Reckoning with Memory, Part 1 The months of April to June of 2021 saw three significant anniversary dates in the history of the Philippines that, in a way, encapsulate the history of the archipelago. The first, in chronological order of the original event, was the Quincentennial commemorations in the Philippines to mark the 500th anniversary of both the introduction of Christianity to the Philippines and the conflict between Ferdinand Magellan and Lapu-Lapu, datu of the island of Mactan. The second was the 160th birthday of Jose Rizal, who was born on 19 June 1861. The third was the 123rd anniversary of Philippine Independence, declared on 12 June 1898. The recognition and celebration of anniversaries give us a chance to reflect on events and people in our lives that, for one reason or another, merit such recognition. The three anniversaries that were celebrated this year provide a unique opportunity to reflect on these events and why they’ve been given meaning in the first place. Over the course of my next three columns, I will look into each of the three events and explore the landscapes of memory that each take us into. I will begin with quincentennial commemoration of Magellan, an event which, in some ways, began the period of Spanish colonization in the Philippines. On 16 March 1521, Ferdinand Magellan landed on the island of Homonhon, east of the island of Leyte in the Visayas region of the modern Philippines. Starving and dehydrated from their voyage across the Pacific Ocean, which Magellan had called the mare pacificum, or the tranquil ocean, Magellan’s crew was relieved to find natural springs and food, although the island was uninhabited. He was spotted by men of the Rajah Culambu of Limasawa Island, Southwest of Homonhon and just off the southern tip of Leyte. There, Magellan held the first Catholic mass in the islands that would become the Philippines on 31 March 1521. On April 7th, the Rajah guided Magellan to Cebu Island, west of Limasawa. Humabon and his wife were baptized into the Catholic faith, taking the Christian names Carlos and Juana. In honour of their conversion, Magellan gifted the couple the Santo Niño, a holy image of the Child Jesus, which remains on display in Cebu. On April 14, Magellan erected a large wooden cross on the shores of Cebu. As a result of this close

relationship with a Rajah who was very powerful in the region, surrounding chiefs were instructed to supply Magellan with supplies and to convert to Christianity. All surrounding chiefs followed this order except for Datu Lapu-Lapu, who was in competition with Humabon for control of trade in the region and refused to submit to his commands. A fortnight later, on April 27th, Magellan would engage the men of Datu Lapu-Lapu on the island of Mactan, during which time he would perish. As recorded by the expedition’s historian, Antonio Pigafetta: “The captain [Magellan] did not wish to fight them, but sent a message to the natives to the effect that if they would obey the king of Spain, recognize the Christian king as their sovereign, and pay us our tribute, he would be their friend; but that if they wished otherwise, they should wait to see how our lances wounded. They replied that if we had lances, they had lances of bamboo and stakes hardened with fire.” When the decision to attack Lapu-Lapu’s settlement was made, Magellan was prevented from bringing his vessels close enough to the shore to use his cannon, and he and his forces were forced to wade through the shallow waters to the beachfront. He had a large contingent of Humabon’s men on their way, but instead of waiting for them, Magellan left with 49 Spanish soldiers to face 1500 men of Lapu-Lapu, according to Pigafetta. The fighting was at a deadlock. The guns and crossbows of the Spanish were not inflicting damage at the distance, and the spears and darts of Lapulapu’s men were useless against Spanish armour. The tide turned after a poisoned dart reportedly hit Magellan and he was swarmed by warriors swinging their large indigenous sword known as a kampilan. One of my very first articles for the Pilipino Express in October 2013 dealt with the memorialization of this event. In that piece, I noted that there were two competing historical plaques on the island of Mactan, one celebrating Magellan and the other celebrating Lapu-Lapu as the “First Filipino to have repelled the European aggression.” I also wrote how noted Filipino writer Nick Joaquin wondered how Lapu-Lapu would have reacted to being called “Filipino,” a term not used to refer to those indigenous to the Philippine Islands until the latter half of the 19th century. My conclusions in 2013 remain firm

today, that the celebration of the Quincentennial as a national event in the history of the Philippines is the product of social memory. In reality, it was a highly localized conflict between Humabon and Lapu-Lapu, into which Magellan injected himself. In historical retrospect, it certainly did hint at coming changes, but even the presence of Spanish colonialism in the islands would take several decades to transpire. Indeed, were it not for the historical writings of Europeans connected to the voyage of Magellan, the event may have disappeared from local memory entirely. And yet, for all of this, the event has taken on significant meaning, especially in the postcolonial climate of the Philippines. Commemoration is on the minds of many Canadians these days, as we deal with the legacies of the Residential School System and the remains of the victims that continue to be recovered. Recent actions in Winnipeg have seen the tearing down of the statue of Queen Victoria on the lawn of the Provincial Legislature. While to many, Queen Victoria was a symbol of the virility and strength of the former British Empire, of which Canada was a part, to many (inside and outside of Canada) she is a symbol of imperialism and oppression. Indeed, after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, she took direct control of the colony of India from the British East India Company, and was crowned the Empress of India. The removal of a statue will not remove the individual from history, and removing a statue is not really an attempt to erase history. It is an attempt to change the narrative being told. On this note, I’ve often noted how closely statues of Miguel de Legazpi and Lapu-Lapu are situated. In Manila, at Burgos and Bonifacio Drive, there is a Spanish-era monument memorializing Legazpi and his navigator, Andrés de Urdaneta, which in many ways stands as a symbol of Spanish colonialism. Legazpi was the first governor of the colony and while he was given instructions to bring friendship to the local peoples, he also engaged in warfare such as when he seized Manila in 1570. His construction of the initial settlement of Intramuros in 1571 laid the foundation for the walled city that would also symbolize the colonization of the Philippines and would, centuries later, be the site of Rizal’s imprisonment and execution. (Note, too, how Intramuros is today touted as a tourist attraction.) Not far from this Legazpi-Urdaneta Monument, is a towering statue of Lapu-

Lapu in Rizal Park, known as the Statue of the Sentinel of Freedom. This towering statue depicts an idealized and fictionalized image of Lapu-Lapu who, according to Philippine historian Ambeth Ocampo, was elderly during the encounter with Magellan at Mactan and would not have had the physique of a “gym-toned warrior”. It seems odd, perhaps, to have memorials to two opposites: one a figure of colonization, the other a “sentinel,” defender of Philippine freedom. And yet this is the complexity of historical memory, which itself represents how messy history can be. Many Filipinos who have spoken on the subject would say that, for better or worse, the Spanish period of colonization left a mark on the Philippines in the realms of religion, language, diet, and culture that define it today. Yet, at the same time, there are genuine attempts to rediscover the pre-Hispanic pasts of the Philippine Islands to reconstruct what was before the arrivals of Magellan and de Legazpi. Returning to recent events in Canada and its own reckoning with its imperial histories, we can note a stark contrast. Canadian society has become, in many ways, torn over the debates surrounding the memorialization of those who were responsible for injustices against Indigenous peoples. To put it another way, there is a growing resistance to celebrating those figures in Canadian history, but in the Philippines, there appears to be an ongoing appetite to remember Spanish colonial figures. A major difference is that Canada remains to this day a settler colony. That is, the colonizers never left and the Indigenous peoples in Canada remain colonized. In the Philippines, though, there is more control over the narrative as the Philippines has its political independence. The Philippines is thus able to memorialize and acknowledge its colonial past while celebrating its long history of colonial resistance with statues like the Sentinel of Freedom. The different ways in which societies remember their past reminds us of how history works. Not only is it complex, but the histories that we tell are edited. Certain elements are included, others are not; events may be over-celebrated, while others diminished in their importance. These decisions really tell us more about the society that is remembering and celebrating more than it does about the figures and events themselves. In my next column, I’ll pursue this thought in relation to the life and memory of José Rizal. Express Entry and proof of funds The proof of funds continues to be an important part of Express Entry submissions. You need to be aware of the minimum requirements and also the need to update your settlement fund numbers in your Express Entry profile. For existing profiles, the deadline was July 15, 2021, but Express Entry processing is continuing and also the need to provide proof of adequate income, according to changing requirements set down on charts based on family size. You will need to know which processing streams are exempt and which are not, and how to increase the

settlement funds on your profile, as required. Who needs proof of funds? You need proof of funds to meet the minimum requirements for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and the Federals Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). You do not need to show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and your family if you are applying under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or if you are authorized to work in Canada, or hold a valid job offer, even if you are applying under FSWP or FSTP. It is important, however, to ensure that you keep

your settlement funds up to date on your profile. You don’t know when the Express Entry selection is being made and do not want to be passed over. How much money do you need? The quick answer is there is never too much money, but there are minimum amounts based on family size. To determine your family size, you must include yourself, your spouse/partner, your children, and your spouse/ partner’s children. The spouse and children are included in this calculation even if they are permanent residents or citizens of Canada are not accompanying you to Canada.

What is acceptable as proof of funds? The funds must be liquid, or readily accessible. In other words, the money cannot be encumbered, owed to another or equity on property holdings. The applicant must use the funds to pay the family costs of living based on family size, if they are accompanying or not. The family funds can include money the couple have in joint accounts or separate accounts. The funds must be available throughout the process, both at time of submission and time of permanent resident issuance. The acceptable proof includes official letters from banks or financial institutions where the money is kept. The letters should be on letterhead, display contact information, and include the name of the account holder and any outstanding debts, such as credit cards. IRCC wants to see the current balance and a sixmonth account history or average balance for this period. When should you update your settlement funds? IRCC updates the funds every year based upon LICO (Low Income Cut Off) numbers, and it is

the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that they match or exceed the stated minimum. If you fail to update your funds, it could affect your eligibility. Make sure that you bring evidence of your settlement funds with you when you arrive in Canada. One caution is to ensure that you honestly disclose all funds. You must inform immigration authorities if you are bringing in more than $10,000 in equivalent Canadian funds or risk being fined, or have these funds seized. The value of funds is important because Canada wants to ensure that newcomers will not become a financial burden on Canada but have sufficient funds to finance their new lives upon landing in Canada. Children and chi – Feng shui fundamentals for children’s rooms In addition to the life benefits it provides, feng shui also offers a roadmap, so to speak, of not just how to decorate your space, but why, and this is never more important than it is when it comes to decorating your child’s bedroom. Naturally, children must feel safe, secure, and cared for to thrive, and feng shui offers guidelines that help foster those feelings. Feng shui believes that children can enjoy good health, growth, and happiness when the environment supports them. Here are ways to use feng shui in a child’s bedroom is to create a healthy, happy, and positive environment. 1. Put the child’s bed in the command position. Make sure your child can see the door from his or her bed easily but is not in direct line with the door. Position the bed so there is a solid wall behind it and that the bed has a nice, solid headboard. Make sure you child’s bed doesn’t share a wall with a toilet or see a toilet or bathroom from the bed as this can cause health problems. Bunk beds are also not advised. Children need room to grow, and the bed overhead exerts pressure on the child below. Because there is empty space below them, children on the top bunk may feel less secure. This also means that children shouldn’t sleep under sloping ceilings as this can cause depression or insecurities, or health issues like headaches. Avoid pushing a child’s bed into a corner because this can cause energy that creates defensiveness, insecurity, and sometimes, bullying.

What is West Nile virus? West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito borne virus that can cause severe illness including encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and can sometimes result in long term complications and death. The risk of WNV varies from year to year based on precipitation, temperature, mosquito populations and other factors. It only takes a single bite from an infected mosquito to contract WNV. There is no vaccine, cure, or specific treatment for WNV. • Who is at risk? In southern Manitoba, anyone can be exposed to an infected

If possible, try to have a separate bedroom for each child. If this isn’t possible, there are lots of decorative ways to create division and privacy within a room so that each child has their own space. 2. Create relationship harmony and happiness in your child’s bedroom. A photo of the whole family is helpful for creating loving bonds with the child for his or her family. Often, parents have photos of their children in the bedroom, but children don’t have a photo of their parents in their own bedrooms. This is opposite of what feng shui recommends. Parents should not have photos of their children in their bedroom, but children should one of their parents as a way of promoting their feelings of being loved. Having a photo of the parents can often be helpful is the child is misbehaving as it subtly exerts the authority of the parents. 3. Make the decor balanced to encourage a balanced child. Remember to feng shui focus on a balance when decorating your child’s bedroom. That means there should be a harmony of decorative elements and colours in the decor. A bedroom that has a strong element, such as water, fire, or wood (jungle scenes), can all create imbalances of energies, and that could create difficulties for your child. For instance, a blue bedroom with beach or ocean murals will exert too much water energy and that can create an unhealthy environment and may even lead to respiratory ailments. This

Culex tarsalis mosquito from June to September. The highest risk period occurs when the infected mosquito populations are greatest, typically from mid-July through the end of August. Individuals spending time outdoors at work (ex: construction, farming, etc.), or recreationally (ex: gardening, golfing, at the cottage) are at greater risk of exposure. • What are the symptoms? While some people who get WNV show no symptoms and do not become ill, others may show mild symptoms such as headache, fever, fatigue, and body aches. Severe illness has occurred in all age groups. However,

is especially important if the child has any health problems, particularly asthma or breathing problems. Strong red or primary colours may also be overly stimulating. Too many bright colours can prevent deep sleep and that can affect the child’s health, such as their growth, and influence their behavior. A restful, neutral bedroom with coloured accents is one way to ensure the bedroom is wellbalanced for study, play, and rest. 4. Avoid dark environments and choose light-filled rooms. A room should inspire and intrigue a child to learn and promote his or her sense of imagination and creativity. Select decorative items and symbols that create curiosity, such as a globe or solar system mobile. Avoid large clocks, ferocious or scary animals, and instead choose images of role models such as Olympic athletes, writers, maps, or sports your child is interested in. Ensure there is plenty of lighting, especially natural light. Add lighting for the desk and bedside table but do be sure that windows can be closed off for privacy. 5. Create a space for study and accomplishments. Having a dedicated space, including a desk and lamp where your child can study, demonstrates the importance of education, encourages your child’s educational achievement, and builds their esteem. To encourage academic progress, create a reading or study corner in the northeast, or

severe illness has occurred more commonly in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems. Recovery from these severe symptoms can take months or years. See your doctor promptly if you develop any of these severe WNV symptoms. • Severe headache • High fever • Mental confusion • Muscle weakness • Coma • Paralysis • What can I do to protect myself? There is no vaccine, cure, or specific treatment for WNV.

education, corner of the bedroom. If space is tight, add artwork that encourages education. Try to position the desk so that your child can see the door. To build up confidence, add a wall that lets them see their accomplishments. Display drawings, crafts, awards, trophies, ribbons, or other special items, such as tests with good scores or letters from teachers. Place items here that have brought special recognition. Doing so reinforces that you are proud of your child’s efforts and builds up their personal positivity. 6. Clear clutter so your child can rest and be creative. Cluttered rooms can create unhappy kids. Creating space and visual openness helps your child to feel less pressured, and more likely to be imaginative and creative. More is definitely not more when it comes to kids. Shelves or closets that are stuffed full of knickknacks, toys and items can exert excess pressure. Give your child some open, clear space that

gives them a visual rest in their bedroom. This will help them relax, rest more fully and feel more contented. 7. Avoid electronics in a child’s bedroom. A child’s bedroom should be a place of rest. With so many electronics, such as TVs, computers, and tablets or phones available in our age of technology, it’s important that children have a break from all of this with a space that is technology-free. This is helpful for children so they can fully disconnect in the bedroom and be more rested. Kathryn Weber has over 20+ years of feng shui study, practice, and professional consultation. Prevention is the first line of defence against WNV. • Apply an appropriate insect repellent when outdoors and follow the instructions on the label. • Wear light coloured, loosefitting clothing with long sleeves and pant legs while outdoors. • Reduce time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn. • Make sure your doors and window screens fit tightly and are free of holes. • Reduce the mosquito habitat around your home by regularly cleaning and emptying water holding containers such as bird baths, wading pools, children’s toys, eavestroughs, tarp covers and plant trays. • Ensure that rain barrels are covered with a fine screen and tightly sealed around the downspout. • Clean your yard of old tires, empty flowerpots, buckets, and

any other debris where water collects. • Keep grass mowed and vegetation trimmed around high use areas (ex: doorways & seating areas). As of May 2013, Health Canada has approved the following active ingredients to be safe and effective mosquito repellents: • DEET (no more than 30% strength) • Icaridin (Picaridin) • Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (p-methane-3, 8 diol) • Soybean Oil Always follow the instructions on the label; application rates may vary by age. Mayo Clinic Q and A: Kidney stones and calcium DEAR MAYO CLINIC: I have trouble with kidney stones and recently found out they are calcium oxalate stones. While I have stopped consuming all dairy products, I know that I need calcium as I age for bone health. Would adding in almond milk or another type of plant milk help? How do I take care of both my kidneys and bones? ANSWER: It sounds like your concern about milk and other dairy products is that their calcium may spur the development of more kidney stones. But people who’ve had calcium oxalate kidney stones need a certain amount of calcium in their diets. Although almond milk and other plant-based milks, such as soy milk, contain calcium, they also contain oxalate. People with a history of calcium oxalate stones often are cautioned to avoid oxalate-rich foods. Cow’s milk doesn’t have oxalate, but it has the calcium and many other beneficial nutrients that you need, so it is a good choice for you. Kidney stones made of calcium oxalate form when urine contains more of these substances than the fluid in the urine can dilute. When that happens, the calcium and oxalate form crystals. At the same time, the urine may lack citrate, a substance that

prevent the crystals from sticking together, creating an ideal environment for kidney stones to form. It may seem to make sense that when calcium and oxalate make up the kidney stones that avoiding both should help. But calcium is a critical part of your diet. Your body needs it not only to keep your bones healthy, but also to regulate your blood pressure and aid in muscle function. Oxalate is a naturally occurring substance found in many foods. Some fruits and vegetables, as well as nuts and chocolate, have high oxalate levels. Your liver also produces oxalate. A key for preventing growth of calcium oxalate stones is to get the right amount of calcium: 1,200 milligrams daily. If you have calcium-rich foods or beverages at each meal, you lower the amount of oxalate absorbed into your bloodstream, reducing your risk of new kidney stones. For the best stone prevention, calcium should come from food. When you consider good sources of calcium, dairy products are high on the list. Check the Nutrition Facts label to find out how much calcium is in these and other beverages and foods. But if you are not consuming milk or yogurt at meals, talk to your health care provider about

calcium supplements or pills. In addition to getting the right amount of calcium, you can make other important changes to reduce your risk of calcium oxalate kidney stones. It’s important to drink plenty of water and other fluids. Drink about 8 to 10 ounces of liquid each hour you’re awake or at least 2 liters per day. The easiest way to know whether you’re drinking enough fluids is to look at your urine. It should be almost clear. Another important change is to reduce your sodium intake. Excess dietary sodium leads to higher calcium levels in urine, increasing the risk of all calciumbased kidney stones. Aim for less than 2,000 milligrams of sodium

per day. Read labels to know how much sodium is in the foods you eat and drink. You also may need to cut down on foods rich in oxalate. Unfortunately, oxalate content is not listed on food labels. The highest amounts of oxalate are found in certain fruits, vegetables, and other plant foods, such as beans, nuts, and bran cereals or breads. Meats, eggs, dairy products, white rice, and pasta are generally low in oxalate. If your health care provider recommends that you limit oxalate-rich foods, consider meeting with a dietitian to evaluate your diet. Sugar and fat can raise the risk of developing kidney stones, so limiting these in your diet also

What to do if you have any Covid-19 symptoms Anyone who develops symptoms of Covid-19 should self-isolate and visit www. manitoba.ca/covid19/ to use the online screening tool, or call Health Links–Info Santé at 204788-8200 or toll-free at 1-888315-9257 for health guidance on how to seek testing.

Symptoms may include: • Cough • Headache • Fever/ chills • Muscle aches • Sore throat/ hoarse voice • Shortness of breath/ breathing difficulties • Loss of taste or smell

• Vomiting, or diarrhea for more than 24 hours • Poor feeding if an infant • Runny nose • Fatigue • Nausea or loss of appetite • Conjunctivitis (pink eye) • Skin rash of unknown cause

While many people will develop only mild symptoms, some groups appear to be more vulnerable to COVID-19. Those at higher risk typically develop more serious, even fatal, symptoms such as pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome and kidney failure.

will help. Finally, too much meat, chicken or fish can increase the likelihood of kidney stones. Limit these foods to no more than 3 ounces at your midday meal and 3 ounces at your evening meal. For more information on diet changes that can lower your risk for kidney stones, talk to your health care provider or a dietitian. He or she can guide your dietary choices to reduce your risk of stones while still getting the nutrition you need. — Katherine Zeratsky, R.D.N., Endocrinology/ Nutrition, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota Courtesy: Mayo Clinic News Network

High risk groups include those: • 60 years of age and older • living with chronic health conditions (e.g. diabetes, heart, renal or chronic lung conditions) • with weakened immune systems (e.g. cancer) Symptoms of COVID-19 or other coronaviruses may take up to 14 days to appear after exposure to the virus.

Jim Agapito on recovering his cultural roots by Lucille Nolasco Garrido Editor’s note: Jim Agapito hosts Recovering Filipino, which airs nationally Mondays at 11:30 a.m. on CBC Radio One, 990 AM and 89.3 FM in Winnipeg. The following is an interview conducted by Lucille Nolasco (PE) with Jim Agapito (JA) Having a bit of crisis with your cultural identity? You are not alone. Filipino-Canadian writer and filmmaker Jim Agapito is on a quest to redeem himself and take back what he seems to have lost, with the help of family. This is his story. PE: Tell us about your childhood. Did you grow up in a typical Filipino family? JA: I would say yes – “kinda” – in a sense that my mom and lola (she lived with us until I was 15) followed many traditions. However, being the rebellious child that I was, I pretty much didn’t follow them as a teen. I know it bothered the family as I didn’t eat much of the Filipino food they cooked, and I wasn’t the most “churchy” person. Mom and Lola still loved me, but I know it bothered them. I’m sorry again fam. PE: What language did you use mostly at home? JA: We spoke a combination of Tagalog and English. Truth be told it was mostly English. I would respond in English when they’d speak to me in Tagalog. I’d also confuse a lot of Tagalog words and they’d just have to speak to me in English. PE: Did you like eating Filipino food? Your favourite? Least favourite? JA: No! I don’t eat a lot of Filipino food because of seafood allergies! However, I love almost all desserts and lumpia is my favourite! Least favourite is anything with seafood and dinuguan. PE: Have you experienced being or feeling “different” in school, because of your being a Filipino? What did you do about it? JA: It depends. I went to a private catholic school from kindergarten to Grade 8. A majority of my classmates were Filipino. However, when I went to a private high school for some time, I experienced it. There was a class war. I come from an immigrant family that worked hard to come to Canada and give a better future for their

children. (I was born in Canada). So, classmates didn’t have an idea how hard my family worked to provide for us because they came from very privileged, white families. But it also didn’t come with my struggle with my Filipino peers. Although I loved hip-hop, R&B and pop, I gravitated toward heavier music such as rock, metal and punk. (Thanks Tito Bong). Other Filipino kids couldn’t get it and I was ostracized by them. It made me different and a black sheep, which probably removed me from some of my Filipino friends growing up. Bbut we’re all friends now. PE: Have you ever felt ashamed of being Filipino? JA: I wouldn’t call it being ashamed, but I didn’t want to be labelled as different. When I was a young punk rocker going to concerts as the only Filipino attending, I wore it as a badge of honour. Why? Because no one cared. It was just about the music. However, when it came to my professional life, I was tokenized as the “Asian Filmmaker.” That bothered me. I wanted to be known as the awesome filmmaker that happened to be Filipino. I was ashamed that people couldn’t see past my race rather than my skill as a storyteller. PE: Your show is entitled Recovering Filipino. What exactly did you lose that you want to recover? When and how did this realization happen? JA: This all started a couple of years ago when my lola, who was headed home to the Philippines, called me a bad Filipino. She pointed out that I’m not fluent in Tagalog and that I don’t know much about our culture. That hurt. I’ve always been kind of the “black sheep” in my family, but I had no idea my lola felt that way about me. So, I decided to do something about it and recover my Filipino identity. Hence the show’s title: Recovering Filipino. There’s also another reason behind the name, but I would rather have listeners learn what that is, by listening to the show. PE:What do you like best about being a Filipino? JA: Everything. PE: What traits or abilities do you think are uniquely Filipino? JA: - Our love for the three B’s of Filipino culture - boxing, basketball and beauty pageants. How we embrace superstitions and religion

- How we always give visitors food to take home - How we love sweet food and sugar (Why we love sweet spaghetti) - How we constantly gain new family at parties - How we love karaoke and it’s a competition PE: Do you have a “Proud to be Pinoy” moment you can share with us? JA: The moment my mom said I could teach the younger Filipinos about our culture and traditions throughout this show. That was amazing. That completely validates what I’m trying to do with this show. But I still need Lola’s approval! PE: What do you wish to accomplish with the Recovering Filipino show? JA: Like me, I know many second-generation Canadians who are also mystified by many of our traditions and who haven’t asked their parents about them, or their parents can’t explain them. Since the podcast launched a few weeks ago, we’ve heard from many young and not-so-young Filipinos who’ve said they can relate to the questions I’ve been asking and who’ve thanked me for asking them. There’s this real thirst for second-generation kids like me to better understand where my family came from. It’s like I say at the start of every episode, there are about 10.2 million Filipinos living outside the Philippines. So, if you aren’t Filipino yourself, you’re likely Filipino adjacent. So, while this show might be about recovering my Filipino identity, I think nonFilipino listeners will learn about their Filipino neighbours. But I hope it also pushes them to ask questions about their own cultural identities. Also, it’s just a really fun show, and my mom’s laugh is guaranteed to put a smile on your face! PE: Anything else you’d like to share with our readers? JA: I want people to have fun with the listening experience. I’m hoping that these stories will make other second-generation Filipinos want to learn more about the culture. Recovering Filipino airs nationally Mondays at 11:30 a.m. on CBC Radio One, 990 AM and 89.3 FM in Winnipeg. Episodes are also available any time on CBC Listen, Apple podcasts, Google podcasts and anywhere you find your favourite podcasts.

BEA... From page 12 I’ve ever had to make in my life. And if there is anything that I have learned during the pandemic, it is that life is short and that we only live once. And we have to seize every moment, we have to seize opportunities and we have to be able to embrace change. Ngayon pa lang, nagpapasalamat na po ako sa aking GMA bosses for opening new doors for me. I am beyond excited that today I can finally say I am officially a Kapuso. To new beginnings.” Bea is set to headline the Philippine adaptation of the hit Korean film A Moment to Remember with Alden Richards. Aside from this, she will star in an upcoming primetime series on GMA.

Lia Libradilla, the lovable and compassionate youngest member of the affluent Libradilla family who will fall for Louie despite their differences; and Tom Rodriguez in his most offbeat role yet as Brian Libradilla, the stubborn and bullheaded eldest heir of the Libradilla family who never sees Louie as his equal and disapproves of his affection for Lia. Alden, who at first felt apprehensive to take on the role of Louie, admits that his character’s depth prompted him to accept the project, “When we started reading the script, iba ‘yung binabasa mo na siya from naririnig mo lang ‘yung kuwento. That started the fire within me to create this character na very relatable. With the cast, the story, the director, I think this is going to be one of my best teleseryes in five years.” Jasmine, in turn, reveals what is the secret behind her undeniable on-screen chemistry with Alden, “Pareho kaming in love sa characters namin and sa story nilang dalawa so that makes the chemistry so much easier kasi ramdam mo ‘yung kilig ng character mo. We’ve done projects before and although short period lang ‘yun, it was still enough to build a good foundation. I’m grateful kasi it’s been so fun and easy to work with Alden. Meanwhile, Tom shares how he resonates with the complexity of his character, “At first glance, it may seem like mahirap makarelate kay Brian. But as I read the script even more, one thing became so clear – that he’s a wounded person. Having been wounded myself in my life, maybe not to the same extent that he has, mas na-curious ako what makes him that way. I realized that he’s only hungry for love and affection.” Playing equally vital roles are two of the country’s finest dramatic actresses Dina Bonnevie and Jaclyn Jose. Making this series even grander is the glittering roster of cast including Sid Lucero, Kelley Day, Yana Asistio,

That’s basically the whole concept of the show.” Lexi, on the other hand, expresses her utmost gratitude for being part of the show, “I’m beyond grateful because good things happened even though nagkaroon ng pandemic and

one of the biggest blessings I received is FLEX. This is my first time being a host and doing new things in a show. I’m really excited, grateful, and just happy.” Joaquin, in turn, reveals the camaraderie that has blossomed among the cast, “Everybody does well together, nage-enjoy kaming lahat. CRISTY...

See CRISTY p14

PAGE 14

CRISTY...

SHOWBIZ SHOWBUZZ PILIPINO EXPRESS

istasyon.

Ibang-iba talaga kapag may pamilyang nagmamahal. At naganap nga.

Nakatuwaan lang naming See CRISTY p15

Ang sabi ni Tasha Spillet Sumner, isang community activist sa kaniyang tweet: “We are in mourning but I have no energy to grieve for fallen statues. There is nothing more sacred or worthy of protection than living beings, those that have been stolen from our circles and those of us still here, in this together.” Sa kabilang banda ay matapang namang isinulat sa Facebook post ni Cathy Cox, MLA for Kildonan-River East ito: “The actions by individuals to vandalize public property at the Manitoba Legislative Building on July 1 are unacceptable. They are a major setback for those who are working toward real reconciliation and do nothing to advance this important goal.”

Here’s an analogy.

Meegwetch! Noel Lapuz ay dating OFW sa Middle East (Dubai at Qatar). Nagtrabaho nang sampung taon sa City Hall ng Taguig bilang Human Resource Management Officer. CRISTY...

Saan man naroroon ngayon

– CSF

Now we just need that extra effort by every Manitoban not yet vaccinated to roll up your sleeve and push us across the finish line so we can fully reopen, safely and quickly,” said Pallister.
