THE BANQUET

T

HE VIRGINIAN-PILOT saluted the top high school athletes in South Hampton Roads during the 2016-17 school year at the second annual All-Tidewater and Athletes of the Year Showcase banquet June 29. Norfolk Academy’s Taylor Acra, who excelled in soccer, lacrosse and basketball, was Male Athlete of the Year. Nansemond River’s Syaira Richardson, who set three state records in track, was Female Athlete of the Year. And Darnell Dozier, who led Princess Anne girls basketball to a fourth straight state title, was Coach of the Year. Karen Barefoot, the former Old Dominion women’s basketball coach now at UNC Wilmington, was the keynote speaker before more than 300 high school athletes and their families, coaches and administrators. This special section recognizes those athletes who were named first-team AllTidewater or were individual state champions during 2016-17.
