Cavalier Shores, Virginia Beach

Ghent, Norfolk

This small Northend beach community is comprised of about 110 homes, between 42nd and 45th Streets on both the land and ocean sides of Atlantic Avenue. The well-kept neighborhood is a mix of cozy beach cottages and bungalows, including some dating back to 1927 when the area was developed in conjunction with the Cavalier Hotel. Today, the charming neighborhood has gained notoriety for its grand illumination during the Christmas season. Cars filled with gazers drive by, and if you’re lucky enough to find on-street parking, you can stroll by the uniquely-lit homes and through an enchanted archway lights along a historic brick path that runs north and south between some of the homes.

Named for the Treaty of Ghent in 1814, the neighborhood was created around the turn of the century. Most of the buildings date back to the era between 1890 and 1920 and still retain the wonderful charm of their time, from single-family homes, townhouses, condos and apartments, to commercial buildings. Swanky shops, unique eateries and coffee shops are within walking distance for many residents — a diverse group that includes urban professionals. In 2001 North Ghent, the area between Olney and Princess Anne Roads, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Chrysler Museum, Harrison Opera House, Naro Expanded movie theater, the U.S.S. Wisconsin, Nauticus, Harbor Park, and Town Point Park are located nearby. The active Ghent Neighborhood League advocates for the conservation and promotion of the historic character of the area has an informative community website, www.ghentva.org.

Freemason area of Norfolk Some of the homes in Norfolk’s Freemason historic district were built as far back as the 1790s. Most of them, however, were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many were turned into rooming or boarding houses for defense-related workers and the military during World War I. The neighborhood in 1971 was listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register, and on the National Register for Historic Places the following year. In recent years, the area has seen an influx of residents to townhomes, condominium developments, some of which were built on land formerly housing piers, a molasses tank, cold storage units, and warehouses.

ViBe Creative Chic’s Beach, Alanton, Towne Place District, Virginia Beach Virginia Beach at Greenbrier, Virginia Beach The beach spot on the Chesapeake One of the oldest Two years ago a group of artists, restaurants and businesses joined forces to create this new arts district six blocks from the ocean. The revitalized area has been transformed into a vibrant center for the arts, culture, technology, and an array of environmentallyfriendly restaurants, and creative industries. For information on the area, including special events, visit www. thevibedistrict.com and www.firstfridayvibe.com. The Old Beach Farmers Market takes place Saturdays from 8 a.m. — noon at Croc’s 19th Street Bistro. www.oldbeach farmersmarket.com

Chesapeake Bay, east of Little Creek Amphibious Base, has a laid -back and close-knit feel. Established in 1919, it is officially named Chesapeake Beach, but most folks refer to it as Chic’s Beach. The community is located away from the touristfilled beaches. Small shops and restaurants are within walking distance, including Commonwealth Brewing Company, which opened a tasting room last year. The Chic’s Beach Festival recently kicked off the summer with live music and food trucks at HK on the Bay restaurant. The initials CXB seem to have caught on. Quite an extensive merchandise selection is offered for sale on the civic league’s website, www. cxbcivicleague.org.

neighborhoods at the beach, located in the Great Neck corridor, Alanton has throwback charisma. Most of the homes date back to the 1960s and many of them have been renovated and updated by young families. Some of the streets are named for those who played a role in the area’s development. In fact the neighborhood’s name comes from the Alan McCullough, a child of the family that developed the area in the 1920s. Today, the neighborhood of small ranch fixer-uppers and large mansions on the water has a low turnover rate. The Alanton-Baycliff Recreation Center pool is a popular congregation spot for families during the summer.

The shopping area off Eden Way North in the heart of Greenbrier known as Towne Place is in the midst of a resurgence in popularity, with an attractive mix of shops and restaurants, including Taste Unlimited, Jos. A. Bank, Chico’s, Natural Elements Spa & Salon, and more. Bring your own chairs and blankets to the popular free 2016 Summer Concert Series, which is back in action every other Thursday evening in the field near the gazebo area of the shopping center. Currently under construction nearby is Towne Place Shops, which will include Brixx Wood Fired Pizza, Zoes Kitchen, a Starbucks, and more at towneplacegreenbrier. com and on Facebook.

The Riverfront at Harbour View, Suffolk The Riverfront at Harbour View in north Suffolk has been named “Best Community” three times by the Tidewater Builders Association. The 700acre property is home to an 18-hole waterfront golf course and 43acre lake with plenty of walking and jogging paths. Residents enjoy a resort-style of living, with a mix of about 1,300 single and multi-family homes and condos. The neighborhood offers a wealth of year-round activities for all ages, including summer camp for kids. The active Riverfront swim club, with a competitive swim team, features a junior Olympic-size swimming pool and 100-foot water slide. The community’s clubhouse has indoor and outdoor fireplaces, a large plasma screen, and gazebo Cabana bar. Playgrounds, tennis and volleyball courts, two waterfront parks with piers and gazebos, and plenty of bike trails add to the area’s attractiveness.

HRSD’s 800 environmentally focused employees come from many backgrounds, but they share one vision: Future generations will inherit clean waterways and be able to keep them clean.

Buff’s Garden is a public walkway that takes you to a wide part of the beach at 47th Street. Parking is limited and there are no lifeguards or public restrooms, but the experience is worthwhile. The memorial flower garden features stones with engraved remembrances for those who died from cancer. Pets are allowed before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.

Croatan Beach, Virginia Beach Vanderbilt Ave. at the Oceanfront, Virginia Beach It’s likely you’ll find more locals than tourists on this beach, tucked away at the south end of the Croatan neighborhood. But with more than 500 spaces available, parking should not be a problem. Parking costs: Virginia Beach residents $3 per day, $5 for non-residents. Surfing is prohibited within 30 feet of the shoreline; surfing in certain areas may be restricted during some parts of the day. Pets are allowed before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.

PEBBLE BEACH’S NO. 18. St. Andrews’ No. 17. TPC Sawgrass’ No. 17. If you know a little about professional golf, you probably recognize these holes. They’re considered among the best in the sport. And as a result of their brutality and beauty, they’ve become as iconic as some of the players. But what about here? Surely with all of the courses in our area there are some holes worthy of remembering. It took a little while, but we scoured the region to find the ones that challenge and entertain. So here, in our opinion, are the nine best public golf holes in Hampton Roads.

The courses BIDE-A-WEE GOLF COURSE Portsmouth, 757-3938600, www.portsvagolf.com.

Bide-A-Wee Golf Course, Portsmouth, No. 8, Par 4 Golfers have a couple options attacking the green on this one, but each comes with an accompanying risk. From a raised tee on this Curtis Strange-signature course, you stare down a 447-yard (from the tips) dogleg left that encourages you to cut the corner. Thing is, your second shot will be to an uphill green with a water carry and a large hungry bunker guarding it. Go the safer route to the right and you flirt with running out of fairway.

Lambert’s Point Golf Course, Norfolk, No. 8, Par 3 Simple-looking holes can bedevil as easily as intimidating ones. This uphill hole plays anywhere from 100 yards to about 130, depending on pin placement. The hill to the right provides safety to tee shots that spray in that direction, but go left and go fish: The Elizabeth River awaits you. You’ll find this hole quite manageable if you don’t try to out-muscle it.

Signature at West Neck, Virginia Beach, No. 17, Par 5 This slight dogleg left plays 562 yards from the tips. Its bowl-shaped fairway rewards solid tee shots. But don’t block it or overcook it, because bunkers bracket the

fairway right about where the average golfer would land. Invisible from the tee is a lake on the left, which comes into play on approach. The green is small and guarded in front by three bunkers. If you’re long and left, get out the scuba gear.

Heron Ridge Golf Club, Virginia Beach, No. 7, Par 4 Designer Fred Couples probably intended for you to hug the right side of this dogleg left, which leaves a mid- to long-iron shot to the small undulating green, measuring 26 yards from front to back. Go left off the tee and you’re wet. Don’t come up short on your approach or you’ll find yourself in a little creek that slithers in front of the green. Waste areas guard the left and right side of the green and a small bunker preys on shots that miss the mark short and right. If you get a par, my advice: grab your ball and run, because you stole something.

Nansemond River Golf Club, Suffolk, No. 17, Par 4 This hole is probably one of the prettiest in Hampton Roads, so prepare to be dazzled after your blind tee shot. I suggest you leave your driver in your bag on this one and set up with a fairway wood. Keep it down the right side and with a little roll you should have a wedge shot to the flag. The real kicker is the island green. Don’t let it get in your head and you could be staring at a birdie putt.

Riverfront Golf Club, Suffolk, No. 13, Par 3 This 180-yard forced-carry hole has plenty of trouble, but with an accurate approach it will reward you with a birdie chance. You can bail out on the right, but anything left is trouble. Waste areas are in front of you from the tee, as well as left of the four bunkers that guard the narrow two-tiered green. An accurate long-iron shot is a must here. Don’t be left or you’re staring at bogey, or worse.

Cypress Point Country Club, Virginia Beach, No. 7, Par 4 This dogleg right rewards long drives that cut the corner. If you’re short and right you’ll find yourself in some crippling kitty litter. Speaking of which, long and left will put you in another one. Trees and houses to the left and trees on the right pave the way to your second shot, which is likely a mid- to long-iron to a large, undulating, uphill green, guarded on the left and right by a couple of large bunkers. Four is a good score. Five ain’t bad.

Cahoon Plantation Golf Club, Chesapeake, No. 18, Par 5 This delayed dogleg left provides a beautiful view of the course. It can play long (561 yards from the longest tees). Water owns the left side of this hole and guards a good deal of the green. If you bomb a drive, you’ll get a look at a green shot. But it won’t be easy. You’ll have to carry water and a sizable bunker that guards the front of a green. Don’t let late-round delirium convince you to go for it. Lay up and give yourself anything from a 7 to 9 iron to this medium-sized green.

Sleepy Hole Golf Course, Suffolk, No. 18, Par 4 This picturesque signature hole is considered one of the toughest holes in Hampton Roads. It plays 470 from the tips. It’s best to aim at the clubhouse in the distance from the tee. Too far right brings trees into play. Go left and there are trees and water. Distance is the key on the first shot because your approach will be to a green partially surrounded by the Nansemond River. A good drive allows for a short iron approach. Otherwise, staying on the 34-foot green is not likely. Beauty meets the beast in this tantalizing finishing hole.
