down a mountainside isn’t your thing, check out Rec Room. This is basically an arcade on steroids – games of all kinds for kids of all ages. What else? The kids had a blast an Inja Nation. This is where you can try obstacles like you’d see on the TV show American Ninja Warrior. I am happy to report that I was able to beat the “Warped Wall” and “Salmon Ladder.” Sadly, my poor attempts at the obstacles made me realize I will never be a contestant on that show. We also made our way to Edmonton. Naturally, we visited the largest mall in Canada, West Edmonton Mall. I’m assuming it still holds that title. There we braved the many amusement park rides, including “The Mindbender” roller coaster in Galaxyland. Wow! While there, you might as well strip down to your swimsuit and check out World Waterpark. They had some new waterslides. Think 50 feet high (or more, not sure, I didn’t bring my tape measure), trap door and free falling. Yeah, it’s just as scary as it sounds. Overall, it was a great trip and we got to

spend quality time with my sister and nieces who drove out from Brandon. Closer to home, Elizabeth and I finally did it – we bought a camping trailer! After years of saying, “Yeah that would be fun,” we actually made the leap from wishing to doing. We’ve noticed people coming from far and wide to Vancouver Island just to camp. I see a lot of Alberta license plates and a smattering of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Washington and Oregon visitors. Apparently camping with ocean views is a thing. Who knew? My limited

CRISTY... Gawin niyang

camping experience during my younger years involved tents, freshly cooked rice, adobo and BBQ on a stick. For some reason, we only camped at Rushing River Park in Lake of the Woods. Why is that, mom? We fully intend to make good use of this new trailer of ours. Expect to see me parked in the Superstore parking lot on McPhillips next summer. Come by and say hello. Bring some food if you do. Dale manages the communications department for a school district in B.C. positibo ang nangyayari sa kanila ni Ellen.

Bulacan Association picnic in the park by Lucille Nolasco Three years ago, the Bulacan Association of Winnipeg, Inc. (BAOWI) experienced a renewal with a new set of officers and additional members. Originally founded in 1976 by Bernie Bernabe (deceased) of Norzagaray town, BAOWI’s goal was to unite all Bulakenyos in Winnipeg, and in helping kababayans in need, back home. Former BAOWI presidents include: Albert Capiral, Lito Bautista, Jun Magsino, Rey Valderama, Clarita Nazario and Venancio Domingo. Besides holding picnics and fiestas, members raise funds for Emaus Home for the Aged in Malolos and an orphanage in Bustos, Bulacan. “We also help young people with their high school education, as association scholars,” former president and current adviser, Clarita Nazario said. In 2003, Nazario and husband

Romy personally went home to the Philippines to facilitate the transfer and distribution of 18 boxes of relief goods raised by BAOWI for kababayans affected by super typhoon Ondoy. On August 18, BAOWI held its annual potluck picnic at Assiniboine Park, with lots of food, games and laughter. “It was very successful! We were happy to see new members. There is no fee to register for membership. They can always look for our group page on Facebook or contact any of the officers and members,” Nazario said. There are currently 300 registered members of BAOWI and the association hopes that this number will greatly increase in the future. At present, BAOWI is busy preparing for Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando’s visit to Winnipeg, to personally induct the new set of officers and 23 towns and city representatives. Fernando is hoping to bring with him 10

celebrities to participate in a fundraising basketball game. The new set of BAOWI officers includes: President Ray Argulla; Vice President Venancio Domingo; Secretary Rizza Reyes; Asst. Secretary Azelle Sanchez-Santos; Treasurer Charinel MalabananNavoa; Asst. Treasurer Gladys Martin; Auditor Jeff Figueroa; Asst. Auditor Madel Samaniego; PRO Carolina Nazario-Raymundo; and Adviser Clarita Nazario. Photos by John Michael Photography

CRISTY... From page 17 hiwalayan.

CRISTY... From page 18 Vice. He is not okay. I’m not at liberty to say what’s wrong with him.”

Ano kaya ‘yon? Sinabi ng SMC president at COO Ramon Ang, na sisimulan ang proyekto on or before the end of 2019 at maaaring magamit na on or about 4 years from now.

US president sana mismo must cut some kind of trade agreement. Buti na kung mayroon, if none that may deter his re-election

CRISTY... From page 19 pinanonood noon ang seryeng Cain At Abel. Naging guest namin siya sa Take It. Per Minute, Me Ganoon.

Kong ay malamang magsialis din doon at possible to migrate at Canada or Australia.

and programs doon. Taiwan noon was as model of Land Reform Programs ng US.

SAGOT SA NO. 330

SEPTEMBER 1 - 15, 2019

Marami kang totoong kaibigan.

Relax muna. OK ang ika-2, 3, 10 at 11. Ingat ka sa ika-1, 6, 7, 12 at 13.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Stressed out ka dahil masyadong marami kang iniisip.

Ikaw muna bago iba.

kaniyang leading lady.

– CSF
