how architecture talks about the past and present of kyoto? the assigned sites have obvious characteristic of past and present wihch we used as the main design concept and represented through architecture facade and construction materials.

past plan - site a
section past building has traditional wooden structure that appears from the first glance. the main purpose of this building is leisure which allows tourists to enjoy the true japanese sense
past
12
present plan - site b
simply as present, the building structure exhibits kyoto story along gradual concrete slope which leads tourists from the first floor to the third floor. aluminium facade allows natural light to penetrate and reduce energy usage.

how architecture becomes exhibition itself “we came up with the question of how architecture represent japanese and thai traditional fabric patterns, we then came up with the idea of letting light penetrate through pattern perforated facade and cast the patterns on the floor” asanoha 麻の葉

1st floor plan
We designed the “architecture” as an “exhibition” it self and so the space quality inside the architecture acts as interactive facade which people can learn about thai and japanese patterns through their senses - seeing and touching. The exterior facade carved with Asanoha and Prajamyam patterns is reflected to the interior space due to the sun angle.

bookaholic shophouse “how natural lighting reduce energy consumption in shophouse ? (where light can’t penetrate well)”
shophouse in thailand has big problem of light penetration. both side walls are big solid pane with no window, natural light only come from front facade. accordingly, energy consumption in shophouse is high. we used flipping fin facade and light tube in order to allow indirect light to light up center, front and back of the shophouse. this reduces bulb usage as well as enhance comfort zone of all users.
cross section
flipping fin facade
light tube
wood helps screen out light while glass allow indirect light to light up the room
lighttube oenetrates through center of shophouse to light up the center court which, normally, light doesn’t reach.
