FINANCIAL AID THERE IF YOU NEED IT By Cindy Butler Focke

good private education isn’t A cheap, but you don’t have to be rich to send your children to one

of Tidewater’s many great private schools. Linda Swindell can attest to that. She was a single mom back when her daughter Alexis, now 23, was in school. Swindell wanted her child to receive an education with a “moral and spiritual compass and a good foundation,” so she applied for – and received – financial aid at Greenbrier Christian Academy. About 30 percent of private school students take part in programs that defray the cost of tuition. Experts say taking advantage of what is available requires diligence and a willingness to look for help. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average

yearly cost for a private education is $7,700 for elementary school and $13,030 for high school. Depending on where you live those numbers can balloon to $40,000 in urban areas on the East and West Coasts and more than $45,000 at boarding schools. But most schools will work with you. For example, tuition at Norfolk Academy ranges from $18,500 to $23,400. Financial aid makes up 10 percent of the school’s yearly operating budget, accounting for about 20 percent of the student body. Jay Lasley, admissions director, says the school helps families take a “financial snapshot” to see how tuition costs can best fit into their budget. He says the school’s retention rate of about 97 percent shows its costs stay well within reach of most if its families. Linda Swindell, now married, has another daughter attending Green-

brier. But thanks to the added income from her husband, Bill, and a series of cost-saving measures (driving older cars, limiting nights

out, etc), they have been able to afford the school without more financial aid. Other families still need help. A variety of factors go into financial aid awards, including family size. Last year 46 students with household incomes of $50,000 or less received about $17,700 in aid at Norfolk Academy; 81 in the $50,000-100,000 range were awarded an average of $13,500; and more than 100 students with households incomes more than $100,000 received somewhere in the area of $6,000 in assistance. Esther Diskin, Norfolk Academy communications director, says families should never assume they cannot afford the school. “Take a look at our school, and go through the process,” she says. “There is no cookie-cutter template; we take an individualized approach.” Interestingly, there are few resources outside of the schools themselves for financial aid. Unlike college financial aid, there are no central websites for scholarship applications. There are, however, a number of internal scholarship or financial aid programs which families can access with the help of the school officials. The biggest one is probably the Virginia Education Improvement

Scholarships Tax Credits program, funded by taxpayer donations and approved by the Virginia Department of Education. People or businesses donate to the fund and receive an income tax credit from the government for the donation, similar to claiming a charitable contribution. The school gets scholarship funds, which in many cases adds to the scholarships already in place. There are more than 30 approved foundations in the program within Virginia, like the Association of Christian Schools International Children’s Tuition Fund. Coordinator Mame McMillon said last year 338 students within 18 schools received about $806,000 in financial aid. And the McMahon Parater Scholarship Foundation, run by the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, provided more than $5.5 million in 2016-17, helping support 29 schools, including 13 locally. St. Gregory the Great Catholic School has benefited from McMahon Parater. Development director Bernadette Keplinger said the foundation is one of the school’s “silos of tuition assistance.” Last year, “It enabled us to take 76 students who normally would not have been able to

afford private education,” she says. Some private organizations offer scholarships for private school education, but are very specialized, such as the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program for 7th-graders, A Better Chance and the Black Student Fund. Then, there’s the Coverdell Education savings account named for the late U.S. Sen. Paul Coverdell. A parent can put money in the account, and it will grow tax-deferred. Proceeds may be withdrawn taxfree for qualified education expenses not just for college, but for tuition, books, and even computers for children enrolled in any private primary or secondary school. The annual contribution limit is $2,000 and there are restrictions of adjusted gross income for two parents of less than $190,000 yearly income; payment plans, discounts for tuition payment in full, a multi-children discount, alumni discounts, and tuition loan programs are other options. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A PRIVATE SCHOOL WHY ENROLL A CHILD IN AN INDEPENDENT PRIVATE SCHOOL? The reasons cited repeatedly by the thousands of families that send

their children to private schools include individual attention, smaller classes, teacher excellence and high academic standards.

STEP 1: WEIGH THE BENEFITS

STEP 2: MAKE A LIST OF POTENTIAL SCHOOLS

A STUDY conducted by the U.S. Department of Education confirmed that larger percentages of students in independent schools are enrolled in advanced courses than in public schools. The study also found that students at independent private schools:

YOU’VE DECIDED THAT PRIVATE EDUCATION is right for your child. Now you have to pick a school, and the options are many. Here are some questions to consider as you make your decision and a list of materials to request from each school on your list.

Do twice as much homework as their counterparts.

These questions can help you decide which school is right for your child:

Watch two-thirds as much television. Are more likely to participate in varsity or intramural sports. Are more likely to agree that students and teachers get along well, that discipline is fair and that teaching is good.

The kinds of schools Although schools that are members of the National Association of Independent Schools set high standards and emphasize values, they are distinct from one another. There are day and boarding schools, coeducational schools, girls’ schools and boys’ schools. Enrollment varies from a few dozen to a few thousand students. Some independent schools are centuries old; others have been around only a decade. Some are progressive; others are more traditional in structure. Many schools excel at rigorous intellectual preparation; others are dedicated to average learners. Some specialize in teaching bright students with learning disabilities. – National Association of Independent Schools

STEP 3: SCHEDULE VISITS AND ASK QUESTIONS

Questions to consider

Would your child enjoy a small or large school? Would your child flourish at a traditional or progressive school? Should the school be coeducational or single-sex? Should it be a day school or a boarding school? What special programs – such as arts, sports or computers – are important to your child? Is a diverse school community important to you and your family? Does your child have special needs or interests?

School materials to request After determining your priorities, order and review catalogs from a number of schools. Here are some questions to start with as you look through each school’s materials:

What is the school’s mission, and does its philosophy appeal to you?

IT’S A GOOD IDEA to apply to several schools so you and your child have options about which one to attend. After you visit several schools, create a short list of those you wish to pursue. Complete the application forms for those schools, and that will trigger the rest of the admission process.

Application requirements

How, and how often, does the school communicate with families?

Most schools require a complete application on file before they decide who to admit.

Can parents call or e-mail teachers when they need to?

The following items are typically part of the process:

Do the students seem productive, engaged and happy?

A completed application form.

How does the school measure individual achievement – through grades, portfolio review or something else?

Faculty background What are the backgrounds and experiences of the faculty? What’s the student-teacher ratio in your child’s grade? Is the faculty diverse enough to provide a variety of role models?

General questions

The most recent academic transcript with grades. Past standardized testing results. Teacher recommendations. Results of a standardized admission test, a school-administered entrance exam or both.

Other requirements Depending on the applicant’s age, some independent schools might ask for other materials, such as: Parent statements. Student writing samples.

Are academics rigorous?

Is the campus clean, well-lighted and secure?

Artwork portfolios.

Is the environment competitive? Nurturing? Are there high expectations?

Does the school feel like a community?

Specialized testing, such as results of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children.

Does the school meet your child’s needs?

What is the school’s attrition rate?
