In today’s fast-paced world, we do not place enough emphasis on the importance of sleep. There is always so much to do with work, school, social events, and kids’ activities. It can be a lot to balance!

For children, this is especially important because the lack of sleep can contribute to obesity and behavioural and learning problems. Teenagers who do not get enough sleep have a higher likelihood of developing depression, academic challenges and risks for getting injured. Below is an example of one family’s challenges with sleep, and how they were successful in changing things.

“I don’t want to go to school!” cried six-year-old Joey. After struggling to get him to eat his breakfast and get dressed, his mother Tess was almost in tears herself. She and her husband Mark had noticed that this was a pattern. Most mornings since the beginning of the school year, Joey was grumpy in the mornings and complained about going to school. They assumed that he missed his Kindergarten teacher and friends, and that he was having a difficult time adjusting to a full day of school. But Grade 1 started months ago, and mornings were still a struggle. They made sure to put Joey to bed at 9:00 p.m. every night so that by the time the family awoke at 6:00 a.m., he had gotten

nine hours of sleep. Plus, to Tess and Mark, he didn’t look tired.

After Joey’s teacher noticed that he was having trouble focusing on the lessons and was sometimes being aggressive with the other kids, they took Joey to see the doctor.

After the pediatrician ruled out any appetite or medical concerns, Tess and Mark were surprised when the doctor said that nine hours of sleep per night probably were not enough for Joey. According to the Canadian Sleep Society, school aged children require 10 to 11 hours of sleep per night.

There are two types of sleep, REM (rapid eye movement) or dreaming sleep, and NREM (nonrapid eye movement), which includes deep restorative sleep. Both children and adults need both types to feel fully rested in the morning.

If sleep is not long enough or is disrupted during the night, children can experience:

• trouble concentrating

• memory difficulties

• social and behavioural problems

(e.g. aggression, trouble sharing)

• increased chance of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease

• increased chance of injury and catching viruses

According to Aboutkidshealth. ca, a quick way to assess whether your child (age five to 12) is getting enough sleep is to ask yourself

The caregiver community, here and abroad, cheered Canada’s decision to reopen the Home Care Worker Immigration Pilots on March 31, 2025. The Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot were five-year pilot programs that let qualified caregivers and their dependent family members come to Canada with the goal of becoming permanent residents. They ended in 2024 but are now being reopened. The date of reopening is set but the requirements are in some ways guess work at this time and the application process is yet to be released. There are some things that observers have noted about the process.

The new pilots will replace the previous caregiver immigration pathways that expired in June 2024. The pilots will provide a direct route to permanent residency for eligible workers. The pilots support

a growing demand for skilled home care providers.

It is possible that the 2025 version may follow the previous pattern of two streams – Home Childcare Provider NOC 44100 or Home Support Worker NOC 44101, but this is not clear. The NOC 44100 applicant should have cared for children in their home or an employer’s residence for the six months or one year (to be announced). Work in an institutional workplace, such as a nursing home would not count. The NOC 44101 also requires work in an employer’s private home and not an institutional workplace. The caution is that this detail has not yet been released. In terms of language proficiency, candidates must provide a demonstrated proof of language, educational requirements, and proof of recent related work experience. The candidate must demonstrate

The importance of sleep for children and teenagers

whether:

• child falls asleep in less than 20 to 30 minutes of bedtime

• my child wakes up easily in the morning, at the expected time

• my child appears well rested during the day

• my child stays awake without taking a nap during the day (if they have already outgrown naps)

• my child stays awake during quiet activities, such as car trips and watching television

If you said yes, to all five questions then your child is likely well rested. If not, there are several steps to take to promote health sleep patterns:

• Prioritize your child’s sleep over extracurricular activities.

Although it is great to see kids involved in sports, music, dance and other activities, if there is too much going on during the week, or if they are scheduled too close to bedtime, they could interfere with your child’s well-being.

• Make sure that your child has a healthy breakfast in the morning and avoids caffeine, which is found in chocolate, soda pop, tea and coffee. If you provide a snack before bedtime, a light carbohydrate snack (e.g. cheese and crackers) or warm milk, which contains the sleepinducing amino acid tryptophan, will encourage sleep.

• Regular exercise and exposure to sunlight during the day is important to regulate sleep-wake patterns. Avoid intense exercise

at least three hours before sleep because adrenalin and an increase to core body temperature can interfere with sleep.

• Encourage your children to fall asleep on their own, and make sure that their bedroom is dark, cool, and quiet. If children wake up in the middle of the night and find that things are exactly the same as when they went to sleep, they will likely fall back asleep quickly. Stay away from methods such as rocking them to sleep or playing music because you and the music will probably not be around at 3:00 in the morning.

• Eliminate television, video games and other electronics at least two hours before bedtime. The screen light, increased brain activity, and any tension in the body can prolong sleep.

• Establish a predictable routine.

Some parents choose to stick to the Four B’s at nighttime – Bath, Brush Teeth, Book and Bedtime. On the weekends, make sure your child goes to bed and wakes up around the same time. We sometimes think that allowing them to sleep later will allow them to “catch up” on rest, but it does not work in the long run.

After Tess and Mark introduced these steps in their son’s daily routine, they saw results almost immediately. He woke up on his own and his teacher reported that he was doing better at school. They also started to incorporate changes in their own routines and sleep patterns, promoting the family’s health and wellness overall.

proficiency in English or French. The following language test results provide proof of language competency: Canadian English language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP); International English Language Testing System (IELTS); Pearson Test of English (PTE Core); Text devaluation de François (TEF Canada); or Test de connaissance de francais (TCF Canada). The test results of the general version of these tests should meet or surpass the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) scale 4.

Applicants must have an education equivalent to a Canadian high school diploma. The applicants require an educational diploma from a Canadian high school or foreign education equivalent to the Canadian secondary school diploma supported by an Educational Credentials Assessment (ECA) from a recognized education credentials assessment agency in Canada. The approved agency must be one from the following list: Comparative

Education Service (CES) - University of Toronto; World Education Services (WES); International Qualifications Assessment Services (IQAS); or International Credential Evaluation Services (ICAS) - British Columbia Institute of Technology. There is also a chance that the foreign education can be authenticated by the Medical Council of Canada, Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada or the Canadian Architectural Certification Board.

The applicant will require a fulltime employment letter for home care in the child or adult care sector. The department may also consider job offers from organizations providing in-home care services. However, job offers from institutional workplaces will not be considered.

Applicants who possess recent and relevant experience inside Canada will also be considered. They must be able to show that they possess the necessary skillset to perform their job duties in Canada.

In terms of the next step, all

potential applicants and supporters must wait for the official opening of the Canada Home Care Worker Immigration Pilots because the details of the program have not yet been released. Watch for the details of the program, the application forms, process, and quotas in the coming weeks. However, it is important that potential applicants have the necessary experience, credentials, language requirements, education credential assessments, and bona fide job offer. The process will be competitive, so it important to be prepared.

OUR HEALTH

What to do if you get a respiratory infection

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, respiratory infections like colds, flu and RSV are rising across the U.S.

When you get sick, it’s helpful to understand how to manage your symptoms effectively, especially if you’re at higher risk for complications. Dr. Tina Ardon, a family medicine physician at Mayo Clinic, offers tips for managing common viral illnesses and when to seek medical care.

Recognizing symptoms

Flu symptoms include sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, fever, body aches and fatigue. These symptoms may overlap with other illnesses, like the common cold, but key differences exist. Colds

generally develop gradually, while flu symptoms typically appear suddenly within two or three days of exposure to the virus. Managing your symptoms

Start using over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers or cough suppressants to alleviate your symptoms. Staying hydrated is essential; drink plenty of water, broth or warm tea to nourish your body. Using a humidifier or taking a steamy shower can help ease congestion and make breathing easier.

Your body needs time to heal, so rest is crucial. “If you can, I highly recommend you stay home from school and work so your immune system can recover,” says Dr. Ardon.

Try the following to help manage symptoms:

• Stay hydrated: Drink water, juice, or warm lemon water with honey to ease congestion and prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol, coffee, and caffeinated drinks.

Use warm liquids: Sip chicken soup, tea or warm apple juice to help with congestion.

Try honey: Honey can soothe coughs in adults and children over 1 year old. Add it to warm tea or lemon water.

• Rest: Let your body recover with plenty of rest.

Add moisture: Use a cool-mist humidifier or vaporizer to relieve stuffiness. Clean and refill daily. Planning ahead

It’s tax season again, and one question I often hear from parents is, “Should my teenager who works part-time and won’t owe any taxes still bother filing a return?”

While it may seem unnecessary at first glance, the truth is that there are many reasons why your working teenager should file. It’s not just about paying taxes – it’s about unlocking future benefits, recovering withheld money, and building sound financial habits that can set them up for success.

Access to government benefits

One of the most compelling reasons to file early is to access government benefits. In Canada, once an individual turns 19, they become eligible for programs such as the GST/HST credit and, in many provinces, the Carbon Tax rebate. These programs provide regular

payments designed to help lower and middle-income Canadians offset rising living costs. However, to receive these payments, a tax return must be filed. Without this record, they may miss out on payments that they are otherwise entitled to receive. Encouraging your teenager to start filing tax returns early helps establish the necessary paper trail to ensure they’ll get these benefits when the time comes.

Recovering withheld taxes

Additionally, even though many part-time jobs don’t generate enough income to owe taxes, employers are still required to withhold income tax from their employees’ paycheques. This is especially common if your child works more than a few hours per week. Depending on their total income for the year, they may be

For people at higher risk of flu complications—such as older adults or those who are pregnant or have chronic conditions or weakened immune systems—consider discussing a care plan with your doctor before getting sick. “If you’re at higher risk, we may recommend closer monitoring or additional care,” says Dr. Ardon.

High-risk patients diagnosed with the flu might be prescribed antiviral medications. These prescription drugs, available as pills, liquids, inhaled powders, or intravenous solutions, target the flu virus directly and require a medical prescription.

It’s important to note that flu antivirals differ from antibiotics, which treat bacterial infections, and antiviral treatments for other illnesses like COVID-19. Fluspecific antivirals won’t work for COVID-19 and vice versa.

Taking immune strengthening supplements may be for adults who want to supplement their diet with additional immune supportive nutrients such as vitamins A and D3, magnesium, zinc, and copper, and omega-3 essential fatty acids. Always consult your health provider.

When to seek medical attention

While most respiratory illnesses resolve on their own, you should seek medical care if your symptoms worsen or if you experience any of the following:

• Trouble breathing

• Chest pain

• Dizziness or confusion

• Severe dehydration or weakness

For children, also watch for:

• Fast breathing or blue lips

• No tears when crying or no urination

• Symptoms that improve but then return or worsen

Dr. Ardon says recovering from a respiratory virus can be managed at home for most people. “Knowing when to get help can make all the difference,” she says.

Zinc supplements may help reduce the length of colds when taken within 24 hours after symptoms start. Editor’s note: Taking vitamin and mineral supplements is a short-term measure. Always consult your health provider.

Why your teenage children should file a tax return

entitled to a full refund of the tax that was withheld. By filing a return, your teenager can recover this money, which could amount to hundreds of dollars depending on how much they earned. For a young person, getting that money back can provide a financial boost, whether they use it for school, savings, or daily expenses.

Building RRSP contribution room

Filing a tax return also begins the process of building up RRSP (Registered Retirement Savings Plan) contribution room. In Canada, RRSP room is calculated as 18 per cent of earned income. For example, if your child earns $1,000 in a year, they’ll accumulate $180 in contribution room. While they may not need to contribute to an RRSP now, this unused contribution room carries forward indefinitely. Over time, this can grow into a significant amount of space for tax-deferred retirement savings. When your child eventually secures a full-time job and has the ability to save more, they’ll appreciate having this room already built up. It can be particularly useful for large expenses, such as buying a home under the Home Buyers’ Plan, or for planning long-term retirement savings.

Developing financial literacy and life skills

Beyond the financial advantages, filing a tax return helps your child develop important life skills and financial literacy. Taxes are a fact of life, and many adults experience anxiety and confusion around filing their returns each year. By learning how to navigate the process at a young age, your teenager will gain confidence in managing their finances. They’ll become familiar with concepts like income, deductions, credits, and refunds. This habit of organizing tax slips and tracking earnings is an invaluable skill that can make them more financially responsible in other areas of life. It can also spark an early understanding of how the financial system works, which will serve them well as they take on more complex financial tasks, such as budgeting, investing, and retirement planning.

Keeping records current with the CRA

It’s also worth mentioning that filing tax returns year after year keeps their records current with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). This can reduce issues down the line when they need to apply for programs such as student financial aid, loans, or even tax credits related

to education or childcare when they start their own families. Keeping an up-to-date tax history makes it easier to access various financial services and government programs throughout life.

A smart financial move for the future

Even if your child earns very little and owes no taxes, filing a tax return is a smart financial move. It can unlock access to future government benefits, recover any taxes that were withheld, and build RRSP room that will be valuable down the road. Perhaps just as importantly, it introduces your teenager to essential financial responsibilities and habits. Filing taxes isn’t just about compliance with government rules it’s a foundation for financial planning and security.

So, if your teenager worked part-time this year, encourage them to file their return. It’s a small effort now that could result in significant benefits in both the short and long term. By filing early and consistently, they’ll be better prepared to take control of their finances and capitalize on opportunities that many overlook. by Michael Silver, B.Comm. Efren Herrera Villarba became the ninth president of the Philippine Association of Manitoba (PAM) when he was elected in 1992. At 27, Efren immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1975 from TingaItaas, Batangas. I first heard of Efren when I was researching the narrative of Filipino Musicians and Activists of Winnipeg back in 2014. Jimmy Olais, President of the Filipino Association of Musicians and Other Unknown Artists-FAMOUS (1997-2007), and Jason Paredes, musician, and entrepreneur, assert that Efren was the one who drafted the constitution of FAMOUS and coined its name (L. Abad, Rhythms and Resistance, 96).

Moving to Canada

The year that Efren moved to Canada was a dark period in Philippine history. The year 1975 was just three years after the declaration of Martial Law, which lasted until 1981. The regime was eventually ousted in 1986 with the EDSA Uprising. Efren’s daughter Leilani Villarba shared that her father got frustrated with the blatant corruption of the Marcos dictatorship, and was convinced that his children would have a bleak future if they stayed. Another reason for leaving was Efren had a radio show oppositional to martial law.

In one of his blogs Retireless (2013), Efren wrote that he finished

BSC, majoring in Accounting from the Western Philippine Colleges, and earned his MBA from De La Salle University, a prestigious school that produced smart-activist alumni in the early 70s. Upon arriving in Winnipeg, Efren found work and eventually thrived as a car salesman for Vickar Community Chev-Olds until 1990 when he went on disability. On February 23, 1995, he had a successful heart transplant. Back on his feet, he worked as a liaison officer for the Winnipeg School Board from 1997 until his retirement in 2013.

Grassroots journalism

In my interview with Ralph Buñag, the fourth president of PAM, he remembers Efren already helping PAM from 1976 to 1977. By 1980, Efren started a publication, Philippine Echo, a community activist newspaper focused on local issues and Philippine concerns. This significant project would last until 1984. In addition, he was also the editor-in-chief of The PAM Today the newsletter of the Philippine Association of Manitoba. These significant contributions can be aptly described as grassroots journalism.

Workers’ organizing and protection

Butch Mendiola, a member of Kilusan ng Manggagawang Pilipino-Winnipeg (KAMPI) and a pioneer Filipino union leader in Winnipeg (1998-2008),

Efren Villarba: Community service and grassroots journalism

recalls Efren organizing the Neighbourhood Organization of Workers or NOW in 2004 with Vice President Leo Alonzo (CAW Shop Steward) to help advance workers’ rights in the city.

Butch proudly remembers that he was one of the recipients of NOW’s advocacy when he filed a complaint with the labour board. This was confirmed by Phoebe de Leon, CAW’s local 3000 president, and Susan Rodriguez, a long-time community activist.

Advocacy for seniors

Leilani shared that her father “wrote the proposal to get funding for converting the FILCASA building into the first Filipino Seniors Housing Complex. Efren worked closely with Fel Rodriguez to negotiate a deal with the city and other leaders/politicians. “In 1991, FILCASA was established” (L. Villarba, text message, February 19, 2025).

People person

Phoebe de Leon vividly recalls that Efren’s house was like an MLA office. She quipped, “It was open to everybody. It was like a United Nations branch where all kinds of folks go to seek help and advice with various issues.” It’s no wonder that even now when I ask community folks, I hear sympathetic and positive remarks about Efren. The community is truly

Efren Villarba

fortunate to have had Efren for most of his active life and it was a great loss when he passed away in 2020 during the onslaught of the pandemic. There is still a lot more to be told about Efren Villarba and his involvement in the community.

Given his educational background, compassion, and social democratic spirit, he could have contributed more. Efren Villarba is survived by his wife Norma P. Villarba and their four children.

BINI to charm its way into global stardom this 2025

BINI, a Filipino girl group, will embark on a world tour this year after capturing Filipinos’ hearts in 2024,

The group became the first Filipino artists to enter the Top Artist Global Chart on Spotify and surpassed Taylor Swift to number one on the Philippines’ Daily Top Artists Chart in June last year. BINI also became the first Filipino act to win the Best Asia Act award at the MTV Europe Music Awards

The Filipino girl group will embark on the BINIverse World Tour this summer, stopping off in the UK, United Arab Emirates and North America.

It will see the group headline arena venues, marking their biggest shows to date, including London’s Wembley Arena on 25 May.

They’ll also take the tour to Madison Square Garden in New York City, as well as venues in Washington, Boston, Texas, Las Vegas and Vancouver.

The nation’s girl group sold out its Valentine’s weekend concert at the Philippine Arena, which also served as the kickoff show for the BINIverse World Tour

In selling out the 55,000-seater arena, BINI became the first Filipino

act to hold a sold-out solo show in the venue.

In 2024, the group’s shows at the New Frontier Theater and the Araneta Coliseum were the hottest tickets in town following the success of hits like Karera, Salamin, Salamin, and Pantropiko.

“[OPM is] thriving. When this year started, it felt like everything was about OPM. It was not just the one-day sold-out concerts, there were also some two-day concerts selling out in some of the biggest arenas in the country,” BINI’s Jhoanna said.

Jhoanna also admitted feeling pressure as the eight girls embark on a crucial year for their music careers.

“There will always be pressure, but, as a group, we don’t want to think about making it into a chart or topping a list; as long as it is from our hearts, it will resonate with the fans,” she said.

This February, BINI released its latest all-English single, Blink Twice. It features singles Cherry on Top and Blink Twice and marks their second EP (extended play) overall.

The group, made up of Aiah, Colet, Jhoanna, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, and Sheena, also plans to release more songs as they tour the globe in 2025.

Kris Aquino makes first public appearance

Kris Aquino made a surprise appearance at the People Asia’s People of the Year 2025 on Tuesday night, February 25.

In a quick chat with the press, the Queen of All Media said she attended the event to support her good friend, Filipino fashion designer Michael Leyva, who was one of the awardees.

“There are people who say that I’ll be there for you or maaasahan mo ako. But Michael has proven that so many times and in so many ways,” Kris said about Michael.

Coincidentally, Kris’s appearance happened on the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, a historic event that involved her late parents, Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr. and former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino

Asked about this, Kris, who was wearing a yellow face mask, answered, “I actually thought today is the 24th, tomorrow pa yung 25. He was the one who told me. Sabi

niya [last night], ‘Ano ka ba, bukas yung…’ So, sabi ko, ‘Perfect!’ Talagang perfect coming out.”

She also apologized for coming in late, “They had trouble waking me up because I started a new medicine last night.”

GMA Integrated News reporter Aubrey Carampel asked Kris about her health condition.

She briefly answered, “I’m not so okay. Nahihilo ako.”

The short interview ended with Kris and Michael posing for a photo opportunity with the media.

Based on her last health update, Kris mentioned that she needed to remain in isolation, especially after her immunity seemed to be getting worse.

Despite feeling hopeless sometimes, the TV host-actress said she continues to encourage herself to endure what she has been going through because of the love and support that she receives from the people around her.

Philippines curling team wins gold at Asian Winter Games

The Philippine men’s curling team made history on February 14, 2025, by winning the gold medal at the Asian Winter Games, defeating South Korea 5-3 in the final. This victory marks the Philippines’ firstever medal at the Asian Winter Games and the first gold medal for a Southeast Asian nation in a winter sport.

Road to the gold

Before clinching the gold, the Filipino curling squad secured a crucial 7-6 win over China in the semifinals. This achievement is particularly significant as it marks the country’s first-ever medal in the 39-year history of the Asian Winter Games, held this year in Harbin, China.

National pride and celebration

The Philippine Olympic Committee quickly celebrated the historic win with an Instagram post:

“This is the first-ever medal for the Philippines at the Asian Winter Games, and the highest achievement for a Southeast Asian athlete in the Games’ history! What an incredible accomplishment! You’ve made the entire country so proud!”

Looking ahead: Global competitions and Olympic aspirations

The team is set to compete in the Pan-Continental Curling Championships Division A in November, aiming for a World Cup berth. Additionally, they are entered in two prequalifying tournaments in October and December as they pursue a spot in the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

The team and its Swiss connection

The men’s curling team is based in Switzerland and led by skip Marc Angelo Pfister, who previously represented Switzerland in three world championships before switching to play for the Philippines. His brother, Enrico Gabriel Pfister, along with teammates Christian Patrick Haller and Alan Beat Frei, were all born in Switzerland but are eligible to represent the Philippines through their Filipino mothers. The team trains in Bern, Switzerland.

Recognition from the Philippine Sports Commission

Philippine Sports Commission Chair Richard Bachmann praised the team’s milestone victory:

“The historic victory of the country in men’s curling marks a significant milestone in the growing

dynamics of Philippine sports.

Our remarkable performance at the Asian Winter Games lays the foundation for the greater challenge of achieving Winter Olympic and world-level success in the years to come.”

Standing among the best in Asia

The Philippines’ gold medal win places the team in a shared fifth spot overall with Uzbekistan, which also secured its lone gold in figure skating. As of the latest tally, the top-ranking nations at the Asian Winter Games are:

1. China – 32 gold, 27 silver, 26 bronze

2. South Korea – 16 gold, 15 silver, 14 bronze

3. Japan – 10 gold, 12 silver, 15 bronze

4. Kazakhstan – 4 gold, 9 silver, 7 bronze

5. Philippines & Uzbekistan – 1 gold each

Trailing behind are North Korea (0-1-0), Chinese Taipei (0-0-1), and Thailand (0-0-1).

A new era for Philippine winter sports

The Philippines’ curling team has broken new ground for the country in winter sports. Their success not only inspires Filipino athletes to explore non-traditional sports but also puts the nation on the map in international winter competitions. With the Winter Olympics on the horizon, the journey for Curling Pilipinas has only just begun.

A Night of Inspiration FMC-EGM 30 by 30 Women In Engineering Initiative

The 30 by 30 Women in Engineering Initiative, organized by the Filipino Members Chapter –Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba, held Friday, February 21, 2025, at Mar’s Sisig Restaurant was a resounding success! The event drew the largest number of attendees to date since the FMC started this initiative in 2022, highlighting the growing interest and commitment to promoting women in engineering in the Filipino Community.

The program started with FMC Chairman Joan Santos warmly welcoming the guests and introducing the executive

committee. This was followed by Chairman Rey Robillos who recognized each attendee with their names and respective designations.

What exactly is the 30 by 30 initiative? Host and event organizer

Jeanette Perez explained that the program is a national effort that aims to increase the percentage of newly licensed female engineers to 30 per cent by the year 2030.

This bold goal seeks to address the gender disparity in the engineering industry and encourage more women to pursue careers in this traditionally male-dominated field. Thirty per cent is universally held as the “tipping point” for sustainable change. In fact, the 30

by 30 initiative is not unique to Engineers Canada. There are also other 30 by 30 initiatives – one is by the government, which is to designate 30 per cent of earth’s land and ocean area as protected areas by 2030 and another is the 30 by 30 initiative by law enforcement, which is to increase women law enforcers by 30 per cent by the year 2030. Nevertheless, to reach this goal requires collective effort.

Attendees were treated to a delicious dinner, which served as the backdrop for networking and engaging conversations. The night turned particularly motivating with Stories of How We Got Here, shared by Ms. Ethel Fernandez and

Ms. Jeanette Perez. Their personal journeys into the engineering profession resonated deeply with many in attendance, offering hope and encouragement to aspiring engineers.

The event also featured lively games designed to foster connections among the participants. Attendees were tasked to answer four simple questions to identify their role as an agent of positive change to the engineering profession. Through their answers they determined if they were either a connector, a maven, or a salesperson. The game created an atmosphere of fun. There was also a “guess who” game that

allowed the participants to learn some interesting facts about other participants while winning gift cards in the process. The unique games sparked a lot of laughter and brought camaraderie among the participants.

As the night drew to a close, there was a flurry of activity with photos being taken and souvenirs being handed out, providing attendees with memorable keepsakes from an impactful evening. The gathering not only succeeded in advancing the cause of women in engineering but also built a strong community committed to supporting one another in their professional journeys.

Samahan Maples Boys championship

Maynard Pangan scored a threepointer for Team Admin. A shot that added to their leading position in the first half of Samahan Maples Boys season eight championship game on Sunday, February 16 at West Kildonan Collegiate.

“It was such a comeback.

From seventh to winning the championships. We are the underdogs,” Pangan proudly said,

before he was declared the game’s

Most Valuable Player. Pangan, the team’s point guard, held on during the first half, which helped his teammates to rack up points. The game ended with a huge scoring gap between the teams. The score was 70-58 against Team Chief JP.

“Well-deserved for Maynard. He truly helped set up the team for success,” Chris Admin, the team’s coach, said as he looked over to the players taking photos with their

medals and trophy.

It was the end of SMB’s eighth season. What started out as a simple liga of the Filipino Community around the Maples area back in 2011 became a league of its own with now 200 members. Their games used to be outdoors, now they gather and play indoors according to Eugene Dela Cruz, one of the SMB co-founders.

SMB is also where fellow Filipinos can get together every Sunday with their shared interest

in basketball. It is a form of brotherhood and culture, he added.

During the battle for the third place, Edwin Santiago, a point guard, accumulated a total of 23 points for Team Bise Arnel. They won 70-52 against Team Mr. MVP Albert.

Team Bise Arnel was supposed to play in the championships, but they lost in the semi-finals.

“I couldn’t sleep for a week after that,” Santiago said. He still pushed through and fought to the

last point to secure their team in the third. Santiago’s background of being a hip-hop dancer was an advantage for his footwork as a basketball player, he shared.

“More to come,” Arnel Gordovez, the team coach said. He is also proud despite not making it to the finals.

The next season will start on March 2nd.
