THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP AND RECOGNITION PROGRAM, established in 1961, is our annual salute to the best and brightest high school students from South Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore, Western Tidewater and northeastern North Carolina. Each participating high school selected a team of three to 24 students, depending on school size, who excel in academics, citizenship, school activities and community service. Each school had the opportunity to choose a senior to compete for one of The Pilot’s three scholarships: $10,000 for first place and two runner-up scholarships of $5,000 each. Student achievements, career goals and college choices were reported through early March. The judges’ criteria included transcripts, test scores, curricula, leadership, service within the school and community, and financial circumstances. Finalists were interviewed by a panel of judges. The scholarships are awarded directly to the colleges of the students’ choice. Students also competed for scholarships not funded by The Pilot: $5,000 from Taste of India, organized by the Asian Indian community in Hampton Roads, and the Dillard’s Samaritan Scholarship of $3,000, for which company executives served as judges (see back page for more information).

Tell us about life at Yale. Yale is, well, Yale. Everything’s overwhelming and the buildings are all Gothic. It’s so opulent and awe-inspiring, and I’m pretty sure I’m living in a dream. We have about three dozen libraries spread around campus. You walk through manicured English gardens to get to class. My dorm neighbors an art gallery and a sculpture garden. I sleep beneath a 216-foot bell tower.

Tell us about your college experience so far at VCU. My college experience so far has been amazing! The social aspect of it has been very welcoming. Everybody is very friendly and helpful. The academic aspect of college has also been great! I have learned so much in this short amount of time. The professors are respectful and knowledgeable. They really seem to care a lot about their students. I know for sure that I have made the best decision to attend college at VCU. I love it here!

Tell us about your college experience so far at William & Mary. Life at William & Mary is both a struggle and a blessing every day. I am surrounded by very motivated and high-achieving students who challenge me and encourage me to strive for excellence. I love the community that William & Mary students share and how willing everyone is to help and take care of each other. I was able to start conducting research in the animal behavior and ecology lab that we have on campus, and through that I have received much advice and wisdom from the officiating professors. I am incredibly grateful to be able to attend such a prestigious university, and I can’t imagine a better environment in which to grow and learn.

Have you decided on a major? I’m currently intending to major in environmental studies, and I have a particular interest in the ways our natural and built environments shape human development. General medicine isn’t totally out of the equation yet, but I found the pre-med requirements to be incredibly limiting and unfulfilling. I want to make the most out of the resources available here at Yale. What are your plans for the summer? I’ll be doing two of my favorite things – playing with kids and running around under the sun. I’m nannying for a local family full-time during the week and volunteering for some environmental causes near and dear to my heart on the weekends. In my spare time, you’ll find me eating Popsicles on Sandbridge Beach. What’s the most valuable lesson you learned after your first year of college? The importance of balance and bursting the collegiate bubble. It’s easy to get caught up in your studies and lost within your own head, especially at a place like Yale. I found that volunteering here in New Haven and coming back down to Virginia on breaks really helped me to stay grounded. Getting a not-so-hot grade on an exam is not the end of the world, and it took me actually being in the real world to realize that.

Have you decided on a major? I am majoring in political science, but I plan on double majoring for sure. I just haven’t decided on a second area of study. I still have quite some time to decide on a career, but I’m leaning toward becoming a lawyer. What are your plans for the summer? I plan on getting a job and relaxing. Hopefully, I get to spend many days at the beach or at the park marking off all the books on my summer reading list. I also plan on doing a lot of journaling. There are two specific things I really want to do this summer: learn Krav Maga and participate in the Insane Inflatable 5K. Whether or not I actually get to do the things I have planned, I will make the best of what opportunities do arise. What’s the most valuable lesson you learned after your first year of college? The most valuable lesson that I have learned is to be completely independent. Before I attended VCU, I was really dependent on my parents. I was beyond scared to leave home and to be away from them. This experience has really pushed me to be an adult. Now that I’ve gotten over most of my anxieties about college and leaving home, I have gotten very comfortable here. A part of me actually wanted to stay here for the summer, but I really want to be surrounded by my family and friends back at home. I have definitely grown a lot.

$5,000 scholarship winner

Have you decided on a major? I am majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry. What are your plans for the summer? This summer, I will spend most of the time at home in Norfolk. I’m taking a summer course online and am hoping to volunteer at the aviary attached to the Virginia Beach Aquarium. I also plan to return to where I worked my senior year of high school and spend most of my free time reading at the beach.

Graduated from First Flight High School, Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; attends the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Tell us about your college experience so far at UNC. In a word, unbelievable. It’s a great place to be and April 3, it was the place to be. I couldn’t be any happier with where I am. Editor’s note: On April 3, the UNC men’s basketball team won the national championship. Have you decided on a major? I am currently majoring in prebusiness administration and am minoring in entrepreneurship. What are your plans for the summer? I plan to do a sales internship in Atlanta with Aptive Environmental. What’s the most valuable lesson you learned after your first year of college? If you aren’t a morning person, taking 8 a.m. classes Monday to Thursday will not make you one.

What’s the most valuable lesson you learned after your first year of college? In my first year of college, I’ve learned to be assertive about things that I want and to let go of things that I don’t. Holding on to activities that you don’t really enjoy isn’t worth the time or energy. Likewise, going after opportunities you want in life even if you’re afraid, because you’re afraid, can be the most rewarding experiences.

Kevin Hong has big plans for the world. “I want to reform the math education system,” he said. If his academic performance is an indicator of future success, he’s well on his way. The Princess Anne High School International Baccalaureate senior achieved an almost perfect score on the SAT. He’ll graduate with one of the highest grade-point averages in his school’s recorded history, wrote a Princess Anne counselor in a recommendation letter. “Math is just something I really enjoy,” the 17-year-old said. But the way math is taught should be changed, he said. There’s too much memorization. Students need to understand and apply the concepts behind the problems. “That’s the beauty of math,” Kevin said. His love for the subject goes beyond the classroom. He works as a tutor at a local Mathnasium, a math-only learning center. He’s volunteered many hours to help his peers and students on a Mathcounts team at his former middle school. One person he helped was particularly meaningful. He volunteered to tutor a home-schooled student with dyslexia. “Seeing people kind of connect the dots is a rewarding experience,” Kevin said. In addition to tutoring, his accolades are numerous: National Merit scholarship winner, National AP Scholar and AP Scholar with Distinction. He captained his school’s Science Bowl team, which placed third at the state level this year. Other achievements include being a U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad semifinalist and American Invitational Mathematics exam qualifier. He also participated in the Virginia High School League Scholastic Bowl. During his junior year, he studied nanotechnology in a once-a-week internship at Norfolk State University. Last summer he was selected to attend the Hampshire College Summer Studies in Math program. The opportunity to be exposed to college- and graduate-level math was extremely valuable, as was the chance to meet students from around the world, he said. His parents were born in China during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Education was difficult because of widespread political violence, Kevin said. But they came to America and both achieved college diplomas and doctoral degrees. “Their experiences have impressed upon me the importance of education,” Kevin said. Math isn’t his only interest. For the past 12 years, he’s played piano. First place in the American Protege International Piano and Strings competition earned him the opportunity to play in a winners’ concert at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall. Additionally, he’s won first in district and third in state at the Virginia Music Teachers Association competition. Then there’s badminton. “When I feel a little bit overwhelmed, badminton is my time to relax a little,” he said. “And keep in shape.” Kevin will attend Yale in the fall and plans to pursue a field related to math and statistics. One day he may consider living in Silicon Valley or near Wall Street, he said. “I want to be part of the next wave of emerging technology.”

Strategy, perseverance and rigorously applied ability have added up to admission at Princeton University for Rohan Joshi. His polished resume is the culmination of effort over time. His road to the Ivy League began in second grade when he was selected to attend Old Donation Center, the school for gifted students. Rohan’s parents emigrated from India as educated professionals, looking for a better future. Their expectations were high. “My mother would tell me I may not be the smartest kid so I should always work hard,” he said. It paid off. Rohan finishes Ocean Lakes, the city’s mathematics and sciences academy, with 15 Advanced Placement classes and numerous magnet courses. He’s at the top of the class with a grade-point average approaching 5.0. As a well-rounded student, he also captained the tennis and debate teams. In the community, Rohan has volunteered at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital and the public library, and served as a Camp Invention STEM counselor. Rohan said an early speech impediment taught him the value of perseverance. “I stuttered, and I couldn’t pronounce the letter ‘r,’” he said. The issue didn’t warrant school therapy services, but he was anxious to overcome it. “I would read aloud for hours to my aaji, or grandmother, from India when she visited us,” he said. “Eventually, my speech improved.” Mastering problems through perseverance carried into high school, where he discovered that Ocean Lakes did not have a Model United Nations club. He decided to recruit members and a club sponsor, when most teachers were involved elsewhere. “Mr. Ian Tobey came through; we had our first meeting in ninth grade, and now we’re sending delegations to conferences.” As part of academy program requirements, Rohan shadowed doctors here and in the United Kingdom. In addition, he participated in research at Texas Tech University, which helped him select his future field of study. “Initially, I wanted to study operations research at Princeton because I was interested in quantitative finance,” he said. “But the biomedical program in chemical engineering at Texas was fascinating – researching better drug delivery methods to modify vaccines in order to target individual cells or organs – and I became convinced of its value.” He plans to study chemical engineering as an undergraduate because “it more broadly prepares me to move across disciplines, and I’m interested in solving problems that help people.” While acknowledging his stellar school performance, Principal Claire LeBlanc lauded Rohan’s devotion to duty, which she said “was exemplified in small actions: in learning his lessons, respecting his parents and teachers, helping his fellow students.” What’s his advice to other students seeking a successful route in school? “Study smart, develop relationships with your teachers, counselors and peers, and do the work,” he said.

$5,000 Taste of India scholarship winner Frances Moore, the oldest of two children in a military family, lived in several places during her early childhood. Germany, Texas and Japan were some of the family’s homes before they settled in Norfolk while she was in elementary school. “I learned to adapt and make friends,” she said. “I was always the new girl at the park who would go over to the other kids and say, ‘Hi, I’m Frances.’ ” Personable and passionate about impacting the world, Frances, 18, is gregarious yet grounded. She caps her high school years with a 4.83 gradepoint average that includes 12 Advanced Placement courses. As an athlete, she’s participated in varsity swim and as the varsity lacrosse goalie throughout high school, serving as co-captain on both teams her senior year. Her community service involves two years as a Norfolk Summer Leadership Camp counselor. In addition, Frances has played violin with Norfolk’s Strolling Silver Strings, a selective, five-school ensemble that performs a yearly average of 60 gigs in the area. “The seniors slow the music at the end of every show, so we catch each other’s eye and start almost counting heartbeats,” she said. “I will miss that remarkable sense of connection.” Maury’s orchestra director, Ryan Featherer, said Frances is a rare combination of leadership and warm personality. Following her performance in a district orchestra assessment, Featherer said, “I’ve never seen a student take the lead like she did in my 20 years of teaching.” School counselor Joelle Jeffreys describes her as having clear vision, ambition, drive and a passion to help others. “She is one of the most phenomenal students I have ever encountered.” Frances will attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh as a Science and Humanities Scholar and plans to major in chemistry and English. She hopes to be a pharmaceutical researcher, “applying it to cures for illnesses and disease-related research.” Her rare moments of relaxation are spent reading or swimming. “The swimming mellows my mood,” she said, noting this applies to practice, not meets. “I don’t matter in the regionals because I’m never a final seed, but in my last swim meet, I decided to go for a personal best,” she said. “I got it and won, which felt great.” Describing herself as logical and organized, Frances believes her abilities do not separate so much as put her in a different lane. “When the meet is over, we’re all still in the same pool.” She’s grateful to her family and Norfolk public school teachers, and is looking forward to new challenges at college. Chances are almost certain that on her first day, she’ll stroll across the campus green, stick out her hand to another student, and say, “Hi, I’m Frances.” – Irene Bowers

$5,000 scholarship winner

Michael Schulte’s passion for medicine and music developed from early life experiences. The Bayside High School and Health Sciences Academy senior was born more than three months premature in Minnesota. He spent the first six months of his life in a neonatal intensive care unit. An underdeveloped esophagus and various complications caused the hospitalization. For more than a year, he was fed through a feeding tube. He experienced numerous surgeries, followed by food therapy to learn how to eat. “As a result, I’ll eat anything now,” he said jokingly. Michael said his love for music began in the womb, as his parents listened to all types of tunes, including alternative. The self-taught musician said he tends to be drawn to indie and jazz. He plays piano, ukulele, drums and his favorite, the guitar. Then there’s his fascination for art, most likely due to numerous museum visits with his parents, he said. One of his favorite pieces is the 1943 oil painting “Nightlife,” by artist Archibald John Motley Jr., which hangs in the Chicago Art Institute. It depicts African Americans wearing vibrant colors and dancing in a jazz club. Even through their struggles, they exude happiness, Michael said. His family moved to Hampton Roads in time for Michael to begin eighth grade. His medical history influenced the desire to attend the Health Sciences Academy, he said. “It started out with the idea of giving back; all these doctors did these wonderful things.” They made his quality of life much better than it could have been, he said. Thinking about others facing medical issues has also been a big motivator. Michael’s high school experience has paved his way for a future in medicine. Specialized courses he’s taken include comparative anatomy and physiology, medicinal chemistry, pathology and more. He’s ranked in the top five in a class of nearly 400 students, and is a member of the National and Medical honor societies. He plans to attend the University of Virginia, double major in music and physics, and later become a pediatric anesthesiologist. That decision was made by process of elimination. At first he thought about becoming a cardiac surgeon or neurosurgeon but was uncomfortable with the idea of performing surgery. Then, Michael attended a panel discussion on pediatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School and was inspired by the physicians there. The 18-year-old is grateful to his team of doctors, as his medical struggles are now minimal. He wants to assist people through music, medicine or both. One day he hopes to start a charity to benefit those with birth defects. “I want to meet people, get to know them, hear their side of the story and really, really help them,” he said. – Cindy Butler Focke

| PRINCESS ANNE HIGH

Dillard’s Samaritan Scholarship Winning Essay 2017

“E

ARLY ON my parents instilled the expectation to be a functional part of the community I grew up in. Whether at school, church, or in the neighborhood, it has always been more about being engaged than simply being a bystander. It is with these principles and the support of my family that has served as the foundation for my call to serve others. In my school community, I presently serve as the SCA president at Princess Anne High School. The SCA plays a large role in overseeing the majority of school wide events including: Homecoming, Leadership Workshop, Spirit Weeks, Appreciation Weeks, as well as a much broader commitment to our community. Most recently we oversaw the 13th annual Love Run, which helped to raise over $7,000 for the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters. I also serve as a representative for my school at City-Wide SCA, the Princess Anne School Planning Council, and the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board. It has been a privilege to be given the opportunity to be a voice on issues of policy and change. My involvement at church became more than just going to weekly mass when I became an altar server in the third grade. Shortly after, I became involved in our youth group, traveling during the summers to the Eastern Appalachian region of Kentucky where we would serve the impoverished community of David. Taught to live the gospel, “feed the hungry and clothe the poor”, we served the community by means of holding a vacation bible school, feeding local children breakfast and lunch, as well as refurbishing homes and a local playground. For my 10th grade personal project, I created ARK,

standing for Acts of Random Kindness. These random acts include: Caddying for the Special Olympics Golf Tournament, procuring toiletries and food and donating them to the homeless of Virginia Beach in honor of a local homeless man. I also continue to be involved at Plaza Middle School, where I attended middle school. There, I was made aware of a single father raising five children who was in need of a washer and dryer. Through fundraising projects and the help of hhgregg we were able to have a washer and dryer anonymously delivered to this family. For the past three years I have hosted a pajama party where friends and family come together to donate new pajamas to local kids in need in time for the holidays. These donations have come from as far away as California and New York. With each year the pajama party’s popularity has increased, collecting 50 pairs the first year and over 200 this year, with next year’s collection already underway. While I never had the chance to meet the family who needed the washer and dryer, or have seen the faces of the kids who receive the pajamas I collect, my hope is that it somehow makes life just a little more hopeful for them and their families. I remember as a young child, watching my parents volunteer and wondering why we as a family were always the first to arrive and the last to leave. Yet, as I have grown older and furthered my own involvement in community outreach, I have found meaning to this. Now, I do not question the times I am the first to arrive and the last to leave, but rather acknowledge there is a deeper purpose to this, and that love is best shown through action rather than words.”

While I never had the chance to meet the family who needed the washer and dryer, or have seen the faces of the kids who receive the pajamas I collect, my hope is that it somehow makes life just a little more hopeful for them and their families.
