THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP AND RECOGNITION PROGRAM, established in 1961, is our annual salute to the best and brightest high school students from South Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore, Western Tidewater and northeastern North Carolina. Each participating high school selected a team of three to 24 students, depending on school size, who excel in academics, citizenship, school activities and community service. Each school had the opportunity to choose a senior to compete for one of The Pilot’s three scholarships: $10,000 for first place and two runner-up scholarships of $5,000 each. Student achievements, career goals and college choices were reported through early March. The judges’ criteria included transcripts, test scores, curricula, leadership, service within the school and community, and financial circumstances. Finalists were interviewed by a panel of judges. The scholarships are awarded directly to the colleges of the students’ choice. Students also competed for scholarships not funded by The Pilot: $5,000 from Taste of India, organized by the Asian Indian community in Hampton Roads, and the Dillard’s Samaritan Scholarship of $3,000, for which the company executives served as judges (see back page for more information).

Dillard’s Samaritan Scholarship Winning Essay 2018

M

Y MOTHER has taught me many things, from how to tie my shoes to how to drive a car. Amongst it all, the most important knowledge she has imparted to me is quite simple: how to serve others. As a family physician, she dedicates her life to serving others. From a young age, I knew that I wanted to spend my life doing the same. Thus, service and community involvement have become the cornerstones of my life. I spend much of my time serving my school community, where I am currently captain of the girls’ varsity tennis team and editor-in-chief of the yearbook. These positions give me the opportunity to fulfill the wishes of my peers, while ensuring we reach our united goal. For me, the term ‘family’ extends beyond the boundaries of the blood-related, as the close relationships I have developed with my team and staff are built upon familial love and service. I also participate in my school’s freshmen mentorship program. Even though I am a younger sibling, being a mentor requires me to assume an older sibling role, so that I can effectively aid these students in their first year of high school. I am humbled to be in leadership positions where I can positively impact my peers. As a natural introvert, serv-

This watercolor print I created featured the hand-lettered quote, “We rise by lifting others,” a message I consistently hope to spread and worked to fulfill in developing this project.

ing as a leader in high school has allowed me to find my own voice. I can fully empathize with those who are not yet comfortable in their own skin, as I was once in such a position. Through inclusion and compassion, I hope to inspire those around me to gain security in self-expression. Outside of school, I run an

Etsy shop where I sell my artwork. This business has allowed me to impact the national community, as I have sold over 250 pieces of art displayed across 42 states. However, with every sale I make, I care less about the monetary gain. Rather, my Etsy shop has metamorphosed into a space for me to share my passion for art and give back to the community. This past fall, the destruction left behind by Hurricane Harvey and Irma prompted me to think of how I could use my Etsy platform to support those affected. Ultimately, I decided to design and sell a print for $5 on my Etsy shop, with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross. This watercolor print I created featured the hand-lettered quote, “We rise by lifting others,” a message I consistently hope to spread and worked to fulfill in developing this project. Because of this print, I donated $200 to the American Red Cross to aid in hurricane disaster relief. While the impact of this may not be tangible to me, I hope my efforts can revive a sense of family unity in the affected communities. My Etsy shop has also enabled me to serve my local community. Having lived in Virginia Beach for most of my life, I am aware of the significance of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to both our local

and global ecosystem. When I heard that the government was cutting funding for the Chesapeake Bay, I decided to act. For my senior project, I worked in conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to transform one of my paintings inspired by the Chesapeake Bay into a print. I currently sell this product on my Etsy, and plan to donate all its proceeds to the CBF. With this money, the organization can grow over 5,000 native oysters and plant multiple native trees that will serve as a streamside buffer. This conservation of the environment is critical when thinking about future generations. Although I may not be able to witness it, I want my future family members to live in a world even better than mine. No matter how small my impact, I find purpose in directing my efforts towards a greater change. These experiences have taught me that the greatest gift we can give to each other is any service deriving from genuine passion. Regardless of proximity or influence, I have found that there will always be a way to serve others. By pursuing a career in healthcare like my mother, my hope is that I may relieve suffering while creating joy in my community. Through my passions, I will continue to actively seek and engage in service to others.

Faith is the foundation upon which Brandon Lashawn Eley structures his life. “I am first and foremost a student of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” he said. “He forms the basis of everything I do.” Accordingly, Brandon desires to build for the betterment of others. The Nansemond River High School senior will attend the University of Virginia to study architecture. “I believe the field of architecture can help problems in our educational system,” he said. “Many students are limited due to their lack of access to facilities that could teach productive skills to create careers.” A school engineering program, Project Lead the Way, was formative. “Access to engineering classes broadened my horizons and helped me understand what I’d be getting into as an architect,” he said. Along with time management skills and focus, intellectual curiosity played a large role in his academic success. “I was never satisfied with simple answers,” he said. “I probably drove my parents and teachers crazy, but I always wanted to know more.” Brandon, 18, will graduate at the top of his class with five AP credits and 12 college credits from dual enrollment at Paul D. Camp Community College. He is the state vicepresident for Beta Club, a national service and achievement organization, and a National Beta Leadership Ambassador. A recipient of the University of Virginia Book Award, he also serves on the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council and the Student Ministry Leadership Team. Although he participated in several seasons of track, much of his time has been devoted to Nansemond River’s High Step Marching Band. Throughout high school, Brandon served as drum major, sharing the “enormous responsibility” for a few years, but shouldering it alone his senior year. To maintain requisite energy levels, he works out with his dad, a certified fitness instructor. “It pays off,” he said, explaining that he high steps on field while conducting the 88 musicians and performance elements. “It involves a lot of energy and discipline.” A saxophonist, Brandon enjoys all music, “because it is the universal language,” but is partial to gospel, rhythm-and-blues, hip-hop, and John Philip Sousa’s marching music. The oldest of two children, he credits his parents, Shawn Eley and Tomika Doleman, with providing encouragement and expectations of working to his highest potential. “My faithfulness allows me the opportunities that have come,” he said, noting it requires honest reflection. “I’ve had to learn it isn’t about me; I have to put others before myself.” Nansemond River Spanish teacher Kristen Ellis has witnessed that in action. “Brandon is one-of-a-kind, someone who does not use his talents to separate himself from others but to connect with them,” she said. “He constantly makes genuine efforts to speak with students, offer help or just be friendly. Wherever he goes, Brandon will do amazing things.” While that looks to be architecture studies at the University of Virginia in the fall, this high-stepping senior already has a blueprint for life. “I want to work at what God puts before me with all my heart.”

Three times a week Dan Bannon gets up at the crack of dawn and swims for more than an hour at the Princess Anne YMCA before classes at Cox High School begin at 7:20 a.m. Then he goes back after school and swims again. Sometimes he asks himself, “why?” First of all, “I just like to be in the water,” he said. Secondly, the sport has taught him discipline, dedication, resilience, respect, and much more. Dan has been a swimmer since age 4 and excels in and out of the water. He served as captain of his varsity swim team, was named Most Valuable Player the past two seasons and this year placed fifth in the state for the 100-meter freestyle. His abilities on the year-round competitive Tide Swimming team earned him the title of USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. On top of all that, Dan ranked first in his class academically. Juggling classwork and swimming has also taught him time management, he said. “I learned that balance, and made it work for me.” But he won’t take all the credit. “I had teachers and coaches who believed in me along the way.” He also had a family who supported him. Sabrina Shumate, his advanced placement biology teacher, praised Dan’s intelligence and “can-do spirit.” Dan is a role model for others, she said. “He has a positive outlook on life, which is contagious to those around him.” He aced 17 advanced placement courses and was named a national AP Scholar. The hard work paid off. Dan is heading to the University of Notre Dame in Indiana this fall in keeping with “the tradition,” he said. He will be the fourth generation on his father’s side to attend the prestigious college. And both his parents, Theresa and retired Air Force Lt. Col. Matt Bannon, are graduates. Dan was accepted into the Mendoza School of Business and plans to major in finance. And that’s not all: he was named a Malpass Scholar. The award is given yearly to one incoming freshman intending to major in finance. In addition to a monetary scholarship, he will have the opportunity to spend about eight hours per week in the office of the University’s chief investments officer, Scott Malpass. “It’s exciting to think I’ll have the chance to work with a great group of mentors,” he said. There is also the likelihood of summer internships and study abroad. Dan said he also plans to find time to give back to the community through organizations such as Notre Dame Christian Athletes and the Notre Dame Center for Social Concerns. And he’ll keep the swimming goggles. He has “gladly accepted” a spot on the Notre Dame men’s swim team. His future plans include earning a master’s degree in business administration and one day working in private equity for a large investment bank. “Sound financial practices in the private sector are essential to life in our society,” he said. “If business is good, then quality of life goes up for everybody.” His dream is to become a chief financial officer – by the age of 30. The 18-year-old summarized his mission in life as “to do good for the world.”

At age 7, he was in Portsmouth Public Library checking out history books. “Big, old, musty, WWII books,” said Walker Lane Robey, now 18. “Even if I couldn’t read the words, I’d look at the pictures.” The early interest has only increased. This Woodrow Wilson High School senior aims to impact future history by working for the United States Foreign Service. Academic excellence and diplomacy are his hallmark, according to his guidance counselor, Lauren Collins. She describes him as diligent, perceptive and possessing depth of character. “It sets him apart from his peers,” she said. “Walker has a calm demeanor, but he’s great with people and has a wonderful sense of humor.” She expects him “to succeed at whatever he sets his mind to.” Walker’s mindset for the immediate future is to capitalize on his acceptance into Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service program. He hopes to parlay that into a career in the State Department, which promotes peace, protects Americans abroad and advances U.S. interests globally. “I believe you have to step up to become part of the solution to modern day problems,” he said. “To be a foreign service officer would bring the past and present together, and provide real opportunities to make the world a better place.” Walker graduates at the top of his class, with two Advanced Placement credits and 24 dual enrollment credits from Tidewater Community College. His last semester of high school consisted entirely of collegiate courses, demonstrating “he is fully capable of college-level rigor,” Collins said. “Few students nowadays have such modesty and humility,” wrote his AP English teacher, Kenneth Pfeifer, noting Walker’s work ethic and consistency of performance and attention. “In my 45 years of teaching, I have seldom encountered his equal.” Walker described his family as “tight-knit and kinda unusual.” His grandmother lives in the upstairs apartment, and pets include their dog, Turbo, and a cat named Kitty. He credits his sister, Maegan, parents, Joey Robey and Natalie Luch, and grandmother, Ruth Gilmore, as instrumental in his success. “They’ve each had a role in forming me into the person I am today.” Walker volunteers with Oasis Ministries’ soup kitchen, participates in Model United Nations and is a member of the Police Explorers Program and National Honor Society. He is also an avid gamer “because it’s a great way to stay in touch with friends here and who’ve moved away.” He and his dad are huge Steelers fans, too. Walker professes deep affection for Portsmouth, but thinks it is time he tries the world on for size. “My mom keeps us on the straight and narrow, so she’s excited for me but dreading it, too,” he said, adding that she and his grandmother are former caterers, whose cooking skills are “awesome.” Figuring out which of their special dishes he will most miss provided this thoughtful scholar with a moment’s indecision. “Off the top of my head, quesadillas and cheesecake,” he said, laughing. “What’s easier to predict is that I’ll always be glad to come home.”

Mila Colizza wants to make a difference in the world, and there’s no doubt she will. The 18-year-old is a Global Affairs Fellow at Norfolk Academy. For the past four years, she has been part of the multidisciplinary, academic Batten Civic and Global Leadership program focused on issues facing the global community. “I wanted to be more aware about the world around me,” she said. “I wanted to challenge myself.” The Chesapeake resident with a 4.0 grade-point average said she has learned a lot about leadership and self-motivation. The opportunity to travel to different parts of the world has allowed her to view people and their cultures through different lenses. From meeting with a retired CIA agent and touring the Pentagon in Washington, to trips to Russia and Peru, Mila said she will never forget the first-hand learning experiences. “Being in Russia in general was extremely exciting,” she said. She toured a political history museum in St. Petersburg and mentally compared “our translator’s commentary with the modern rise in pro-Putin sentiment,” she said. Her most memorable time in Peru last summer was in the rural community of Patacancha. The trip was organized by Awamaki, an organization that globally markets textile products made by women in the village. She and others had the chance to try their ancient weaving techniques, including spinning, dying raw wool or alpaca fibers, and using a loom system to create a pattern by threading individual strings. Mila’s first visit to Honduras was at about the age of 10, and for the past four years she has gone on medical mission trips there with her mother, who is a plastic surgeon in Ohio. They have a close connection to the impoverished nation, as Mila’s older sister was adopted from the country. Each time, more than 100 children are provided medical care at the clinic. Mila helps organize supplies, entertain the young patients and sometimes observed surgical procedures. “The people I have met are all truly wonderful and hardworking,” she said. “These trips put me in situations which are inherently unfamiliar to me.” The experience has made her more self-aware and more conscientious, she said. Norfolk Academy American literature teacher Katherine Hobbs described Mila as “extraordinarily creative, intuitive, and open.” She is not only smart and talented, but “humble in her journey to discovering her own voice,” Hobbs said. Mila is heading to Connecticut to become a student at Yale University. She said she screamed and cried upon learning of the acceptance to her mother’s alma mater. The school focuses on the personable approach, she said. They don’t just consider students as good, she said. The question is “What kind of good are you, and how will you contribute to the community?” Mila isn’t sure what the future will bring. Both her parents, Mark Colizza and Dr. Ann Schwentker, work in the medical field. She plans to focus on science, technology, engineering or math. But, “Honestly, I’m open to taking different paths in my life,” she said. “I always want to be learning.” – Cindy Butler Focke
