Tell us about life at Harvard?

Tell us about life at William & Mary?

Tell us about life at the University of Virginia?

It’s exciting! Lately, I’ve just been busy with classes.

The pace of life is frenetic; I am constantly running from class to interviews to choir to the library. I’ve been able to explore new subjects – economics and Arabic – while holding on to some of my earlier passions – classical music and history. Outside of the classroom, I sing in a chamber choir, the Botetourt Chamber Singers, but most exciting and unexpected for me has been writing for the college’s student newspaper, The Flat Hat. Many, many hours of preparing, interviewing, transcribing, and writing later, I am now serving as their chief staff writer.

There is always something happening at U.Va., so you can be sure that there will never be a dull moment. While it gets hectic at times, there are so many opportunities to get involved and connect with others that you really have the ability to uniquely shape your college experience.

I love being on N.C. State’s campus! There’s always super cool research and educational activities going on and the Raleigh area always offers stuff to do.

I am not declared yet, but I am planning on majoring in economics. I’m considering a double major, but I am not completely sure in which subject. What are your plans for the summer? I will be staying on campus at the College of William & Mary this summer to conduct an economics research project on a Monroe Scholars grant. My project looks at the Great Moderation, a term describing a period of decreased market volatility beginning in the 1980s, and whether economists believe it continues today after the Great Recession. I will concurrently be taking classes to hone my math skills for upper-level economics classes.

Have you decided on a major? Yes, I have recently declared a major in astronomy/ physics, and I am considering studying music as well. What are your plans for the summer? I am working with one of the professors here on some applets that demonstrate various physics concepts, so I will be continuing that through the summer. Otherwise, I plan to just relax at the beach, catch up on my reading, and hang out with friends and family.

Have you decided on a major? I’ve changed my major from engineering to environmental science with a minor in journalism. What are your plans for the summer? This summer I plan to do an internship with the UNC Coastal Studies Institute on the Outer Banks.

Are you still going to major in biomedical engineering? I am still happily unsure. I’ll have to declare in the fall, so hopefully I’ll have a better idea by then. What are your plans for the summer? I’ll be staying here for most of the summer and assisting with a research project. I’m looking forward to it.

What’s the most valuable lesson you learned after your first year of college? I’ve learned that this is more than just a learning experience in regards to my major. College is about learning who you are, what type of person you want to be and how you look at life.

What’s the most valuable lesson you learned after your first year of college? I would say the most important lesson I’ve learned is to really make the most of your time. You don’t have that much of it, so be sure to try new things, meet new people, expand your horizons – it’s a lot more rewarding than spending every spare moment on Netflix.

What’s the most valuable lesson you learned after your first year of college? I am constantly surrounded by exceptional, hardworking students and professors. Through writing articles with the Flat Hat, going to lectures, and even just having conversations with members of the William & Mary community, I’ve realized that I can’t just sector myself off in the library all of the time: much of the learning and growing I have done here so far has been because I forced myself to get out of my academic comfort zone, trying new subjects and activities that I have never had the opportunity to explore before.

Juliette Wallace has made a high school career of “bringing it home.” She’s head of her class, Honor Society president, a determined athlete and The Pilot’s top scholarship winner. Recently, she declared her acceptance to Yale University, which is about as good as it gets. So where will the potential path of success lead her? She said her intention is to return home. Her reasons are personal: Her mom lives here; she’ll miss her cat, Lolo; and her best friend is at William & Mary. Also, she believes in Portsmouth and wants to return-in-full all the good her hometown has bestowed upon her. “I absolutely love my city and our public schools,” she said. “Any success I have had is due to the hard work and belief of numerous teachers and mentors here, and I want to come back to Portsmouth and do the same for others.” Juliette said she is interested in general medicine and, potentially, research. “It’s early yet for me to know exactly what areas of medicine I will find the most compelling,” she said. “But I am starting out the process with the goal of earning a medical degree toward caring for the underserved population of Portsmouth as their family doctor.” A turbulent childhood formed the promise of scholarship in Juliette. She retreated to the world of education and it paid off. “I found solace in literature and consolation through arithmetic,” she wrote in an essay. She finishes high school as an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor and a President’s Volunteer Service Award recipient. She’s completed six dual enrollment college courses at Tidewater Community College and at the high school. Along the way, the senior held jobs as a grocery cashier and courtesy clerk, and worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor. Churchland teacher and swim coach Orenda Aiken said Juliette’s performance in class and perseverance on the swim team reveals her intelligence, time management skills and effective leadership as genuine attributes. “Juliette is silly, creative, a good listener and open-minded,” she wrote. “She is determined to better herself.” Juliette speaks passionately about her fellow students and the benefits she acquired from public education. “I don’t see myself as the most deserving of accolades because I have so much admiration for my peers who work two jobs in order to help their families, or who overcome tremendous social and financial adversities to get their high school diploma,” she said. “People ask me if Yale is my ticket out, but I see it as my ticket to bringing the best of everything I find up there, right back here to Portsmouth.”

Cindy Dixon doesn’t let anything stand in her way. “I had to figure out my next mathematical step after I completed pre-calculus, the highest math class my school offers in the 10th grade,” said Cindy, who wasn’t ready to stop taking math at that point. When she found out her choice of Advanced Placement classes were limited based on availability at her school, Cindy looked into other options for seeking knowledge. In her junior year, she enrolled simultaneously at Churchland High for AP Calculus and AP History and signed up for AP Psychology and AP Human Geography online courses in her senior year. “These are the clear indicators of the seriousness with which Cindy approaches her learning,” said Kenneth Pfeifer, a Wilson English teacher. “I honestly ended up hating the process of having to switch between two schools every day,” Cindy said about her junior year. “However, I do not regret any of it at all because taking these courses at another school was the best thing that could have happened to me academically.” Not only does she excel in the classroom, the senior also shines on the soccer field. With all four of her siblings and her parents actively involved in the sport at one time or another — whether coaching, refereeing, or playing — it seemed natural that she, too, would start by the age of 4. “I joined my high school team because my love and passion for soccer made me feel like being a part of the team was a natural act for me to take,” said Cindy, who has played on advanced and travel teams. One important lesson she has garnered from soccer is that you have to work hard no matter what, even if it gets overlooked. “For me, soccer is not about the stats or who gets talked about in the media the most,” Cindy said. It’s about teamwork and trying one’s best, she added. “It doesn’t matter if I’m competing against a skilled team or a non-skilled team, my coaches will always be able to expect the same level of play and effort from me; I never let down.” Cindy’s next step is to attend George Mason University in Northern Virginia, where she’ll study architectural engineering. “I just love creating things,” she said. “I constantly envision different creations followed by the urge to actually pursue them.” When she shares her plans to minor in political science, she gets strange looks. Her standpoint: “I want to keep my options open because I have a passion for many things and not just one.”

Several life experiences have shaped Megan Thompson into the young woman she is today. The daughter of a Navy man, Megan and her family lived in South Carolina, Guam, Virginia, Georgia and California before moving back to Virginia at the start of her junior year. “Military life has made me a much more outgoing person and more adaptive to changing situations as my environment undergoes upheaval every few years,” Megan said. When Megan’s parents signed her younger brother up for karate years ago, it sparked her interest in the martial art. This spring, she earned her black belt. “I loved how a skill could be at the same time very graceful and powerful,” said Megan, who learned discipline, endurance and the importance of hard work in achieving her goals. That determination carries over in all aspects of Megan’s life, including her passion for learning. Science — especially time spent in laboratory — became her favorite subject when she took AP Biology in the 11th grade. “More than any subject that I learned in school, science changed the way I looked at the world,” Megan said. “I understood so much more of why things happen in nature, which I never got from any other class.” Despite missing the prerequisite for Advanced Placement Chemistry, due to her cross-country move — Megan was determined to take the class in her senior year. “I told her that was not possible without first taking Honors Chemistry. She was fine with that for about a week,” teacher Anna Carter said. “She borrowed two trusted friends’ chemistry binders and a textbook and studied on her own, without me tutoring her, throughout the summer.” “Not only did she master the Honors Chemistry class (she received a 100 percent on the final exam), but she also successfully completed the summer homework for AP Chemistry, AP Calculus and AP Government,” said Denise Bartos, director of academics, college and career at Norfolk Christian High School. Through a sibling who has Asperger syndrome, she’s learned compassion and not to discount people’s strengths because of their weaknesses. She’s learned “that we must choose to love others and try our best to be compassionate towards them.” Megan added, “For evil begins when we say that one person is any better than another.” Recently, she became interested in immunization and how vaccines are developed. Megan, who will attend the College of William & Mary, aspires to a career in biomedical research. She hopes to improve the lives of people who are subjected to illnesses. “I really want to do something that will impact our world and help others.”

Ian Kenny has skimmed a lot of surfaces in his life, but probably only at the beach. As a competitive skim boarder, the Outer Banks resident participates in national and international tours. In 2014, Ian placed fourth in the Zap Amateur World Championship and third overall in the Skim USA tour, junior men’s division. Along with skim boarding, Ian is also an ambitious scholar, deeply invested in his pursuits. His stellar high school career boasts top-ranked academic, athletic and business skills, accrued with purpose. He plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to pursue studies in business management and environmental policy. “I am not interested in making money just for money’s sake,” he said. “I want to be able to use a business degree toward environmental or multinational management.” Growing up at the beach, Ian said he has come to see firsthand the need to protect it. “The beach is my home, and living here with all its natural beauty and recreational aspects has given me a true appreciation of its value and how fragile it is,” he said. “The impacts of global warming are very apparent here with Highway 12’s constant losing battle with erosion and the increasing threats of rising sea levels.” He credits classes in environmental science and human geography with helping him make the connection to his business interests. “I want to be an agent of change in the business world,” he said. “I hope to lead the way with social responsibility and environmental sustainability.” The senior describes himself as introspective and methodical. His guidance counselor, Amy White, agrees. “He knows exactly what his goal is, and then he goes after it.” White said Ian’s skill set includes playing defense with First Flight’s varsity soccer team, which was state runner-up, as well as serving as president for two years with Distributive Education Clubs of America. DECA is a high school association that prepares students for careers in finance, marketing, management and entrepreneurship. “Ian was regional DECA champion twice, and he fits it all in between college courses, internships, competitive skim boarding and volunteerism,” White said. “He is simply one-of-akind.” Seth Rose from the Carolina College Advising Corps described Ian as a “world class skim boarder who has taken way too many AP classes for a healthy person.” He worked with Ian on college applications and came away impressed with his humility. “Ian has a remarkable desire to get better.” Ian stated: “I am competitive, but mainly with improving myself. - Irene Bowers

“O

NE SATURDAY afternoon you decide to go help feed the homeless at a soup kitchen, take care of animals at the ASPCA, or simply rake your neighbor’s yard. You are the vice president of your school’s girls service club. You are active in National Honor Society, and frequently volunteer at the hospital while maintaining a part-time job working with animals at a petboarding facility in Suffolk. You swam for the school and for a year-round club team. You go out to dinner with your family once a week and love to make people laugh. As I type what is essentially my resume out to you (whoever you may be), you probably think I am a pretty involved, well-rounded teenager. The golden child of my family perhaps. But I think everything I just described to you does not reflect what it means to truly be involved in one’s community and family. When I was a sophomore, I was invited to be the one student at my school to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar. And that one experience changed my life and opinion on the meanings of volunteering, community and family. The whole weekend I was at James Madison University for the seminar, a motif kept picking at me. You shouldn’t help your community to build your resume and sound impressive, just as I exemplified in my previous paragraph. You should want to be involved because your community is your family. Your neighbors and peers and teachers and bosses are your brothers and sisters, all working together to hopefully make the world a better place through their own involvement. But there is more to it – this system cannot work unless you are willing to commit your time and be happy doing so. Once you learn to love helping that elderly lady you know clean her car, escorting that

9-year-old endoscopy patient out of the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, or simply volunteering to help a teacher grade her papers, you have discovered how I feel about community involvement. It is not a hobby; it is a lifestyle. In government, we learn about something called social capital. This term is defined as a collection of the social connections and civic commitment a person engages in, often motivating and inspiring them politically. I believe this term can apply to more than just government. It means knowing your neighbor, what’s bugging him, and how you can help – even if that means just sharing a smile and waving. It means knowing that when your sister walks downstairs grumpy something is up and you should just be her friend right then because she may have just gotten into a serious fight with her best friend. It means knowing when to forget yourself and walk in someone else’s shoes for a mile – or better yet, learning to walk with them for that mile. To build this social capital, one must get involved; it is a cyclic process that involves constant effort, less than average sleep, and an optimistic attitude. But it is worth every second of lost sleep and strenuous effort because you know you’re becoming a responsible part of your community, turning it into your extended family. So there is more to it than resume building and bragging rights. Community involvement directly leads to family unity and an amazing feeling of wholeness and accomplishment every time I think about my day before bed. Every day, we as a race have a responsibility to wake up and make every positive difference we can make within our communities. And that process starts with simply getting involved, while growing our social capital to make the world feel like a family again.”

Once you learn to love helping that elderly lady you know clean her car, escorting that 9-year-old endoscopy patient out of the PostAnesthesia Care Unit, or simply volunteering to help a teacher grade her papers, you have discovered how I feel about community involvement. It is not a hobby; it is a lifestyle.
