By Judianne Jayme WINNIPEG – Seven finalists from this year’s Miss Debutante 2015 pageant spent the last day of the year doing something truly meaningful. The young women, along with the administrative team behind the pageant (Rey-Ar Reyes, Manny

Diolazo, Judianne Jayme, and Valen Vergara), woke up early on December 31st to make a trip down to the Children’s Hospital Foundation to deliver a cheque of $1,000 in support of children seeking medical help and their families. This contribution will be doubled by CN Rail’s donation match program,

making the overall amount donated $2,000. All contestants, upon applying for the pageant, were encouraged to become leaders in the community. One way in which the young women got involved – apart from making public appearances – was through See HEARTS p7

All-in-one ID cards coming in 2017 WINNIPEG – Manitobans will be carrying an all-in-one personal identification card (PIC) starting next year. Manitoba Health Minister Sharon Blady made the announcement on Monday, January 11. The PIC will integrate a person’s health identification number (PHIN) onto the back of driver’s licences and photo identification cards. Blady noted that the PICs are to be issued to Manitobans over the age of 16 starting as soon as the fall of 2017, and will be authenticated using procedures and practices currently in place at Manitoba Public Insurance. MPI already issues photo identification to approximately 92 per cent of health cardholders. The minister said anyone who requires a Manitoba Health Card would transition to a new PIC at no charge. The new ID card will include technology to protect cardholders against identity theft, forgery and fraud. It is also expected to improve access to photo identification for low-income and homeless Manitobans. Like the existing driver’s licence, the combined card will be made of plastic and will have the

Be careful out there One of the peculiarities of the 2016 election is that it is the first electoral exercise in which a cybercrime law is in effect in the country. Republic Act No. 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, addresses legal issues concerning online interactions and the Internet in the country and includes offenses like cybersquatting, cybersex, child pornography, identity theft, illegal access to data, and libel. For the most part, the law is an important one and puts the Philippines squarely in the 21st century as far as information and communication technology is concerned. There really needed to be a law that would address crimes that are rampant in the Internet, especially child pornography for which the Philippines was fast becoming notorious. In many ways, RA 10175 was a step in the right direction and has made other countries more confident about their online security here. The problem with the law, however, is that it also includes online libel and has even increased the penalty one degree higher, that is, from a maximum of four years and two months (prison correctional) to a maximum of eight years. The new law has been criticized for constituting prior restraint to the freedom of speech and freedom of expression, and this is now going to be put to the test as the May election approaches.

Indeed, we are already getting a warning from Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) spokesperson Superintendent Jay Guillermo, who recently warned that “paid trolls” spreading destructive memes against politicians, particularly those running in the national elections this year, may be charged with online libel. His warning was particularly directed to groups that are paid by politicians to defame their rivals on social networking sites that harsher penalties await them, but it may very well apply to everyone who’s online. This can actually be seen in the statement of Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor, who advised netizens in general to “be careful” when posting on Facebook, Twitter, and other sites. “If you’re uploading information on the Internet, you have to examine the proper words you will be using para hindi ka makasira. Neutral lang dapat dahil malaki ang audience when you are uploading information on the Internet,” Mayor was quoted as saying. If that is not prior restraint, then we don’t know what is. Such statements have a chilling effect on those who want to be free to express their opinions about any person, a right that is especially important as candidates try to convince the people to vote for them. Without the freedom to reveal the truth

about and to express opinion about candidates, the people will have no basis to make educated decisions on whom to vote for. We’re all for civility and selfrestraint, but these are values that come from inside a person; not imposed by any authority. With the Supreme Court declaring the online libel provision of RA 10175 constitutional, we fear the worst as candidates use this to prevent people from writing against them online. Be careful out there. Technicalities This year, poor families that need contraceptives will have to shell out the amount themselves as the Senate removed a P1billion allocation for free contraceptives that would have allowed them access to free condoms, IUDs, and birth control pills in health centres nationwide. The Senate’s action was reportedly brought about by two factors, depending on who one talks to. According to Senator Loren Legarda, who is known to support the Reproductive Health (RH) law, it had to do with how the Department of Health (DOH) obligated its 2015 budget. “As of June 2015, the DOH status of funds shows that of the P3.27billion allocation, only P955 million has been obligated or 29 per cent,” Legarda was quoted as saying. “For the remaining six months, P2.3 billion or 71 per cent has yet to be obligated.” A second reason was put forward by

Senator Vicente Sotto III, an RH law critic, who said the basis for the budget cut is the temporary restraining order (TRO) issued by the Supreme Court (SC) in June 2015, which temporarily stopped the distribution and sale of birth control implants and also temporarily prohibited the DOH from granting any pending application for RH commodities. The tragedy, of course, is that neither the senators nor the DOH executives are directly affected by the budget cut. The removal of the amount affects the millions of poor who can barely make ends meet as it is. Poor couples would most probably not sacrifice the few pesos to purchase pills when they can use the money to buy food instead. And without access to free contraceptives, they are exposed to the dangers of HIV, unwanted pregnancies, and a host of other problems — problems that are really easily addressed by simple contraceptives. Instead they become caught in a vicious cycle of poverty, which breeds unplanned pregnancies, which breed poverty — and so on and so forth. If technicalities are what caused the budget cut, then government ought to set things right in order to save the lives of the millions of poor who will be affected. No more hard copy receipt How many of you have paid immigration processing fees at the bank with a hard copy, purple coloured, Payment Receipt (IMM5401)? This is the purple coloured form that you take with you and complete three sections on the back side. If you have used the form in the past, then get ready, because it is being removed from active service within a few months. Starting February 1, 2016 you will no longer be able to order new Payment Receipts forms from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Canadian Financial institutions will continue to accept the IMM5401 until March 31, 2016. The form has a few months of shelf life remaining but the reality is that a number of banks stopped accepting these forms a number of months back. The gradual phasing out of hard copy forms is something we have become accustomed to. CIC

has had an alternative open to users for quite some time. Users have had the option of paying the fees online and providing evidence of the online payment as part of various applications, for permanent residence, work permits, study permits, visitor extensions etc. The online option will therefore become the only option open to users by the end of March of this year. The CIC instruction is quite clear on this point: “As of April 1st, 2016, you will be required to pay immigration and citizenship fees online through CIC’s ePayment tool. Visit Pay your fees for more information,” on the CIC web site with following descriptor: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/ informaiton/application/fc.asp. The challenges of the online submission are open to all users. It is necessary to become proficient in the new system because it will soon be the only option open to

users. Before you pay anything online it is important to ensure: that you have completed the appropriate application(s); have a valid email address for delivery of the official Citizenship and Immigration Canada receipt; a valid credit card; an Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer; and access to a printer. In the event of a refund, CIC will comply with the requirements of the Financial Administration Act and issue refunds. However, CIC will only issue refunds to the payer whose name appeared on the credit card used for the payment. If the above challenges you,

this may be yet another reason to seek assistance from help agencies, MPs’ offices, licensed immigration consultants, and lawyers. I for one am sorry to see the old colourful IMM5401 being phased out but there is no stopping change. The best advice is to embrace it and learn how to pay online. Low libido in men Dear Ate Anna, I think I am a good husband and I love my wife very much. Sometimes, my wife wants to feel close to me, but I just don’t feel the desire to do it. Ate Anna, a man is supposed to want sex all the time, isn’t he? But, I don’t think that much about it. What’s wrong with me? Would Viagra help jump-start my sex life? Rob Dear Rob, Thank you for your question. Many men who have a reduced or low sex drive wouldn’t even want to admit it. It is unfortunate that many people still hold the belief that “men are always ready and willing to have sex.” This is a myth. But the messages men and women get about sexual relationships from popular culture and the media perpetuate this myth. Rob, it is common for both men and women to experience low sex drive, or libido, at some point in their lives. In Bernie Zilbergeld’s book, The New Male Sexuality he found that 30 per cent of men felt, at least sometimes, that sex was a burden. Other studies show that low sex drive affects at least 20 to 25 per cent of adult males. Every person is unique. People should not feel that they must have sex a certain number of times a week or a month to have a good sex life. However, if a man thinks that his libido is low and this causes distress to him or in his relationship, he may want to think about getting medical help. Some signs of low sex drive in men include less frequent sexual thoughts, reluctance to initiate sex, or a lack of desire for sex – especially after going without sex for an extended period of time. Like women, the cause for low libido in men can be physical as well as psychological. The following are some common reasons for low sex drive: Low levels of testosterone When men approach their forties, the level of testosterone (male sex hormone) will naturally decline, usually dropping by one to two per cent every year. If the testosterone

level falls well below the normal range it can lead to a decreased sex drive. Some younger men with hormone deficiency will experience the same condition. Chronic stress can also lower the level of testosterone in the body. Illnesses and medication Medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, or depression often affect a person’s sex life. Also, some medications for depression,

prostate problems, and high blood pressure, as well as other drugs, can reduce a person’s sex drive. Lifestyle Unhealthy lifestyle habits such as excessive drinking, smoking, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, poor eating habits, and obesity are factors that can contribute to low libido. Stress Many men report that stress is the #1 killer of their sex drive. Work stress, financial stress, family responsibilities or other life stresses such as a move, a job loss, a new baby, or death of a loved one can have a negative effect on one’s interest in sex. Relationship issues Anger or any unresolved conflicts with a partner can cause sexual disinterest in men. Many people mistake low libido in men for erectile dysfunction but they are not the

PAGE 5 same thing. Viagra is for men with erectile dysfunction. These men have normal sexual desire but they are unable to maintain an erection during sex. For men with low sex drive, they can usually perform but they lack desire. Rob, it looks like Viagra may not be the right thing to jump-start your sex life. Ate Anna suggests you see a doctor for a complete physical examination to check if there is any underlying cause for your low interest in sex. For relationship issues, stress or other lifestyle issues, talking to a counsellor may help. In the meantime, you can try thinking about your situation in a different way. In other words, you might not really feel interested in sex but can still be willing to do something to pleasure your wife. This, in turn, might change your feelings. And remember, sex does not have to equal intercourse – be

creative and enjoy the physical sensations of touching in different ways. The good news is that many women want “quality” instead of “quantity” in their sexual relationship. If your wife wants to be close to you and you keep avoiding her, she may feel rejected. This is especially true if you don’t talk to her about your concerns. Talking to each other in a caring manner is the best way to build intimacy and support each other as you deal with this challenge. Take care, Ate Anna Ate Anna welcomes your questions and comments. What did pre-colonial Filipinos look like? One of the problems of school history textbooks is that they are usually commissioned by governments to serve more as nationalist propaganda rather than impartial accounts of history. Add to this the fact that they are written for young, non-historians rather than for scholars, and it is not surprising that many errors slip through. The dubious modern portraits of people who lived before the advent of photography are especially amusing. Take for example the common image of the early Filipino printer, Tomas Pinpin, wearing a Barong Tagalog and a pair of slacks – even though he lived 400 years ago in the age of pantaloons and bahags. And there is the poet Balagtas, who lived in the early 1800s who is almost always portrayed wearing a crown of laurel like an ancient Greek. Magellan is often shown battling the natives of Mactan who look a lot like North American natives from an old Hollywood movie. What did Filipinos really look like before the Spanish invasion? It is quite a large subject to fit into a few hundred words, considering that every community had its own customs and ideas about clothing and physical appearance. The first people of the Philippines that Westerners described in detail were the Visayans that met Ferdinand Magellan’s fleet in 1521. Tattoos The Spaniards called Visayans “the painted ones” or pintados because of their tattooed skin. For Visayan men, tattoos were a symbol of bravery, which were earned in battle. A man’s first tattoos were applied to his legs near the ankle and as more tattoos were earned, they were applied farther up his body. Only the most elite warriors had tattoos on their faces, the ultimate being applied to their eyelids. Visayan women only decorated their hands with fine-lined tattoo designs. Tattoos were not common among Tagalogs – the men displayed their military accomplishments with a red potong, which was like a turban. Clothing Normal clothing for men in most parts of the Philippines was the bahag, which is usually translated into English as a “G-string” but this is misleading. In many communities, a bahag was actually a piece of cloth almost a metre wide and four to five metres in length. Women wore tube skirts or wrap-around skirts. Partial nudity was always an option for men and women. Visayan men especially would

have wanted to display their hard-earned tattoos. This is not to say that Filipinos did not have more elaborate clothing. Headdresses, blouses, tunics, scarves or ankle-length robes were worn on formal occasions and both men and women wore skirts of various styles. Clothing was made from local and imported materials such as abaca, cotton and silk. Hair and hygiene Hairstyles differed from one community to the next and they changed often but throughout the Visayan Islands men and women generally had long hair – down to the waist for some men and down to the ankles for some women. The men usually tied their hair in a knot on top of or behind their heads or they wrapped it in a head cloth similar to a turban. The women piled their hair high in elaborate styles and used flowers and sesame seed oil to treat the hair and to give it an attractive scent. Hair was cut short only as a punishment or as a sign of profound mourning. Muslim men in Manila kept their hair short and when the Spaniards began to occupy the islands they encouraged all Filipinos to cut their hair short as a way of “taming” them. Women used makeup such as face powder, nail polish (usually red) eyebrow paint, and lotions made from local roots. Both men and women regularly plucked their eyebrows to make them thin and arched. At least one Spanish missionary criticized this habit as an act of vanity. Other Spanish writers also commented on the Filipino habit of bathing everyday, which they thought was unhealthy and rather lascivious. Not a surprising attitude given the that the low level of personal hygiene among Europeans in the 1500s was quite disgusting by today’s standards. Jewellery Filipinos wore practically every imaginable type of jewellery – rings, earrings, bracelets, anklets, necklaces, chains, brooches, armbands, leg bands and sequinned clothing. Both men and women wore earrings. The men usually had one or two holes pierced in each ear and women had as many as four. It was stylish to expand the lowest piercing with large earplugs or to hang heavy jewellery from the hole until it stretched to a size large enough to fit a fist through it so that earrings would reach down to the shoulders. Jewellery was made of precious stones, mother-ofpearl and tortoise shells but, by far, the preferred material was gold. The amount of gold that Filipinos wore would dazzle a

rap star today and it certainly got the attention of the early Spanish invaders who almost always mentioned it in their descriptions of the people. They were astounded to see men wearing little more than a bahag and thousands of pesos worth of gold chains and other jewellery. More astounding to them was the gold they found underneath the men’s bahags. The practice of palang or penis piercing was popular in the Visayas. Devices called sakras were attached to the ends of a pin called a tugbuk, which was inserted through the sides of the penis, near the tip. The device was worn to enhance pleasure during sexual intercourse. Decorative dentistry Filipinos definitely liked the “bling bling.” Even their teeth were decorated with so much gold that they had what today’s hip-hop culture would call “grills,” except that Filipino dental jewellery was not easily removed, it was more or less permanent. To have plain white, naturally shaped teeth in the 1500s was considered uncivilized, even animal-like. A 1617 Waray dictionary by Mateo Sanchez contained the phrase baga napkangnan huligan, which meant that when a person with white teeth smiled it looked like he was “chewing on coconut meat.” The civilized thing to do at that time was to colour the teeth jet-black or deep red. Chewing on anipay root or applying a protective tar-like substance called tapul coloured the teeth black while red ant eggs, kaso flowers and the regular chewing of betel nuts coloured the teeth red. Filipinos also filed their teeth to make the edges flat and even – even if it meant filing away half a tooth to do it. The space between each tooth was also filed to make equal gaps. Another option was to file all the teeth to points, like the teeth of a saw. Either way, the idea was to have even, symmetrical teeth. No decent set of teeth was complete without some gold work. The basic style of decoration was to drill holes into the teeth and then insert gold pegs, which were filed flat to give the appearance of gold dots. If the pegs had flat heads they could be overlapped to look like gold fish scales. If the peg heads were rounded, elaborate bead patterns could be made. Gold caps and plates that covered the whole tooth and even above the gum line were also riveted into place with gold pegs. Imagine that the next time you see a portrait of the stoic,

A Tagalog couple of the 1590s, the pair is wearing plenty of gold jewellery and the woman’s earlobe is pierced and stretched out. The man is wearing Spanish style pantaloons instead of a bahag. The image is believed to be painted by a Chinese artist commissioned by the governor of the Philippines, Luis Pérez das Mariñas.

HEARTS... From page 1 volunteering at Siloam Mission, helping to serve and clean up dinner for patrons. For some of the finalists, this was their first experience volunteering in the community – and they all have expressed interest in continuing to give to those less fortunate than themselves. Miss Debutante 2015 continues to support all participants as they explore new opportunities being presented for them. As our mission states, we open the doors of opportunity for young women who embody traditional Filipino values while adapting to the demands of today’s society. Miss Universe 2015, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, coined the phrase to be “confidently beautiful with a heart,” and these young women embody that sentiment as they prove they are, truly, more than just pretty faces with brains to match – they also have a spirit of giving and the humility of serving others. A big thank you to our contacts at the Children’s Hospital Foundation, Rebecca Brask and Melanie Ozubko, for supporting and encouraging us on this journey, sharing laughter and tears of joy as we all shared stories of hope. The mystical feng shui powers of the number 8 It’s widely known that the number 8 is regarded as the money number in Asia. And that idea is catching on here in the west, too. From phone numbers and addresses – even license plates – everyone’s looking to get as many eights as possible in their daily living. Even jewellery designs have popped up everywhere with eights in the design, although many call it the infinity symbol. But the eight has more meanings that merely money and wealth, though that is the No. 1 reason why the eight is so popular! Directions In feng shui, there are eight directions: north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. Eight represents each of the cardinal directions and their sub-directions. Eight also represents the number of sides of a bagua, the octagon that is often used as the feng shui map of a home. The number eight can also refer to people. The Eight Immortals There is a group of deities in the Taoist religion called the Eight Immortals. Each of the immortals represents an important aspect of living (much like the bagua does) and each god is said to possess a particular power. The Eight Immortals are comprised of six men and two women and are believed to have lived at one time but that they drank the nectar of immortality and are now gods. In many Asian homes, the Immortals are displayed as figurines and believed to bestow good fortune, health and

happiness to the residents. Each of the immortals also represents a particular direction and should be placed in their respective directions. The mystic knot is often carved in jade to be worn as jewellery In Buddhism, it is believed there are eight auspicious gifts: the banner of victory, the double fish, the vase, the lotus, the conch shell, the parasol, the mystic knot and the wheel. Displaying these items brings good fortune. Each of these auspicious items has a meaning and is associated with the numbers one through eight, beginning with the banner of victory. Thus, the eighth auspicious item is the mystic knot. The mystic knot is a symbol of never ending good fortune and happiness. Mystic knots often show a combination of three, six or eight figure eights. The knot is a powerful activator for homes that face northeast or for those who have an eight kua number, a birthdate, or a name that adds up to the number eight. Water Star and Mountain Star 8 House charts in feng shui all feature the number eight prominently because we are in the period of 8. The mountain star 8 gives health and relationship happiness, and the water star 8 gives financial abundance and wealth luck. Activating these two together gives you both! Make sure you look for both in your feng shui charts. The Current Period 8 Feng shui is calculated in

periods lasting 20 years. The current period that we are in, and that started in 2004, is the period 8. That means that the number eight symbolizes current prosperity! The number will retain its strength and remain auspicious until 2024, when it changes over on February 4, 2024 to period 9. In 2016, the number eight will be especially auspicious when it visits the southwest sector of women, bringing them extra income, opportunities and great, good fortune! It’s equally auspicious for everyone, but especially beneficial for women and anyone with an 8 kua number or a southwest facing house. The number eight currently possesses strength to bring good fortune to those who use it, such as by carrying a mystic knot hanger or by wearing a piece of jewellery with the 8 figure. There are even bed mattresses with a figure eight design or doormats! Activating the Eight There’s so many ways you can activate the power of eight – from designs in clothing to jewellery. Wearing an eight design whether as an eight or as a mystic knot is an excellent way to activate your power of prosperity. Worn as a necklace, the eight will imbue your voice with energy to make your words persuasive – so excellent for anyone who writes for a living or who is in sales. The wrist and hands are associated with your thoughts, and if you wear a ring or bracelet with the symbol of an

eight, you imbue your mind with thoughts that help you make money or good financial choices. Kathryn Weber is the publisher of the Red Lotus Letter Feng Shui E-zine and certified feng shui consultant in authentic Chinese feng shui.

For myself, for them Alroy Eugenio Nonato was awarded an honourable mention for the ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence last June based on his high school GPA, a group interview, and an opinion piece in response to the question, “How does expression impact you?” The following essay was his submission. To express one’s self is to act on emotions and display your thoughts to the world, disregarding the stereotypes society has placed on you. As a high schooler, society expects my generation to be entitled and selfish. We are not expected to help others because of our greed and egos. My actions do not fit this mould. I dedicate my time

to a school group where I raise money to fund a school/daycare in the Philippines. I organize fundraisers and plan out events for the group. We assist children half across the world in receiving education and the possibilities of a better and brighter future. I do not do this to prove anyone wrong or to change society’s appearance on myself. I do this because I get a sense of satisfaction from helping others. Some people believe I do this to get face value and to impress people. They slander my work and tell me that I do not truly care. This does not bother me. I know why I volunteer my time and no one can change that. I feel happy because I am able to make someone else happy through my

actions. It puts a smile on my face. Similar to Nereo II, I am able to express myself through my actions. He does it through his spoken art, and I do it through my volunteer work. He found that spoken word, and being a battle lyricist revolve around a similar basis, of being an expression of one’s self through his words. However they are different because you experience separate feelings doing each. As a battle lyricist you need to feel anger and try to mentally destroy your opponent. As a slam poet you express yourself without concern of others. You disregard other people’s opinions and express your inner thoughts freely. This scenario is similar to my experience. As a volunteer worker, there are individuals who do not personally know me and believe

that I volunteer for my own gain. They believe I do it for face value and that I want to bring others down by making myself seem kind. I was seen in a similar light as Nereo II, a person in it only for themselves. In reality Nereo II found more satisfaction with slam poetry. He was allowed to open up and express his inner emotions. I am able to continue volunteering because I know my true intentions, and it is through volunteering that I am able to express my emotions. I disregard the negativity of others, and stay true to myself. We are able to show ourselves and our thoughts to the world and we disregard the negative feedback, while embracing the support we receive. Nereo II stated that people “should not try to force a square into a circle” and instead to “be a chameleon”. He believes that humans should be able to adapt to

the world, and make it ours. Do not let others control you. I share this sentiment. I should be able to adapt to my surroundings, but still keep my core intentions and motivations close to my heart, because if I do not I will not be truly expressing myself and what I stand for. All-in-one photo ID

For minors, seniors and other non-drivers, the PIC will combine a photo ID with a health and travel card

ID CARD... From page 1 cardholder’s photo and driver’s licence information printed on the front, but it will also have that individual’s Personal Health Identification Number (PHIN) on the back. As well, the health information will be accessible from the cardholder’s smartphone or tablet using an app that will serve as a virtual card, which is a first of its kind in Canada. Manitoba Public Insurance launched a five-week public and consultation process last August involving more than 4,000 Manitobans and 29 organizations providing input. The full consultation report is available for viewing on the MPI website at www.mpi.mb.ca. “Response from the public was overwhelmingly positive,” Minister Blady said. “Not only do Manitobans embrace the convenience of carrying just one durable and tamper-proof card to access health care and other services, they also strongly believe the PIC will better protect against identify theft, forgery and fraud.” “Of the many suggestions received during the consultation process, we are pleased to announce that we will be

significantly expanding the life-saving capacity of organ donation services in Manitoba,” said Minister Blady. “By integrating the organ donor registry into the PIC issuance process, Manitobans will easily be able to state their preferences for organ donation if they choose to do so.” Manitoba Public Insurance will be accountable for establishing and verifying identity while Manitoba Health, Healthy Living and Seniors will retain full responsibility for determining eligibility for health services, assignment of personal health information numbers and approving family relationships under health registration numbers for health-care billing and pharmacare deductible application purposes. Minister Blady also stressed that no personal health or drug records will be shared with Manitoba Public Insurance and no driver’s licence information or driver history will be shared with Manitoba Health. The implementation of the new Personal Identification Cards will be free of charge to all Manitobans. The transition will cost the government $13 million, which MPI says will not be passed on to ratepayers.

The three-part marathon: breaking down the educational year I began this year by advising you to hit the ground running. We have now officially ended our first leg of the educational marathon, settling nicely into the relatively “calm” part of the year. These are the weeks when teachers can teach generally uninterrupted. By now, programs are set, routines are in place, and the students are settling back into the swing of things. The biggest challenge of this middle part of the educational marathon is setting the pace. We are now recharged from the winter break, and we have a good three

months before the spring break. It’s easy to overwork students (and staff!) and having them burn out before the end of the year. Establishing a steady pace for these three months is critical to ensuring that we finish the marathon strong all the way until June. It’s almost too easy to want to run when we truly should be enjoying the gift that is the ability to recharge our batteries and stretch before the final leg and the finish line. These are the months where I begin to teach my students about

responsibility and accountability – a short break is not an excuse to magically “forget” the rules and expectations set prior to the break. It’s also an opportunity to do a quick review of what we’ve done, set our goals for this midyear term, and continue growing as learners. Parent tip: Pace yourselves Just as your child is getting back into the routines of school, take the time to also remind them of the expectations at home. Perhaps the winter break allowed for later bed times and/or more

screen time. Perhaps there was even a shift in dietary habits with all the holiday parties and celebrations. Ease them back into routines – have them begin reading on a nightly basis again and have that quality discussion with them about what they have read and what connections they are making to that text. Remind them of the chores that are expected to be done. Reaffirm that there is a limit to the amount of screen time. All these measures will aid in your child’s overall

educational experience – when home adjustments actually mirror classroom adjustments. This consistency will help to make the transition back into school less of a struggle or shock for your child after a two-week hiatus. Stretch those muscles, take a deep breath, and lace up your shoes. It’s time to set the pace for this mid-marathon section of our educational journey! Water heater lifespan A typical water heater has a lifespan of about 10 to 12 years. Careful consideration of the factors that affect its lifespan can provide a homeowner with information on the likely cost of replacing the water heater. These factors include: the installation procedure, usage volume, quality of construction, and maintenance. A water heater must be installed upright. If it is installed on its side, it will be subjected to structural stress due to inadequate support for the heater and its pipes that could cause premature failure. Water heaters must be installed in well-ventilated areas, not just for fire safety and nitrous oxide build up concerns, but also because inadequate ventilation can shorten the water heater’s lifespan. A

water heater must not be installed in flood-prone areas because water can rust the exterior and pipes, which decreases the efficiency and life expectancy of the unit. A water heater is best installed in an easily accessible location for maintenance. It must also be easily noticeable for health-hazard and fire requirements. The volume of water used largely governs the lifespan of the water heater. The water heater will have to work harder to heat the water if the volume is large. Moreover, greater water volume also magnifies the corrosive effect of water. Just like most household components and systems, you get what you pay for in a water heater. Cheaper units usually have shorter lifespan, whereas expensive ones

last longer. A good sign of a quality fabrication is its warranty. Longer warranties generally indicate superior manufacturing quality, with nine and 12-year models normally having thicker insulation and bigger or higherwattage heating elements. Water heaters with bigger heating elements and anodes have much better resistance to scum or mineral build up. Also give attention to the water heater’s features. For example, a porcelain casing provides a greater level of heat insulation and an additional layer of protection against rusting. Some models come with a self-cleaning feature that flushes mineral deposits in the pipes, which prolongs the unit’s life expectancy. Another factor that affects a water heater’s lifespan is the hardness of the water. The higher the mineral content, the shorter the water

heater’s lifespan will be because mineral build up decreases the unit’s efficiency. One way to offset the effect of this mineral build up is to regularly flush the water heater system. Higher-end models normally come equipped with a self-flushing feature. Though an old water heater may seem to be well maintained, a question arises, is the maintenance worth it? Warranties normally don’t include labour costs. So a good rule of thumb to follow is that if the total annual maintenance cost is greater than 10 per cent of the cost of buying a new water heater, it is probably not worth replacing damaged parts like a sacrificial anode. Obvious signs such as a leaky pond under the heater or cold water coming out of the faucets suggest replacement of the unit. Homeowners should carefully consider the age and warranty of the model, and

wisely weigh the cost benefit of maintaining an existing heater versus buying a new one. Sabi nga ng kaniyang kaisaisang anak na si Federico, “Nawala man si papa, masaya na rin kaming mga iniwan niya dahil kitang-kita namin how much he was loved by the industry he loved more.” He literally died in my lap,” kuwento ni John Nite habang hinahagod nang

I have my wife and kids, they can comfort me, pero iba pa rin ang kumpleto kayo,” komento ng anak ni German Moreno.

Pareho naman silang libre ngayon, may kalayaan silang magmahal at See CRISTY p14

CRISTY... May hihirit pa ba?

See CRISTY p17

Got to Believe a hit in Vietnam Philippine showbiz’s Teen King and Queen Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo recently brought honour to the country after winning accolades in Vietnam’s Face of the Year Awards for their performances in the hit series Got to Believe, which has captured a massive following in the Southeast Asian nation where the Philippine teleserye aired on TV. The series proved to be a big hit in Vietnam after Today TV started airing it on primetime television, every day, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Vietnamese viewers were indeed captivated by the love story of Joaquin and Chichay, as proven by the high ratings the show registers every night. The phenomenal Kathniel tandem personally received the Best Foreign Actor and Best Foreign Actress awards during the gala night held in Ho Chi Minh city’s Opera House on January 8. Organized by IMC, the parent company of one of Vietnam’s largest TV networks Today TV, the Face of the Year Awards aims to honour films and artists who had significant contributions to

the industry over the past year and are voted by the Vietnamese audience. For their respective categories, Kathryn and Daniel won over actors and actresses from other countries such as India and Thailand. “Thank you for this opportunity. And to all our supporters here in Vietnam, thank you so much for loving our characters, Joaquin and Chichay, and for loving the show Got To Believe. We love you!” said Kathryn. “I’d like to thank Today TV. We just feel very humbled, very blessed, and we are very thankful. Maraming salamat,” said Daniel. Prior to the gala night, Kathryn and Daniel already felt the love from Vietnamnese Kathniel fans when they arrived at the Saigon Airport Friday afternoon. Armed with banners, shirts, posters, and caps, Vietnamese fans chanted “Kathniel,” and some even sang the Got to Believe theme song. Fans also flocked to a local mall in Ho Chi Minh on January 9 for Kathryn and Daniel’s meet-and-greet, where the two stars gamely posed for photos, signed autographs, and answered questions.

Building a strong and healthy Inkster community by Janellyn Marcial A few years ago, a new building quietly popped up near the Philippine Cultural Centre of Manitoba, close to the corner of Burrows and Keewatin. While there was a lot of excitement around its opening, a lot of people drive by each day and still have no idea what goes on behind its doors. It wasn’t until I started to do more research on it last year when I realized what a vital resource the Inkster community had in its midst. I worked for a children’s charity for over five years, and the greatest moments of my job were to see how our programs affected the overall health of the children and youth we served. Under one roof, the kids had access to everything they needed: healthy food, a variety of activities, and support from people they could trust. And that’s what I think about when I have to describe what the NorWest Co-op Community Health is – a one-stop-shop for all your health care needs. What is NorWest Co-op Community Health? NorWest Co-op Community Health (NorWest) is a charitable, community based health care and support organization that has served the Inkster community since 1972. Using a team approach to health care, NorWest delivers a wide variety of services including family medical care, community programming, as well as counselling and support services. Their focus is to keep people well; not just treat them when they’re sick. They have a staff of approximately 120 ranging from doctors and nurse practitioners, to dieticians and cooking class instructors who all work together for the health of the community. NorWest identified a long time ago that additional services were needed to address the issues of the community. By offering a clinic and a variety of programs and services together, patients are able to take better control of their needs. Is there a cost to use NorWest programs or services? There is no cost to take part in programs and services offered by NorWest. How do I sign up? Am I allowed to come? Programs at NorWest are open to those living in the Inkster and Seven Oaks area. It is best to call (204) 938-5900 ahead of time as some services, such as seeing a doctor or nurse practitioner, require you to book an appointment first. How is NorWest different from seeing my regular doctor? Let’s use Maria as an example. She is an immigrant who struggles with high blood pressure and diabetes. Her health is also affected by her low income and an abusive relationship she cannot escape. Maria’s doctor can address her high blood pressure and diabetes, but may not have the expertise, resources, or time to help with the other issues contributing to her

poor health. NorWest understands that being healthy means more than just seeing a family doctor. It also means knowing how to cook healthy meals and finding support for her relationship issues. In addition to seeing a doctor or nurse practitioner on-site, Maria can easily and confidentially access other service providers and health care professionals who can assist with her complex needs. Are this a government entity? How is NorWest funded? No, NorWest is not a government entity, it is a non-profit charity. Funding is diverse depending on what program and service you look at. The primary care services such as seeing a doctor are funded through the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA). Programs such as the Community Food Centre, for example, are not funded by the WRHA and rely on the support of grants and donations. Are there any volunteer opportunities? Yes, NorWest has a volunteer program if you would like to get involved. Visit http://www. norwestcoop.ca/about-us/ volunteer-program/ for more information. Where can I get more information about NorWest programs and services? When are you open? NorWest Co-op Community Health is located at 785 Keewatin Street and open late to serve your needs. They are open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Call (204) 9385900 to learn more, or visit www. norwestcoop.ca for a description of the programs and services offered by the centre. In the coming issues of the Pilipino Express, NorWest staff will write about several topics related to your health. If there is something you would like them to write about, e-mail jmarcial2@ norwestcoop.ca. Janellyn Marcial is the development coordinator for NorWest Co-op Community Health Centre. She can be reached at jmarcial2@norwestcoop.ca

What services does NorWest provide? NorWest provides a number of programs and supports for the Inkster community including: • Family medical care • Prenatal and Well Baby Care • Vaccinations • Counselling and Support • Parenting Programs • Diabetes education and support • Health and wellness programs •Community Food Centre including Advocacy

and Referrals • Supports for newcomers to Canada • Supports for Pregnant Women • Cooking classes • Volunteering opportunities • Supports for kids and teen including Teen Clinics • Early Learning and Child Care

Nagising ang Bulakan Association of Winnipeg. Kung paiiralin, ano ang gagawin to those convicted before? After ten years, sa huling two years ng Harper administration, nagpairal ng Express Entry subalit maraming estasyon na dinadaanan.

Freedom of Navigation ang pangunahing issue. May walong military

HINAGAP Eleksiyon

Grace Poe at Mayor Rodolfo Duterte.
