NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2018

The Anchor Do More. Care More. Be More.

Happy Holidays, Anchors! The holidays are upon us and there are plenty of exciting things going on with Anchor besides our Holiday Spirit! This issue will focus on two very important fundraising opportunities as well as

announcing new Clubs and Anchor Service Projects. Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) Fundraising

U.N. International Youth Day New Anchor Clubs Anchor Club Projects Leadership Opportunity Reminders

Brain Injury Association of America Help us raise funds for caregiver scholarships! Anchor Club members are challenged to collectively raise $5,000

to help fund training for caregivers of brain injury survivors. The

finish line for reaching our goal is April 30, 2019.

Family caregivers and direct care staff facing the challenges

of caring for an individual (or individuals) with brain injuries may

apply for a scholarship of up to $250 to obtain the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists’ Brain Injury Fundamentals Certificate.

Anchors everywhere are encouraged to rally around this

profound cause! The Anchor Club achieving the highest dollar

total per member will be honored at the 2019 Convention with the President’s Anchor Club Exemplar Award, and one waived 2019 Anchor Summit Registration fee.

The $5,000 raised by Anchors will fund training tuition for

individuals who care for brain injury survivors. Individuals with brain injury have unique needs and challenges and require unique support. This supports a program offered by the Brain Injury

Association of America called “Fundamentals.” It covers brain injury and behavior, medical complications, guidelines for

interacting and building rapport, safe medication management, and how to support families and friends and more. The $5,000 raised will provide scholarships to 20

caregivers for the certificate program!

What are ways your Anchor Club can raise funds for this scholarship initiative? Here are a few ideas…

 Look into crowdfunding and ask friends and family members for donations

 Sponsor a “dress down” day at your school, where for $1 to

this cause, each student can wear jeans/hats sunglasses, etc.

 The ‘tried and true’ events...host a car wash, bake sale, or even a dog wash

 $1 donation to have your car decorated for Valentine’s Day  Create and sell candy bouquets for upcoming holidays/events

 Host babysitting Saturdays in December so parents can shop The possibilities are endless! Help raise the money for an incredible cause and earn scholarship money at the same time!

Pilot International has a partnership with BIAA to create awareness of brain related injuries and safely. Please visit their website for valuable information as well as the link for BrainMindersTM on our website. www.biausa.org www.pilotinternational.org/brainminders/

August 12, 2019 Plan now to participate in International Youth Day! The United Nations' (UN) International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12 each year to recognize efforts of the world's youth in enhancing global society. It also aims to promote ways to engage youth in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities. Each year has a different theme for International Youth Day. As this is announced and more information is available, it will be shared with all Anchor Clubs. Keep on the lookout for information on this incredible event that is all about youth! http://www.un.org/en/events/youthday/index.shtml “The hopes of the world rest on young people. Peace, economic dynamism, social justice, tolerance — all this and more, today and tomorrow, depends on tapping into the power of youth.” — UN Secretary-General António Guterres

Anchors in Action! Anchor Clubs are already out there doing what we do best‌ serving others. Check out the service projects these clubs have participated in that positively impact their communities. Be sure to send in your write-ups and photos so everyone can see the good you are doing as Anchors! Do more. Care more. Be more. The Athens Anchor Club prepared and delivered cookies to the Senior Citizen Center for the Holidays. They also partnered with sponsoring Pilots to raise over $900 towards brain disease.

Anchors in Action! Judson Middle School and Longview High School Anchor Clubs in Texas had a busy October! The Clubs provided assistance in the Walk to End Alzhermer’s. They have been baseball buddies for Miracle League of East Texas Adaptive Baseball, collected peanut butter for the local food bank and performed BrainMinderŠ puppet shows at the Longview Community Ministries Touch-aTruck event. In addition, they have adopted a local bus stop and picked up trash and cleaned it for passengers. To round out the month, they made Halloween goody bags for the life skills classes and deaf students. Way to go Anchors!!
