Dan McIsaac tests the remote-operated eFoil as he researches new ways to expand Nor’Banks’ offerings. COURTESY OF NOR’BANKS SAILING & WATERSPORTS

A day in the life of a

watersports captain

By Maddie Lutz

Correspondent

Editor’s note: Welcome to “Coast’s Day in the Life” series. For the month of August, we’ll be highlighting a few industry professionals that supply the in-demand goods and services that make the Outer Banks tick. Stay tuned as watersports captains, musicians, charter fishermen and more share a behind-the-scenes look at a day on the job. Ever wonder what it’s like to run a watersports venture? As customers, we get to experience the thrills of parasailing, Jet Skiing, paddleboarding, tubing, sailing and more. But what is it like to actually plan

and operate all of the adventures, teach techniques to new customers or boost the confidence of anxious participants? For Dan McIsaac, owner of Nor’Banks Sailing and Watersports in Duck, the best parts of the job are sparking people’s love for having fun in the water and knowing that no two days on the job are ever the same. While the Nor’banks Sailing Center has been around since 1979 (making it the second oldest business in Duck after Wee Winks Market and Deli), Nor’Banks Sailing and Watersports as we know it has only been around since 2017. Then, the small company had only 11 positions, but it now Turn to Page 10

employs more than 40 people. In the past year, its retail store, with everything from surfboards to swimsuits, has doubled in size. Prior to the business offering its array of activities that range from paddleboards to pontoon boats, Nor’Banks focused on sailing and parasailing. McIsaac initially worked as an instructor at Nor’Banks Sailing Center and eventually became a manager. On the side, he ran his own trips for wakeboarding and tubing excursions. Fast forward to 2017, and McIsaac became the owner of the sailing center. This let him bring the wakeboarding, tubing, parasailing and sailing all under the Nor’Banks brand and additionally merge with the other pontoon boat and Jet Ski companies next door. These days, he spends less time on the water and more behind the scenes performing managerial tasks. However, he always makes time in his day to interact with the incredible customers that fuel his passion to provide the public with a perfect day on the water. The most important aspect of running a watersports company is to note that there is no such thing as a “typical” day. While some professions run on a predictable, planned-out schedule, fickle weather and an ever-changing timetable don’t allow for rigid, long-term scheduling in this line of work. A watersports instructor’s or captain’s day may include showing guests all the ways to play on the water or hours and hours of paperwork, with everything from scheduling to taxes. On the contrary, inclement weather may result in shutting down all equipment and bringing the day to a close at 11 a.m. You really never know! You can find McIsaac doing anything and everything from power washing the sidewalks to renovating the retail display. When he surveys the premises, he “(sees) nothing but a to-do list.” He adores the dynamic demands of working in watersports. Every day offers something new and different, and both he and his employees have the opportunity to dabble in all areas of business. No day is average, no day is boring. This is especially exciting for the company’s younger employees, who receive the opportunity to learn about all of the aspects of the business and develop their skills both recreationally and abstractly. Some of these younger workers (some only 14 years old) go on to become captains and build careers off of the skills they learn. Others diverge from the field, going on to become doctors, lawyers and engineers after learning the importance of hard work and dedication. Most return annually to rekindle their zeal for life on the water. McIsaac is happy to provide employment for some of the Outer Banks’ youngest workers and guide them along in developing their interests, aptitudes and, of course, their ability to sail. The business is growing, and it’s growing

fast. Thus, new positions arise frequently, and employees are thankful to work at a place that provides opportunities to develop their interests. Likewise, McIsaac is thankful for the helping hands. These days, he sees himself more as an “extra person” that exists off the schedule. He can be found throughout the day shuttling back and forth between the pontoon boats and the office, maintaining everything from customer service to emails. He’s willing and ready to step into whatever role is required that day. As for when the workday comes to a close, there’s never a certain time. McIsaac laughs, “As a business owner, your workday never really ends.” Most days, there’s sunset pontoons and last minute scheduling adjustments to make. He admits that when he first became a business owner, he had a difficult time “shutting it off” and heading home for the night. After several years of

While some professions run on a predictable, planned-out schedule, fickle weather and an ever-changing timetable don’t allow for rigid, long-term scheduling in this line of work. ownership, he now has the support from his staff to usually call it a day around 6:30-7 p.m. The development of the business’ upstairs neighbor, The Village Table and Tavern, provides the Nor’Banks crew a relaxing space to hang out and unwind at the end of the day, complete with live music, dinner and a place to soak in the incredible view of the Currituck Sound.

McIsaac has nothing but good things to say about his neighbors upstairs, saying their positive relationship makes his job even more pleasant to wake up to every day. With Nor’Banks a fully functional and stable enterprise today, McIsaac has the security to spend time thinking of ways to develop the business. He enjoys coming up with innovative solutions to problems, creating new services and expanding upon what he has already built. A lighter work day allows him time to organize fun staff events or set up an impromptu photoshoot. His varied day-today activities supplement a love for the job and keep repetition at bay. The only thing that a watersports instructor’s or captain’s day guarantees is that no matter the day’s events, the work will be rewarded with the smiles and compliments of clients who come from both near and far to experience their services and nurture their own love for the water.

Eat on the beach Takeout that goes beyond burgers and beach fries By Maddie Lutz | Correspondent

No one wants to waste a beautiful beach day waiting to get seats at a restaurant or standing in line at the grocery store. Luckily, the Outer Banks is blessed with many different options when it comes to takeout food, especially ones that go beyond the standard fried or “fast food.” You can still experience the Outer Banks’ dining scene without taking hours out of your busy day. The locally owned businesses range from fast and fresh juice bars to seafood shacks and deli counters. They make it easy to get the flavors you crave without all the hassle.

Coastal Cravings, 1209 Duck Road, Duck

This local hot spot is open for all three meals of the day but is best known for their breakfast and lunch. Cravings specializes in dishes like Huevos Rancheros, Coconut Crusted Shrimp and quite a few sandwich basket options. Whatever you choose to order, add on a side of hushpuppies - you won’t regret it! Advertised as a “quick-service restaurant,” Coastal Cravings is the only drive-thru in Duck, making it the perfect restaurant for people on the go. In addition to the sizable variety of menu options, Cravings set itself apart from the rest when it was featured by Guy Fieri on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” several years ago.

Eventide, 1190 Duck Road, Duck Hit the beach with unfussy sustenance or hit it with a sophisticated spread — this elegant bistro enables both. Specializing in cheese and charcuterie boards, fine wines and craft beer, you can get one of their boards boxed up to go along with a regional beer or crisp sauvignon blanc to pour oceanside. They make a mean sandwich, too, such as the Blue-LT (house-made blue

cheese spread with prosciutto, lettuce and tomato), or try the Hummus and Feta Salad for cooling veggies loaded with protein. Children get a kick out of the kid-friendly cheeseboards and the gooey grilled cheese sandwiches. You can order ahead online (www. eventideduck.com) or place your order there and hangout on their waterfront deck while you wait.

The Outer Bean Cafe, 3701 N. Croatan Highway, Kitty Hawk The Outer Bean is a hidden gem in Kitty Hawk with plenty of healthy, plant-based options. Their menu ranges from salads, paninis, smoothies, juices and more, and many dishes include a touch of Mediterranean flare. They also offer a variety of protein smoothies, such as the Healing (avocado, celery, ginger, banana, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, hemp protein and almond milk), that are perfect as a pre or post-workout boost. Fresh-pressed juices, specifically the Beet Dream and Mean Green, are sure to kick any cold out the door. Lastly, much of the menu is vegetarian or vegan, ensuring a healthy and environmentally friendly start to your day. Turn to Page 16

Back Porch Lunch Box is convenient for takeout and also caters for larger groups if you call ahead. COURTESY from Page 14

PokeBox, 2236 S. Croatan Highway, Nags Head

Opened in 2020 by the folks behind Taiko Japanese Restaurant, PokeBox is quickly becoming a local favorite, and it’s clear why. This counter-service poke joint uses the freshest of ingredients to let customers build and customize their own poke bowl from a variety of options. First, you pick a base (white rice, brown rice, spring mix, chips). Then, you choose your protein(s) (sashimi-style tuna, salmon, steak, tofu, etc.). Next, add your mix-ins from a list of veggies, fruits and herbs. Lastly, pile on your sauces and toppings. The PokeBox is not to be missed as a new kid on the block for the Outer Banks’ takeout options.

Reflections of home

Windy Island Designs owners create sculptures from wood By Mary Ellen Riddle Correspondent

Windy Island Designs is as much about creating arresting wooden sculptures as it is about the relationship that powers it. Tom and Keven Ericksens’ relationship rests at the heart of this business. Married 46 years, the Ericksens fit together like pieces in the wooden art they create. They each contribute their best self to the process and the results are a partnership as finely honed and colorful as their artwork. The two windsurfers share a love of the water and welcome its influences on their work. The wood sculptures they cut, carve and finish are formed into colorful images that reflect their island home, from turtles and fish to shells. “All of this is an extension of our voice and mind,” Tom says. “That’s what art is.” Their shared experiences and deep camaraderie make them work well together, despite their outwardly contrasting personalities. His speech is layered and zestful, peppered with quick thoughts moving in many directions. Her succinct dialogue takes a more linear approach to conversation. Together their balance creates a harmonic hum in their workshop, a space filled with the tools of the trade and the scent of freshly cut wood. The physical process for their sculptures starts with Tom stacking layers of skateboard veneers — greens, blues, reds, pink, yellow and blues — gluing them together and carving into them to reveal the underlying colors and form a design. “Music comes to me in colors when I am cutting this stuff,” Tom says. “I crank up the AC/DC and Rolling Stones, and I’m seeing it and hearing it and tasting it. I have to put my whole body into it.” From there, Keven takes over, finishing the piece by smoothing out fuzzy edges and carving to refine the work. The wood is covered with a water-soluble polyacrylic coat that makes the colors pop. “I’m also the organizer, which came from my previous position.” Keven says. She’s referring to her position working as a nursing manager before she retired and dove into art. Now, her organization includes scheduling the various opportunities to show their work at shows on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands. Tom also spent a career working in the medical field as a critical care cardiology nurse. Caring

and human contact are important to the couple. Art contributes to that need. Creating has always also been a part of the duos’ lives. “I sold my first pen and ink (drawing) when I was 10 years old to a family friend for 25 cents,” Tom says. “So, I consider myself a lifer.” Keven grew up around music, taught herself to play guitar at 13 and is a writer and currently studying music theory for piano. “I was always drawn to art,” she says. “I drew a lot as a child. But it has been difficult to get there — difficult, fun, challenging, kind of like life. It’s messy, fabulous and interesting.” The art shows they participate in put them in contact with other artists and the public and provide opportunities to give of their creative selves to others. Keven credits her mother for her compassionate side. “I got from her the gift of giving and tenacity,” she says. “It helps in art.” Tom credits his mentors for igniting

his love of wood, the water and creativity. “Dad restored a couple of older boats,” he says. “I worked with him as a child.” He also fondly recalls an art teacher, Mrs. Boutilliere, who inspired him from 3rd to 7th grades. “She would rescue me from the hall with my nose to the wall — she’d grab me and take me to the art room,” he says. She instilled a fearlessness into Tom and helped reveal to him the heart and soul of art. Tom took these lessons from his youth and went on to become a contractor, a master cabinet maker and creator of wooden toys and jewelry before he entered nursing. Their 46 years of shared experiences and a deep respect for each other fuels their complementing creativity. “He gets things out of stuff that you wouldn’t think he’d be able to do,” Keven says about Tom’s innovative approach to art and technology. She also was a sound-

ing board during his woodworking years. Conversely, Tom says Keven’s study of musical theory inspires him. “I bought a ukulele and am trying to learn that,” he says and even crafted other musical instruments — a cigar box guitar and a strum stick. Today they are grateful to be a team in their home workshop and discuss their art at the dinner table. … art and Mrs. Boutilliere. They both embrace what she ignited in Tom: a fearlessness that frees creativity. In the woodshop as the chips fly and merge with ideas, creativity and friendship, the couple builds upon the experiences that led them to be there. “It’s an evolution,” Keven says. “I can’t wait to get up in the morning. Every experience that we’ve had plays into everything we are doing now.” To contact the Ericksens regarding shows, commissions and to see their art, go to windyislanddesigns.com.

CURRITUCK COUNTY Small Business Spotlight

Local Contractor is Wired for Customer Service

Coastal Mechanical & Electrical Services LLC keep the county cool What are the biggest rewards? For me, the biggest reward is seeing the employees advance in their chosen path and the long lasting relationships that they build with our customers. What sets you apart?

John Pugh is the president of Coastal Mechanical & Electrical Services LLC located in Jarvisburg, NC How long have you been in business in Currituck County? Coastal Mechanical and Electrical Services opened in February 2020. Can you describe the business? We’re a full service mechanical (HVAC) and electrical contractor. We offer services ranging from preventative maintenance to equipment replacement to new construction and remodel projects. Talk about the decision to start your own business... After working at another HVAC company for more than 20 years, I realized it was time to move on to another chapter in my career.

“...the biggest reward is seeing the employees advance in their chosen path and the long lasting relationships that they build with our customers”” Why do you do what you do? We want to provide the very best service in our area at a fair price. Why did you choose Currituck? Currituck County was chosen for several reasons. Most importantly, all of our employees and staff live in the county. That helps us to provide fast and reliable service to our neighbors. Are you from Currituck? I have lived in Currituck County since moving to the area in 2000. What are the biggest challenges? One of our biggest challenges at the moment is the hiring of qualified technicians to join our team.

We are blessed to have very experienced and talented technicians and management on staff who will go above and beyond to make certain our customers receive the very best service possible. Further, all employees at Coastal Mechanical and Electrical Services, LLC are drug screened and must undergo a thorough background screening. Cork & Craft brings music, wine tastings, beer samplings and local artisans to the grounds around Whalehead. SCOTT SECHMAN PHOTOS

BEYOND THE MUSIC

Tunes and tastings at Cork & Craft By Scott Sechman

Correspondent

One of the long-lasting weekly events available to visitors and residents of Corolla during the summer months is the weekly Corolla Cork & Craft event. Formerly known as Whalehead Wednesdays, featuring wine and beer tastings, the program happens every week from 3 to 7 p.m. at the historic Whalehead Club. It’s an excellent, relaxing way to augment a visit to the Outer Banks, free from reservations, long waits and traffic. Currituck County’s Department of Travel and Tourism provides an afternoon of live music, fun, food, libations from regional vineyards and breweries, all surrounded by the natural beauty of the island’s northern reaches. I was intrigued about this Whalehead Club I’d heard so much about. I dug a little deeper using the “Google Machine.” What I found was quite intriguing.Apparently, Edward Collings Knight Jr., a Philadelphia railroad

executive, and his hard-drinking wife Marie Louise, (who also had a penchant for using “colorful” language), shared a passion for hunting waterfowl. Given the misogyny of the era, Mrs. Knight wasn’t welcome in the all-male world of hunt clubs. Her husband’s solution was to build a 21,000-square-foot mansion by the sea just for his wife as their winter retreat. Knight bought the former Lighthouse Hunt Club, a property that came with 4.5-miles of land on the Currituck Sound. Their new acquisition included five stories of art nouveau luxury

filled with modern conveniences, such as electricity, running hot and cold water, indoor bathrooms and even a refrigerator (all rarities at that time). With construction completed in 1925, the Knights renamed the property Corolla Island. Today, the Whalehead Club is considered a champion of the nation’s art nouveau ornamentation, with its curved rooflines, vibrant yellow exterior, ornamental chimneys, Tiffany lighting and distinctive porches and friezes. Currituck County purchased the property in 1992 to ensure the

public had access to the Currituck Sound. The county began restoring the property in 1999, and by 2002, the completed restoration was comparable to the home’s peak condition in the 1920s. Corolla Cork and Craft, in the ever-so-lovely and Historic Corolla Village, began over 10 years ago as a wine tasting event in order to raise funding to continue restoring the mansion. It’s since developed into a weekly summer fundraiser that runs between Memorial Day and mid-September. As it evolved, it began to feature both wine and beer from local wineries and breweries and includes indie vendors selling handmade crafts. Besides food trucks, beverages and live acoustic music, what else can visitors expect? Well, you can expect a beautiful sunset over the Currituck Sound, for starters. The open space of Historic Corolla Park allows you to enjoy a family picnic, as you can also find food vendors selling charcuterie-style refreshments to complement your wine and beer tastings. Pop-up shops from local

businesses rotate through the weekly events, so don’t miss the chance to browse the artisan products. Bottles of wine from regional vineyards and cases of beer are also available for purchase. And if my eyes did not deceive me during my visit, they also have cornhole setups! As for any kids in tow, lawn games are set up throughout the venue. Event organizers also encourage bringing fishing poles and crabbing nets, given the close access to the sound. There’s a plethora of wildlife in the boat basin, and crabbing is always a family favorite. If you don’t know how, this is a great place to learn. And on occasion, there are times when a real live Corolla mustang will be there for visitors to get an up-close and personal look at these amazing animals. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at this pet-friendly event as long as they’re on leashes. This week’s Corolla Cork and Craft on Wednesday, August 11, brings tunes from Mercy Creek to the stage.
