How To Succeed In Business – Hire A Vet Veterans bring skill and work ethic to civilian workplace

The phone rings almost every day. “The callers want to know, how do we hire your veterans?� says Dr. Bruce Brunson, executive director of the Center for Military and Veterans Education at Tidewater Community College. “If you have veterans, you’ll attract companies, so it’s great for economic development,� he says. Local municipalities are well aware of the fact that veterans are a valuable asset to the region, says Brunson. “I’m on several committees – we all know it’s a huge plus to retain veterans for the type and quality of workforce they provide.� How did veterans make it onto employers’ most wanted lists? Allow Brunson to count the ways. “They already have a work ethic and reliability instilled in them and employers are looking for that,� Brunson says. “Veterans are used to being held accountable and they have leadership skills. They’re adaptable;

they have to be since they change commands every two or so years. And they’re used to getting along with different types of people from all over the country.� As for focus – “You tell them here’s the mission, here’s what we’re doing, and they go do it,� Brunson says, no hand-holding required. Brunson points to recent statistics from Army OneSource surveys that determined a high percentage of employers believe veterans have a strong sense of responsibility (97%), will see a task through to completion (96%), can work as a member of a team (94%), have the ability to work under pressure (94%) and have a high degree of professionalism (93%). Terry Bond, a recruitment specialist with Sentara Healthcare, agrees with that assessment. “When we hire veterans, they bring a lot of skills and experience to the mix,� he says. “It’s the can-do spirit, the resourcefulness, the willingness to pitch in and do

what’s got to be done that tips the balance in their favor. “Our problem is that separating military don’t often think of healthcare as an opportunity unless you’re a doctor or nurse, but it takes as much to run a hospital as it does to run a ship,� says Bond. “I keep beating the drum, think of healthcare.� When veterans do come to work for Sentara, Bond says they fit right in with Sentara’s culture of investing in the community. “These folks know how to volunteer; it gives us that local extension.� So why hire a vet? “I’ll tell you about one company here that hired a veteran who in turn hired more veterans,� says Brunson. “The company’s absentee rate and problems were drastically reduced, along with turnover.� So the company did the only sensible thing – they hired more vets. “They’re almost 80 percent veterans now,� says Brunson. “Vets are a great return on investment.�

While veterans call all 50 states home, California, Texas and Florida attract the largest numbers – they rank 1st, 2nd and 3rd in veteran population and are the only states with over a million vets. Virginia ranks 7th with almost 900,000 veterans.

Virginia comes in 4th for putting the largest numbers of vets to work – over half a million veterans draw a paycheck in the Old Dominion. The state claims first place honors for the number of veteran-owned small businesses (1000+) and percentage of veterans in full-time employment (87.2%).

Nationwide, almost 27% of veterans 25 years or older have earned bachelor’s degrees or higher.

The U.S. annual median income of vets in 2013 was $36,381, compared with $25,820 for nonveterans.

Gone are the U.S. veterans of WWI, once over 4 million strong; the last known American survivor of the war to end all wars passed away in 2011. The number of living WWII vets has dwindled from over 16 million to under a million, most of them now in their 90s. Living Korean vets? Less than 2 million. Even the youngest Viet Nam veterans are bumping senior status. “We’re losing generations of heroes, their stories, the things they accomplished,� says Commander Sara Pickett, an RN with the U.S. Navy. When she trained hospital corpsmen at the Naval Hospital Corps School, Pickett was determined to instill in her young charges an awareness of the sacrifices of those who had served before them. “They did things we’ve never done, with equipment we’ll never have to try and work with, they’ve experienced things we never will,� says Pickett. As she sent her corpsmen off to assignments in VA hospitals, Pickett wanted them to offer excellent care – “But I also wanted them to remember where these vets came from, to listen to their stories, to honor them,� she says. Commander Anne Brown, also an RN with the U.S. Navy, says she takes the opportunity to talk with aging veterans every chance she gets. “The number of WWII vets is just plummeting, so if I see one in the pharmacy with their Pearl Harbor or Iwo Jima hat on, I sit down and talk to them,� she says. “And I encourage the young corpsmen to sit down and talk with them too.�

Sometimes the initial response from her corpsmen is less than enthusiastic – until they actually try it, Brown says. “Once they start talking to these retirees, it gives them the feeling of carrying on a tradition, of being a part of a bigger picture and they understand the impact they have.� Pickett used to read her corpsmen a letter written by an Air Force captain who was walking toward the entrance of the medical facility at Ft. Belvoir one day just as a colonel approached. A few feet in front of the colonel shuffled an elderly veteran in his 80s. As the captain aimed a salute at the colonel, greeting him with a cheery ‘Good morning, sir,’ the aging veteran visibly straightened and returned her salute with pride. The obvious delight he took in that salute meant for another, in the feeling of being recognized and honored, prompted the captain to look anew at those who had gone before her; in fact, she started a campaign in his honor – Salute a Veteran. We lose our heroes every day. Some are young warriors on active duty, but others are middleaged retirees taken by cancer or senior veterans who succumb to simple old age. Their lives are separated by generations, but all of them at some point said yes to duties that stretch and test, yes to ridiculous hours, yes to risk, demands, sacrifice. So on Veterans Day or a Friday or a Monday, in March or September or May, there’s never a wrong time to honor a vet whose legacy is nothing less than a country that remains strong and whole.

You’re a Grand Old Flag:

The P’s & Q’s of Flag Etiquette Before 1923, the United States had no formal guidelines for displaying our flag. That year a commission formed by the American Legion developed the National Flag Code, which, with few modifications, would be formally signed into law during WWII. Notable additions to the code include the Freedom to Display the American Flag Act of 2005, which allows homeowners to display an American flag on their property without prohibitions from real estate management organizations such as homeowners associations or condo boards, and a 2009 law that allows active duty military not in uniform and veterans to salute the flag during the national anthem. Some of the dos and don’ts of flag display: • Flags are raised quickly and lowered slowly. • Never allow the flag to touch the ground. • If the American flag is flown on the same pole as other flags, it commands the highest position. • Flags flown at night must be illuminated. • If the flag is to be flown at half-staff, first raise it fully before lowering it into position; before you take the flag down at the end of the day, again raise it fully to the top of the staff before lowering. • Displaying the flag behind a speaker? Place it to the speaker’s right, the audience’s left. • If carried during a parade with other flags, the American flag is positioned to the right, or is centered in front.
